On the Grid : Spyhouse Coffee

"A blend of rustic and elegance, this spot is perfect if you're looking for a place to stay a while and sip the afternoon away while looking at antiques scattered all over the walls." - Windmill Design

"Whether reclaimed barn wood from Amish families in Wisconsin, antique accents from the owner's 20-year old collection, or the farmers behind the single-origin coffee beans themselves, there is a story behind everything at Spyhouse Coffee. Their attention to design detail complements their curation of beans from around the world, and ensures their new foray into on-site roasting will be top notch. The best part? The atmosphere is welcoming to those on the move as well as those looking to stay the day. More unusual, if you want a fusion of flavor, you won’t get a judgmental glare for ordering favorites like the Spygirl (a honey-lavendar latte) or Mata Hari (a cinnamon-honey-almond latte)."

We stopped here for a coffee when we got a breakfast sandwich from the place next door. My wife and I both really loved our coffees. She had a regular dark roast, but I had the honey lavender coffee drink with half the sweetness, and it was perfect. We both commented that is it was closer to us, we would go more often. It seems like a nice space for working, if you are able.

Google
My go-to coffee shop for years! It’s a great spot to grab coffee, work, or hang out. When I’m craving a flavorful latte, this is my place. I usually go for the Spy Girl, but lately, I’ve been enjoying the seasonal Holi-Date Latte. They’ve also got some tasty pastries! The seating isn’t the most comfortable, but the vibe and excellent coffee make up for it. One tip: charge your laptop or phone before heading over since outlets are limited in the main area, but there are plenty by the bar!

I went to Spyhouse to try out a different place. I ordered a cappuccino with almond milk. Everything seemed to be good and all until I took a couple of sips and noticed that it was made with whole milk and tasted burnt. I'm lactose intolerant, and this did not sit well with me. If you want to pay $6.80 for coffee from subpar baristas who don't put effort into expensive drinks, then come here. The only thing good about this place is the environment

Google
I live in the area and have stopped by many times to grab coffee/tea to go. I finally stopped one day to sit down and do some reading. The atmosphere was very relaxing despite it being very busy in there. Love the plants and laid back but cozy decor. They have some of the best matcha lattes. Coffee isn’t bad either.

Google
It's such a cute place! I had the blueberry muffin, and it was delicious. I highly recommend it! Someone else in my group got the seasonal lemon drop latte. I was skeptical but it was amazing 👏 🤩

My favorite coffee place in the twin cities so far. Excellent service and delicious latte. Highly recommend the Carmella hot or iced. Bought their fresh roasted whole beans as well

Google
Our whole family enjoyed relaxing at Spyhouse. My wife and I both enjoyed a Blackberry Ginger Beer Spritzer beverage that was so good that I went and got another one before leaving. The whole family had plenty of room to enjoy our food, drink and company. The baristas were very personable and friendly. Overall, it was a great experience!

This Sunday morning, I ordered two coffees and I planned to pay with cash since I didn’t have my card on me, but when I got to the register and ordered, they told me they didn’t take cash. I fumbled a little bit because I felt insanely awkward, and I was ready to just go without any coffee, but one of the guys working saw me and went ‘it’s alright, there are no signs, I’ll cover it.’ I wasn’t expecting him to say anything or do anything, but his kindness really made my day. The coffee was top tier and the atmosphere was made immensely better because of the workers there.

Yelp
Came here for a blind date, left in love... not with her, just some good matcha. Highly recommend :)

Yelp
First I would like to say that their coffee is probably the best in the city..been to many many coffee shops in the TCs and they just out perform based on taste and presentation. They have a wide assortment of delicious pastries from local bakeries and Patisseries which is a big plus. However last few times visiting there, I feel they are not as friend or inviting..I came in and it took exactly 6 mins or longer just for them even to acknowledge I was standing there..I understand being busy which is why I am not pushy but you should at least acknowledge the customer so they know you see them..this has happened last 2 times I have visited. Also prepare to spend about $7+ (with tip). on a smaller latte...Its about the going rate nowadays for good quality coffee. Would like to give the other locations a shot but they gotta work on the customer service thing.

Yelp
I've always had a special feeling about Spyhouse. Maybe it just comes down to their cool and kind of rustic feeling interior ambiance, or it might just be their Carmella Latté. I've never had a bad experience with their staff, and they've also got pretty decent WiFi, so it can be a great place to sit and get some work done. I would definitely recommend checking out this spot, or any of their other locations!
google avatar

Yelp
Their winter seasonal drinks are amazing! I've tried the sage against the machine and apple pie chai, both iced and both delicious. Sage against the machine was a caramel and sage infused pecan syrup. Apple pie chai tasted exactly like an apple pie with the delicious chai aftertaste mixed in. I prefer both to be iced over their hot version. I think the flavors work better when iced. This location specifically is huge with so much seating available. And there's a parking lot behind which makes it super convenient. I love spyhouse and all their locations are great, but this one is always my go to.

Yelp
I really enjoy this coffee shop. The music is chill, it's not too loud, makes for a great place to catch up with friends, and there is an abundance of places to do work. The high ceilings and mostly wood interior give it an open but cozy feel. The coffee and pastries are also great, and the staff has always been friendly. A solid space.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the coffee at spy house. My go to is their lattes ($7, 12oz). All y heir drinks are a little pricey. I love studying there - the vibes are great! Most people are often studying or in meetings. Customer service is great and always quick. It can get busy during the day on weekdays, but people often come and go. Overall rating: 10/10

Yelp
Love the ambiance and all the plants. Lots of sunshine from the large windows and a big space with lots of seating, outdoor tables as well. Great coffee, I really enjoyed my coffee date with my college daughter. The honey lavender oatmilk latte was really good but I could not taste the lavender only the honey. That would not stop me from ordering again.

Yelp
Used to go to the North Loop location all the time but after the owner fighting the unionization efforts of employees I hadn't been in years. Their roasts are solid and their mix drinks are always pretty good. They changed their pastry supplier from Vikings & Goddesses to Patisserie 46 at some point since my last visit. It's a very hip location and atmosphere where you'll see more Apple devices than ironic mustaches but everyone is very nice, helpful, and willing to answer any questions you have.
google avatar

Yelp
Spyhouse is super cute and quaint with a pretty significant menu. There was tons of space on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't super loud, which would be good for people trying to work or study. There looked to be great tables that would support small and large groups along with a rotating menu of seasonal drinks for everyone to try. However, the drinks were a bit one-note. The espresso tasted a bit burnt which overtook the flavor of our drinks. Considering that each batch is different, I will definitely be back to get another drink or two there as I'll bet we just got a particularly strong drink, which is fine. Definitely grab a doughnut - or two, those are incredible.

Yelp
My plan was to come here and work for 4+ hours. I felt lucky cause I found the last remaining spot (unfortunately without an outlet to charge my laptop). The internet was not working. I tried to get it going for 20 minutes. I asked the barista for a paper cup to pour my coffee into. He said the internet doesn't work sometimes. I left to go elsewhere.

Yelp
Chill environment, good music, comfy spot for chatting, studying, hanging out with friends. Good coffee, tea and drinks. Not the easiest place to find parking hence the four stars. Staffs are friendly, price are reasonable.
google avatar

Yelp
Set in a renovated warehouse, the natural light pouring in and the dark wood tables and counters make the Spyhouse on Broadway the perfect environment to work or study in. They always have good tunes playing, the service is fast and friendly, and the drinks are complex and delicious. My go-to drink is the Solid Gold (turmeric, ginger, and oat milk, sweetened with maple syrup-- yum.), which never misses.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried some cold brew and their new cherry lavender oat milk latte. Delish! Excited to stop by their flagship location. I've only been to the one on eat street. Lots of people working on laptops inside the beautiful wood and brick building. Cute little patio and wide open windows on beautiful summer days! I definitely suggest you try the cherry lavender oat milk latte. The fruit and floral flavors are just right. Please tell everyone about the fruit & floral flavors to see if you can repeat that little tongue twister. I really liked the vibe of this location and enjoyed the new floral bouquet shoppe in the corner!

Yelp
Great coffee, chill vibes, and beautiful decor. Love this place and the staff is awesome!

Yelp
Locals are lucky to have this gem in their neighborhood. Come for coffee and admire the architecture of old Minneapolis. The soaring ceilings and natural light filtering give this coffee house an ambience that can't be beat. I was only looking for good coffee but wished I had time to just sit and relax. Grabbed a pastrami and cheese croissant made by Vikings and Goddesses, flaky and fresh, wish it could have been heated. Lots of pastry options made by them. Kicking myself for not grabbing the rhubarb and fennel pastry or the everything croissant! If you drive here, the map function directs you to the back parking lot. You see a core power yoga and could be confused. There is no signage that you are in the right place and since it was my first time I ventured onward. The coffeehouse is above 612 Brew and if you take the back entrance you will be treated to more architecture and some great artwork as you climb the steps to the back entrance. Or as many were doing, you can park out front on broadway and run in, though it isn't officially parking and probably fine but on a weekend day. Enjoyed the coffee. Will be back with my daughters to sit and try out the great menu.

Yelp
I came here after my chiropractor appointment. It's very open and light with the set up. There's lot of seating area! The service was quick with getting my coffee. I got a iced caramel latte and it was delicious! Overall will have to come here for future coffee dates or get togethers!

Yelp
I do love me a good spy girl latte!! This place is one of the highest quality coffee shops you'll find in the twin cities and they have locations all around, each is unique and has an old/modern feel. My recent visit had me uncharacteristically waiting for 20 minutes to get my drink, but in general it's pretty fast counter service.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy ambiance! Great place to get Tea and get some work done. It's definitely a great cafe to visit.

Yelp
Croissant like 2 month old rusk. 10 oz coffee $7 with a syrup that doesn't reduce sour taste of coffee

Yelp
I wanted some morning iced coffee as usual. My husband and I came here on a whim. I ordered a Iced Caramella (vanilla + caramel) latte, and my husband got a Iced black tea. It was a special weekend and included mochi donuts. We got tarp, and strawberry mochi donuts. From the display glass we also got a blueberry muffin. We enjoyed all of our choices! I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee since it wasn't watered down and tasted perfect! Everyone was super friendly and the service was quick! The area had a nice relaxing ambiance to it! Even had outside seating.

Katie A.

Yelp
Great coffee and service, the baristas were very helpful and good at making drinks. just wish there were more outlets for laptops!

Yelp
What a lovely setting! This is my dream home! Amazing, from the wooden interior design to the plants! On a Saturday morning, I stopped here for coffee with a friend, and the place was packed. It was difficult to find a seat, but we did find one at the far end of the bar. There is also plenty of parking in the surrounding area. The coffee was fantastic!
google avatar

Amintha R.

Yelp
My only issue is the wifi while free is terrible, it's not functional do for even basics of online work
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times, I tried their chai tea latte and blueberry muffin it's very good. The workers are very helpful when it comes to recommending drinks or what's more popular. The place was clean but the stools to sit on are kinda uncomfortable. I would definitely recommend the almond croissant it's very delicious and soft.
google avatar

Shane B.

Yelp
Spyhouse feels like my house when I walk in and the atmosphere of a cozy, friendly log cabin deep in the forest welcomes me in from the bust streets that got me there. I order my tasty beverage and take in the aroma of a carefully cared for bean. By the time I have keened in on the perfect nook that becons my arrival, a smoldering shot of espresso and cup of joe is waiting to accompany me to our spot.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
I love the coffee, the atmosphere, and the aesthetic. I'm not the only one. The place is full every time I'm here. I wish the seating was modified, fixed tables give groups of 2 no option but option but to take 4 tables. Moveable tables or maybe more seating would be a nice change. I definitely recommend the solid gold specialty latte and just tried the orange dreamsicle seasonal latte and that was fantastic as well.
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Spyhouse has great coffee but this location is not ideal if you need reliable wifi the inside is pretty though and has outlets if you're sitting by the wall or at the big middle table. The staff are also not the friendliest but if you know what you like already and just need the caffeine this place is still good!
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Coffee. Full stop. That's all I need/have to say, other than the fun/artsy vibe (that I really think is genuine). Here for a flower arranging mini class-but best of all COFFEE

Yelp
I love drinking coffee after I've been... well... drinking! I made an attempt to come here late night on a Friday after bar hopping Northeast, but it was so packed when I looked in the window I didn't even step in. I was not to be deterred, so on another drunken Saturday night, I was able to pop in with a girlfriend. I ordered the Spygirl and she ordered something caramel-y... if I remember much of that night. They were both so creamy and delicious, it's no wonder these coffee shops are popping up everywhere. Sweet for certain, but not overly so. My friend said "great... now I'm going to have to drive here everyday". Lots of picturesque places to plop, drink, and snap a pic. Bonus! It's connected to a building that has a brewery, so you don't need to walk far or in the cold to your next stop. Free lot parking and street parking. Wouldn't recommend parking on Broadway in front of it. As someone that works off of Broadway, I pass this place on my route and see people get side swiped all the time.
google avatar

Miguel Q.

Yelp
If you need to study, don't come here. Of all the coffee spot options in the area, this Spyhouse ranks the worst. Seating is uncomfortable. Im trying to love the industrial chic, but the uneven and asymmetrical seating hurts my bottom. Not ideal for long periods of studying. Don't come expecting to charge your computer. Outlets are hard to come by, and are frustratingly and unevenly dispersed across the seating areas. And in the event that you DO find an outlet, there's a 60% chance it doesn't actually work. Not ideal for studying. Do yourself a favor and don't come. The fact that this place remains such a staple for coffee drinkers and study spot connoisseurs is beyond my comprehension, especially when better alternatives exist in the area.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Great coffee, great location, and great bakery First it's always about the coffee. And they do an excellent job. Both the espresso and brewed is excellent and flavorful, just like the best coffee should be. Many places should not roast coffee because they do not do it well, but Spyhouse does it right The building is gorgeous. You cannot park in front, so be sure to park on Tyler (it is Tyler, isn't it?). The inside is huge, with dark wood, metal, and good wifi. And for the piece de resistance, they open at 6 am. Hooray for someone that opens when they should, unlike Diamond and Doghouse And the bakery is devine because they source it from two impeccable bakeries, including Mojo donuts.

Yelp
Had to work in NE Minneapolis and had an HR meeting with one of my teammates. I had been wanting to try Spyhouse for some time and man was it a great experience. The building is such a cool layout with Spyhouse being one of the larger tenants on the corner. Upon entry you are greeted with an assortment of products that make you want to take them all home. You see an assortment of craft pastries and smell and hear the machines as work as you decide what your beverage choice will be. Our crew chose a standard drip with an El Salvador bean as the days offering. I wanted to try a pour over of one of their other beans and chose to wait and see them hand brew a Honduran selection. Both coffees were amazing and would lead me to spend a lot of my work and free time here. I saw many people with craft hot and cold drinks and a lot of the clientele looked to be student or millennials trying to look busy. Spyhouse is one of the best roasters in the Twin Cities and made a believer out of a guy that swears by Stumptown, Intellegentiista and Dogwood! Well done Spyhouse!
google avatar

Robyn L.

Yelp
Spyhouse is the coffee staple if you're in the cities. My favorite is the Solid Gold (turmeric ginger latte) and I like the Carmella too. Very cool Hipster aesthetic in there. Lots of plants, good seating. Pricey- but that's to be expected with cool coffee shops. Shout of to the barista Claire (or Clare) that was working this Sat am morning. So friendly and approachable! Great service too!
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
Went here one evening just to chill out and maybe get some studying done. I just ordered a hot tea for $3.95 which is quite pricey for some very bland tea. The only thing I like about this place is the atmosphere it is open and spacious.
google avatar

Yvonne M.

Yelp
Excellent coffee!! On a busy day parking might be tough. The day I was here it wasn't too busy so no problem parking. The coffee drinks are excellent. The pastries are super yummy. The staff are careful with COVID protocols. Check in required if your are staying onsite with your beverage. Super clean. No complaints at all. REALLY GOOD COFFEE
google avatar

Connie D.

Yelp
Stopped by here for little pick me up before heading into work this morning! They've got a nice social distancing system down with stickers on the floor for where to enter, order, stand/wait, and exit. Service was friendly and since there was only one other customer waiting, I got my coffee fairly quick! I ordered the Spy Girl. It's a lavender honey latte, the flavor is quite subtle, but you can taste both the honey and lavender. The menu was a little hard to find/ out of view. It's on a large wooden board on the left when you walk in. There are some plants covering it so it can be hard to see some items. I wish the menu was in a better location like above the coffee bar/ordering station like it is at most coffee shops. Nevertheless, my coffee tasted great. I love their space, especially the cute little chandelier above the coffee bar!
google avatar

Priya Z.

Yelp
I have driven past this location more than a few times, and it was about time I checked it out. The inside was spacious and had a lot of seating. I am not a coffee drinker, and I know that is my own problem. However the lack of hot chocolate options, was off putting. They had 1. It was a dark chocolate 'hot chocolate'. I'm not a fan of dark chocolate, but got it, since I was interested in tea(if they had any, I didn't even think to ask what other non-coffee options they had.) I was there for a date, and was able to find a spot to sit right away, however with a typical coffee shop, there was music playing, and it was at times hard to hear the other person. I'm not blaming it soley on the overhead music, because we were wearing masks as well when we weren't drinking out hot chocolate. It was an overall great place, but for me personally, I wouldn't come back here for a date, or even for hot chocolate. I'd rather go somewhere else. I'd give this place a 3, because it wasn't bad, it just wasn't great.
google avatar

Amelia J.

Yelp
Came here for a coffee date on a Sunday afternoon around 3:30 and the place was packed as usual. This is definitely a popular spot for students working on their homework, so don't expect a large amount of seat turnover while you're here. I had the vanilla latte, which ended up being $6+. This is a little pricey in my opinion for a standard vanilla latte. I didn't think there was anything special about it. My friend had the chai, which she said was good but nothing special. Wait time for my drink was around 5 minutes. The music here is pretty loud, which makes it a bit harder to hear your conversation. I would say this location is a good study place, but not necessarily a great place for a catch-up. Another negative from my visit was that the sun was also going down as it was the late afternoon and the windows did not have blinds drawn, making it difficult to find a seat that didn't have you looking directly into the sun. I would possibly come back to get some work done, but otherwise not making a special trip here.

Yelp
Loved it! My friends and I came to work & get coffee...that's just the perfect combination. It's a little scarce with the outputs (mostly at the bar or the booths). However, the caramella made up for anything else. Wi-fi is strong, there was quite a number of people around so there's a low hum of background noise. TL:DR I'd definitely recommend.
google avatar

Paige O.

Yelp
I love Spyhouse. The coffee here is so good and the atmosphere is nice. It is apart of a building complex with a bunch of other businesses right off of Broadway and Central. When I come, I always get a Carmella. It is smooth and tastes awesome. The Spygirl is also super good too. Can't go wrong with the teas either. I enjoy getting their iced teas in the summertime after a yoga class at Core power next door. Most of the time the place will be very full. But if you can find a spot, the environment is great. The wifi isn't always the best, but it is free and better than going to a chain coffee place. There is some street parking in the front, but there is a larger parking lot in the back of the building complex. On a busy day it can be hard to find parking too.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
This is such a cute spot with amazing vibes! I loved the design/interior of this coffee shop. It made me felt very homey and cozy. I got the vanilla latte with almond milk, it was alright, I would've preferred it just a bit more sweeter. The place was extremely packed when I went, I guess because it was cold and everyone is looking for some good coffee! I wish I would've taken more pictures of the interior but I didn't want to seem like a creep since there were people everywhere! So I hope you enjoy these candids of me ! Definitely a great place to work outside of your office or home!

Yelp
The food service and atmosphere are all great ! There is a lot of seating but it fills up quickly so I recommend getting here early.

Yelp
I had seen people posting pictures of their coffee from Spyhouse before, and had always wanted to go, but just never found the time to. I graduated from the U, moved away from Minnesota, and came back to visit for Thanksgiving. And that's when I visited Spyhouse. First of all, whaaat?! Spyhouse was open on Thanksgiving?! I was so thankful (ha ha no pun intended) that it was open because my friend and I had decided to meet that morning and we could not figure out what to do. We ended up at Spyhouse! As soon as I walked in, I fell in love with the place. It had an atmosphere that was good for studying, catching up with friends, a first date, etc. The music was just loud enough to enjoy if you're alone, but not so loud that you can't talk over it or tune it out. The perfect volume (especially if you're getting coffee with someone you're not close to and are afraid of awkward silences)! I wish I spent more time studying here when I was still at the U. I got the Spygirl, which had hints of lavender, and I loved it. I always think I'm going to like drinks with lavender in them, but then am slightly disappointed with how merely okay they are. But the Spygirl? 10/10 would recommend. Conclusion: this is now one of my favourite coffee shops, and it's too bad that I won't have many chances to revisit since I moved away. It's definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
This is the second Spyhouse location that I have visited, and I now love the company even more than I did before. I went here for a professional networking meeting, and it turned out to be a great choice. The space is absolutely gorgeous: it's a historical building, and the coffee shop itself has the most wonderful warm and comfortable mood because of its beautiful wood-filled interior. If you step out of the coffee shop into the main part of the building, you will find a space that is clean, modern, and open without being cold and sterile. This time around, I opted for coffee instead of tea. (Though my colleague had tea, and I was pleased to see that this location also gives you proper pots!) My Americano was delicious--the beans were roasted just right, and the pull was perfectly timed. As was the case with the Uptown location, this I e reminded me of a great, cozy independent coffee house from my old stomping grounds in Seattle.

Yelp
Love love love this place!!! Such a cute gem! Good service and delicious coffee! I got the carmella latte and it's soo good! Sadly it does get real busy so seating will be hard to find, I know it was for me I sat in front of a window in the sun and it was literally 30 degrees out but I felt like I was melting hahah. But I ended up sitting outside and still enjoyed it. Try carmella when your here!!

Yelp
Often busy but still the best espresso in town. Prices are reasonable for speciality coffee and are not particularly cheap nor particularly expensive.

Lee S.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday morning, was busy but not packed. Plenty of seating available, stools along the window not the most comfortable if you plan on typing a term paper but plenty fine for a cup and a game of cards. Pastries were just fine, didn't blow me away. I had an Americano, was very pleased, everything I expected; nothing more, nothing less. My wife had a soy latte (large), said it was the best she had ever had (for reference, likes Starbucks soy latte, does not like Caribou soy latte). Cool place, nice atmosphere, would recommend to anyone looking for a spot to hang out with good coffee.

Bryan M.

Yelp
Yelp doesn't let me give 3.5, but that is my actual rating. I've been here maybe 3 times and during all of my experiences something bad has happened service wise. Pros: The place looks really cool! Very aesthetic place that makes you want to stay and drink your coffee. The lattes are really good, but the coffee is so okay. I like to drink my coffee black so I can quickly tell if it's good or not, and this one is just okay. But for espresso drinks, this is the place to go, good quality espresso drinks. Overall pros, one of the coolest looking shops and good espresso drinks and pastries. Cons: Pretty expensive, but I guess worth the price if you drink was made good. The biggest con is the service. All three times I went the baristas were rude, gave me weird looks. Took long to attend me, even though I was the only one in line and there were three of them. One time I could tell they didn't bother making me a good drink (no micro foam, and really bubbly latte) which is annoying considering how I payed and tipped. And their normal coffee is very acidic, really just okay. Overall I'm done giving this place a chance. As a coffee drinker, the coffee is not good enough to outweigh the bad service they give and the difficulty to find a seat.

Yelp
I stopped in Thursday at 1pm to catch up with an old colleague. I was able to get a parking spot on the street right in front (there are parking restrictions right in front during commuting hours). This was my second time at this location. The interior is quite lovely and rustic. Very open and spacious environment. It's a great place to have coffee with a friend or have a work meeting. However, there were plenty of people working/studying individually as well. I got the seasonal "Sage Against the Machine," which is a sage-infused caramel latte served with a mini stroopwafel. A tad expensive, over $5. I wasn't able to get a hint of the sage, but it was beautiful latte art. They also had a nice, small selection of pastries and donuts available.
