"The Green Lake Spud (not to be confused with Alki Spud, which is owned by Ivar's) has been a fish and chips institution in Seattle since 1940. You can expect breaded cod so juicy and tangy it's like eating a mozzarella stick, hand-cut potatoes fried fresh without so much as a lick of grease, relish-y tartar sauce, and some of the greatest onion rings in town. Pair it all with a big pickle or glass of natural wine—or, more realistically, both. "The Green Lake Spud (not to be confused with Alki Spud, which is owned by the Ivar's folks) has been a fish and chips institution in Seattle since 1940. And after a nearly-three-year hiatus, they're back with an interior—and branding—remodel. You can still expect breaded cod so juicy and tangy it's like eating a mozzarella stick, hand-cut potatoes fried fresh without so much as a lick of grease, relish-y tartar sauce, and some of the greatest onion rings in town. We went here for the first time in almost ten years. It felt like it had only been a week. The same great fish and chips, friendly employees, and fast service. Listen, people; it's not rocket science: order to-go, bring your own drinks and tartar sauce, and enjoy your food across the street at beautiful Juanita Beach. It cost us fifteen dollars a piece, including tip. I'll show myself out...

Google
Great food and service. I had the fish and chips and I will be back to try more. There were seats when I went but if it’s nice out it would be good to eat it at the park across the street too.

Google
Cute place. Do not like the sauce! Vinegar overload. The food is good but the tartar sauce is not. Sadly. All the sauce I tried were heavy on either vinegar or lemon. Bitter. The ketchup was normal. It’s really good fish and fries but I would bring my own tartar next time. Kinda ruined it. The clam chowder is quite good. I also had a delicious elder pear lemon cider. Not sure I will stop here again.

Google
Great little fish place I stop into when I'm in the area. Yes pricey but good fish. The new milkshake is best in the land. Would drive for it if nothing else. Great owners and staff.

Justin Lau

Google
Omg this place is incredible, the staff was great and my family felt very welcomed here. The clam chowder was very good. I also got their chicken burger and the flavor was very unique, sweet and savory at the same time. The 3 piece fish and chips was very fulfilling, each piece was huge

Google
Try the Cajun fish tacos! And when you get a side of spuds, check the hot sauce/condiments bar for both local Seattle hot sauce to try, as well as a custom garlic infused vinegar - a must try on fries! Their hot sauce selection is impressive and features many of the options found at our local farmers markets.

Kelly Downing

Google
Had the chicken and chips, fast and friendly service. Hottest (temp) food I’ve had in Kirkland, fresh out of the fryer to our table very quickly, fried in separate oil than the fish. Free refills on the drinks, enough fry’s to split with someone.

John Imperial

Google
Growing up my family owned a seafood market & we use to fry fish often using left over cuts... a little batter, some panko, a lot of hot oil and voila! Spuds hits the same way I remember frying fish back in the day... dee-licous. Whenever I visit my mom out here I always make a point to stop by Spuds & enjoy their cod fish, shrimp, oysters, & chips while walking down memory lane.

Yelp
Such a great spot for a piping hot bowl of chowder and some fresh fish and chips near the water! Parking was easy to find. We didn't see the parking in front, so we parked in the back and saw their beautiful mural! Indoor and outdoor seating is available. We came on a pretty stormy day so we ate indoors. It's a cute little spot with history. The staff were all very friendly! Food: + vanilla milkshake - soo good and pefect with fries + cod fish and chips - very fresh and has a nice crisp outside, paired well with the vinegar and aiolis + fish tacos - very flavorful and so tasty! + crab chowder - yummy! my husband really liked this! + clam chowder - this was my favorite! Overall, a really nice spot! Especially because it's steps away from the water and Juanita beach park.

Yelp
We have been going to Spuds for as long as I can remember. They haven't changed one bit over the years. Still fresh crispy delicious fish, tasty fries and my absolute favorite are the batter fried mushrooms. Don't forget to pour on the malt vinegar and order extra tartar because the portions are very generous and those little cups empty out fast!

Justin L.

Yelp
Today I learned that Spud's Juanita location has been there for awhile! Conveniently located by the Juanita Beach Park, we visited for the first time over the weekend for lunch. We went right at opening and so the restaurant was pretty quiet, with plenty of seating available. Scott and his team at the restaurant were very helpful and friendly when we visited, and recommended that we try the: - Cod Fish & Chips - A Spud staple! - Prawn & Chips - The prawns were so meaty - Cajun Fish Tacos - Mike's new favorite - Fried Mushrooms - Clam Chowder - Another staple for me With its proximity to the popular park, Spud Fish & Chips is an easy choice for lunch or dinner, with both walking access and parking spots available in front and behind the restaurant.

Yelp
Came in on a sunny weekend before heading to the Juanita Beach across the street. Parking was wonderful and plentiful. Service was quick and friendly. The dinning room looks dated but overall clean. The few circling flies were annoying but probably flew in from outside. The foods....were however not very good. The clam chowder was bland, thick but not much content. The clam meats were chopped up into very very tiny pieces and the soup was thick but not creamy. The potatoes were almost nonexistent. The fish and chips were pretty mediocre. Mikeshake was made so thick that there is no way you can drink it out of a straw. The calamari was the worst of all. The breading literally just fell off and was very greasy, please see my photo. Overall the dining experience was not good.

Christopher Allen M.

Yelp
Came after spending some time paddle boarding. We got there pretty close to closing time and they were nice enough to serve us which we were appreciative of and we received our food quite fast. The counter service and intercom system were quick and easy for us. There was plenty of outdoor seating since we were wet. The fish and fries were pretty basic and were good for satisfying a craving. The location of it as a short walk from the park is definitely the biggest appeal and the environment was lovely as we ate there near sunset. Overall would come back for a quick bite

Mandy L.

Yelp
Excellent food. Love the friendly staff and down-to-earth interior. The halibut& chips is to die for. This is a locally-owned fish & chips shop...support local! Always fun to get food to go (they have Chow Now and the other apps) and eat in the waterfront park across the street.

Tony J.

Yelp
Fish and chips place in Juanita, across the street from Juanita Beach Park. Small interior with some picnic tables out front for outdoors seating. Can see a bit of the lake and the park if you sit outside. Menu is various fried fish and other seafood. Got the two piece cod fish and chips which $16. Additional $3.50 ish for a fountain drink (with refills) and one tartar sauce. Actually ended up with 3 pieces of fish (not sure if intentional). Decent amount of fish. Classic fried fish taste without much flavoring. Probably should have added a little salt on my own. Batter is crisp and a little hard on the first chew, but fine after that. Decent amount of fries, but they weren't crispy and not quite as good as McDs. Overall, alright fish and chips for the price.

glen c.

Yelp
Wow, $21 bucks for one piece of halibut n chips. Halibut thin, tasteless, chips the same.

Judy R.

Yelp
I went with a friend and we tried the tjeee pieces of fish and chips and the oysters and chips plus we had the chowder. Both seafood dishes were inedible. Terribly overcooked. Way too Much batter and greasy. The only thing we ate was the chowder and that was mediocre but edible. This place really shouldn't be I. Business.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Everything was fresh and good. We ordered cod and chips, a milkshake and an Ollipop. Food was fresh and hot; generous pieces of fish. Old school hangout. I liked it a lot.

Ron C.

Yelp
Terrible, not even close to the same as Alki. All prep- packaged, have to pay for Tatar that is also prepackaged and taste nothing like spuds at Alki! Don't waste you time, you can get better any where else

Chris V.

Yelp
Spent 20.21 for two fish , fries with no salt and a medium drink Fish - was decent 6/10 nothing to write home about or rave to a friend about .not much seasoning for the fish fish was definitely dry around the edges . . Fries - horrible . No salt no flavor . Just horrible . Drink -3.25 for a drink with refills so that's not too bad Overall taste 5/10 Value : 4/10 Customer service was 10/10 as they were very nice .

Daria S.

Yelp
Excellent location just across the street from the Juanita Beach Park. The food is just so so. It's fast food without much TLC. The clam strips are good. The fish is good but the breading is goopy. The fries are soggy. The coleslaw is flavorless -- I think they used really old carrots! All I can recommend is the location.

Michael B.

Yelp
Spuds has been the go to fish & chips hot spot for the greater Seattle area for my entire life. Growing up in Kirkland the location there has been going strong for decades!! It's far and away the best authentic fish&chips I've had ever. Off the bat "it's expensive" is the first comment that comes to mind. But it's all worth it!! I'm a die hard cod & chips man. 3pc is the way to go here. The icing on the cake is the garlic infused malt vinegar!! So good!! I cover both my fish and chips in that stuff!!! So good! The tarter is also very good. Ah but I forget another of my favorite things here. The slaw!! Also quite good. The location is set just across from the iconic Juanita beach! A visit to spuds is a lovely way to spend an afternoon walking the beach enjoying the sights and sounds of people simply enjoying themselves. And don't be fooled. Spuds near the beach. Be it Juanita /Alki or near Greenlake is perfect year round. It's not just for summer folks!! Get in there and enjoy the best fish & chips the PNW has to offer!! Yummi!!

K. M.

Yelp
It's okay. It's fish and chips.....what is dumb is that they charge for their sauces. It's just 55 cents but why not just include it! Talk about nickel and diming. Charge only if the customer wants extra. Would you go to a sushi restaurant where they charge extra for soy sauce and wasabi? Would you buy a pizza and they charge for a packet of chili flakes or parmesan cheese? The sauce is part of the dish! Never went back bc it's a silly business practice.

Darin N.

Yelp
Best fish and chips anywhere! If you are in the Seattle area and want and old school experience with great fish go you won't be disappointed.

Ethan P.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite places with delicious Halibut. The service was rude and terrible. 3 order chicken strips and 1 order of Halibut with 4 drinks $92 The fries were dry and barely any fish all breading. So sad this wonderful community restaurant has gone so far down hill

Laiha C.

Yelp
I just don't love it. Like, I really want to love it... but I don't. The limited menu is quite overpriced IMO and you just don't get what you pay for. Also, your food doesn't come with tartar which is probably my bad because I just assumed it would. Then, my husband picked up my to go order and brought it to me and I then had to eat my fish and fries with NO TARTAR. It was rough. Anyways, I'd just rather go to Ivar's. Sorry, Spuds.

Linda M.

Yelp
The great location across from Juanita Beach Park is what brought us here. We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. We had the fish tacos and the prawns & chips. The fish portion in the tacos was very generous and flavorful, the tortillas were dry but held together. The prawns were good, the chips (fries) were limp. A good enough lunch.

Nydia W.

Yelp
Food was okay but not worth what I spent. I ordered onion rings. My order contained four (4) onion rings. I paid almost $2 a pop for those onion rings. They were okay. Not great. A fountain drink runs $3.50 before tax. Massive rip off. Fountain drinks are HUGE moneymakers for a restaurant. I could almost see that kind of upcharge for bottled soda, but not fountain. For two pieces of cod, onion rings, and three tiny tartar sauce cups I paid just shy of $25 (not including their suggested tip) The guy that took my order (not waited on me) was nice. My order was prepared in a reasonable time. I'm over the massive pressure for tipping. When I order at McDonalds the cashier doesn't flip the screen around and ask me to enter my tip amount. I felt a very distinct pressure to tip well at this slow fast food restaurant. For the prices they charge they can afford to pay the two employees a decent wage.

Troy T.

Yelp
Seriously! $14.30!?! A dried out bun with a thin seriously overcooked piece of fish. No lettuce?! No tomato?! Never again.

Mark D.

Yelp
Note to Cara M: please bring back your previous (long-time) supplier of cod. The one that provided the large, thin, flat pieces of fish. I picked up an order in Juanita last night and received a different product. Thick, overly doughy, tasteless pieces of fish. I honestly thought they gave me chicken by mistake. With this change, you have lost me as a 40 year customer. Cost incl tax for 3 pieces of fish: $22.93. Cost to upgrade from fries to onion rings: $7.26. [Sorry, no upgrade. Must buy as a side.] It's all just too much. So sorry, I must bid you adieu.

M O.

Yelp
This place should be called Scam & Chips. It used to be good and we used to prefer it to Ivars. Spuds used to have much better quality than Ivars and warranted a little higher price. We just came from Spuds Juanita and paid $68.60 for 3 people to eat and they demand a tip through a tip screen on top of it. So, $78.60 total. What we got in return was soggy and translucent undercooked fish and soggy flavorless fries. No tip was warranted as there is no service provided & the substandard product warrants nothing. Demanding tip prior to handing over food for sale is pure extortion. For $78.60, that fish should have been perfectly cooked. I am angry about being scammed out of my money. NEVER again, Spuds-- that is the last time. I hope I can warn others away, as well.

J P.

Yelp
Back again to the Great Northwest after a 4 year gap. Had to get me some Spuds Fish & Chips. Was as great as ever. Family favorite for sure. Even my picky child was stuffed and wanted to come back the next day. Love this place.

Amanda N.

Yelp
Pretty standard fish and chips place. I tried the calamari and chips. Service is pretty quick at the register and it can take a bit for your items to fry up depending on how many others are waiting ahead of you. Salt, vinegar and ketchup is complimentary, but if you want tartar sauce or any of their other special sauces, it is an extra cost. Calamari was pretty tender but the fries/chips were quite bland and not super crispy. I also tried the clam chowder and it was quite watery and bland too.

Jan C.

Yelp
We haven't been here in more than 10 years. Decided to give it a try as Yelp indicates the fish sandwiches are good. Onion Rings were great! Nice breading, perfectly fried, good flavor. Fish sandwich was good. Wish that there were more options like pickles, onions or lettuce, but it was tasty. Only problem was the bun was not that fresh. Fish on the cod fish and chips was a somewhat small piece, but it was tasty. Fries were not that good. They tasted like the oil they had been fried in. Service was very friendly and the food was ready promptly. All-in-all not bad, but there is need for improvement.

Sandy O.

Yelp
It seems that those now holding franchises for Spud fish and chips have been resting on those long past laurels. The Spud of the 50's and 60's has been long gone. Today we tried Juanita and though the person (manager?) swore they were hand batter dipped fish I am quite positive that could not be the case since they looked and tasted like a frozen breaded piece of fish. It was overpriced too! We left after a couple of bites. Fast food in the Seattle area is a shadow of it's former self.

Paul Q.

Yelp
I stopped in at spuds yes today afternoon. To pick up a three-piece halibut and chips two orders of zucchini fries and an order of french fries and a single chocolate shake. Ice cream machine was broken so no chocolate shake. Got my order went home sat down to eat dinner with my son. Opened up the three-piece and it was a single piece of halibut cut in three pieces. My bill was $50 with the tip. I feel very disappointing. Sorry bud you're off the list

Frank B.

Yelp
Spuds Fish n Chips in Juanita is an institution since 1935 and since I was 6 months old. Spuds has raised myself and generations of family's on fish n chips for almost a century on there exquisite cuisine. Like most fish and chips places you have the basics, fish, chips, clams, prawns & chowder. But Spuds has perfected the batter on there fish n chips like no other place. Add some garlic malt vinegar and OMG it's delightful. Keep in mind they mean incredible milk shakes including a Piña Colada shake. Spuds fries are my favorite golden crispy fries which are the best in West Seattle. I'd recommend ordering the fish meal or just get "THE SPECIAL" which is 3 pieces of golden fried fish, fries , tarter sauce & Coke all for one price. Depending on he season you can eat there or head down the street to the Lake Washington and eat at the Beach or dine in.

Emily J.

Yelp
I have been here several times and the food is pretty consistent each time. I decided to order uber eats from here yesterday and it really surprised me when I tasted the clam chowder. This time, it tasted different than the other times before. I got more of a potato chowder taste from it. It was thick and starchy. It was comparable to those store bought clam chowders than come in a package and you cut them open and pour into a pan to heat up. I was definitely left disappointed. I also ordered my usual, the halibut and chips. This is on the pricey side but it is halibut and not cod. This has always been cooked consistently with the same breading and same taste. I can at least count on this to come out the same each time I order it. For the "chips" (aka fries), they often come out soft and sometimes almost soggy.. I like squishy fries so I do not mind. If you only like crispy fries, I would not recommend ordering them here. This is a family friendly establishment. There are only a few parking spaces, so expect it to be busy in the summer. Eating inside or out is nice on those sunny days. You can even wander over to Juanita beach if you want to go eat over there. I think this is a nice fish and chips place if you do not have high expectations.

Kayla W.

Yelp
Went last Saturday and it was our first time going to this location. Honestly, the one on Alki was better, but this was close! We would definitely go back should we find ourselves in that neck of the woods again! We had the cod fish & chips, ( the fries were perfect!!! I wish I could've eaten all of them!) the fish was good and flavorful. A side of prawns- not my favorite, but perfectly cooked. Finally, a side of clam strips that were ok, not the best I've had. Overall, we were full and happy with our meal overall.

Noah B.

Yelp
Over priced food and not that good. Try "nosh" food truck or the cod at wild Rover. *Cod and chips 2.5/5 *onion rings 3/5 *fried green beans 2.5/5 -cod and chips were not great, very greasy. Really nothing worth trying -onion rings were expensive and average. -fried green beans were fried a little too dark and with too thick of a batter.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Hours are supposed to be until 9pm. Drove there and closed! Change your hours so people don't Waste their time!

Tracy R.

Yelp
We were quite disappointed. We have often eaten at their other locations and enjoyed the food. This was not good. The clam strips tasted like they were fried in old oil. The chowder was milk and flour; no clams, not even any taters. The fries were passable.

Shipra B.

Yelp
The good thing about this place is the location. Conveniently located by the Juanita beach park, it will satisfy your food cravings if you're looking for a quick grab n go and enjoy your meal at the park. Food is okay if not great. Milkshake and fish and chips were quite decent.

Alice L.

Yelp
Fish and chips! I got the two piece and the cod was good, but the fries were a bit dry and soggy - maybe it was just the particular day.

Tim L.

Yelp
We came here after walking along Juanita Beach. We loved the nostalgic feel of the restaurant and we were very excited to come in and get some ice cream. Unfortunately they only sell ice cream in tubs, but they do make the best banana milkshake that I have had in years. I am really looking forward to going back to try their shrimp and/or fish and chips! If you like banana milkshakes, run to this place and try one today!

Steve H.

Yelp
I visited Spud for the LAST TIME yesterday. Ordered three cod only (no fries). Three cod WITH fries was $21 and change. They charged me $26 and change. I asked the people at the counter how this could be and they said that was the price. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to argue. Never again. I'll make the trip up to Canyon Park for Ivars.

Brandon P.

Yelp
I came here just as places were reopening for dine-in, so I got to eat inside a restaurant for the first time in months. That was nice. The fish 'n' chips were fine, emphasis on chips, which were good. The cod filets were thinner, longer and wider than I'm used to. Possibly on account of the thinness, they were dried out at the edges. Otherwise the fish was fine. I echo the sentiment that it's bizarre to charge for tartar sauce at a place like this, but I know the costs are high compared with, say, Taco Bell. They forgot to give me tartar sauce initially, so I had to ask them whether I had ordered any, and they did check to see that I had. No biggie, but I guess I would have preferred to have been spotted the tartar sauce on account of the confusion. It doesn't cost them much. I wish I remembered the important things in life, but instead I remember stuff like that. The sides were *weak*. Other fish 'n' chips places I frequent had me thinking there was no such thing as bad clam chowder. The stuff here was thin and milky with a few clams in but little else. The potatoes tasted exactly like the ones from canned corned beef hash. The slaw was bland and had sat for too long. I might try another location.

Craig F.

Yelp
I have been coming to Spuds for more years than I care to talk about. My most recent visit was extremely disappointing. The Cod and Chips were extremely expensive for the food that we got. My daughter and I got (2) 3 piece cod and chips, (2) drinks and (2) large tartar sauces and we were at $50. The pieces of fish were good sized but the fish was very dry and the batter had a bitter flavor. The fries were good as usual but overall it was not a good experience. I can see a family of four coming here for quick lunch and laying down $100 at a fish and chips place, that would be pretty surprising. It is probably not a place that I will be frequenting very often when I can spend that type of money for a better dining experience.

Dipti H.

Yelp
Freshest fish and clean flavors (when compared to other similar/popular seafood restaurants on the east side). Would have loved a bigger portion of fries considering the pricing. Everything was good and if the place was closer I'd visit more often!

Jameson Z.

Yelp
The food was terrible and super overpriced. We ordered the cod and halibut and onions rings. The fish tasted like any frozen fish filets you could get a supermarket. The cod with the tartar sauce tasted like McDonald's filet-o fish except it's way more expensive. If you're going to eat here might as well go to McDonald's or Trader Joe's.

Tess S.

Yelp
We have been going here for years! It's always fresh and good size portions. The only negative is the tarter sauce now. It used to be made on-site and tasted better. It's not bad now, just not as good as it was.

Monica M.

Yelp
I had never been to Spuds in Juanita. I go to Alki location all the time. Had cod fish and chips. They are just as good. Tried buffalo shrimp for first time. It was ok but expensive for small portion and fries not includede. I would not recommend these. This location is small but good view of sunset and the water. Friendly staff. Has small out door sitting area but near busy road. I'll definitely come back for the fish. So much easier then traffic and parking on Alki

Jaxon H.

Yelp
Honestly pretty heartbreaking experience I had at spuds, I'm a pretty easy to please guy and not too picky but I took my work crew there after a long day of work expecting an aesthetic fish n chip diner with decent prices but instead I see a very basic menu with very high prices. We decide to entertain spuds pricing and try some food and even asked for a recommendation from the cashier and a patron. The onion rings were 8$ for 4 rings, a 3 piece cod is 23$, and honestly the rockfish is better..! Save yourself time and money and go to Ivars

Natalie R.

Yelp
Found a fly inside my clam chowder . Forgot to take a picture because I was so grossed out . Fly wasn't on the top , stirred my chowder and it came floating up .... Took the chowder back in for a refund and the lady working made a joke about the chowder just having "extra protein" , like no lady that's nasty. Got a refund and the lady continued to joke about how she has no idea , possibly because it's warm outside ...

Alex B.

Yelp
As someone who grew up eating Spuds on Alki Beach (best fish n chips ever) I had high expectations for the juanita location. This place shouldn't even be branded the same thing. $20 for 1 small piece of Halibut (cheeks), fries were different than Alki's, and malt vinegar didn't even malt. As a new Juanita resident, I will be actively avoiding this place.

Leo B.

Yelp
Good good, hella pricey. The food you get is quality and so is the service, however the fish prices are absolutely bonkers. The taste carries the entire 5 stars. The tartar definitely helps too though. I got the 3 piece rockfish with the fries and I would definitely try it again, when I have the funds.
