London's Top 8 Wonders in 2018

"The church of St.Dunstan-in-the-East has survived a lot during its 900-year history, including the Great Fire of London in 1666. An English parish church located halfway between the Tower of London and the London Bridge, it was originally built during Norman times. Although the Great Fire caused terrible damage to the church it was faithfully rebuilt, and topped with a steeple designed by Sir Christopher Wren.  But in 1941, the church was devastated by the Blitz. A direct hit destroyed everything apart from the north and south walls, and Wren’s steeple. The threat of German invasion of the United Kingdom had ended with the Battle of Britain a year earlier, but the sustained strategic bombing of the UK continued. By 1941, the Blitz was reaching its terrible crescendo. Starting on September 7th, 1940, London was bombed for nearly 60 consecutive nights. The night of December 29th saw the most ferocity, as the Luftwaffe blanketed London with bombs in what was called the Second Great Fire of London.  By the end of the Blitz, over 1,000,000 London homes were destroyed, including much of the old Saxon church. After the war, with much of London in rubble, the slow rebuilding process began. But St. Dunstan-in-the-East remained in ruins. In 1967, the City of London Corporation decided to turn the bombed out shell of the church into a public garden, which remains to this day. Hidden away on a secluded side street, and long since dwarfed by the modern steel and chrome structures of the city, it remains one of London’s secret gardens. One of the last Blitz-damaged buildings left in the United Kingdom, overgrown with trees, ivy, and wall climbing flowers growing amongst the ruined arches, it’s a poignant living memorial to the horrors of the Blitz and a testament to the resilience of the City of London which survived it." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A peaceful hidden gem in the heart of London. The ruins of a bombed-out church have been beautifully transformed into a tranquil garden with vines, trees, and stone arches. Great spot to relax, take photos, or enjoy a quiet moment. Free entry and worth a visit if you're nearby. Would recommend going early on the morning as it can become too crowded to take good pictures.

St Dunstan in the East Church Garden is one of London’s most beautiful hidden gems. Tucked away between modern office buildings near Tower Hill, this ruined church-turned-garden offers a peaceful escape from the city’s fast pace. The remains of the old stone walls, archways, and Gothic windows, now draped in ivy and surrounded by lush greenery, create a setting that feels almost magical—like stepping into a secret garden. Originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt after the Great Fire of London, the church was later bombed during the Blitz in World War II. Instead of being demolished, the ruins were preserved and transformed into a public garden in the 1970s. The blend of history and nature gives the space a haunting but peaceful atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for quiet reflection, reading a book, enjoying lunch, or just taking a break from the noise of the city. You’ll often see people sitting on benches, soaking in the tranquility or admiring the way nature has gently reclaimed the old stone. Whether you’re a Londoner looking for a moment of calm or a visitor wanting to experience something unique and off the beaten path, St Dunstan in the East is well worth a visit.

A surprising bonus on a walk around some of the lesser known sites of London. We came across St Dunstan whilst walking and what a beautiful and unexpected find. Basically this is an old church ,in disrepair , but still a beautifully well preserved stone building ,and the gardens have been allowed to grow through it , in it and over it . It is genuinely lovely inside and so peaceful. There are benches in the main open area where visitors were just sat chatting ,and many squirrels running around and going about their business. There was even a newly married couple having some photos taken in a lovely setting. Definitely well worth a visit.

The small garden in the st Dunstan in the East church is so peaceful, as my visit it was late in the afternoon. The church it was built around 1100 and is Grade 1 listed building. The church it was built by the famous Christopher Wren after the Great fire of London in 1631. The garden is free to visit and if you are in the area do make a point of visiting this small oasis i the middle of the city. Is open from 8.00 am to 7.00 pm. For photography or filming you need to obtain a licence.

What a lovely, atmospheric place this is. Beautifully planted, calm and quiet. We even saw a squirrel. I plan to do some paintings of it from the photos I took. It was a peaceful place to pause for a deep calming breath before launching back into the madness.

Really pretty hidden garden in London. Brilliant to sit in on a sunny day. There are lots of benches and a couple of different areas to sit in. It is a little overcrowded because so many people are taking photos, but that can also be entertaining because you see some very interesting people walking around.

Hidden oasis tucked away in the middle of the city, the ruins have stood the test of time. Rich in history and significance, St. Dunstan’s was originally built around 1100, damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, and then again in the Blitz in 1941. The city decided against rebuilding and turned it into a park. It’s a beautiful garden and magical landscape with old stone walkways in and around the walls and empty windows which are covered in greenery and surrounded by flowers. It’s more of a courtyard than a park in terms of size but the way the daylight filters through the empty windows is like something out of a movie and almost cinematic around sunrise and sunset. There’s a fountain in the courtyard and there are benches throughout the park to sit and enjoy the peaceful and serene surroundings. It’s the perfect place to sit and reflect, read, write or have a bite with friends. It would also be a great spot for engagement or family photos. As a tourist, I highly recommend visiting this place if you’re in the area and make it a stop if you’re heading to Leadenhall Market, Tower of London, Sky Garden.

I was so excited to visit after I read about this on Atlas Obscura. These are just phone photos, but my good camera caught some incredible images. The history is incredible, and so poignant. I love that London made this a memorial garden to both the Great Fire and the Blitz, as it is haunting and ethereal. My daughter is something of a Blitz afficianado at age 14, and so this was incredibly interesting to her, too. So unique, free, and well worth the visit.
