Spyhouse Coffee Review - North Loop - Minneapolis - The Infatuation

"If you want a really good cup of coffee in Minneapolis, you’re never too far from one of the four Spyhouse Coffee locations around town. Each shop feels right at home in its respective neighborhood - clean and modern in the North Loop and industrial in Northeast, where Spyhouse roasts all of its coffee. If you need a caffeine boost and maybe a snack between meals, figure out which Spyhouse location is closest and head there immediately." - Kyle Meehan

Google
It is a nice place to get coffee, hang out with friends, and even study or work. The only downside is that some customers walk in with dogs. The dogs shake off their fur, and the customers use reusable utensils with no lids, making it easy for the fur to get into the drinks, which is unhygienic. It is even worse if you’re allergic to dogs.

Google
This place offers an incredible experience with its charming vintage vibe and beautifully crafted cups that elevate the atmosphere. The spacious seating and delicious pastries pair perfectly with their amazing coffee. They also serve teas and other non-coffee drinks, making it a versatile spot for everyone. Whether you’re starting your morning, catching up with a friend, or working on your laptop, Spyhouse Coffee provides a cozy and inspiring environment. Highly recommend for a memorable coffee outing!

Google
Love this place. Hadn’t been there in years, but went with a dear old friend and had a delicious matcha. Definitely a treat.

Google
Great coffee and service. Try the Carmela with Almond milk.

Google
I forgot to get his name but today the guy working the register in the early morning was amazing! He was very engaging & I had a very pleasant experience in the shop while doing homework. My latte was made just how I like and this place doesn’t charge more for milk alternatives!! :) I also enjoyed the NY style coffee cake. I love Spyhouse Coffee.

Google
Spyhouse is a really good “local chain” The Hennepin shop is a good place to hang out and work. Plenty of space to spread out. Coffee (as all other Spyhouse locations) is good. They know what they are doing. Not the least expensive around, but consistently tasty with good service. Parking is mostly on the side streets and you may have to walk a little. Definitely less fun parking/walking in winter, but not terrible.

Megan Chicos

Google
I love this location. The staff is always friendly and they make a consistent latte. They also have delicious sandwiches and pastries. I highly recommend the almond croissant. It's also close to Lake of the Isles and street parking is usually readily available and easy to find.

Google
This coffee place is an excellent place to work for hours on end and the staff are friendly. However, everything costs A LOT compared to most coffee shops in Minneapolis. I recently ate lunch here for the first time and ended up paying $12 (pre tip) for what was essentially a microwaved sandwich that was overly hard on one side and too soft on the other. Aside from prices, my biggest complaint is that they don't have any sugar-free syrups, which limits my drink options as a diabetic. They do have great vegan options with no upcharge, though! Can't win 'em all I suppose.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
Came here to work on some homework with a friend. I got a seasonal drink that was a lemon flavor (I can't remember exactly what it was), but it was delicious! I really wanted to try their vegan cinnamon roll, but they were out so I got the brownie instead which was good, but a little rich for my taste. I really loved the interior, they had a lot of plants and the decor was super cool. The staff was very friendly as well. I will certainly be back.

Yelp
The vibe here is classic coffee house. Relaxing, lots of morning light streaming in, exposed brick walls, chill music playing. They also have a lot of places to sit, which can be lacking in many coffee shops. The espresso I ordered was pretty good, too. What I did not like at all was the wait time. I was there for over 15 minutes from getting in the 3 person line to leaving with my espresso. The staff were doing their best, but it seemed like they needed another person helping out as the 2 people were running about doing lots of extra stuff.

Yelp
The vanilla orange latte was very good !! One of the best coffee i have had recently. Love the vibe of the place. Would definitely come back again. Just wished there were some more bakery options.

Yelp
We love coming here, great location and great coffee! The character in the space is so fun. Everyone there is nice. We always try to stop for a coffee when we are nearby. Today's drink of choice was the cortado and look at how pretty it is!
google avatar

Yelp
Ugh! How come the coffee here is so tasty. I sat here for a couple hours and got two drinks. A simple iced caramel latte with almond milk and light syrup. I also got a pumpkin spice girl. Both of these were amazing. Full of flavor and beautifully presented. The atmosphere of this place is quiet, cozy and comfortable. There are plenty of people buzzing about; studying or passing through but overall it is a lovely spot. I would recommend getting a coffee and hipster/ new age vibes aren't for you get it for a walk around the lake! It's super close ;)

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops to stop into during the semester, and even over the summer! I usually enjoy the chocolate croissant and the pastries are baked fresh daily from patisserie46. This space also has big windows and tons of plants. I usually have no trouble ordering because the baristas tend to be patient when I'm looking over the menu. I frequently opt for seasonal specialty drinks since I've been there almost everyday last semester! Pro tip use contactless pay you can earn points that way. This location is moderately sized and dogs are welcomed if you're quickly in and out! If you're lucky you may even see some cute pups in sweaters during the winter :)
google avatar

Susie A.

Yelp
Cool window hang out spot! So great they had the always amazing baked goods from Patisserie 46 (not pictured, but I bought several to bring home). Great coffee in a no waste mug! ;) I would visit again!

Yelp
Love Spyhouse Coffee! I've been to 3 of their locations and the coffee is consistently good. My favorite is their trademarked Carmella (a caramel vanilla latte)!! It's so creamy and not overly sweet. The barista was very friendly and made out drinks pretty quick. We also got Spyhouse Drinking Glasses to use at home! The space is very cosy and a good place for catching up with a friend, reading a good book, or working for an afternoon. Check them out if you are in the area visiting or a Minneapolis resident!

Yelp
After spending five years in Seattle, I have high expectations for coffeeshop culture. This spot is the closest I've found to what I loved about Seattle coffeeshops. Baristas that grind, weigh, and pull every single shot. None of that automated BS. Minimal menu, with thoughtful seasonal offerings. A latte that always tastes delicious and no charge for alternative milks. The space itself is perfectly cozy and intentional. The ideal space to work from for a few minutes or a few hours.
google avatar

Nety D.

Yelp
The barista was super helpful considering we had never been there before. She broke it down from hot to cold and sweet and not sweet. I got the spygirl and loved it except it wasn't as sweet as she made it sound but I prefer sweeter drinks. I added some more simple syrup and that fixed it for me. The actual coffee taste was very good too!
google avatar

Yelp
I mean my cappuccino was tasty. But I'm not sure where these coffeehouses are going with these prices. Tasty, but what the actual hell...

Shakur J.

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend this cafe to any person of color. They racially discriminated against me and my family, completely ignored us standing in front of the register for 15 minutes. When I walked further down the counter to get their attention, staff quickly returned to the register serving the white woman who was standing behind me. And ignored my protests that I was first. After that I attempted to get the WiFi password from another staff member and was completely ignored. I wanted two things when I woke up this morning, to use my laptop to complete work in a public space and to drink a cup of coffee, Spyhouse on Hennepin denied me of both.

Yelp
Spyhouse makes great coffee! It is very balanced- never too sweet, never too bitter, etc. However, their pastries are nothing to write home about, and are very overpriced. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the vibes are always good. I have also, always had great experiences with the employees. However, this is not a good homework or work space. They block off all outlets, making it so you cannot charge your devices, and the lighting is very dim. Therefore, it is hard to work in. Coffee is a bit overpriced for what you get. However, definitely a good splurge once in awhile. I have never had a hard time finding parking at this location, and there is plenty of free street parking. Therefore, overall I recommend you give spyhouse a try!

Yelp
Decided to give this coffee shop a visit while on a trip to MN for my daughter's volleyball tournament. I like to venture out & try new places when traveling as we don't have many options back home (Hawaii). After looking at the pictures via Yelp and reading reviews, we decided to give the Spy Girl drink a try, which is a lavender & honey latte. Needless to say, the drink was 'ono (delicious) & was a favorite. I ordered 6 drinks total, 5 Spy Girls & 1 Matcha Latte. When I received my drinks, they looked nothing like the pictures (no cute design with the foam, etc.), which was a bummer but didn't matter since we were going to consume them almost instantly. My only gripe was the service wasn't as friendly as I've witnessed them give to customers prior to me. 4 of my drinks came in a carrier and the barista left the other 2 without, expecting me to carry them in my other hand while opening the door to exit?? I asked for another carrier and she looked at me and said "what?" As if it were an absurd request. I repeated myself in which she provided me with an additional carrier and whispered something under her breath to the other barista. I'm not a MN local but in Hawaii *most places end a service with a "thank you" or "have a nice day" but didn't receive that here. Anyways, I'd visit another Spy House location if the opportunity arises but did not go back to this location during my trip. The coffee was great but service was sub par. *4 stars for the coffee being so 'ono. I would have given it 5 had the service been better.

Yelp
Location - Loud, contemporary music with country overtones. There are lots of tables with outlets available. The store is a bit harsh in ambiance and there is a lot of sound bouncing around. There are a few cushioned booths but mostly wooden seating with tables--Great for working on a laptop. Staff - The staff were helpful in making my coffee choice and gave me some options to consider. Coffee - I ordered the MN Women's option and was pleased with the flavors. Definitely far from a traditional coffee but very tasty.

Yelp
Please read whole review "Since the beginning, we wanted Spyhouse to be a welcoming environment for our customers and communities; we didn't want a niche café that felt exclusive. We aim to be a destination café for the Twin Cities and open up the coffee community to all who want to be a part of it." This is from the Spyglass website in the about section. I was really excited to try this place as I am visiting from out of town. There were several local coffee places to chose from yet I was intrigued by their trademark offerings. 1) there was no welcome upon entering. 2) one of the employees seemed to be on a break, yet when a few friends stopped in jumped up. 3) it took a while to be acknowledged yet a great conversation between the two employees. Now for the coffee...I tried the Carmella. The barista did an outstanding job and the coffee was excellent. I also tried the monkey bread and loved it. I would come back, but lower my expectations for a welcoming experience.

Yelp
Airy cafe with expertly crafted espresso drinks, a variety of teas, non dairy milks, and cups for self serve water. Sweet and savory pastries in a case by the counter. Pay cash, card, or by phone. Friendly staff that work quickly to keep the line moving (it's always busy here!). Gender neutral accessible restroom in the back. Parking out front on the street for an hour. Plenty of outdoor seating in the summer, as well as comfy indoor booths.

Yelp
Great coffee, customer service and atmosphere. Staff is very friend. Awesome place to study

Yelp
Gorgeous and cozy coffee shop in the heart of Uptown Minneapolis. If you are a coffee shop/cafe connoisseur, you'll need to add Spyhouse to your list. The coffee and different drinks are very good. They serve a wide variety of hot and cold options as well as some more unique seasonal items. They also have pastries to go with your drink. But what I enjoyed about this place is the decor and atmosphere. The wood and exposed brick interior creates a warm homey and cozy atmosphere. There paintings and mirrors and candles add aesthetic touches to enhance the atmosphere. The latte art is beautiful. Even the coffee mugs have little Minnesota's outlined in gold.

Yelp
Visiting from Cincinnati area and heard this is the place to get coffee so we check it out. I love the vibe of the aesthetics and the cafe, but as for the rest- kind of underwhelming. The staff and service was kinda of non memorable- not problematic, but just kinda of- nothing. I ordered a cold brew and added cream as I always take my go to bev- it was not "my cup of tea"-I like my coffee to be smooth & sweet (not sugary-but the actual coffee notes to melt in my mouth)-this cup had sharp/sour notes. I didn't ask if they use different roasts/varieties for different drinks or on rotation, so maybe I'd like something else they have-but as for this visit- not a big fan.

Yelp
One of my go-to spots downtown. There's really no bad option. If you are unsure of what to get just ask the staff. They are extremely knowledgeable.

Yelp
So many many def feelings about the cafe... so I'm just going to keep it kind of short. Kind of. I ordered a shot of espresso, a cappuccino, an apple fritter and a seasonal sweet pie (cranberry and lime). Yes, I over ordered but I wanted to try a variety of things to get a good sense what they had to offer. So for a coffee shop, I come for the coffee. And honestly the coffee was disappointing. Through the espresso, I could taste the coffee was a bit tired. That said the barista did do a great job of getting the most possible out of the coffee. 3 stars for the coffee, 4 for the shot, so 3.5 all in. The cappuccino was worse though. There was some off flavor that I can only assume was something with the milk. It almost tasted as if there was some cleaning detergent left in the steam pitcher. I guess it could have been a poorly pulled shot, but that seems incongruent with the previous extraction. Solid 3 at the very best. The saving grace of the visit was the baked good action. Both of the choices I made were phenomenal. Just delicious. Please please go check out the baked goods. Have some coffee, but relish the baked goods. O. M. G. 5 stars without question.

Yelp
I'm a big Spyhouse Coffee fan. This is the first time I've been in the shop on Hennepin. Coffee in a big non-take-out mug is so good. Always enjoy the art and it's a nice touch to have a mug with our great state on it. The taste is why I come back. Got a nice booth by the window. Most people on a late afternoon weekday are working on their computers so noise is non-existent. Great place to work, or sit back, rest, and enjoy the coffee and music.

Isaac B.

Yelp
Nice place, great staff. Pretty busy, but there are tables in back. Enjoy the neighborhood vibe.
google avatar

Miranda W.

Yelp
Spyhouse is a Minneapolis staple for a reason... the drinks are well-made, the atmosphere curated skillfully. Not my favorite place to get work done, but a cool spot to meet a pal and catch up.
google avatar

Katie U.

Yelp
I've been dying to come here ever since I moved to the Twin Cities because I had read about how awesome the coffee was. Compared to some of the other local coffee shops I didn't think Spyhouse stood out above the rest. Overall good coffee and cool ambiance but very similar to many other shops in the area. They do have some nice specialties, I got the spygirl which is a latte with lavender and honey. It was really creamy and good coffee flavors but I didn't really taste the honey and lavender I was looking for. I know their other locations have cool atmospheres in fun neighborhoods so I will probably check those out at some point. Maybe I'll like the coffee more in a different hipster environment.
google avatar

Athena J.

Yelp
Awesome staff! Tried the caramella with oat and it was delicious. Best coffee I have had in Minneapolis. Also tried the A/C cooler and I would highly recommend. The jasmine flavor really comes across and the drink is very refreshing. Also great that the place is open late !
google avatar

Yelp
A fantastic option for coffee, either to go or to stay. I recommend you stay, in my opinion the prices are a bit pricey, but I see it as you are paying also for the atmosphere, which for me, lasts for a few hours of great productivity. Atmosphere: This is one of my favorite spots. You probably won't need your own headphones, they have a great variety of playlists that do not distract from your conversation or work. Make sure to explore a little, there is more seating than you see when you first step in. I personally enjoy the back room, it is slightly quieter, fewer people, and great natural lighting. Coffee: The staff knows what they're talking about, so if you have questions be sure to ask. I personally love their cold brew. No it's not a cold press, it's real cold brew that will be sure to jump start your day or work session. They also have the classic variety as well as their own menu of u inquest creations.

Alex h.

Yelp
Cooper the barista is the kindest coolest sexiest barista i've ever had and I am mourning the fact that I am leaving Minneapolis and this wonderful store!
google avatar

Lex S.

Yelp
Coffee is a bit bitter and the music is loud. But if you like more of a "club" atmosphere while you sip and do your work, then this is the place for you. Everything about this place is hipster and old fashion while having a modern edge. I like the coffee bar where I can work on a stool with a big surface. Some issues with the wifi but they were helpful and helped me resolve them. Lots of plants if that's your thing.
google avatar

Kamrin D.

Yelp
**Disclaimer: I don't drink coffee, this is for the tea drinkers.** Their tea options are decent. They get their tea from TeaSource (which is excellent btw) and another place (I forgot the name). They had black, green, and white tea so I appreciate the variety. Spyhouse actually brews their tea correctly and they time it so it doesn't over brew. If your a bit of a tea snob like I am, this is a big deal. Unfortunately, there were a few downsides to this location. The places is packed and there wasn't any seating available. I ended up getting a tables in a back corner right by the bathroom. I'm gonna be honest....it was kinda awkward. I also wish there were more options for tea like a London Fog or Matcha Latte. In conclusion: The drinks are pricier, although well made. Not the best selection of non-coffee drinks, but they brew their own tea correctly. Finding a spot is tricky so maybe come early or be forced to make awkward eye contact with all the bathroom goers :)

Marissa M.

Yelp
Hipster vibe. Fine for studying or hanging out (though a tad dark). Service took quite awhile although they weren't super busy. Also over priced in my opinion. I paid just under $7 for a vanilla latte with soy.

J.B. W.

Yelp
Employees looking more and more unkept and malodorous at this location specifically. Today a young woman behind the counter had horrid BO and was wearing a muscle shirt with no bra--her breasts were very visible. Disrespectful attire for public and certainly for an establishment trying to serve food and drink.
google avatar

Valentina P.

Yelp
I love this spyhouse but it's just way too crazy busy. It's always packed, it's always loud and there's almost never anywhere to sit. That being said, they always play the best music (the baristas control it with their own playlists), and they make the coffee really good! It's a very cute and quirky location, the fun lights everywhere, the black tile ceiling, the pretty vintage pieces hanging on the walls.. every spyhouse location is so different and fun and amazing in their own ways! It has to be my favorite cafe chain. My favorite drink here is the almond milk mocha, it tastes great and it's not too sweet but it's not bitter either. Their teas are great too, and their lavender latte is boooooomb.
google avatar

Yelp
Very satisfied with my experience at Spyhouse last week. My group came in on a Friday night 20 minutes before closing. We had just gotten ice cream down the street and a few of us were getting sleepy despite having a long night ahead of us. Spyhouse was practically the only coffee shop still open at 10:30 PM. I wanted a pour over, but it was close to closing so I settled for drip coffee. Nothing spectacular, but it was close to closing so that's understandable. What made my experience at Spyhouse memorable was the service. Very friendly staff and they even offered us free refills since they were closing down shop for the night! Another plus for Spyhouse is that it's spacious and cozy. Lots of chairs and tables for customers. Skip Caribou and Starbucks, and give Spyhouse a try!
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
Location is everything when it comes to Spyhouse. I have been to other locations and not had great experiences. That being said, I came in on a rainy day, which automatically wins 10 points for Gryffindor because we all know that coffee shops + rainy days = heaven. My cappuccino was lovely. My barista was kind - which seems to be a rarity in the craft coffee shop world. Is it just me or do most professional baristas look angry or like they'd rather be anywhere else but serving you? (Perhaps they're all Enneagram 4's, just romanticizing about someone or something else.) Regardless, my experience was great. I got some studying done and journaled for a bit. Only critique: the music was quite loud and the seating was scarce.
google avatar

Maryam W.

Yelp
Spyhouse is aesthetic coffeehouse goals. It possesses a warm charm with its dimly lit interior, plentiful seating, and unique and delightful coffee options. I enjoyed a vanilla lavender iced coffee that hit you with the subtlest quip of lavender after a sweet vanilla taste. Spyhouse was also pleasantly busy for a Saturday afternoon, assuredly a popular spot in Minneapolis. Definitely the spot to go for an afternoon out with friends or a nice place to study for an upcoming exam. Loved the visit, Spyhouse!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Since I go to college across the country, I am always happy to come back home and go to Spyhouse. It really gives me that warm and fuzzy Minneapolis feeling during the winter, as its location is right in the uptown area. There is usually places to park on the street and I've never had to walk very far from my car, which is especially nice in the cold winter months. The inside is inviting, dim, and so cute! I really like their chai tea lattes and almond scones (those are deadly). Their wifi is pretty fast and it is usually pretty quiet on week nights. It is a good place to study because of the wifi and the abundance of outlets they have. They also have an outdoor seating area for the summer. Love Spyhouse, as it always makes me feel at home!
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Great music, great tea, and great ambience. Feels like home for this lady from the PNW. A lovely independent coffee house for when you want to relax or get some work done late in the evening. (Thank you for your hours, Spyhouse! I can't believe how early all of the other coffee shops close!)
google avatar

Maddy G.

Yelp
Good coffee and not too far from a lake to take your coffee on a walk. Was a little dark and loud inside on a Saturday so might not be ideal for working.
google avatar

Milana Z.

Yelp
The place is really cute! But the coffee here isn't the best. I didn't like how my vanilla latte with oat milk tasted. I don't know if I'll get coffee here again!
google avatar

Aaron T.

Yelp
In high school, I frequented the Spyhouse in Northeast. The delicious chai and cozy aesthetics were my absolute favorite! Nowadays, I am within walking distance of the Uptown location, where I often find myself greeted by the most capable and kind barista, Elin, who gives me the perfect dirty chai every time. Between the coffee, the pastries, and the lovely back room, I am always ready for a long study session, quality time with friends, or a quaint moment alone with my thoughts :)
google avatar

Shiloh W.

Yelp
My least favorite Spyhouse location. This place is way better most coffee shops in the twin cities, but their other locations are so superior. The coffee is delicious every time. But the service is lacking the spark the other locations have down. They aren't as friendly and feel more like coffee elite than neighborhood baristas.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Spyhouse is a charming cafe serving up traditional espresso drinks, as well as some eclectic creations. I got the jasmine green tea lemonade, which was refreshing and sweet for a hot day. The interior is quite large and has Botha and tables for lounging. Most people were chatting away, so it might not be as much of a worker's cafe, but you could still enjoy a book or use your laptop nestled in the back if you'd like. There's also lots of seating to enjoy outdoors on a nice day. Overall a fine place to come for a coffee chat.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I have been stopping here once or twice a week for a couple of years now, and found it to be one of the better places to enjoy a good cup of coffee and do some work. This is what a majority of the hipsters and professionals are doing on any given day at Spyhouse Coffee shops. But last week Spyhouse did something that can only signal their intention (or at least desire) to change the customer profile. THEY HAVE REMOVED MOST ALL OF THE ELECTRICAL OUTLETS FROM THEIR STORES. Yes, for everyone used to reaching under the table to plug in a laptop, will now experience what it feels like to bang their plug against a blank, plastic wall plate. This also includes their U of M campus location off Central Avenue, which is supported overwhelmingly by college students who go there to drink coffee and study. A bold business move that sends a pretty clear message to me, and should to the rest of their most-loyal customer base...If you used to come here with your laptop, please go somewhere else." I hope this all works out for them. Unfortunately for me, I will need to go somewhere else.

Yelp
This was a fun little spot to try out with friends before dinner on a Sunday afternoon. It was quite crowded and the wait for the drink to be made was a bit on the long side, which only made it a tad confusing as people came in and out of the wait line. The worker taking orders didn't take names so it wasn't always clear whose drink was whose as they came out! As there was much confusion and people touching other people's drinks, that is certainly something the owner should probably look a little closer at. I had the iced Spygirl (lavender and honey latte). While I could NOT taste the lavender whatsoever, my palette could decipher that there was something more than honey in the flavor. I can only assume it was the lavender. I might try the Spygirl again. Since I live in Saint Paul, this spot won't be a go-to spot for me (ever), but I would go back if someone wanted to meet there.

Miguel S.

Yelp
I used to like this specific culture, and environment. Have been going to other coffee shops for practical reasons but today my other spots where closed because of extreme temperatures. So I gladly went there. All good, till I am told they don't do refills. "Only on a mug, not paper cup" is the answer I get. I answer that I don't get the logic of the same beverage being charged a different price depending on the type of cup. And to top that, the person tells me "we only offer $2 refills on mugs"...$2??? WTF? Do they put gold in their coffee? Any place I go with coffee as good charge $0.7-$0.8 dollar for a refill. Last time for me!!

Yelp
Perfect way to start the weekend! I would highly recommend their butter croissant . It was perfectly crisp and moist at the same time!

Yelp
We visited twice in six months and both times were hand-slapped verbally. First time I was paying with Apple Pay and was made to feel as if I was taking too long ordering. So I used Apple Pay to hurry and to be touch less, not realizing it takes multiple pass codes to use so i slipped my mask down for literally half a second for FaceId -- nope! "Please do not do that again!" I was scolded. Even with a six foot tall Plexiglas shield between us. How about just giving me a pass one time people. The second time we were in we were rushed again and then scolded for standing too close to the bar and the barista gave us nasty looks. As a barista myself, my wife and three kids also baristas, working for tips, I can say this chain has a management problem.
