New "speakeasy" alert! You know the rules: if it has a sign on the street showing you where it is, it ain't a full-fledged speakeasy. But it is a business and folks need to know where to find it, so ultimately no harm, no foul. Bonus points for having a completely different vibe from the taqueria and hotel that are its current neighbors. I knew there would be a great sound system, but did not expect the perfectly lit disco ball which cascades across the room and gives this spot the vibe of the basement of your richest friend in high school who lets the kids hang out as much as they'd like. You're either on high tops, low tops, these beautiful, wavy couches, or the bar but the music is the real star of the show with futuristic, high-end speaker towers surrounding the sitting area. The people in charge of music keep the volume high enough so you can hear everything and feel the music, but not too loud to where you're shouting. Something tells me that once they do let loose, it'll be a thumping and a bumping in there! The DJ was very eclectic with familiar soul hits, jazz, funk, Afrobeat (the 70s OG version), hip hop, and R&B. Some tracks were popular and others were deep cuts and that's just how it should be. Food came out fast so don't make the mistake I did of ordering too many plates at once cause you won't have space for all that, your eaters, and your drinks. Go one at a time. The Duck Confit dish (which reminded me of toaster's strudels) and the Brisket were my favs, but there's a lot of veggie options also. These are small plates/bites so don't expect this to be dinner as much as noshes to fuel your convo, drinking, and dancing. The drinks are well thought out and balanced. I actually couldn't see what was on the backbar to judge their full selection, so more to come there. All in all, welcome to the city Spy Bar!
