Critic Giles Coren Says Brat in Shoreditch Is Mind-Blowing | Eater London

"A cheerful, gregarious Hackney boozer that has gone fully vegan without the proselytising — even drinks are adjusted to avoid animal-derived finings. The menu delivers a normal gastropub experience reimagined through vibrant, comforting dishes that aim for recognisability (not ideology), with highlights including an oddly realistic nori-and-tofu “tofish.” Meat-eaters reportedly relax into the experience rather than spar over authenticity, and the overall atmosphere is fun and unpretentious." - George Reynolds

Google
Bar is a little large for the building. Service horrible. Asked for manager, but was told he was too busy to come talk with me. Was gonna order food , but couldn't get anyone to wait on us. The band was fantastic! Next was the name. I would definitely come back to see them.

Came here over the weekend while visiting friends in the area. The bartender told me and couple friends (we are 22 and 23) that our IDs were fake and asked us to leave or we could have them scanned by the manager. We asked if the manager could take a look and scan them, but he refused to even look, saying if the bartender said they’re fake they must be fake and we had to leave. We asked if there was anything we could do to show that they are real, but were told no. The staff members were disrespectful and dismissive throughout the interaction.

Google
This is an incredibly fun place to watch an Eagles game, though it feels very much like a locals bar. Service was a tad slow. Their food options are mostly limited to burgers, sandwiches and bar food snacks. I would not come solely for the food, but would definitely return for the great atmosphere and drinks!

Google
Great place to have a lunch special between 11:00 and 2:00 they have $2 sandwiches. Recommended.

Google
Eagles night at spread eagle tavern. Great crowd. And half price pretzels during the game.

Google
Relaxed atmosphere. Great energy! Staff very slow with a taste of rude. Prices vary through day and are overly high (20 for a cocktail)

The food is delicious and quite affordable. My friends and I weren't even charged for soft drinks. Our young waitress was quite friendly, efficient and accommodating! The atmosphere was quite clean as well as enjoyable, with classic rock tunes to sing along to!

Environment is nice and chill here. Could be an easy go to! Customer service advice: if you need up an order, correct it immediately. Don't allow your consumer to settle for something they didn't order... I shouldn't have to pay for the wrong food AND the right food when it was confirmed that it was entered correctly as a chicken cheesteak and made incorrectly as a regular red meat cheesteak. When I finally got tired of eating the meal that I DIDN'T order and I made y'all finally replace it to what I should've already had. Quick to refill my beer, just not to fix problems, unless you finally demand it after speaking to multiple employees.. That extra money I spent I should've saved by not tipping, but unfortunately that's not who I am. So it was just wasted money on my end.

Yelp
I wanted to update my review. Lately the Spread Eagle is... well, becoming more of just an average spot, in my opinion. I mostly end up here because my friends like it -- not because it's my first choice. There are a few decent highlights: $2 lunches, live bands, and pool tables (though sadly, not free ). But overall, it feels like they're charging premium prices for dive bar quality. The last visit our martinis were so expensive! The food is just okay, and when compared to places like Dominic's Tavern, Bobby Ray's, Mulligan's, or Irish Hill, the beer and food specials are limited and not nearly as competitive. While they have a few specials during the games, they need to expand this thinking! And the outdoor area? Let's just say it's not the vibe -- smells like a dirty ashtray and feels like an afterthought. When I think of a comfortable outdoor hangout, The Rail in Barrington comes to mind -- clean, inviting, and somewhere you actually want to hang out. In short, The Spread has potential, but they've got work to do if they want to keep up with the better bars in the area.

Yelp
Absolutely the rudest bartenders I've ever come across.. two young girls and a man named Brian.. I literally went there 2 days ago. My bill was $20.68.. I tipped them $20 on that tab despite their rudeness.. went back again tonight.. they acted as if I was invisible n took forever to get a drink.. asked for a menu and the one girl basically threw the menu at me without saying a word.. despite the fact I said please and thank you.. unreal!

Yelp
My wife and I had the worst cheesteaks of all time. There was a sickening spice on the sandwiches. Also, the prices are too high for what you get. I suggest getting a different cook and lowering prices.

Yelp
Don't know what to say about this place. Ordered a burger and tots. Waited passed all of my party receiving their food. Bar tender/waitress told me that my burger was delivered to someone else by accident. She said a new burger was being made and it would be on the house. Waited another 30 minutes and saw three other burgers delivered in that time. I was then told there was only one cook in the kitchen. I told them to close my tab and cancel the burger. Ridiculous, here to see my friend's band and have to stop ordering drinks and food in the first set on principle. We will never come back. Not the bar tender/waitresses problem, but management is not doing what it should. Two free drinks doesn't take away a bad experience. Manager/owner didn't even come over to apologize, stayed at the bar with his drink.

Yelp
Asked us to leave with a few minutes left in an eagles playoff game because they wanted to close the bar, after we tipped,of course Food was ok. We'll never step foot in there again

Yelp
Been in here a few times. Food is always good service is always on point. This is the only place in the area that has 609 ipa and I love it. The big guy bartender Chuck is great. Moves surprisingly quick behind the bar for a bigger guy. I have also been in with Leah as the bartender who is extra sweet and also very prompt with service. Overall the place is very clean including the bathroom. Food is always good and even though I'm not from Mount Ephraim I never feel I welcomed here. Great place over all. Food ,service, and cleanliness A+. A good choice for a local bar!! Highly recommended!

Yelp
The one and only time I ever ordered from here they gave me a lackluster sandwich and stale chips. It's like they used pre-packaged Shop Rite deli meat for my Turkey Club and what appeared appeared to be week-old crumbs of an open bag of Lays. I feel dumb for even trying this place, I mean, look at the name

Yelp
BLECK! This place is B-O-R-I-N-G! Has absolutely no personality. Our bartender was aloof and almost annoyed at us being there. The food server was great. I'm not sure how they split up tips but if I could I would have only tipped the waitress. They also have 2 different receipts for food and alcohol. So even though it was a dead Wednesday evening is still took us almost 10 minutes to get our tab. The couple of other bartenders seemed nice but for some reason the one we got stuck with was awful. Their beer selection sucks. The drinks are about $2 overpriced. We got the fried Mac and cheese, which was good enough to hold us over til we found a place to hang out at for a few hours. I'd pass on this one folks.

Yelp
Ahhhhh I love this place. The portions are great and the staff is super friendly and fun. It's a great weekend hangout spot- even with everything being outdoors now. It's become my favorite drinking spot in the last year. I can't wait until everything opens back up to watch sports again on the TVs inside!

Yelp
Friendly staff. Good food and prices. Had their wings on multiple occassions and they are always fantastic. They are always advertising new or returning food items so they keep their menu fresh. When you order food, you pay the waitress seperate from the bartender even if you are sitting at the bar. Nice local establishment.

Yelp
I went here to meet up with some friends on a Saturday afternoon/evening. My companion and I had never heard of the place despite it not being too far away from home. We walked in and had it not been for our other friends who hadn't arrived yet, we would have left. I hate bars that have that empty, echoing feeling and this place definitely has it. It was loud despite having very few people in it. The plain walls and high ceilings made you feel very exposed and unwelcome. We ordered a couple of Yuenglings and while I like Yuengling, I would have preferred more variety to the beer list. Once our friends showed we ordered food, which we discovered we had to do separately from our regular tab. We also were asked if we minded closing out our tab with our original bartender since she was done for the day. A friend and I ordered a burger with an egg as one of our toppings. The waitress seemed confused and said they didn't have eggs. It's one thing if you're out of them, but I'm just reading it off the menu, not making up fictional toppings. After a while our food came out; 3 greasy burgers and one veggie wrap that was originally brought out as a veggie burger. The waitress was nice, but mixing up the food and not knowing the menu was not great. All in all, we ate some of our food, finished up our beers, paid our 3 separate tabs (ridiculous system), and left. I have no desire to return. I like a good dive bar every now and then, but this is a dive pretending to be something better.

Yelp
I love their wings, and their crab fries (with real crab meat! omg... sooo good!!)... and their nachos. THEY GIVE YOU SO MANY NACHOS!!! Just not on tuesdays, i think because theyre half priced on tuesdays, so as a result, theyre like, half sized. Love the staff, the place is always clean, and it's a great atmosphere. Definitely my favorite weekend spot. The best part about it, the younger crowd doesnt seem to gravitate towards this place as much as people of my own age, so there's not a lot of obnoxious 21 year olds running around the place.

Yelp
Tater tots were pretty good, they had a nice crunch on the outside and a soft inside, were seasoned well. The burger was greasy, the veggie burger had a sort of gross flavor and texture, the vegetable wrap was a mess. Cheaper beer, but nothing really interesting on tap. This seems to be a place to order Miller Lite or the like. It's weird how tall the ceiling is, any quiet conversation echoes throughout the bar. There were only 10-15 people in the bar when we showed up, and it was pretty loud for people chit chatting with one another. It looks to be newly remodeled, but it doesn't look like they put the money in the right place. I like Steph C.'s review. I agree with a lot of those things.

Yelp
Came here for the first time last week. Was surprised to see the bar mostly empty as it was clean and well lit. Our bartender Chris was friendly and informative. We opted for the dry rub wings which were great. My husband has been craving them ever since! We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Went on cinco de mayo... which was awesome because nobody else thought to do that. Bartenders were super friendly and quick with the drinks and the wings were awesome- which says a lot because I'm picky. Looking forward to going back again!

Yelp
To set the scene: Busy Saturday Night around 10 pm, early Spring. We live less than a mile from the relatively new Spread and were so excited when we saw the construction. The outside is gorgeous, but that's pretty much where the positive stops. As someone who worked in bars all through college and being married to someone who runs them, it was so blatantly apparent this place is owned by people who thought resurrecting an old bar would be a "fun" or "cool" idea, but actually had no restaurant experience other than enjoying drinking in them. Unfortunately all of the money was spent on the exterior. The interior, in addition to the lay out being mind boggling, is bare and lifeless compared to outside. The TVs are hung in such a way that it's virtually impossible to see them unless you're sitting directly in front of them. The bartenders were nice, albeit clearly still working the kinks out and we didn't wait long for drinks. What really rubbed me the wrong way was the massive security camera hanging over the POS machine, just waiting to catch them stealing, it's tacky and looks like you don't trust your staff. The taps were not impressive, given our vibrant NJ craft beer scene. Some cash only places still operate with two different tabs: one for bar and one for the kitchen, therefore you need a server to order food. For some strange reason The Spread operates this way. The use of a POS system (ya know where your ticket prints out on the line) eliminates the need for a server to take the order and run it back to the kitchen. Having two separate checks in an updated restaurant is both annoying and non sensical. This should be changed. What really killed this place for me is the food. If the food was spectacular I would be able to get past the stuff above no problem. We started with the fried mac and cheese bites and sweet potato fries. The fries were incredibly dry and were not served with any horseradish sauce or cinnamon sauce. Both were clearly from a frozen bag. Why are you not making these things fresh?! The lack of fresh ingredients and house prepped food was so disappointing. The club sandwich was fine, but I can make that at home. I can also purchase frozen sweet potato fries and frozen Mac and cheese. All in all, the Spread has a lot of work to do across the board. I would love to support a local small business, but we'll continue going to PJs and the Pour House instead.

Yelp
Had the Roast pork sandwich. Definitely not a top 5. Served on hamburger bun and tasted like it was microwave to melt cheese. Old bay fries ok but for $4.50 you would think serving would be little bigger. The place is nice but was dead for 4:30

Yelp
Is it bad that I was at a bar on a Saturday night and I couldn't help but yawn the whole time?? So boring! Plain walls, low music, bright lighting...certainly didn't feel like your typical Saturday night go to bar. Also poor advertising and no sign out front!

Yelp
Stopped in to check out the new spread... nice architecture seems clean, and well mantained. Food was lacking and left much to be desired. It seemed like all the food was either fried or frozen; nothing spectacular or unique on the menu and prices are kind of high. Almost sent my food back. If I wanted to eat like this I'd just go to the frozen food isle at walmart.(This is coming from a professional cook). My bartender who's name I never got (short, dark hair, pretty eyes), along with the others, was nice and the service behind the bar was great, especially considering the fact that there was way too many working compared to the amount of people. Not sure who the dudes in work boots and camo yelling at everyone were but they completely ruined the experience. These guys acted like idiots, but obiously had some kind of voice in the business... managers? Maybe owners? God, I hope not. All in all, interesting place? Not sure if I would come back though. They don't have a half star and I don't think they deserve to be rounded up.

Yelp
Our favorite place to go after work. Always great hospitality and food without burning a hole through the wallet.

Yelp
I met with some friends here for a couple drinks and lunch. The bar and food were great. The service was friendly and quick. I really enjoyed the visit and will absolutely go back again.

Yelp
Went in on a Monday night when there was 15 people at the bar, and 2 two tops. We came in as a four top, two arriving before the others. The waitress came up to us before we even sat down and asked for our drink orders, one amaretto sour and one Malibu bay breeze. Took 5 minutes for the drinks to be made and for them to be delivered to our table. Then, our third table member arrived and was here for 5 whole minutes with our server no where in site. She only has two other tables so where was she? So our table member went up to the bar to ask the bartender for drinks who told her "order through your server" and walked off. Then, our fourth table member came in and our server was still no where in site. So after a couple of more minutes, the server finally comes over and and takes their drink orders, two gin and tonics. Then the server leaves and the bartender comes over to clarify what type of gin they wanted. When the server brings those gin and tonics over, after a couple of minutes, we ordered another Malibu bay breeze and our food were ordered. The bay breeze took another 5 minutes to arrive at the table. In a bar that was not busy AT ALL, it should not have taken this long each time. Our food finally arrives, in a timely fashion I might add, and I got a pork roll and cheese and French fries. Immediately I can tell that the fries were old, and recooked, since I've worked in the food industry for 4 years. Someone else got the tator tots and bacon, and it only had enough cheese to cover the top few, for a $9 dish. And the tuna fish sandwich that was supposed to come with chips, came out without chips, and the veggie burger that we requested cheese with, came without cheese. So 0/4 by now. So we send back the French fries, the tator tots, tuna and veggie burger. They sent out a huge basket of French fries and chips and covered the tator tots in cheese so much that they were swimming and weren't crunchy anymore. The only reason I gave one star was that the food came out in a timely fashion, but completely wrong. So they don't even really deserve one star. Will not recommend.
