Where to Eat Along Virginia’s Scenic Skyline Drive | Eater DC

"Rich with historical charm and anchored by a visitor center, this lodge is a convenient stop to explore and grab a quick bite, with kids’ menus for every meal, even a menu for dogs, and yes—the blackberry ice cream pie shows up here too." - Stephanie Ganz

Absolutely fantastic. I’m not sure how anyone cannot love this food and this place. The mushroom ravioli and the pasta carbonara are both incredible. Love sitting in an historic room with a wonderful fire. Ashley, our wait staff, was delightful. A gem of a place in our National Park.

We ate here three times. The location is wonderful if you're staying in Shenandoah National Park. Our first night there, my daughter and I split mushroom ravioli, which came with five ravioli drowned in cream sauce, thankfully with lots of fresh mushrooms. The flavor was pretty good, but for the price I would not order it again. Five small, mediocre hush puppies for $10 were a waste of money. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, but the cost for so-so food was a let down. For breakfast the next morning, the hostess was MIA so a random person from the lodge's staff seated us. It took over ten minutes to get waited on and another 25 minutes for coffee and water to be delivered to the table. The coffee was full of grounds (as was the refill!) and only half full. I had to go ask someone for cream and sugar and then go ask for butter and syrup for pancakes and French toast. Both dishes came out too cold to melt butter. I would not order French toast here again, as the bread was from a cheap loaf from the grocery store. The fruit on top was good with the exception of the overripe, mushy blueberries. Our waitress took no responsibility for anything, blaming the kitchen, though they obviously had nothing to do with the serving of water, coffee, cream, sugar, and syrup. She said she didn't know why our food was cold because she brought it out right away. The pancakes we ordered the day before were on the table within five minutes and were hot. I'm just saying. To solidify the poor score, a boy at the table next to us knocked a glass off the table and we were shocked to see his dad come back with a broom and dust pan and sweep it up himself. I don't even know what to say about that. So, while I do recommend Big Meadows Lodge as a wonderful place to stay, for dining I recommend Pollock Dining Room at Skyland Resort, which had exceptional service, large portions, and phenomenal food for about the same price.

Beautiful views from a rustic dining hall. Any and all may eat here, not only those renting rooms. The menu is a little limited, but the food is good. Come enjoy the area, gift shop, hiking trails, and striking views.

We sat by the window and the view of mountain ranges was stunning. Since we had dinner around 5pm, we got to watch the sky slowly shifting from a clear blue to reddish gold, couldn’t ask for a better backdrop 🌟Every dish we tried was great! The price was a bit expensive but the food was served in generous portions. We were initially worried about the freshness of the ingredients, given the remote location, but that concern quickly disappeared • The broccoli 🥦 was cooked just right, retaining the firmness in bites • The sweet potato mash and the sauce paired perfectly with the pork chops, cutting through the richness for a balanced dish • I liked the blackberry hot honey on the waffles. While the herb flavor in the waffle wasn’t my favorite (I’m not a big herb fan), it was still an interesting twist. The chicken was crispy • The flatbread made for an excellent appetizer, give it a try!

Google
You would not expect good food in this kind of exclusive location but the food is truly well done. Amazing and large portions for after a hike! Try the Virginia peanut soup, it’s strange and interesting. Very dog friendly! They have a dog menu! Service was not necessarily poor, they are just severely understaffed. Not a good place to be if you’re in a rush (though its unlikely you are, when enjoying this area).

Google
The food and service were good! I recommend getting here early for breakfast because they were pretty busy at around 9am. While you're waiting they give you a buzzer that goes off once your table is ready

Google
Ambiance was great. Views are awesome. Service was amazing. Abby was both awesome and gorgeous. Now, the food is expensive... yet excellent and exceptional. We had trout and pork chop. I first feared servings would be too small. Pork chop was huge, and I had two trout fillets. Both were expertly cooked and well seasoned. From the first bite, it was a pleasure to eat. They were served on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes. Now, what the heck did they do to these potatoes? I don't know. They were, simply, the best sweet potatoes I've EVER had. The only normal part of the meal were the accompanying veggies - I wish they had been sautéed in spicy garlic oil. I wish the tomato had been slightly roasted and placed over the meat. Would have been a better complement. Oh, they have military discount! Expensive - or I'd rather say a bit costly, but I'll definitely return. Great way to spend the evening after a decent hike. Dessert was pretty good as well - blackberry cobbler with blackberry ice cream. It didn't last enough for an image.

My family and I stayed at Big Meadows for the weekend and we were all very impressed by the restaurant! We had all our meals in the dining room and had wonderful service every time! The food was delicious and fast! You can tell a lot of thought was put into the menu! It is a bit expensive but it was worth it! My absolute favorite was the shrimp n grits- so creamy and shrimp cooked to perfection and my least favorite was the veggie chili- the veggies were too hard for my liking. Pictured: Breakfast omelette Breakfast sausage bowl Cheeseburger with pimento Pork bqq Sammy w sweet potato fries Chicken pot pie Caesar with veggie chili Grilled cheese Garden salad Shrimp n grits Fried green tomatoes- amazing. Yelp
We ate here three times. The two stars are for location, which is wonderful if you're staying in Shenandoah National Park, and for the good waitresses we had our first day in the park. Our first night there, my daughter and I split mushroom ravioli, which came with five ravioli drowned in cream sauce, thankfully with lots of mushrooms. The flavor was pretty good, but for the price I would not order it again. Worse were the hush puppies. Five small, mediocre pieces for $10 are nowhere near worth it. I had to go ask someone for cream and sugar because none was delivered even though it was requested when ordered. It was upwards of 45 minutes when our food finally arrived. I ordered French toast with fruit on top and my daughter ordered a short stack of pancakes. I had to go get butter and syrup because it didn't get delivered with the food either. Both dishes came out too cold to melt butter. I would not order French toast here again, as the bread was from a cheap loaf from the grocery store. The fruit on top was good with the exception of the overripe, mushy blueberries. Our waitress took no responsibility, blaming the kitchen for the back up, though they obviously have nothing to do with the serving of water, coffee, cream, sugar, and syrup. She said she had 12 tables and said she brought the food as soon as it was done and didn't know why it was cold. The pancakes we ordered the day before were on the table within five minutes and were hot. I'm just saying. To solidify the poor score, a boy at the table next to us knocked a glass off the table and we were shocked to see his dad come back with a broom and dust pan and sweep it up himself. I don't even know what to say about that, other than, what would have happened if he'd cut himself? So, while I do recommend Big Meadows Lodge as a wonderful place to stay, for dining I recommend Pollock Dining Room at Skyland Resort, which had exceptional service, large portions, and phenomenal food for about the same price.

Yelp
Full service restaurant inside iconic lodge within Shenandoah National Park, mile post 51 at Big Meadows. Built by CCC almost 100 years ago. Spectacular views from your table inside or outside. Opens for breakfast at 7:30, lunch, and dinner until 9pm. Service was good. Food was good. I would not recommend the biscuits and gravy--no meat in the gravy, so pretty plain tasting. The hotcakes and bacon were very good, great Starbucks coffee. Generous portions.

Yelp
A great place to get solid food if you're camping nearby at Big Meadows. The food was a little pricey, but you won't have many other options nearby. I would go back next time I camp at Big Meadows as service was fast and efficient.

Yelp
We come here at least once a year for lunch and always have a nice time. It's definitely rustic, but our meals have been consistently good (not great) and we love the blackberry desserts. Service is also very friendly! Bonus, dogs are allowed on the patio.

Yelp
When we arrived, my wife and I explained to the waitress that we were driving Skyline Drive for our anniversary and was looking to cap the event with an anniversary meal. Unfortunately, telling her didn't help. The waitress was exceeding friendly, but that turned out to be a bad thing. Throughout our meal, when we asked for something, she would leave, but then we would watch as she stopped and visited at length with every other table in the room -- while we waited for our drinks, for salads, for bread, etc. At one point, after leaving with our request for refills, she stopped at the table directly across the aisle from us (4 feet away) and talked with them for literally 10 minutes. I ordered the roasted turkey dinner which came with stuffing and broccoli. My wife ordered the meatloaf which came with mashed potatoes and onion straws. To go with our meals, we ordered an $8 bread basket which prompted great expectations. However, it came out with literally 2 store-bought Parkerhouse roles, 2 smallish pieces of cornbread and one other small non-descript bread item. You get far better at most other restaurants for free. It was definitely not a premium, $8 bread basket. Then both of our meals came out. Cold. The broccoli was the coldest dish (that was supposed to be hot) that I have ever been served at a restaurant. I asked the waitress if she could just microwave our two plates of food. They had pretty good flavor. They just weren't hot. She took them, and quite some time later, she came back -- without our food, and announced that they were remaking them. Then the dishes came out a second time - unbelievably, still not hot. I pleaded with her again - just microwave them. She took them and then came back a third time. STILL not hot. She was very apologetic, saying that she had zapped them for a minute. That clearly was not nearly enough. We asked (twice) to see the manager - once asking our waitress and when they didn't show up, and with our waitress missing, we asked another waitress to ask the manager to come see us. She finally showed up, and when we summarized our anniversary experience, she expressed regret, but explained that the waitress was fairly new and just needed some more training... (You think?) To make up for everything, she offered us free desert. We left. On Skyline Drive, go for the scenery but skip the Big Meadows Spottswood Dining Room. You will thank me for it.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised to find this full service restaurant along skyline drive. Full disclosure we were there on very first day reopening for the season. So wife couldn't have coffee because it had not been delivered yet. Haha. I had Virginia grilled cheese which was perfectly delicious She pork on gluten free bun which was nice to be available. Lunch menu somewhat small but totally acceptable. Large dining room with nice views. Would love to eat here again if ever have the opportunity.

Yelp
Fantastic view! The food was very good. We had the blackened tofu with dirty rice and the trout. Both were very tasty! The wait staff is friendly but unprofessional/unpolished, a little slow but not exceedingly. The outside dining is pet friendly and even offers three doggie dishes. Our pooch loved the chicken with carrots!
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
Had the peanut soup and it was way too thick. it wasn't served with any crackers. And if you want bread it will cost you $9! Also had the house salad and the serving was huge but the blackberry vinaigrette had seeds in it so it kept feeling like I was biting into dirt. I bit into major dirt 4 times. Service was pretty quick. The restaurant is in an old lodge with an outside patio so I enjoyed that. Way too over priced for what I ordered. If you want a really good meal, go to the Big Meadows Wayside Restaurant up the road and get the honey fried chicken or the Hog Back Smash burger.

Yelp
Hard to decide between four and three stars. Dinners have been very good so I went with four. Breakfasts are not much. You are a relatively captive audience when staying here and lucky the food is as good as it is. It is even better when hungry after a day of hiking. There are no reservations so go 30-40 minutes before you expect to eat. If you are lucky and go around sunset, the view can be spectacular. Dinners- Ravioli was very good. Do over Meatloaf was very good. Country Carbonara was enjoyed by two of our Party Trout was the best so far. Have it! Side salads are good and sides with meals are good but inconsistent with portions. Service is good some nights and meh others. My husband disagrees and says service was reasonably good all around.

Yelp
The restaurant is located in the lodge of the Big Meadows camp ground, and very convenient for a break from camp fire food. Its not air conditioned so it can get a little humid and stuffy inside, but its not too bad. Service was ok- friendly but not very attentive. The food was hit or miss. The strawberry salad for lunch was OK- the blackberry vinaigrette was the best part. The breakfast pancakes were OK, but nothing special. The best part of the meal and not be missed in the blackberry ice cream pie. A huge serving can feed 2-3 people easily, and is absolutely delicious. Maybe go just for the dessert!

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is beautiful. But that was probably the best part of our visit. We ordered the Trout and the Osso Bucco. Both were over salted and my Osso Bucco was a little on the tougher side. We did save room for their famous dessert - a blackberry ice cream pie, which was very good. Our server also came back and asked about ice cream (that supposedly came with the kids meals we also ordered) and we said that we would eventually opt for the pie to share so don't worry about the ice cream. Little did we know, he would bring that out moments later...while we were not even half done with our entrees. By the time we got to the pie, it was a melted mess. We may visit again, but maybe for breakfast instead.

Yelp
Weary hikers stumbled into this cute lodge in Shenandoah on a Saturday afternoon. We were fortunate to get the last open table and sat down for some lunch. We were all drawn to the turkey pot pie on the menu and half of our table decided to order it. The staff was friendly and the food came out relatively quickly. Turns out that the turkey pot pie was really turkey soup with a flaky pie-crust-like biscuit. That being said, it was pretty good, but it was lacking the normal ratio of crust to filling. Portion size was plenty and we found ourselves with no room for dessert. Overall a good experience and would recommend for other weary hikers....

Yelp
The food was AS amazing as everyone told us it would be. The catfish and fries were delicious. The Cobb salad with blackberry vinaigrette had egg, real bacon, avocado, roasted corn, blue cheese crumbles and toasted pecans. I loved it! The blackberry ice cream pie was so perfect, creamy and had a toasted top and the pie crust thin and flaky!
google avatar

Yelp
The waitstaff was rude, breakfast ends at 9:30 and lunch doesn't start until noon. I could go on but it's all negative. This all seemed to be on par with others opinions of this place as well. Was told to get a sandwich at the coffee bar in the hotel lobby. I go over order a sandwich and have it heated up. About 30 seconds after I get my sandwich someone from the restaurant shows up with a box of breakfast sandwiches... Can't win.

Yelp
[927] 6/19/2019 We visited this restaurant since we were hiking by the Lodge. We had lunch here Hubby had the burger w fries which he enjoyed My son has the grilled chicken with fruit which he loved. I had the chicken Caesar wrap which was tasty. It was cold chicken (not warm) but that's ok. It came w a seasonal soup which was minestrone (yummy) I would definitely go back for lunch.

Michelle K.

Yelp
We had several meals and drinks at the Spottswood Dining Room during our camping trip at Big Meadows and had a really positive experience. I was surprised to see other negative reviews. It's hard to beat the view from the dining room or outdoor deck. The service was mostly prompt and the food was all very good, especially breakfast. It's the only game in town but I was really pleased with everything we ate and drank and we returned several times. Would recommend to others!
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
We did not go for buffet breakfast because we didn't want to overeat. Hubby had pancakes and bacon which he said was fine. I had the lamest French toast ever. Flavor was not there-maybe it was the syrup-but nothing like French toast in a good NJ diner! Very small pieces. And no powdered sugar! I hate feeling remorse for wasting money on a mediocre meal. Service was friendly. Update 7/13/19 Dinner We decided to stay here for dinner tonight and try the Gourmet Burger. We were crossing our fingers that there would be a better chance that it could be better than breakfast. Man-we were right! The other yelp reviews regarding dinner were all unhelpful-not because folks did not write good reviews-it's just that all of them report that the food is mediocre and overpriced-and we have no choice to eat here anyway because there is no where else to go. (Skyland same issue) Also, a lot of the reviews are old and the photos not so helpful. Tonight we sat outside and it was beautiful! We had the spinach salad which was generous and full of blackberries, melon, candies walnuts, Gorgonzola cheese. It was so good! The spinach was fresh. The burger was delicious-perfectly medium rare and juicy. The fries-also excellent (unlike at skyland last night). The service was going well until when the waiter brought our burgers and spilled the ketchup on the mesh table....and then didn't come back to clean it. Fail! So although the food was excellent, the service knocks down dinner to a 4. (Breakfast remains a 3)
google avatar

Sparky T.

Yelp
We stayed at the Lodge cabins for 4 nights and ate here several times since there is little else available nearby. We were there at the end of the season so it was never very crowded and we typically had short waits for a table. Prices are a bit high, as might be expected. While the food was good, overall, there were a few issues. My burger ordered medium rare was closer to rare. My order of fish and chips was under cooked and raw/cold inside (but the fries were great). The waitress offered to replace it with a new order which meant waiting for it and when it arrived the fish was fine but the fries were not as good. ;( They also had a 'bread basket' option at dinner for $8 that was really disappointing with some items OK but the dinner roll was dry and appeared to have been microwaved. It's one thing to have bad bread when free but to pay $8 it should be better.
google avatar

Nora S.

Yelp
Me and my family visited the Spottswood Dining Room after stopping at the various overlooks inside of the park. We were greeted by notably kind staff, and were quickly served with glasses of water. For an appetizer, we chose the bread basket. This came with two rolls, two biscuits, and two cornbread muffins- all being thoroughly enjoyable. For our entrees, we ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken, chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, mushroom ravioli, and the carbonara. The biggest hit around the table was the Blackberry Hot Honey. This comes with the chicken and waffles, and was incredible. After asking our waiter, we found out that the honey was not sold in the gift shop, but they are working to add it to the selection relatively soon. Everybody loved their food. The presentation was beautiful, also. We ordered two desserts. The blackberry cobbler and pie. The desserts were huge and satisfied our party of 5. One star was lost. We had originally planned to stop at this restaurant for the beautiful view. When we were greeted by our hostess, we were informed of that we could not be seated outside due to the high temperature. This is not the restaurants fault, but it altered our experience overall. So, maybe don't go on an especially hot day if you're wanting to sit outside. Overall, our dinning experience at Spottswood was amazingly pleasant!

Yelp
The Spottswood Dining Room is located in the Big Meadows Lodge, and is beautifully rustic as well as historic. It has a fantastic view, especially at sunset. The vaulted wooden ceiling is amazing, as is the natural stone fireplace. It is a near-fine-dine located in an amazing National Park, a perfect place to have a memorable meal to make your experience complete! The dishes available are tied to the park's natural resources, as well as history. Blackberry desserts are featured, and my favorite was certainly the blackberry ice cream. Very delicious! The Apple Bread Pudding was another great dessert. The New Deal Turkey goes back to the history of the park, and is an excellent meal. Likewise the Hoover's Rainbow Trout hearkens to the area history. The trout is covered in a mound of crabmeat which is again an East Coast treat. There is also a hearty Meadows Meatloaf that is a luscious meal to fill up a hungry hiker. If one is looking for a lighter meal, there are nice salads and sandwiches that can fit the bill. Service was prompt and courteous in our experience. We sometimes had to wait a short while to be seated, when business was bustling. However, one can wait in the lodge's main room and watch TV or play board games while one waits. Certainly a good place to pass the time...

Amelia W.

Yelp
Had an incredible dinner at the lodge. Service was great and they easily accommodated our large (12 person group). The mushroom ravioli was amazing. One of my friends had crab cakes and loved them as well. Yummy

Yelp
I've have dinner and lunch here. The turkey platter for dinner was very tasty, plenty food after a long hike and mainly made with local ingredients. The stuffing was very good, everything made from scratch with that classic American touch but modern presentation. They also serve a great selection of local Virginia beers. The carrot and ginger soup was so good, kept me wanting more. The dinner rolls were very fresh and had a sweet glaze. They have live music both Friday and Saturday night at the bar downstairs. It also has a small menu with things like wings, pizza and salads. Coffee was standard.  I ordered the gourmet burger with fries. It was very juicy, crispy fries and a great lunch! Everything in the menu looks really good. It's definitely worth a meal or two here. Friendly staff too. Fresh cut flowers on the dining tables with a great view. Highly recommend!

Aviv G.

Yelp
Very friendly servers and you can dine on the deck and enjoy fresh air and the view. Typical fare fir lunch -- burgers were good.

B H.

Yelp
Only game in town. Breakfast: over easy eggs overcooked. Bacon undercooked limp not crispy. Dinner was good. I had Turkey dinner and my wife had meatloaf both had ample portions. Service was good during the week so not to busy.
google avatar

R D.

Yelp
I must praise the service here. We had 2 dinners and a light breakfast (only option nearby), and the dinner portions were too big for one. The Turkey dinner was very good - came with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish, and green beans. We also had a soup special that was described as a potato soup, but it was very sour to us and neither of us could eat more than a bite. It could be us, but the chili was too spicy for us to bear. The Caesar salads were on point and very good.
google avatar

Tim D.

Yelp
Ordered the chicken Caesar wrap and the chicken fried steak. Chicken Caesar wrap was too peppery due to the chicken being black with pepper. The Mac & cheese was dry, gummy & room temperature. The chicken fried steak was good, but the gravy was congealed on it. The mashed potatoes were just clumps. The whole dish was room temperature so I think it was waiting in the pass for awhile. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Kathleen W.

Yelp
So Spotswood dining room is really the only option for eating at Big Meadows Lodge. We went for dinner and the food was meh at best. I got the grilled cheese. Came with Virginia Ham, Apples, Gouda Cheese and Apple Cider mustard on sourdough. The Gouda tasted processed and was not "melty". For $15 I expect a better quality sandwich. My husband and son got the angus burgers. They enjoyed them. My eldest son got the fish and chips and was happy with his food although I felt the portion was small in conjunction with the price. My daughter got the Cesar salad. It was a pretty basic salad. All in all I guess the moral of the story is get the burger or pack your own food
google avatar

Karl B.

Yelp
This is a comfortable place for a nice meal on the Skyline Drive. The gourmet burger is a flavorful half-pound of beef with nice trimmings and a fresh side salad. This is a real handful - ask for extra napkins. Service was friendly. The view over the valley is beautiful.
google avatar

Saburn S.

Yelp
We came up up to the Lodge and we all got a dessert after cooking burgers on the Blackstone Griddle at the campsite for lunch. Tim and Jess each got the Blackberry Cobbler with blackberry ice cream on it. Don and I shared a piece of their Blackberry Ice Cream pie and I asked for chocolate sauce instead of the blackberry compote because I don't like the seeds. That's also why I don't get the cobbler. Unfortunately we'd eaten most of our pie before I took the picture. We got a table out on the balcony with a view of the Shenandoah Valley.
google avatar

Panda N.

Yelp
BlackBerry ice cream pie was so SMALL. The fish was much smaller than before. They used to have large size desert. But no more. The service is very bad. We waited the places to come for the fish and chips. As soon as the waitress brought the plates, the old lady took them from us...

Yelp
Spotswood dining is part of the Shenandoah national park restaurants. It was open and they were practicing social distancing. I had to try the Virginian grilled cheese as I never heard of it before. It had country ham, smoked Gouda, Granny Smith apple slices, lettuce tomato, apple cider mustard, and grilled sourdough bread. I was a little concerned ordering this has all these different taste together kind of concerning to me. But am I surprised it was a very good sandwich. I thought it was a little high in price as it rang in at $14 but that did include fries. My wife purchased the Angus burger which was a 6 ounce grilled patty with your basic sandwich toppings hers rang in just a little over $13 and again it did include the fries. The menu was kind of small as the most are From our current circumstances. The heat was out which made it rather cold that afternoon. They had a fire going in the fireplace which kind of made it though romantic lunch I guess. If you're not wanting to pay high price for a national Park restaurant I would suggest a picnic basket.

Yelp
Spottswood Dining Room is the restaurant at Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park. With breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, it offers a selection of American classics like the New Deal Turkey Platter or Roosevelt's Fried Chicken and a few tempting delights like their famous Mile High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie. I tried the Turkey Pot Pie and was immediately impressed with the presentation and the ultra light and flaky Puff Pastry Crust. It's a more refined approach to a classically heavy dish. With local Turkey, Carrots, Celery, Onions, Potatoes, and Sweet Peas in a Traditional Sauce. Loved it. Olivia tried the Spottswood Chef Salad which was a customary Romaine Lettuce salad with a Cucumber, Grape Tomatoes, Black Olives, Crumbled Egg, Smoked Turkey, Tavern Ham, and Swiss & Cheddar Cheese. Though it wasn't spectacular, the salad was satisfying. She also got a cup of red Manhattan Clam Chowder that I didn't get a chance to try. It must of been good. Others sampled were a fairly standard Shenandoah Burger (Double Stack Fresh Burger, Caramelized Onions, Potato Roll with Tomato and Lettuce) and The Meadows (a tender Pasta dish loaded with Roasted Farm Vegetables, Herbs, and a Marinara Sauce). Both were safe options for travelers. For dessert, we split a Blackberry Sundae with two scoops of their signature Blackberry Ice Cream and Blackberry Syrup...yummy sweet creaminess. Service was outstanding from the moment we walked in until leaving. With reasonable prices and such friendly service, this was a welcome relaxation opportunity for our vacation compared to the majority of tourist sites we visited. Spottswood Dining Room has a full side of windows offering a majestic view of the Shenandoah Mountains with food and service to match their splendor.

Yelp
The good. Beautiful views in a historic dining room. The bad, pretty much everything else. When staying at the lodge, you don't have many options. So we tried both Dinner and breakfast. The gourmet burger was raw in the middle. Not rare, truly raw, but it had potential to be good if cooked properly. I had the beet salad, which was okay. The special blackberry kale salad was too much kale but berries and dressing was good. The blackberry pie, delicious. In the a.m. the buffet was okay. Coffee weak. Our third night there, we went into front Royal and brought back sandwiches. We couldn't do the restaurant again. I recommend packing the cooler and skipping the restaurant.

Yelp
The hostess was very rude! I said "table for 2 please." Zero response she just threw the menus down for us. Not a great way to welcome customers to a restaurant. Our server Mike was fine. We had good views of the mountains, which was really the only enjoyable thing about our meal. The food was bland so if you are okay with plain food then this is your place. The chicken quesadillas was mediocre, the cheese was not melted just laying on top. The chicken was super bland, but added salsa and that made it easier to eat. The roasted chicken was SO plain, zero flavor. It was like eating hospital food. The presentation of the french fries was a nice touch in the silver pail bucket. The cole slaw did not taste right either. Was told by the waiter the expresso machine was broken, so no coffee. The lounge area right outside was very comfortable with rocking chairs, fireplace , small table for kids, game of checkers, and books to read. The food was terrible, unless you just stick to fries and a drink.

Yelp
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! This was the worst restaurant experience that I've had since I can remember. First, the host was incredibly rude. When I asked to get a table outside overlooking the mountains, he said "you're not sitting there unless you have an animal." That was the first of many red flags about this dump of a restaurant. Second, we waited for over one hour for our food only to have it served to us cold. It wasn't just one plate that was cold. Every single one of the 4 meals that we ordered felt like they were sitting in the refrigerator for an hour. I have never experienced this anywhere as long as I have been alive. Third, the menu was incredibly overpriced. Lastly, the cold "medium" steak had the texture of a leather shoe. All in all, this is a terrible place to "eat" and would not recommend it to anyone. Save your money, time, and patience and STAY AWAY!

Yelp
Good trout and fresh salad tonight. Service was good, had a bit of a wait on Monday late.

Yelp
If this place were located anywhere near one or more competing restaurants, it would not exist. Bad food, bad service, not sure what else to say. Avoid. My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch while headed south on the Skyline Drive. We each ordered just a bowl of chili, since we were in a hurry. Waited a long time for it. The chili was cold and was not as described on the menu. The dining room looked like it hadn't been cleaned in decades. The server was obviously being overworked, and was being yelled at by other customers, so we chose not to complain at that time.

Yelp
As a vegan vegetarian I was extremely grateful for the veggie burger. I think it's Beyond Beef. The salad options and the veggie chili were really good. Fantastic BlackBerry jams and jellies. I couldn't stop eating them. Breakfast oatmeal is delicious. Why IDK but really good. They also have a flatbread mushroom sandwich. This more of a throwback to yesteryear. Wooden tables. Plain chairs. They were recently celebrating 80 years-the food was good, but it's a rustic type setting which is befitting considering all the hiking trails etc... Looking at some of the reviews and most likely based on some of the pricing, I think people come to a national park and are expecting fine dining with their hikes? Did you pack a ballgown and tuxedo?? I'm missing something if that's the expectation.

Yelp
The breakfast buffet was awesome. There was something on the menu for everyone in the family. The view from the back porch was beautiful!

Yelp
The food and the service are fantastic. Fried Chicken, catfish, and turkey with stuffing are regular features. The wine list is exceptional and dining around evening and sunset are not to be missed as the view west out the windows is exceptional.

Yelp
This morning, we had breakfast here right when they opened at 730am. We were very disappointed. The bacon was hard as a hard cracker and tasted rancid. The eggs were the worst scrambled eggs I have ever seen or tasted. Spit out the first bite. The biscuit was try and tasted like margarine. The grits tasted like plain boxed grits boiled with no butter. Edible but blah. The coffee was barely drinkable. We should never of tried this place again! Years ago we were here for lunch and the food was bad then. Quality was so inferior to food served as both WV and Kentucky State Parks. This is a spot in a national park so different deal.

Yelp
Chili was cold, no scallions as stated. BlackBerry "cobbler" was not really cobbler but more like a piece of pie chopped up and scraped into a cast iron mini skillet with no whip cream or blackberry sauce as stated on menu. When asked, waiter says it was a misprint on the menu but brought whip cream sprayed from a can. Would give lower if possible.

Yelp
The food was mediocre. The fish in the fish and chips was straight up bad. Also witnessed some questionable/potentially discriminatory service in the tap room. (E.g., a certain customer was not able to order drinks as easily.) This doesn't speak for all the staff because we saw another staff member step in to help. Wouldn't really recommend the restaurant but the lodge overall is nice and rustic with good views. We'll be back...with our own food.

Yelp
This place was a rest on our bike trip. We stopped here for lunch and got there right when it opened. The dining room is a great rustic charm to it. The view from the patio is unbeatable. We sat inside since there was five of us. I did not notice tables large enough to seat more than two but I did not look that hard. We were seated after a few minute delay. This was due to the place just opening and we were told they did not want to flood one server with too many tables. We ordered the food which was just ok. I ordered the hummus appetizer and the falafel meal. I ordered no cheese on my side salad which I received but they put cheese on my hummus. It was not mentioned on the menu that cheese was included. I think the server could have told me when I requested no cheese on my salad. The falafel was overdone which made it extremely dry. There was a small amount of sauce but not enough to help. My friend ordered a bowl of chili and it came without a spoon. When we asked the server for one he said he would be right back. He never came back so we ended up eating a bowl of chili with a fork. The server only came back and addressed the issue when he overheard us talking about eating chili with a fork. He made some remark the he was coming back but was swamped by tables. If it was few minutes I would have agreed, but my friend ate a whole bowl of chili before he even came back. I would have just liked an apology for the mistake and move on. He should have definitely gave my friend some sort of discount or not charged him at all.

Yelp
Wow Dinner was fantastic. Little skeptical due to other reviews up and down but it was wonderful. I had Salad and Summer Vegetable Stew and my husband had Pot Roast. All great. Also had Blackberry Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream - again Yum. And my Husband had a traditional sundae which he also loved. Kristy, our waitress was also friendly, helpful, and prompt. Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
Food was actually pretty good and staff was kind, but clearly they were understaffed. Service was slooooooow. Make sure you have more than 2 h for dinner. They could do twice as much business if they hired more staff. View from the patio was lovely but bring layers as it's chilly up there even if the day is really warm.

Yelp
Mediocre at best and sadly, only VA wines to choose from. The waitstaff was super nice and the service was fast, but the food is brought to you by Sysco. "Seasonal" vegetables from a can... Which season is it? Stick to the Tap Room fare. Same Sysco foods but at half the price.

Yelp
Good food and okay service and a seat by the window to enjoy the view. Solid choice for lunch and will probably split a meal with my partner next time we visit. Enjoyed the signature blackberry dessert. Very tasty.

Yelp
Had dinner here after hiking on the AT for 17 miles. Wanted a hearty meal and sort of got one. The waiter was not attentive and I had to get up to speed the process along. Left us waiting for ketchup with our fries. The gourmet burger was relatively tasty. The pot roast ($17) could've been microwaved straight from a TV dinner for the flavor and portion. Really disappointed overall. The saving grace was their good local beer selection. Kudos for that.
