Best New Bars Around Boston, According to Eater Editors | Eater Boston

"Listening bars are taking over Boston, and we’re welcoming the takeover. There are three new cocktail bars on this list alone that are in that genre: Temple Records in Downtown Crossing, Trillium’s new Headroom Hi-Fi Lounge, and, as of October, Spy Bar in the South End. You’ll find classic drinks here, as well as a handful of remixed classics, but the highlight of this new cocktail bar and listening lounge is the space on the menu that general manager Marco Anaya has reserved to play around. In a recent menu, that means desserts in drink form, from a Mango Lassi with rum, mango, saffron, and other spices, to a whiskey-soaked Peach Cobbler." - Erika Adams

Spy Bar Sneaks into the South End on October 2 | Eater Boston

"A dim, hi‑fi music listening lounge tucked in the lower level of the Revolution Hotel that blends carefully curated, not‑loud DJ and live sets in an acoustically treated room with elevated small plates and an inventive cocktail program from Wildlife Hospitality and GM/bartender Marco Anaya. The 150‑person space (about 80 seats plus a 12‑seat bar) offers small‑plate fare meant for sharing or a full meal, including bluefin tuna tartare, crispy masa tempura artichokes, duck confit pastilla, chickpeas tossed in smoked Turkish pepper, and barbecue pork ribs accented with crunchy corn kernels; on the sweet side there’s a playful chocolate Fluff dip served with fresh fruit. The cocktail list is divided into vintage “freezer door classics” (extra‑cold Manhattans and martinis), highly effervescent “Pop” highballs carbonated on a Suntory Highball Wonder, riffed Remixes like the Sticky Fingers paloma (Olmeca Altos tequila with Xicaru mezcal, mandarin, tarragon, coconut) and the I’m Working Late espresso martini (coffee‑washed Reyka, mace syrup, manzanilla sherry, tonka bean), and labor‑intensive Fresh Cuts such as a Baklava cocktail that uses phyllo infusions and a house pistachio milk with a touch of feta brine, plus a PB&B made with centrifuged banana “water.” Seasonal ingredients drive the menu, with the Remixes and Fresh Cuts rotated several times a year and weekly specials, making the spot suitable for a pre‑dinner stop before dining elsewhere in the hotel or for a full evening of music, drinks, and small plates." - Nathan Tavares

Dropped by Spybar for some after-dinner drinks and loved the overall vibe. My partner really enjoyed the Lime Wire, and I went for the honey-based cocktail — fantastic! The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed night out, with soothing music at just the right volume so you can chat comfortably. The drinks were tasty, though I wish the garnishes had a bit more flair, especially compared to a place we visited earlier (the one above, which is also has the same owner). Prices are on the higher side (about $22 per drink after taxes and tips), but for the cozy setting and mellow energy, it’s worth it for a special evening.

Spy Bar is such a hidden gem! It’s located right near Cosmica, and once you step inside, it really gives off a cool speakeasy vibe; with its chill lighting, great atmosphere, and an inviting energy. I went on a Friday night, and they had a live DJ playing smooth, laid-back tracks that set the mood perfectly. The music added to the fun without being overpowering, so it was easy to talk and hang out with friends. The bartenders know their craft. The drinks were top-notch-, and the staff as a whole was super friendly and welcoming. And the tacos? Amazing. They’ve got a variety to choose from, and each one I tried was flavorful, fresh, and way better than your average bar taco. Between the vibe, the drinks, and the food, this place is definitely worth checking out. Will definitely be coming back!

Google
Came here for drinks and dessert. The food was okay and the drinks were unique. It gives off a 70s vibe with a disco ball, dim lighting and a great dj spinning some classics. Will come again, for only drinks and the vibe.

Absolutely love this place from the moment we walked in. The atmosphere, the music, the service. You feel like you just walked into a “disco” or a “club” in the late 70s or early 80s. Good variety of drinks! I love the vintage style!!!! And the service is great!! Morgan was amazing!!

Google
Absolutely love this place! It's really quite an experience to walk into a place that has been thoughtfully created around the acoustics. We got there early before it was too busy so we could really hear the clarity of the quality speakers, appreciate all the sound dampening, and the vibe was super cool. The food was clean and fresh. The clarified drinks were the perfect pairing with the clarity of sound in the space. And the curated playlist was "a thing". All songs I've never heard but kept wanting to know who the artist is because it's so good. Definitely recommend.

Google
Spy bar is for the vibes! This place has been thoughtfully designed and the music wasn’t crazy loud even though it’s a listening bar. I love that more of such concepts in the restaurant space are popping up in Boston. Loved the drinks but wasn’t sold so much on the guacamole. The whipped feta was great but felt minuscule in terms of portion size. I felt that the price point was a little too steep but maybe that’s just me.

We were told it’s Day 3 for Spy Bar. Lovely addition to South End area.We love the atmosphere. Great place for cocktails and some small bites (limited choices). Will be a good place for first dates to have a few cocktails and chat. However, if you are hungry, go to Cosmica to have some tacos first!!

Spy Bar is very cool and laid back. The staff are wonderful and go out of their way to make your time there memorable. You’re getting great cocktails, good food, and listening to a whole album. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday night with a friend and it was empty. The service was friendly but that was really the only bright spot. My friend and I were both very disappointed with our drinks. I ordered the Pink Panther and quite frankly it tasted like gasoline. The food menu is limited, the guacamole we ordered was bland and we were unable to finish it. There was disco music playing at a reasonable volume but we were left wondering why it is called Spy Bar.

Yelp
This is a nice spot to listen to great music while enjoying creative drinks. As far as I know, you need a reservation to get in and it's very busy on the weekends. I tried their popular baklava cocktail- it was decently strong, and delicious but didn't taste like baklava. You can get cheaper drinks elsewhere but i think this place is worth checking out for the vibes and unique drinks!

Yelp
Spy Bar is a must for the craft cocktails, date night ambiance, and yummy thoughtfully crafted bites. My friends and I went for a drink after dinner Friday Night. I really recommend a reservation as it is newer and very busy. Our waitress was an angel. I am also N/A and they had two very cool options for me to enjoy!

Yelp
This is a great place for a first date, as the music is low enough to have a conversation. The service is great as the server is constantly checking in and making sure you're drink is never empty. Highly reccomend ordering the Pink Panther if you like fruity cocktails. I wasnt a fan of the musix. Overall, good *first* date night place to grab drinks and then go somewhere more lively.

Yelp
Neither of us were a huge fan of our drinks. The menu was limited and we just had olives to snack on which was fine. The general vibe was nice and music was cool but I expected it to be a vinyl bar with a turntable and instead it was just a regular bar with no turntable and no DJ, just regular music from big speakers. Overall I honestly don't get what makes it a "HiFi listening" bar rather than than just a regular bar. As an alternative I recommend Back Bar in Somerville which has some of the best cocktails in town.

Yelp
New "speakeasy" alert! You know the rules: if it has a sign on the street showing you where it is, it ain't a full-fledged speakeasy. But it is a business and folks need to know where to find it, so ultimately no harm, no foul. Bonus points for having a completely different vibe from the taqueria and hotel that are its current neighbors. I knew there would be a great sound system, but did not expect the perfectly lit disco ball which cascades across the room and gives this spot the vibe of the basement of your richest friend in high school who lets the kids hang out as much as they'd like. You're either on high tops, low tops, these beautiful, wavy couches, or the bar but the music is the real star of the show with futuristic, high-end speaker towers surrounding the sitting area. The people in charge of music keep the volume high enough so you can hear everything and feel the music, but not too loud to where you're shouting. Something tells me that once they do let loose, it'll be a thumping and a bumping in there! The DJ was very eclectic with familiar soul hits, jazz, funk, Afrobeat (the 70s OG version), hip hop, and R&B. Some tracks were popular and others were deep cuts and that's just how it should be. Food came out fast so don't make the mistake I did of ordering too many plates at once cause you won't have space for all that, your eaters, and your drinks. Go one at a time. The Duck Confit dish (which reminded me of toaster's strudels) and the Brisket were my favs, but there's a lot of veggie options also. These are small plates/bites so don't expect this to be dinner as much as noshes to fuel your convo, drinking, and dancing. The drinks are well thought out and balanced. I actually couldn't see what was on the backbar to judge their full selection, so more to come there. All in all, welcome to the city Spy Bar!

Yelp
cocktails were amazing, truly 10/10. Staff was friendly and our server was great. Service was a little slow for drinks but the place was packed. definitely a cool vibe and we'll be back soon

Yelp
We recently visited Spy Bar and we had a great time. Its a high end listening room with high level audio equipment that makes it stand out from any other places. In combination with excellent music played there - this place is a Boston new gem that is sophisticated and classy. Hope it will stay like that.
