This is one of West Chester's few dive bars, dark and dreary usually with music from 20+ years ago it's a cheap place to drink. The food isn't the deal it once was but still cheap for town, good after a few beers. The crowd tends to be a bit older compared to the other bars in town.

Jim “The Cheesesteak Guy” P.

Google
The Cheesesteak was very good and came with french fries. It had a nice big bready roll. It had a good/very good amount of meat. The meat, fried onions, mushrooms and sweet pepper were so well chopped together that they could have spent time together in a food processor. The cheese was melted through the whole cheesesteak. I didn’t get an itemized bill but I think the cheesesteak was under $10. I am a big Square Bar fan.

Google
Best bar in West Chester. Not full of itself like most places in the bOrOuGh.

Google
Feels like I’m in my grandfathers basement in all the right ways. Incredible chicken nuggets.

Google
One of the best low key places in WC. A bit off the normal path but well worth the trip. Great verity on tap and food is absolutely delicious. Definitely go for the cheese steaks and shoot some darts while you booze.

Google
Great place to watch a game at . I had the wings and they where incredible

Google
A place all its own! Great service and drinks. TV, games, darts, appetizers, popcorn, juke box.....what more could you want?!?! Service is quick and it is mellow during the week if you want to go on and catch a game on TV or have a few drinks and a conversation with friends. Still very affordable- can get a few good drinks with a quality vodka and some snacks and not break the bank!

Food left something to be desired but the drinks were good and the staff was super friendly. Vibe is cool but the cigarette smell was too much.

Yelp
Great old school West Chester dive bar. The vibes and scene are just the spot to catch a game or catch up with an old buddy

Yelp
Good bar food! If you love a good dive bar Square bars your place! Best fries in West Chester

Mike K.

Yelp
Thank you Frank for the complementary wings and pizza for the Super Bowl. This is why the Square Bar is the best. You take care of your patrons.

Yelp
Great place to catch a game or wind down after work. Big fan of the drafts & chicken cheese steak. The smash burger & onion rings for 2nd place

Niles L.

Yelp
Horrible. Got a pizza and there were many pieces of plastic in it. 3 slices I pulled pieces out of my mouth. A 4th one a friend took a video of. I discreetly told the bartender. He said he would comp us. 20 minutes later the manager said he would comp all but our drinks under pa law (A LIE). I am disgusted. Our drink total might have been $20. Such a mess. Never in my life have I been so disrespected . Ps two of the three people I was with WHO DIDNT EVEN EAT MY PIZZA SAID THEY HAD SCRATCHY THROATS LIKE THEY ATE PLASTIC. Plus the manager ADMITTED WE ATE PLASTIC!!! Said he found the problem! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????
google avatar

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
This was my absolute favorite bar in West Chester. Best cheesesteaks around. Tonight they served us a pizza with plastic brush bristles throughout it, then they comped our food but made us pay for the beers, when they said they had looked into it and we definitely were right, the brush was missing bristles after they put oil on our pizza. After we ate plastic. Think a disintegrating paint brush. The bartender was very accommodating. The manager was less than accommodating considering we just ate a paint brush. When my dining mate posted about it on Yelp, the manager literally accused us of trying to get free food. Screen shot posted below.

Yelp
Used to live nearby and this place will forever be my favorite. A neighborhood bar with good food and great company. The chef salad with either grilled chicken or chicken tenders is my favorite. Awesome curly fries, onion rings, and rotating beer selection. Best bartenders in town. They bring in some great DJs and live music, and host an epic party every year during the Restaurant festival. Long live the Square.

Yelp
This is a good enough local place to get drunk at. A nice place to blackout at. But not a 5 star place. Have realistic expectations. That's not to say it isnt fun, but miller lites and darts is what it is. Cheers

Sara M.

Yelp
This place is super divey, but if you're looking for a good local dive bar, look no further. Also, great chicken fingers.

Yelp
To get this out of the way, I attended West Chester University and then continued to live in town for a year or so after...so I know where to get drunk in town. Thank god for Square Bar. where else can someone go and watch shrek on the big screen while eating fries and drinking cheap beer? where else can someone go in west chester without having to be surrounded by a really shabby version of a girls' gone wild video? i mean, we used to have rex's back then too...so that helped a lot...but sometimes you wanted quiet...you wanted tables...you wanted a bathroom that wasn't terrifying. guess what, when i'm in west chester, this is still my first suggestion if someone suggests we get a drink. i'm a creature of habit though and i love my dive bars. i mean, let's face it...you're not going to get laid going here (dear god i hope not)...but you'll probably smile and laugh and get to know your friends a lot better. so thanks for existing square bar. you made my early 20's pretty hazy and i appreciate it.

Yelp
I agree 100% with Russ' review - the Square Bar is the archetypal neighborhood bar - unassuming, inexpensive, friendly, and fun. I love their oval bar where you can observe the other patrons. It looks like the decor hasn't changed since the mid-70's (if not earlier). Their food is inexpensive but quality pub fare - mostly fried food and sandwiches. It's a great place to stop by for a late nosh or to go with friends. Their table area, while small, is flexible enough to be reconfigured for largish groups to have a good time together there. Their beer and drink prices are excellent though the tap selection leaves something to be desired (they haven't bought in to the microbrew trend - yet). Years ago I lived a block away from The Square Bar and we went there once during a hellacious rainstorm. The lights went out, everyone had a laugh and just kept chatting and drinking. It was divine.

Yelp
What can you say about the Square Bar? In a college town, it's a diamond in the rough. It's one bar that is never over crowded, attentive bartenders, and good enough food. The bar is tucked away from the main street, which is a plus. Most college students pregame here before hitting the trendier, bars in town. Even on a Friday night this place is never too crowded. There is always an interesting mix of people, young and old. It's never too loud and there are multiple televisions for your sports viewing pleasure. The food is classic bar food. Chicken tenders, onion rings, fries, etc. I ordered a chicken tender salad and the portion was huge. I highly recommend the cheese steak, absolutely delicious. For a so called dive bar, they have a pretty impressive beer selection. It is one of the cheaper places to drink in West Chester and that makes this place pretty great.

Yelp
Great local dive bar. Take a cab/uber have a beer and a shot then soak it up with some chicken fingers. Nice little hideaway.

Yelp
Square bar is the best bar in west Chester. Food is great and people are great. I couldn't imagine leaving less then 5 stars but Karen's are impossible to please. This is a bars bar. Have fun with watch the birds and drink Millers. See you there

Yelp
I've gone to Square Bar more than a handful of times, and always with the same crowd: a group of men who are sweat-covered after playing volleyball for a few hours. ... and we fit right in. You get what I'm saying? The decor is 1965, and the vibe is too. The food is also right out of that era... but I confess I did enjoy the open faced turkey and gravy sandwich on white bread I got there. It was not because the flavors were great, but it was the pure nostalgia of eating something out of my childhood that I thought died off long ago. It was an extinct sandwich brought back to life like in Jurassic Park. The positive reviews are from people who love this particular dive bar. The beer is cold, the place isn't too loud. Thus, you can enjoy a night with the guys. I doubt you could find any women who think this is a place they want to spend any time in, though.... and I prefer my guys' night out beers with the ability to at least look at pretty women, not just the sausage fest.

Yelp
THIS is the best bar in West Chester. If you are not looking for the Square Bar, you will most likely not find it, as it is not part of the main strip of Gay St. But travel off the beaten path and you'll come across a bar that doesn't look like it has changed at all since its conception. Inside, under a cloud of smoke, you will find everything you would want from a neighborhood bar. A dartboard, shuffle-bowl, and a jukebox with great classics line one wall, while tables scatter throughout the rest of the bar. You meet some fascinating regulars at the Square Bar...once I was playing darts and a guy named Marty who was wearing black sweatpants and shirt came over and offered me some pointers. I have never thrown darts as well as I do now. Sweatpant Marty is just one of the many friendly personalities you will find here. The Square Bar is an amazing place. I also wanted to find a bar that reminded me of Cheers and their "everybody knows your name" mantra...with the Square Bar, I found it.

Yelp
This place is the best local bar I have ever been to. Kara is the ultimate bartender!!!!!!!

Yelp
Best local bar ever. Friendly and just like it's always been. Almost! A few upgrades...juke box. Lol
google avatar

Yelp
Coldest beer in town, best hot roast beef in town, and one of the best cheesesteaks in town, too. All local, all excellent. A great place to watch a game!

Yelp
Great local dive bar. Square bar is one of my favorite bars to go in West Chester, although it can hard to find a seat at the bar during happy hour. The bar tends to be full of locals (not college students) and sometimes parking can be hard to come by. There's always plenty of great beer selections on tab as well as chilled fireball and jager shot machines. There's a TouchTunes jukebox so you can play music directly from your phone. They also have a shuffleboard type of bowling game and darts. If you're looking for a relaxing bad to go to just a block away from downtown, square bar is the place to go.

Yelp
Doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, a neighborhood bar that hasn't changed since I was in college in West Chester 15 years ago. I think they actually have the same curtains. That's part of their charm. Good prices, decent beer selection for the type of place it is, and the food, although straight up bar food, wings and fries, etc...is solid.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
This place is as divey as it gets. But it's chill and a lot of blue collar workers hang there. Firemen and EMT hangout. A lot of old peeps too. But if you like dives, you'll love it!

Yelp
My friend and I have been going to Square Bar for a no frills dinner and a beer. Great little place, clean and a nice place with a flash of the past. Though, disappointed in my credit card transaction. My friend and I split a bill which was $39.00. The bartender returned 2 receipts supposedly split of the $39.00, not so, each receipt had a $22.00 balance. Do the math. After inquiring to the bartender and asking back for the original bill (which she did not present with our split receipts) we then brought the error to her attention. She didn't seemed surprised and with her being busy we decided only to bring to her attention and not pursue further inquiry, wasn't worth it.. We did then decide the EXTRA Balance would be left as a tip from us. Not a way to do business.

Yelp
I agree with the other reviews. The square Bar is local no frills bar. My husband is a Firefighter and this is a hang out. I ordered chicken fingers but I really got 5 of the biggest cf I have ever gotten! The fries are hot and crispy. You aren't going to find a Pottery Barn setting, but you will get food and a drink and not spend a lot.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a no frills, great neighborhood bar, check out the Square Bar. Prices are great, and always some great music on the jukebox. They also have a great oval bar which is great for checking out people. And to top things off, they have a dart board.

Yelp
I used to live across the street from this bar so it was very convenient to run here and grab a six pack to go. This bar smells like someone peed in a corner when this bar was first built and no one ever bothered to clean it up. great bar if you like that sort of thing but it's not my cup of tea.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
The Square is one place where everyone knew my name. I could roll in here in scrubs after work, or all hussied up after a night out in WC and close the bar out. When my best friend moved out of town the owner let us have a corner of the bar to hold her party, put the cake in the fridge, and decorate. Ahh.....good times, good times. Try the food too - it's actually good.
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Best Dive Bar around! Thankfully it is now smoke free, although it still has that old cigarette smell. The food is great and cheap. The simple beer selection and house wine is just fine. Our Volleyball team shows up in athletic gear and no one cares! And the owner helps sponsor our local rec league. The staff is always glad to see you, asks you how you have been, and the locals love to chat with you across the bar but no one seems stalker-like. Any time i feel like getting out but not getting all dressed up, i can stop in here alone if need be and get a very cheap but decent meal.

Yelp
a "different kind" of bar in West Chester. I love this place. Decent Food, Inexpensive, Friendly Staff... call it a dive bar, but I call it a hidden gem! great place to actually be able to hold a conversation with friends while enjoying a beer. Good place to watch a sports game also. The place feels like one big happy family.

Eric L.

Yelp
Love this place! Great beer selection and awesome food. $4 Bells Two Hearted Ale and chicken cheesesteak was perfect. Recommend highly!

Mike S.

Yelp
great dive bar with excellent roast beef sandwiches. one of the few bars without a lot of college kids.

john y.

Yelp
God bless a good old-fashioned dive bar. I've re-discovered this place after being smoked out one too many times in years past. But now that it's smoke-free (or maybe just nobody smokes anymore??), it's a great place to grab a beer with no pretension, watch a game, and even enjoy decent bar food. Blue collar, professional, student, softball player...it doesn't matter. They're all here, and they're all enjoying themselves
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
Probably one of the friendliest bars ever. They usually have a good beer selection. Comfortable stools with great TV's. The food is great bar food and inexpensive. Unfortunately one of the last times I went in there was some blatant shady activity with two guys sitting at the bar constantly being beckoned outside by some unsavory types. After the "transaction" they would take up their conveniently positioned places at the bar near the door. The bartender, a rather congenial older gentleman with glasses, welcomed them into the bar like returning Medal of Honor recipients. I imagine they slipped him a few bucks to set up shop on his shift or supplied him with other party favors. I see this often in local bars but this was very sad this time as the bar is generally frequented by softball teams, sports fans and public servants like firefighters and police. I mean, you've got to love a place with a painting of Ron Hextall on the wall. I've been back since that occasion, as I said I've had great affection for this bar. The young guy with glasses who runs the kitchen is such an awesome guy I was watching my diet and he would make special food for me to keep me on track. When I would order wings or a cheesesteak he would double check, not preachy, just making sure and offering alternatives. He is the reason I went back and it was fine. Different bartender which may be the common denominator.
