Pecan-Fired Pizza Plans for Spring Opening in Savannah, GA - Eater Carolinas

"Jacksonville, FL, chef Chris Dickerson wants to bring pecan-wood-fired pizza to Savannah, GA, with Squirrel’s. The forthcoming pizzeria will sit at 2218 Bull St. and serve pies, sandwiches, salads, and small bites prepared in a custom wood oven. Dickerson currently runs “Mexclectic” restaurant Corner Taco in Jacksonville. He is moving to Savannah to open Squirrel’s Pizza and be closer to his two-year-old son. According to the chef’s bio, “When he’s not strategizing about his next restaurant endeavor or spending time with his son, Dickerson enjoys delving into some reading or testing out a new recipe in the kitchen, as long as it doesn’t require mayonnaise.” He might have to compromise on that mayo thing if he’s serving sandwiches to a Southern crowd. Look for those small plates and pizzas (sans mayo) to be out this spring. Keep up with all the test pies from Dickerson on the Squirrel’s Pizza Instagram account." - Erin Perkins

The place is usually empty, which should have been a sign. The best thing about this place was the pizza. Yes, it's thin crust, almost cracker like, was really good. That's all though. The wings were meh. Small, not crispy, sorta like baked wings. No ranch given, just lime which is strange. Could have been more saucy. Only three beers on tap, 1 local the rest from big beer companies. It did seem, at first, that the server really didn't want us there. I asked if they had WiFi and she said she didn't know it. I tried engaging her but she seemed like she had better things to do despite the fact that we were the only ones there. I'll come back for the pizza. I really did like it.

Google
Usually their pizza is pretty good, not great, but decent. However, the delivery I just received was probably the worst I’ve ever gotten. This was supposed to be a margarita pizza in the photo! Cold, stale, burnt and not even a margarita. 2 pizzas delivered were $43! Sorry, squirrel. Won’t be wasting money with you anymore!

Google
I appreciate how thin & crispy the wood-fired pizza is at Squirrel’s. Great toppings, but my favorite detail is the basil drizzle. Solid beer options on tap. Recommended.

Google
Very good pizza with a fun decor! I’m generally a pizza snob but man did they knock it out of the park. Their Benny Blanco Vegetable pizza is one of the best, most unique, pizzas I’ve ever had. Parking is sparse but it’s worth the effort, this is a must visit!

Google
Pretty decent pizza. Thin, crispy crust, all the way to the edge. More cracker-like than yeasty (no chewy, bubbly crust). Sauce not too sweet. Pepperoni is pretty spicy. We liked the white pizza with lemon. Margaret(a) pizza was just ok (has red sauce). Service was fine. Parking is very limited.

Google
Not the same vibe as it used to be. Went tonight for a few pizzas with family. It's like the customers are an inconvenience to the staff. Seat yourself now, not greeted, sat a few minutes before we were provided menus. The lady dropped two drink menus and one dinner then said I will be back and walked off. A few minutes later we were ready to order. Cokes are a can only for $2.95, no cup with ice, just a can. No soda fountain anymore. I kindly asked for a cup and ice which seemed to be an annoyance to the busy staff. Pizzas were made and sat on the bar before bringing them over to customers hot and fresh. Two of the three pies were really good. The Benny Blanco had cheese on half of the pizza, no rosemary or lemon. The other half was dough. Really disappointed it's gone down hill like this. I guess we will stick to Eastern wharf in the event we decide to return to a Squirrel's location. Edited review so photos are from a previous visit 4 years ago.

Google
Nice quiet eatery and bar. Pleasant atmosphere, relaxed, with outdoor dining to enjoy beautiful days, with excellent food and service. I agree with other reviewers and the pizza can be a little bigger. However, the taste makes up for that outstandingly.

Google
Had a fantastic dinner, Allison was very friendly and knowledgeable on the beers they have. Tomatoes were the freshest ever, everything was just the best about all thier pizzas! Even a simple cheese pizza is the standard for the simplest ingredient. Heck even ordered a small sloppy joe for my youngster and enjoy the hell out of it. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great setup - pizza tasted light... ingredients were fresh - wings were good A bit quirky but the food/service was good...

Yelp
Kind of a weird name and theme (for the interior of the place) but at least there doesn't seem to be any squirrels on pizza. The sizes are personal if you are hungry. The variety of offerings is pretty extensive but of course you can build your own too. I enjoyed sharing the Funghi and the Grilled Pineapple+Bacon. Though the pineapple was good the mushrooms won the taste test on this visit. If you go with a group ordering selections to share amongst everyone is the best way to go! I like the fact there is very little crust at the edges. Not much dough is wasted uncovered. The dough itself isn't quite tri-state area good, but it is close. I also tasted some of the Caprese salad at the table and that was very good as well. Service was attentive and the wait not long for the food. Overall, I think no matter where in the country you hail from this place is going to rate high on your pizza places list.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Savannah, we were wandering around the Starland district, stopped by Water Witch for cocktails and needing dinner stumbled upon Squirrel's Pizza (right next door to Water Witch). I am so glad we did! Squirrel's Pizza is serving up delicious pizza and amazing cocktails in warm and welcoming environment. We began our visit with cocktails. Having already had superlative cocktails next door at Water Witch, I was expecting more basic, ho hum cocktails here (it is a pizza spot, after all). Not so! Squirrel's Pizza offers thoughtful, well balanced, deliciously rendered cocktails. For our starter, we opted for the baked chevre, which is a combination of chevre and tomato sauce--all wood fired and served with sliced ciabatta. It was a solid good. The chevre was flavorful but the ciabatta was a little too dryly toasted for me Then came the pizza. They describe their pizza as a combination of neopolitan and romano pizza tonda. It was absolutely amazing. All the flavorful char one expects from neapolitan style pizza paired with the crispiness that I've come to learn is signature for romano pizza tonda. Truly, an absolute delight. We opted for Benny's white vegetable pizza (aka Benny Blanco), which is a delicious combination of fresh mozzarella, parmesan, rosemary, lemon agrumato and an extra virgin olive oil base. *chef's kiss* The service was attentive and kind. As I mentioned the atmosphere was warm and welcoming (and who doesn't love all the anthropomorphic squirrel art? Get to it!

Yelp
We had been hearing that Squirrel Pizza was a really unique place to eat. The Bull Street location is pretty plain inside and doesn't strike you as a good looking pizza place but it's some of the best pizza crust that we've ever had. To me that's the most important part of the pizza and they really have their recipe down. The fact that it's oven-fired pizza makes it that much better. The service was outstanding. It was not very crowded that night. My wife had the white sauce with sausage and I had the specialty pizza with sausage, pepperoni, green peppers and onions. My wife's pizza could have had a little more sausage on it but overall both pizzas are very good. We split a side salad and overall the food was really good. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Claire D.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery which was fast and efficient. Food was subpar. Got two pizzas, sausage and a veggie and a salad. The pizza crusts were tasty but the rest very bland. The veggie pizza had a fishy taste which was quite off putting. The salad arrived with the dressing on the side, yet the lettuce was completely wilted. First time trying this place, probably will not try it again.

Yelp
Yikes! So disappointed! I love a good mushroom pizza and the Funghi was listed as a favorite. I decided to add some meatball for protein. I was so bummed when I opened the box! This is what the pizza looked like on the website and this is what I got. Major fail.

Smit J.

Yelp
This pizza place is a gem! They have a huge selection of delicious vegetarian pizzas, along with fantastic service and a great atmosphere. The pizza itself is incredible - perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. If you're looking for vegetarian options, this spot is a must-try. In my opinion, this location has better pizza that the Eastern Wharf location. We tried the Benny Blanco roasted vegetable pizza. It was decent overall, but I was expecting a bit more in terms of roasted vegetables - in terms of variety and quantity. The crust was amazing though, perfectly cooked and flavorful.

Yelp
*this is based on an online order* ordered form Uber eats, received one of four pizzas and a salad that wasn't up to par. Missing a basil vinaigrette and they are out of mushrooms and did not contact me (they said they don't have iPads to contact an Uber eat order- strange). I think what turned me off with this interaction was the lack of accountability from Squirrels with this mix up. No apology or effort to rectify the situation. I went through Uber eats to fix it. To me, it sounds like a new online order system needs to be implemented. Food is still good, but when I called to discuss, whomever was on the phone was short and matter of fact. I understand this is a business, but this is also my patronage. I value businesses taking the extra mile. Online Orders are differ than In person. My in person experience was MUCH better.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Great local pizza place for the community to go to for authentic old school pizza. I delightfully discovered after a wonderful experience at the yard brew pub that had really no food options because the food trucks were either out of food or whatever... I could order pizza and then pick it up on my way home.
google avatar

Sara D.

Yelp
I am from the northeast and pizza down in Sav has massively disappointed me. I really want to love squirrels because the overall style of pizza is good but it's massively overpriced for the size and quality. I have to say it's really sub par. See attached photos for size comparison and note that the mushroom pizza is 60% crust & 'pizza bubbles.' Some folks like pizza bubbles but I do not. I also paid extra for caramelized onions that were left off. I think I count 4 mushroom pieces and that is the "funghi" pizza. Have been disappointed the few times I have had this pizza so I would likely go with Mellow Mushroom or Screamin Mimi's instead.

Yelp
This place has a great feel. The owner clearly took time with the aesthetic. But the service lacked. The bartender took a while to acknowledge us even though we were only two of four people at the bar and maybe one other person at a table. Ordered two beers and waited a while and finally decided to leave since we didn't get that. Tried to be friendly with the bartender and she was clearly not wanting to be there. I feel for her but unfortunately not what you would expect for service. The pizza smells amazing. But didn't get to the point of having so can't rate that.

Yelp
We ordered pizza from Squirrel's yesterday because they have gluten free options. This is exactly how it looked when it arrived. We paid $60 to DoorDash to receive this. Burnt, small, and no markings to indicate which was gluten free. Our friend has Celiac's disease and will get very sick, so he was hesitant to try it. Thankfully, we didn't have any problems, but the pizza was not good. We called and spoke to a very nice lady who said there was nothing they could do. I was able to get $13 back from DoorDash because it took an hour to get to us. Very disappointing.

Karrie H.

Yelp
Poor service, lukewarm (at best) pizzas, clearly cooked ages ago and kept on the counter maybe. Difficulty getting an itemized bill , waitress wanted us to just believe her then she changed her mind a couple of times about what we owed. Never again

Vicki D.

Yelp
We ordered deliver. Pizza arrived on time. I got pepperoni my husband got a meat lovers. They were the best pizza we had in a very long time. They were cooked exactly how you would want them and were delicious. We would go back every week if we lived in Savanah.
google avatar

M W.

Yelp
We ordered delivery, and maybe that was a mistake. The pizza was nothing special, and neither me nor my family wanted to finish it. It arrived quickly though, and was still hot by the time it got to us, so credit where credit is due

Yelp
This was such a fun and cozy place! The food was amazing and so was the atmosphere! They didn't open until 5:30 so we ended up going next door and came in once they opened...which was a smart idea since later it was PACKED! We ended up having the wood-fired Jumbo chicken wings and the Caprice Salad with fresh mozzarella which was the BEST I have ever had!!! I was licking the plate it was that good!! For the main dish I had the Margaret pizza. It was good but not the best I have ever had. I would love to come again and get that salad but would love to try other pizza options.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been wanting pizza as a short break from my seafood. I noticed this was brick oven pizza. Totally worth it. Order one with red sauce and mushroom and pepperoni. It was perfect. Crunchy oven baked crust. So good! We also ordered 6 wings from the oven. So glad we did. Nothing was wasted. Totally a great experience. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Harry T.

Yelp
Best pizza in Savannah. Comparable to Roberta's in Brooklyn. Coming from NYC this is the only good pizza in Savannah. This is masterfully made brick oven pizza with the perfect cheese and topping ratio. The ingredients are well curated and carefully selected. Every bite is heaven. All the negative reviews are from people who don't know what a good pizza is. They complain about not enough cheese or not enough toppings. These are the people that should stick to Papa John's. The negative reviews are all from folk who like soggy, doughy, dripping with grease overloaded American slop of a pizza. If that sounds like you, stay away.
google avatar

Ahmed K.

Yelp
This place was a disappointment. We went on a slow Thursday and it took 45 minutes to an hour to get our food. IT looked like they could only make 1 pie at a time. The wings were also very sub par. If you want excellence pizza in Savannah go to Vinnie gogo. No pics
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
We have been here twice. WE LOVE IT!!! The servers are super nice and the food comes fast. Their beers are good. We had the Margherita pizza. It was delicious!!!
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Golly. What an absolutely horrible experience. From no fresh fruit for a cocktail to raw dough burnt edged pizza and a flooding bathroom. The wharf is a 1000 times better.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
We were excited to try this highly acclaimed pizza joint. You can tell they are passionate about pizza. The ingredients are quality and creative. The pizza is baked in a stone-fired oven. The mozzarella is house made fresh mozzerella (and is thick on the pizza). It's a craft pizza experience. The pizzas are personal sized, but large (you may take some home). This allows each person to order the pizza they want. They have a small selection of predefined red and white pizzas. You can also build your own craft pizza from the list of ingredients. We came with friends so we had chance to taste 4 different pizzas. Pepperoni (red pizza) - sounds like a classic pizza but the pepperoni is thick and some of the best quality pepperoni I have had! I am not normally a pepperoni pizza fan. Hoisin and Togarashi Chicken white pizza with caramelized onions and hot honey (build your own). That's right, I ordered a hot honey in front of my wife LOL. As you can see, the ingredients are unique and creative. The chicken is an Asian style and the hot (spicy) honey provide an amazing savory sweet touch without being too spicy. It was our favorite pizza in the group. Benny Blanco Royale with beef tenderloin (white pizza). The beef tenderloin was a bit tough and chewy. Was not the best pizza in the group. Benny Blanco Royale with leg of lamb (white pizza). This was a better choice as compared to the beef tenderloin. It's a good meat and cheese pizza. There isn't a lot of seating as it's a small place but the atmosphere is nice, and feels like a diner. The bar has a well curated stock of beer and wine.

Kristi C.

Yelp
The atmosphere and service was really great. Our waitress was very sweet. I mentioned some food sensitivities that I have and she was very empathetic. She offered to go ask about ingredients to be sure what I was eating was safe for me. The pizza was good. Not amazing but really good. Overall we had a pleasant experience.

Raymond D.

Yelp
A+++. Pizza was delicious. Wings were awesome. Service was great! All around a great experience. Would definitely go back!
google avatar

Julia W.

Yelp
I have had this pizza once dining in; it was pretty good! Do NOT order for delivery. I used Door Dash. I had a GF crust, with added veggies, paying extra, and the quantity was ridiculous. The taste of the pizza itself was fine, - but the amount of mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach were so skimpy it was a joke! I must say I was disappointed with my experience this time.
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
They suck beyond belief! I ordered and they took over an hour, the delivery driver didn't even knock and left food I the porch to get ice cold and the awesome-not cook didn't put onions, basil and charged $5.00 for a tiny piece of duck!!!!
google avatar

Me A.

Yelp
Seriously...just got my Uber ears order and it may as well be frozen grocery store brand. I can't believe it. Do y'all send horrible pizza as to go orders?
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
I had this pizza delivered and it was delicious, I bet it would be even better if you ate it at the restaurant. This was a delicious thin crust style pizza with quality ingredients, I'd recommend it.
google avatar

Carolina B.

Yelp
Super yummy pizza and wings. Used UberEats and ordered it to our hotel. Wood fired/Neapolitan pizza is the only kind I will eat and this did not disappoint.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Stopped by this hidden gem looking for a pizza close to where I was going. I orderd on line it was ready when I arrived hot and fresh. Pizza are a bit small for the price but they are delicious.
google avatar

Ashleigh W.

Yelp
Update: After having burnt pizza, the owner contacted me and was able to issue me a refund! He was very adamant about making sure the problem was resolved which was great. I was actually surprised at the level of customer service. When my fiancé and I are back in Savannah we will give it another try! Thanks so much!
google avatar

Alice J.

Yelp
My first visit here, I love the hometown feel of this place, small an quaint. It was a girls night we had the Korean Buffalo Wings they were delicious, I would choose these wings over other places over tired. We also had Margaret Pizza which was great as well, along with 2 lemon drop martini. A lot of first for me. The atmosphere was super nice with candles on the table. Our waiter was very attentive for a Friday night. I will definitely be going back . Sorry no pictures, I was really hungry

George G.

Yelp
Service was great, pizza had no flavor though (4 stars for crust, 2 stars for sauce and 1 star for cheese). Should have known since starland was busy that night and no one was in there. Charged $2 for a tiny drizzle of hot honey... like c'mon. Hopefully new location on eastern wharf will be good.

Rob B.

Yelp
Trash. Barely any peperoni, also ordered sausage on it, got not one piece. Will never order again.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Delicious pizza. Downfall is appetizer portion and price. Don't get me wrong, they were delicious-- but the two appetizers we ordered were $9 a piece and each person at our table (4 people) only got to try 1.25 bites before the plates were clean. The plates left the table with me wanting more and my wallet being annoyed.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Great customer service, nice staff and fun atmosphere. The menu has a lot of choices for pizza and craft cocktails.
google avatar

Cherice d.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised how good the vegan pizza was. 10 out of 10. Next time I'm in Savannah I will be going back.
google avatar

John Q.

Yelp
As a professional dolphin trainer, I travel a lot up and down the coast as well as internationally. Squirrel's Pizza is a rare find and a local treasure! The owner / operator, Chris Dickerson, is a classically trained chef and you can tell by the selection of ingredients and presentation. The style of the pizza is Napolitano, but with a bit more substance on the crust, enabling a sturdier platform for toppings. The wine list is extensive, with a focus on good vale for money. The cocktails are delish, clearly a throwback to Chris' underwear modeling past! Marky Mark, eat your heart out at Squirrels Pizza!
google avatar

Leah O.

Yelp
We have eaten here a few times and they have never disappointed us. We love that we can sit outside. But the inside is comfortable too and is nicely decorated. I love the caprese salad and the green salad. The basil vinaigrette is very tasty. My favorite pizzas are the margaret and the roasted vegetable. My husband is a meat eater and he always orders the Italian sausage. We like having our own pizza. That way I can order my veggies (which my husband calls rabbit food) and he can have his meat. It is also nice they serve Peroni on draft. That's a real treat. Our last visit we brought a friend that had never been there. He loved the framed squirrels wall like we do. He ordered the Mexican coke and explained its much better than American coke. I did not know that!
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Went to the Bull Street location. I didn't end up getting pizza as I wasn't really in the mood for it. I had a the Caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and baked Chèvre. Both were excellent! Highly recommend!

Bex W.

Yelp
been here over 10 times and i normally love this place but i just ordered a pizza and it is 80% air 20% pizza.. When I politely asked them to remake it she questioned why... which I figured it was obvious and then proceeded to say it might look exactly the same.... do better squirrels -.-
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
I'll make this short. Our pizza arrived 1.5 hours late, cold and burnt. When I contacted the restaurant they assured me that I would receive a full refund. Well, I didn't. I ended up having to dispute the charge.

Laura S.

Yelp
Pizza was tasty but EXTREMELY small for the money and very few toppings. Entire pizza had maybe four single square chunks of pineapple and four tiny squares of bacon! The sauce and cheese were so minimal you could still see the base of entire crust through it. Other than flavor, completely overpriced for what we got. Very disappointing, Cute name though...perhaps the portions are for squirrels!
google avatar

Stacey C.

Yelp
I love this place!!! The sale and pizza is the best in town. The fire oven crust is divine and the red sauce and cheese is so fresh. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Laura E.

Yelp
*First time eating here *Service was good and so was the food *Glad there was outdoor seating we got to bring our dog *Drinks: -I got a Mexican Coke -Husband got a Luau Krunkles (reviewed on Untapped: leggers2) *Appetizer: -Baked Chévre (pictured) *Main: -I got the Pepperoni Pizza (pictured) -Husband created his own pizza (Italian Sausage, Rosemary, Caramelized Onions, & Extra House-Made Mozzarella) *We'll be coming back and trying more of the menu

Yelp
My Husband and Visit this restaurant on August 19, 2023, because some of our highly recommended it. Upon enter the restaurant we were not greeted. The waitress was like sit where you like. We huge fans of good customer service. She only came back once and that was for our bill. My husband tried to engage the cook and he was really rude! When you work hard for your money and spend it in a restaurant that has attitude, That's a problem for us! We will not go back or recommend it to our friends and family! If you try this place maybe you will have a better experience than we had.
google avatar

Anuska J.

Yelp
Went on a Friday night. Pretty busy, comfy booth to sit at. They have a bar area as well. Our server took our drink order but took a bit of time for us to receive it. our appetizer, Wood Fire Korean BBQ sauce, came on time. It was very juicy and flavourful. Right after the appetizer arrived our 2 pizzas, Sausage + pepperoni, and Margaret. They were really good as well. It was super cheesy and you could actually see the cheese fat dripping. Overall nice food and ambiance. Would go again.

Lindsey P.

Yelp
My pizza tasted burnt so I had to send it back. Not a lot of flavor rhe for the price. Not my fav pizza. The drink I had was good though.
google avatar

Claudine S.

Yelp
Fabulous food, great service, awesome variety. Definitely going back! Love this place.
