José Andrés’s Nonprofit Funds Efforts to Get Austin Restaurant Meals to Hospital Workers | Eater Austin

"ICU staff at this campus received individually packaged meals prepared by local restaurants as part of a coordinated donation-funded effort, benefiting from pre-scheduled deliveries that address hospitals' restrictions on unannounced food drops and providing morale-boosting support during high-demand periods." - Erin Russell

Had a family member go in through the ER, have surgery and then stay for a week to manage wounds etc. From the ER staff to the trauma surgeon to the nurses and staff on the 7th floor we were so impressed with the quality of care received. There was one very impressive tech, staff member Ihla, who was with us on the 7th floor for 2 days back to back and she was absolutely amazing! She was so sweet and attentive and made our last two days there actually very pleasant! Also the nurses were just top notch and let’s be honest these guys are doing all of the hard work! We never waited to get the care we needed! The hospital food could improve some but that would literally be my only complaint. The free garage parking was a nice bonus. And the coffee from the robot coffee machine in the main lobby is very good!! Gotta try it!

All Personnel were extremely courteous and helpful! Although, some additional 'training' is in order: First IV took 2 trys (Uncommon <never> for me), but I've seen my 100 pound wife take, as many as, 5 tries, with the last coming from an experienced Nurse (from the ICU).....Aids, mostly not Nurses, in the 'recovery' phase administered Ultrasounds on my bladder very 4-5 hours. 50% were inaccurate. This cost me an additional day in the Hospital.

Every nurse I encountered on the 5th, 7th floor or cancer center did such a wonderful job caring for me. When I fell ill and was hospitalized, diagnosed with cancer, during my bone marrow transplant. The staff performing my biopsy, imaging, when they came to draw blood everyday, the cleaning crew all were professional, kind, and helpful. Thankfully I have had such a great experience with hospital staff and personal.

I had my gallbladder removed here recently as a scheduled laparoscopic procedure. From reception to post-op every staff member I encountered was kind, professional, and attentive. I felt no anxiety and was confident I would be well cared for. I wouldn’t hesitate to be treated here again if I ever need another procedure, and would highly recommend this hospital to friends and family.

I was admitted to St. David’s Hospital (ER) – South Austin Campus on 12/11 at 4:15 a.m., and from the very first moment, I felt seen, heard, and cared for. There was no wait at all—I was taken into triage almost immediately after presenting my medical records documenting severe Ulcerative Colitis (pancolitis). I was treated promptly with medication, including pain control, and placed into my own room for the first couple of hours of my stay. Due to this location being understandably busy and operating at or near capacity, I later gave up my room to someone with more acute needs. I was placed in the hallway, which is not uncommon in situations like this, but what stood out to me most was that the quality of care never changed. My nurse, Alexandra, and her Tech (a wonderful young woman, with a sincere desire to help, whose name I unfortunately cannot remember) checked on me consistently every 2–4 hours. Every need was met, my pain was managed as effectively as possible under the circumstances, and I never once felt forgotten or overlooked. By that evening, I was moved to the second floor, where I was immediately welcomed and cared for by my new nurse, Zabrina, and her tech. Zabrina went above and beyond—providing not just medical care, but genuine compassion, attentiveness, and concern for my overall wellbeing. That same level of empathy and professionalism was reflected throughout my stay by so many members of the team. Nurses Jason, Jade, Chin, and Leon were also exceptional! All the Tech staff, especially Brooklyn, were without flaw as well! Doctors G, Ray, and another female physician were equally outstanding—thorough, kind, and reassuring. On my second day, I was also deeply grateful for a visit from the hospital chaplain, who stopped by to offer reassurance, comfort, compassion, and encouragement. In the middle of a difficult and painful season, that moment of spiritual care meant more than words can express—helping remind me of God’s presence, my purpose, and the hope that carries us through even the hardest times. As I write this, I am still here at the hospital and scheduled to discharge tomorrow, as everything continues to progress according to plan. I was hospitalized here in 2023 for the same condition, and I can honestly say I remain continually impressed by St. David’s South. Somehow, they have managed to improve upon an already exceptional standard of care. My pain was treated and controlled, attention to detail was evident at every step, and I rarely had to wait for assistance. Thank you, St. David’s South, for your incredible staff and top-notch quality of care. God forbid I ever have to return—but if I do, my wife and I will continue to make the drive from our home in Buda, passing multiple hospitals along the way, to ensure that I land here. Because at St. David’s South, I know I will receive the very best care possible.

A pre-planned procedure at this hospital went generally very well. Pre-op nurse Abigail was thorough and eased my worries beforehand. Nurse leader in this area, Lisa, was calming. PACU nurse Lindsay helped me feel comforted after coming out of anesthesia. Post-op nurse Leslie was gentle and caring. Post-op nurse Kanon was diligent and helpful. My room was cleaned while I was there, an emergency team assembled quickly when I needed them, the food I was able to ingest was decent. Only my transfer from one bed to another was bad; smoother transitions or better training for that skill is needed.

I came to the ER because I was 9 weeks pregnant, actively bleeding, and had just learned that my baby no longer had a heartbeat. I was already scheduled for a D&C on Monday, but because the bleeding started and the pain became intense, I rushed to the ER believing — as a first-time expectant mother experiencing my first miscarriage — that I could ask for an emergency D&C or at least guidance on what to do next. I also recently moved to the US, so I am still unfamiliar with the healthcare system and protocols, which added to my fear and confusion. I also want to share that when I first spoke to Dr. Schlessinger, I was alone. My husband had been separated from me due to space limitations. I understand the ER can be crowded, but being in such a vulnerable position — frightened, grieving, and physically in pain — made it even more devastating to hear what came next without my husband’s support beside me. Unfortunately, my interaction with Dr. Schlessinger was extremely disheartening. She was condescending and dismissive of my concerns. Instead of helping me understand my situation, she told me that my bleeding was “not an emergency” and that I “should not have come.” Hearing this while I was miscarrying my first pregnancy — alone, new to the country, and already terrified — made me feel completely invalidated. At a moment when I needed empathy and clarity, I received neither. In complete contrast, the nursing staff were exceptional. When I cried and said “I don’t understand,” they took the time to explain everything with patience and compassion. They listened, comforted me, and helped me feel safe in a deeply confusing and painful moment. Their kindness made all the difference. Dr. Schlessinger returned twice with a noticeably softer demeanor, but the emotional damage was already done. This experience has left me traumatized and shaken my trust in the U.S. healthcare system and this hospital. With or without knowing my personal background, she could have approached the situation with empathy and basic human care — especially during something as heartbreaking as a miscarriage and especially for someone still learning how the healthcare system here works. I am incredibly grateful to the nursing team who supported me with understanding and compassion. I truly hope the hospital takes steps to ensure that no one else feels dismissed or belittled during such a vulnerable and life-changing moment.

My mom was rushed to St. David’s ER due to a severe allergic reaction, and I cannot thank the nurses enough for the incredible care they provided. From the moment we arrived, the ER nurses were calm, attentive, and quick to act, which made a very scary situation so much more manageable. They all tried to speak Spanish to communicate with my mom. How, sweet from their part! Unfortunately, I don’t recall all of the nurses names except for Svere. Also, when my mom was later moved to her room upstairs, the nurse who cared for her there was just as amazing. She was compassionate, patient, and made sure my mom felt comfortable and safe through everything. I am truly grateful for the professionalism and kindness of the entire nursing staff. They turned a frightening experience into one where we felt cared for and supported every step of the way.

Yelp
We went to St. David's South Austin for my wife's delivery after a transfer from the Austin Area Birthing Center. We felt incredibly fortunate to be at St David's as the care we received was fantastic. The doctors and the nursing staff were very kind and professional and I felt we were in good hands the entire time we were there. They worked with us as best as possible to accommodate our birth plan and calmly discussed our decisions and options every step of the way. We're especially grateful to Dr. Kelly for being there to support us for the delivery itself and for safely delivering our baby boy into this world! Also shout out to the nurses in the postpartum ward who cared for our baby in the early mornings which allowed us to catch up on some much needed sleep!

Yelp
St. David's South Austin Hospital -- the worst, most heartbreaking experience of my life. My boyfriend was star-flighted to this hospital, and from the moment I walked in, everything felt like a nightmare. I was told I'd see him "soon," yet I was left sitting in the ER waiting room for 2 1/2 hours with no updates, no compassion, no urgency -- nothing. Just silence while the person I love was somewhere upstairs fighting for stability. When I finally made it to the STICU floor, they made me sit in another waiting room for an hour, watching minutes crawl by while my chest felt like it was being crushed. And after all that waiting -- all that fear -- they told me visitation was over. The cruelty of that moment is something I will never forget. I refused to leave because at that point, it felt like they didn't care about him, and they definitely didn't care about the people who loved him. A few nurses were human and treated us with kindness -- but the rest acted like our presence, our questions, or even our pain, was a burden. My boyfriend went entire nights without being changed. There were times I came back from grabbing food or showering and found him half hanging off his bed, completely helpless and uncomfortable. Seeing him like that broke something inside me. When I tried to speak up about these things -- things anyone with a heart would care about -- instead of listening, they brought in five security guards to intimidate me and escort me out. Five guards, as if advocating for the man I love made me a threat. That moment told me everything I needed to know about how this hospital treats families: with fear, disrespect, and absolutely no compassion. I eventually got to a social worker who actually listened and let me back up. But the second I returned, staff cornered me demanding his phone and personal belongings -- belongings he did NOT have, because everything he had was cut off during transport. When I refused to hand over things that were always in my possession, they again threatened to remove me. The emotional whiplash, the fear, the disrespect, the constant feeling of being pushed aside and treated like a nuisance -- it was overwhelming, traumatizing, and downright heartbreaking. I have never felt so powerless or so dismissed while someone I love needed help the most. The care my boyfriend received felt inconsistent at best, and the treatment I got was cold, hostile, and unforgettable in the worst possible way. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. I will never return to St. David's South Austin Hospital for any reason -- not as a visitor, not as a patient, not ever.

Yelp
Recently went to St. David's ER in Bastrop. My blood pressure was extremely high and I felt unsteady, and my head felt full of pressure. I got a head scan, and 1/2 of a pill for anxiety. The doctor who came in did not listen at all, especially when I explained the my current medications. The nurse who took blood didn't know what she was doing. I was left with 2 painful large bruises, which I still have 10 days later. The diagnosis was incorrect. The doctor did not do any tests to arrive at the diagnosis: "Hangover Without Complications", and anxiety. Nothing was done for my high blood pressure. I left 2 hours later still with high B/P. I left a phone message to St. Davids Manager for ER in Bastrop but she has not returned call. My next step is to contact Patient Advocacy. If they don't call back, I will consult a lawyer.

Yelp
I was in a high speed car crash where I was pinned in my vehicle because I was directly struck by a car into my door at 55 MPR. The back door was ripped off but my door was pushed into my seat. Trapping me in the car surrounded by all the deployed airbags. The ambulance brought me to this hospital. It was mid morning and fully staffed. I had a swollen and bleeding foot, pain and numbness down my leg and pain in my pelvis and could barely talk. Extreme dizziness abdominal pain and nausea and tingling down onto my fingers. They did not do a complete examination of my body to check for any other injuries, contusions much of anything but checking my vitals. My foot never was X-rayed and yet they X-rayed my femur twice and a CT scan was done twice on my head but no MRI. Lots of confusion. I was so out of it with a TBI that I didn't know what was going on. However I did tell them my leg had already been X-rayed and nobody was listening to me and did the same tests again. I've never had low back issues and after they did an X-ray of my lumbar, it was discovered I had 5 herniated discs. It felt like my pelvis was damaged at least with torn ligaments and impinged nerves. The comment I was told in passing was that it was arthritis and nothing was wrong. My bloody foot wasn't even cleaned or any type of basic first aid. I had facial and jaw pain with bruising and some cuts. Not at all addressed. My white shoes were covered in blood. I was never given a room of any type the entire time I was there. Not even a slot to wheel me in with a curtain. I was left out in the hall for 8 hours. Never changed into a hospital gown and had to demand at least be given a saline IV drip since they wouldn't let me eat or drink anything. I was so dehydrated and had t had any water or food since the evening before. I had a panic attack with all the trauma and was convulsing on the gurney in the hall. Finally someone walked by and noticed me. He notified my doctor to come and give me a sedative and a blanket. When I said I had to use the washroom I was ignored. I came in at 11AM and it was now after 5PM. This went for a couple hours of asking. I finally yelled out announcing I was getting up and asked for a wheelchair to wherever the washroom was and got no response. I managed to get up and holding onto the wall stopping every few steps gasping for air. I staggered past the nurses station in great pain and asked again for a wheelchair and where the toilet was. Without even looking up, a nurse pointed in the general direction and I managed to make it there. After looking in the mirror, I saw blood from being cut by my sunglasses and a bruise forming on my cheek. I looked at my hospital bracelet and it had me as male and other inaccurate information like my weight and height which seemed to describe a teenage boy. I didn't even know they had 'discharged' me until after an hour of laying there with no attention, I asked some random guy in scrubs what was going on and he came back to say oh you've been discharged. Handed me some papers and walked away. No wheelchair was brought and no direction of where the exit was. I had called my BIL to come picked me up and found my way to the main entrance and not the ER entrance. I've never felt so ignored and dismissed. Complete PTSD from the whole experience. This type of poor communication and negligence can lead to a lot of errors that can be life threatening. They need to step it up and be more careful.

Yelp
Kim was an amazing nurse that I talked to when I called this afternoon. So warm and hospitable and genuinely cared about me. Give that woman a raise she deserves it!! Helped get to the bottom of my symptoms

Yelp
I would rate the emergency room at St. Davis South a zero star if that were an option. My husband was experiencing what seemed like a possible heart attack. He visited two different urgent care centers, where two nurses advised him to go immediately to an emergency room for further evaluation. He followed this advice and went to St. Davis South, with the nurses notifying them of his possible condition. I work in the north part of the city, and after navigating Austin traffic, I arrived an hour and a half later. When I got to the emergency room, my husband was still waiting. After informing the staff about the potential severity of his condition, they finally began to check on him. This delay was incredibly frustrating and concerning. The overall system seemed disorganized, and the lady at the counter displayed a lack of understanding of what is needed in an emergency room setting, particularly in terms of urgency and empathy. During the short time I was there, I witnessed her attempting to check in an elderly man who couldn't speak previously 15min, possibly due to a stroke or other serious issue. She asked him repeatedly if he thought he was having a stroke. This level of carelessness and insensitivity is inexcusable. I am deeply disappointed in the care, or rather the lack of care, provided in this emergency room.

Yelp
This hopital I give 0/10 point from the service to the doctor. My dad stay here a few months and already passed away. I'm still looking around for lawyer to sue them He stay in the 6th floor. Their night shift nurse is very bad. One of them chilling while giving the patience medication like drunk and working. The hair is not neatly tight but look messy. She shaking while doing job on computer and also refuse to help patient suction mucous out and can not breathe. The others techs is Vicky she refuse to help patient go to toilet and let them do that thing on the bed. When I called to help she just bring the thing and through the dirty stuff on the side not clean neatly. The lung doctor is horrible. She said fasting before doing surgery 1 day but after that they said the doctor busy that day and they will do it next day. So my dad stop eating 2 days for just waiting her but finally she said my dad is too weak and coughing a lot to do. The Indian dotor is the main doctor on Cancer floor. He decide wrongly for my dad to have a fluid brain test when he was weak and has lung infection. Due to moving his position of processed which cause cardiac arrest while processing. 8 days later, He died after that. Finally he go back to ICU where we can call this is clean room but not clean. No one wearing mask includeds all doctor and nurses. He stay in the room number 3 which has coach roach crawling my hand while staying overnight with him. I made the report, they change to the room number 5. Supprisingly, not any room has clean cabinet 17,3,5. I open from the top to the bottom, all of them are very dirty like a few years no one clean it and some of them also broken. I've to use alcohol wipes to clean all of them. the cleaning service is just one people and she just come 1 time a day and wipe the floor not deep cleaning. The service of kitchein very and supper slow. Every single time I made a call food for my dad, They confirmed it and i wait 2 hours later there's nothing show up. Then i call back they said There're still working with it.This mean patience have to wait around 3-4 hours to have food. They close the kitchen very soon 8pm already closed. if any patience throw up the food they will have hunger until tomorrow. The patience they can't wait to eat like that. Patience will not die because of sick, they'll die because of hunger.

Yelp
For privacy reasons I won't describe the horrendous experience I had with St. David's. I filed a formal complaint about one doctor and this organization hasn't even bothered to reply, let alone investigate the matter. I provided them a final warning earlier today, and since I presumably won't hear back from them, I have my complaint ready for the Texas Medical Board.

Yelp
My mother was in and out of the hospital last year and at the beginning of this year, and she has not moved around as she was supposed to, as my mother had her right leg amputated and has MS. She was often found wet by her live-in aide Janet while she was in the hospital. She talked with the head nurse about that, as she ended up with a bedsore that the wound doctor looked at once and said that it was not open; there was nothing they could do. She then had a six-stent heart surgery and was given a 5% chance of survival and did very well. A month later, she was in hospice with an open wound that kept getting bigger. One month after that, she forgot who her daughter was and passed away.

Yelp
I recently came to St. David's a few times because my dad had some surgeries here. There were some things I picked up on given I work at a different hospital, first and foremost being that the food is pretty good here! It's better than at my main hospitals, at least. Every time I go to the cafeteria, they have poke bowls, cake, full salad bar, sometimes they also have Indian food or Italian food. I do remember them having a Mexican line once too, and they have a lot of snacks. My dad said that the inpatient food is also really good, and I saw him eating a big salad once that looked a lot better than the food that most of our patients get at my other hospitals. The staff has always been really helpful, and my dad has told me that the staff have always been really nice to him while he's been recovering from surgeries or rehab here. In fact, the last time I went here the barista at the coffee shop in the cafeteria gave me a free pastry because they were about to close and she didn't want to throw it away. The pastry was really good! Never heard anything overtly bad about St. David's I think, and certainly have not had a bad experience here personally.

Yelp
Rudeness of staff on phone in departments , information desk unmanned, had to stop staff passing in halls to ask for directions of where to go for medical care. Need for wheel chair but none available and no one offered even though patient in active labor. Directions on signage in parking lot for garage not accurate and then areas marked as accessible were blocked by traffic cones and orange barricades.

Yelp
Upon entering the ER it smells like cigarette smoke, go figure as their exterior doors just stay wide open. Super practical, super safe. I'm extremely sensitive to smoke and within minutes a headache set in. The biggest problem that I take issue with is their admin process. You literally go up to a booth situation, enclosed in glass with a loud speaker for communicating. They literally ask for your personal information and for you to list your symptoms through said speaker for the entire waiting room to hear. This is a breach of patient confidentiality and what one would think, an obviously unacceptable practice. Where tf is Hippa? How is this an acceptable practice? It most certainly didn't help that the ER clerk had a terrible attitude and was so rude, for no reason. Excuse me lady, you think I want to be here? Does it look like I'm having fun? I came here because I literally had to, you chose your career and if it's not doing it for ya, move along? No patient deserves to have your baggage thrown at them. The crème de la crème was when a nurse came out to grab a patient to take back with her and they literally said they couldn't walk. Her response was to ask if they were sure. Gaslighting much? He stood up and took a step, clearly struggling at which point she said "I can go and try to find a wheelchair if you want." We're literally in a hospital, where wheelchairs should be a plenty and there are some literally outside the doors of the er for incoming patients needing one. Words matter and the ones you choose to use when speaking, especially to patients, MATTERS. This person was clearly upset by her words and inaction and despite their initial instinct and declaration of not being able to walk (presumably without pain), they forced themselves to push through it and walk to the back (with help). They were clearly struggling. I can only assume here but I'm guessing they were desperate to sit down again and for the whole uncomfortable interaction to end. The wait to the back was pretty long as they have super limited space. Not sure what thought process was had when designing the layout of this ER. The world is basically on fire and medical care is in the toilet these days. At this point it's pick your poison when it comes to healthcare, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Yelp
Took 4 hours to get a CT scan alone. Every time I called for a nurse I was told theyd "be right back" to no avail 30 minutes each. Multiple nurses came and went for these increments as I called over and over after time had passed. The people in front of me had the same issue we discussed at the parkinglot. Thank god I wasn't actually dying of something... They said theyd send my sample off for more testing, which after waiting for 3 days with no response i called for a follow up. Turns out they never did my second set of testing with my sample they needed either. The doctor and I specifically discussed it and I had waited and waited for results. ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, they misspelled my name on every paper even though I gave my license for them to fill out the forms. (Just an FYI, it's not an uncommon name at the slightest either) I'd rather rot on the street than come back. Would give 0 if I could.

Terry R.

Yelp
I was admitted at the emergency room for a severe pain in the stomach (gallbladder issue) I didn't have to wait long before the staff took care of me, they were nice...No complaint. It seems to me that the nurse staff (some of them) lacked of experience, they didn't know how to take properly a blood pressure, meaning they used the right arm ( Always use the left arm!) the cuff was too tight on my arm! You should be able to insert 2 fingers underneath the cuff.... The staff was nice though, (I am too!) Last negative comment, the food is terrible!!

Donna S.

Yelp
Still a zero rating, but that is not an option. I call the hospital to check on my mother and the phone rings up to 40-50 times; no answer. After hours, I finally get through, they transfer me to the nurses station and then it clicks off. Disconnected. Same scenario for five days. And, the communication between the staff, patient and family is horrific. I have been trying to get information about my mother for five days and cannot. Unless I fly across the country, and go there, I have NO idea what is going on. Mom 'out of it' so I need to talk to medical staff - that is not possible. On the phone again. Already rang 65 times. WHAT A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE Hospital. OH MY GOSH!!!!! Finally got them to answer and then the lady hangs up on me. They are understaffed, but this is absolutely ridiculous. I hear that the nurses are nice (mom) but HOW can I find out if my mother is even still alive??? NO PHONES TO FIND OUT. Do I call the police to go and check on her? That is my next step.

Yelp
Hey @StDavidsHC, an observation: if you have a student orderly working the ER, make sure they know how to draw blood before they draw from my wife! She lost so much you had to charge us for nausea medicine! If he knew how to do his job, this wouldn't happen! Please make sure your students know what they are doing before you put them in your ER!!! #medicaldisaster

Yelp
I went to the ER a few months ago for a pulled back muscle that I was afraid was a kidney stone because I've had some bad ones in the past and the symptoms were similar, had never pulled a back muscle so I genuinely wasn't sure. The only person who really took care of me was the security officer who got me a wheelchair so quickly and came to my room to make sure I was as comfortable as I could be. He even got me a blanket which was so so nice, but the care I received from the doctor and nurses was subpar. I was in so much pain I couldn't even put shoes on before I left my house and when I left the ER I was in the same amount of pain. All they gave me was Tylenol and fluids and I owe them over 5K for not helping me AT ALL. The money isn't the problem but the principle is. The service was incredibly slow and my pain was not taken seriously at all by anyone other than the security officer and the CT tech. They watched my boyfriend have to walk me out because I couldn't walk or stand on my own without support. I would never ever go back to this ER again. I hope the security officer is doing well though! My star is for him and the CT tech only.

Yelp
I was in the Trauma Ward for four days. The care I received was superb: kind, thoughtful, supportive, and timely. Everyone I dealt with was a true professional. Thank you, St David's South!

Yelp
This is a long review. This is my 3rd visit to St David's in the past 2 months. The first time I was here was great! I had the procedure completed in the morning. The staff were great, I was not waiting long. The anesthesiologists was great! He and the other staff asked plenty of questions and told me the plan. They put me to sleep without putting a tube down my throat. I came to without pain and went home with Joe problem. The second procedure was completed in the afternoon did not go as well. The wait was longer, 3 anesthesiologists and a couple nurses came in and they were not sure if they would assisting with my surgery or not. They didn't ask most of the questions that was asked the first time and when my husband and I said the did not stick the breathing tube down my throat the last time and it went great, they told me that they did. They noted the medication I am allergic to and I went back for the procedure. It didn't go as planned, I woke up in a lot of pain and I had a soar throat! When I told the I was in pain the nurse called someone to get me some pain medication. They told him to give me what I had already told them I was allergic to! So I had to take Benadryl! This final visit was to the ER had to spend the night there. The place was packed but the staff were very friendly and did their best. Finally got a room the next day and spent one more night. The nurses were all so nice and the technicians and staff on both shifts were great. I could hear patients screaming and complaining all night but it did not stop them from being nice to me and checking on me. They were exhausted when they left but they were great. Overall I think it is a good hospital if you have to go, but I hope you don't have to

Yelp
As always this hospital provided exceptional care. The nurse Chance was so gentle, compassionate and courteous with my dad. The doctor main focus was my dad's care. They listen to his every word. The check in lady checked my dad in, while another nurse took his vital, while another nurse assets. They were so attentive. This hospital is just like I remembered it 16 years ago when I chose to have my second son there. This location will always be my first choice for care.

To all needs patients and family, I will take my family here first .. unbelievable.. Everybody jumped on every single patient..and all information went from one to the next nothing was left out ,and questions that were asked were about the situation at hand ,they contacted other doctors and informed them about the patient...it was watching a well oiled machine.. UNBELIEVABLE JOB YOUNG LADIES AND GENTLEMEN..THANK YOU ..HIGH FIVES AND HUGS TO ALL ...

Yelp
Pro: Great intake process for ER I was greeted by Kelly, the check-in nurse who had A LOT of work going on but was very calm and cool under pressure. I wasn't just handed a bunch of forms. I appreciate how he verbally asked what happened and didn't just submit this as "a broken hand" - he asked if my pain was in other places because of this, which I think is commonly overlooked. Pro: Quick Covid Screening Basically it looks like an iPhone app with facial recognition and screens your temperature within seconds. Pretty efficient! Pro: Less wait time than expected (But it's a hospital, so expect some) They have a screen in the waiting room stating a triage nurse assess you and they take minor injuries into one part and more severe injuries to another floor/direction. So you're not waiting on an xray next to someone having a seizure (these are real events that have happened, that's why they are the example). Pro: Clean, temperature not "too cold" Con: it's still a hospital so wait times are still a bit long for x-rays (in this case). Con: Parking can be a bit difficult to find and there are three entrances that can be misconstrued as ER entrances. I came here pretty early and was still on the 5th floor of the garage. I assume most of these were employee parking but not sure. Pro: Everyone was friendly in directing me to the right place :) Valet parking is available Registation took less than 5 minutes. Once the xray came in (the longest part of any visit, hospital or other to be fair) I was wrapped up and sent home :) The checkout process was not the daunting paperwork you'd expect. Registration mentioned additional financial assistance in case Medicaid (or other insurances) doesn't cover the larger portion. I think I am just expecting the remainder of the bill in the mail instead of the "old way" of setting up payment when you're leaving. (Tl;Dr) Overall a good experience. The employees seemed friendly and helpful but very busy so remember to be kind :) The xray (luckily) came back in 10 minutes so I was in and out in about an hour for a minor injury.

Yelp
So I gave birth to my son here 5 years ago, prior to which I spent a week here in Labor & Delivery for some unrelated stuff when I was 27 weeks pregnant. Lemme tell y'all, my experiences then were about as good as you could expect with the doctors & especially the GOLD STAR NURSES! I just had an outpatient surgery there last week, and the nurses were amazing again! The operators & registrar staff caused some undue waiting, but the nurse manager addressed my issues proactively when she heard about my experience there... if they can fix the other (less patient-direct) staff communication issues, it'd be 5* from me... but this is a 4.5/5 star review. WELL DONE with your fantastic nursing staff, St. David!

Yelp
Don't bother calling the physician referral line. they don't want to talk to you! "May I ask how you got this number?" Prepare yourself to get a lecture and belittled for asking questions. Reminder, "there are no free doctors" so please schedule with any primary care physician to buy a referral to any number of specialists except the one you need. Paying an ER doctor doesn't count. Capitalism at its finest!

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews but I was treated above and beyond by staff here. I went in late evening due to an issue and it was my first time having to admit myself to the ER so I was very anxious. But my first nurse Mark was amazing and reassuring and listened to everything. Once he left the quality continued from Savannah who took over and was so kind and attentive. To Dominic(k) who took me to my first CT scan and made it fun and a calm experience wheeling me around and then Dr. Torey (hopefully I'm right I was a little loopy) but who was not only just so so amazing to me but also thorough. There were a few others where I was unable to catch their names, who were also wonderful. Honestly the best experience I could've hoped for at a hospital and I left feeling reassured and cared for knowing where to go back to if anything changed. Even how they treated the patients around me kept that same level of empathy and genuine care! 10/10

Yelp
Worst hospital stay EVER! Our nurse Oscar was great, but he's only following orders. Staff very dismissive especially charge nurse Bea. Zero communication. Lack of attention. Don't care or try to understand concerns. They tell you what you want to hear. NOT THE TRUTH! Labs will be drawn in 15.. an hour later we are still waiting! Numbers to administrative staff don't work. They treat you like you're stupid and talk to you like you're a child. Belittling. Choose wisely! Stay at your own risk! Chicken fried steak was good!

Yelp
My husband was in hospital for a week. He had to every day tell them what medication he was actually on. And every day they said they had fixed it and it would be right from then on. It wasn't fixed for the whole time there. He was also told they had been in contact with his doctors in San Antonio and they had agreed with his care (he is a transplant patient) found out no one had ever talked to his transplant team. They lied and patient care was nonexistent

Yelp
1. They didn't even put the reason for my visit in their discharge notes. I came in for uncontrollable, full-body tremors that lasted for over 20 minutes straight, and they had nothing in the discharge notes about this episode. They cited suspected covid-19 (which came out negative) and fatigue. Really? ‍ 2. Next, they asked via text if I needed a followup call to discuss how I was feeling post visit... to which I replied yes... because I had a STROKE the next day... to which nobody ever called me... and then when I tried to reach out to the hospital I was met by extremely rude telephone operators that repeatedly forwarded me to extensions that never picked up the phone, and then annoyingly vented to me about how they didn't know where to send my call when I called back. 3. I never received a bill in the mail from the hospital. I received a bill for what appeared to be labs from a different company with no way for me to know if it's a scam or a legitimate bill because it did not come from the hospital and did not have the hospital's logo on the bill, though the labs did match was was done during my visit. 4. I get a text message from another 3rd party website that says my ER bill is ready to be paid for my recent visit. This appears to be the cost of the total visit, but once again, no way for me to know if it's a scam text or a legitimate bill because it did not come from the hospital or direct me to the hospital website to pay the bill. 5. I called again to ask about these bills and third party payment platforms to confirm that my money would go to the right place If I paid them. Once again, met by highly annoyed phone operators that treated me like scum from the second they said hello and then was forwarded to automated robo machines asking me for info that I did not have. I had to call back multiple times to get them to forward me to an actual human being in the billing department, and once again nobody answered the phones. I am continuing to make multiple calls to the billing number with no answers whatsoever. This hospital is a complete joke and it's call staff should be fired for their complete lack of assistance, disrespectful attitude, and clear cluelessness about how to do their job. At the very least, they should know how to fake a good attitude on the phone regardless of what stick they have up their rear end that day.

Yelp
I had a procedure at St. David's Medical South, the Primary Doctor and her Team that Cared for me were outstanding. I would recommend them anytime.

Yelp
This is the third time we've taken a family member to the ER here. Ron, don't go anywhere near this ER. My family member was in distress and we could never find our nurse or doctor. We begged for help and no one would come. After an hour and a half he finally got pain meds after he was going to leave. And the final icing on the cake? They forgot to call In one of the meds and the others went to a random pharmacy. Very incompetent.

Yelp
DO NOT go to St. David's South Medical Center I have had nothing bad horrible experiences starting March 2018 went in for a simple day surgery ended up waking up in the ICU being told that they surgeon accidentally took out my pancreas instead of my gallbladder so I had have two surgeries then in 2020 went to get a chest IV port placement surgery I ended up waking up in the ICU again this time because the anesthesiologist accidentally overdosed me and then surgery team left for an hour for free tacos almost died said I would NEVER go back but I was wrong in Oct 2022 against my choice EMS took me to St. David's South and I was told nothing for 9 hours straight then a lady came in to say she was moving me to other side of ER due to lack of patients and staff when I saw a sign that read "holding one" I asked what that meant she said "oh I don't know" I saw 4 cops standing at a desk next to a ER dr when I asked when I will be discharged the doctor sent me into a PTSD panic attack by repeating "oh your not going home I don't know who told you that" and i ended up going into PTSD related survival mode when i found out they had locked me in this TINY area and all they kept saying was "mam you need to calm down your not going to get out everything is locked" I even tried to explain why I was flipping out they didn't care then the doctor randomly said "mam calm down there was a mistake you can leave" no apology, no explanation NOTHING then a cop put me outside in 40F weather with a almost empty portable oxygen tank and short sleeve shirt and shorts to wait for my ride to pick me up 3 hours later I now have SEVERE C-PTSD I have to be given Ativan before entering any medical facility just so I don't go into a panic attack and when in public I go into a panic attack if I see or go near anyone wear medical personnel uniform or anyone who is wearing a law enforcement uniform

Yelp
Wouldnt recommend this hospital even if my life depended on it. My brother went to the ER twice with the issue of a snake bite, the doctors, the hospital are all in it for the money. No accountability what so ever. Too bad I had to actually give it a star.

Yelp
Outstanding care I received for surgery! The process from start to finish was outstanding. All the staff was superior! A special shout out to Shelby, RN, who did my iv. She got it the 1st time and her bedside manner was top notch!

Yelp
My wife and I have been to this hospital twice, once when our daughter was born in 2016 and again when our son was born in 2020. In 2016 I would describe our experience as average. We had some good nurses and some pretty lousy ones, the doctor was fantastic, the food service employees were rude and awful. Altogether a pretty middling experience. When we returned in 2020, it was clear that a lot of changes had been made. Every nurse we had, day and night, was incredibly friendly and helpful. My wife, who is very introverted and has trouble with new people, took to them immediately. In particular she absolutely loved our night nurse in postpartum, Anny. The delivery nurse, Nicole, was also outstanding - she didn't leave our room for the final 4-6 hours of labor and basically acted as a midwife. The room service staff was also excellent; they made sure that both of us were well-fed during our time there, and were very polite on the phone. Food was delivered promptly, they would call the room around meal times if we forgot to do so, and the food was pretty good - you certainly wouldn't come here to eat if you weren't in the hospital, but it's much better than you would expect from hospital food. Lots of healthy options, and the fruit tray is clearly fresh fruit and not canned. We were visited by multiple doctors, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, and the hospital's lactation specialist, who were all very patient and professional and spent significantly more time with us than I expected - they didn't leave the room until they had answered every question we had. We never felt like we were rushed so they could go to the next room. The facilities were great. The delivery room itself was comfortable for both of us, and it's clear that improvements have been made to the postpartum room because it was also much more comfortable, including a better sleeping space for Dads / partners. It used to be a chair that did not recline, now it is a chair that folds out into a makeshift bed. You could do much worse spending the night in the hospital. Also of importance to Dads / partners - the wifi is very good. Excellent care was taken of my wife and child; although we don't plan to have more children, we would still recommend this hospital for medical needs. It is also clear that the hospital takes feedback very seriously - we were asked by the heads of basically every department if we had any criticisms or areas of improvement, and several of them mentioned that they had been making some changes in the last couple of years to make patients and guests more comfortable and happy. After our 2016 visit we weren't impressed, and the only reason we came back in 2020 is because my wife loved her doctor and nurse so much and wanted to deliver with them again. I'm so glad we did come back though - it was a completely different and completely wonderful experience for all three of us.

Yelp
GOOD 1. I was able to get accommodations (without any reactions) to gluten-free and dairy-free dinner when I was admitted to the hospital 2. My ER physician advocated for me to stay when the surgeon was ready to dismiss me home 3. My nurse who took care of me advocated for me when I needed it and was amazing!!! BAD 1. The ED was a mess. I was sent from the waiting room, placed into a recliner and after about 1.5 hours I was finally put into a bed. I did finally see a physician who was sympathetic to my pains. However, it took me to throw up into a bag before I was given anything for pain and nausea. Even after, I was not given meds when requested. I had to beg for it. Which I get, opioid crisis in America. I am not a drug seeker...I was in the worst pain in my whole life. 2. Infection control was not evident by at least two nurses. Scrub the damn hub before you inject medication into my veins. The night shift ED needs some lessons on infection control and even attitudes changes. 3. The Ultrasound tech was amazing! He did a better job than the ER nurse and even got me a pillow for the bed I was in. He also explained everything to me and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Overall, I have been here before but not as a patient. The ER was a better experience during that time. I am not sure if this was a fluke or not.

Yelp
Dec 30, 2022, 7:44 PM St David's South Austin Medical Center: "Worst ER in Austin. BP is 184/127 with a resting heart rate of 104. Said my blood sugar was good. IT was actually tested at another ER. It was 341. Doctor refused any pain medication but Tylenol.Said it could be a Fibromyalgia Flair. Still he doesn't believe in treating any pain with anything stronger than OTC Tylenol.Got tired of waiting to be released. I removed my IV and all my equipment. No one even noticed. I will die before I ever step foot in here again. And I hope someday Dr. Knows what pain feels like. And they dismiss him the way they did me and my pain. " - Barbara

Yelp
WORST EVER. DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU ARE DYING! Horrible experience and it was never ending. Waited for hours in the ER for them to offer no diagnosis or help. They did a CTA scan to my entire body without giving me an option or an idea of costs. Sending new bills for months rather than 1 bill with everything listed. Predatory business practices whether you are insured or not.

Yelp
My mother was taken by ambulance to the er, and after leaving messages for any update regarding her condition and being assured the nurse would call me back i called back. After repeatedly again being transferred I got my moms nurse and was getting information. We explained being out of town we couldn't come and she began telling us the situation only to be interrupted by Ray a nurse who was ABSOLUTELY TJE RUDEST PERSON WHO HAS NO BUSINESS BEING A NURSE OR EMPLOYED BY ANY HOSPITA. He took the phone and out of no where told me I needed to come to the hospital for anymore information due to hippa. The previous nurse obtained permission from my mother. We tried to explain we were out of town and he hung up the phone. Ray is a poor representation of your facility. I will be sharing this post on social media and asking others to do the sam. st. David's this sucks. my mom is in icu. smh

Yelp
If you want to be stuck in a hallway for hours with nobody checking on you before you're sent home with no real testing based on your looks - by all means, choose St David's. I have had major disruptive pain for weeks and my doctor sent me to the ER so they could more quickly perform an MRI and ultrasound. St Davids was humiliating. I have very long dreadlocks and was told by the nurse that I smoke too much pot and to go home as the dr refused to perform any tests beyond blood and urine. The kicker? I don't smoke regularly nor lately. I was left in a hallway next to other patients in the hallways - with lines of empty rooms behind us, all the way down the hall and around the corner. Shameful. I went in feeling terrible and left feeling far more terrible. I am extremely disappointed in St Davids.

Yelp
These are hard working, thorough folks! They don't mess around! While I was waiting to be called back (which didn't take very long), the person checking folks in came from around her office area and went to the front door where a very elderly lady was sitting. She asked the lady (in the kindest voice imaginable) if she was there to see a doctor. (I couldn't hear the lady's response.) Then the woman asked, "Would you like to come wait inside? It's more comfortable." It was so dear. So compassionate. The lady's son and daughter-in-law arrived moments later. I really liked the doc who treated me. Thorough, discerning, and compassionate.

Yelp
Great hospital, helpful and friendly staff that know what they're doing! We drive from Manor to St David's South Austin Medical because we love this hospital. Amanda, if you're reading this, thanks for being a great nurse, and I hope you're having a good day. Make that tik tok!

Yelp
What a NIGHTMARE. The ER staff are just OKAY but they are SO SO slow. They almost seemed to not even care about their patience. I was extremely in pain and uncomfortable and they made me sit and wait for HOURS AND HOURS for NO REASON. They knew it was making me upset- and made me wait LONGER and then threatened to kick me out and reprocess me and charge me an additional 5000$ for literally just administrating some medicine lol- and they had it ordered but made me sit there for hours while pitter pattering around. It was extremely unbelievable- then I tried to talk to one of the doctors about how rude the nurse was and she of course took the nurses side, and acted like I was being rude for simply asking what was taking so long. Really sad to see such rude people working at an ER where people really need help. They must be understaffed and have to deal with terrible manigement for them to be this rude.

Yelp
3rd time sutured by St. Dave, but first time South. In and out, stitches and all, within an hour. Staff all pleasant & professional. Hard to write this review w/ one hand outta commission, but I had to share my good experience.

Yelp
My husband was transported to this hospital from another ER in Bastrop. When he arrived they had his room ready and staff were there to help immediately. He was there a couple of days before surgery since he was stable. The staff communicated throughout the process and when it was time for surgery they communicated everything. The surgeon even drew a diagram and wrote what the procedure was so we could look in to it if we wanted. His surgery went great and the next floor he went to was IMC. A step down from ICU. The staff was amazing. They kept him comfortable and made a point to even check on me. They always smiled and made us feel at home. He has since been sent home and is healing great. We know where to go if we need anything along his healing process. Thank you all for such a great experience!

Deborah L.

Yelp
The ER front desk act like they hate their job. The bigger concern is I have POA of my husband who has MS and dementia beginning stages. They completely disregarded that and left me sitting in the waiting room after he brought in by ambulance. The fact that they are doing any treatment without me is quite frankly illegal because he has a hard time understanding what they are saying. He has processing issues and often doesn't understand. The front desk needs to have it explained to them the legality of a POA. I suggest someone at the hospital inform them before they get sued.

Yelp
It takes a very long time but people were nice. Very busy and unpredictable wait times...
