Portland Vegan-Friendly Ice Cream Shop St. Francis Opens in Foster-Powell | Eater Portland

"I watched Mike Mello and Nate VanDeventer, who live nearby and who opened Thunderbird Bar in 2017, open St. Francis Ice Cream in late December in a small storefront in the historic For Mrs. Noble building as a family-friendly complement to the neighborhood’s adult-oriented options. The shop slings rotating dairy and vegan scoops — about 10 dairy flavors and five vegan flavors on average — with offerings that range from mango habanero and strawberry cheesecake to vanilla peanut butter, lemon marionberry, and ube on the dairy side, and ginger snap cookie and strawberry swirl among the vegan options. Their vegan base uses gluten-free oat milk and coconut cream to better mimic dairy fat, and Dream Bird’s vegan chocolate chip cookie dough appears in both dairy and vegan forms; Mello and VanDeventer spent three months of trial and error developing the recipes. They prioritized pops of color and “happy vibes” in the design, and plan to combine the Dream Bird cookies with ice cream for sandwiches and have fresh cookies available, which ties back to their collaboration with Dream Bird. The shop’s name pays homage to a San Francisco diner that has personal meaning for the owners." - Janey Wong

vegan options are like jelly that hasn't quite set right. Photos are from first 5 min of at 70 degree day. Should not peel when scooping. Is it tapioca gone wrong? not sure. Both chocolate and raspberry had same issue. Ice cream with dairy did not have those issues. The dairy eaters found the chocolate and decaf coffee flavors really smooth and flavorful. So, it really depends on what your there for. Atmosphere is great. Customer service is spot on. If they can figure out the vegan ice cream I'd be a regular. Will come back just in case this is a fluke batch.

Google
St. Francis Ice cream is the new spot on the block. Wonderful simple vibe inside with great flavor options. We visited for the first time and were able to try several different great flavors. They make their waffle cones in house. I loved the caramel Oreo ice cream. I got the regular scoop in a cup which was a solid portion size with decent pricing. They do offer affogato and milkshake options which I’d love to try sometime. Certainly recommend trying this place.

Google
Don’t buy into the high ratings, the ice cream and the customer service were not great to say the least. The ice cream: The vegan chocolate ice cream has the consistency of slime. Vegan ice cream/ non-dairy ice cream doesn’t have to be this bad. The Caramel brownie had almost no caramel but it was hard to tell, because I made the mistake of getting their waffle cone which had so much cinnamon in it that was inedible. Don’t get the waffle cone! The service: I’m grateful this place employs young people, I started working at 13 myself. However, the two people there were poorly trained with customer service and efficiency. They ignored customers besides myself and the person I was with. When ordering from them this one girl was so busy looking at a dog (which I get) that she didn’t know what I ordered and I had to repeat myself. They also made fun of customers for calling the ice cream “vegan” out loud to customers who were ordering it. Announcing that they could just call it “dairy-free”. Just really weird vibes all around. I almost never leave reviews but this place isn’t worth your money and there’s tons of much better ice cream all over Portland. Go somewhere else!

Google
Just your cute little local neighborhood ice cream shop. Love the vibes and flavors here. They do split scoops and I got the strawberry matcha and raspberry cheesecake, which I loved! Their icecream are not overly sweet unlike most, and some of the fruit flavored ones have a wonderful natural tart, sourness, and sweetness to them!

Google
Awesome little ice cream spot! Not a huge selection but super friendly staff and very tasty ice cream!

Google
This shop is darling, and I've loved watching it become a local favorite in the neighborhood. It's a young business, so there aren't dozens of flavors available, but it's clear that each one is really thought through. They also hire lots of neighborhood kids, which is so nice for the community. Can't wait to see what else they come up with this Summer! I'm hoping for their take on a cookie dough ice cream.

Been here a couple times now and been very pleasant. Really enjoy this place. Feels old school. They cover the basics really well plus a few interesting flavors. Lots of vegan flavors too although we’ve never tried them. Def recommend this place

Google
Super friendly staff. Good ice cream ( not sure if it’s tillamook like the containers say or made by them). The downside is the servings are ridiculously small. I’d rather go a little out of my way to get more bang for my buck

Yelp
St. Francis hit her Like rain on her back Chill down her spine Goosebumps no turning back She hid around corners Confetti red She killed it with Chocolate And from it she fled With every Waffle She sang with a Cone And washed it down With Cookie Dough The dog days are colder Re-treat from the sun The Ice Cream is coming Mango Habanero Vegan Run fast for The Machine Run fast for Florence Run for your Pixie For your Marionberry Leave all your love And your longing behind You can't carry it with you If you want to survive The dog days are colder Re-treat from the sun Follow St. Francis 'Cause Ice Cream is yum

Yelp
The 4 star rating is for the service we received. We love custard, but when it's solidified into a hard ice cream, it loses all of its luster. The flavors, price, and atmosphere are okay, but the service shines!

Yelp
I have been multiple times and it's great! A lot of different flavors. Nice to finally have a neighborhood Ice Cream shop!

Yelp
Cute new ice cream shop in the neighborhood and you know I had to be one of the first there! There flavors are soooo good. I had a split scoop of a regular size, 1/2 cookies and cream and 1/2 coffee. It was delicious. They also have vegan flavors and the staff let you try whatever you want! I can't wait to become a regular. Sweet vibes .... Get it!

Yelp
The ice cream is so good. Lots of custards and vegan option. Do not miss the waffle cone. We had the chocolate and Carmel custard and the Marion berry custard. Both were so good. They also have cookie dough to go

Yelp
This is a new addition to the hood. It is the first stage of the takeover from the hemp milk bar that used to occupy the building on the corner of Foster & 63rd. The ice cream is fabulous and we can't wait for the bar and restaurant to open this spring.

Yelp
We were warmly greeted by both the young lady and gentleman. My wife had the Coffee flavor, and I had Cookies 'n Cream. Both tasted great, but the reason I'm writing the review is the waffle cone. Their scent was in the air as we entered, and simply the best cone I've ever put in my pie hole. Do yourself a favor and give them a try!

Yelp
The customer service was great and the samples were basically half a scoop! very inviting environment and will definitely be visiting again!
