12 Destination-Worthy Farmers Markets in Northern California | Eater

"Like the town itself, this Friday morning market is a hidden gem filled with local artisans, produce, and cuisine. The prepackaged food sold here is as local as the produce: One booth sells red wine vinegar made from a local zinfandel while another sources its honey from Napa wildflowers. Community services are also integrated into the market, including educational seminars, chef demos, and plenty of programs for kids. Grab a bite to go and stroll through Crane Park for a true local feel." - Vox Creative

This seasonal market offers an array of food both proteins, and fresh vegetables and fruits as well as prepared food through various local growers and vendors. I think the last market for the 2022 season was this past Friday 10/28/22 but I may be wrong. Be sure to check before heading out.

Small but wide variety of produce, prepared food and crafts. Coffee and baked goodies can be eaten in a redwood grove, often with entertainment or cooking demos

The first St. Helena Farmers’ Market was held Main Street, across from the Merryvale Winery. It moved to its current location at Crane Park in 1996, where it continues to operate every Friday morning from May through October. Angwin resident Sheila Mannix often visited farms and orchards near St. Helena in search of the sweetest vine-ripened tomato and freshest greens. When she realized that other like-minded people in the Napa Valley shared her passion for high-quality produce and her frustration at not being able to find it, she decided to organize a local Farmers’ Market. The mission of the St. Helena Farmers’ Market is to bring the finest fresh produce, crafts, specialty food and other items and services to local residents and visitors, while providing a social gathering place and educational resource for the community that promotes good nutrition and a healthy life style. Depending on when you visit, you will find a variety of certified organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables, farm eggs, nuts, cheese, meat, olive oils and fresh flowers. Some vendors offer locally made crafts such as jewelry, knitted and leather items. The Market’s General Store offers a large variety of adult, kid and infant merchandise featuring the Market’s beloved Tractor Logo and the winning artwork from the Annual School Healthy Art Competition. Other vendors offer prepared foods such as tamales and baked goods. We also have a fresh fish vendor to complement the agricultural products for sale. You will also be able to watch a Chef’s Demonstration at the Chef’s Table, listen to a Lecture at the Market’s Classroom, support a Local Non-Profit Organization, take the kids to the Kids’ Story Time and listen to music from local Musicians.

Gorgeous farmers' market with beautiful produce, specialty foods, local artisan gifts with a coffee and pastry bar, picnic area, children's play ground, live music in a city park surrounded by hills and vineyards. Held at Crane Park in St. Helena on Friday mornings 8-1 May thru October.

Neat little market. It seems like there's more "food truck" style stalls [BBQ, bakeries, hummus, Mexican food, green smoothies that claim to cure cancer, loose leaf tea] than produce, but most of it is reasonably priced for being in the Napa Valley.

Yelp
I recently stopped by the St Helena Farmer's Market while traveling between Clear Lake State Park and Brannan Island State Park. (To be real, I wanted a burger from Gott's, but they weren't open yet.) The market was on the smaller side, with maybe about twenty active booths. It was much smaller than the farmers markets I'm used to in the Sacramento area, but much larger than the 4-booth market in Yosemite Valley. The best decision I made was ordering a ham and Swiss croissant from the pastry booth. Sadly, I don't remember the name of the booth, but it was the best croissant I've ever had in my life. (I think it was West Won Bread, unless it was Patisserie Angelica Sebastopol.) A slightly less wise decision was ordering the strawberry shortcake from the cooking school. The student, who did not give off any kind of competent vibe, whispered to the order-taker, "How do I make that?" She quickly recited, "biscuit, whipped cream, lemon curd, berries." I mean, the photo really speaks for itself. There was less than like two tablespoons worth of chopped berries, and the top of the biscuit was not covered in curd. The flavor was all there, but the presentation and portion sizes were not. Then again, this was a cooking school, so maybe some mistakes are to be expected. I wouldn't have ordered from them if I wasn't willing to take the risk. Even though this is a small market, the quality of the vendors is on the supremely artisan side. Definitely worth stopping by for a bite to eat if you're in the area. (Also a great brunch option.)

Yelp
Awesome farmers market on fridays in Napa valley! We stayed close by so this was super convenient to go to. Amazing product, prepared foods and other goods. We got fresh strawberries, peaches, cherries, sugar snap peas, hummus, coffee, donuts, pizza and a shaved ice

Yelp
I honestly love this little farmer's market. There is usually a good variety of items for sale from some great vendors. I always seem to find some really good fresh vegetables and fruits, flowers and pre-made food to bring home. Today I scored golden beets, carrots, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, cherries and a bouquet of sweet peas. I left happy!

Yelp
We stopped in here on a recent trip to Napa Valley. This farmer's market was larger than I expected with so many nice tables. We still had a few days left of our vacation, but were leaving Napa Valley that morning. I couldn't buy any produce to stuff in my suitcase, but the produce all looked fantastic. There were beautiful flowers as well. We had already eaten breakfast, but you could have easily had breakfast here. There were some tables with crafts and I did buy a few things to tuck in my suitcase to bring home. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect at first. Foolishly perhaps, I assumed this was something created with Napa Valley tourists in mind, surely not a real farmers' market. I was, as I often am, entirely wrong. The Saint Helena market, which takes place in Crane Park every Friday from May through October (7:30am-noon), is the real deal. Real food. Real people. Real fun for all. And it is adjacent to a spectacular, head-trained Petite Sirah and Cabernet clones vineyard, one of the prettiest in all of Napa wine country: the Bourne Vineyard (like the nearby Dr. Crane Vineyard, it is currently managed as a Beckstoffer Heritage vineyard). And great BBQ. And seafood. And baked goods, Even face painting for the kids and bocce for the adults. An immensely attractive Aston Martin DB11 V12 coupe (perhaps belonging to market sponsor and cult winemaker, Bill H.) was sunning itself in the farmers' market parking lot, along with too many Range Rovers and Jaguars to count. Even if you're only here for the sightseeing, it's hard to see how you'd not find this spot worth checking out. 99.9% of wine country tourists never stop here to shop and people watch. That is their loss, not yours. You are Yelp Elite (or aspire to be at any rate). You seek out adventure. You live for hidden gems and backroads and blue highways. You will end up coming here, for the Woodhouse smoked brisket and the baked goods and the vineyard views and the cutthroat bocce matches. And you will take your market fare with you to picnic in wine country and you will be proud to have lived like a local here, if only for a day!

Yelp
St. Helena Farmers Market is a quaint little farmers market that boasts tons of treasures from the St. Helena, Napa Valley, Calistoga, and surrounding areas. The market is held typically on Fridays, starting at 7:30 a.m. Here's my highlights: 1. Fresh Seafood (Salmon, snapper, clams, oysters, tuna, etc). 2. Fun Herbal and Caffinated teas - dry or iced teas. Basil Seed extra. 3. Vegan / Gluten Free pasteries 4. Meadow fresh honey 5. Nectarines, peaches, & plums. 6. Local home-made salads. 7. Kettle Korn (favorite of many). Also has caramel and cheese corn. 8. Local pottery from artisan potters 9. Story-Telling for kids 10. Shaved ice and lemonaid 11. fresh Peppers ($6/lb) - jalapeno, New Mexico style Hatch, Anaheim, Serano. 12. Flavored almonds. 13. Jewelry made by local artisans. Prices are a little high here, but I guess that is what you can expect to get fresh quality items. Example - peaches $3/lb, chiles $6/lb, jars of honey $10-12. Yet, there are some very reasonably priced items. There is tons of parking, as long as you are willing to walk a bit. People can be a bit aggressive when looking for parking. There are two nice playground areas for the kiddos to run around in. There's a skateboard park for the older kids, and lawn bowling for the more seasoned folks. Fun for all!

Yelp
This is a really great local farmers market. The day we were there they had a cooking demonstration which was really interesting. This farmers market offers a wide array of local goods. They have local organic fruits, vegetables, eggs, soaps and even some clothing options. We had a nice time walking around and browsing, although we didn't purchase anything. There is a great playground close by if you have children.

Yelp
This place is a great stop on Friday mornings, but especially for those who have young kids! The market is right next to a really nice school playground, a small skatepark, and also offered friendly educational activities, and puppet shows at the same time- a big plus if you need to do some grocery shopping while you have the little ones with you. If you haven't been, come early! It opens up at 7:30am, so know that the later you come, the less selection you'll have (duh). Some stuff does go on sale though for those late snoozers (like me), but hey, try and set the alarm so you can come check this place out in its prime. It isn't a huge market, but its got a great variety for it's size. Here's a rough note of what I saw while strolling through the vendor stands: Fresh seafood, sea salts, teas, kids activity station, honey, photography services, charitable orginizations, clothing general store, veggies & fruits, coffee, mushrooms, bakeries (breads, pies, sweet pastries, pretzels, macarons, cake balls, cookies, etc) cooking/chef demos, city council, Mexican cuisine (tamales, tortilla chips, etc) pasta, olive oils, jerky, grass fed beef, Afgan cuisine (curry, vegan, pastry, dips, ready-to-eat), African cuisine, cactus plants, composting class, flowers (fresh cut & potted), boutique meat vendors & services, unique jewelry, charms, live music, massage services, cheeses, green/recyclable bags & products, jams, beautiful orchid plants, pearl jewelry, facial care products, metal work, African crafts & baskets, kettle korn popcorn, scarves, knife sharpening, facial care products, etc. You get the idea. Come check it out, and don't forget your cash (some vendors take plastic) & shopping tote!

Yelp
Although this market isn't spectacular, it's comparable in size to Santa Rosa and much bigger than Calistoga. In fact, I was really impressed! At St. Helena's early morning market, there's an emphasis on produce and practical items. Lingering isn't really encouraged, although some people hit the park and bocce courts after they shop. This farmer's market is very much a "week's groceries" market. SF Ferry Building & Marin Civic Center are "Disneyland for foodies" markets. As long as you know and can appreciate the difference, St. Helena FM will make you happy. They have a great, up-to-date website, too. It's refreshingly high-tech for a farmer's market!

Yelp
The St. Helena Farmers Market is quintessential Wine Country Living... You wander through the little aisle between the stands and see a giant fork hanging with pasta strands atop a cart holding the exquisite homemade dry pasta that looks almost too beautiful to eat. A little further and there are lovely pillows filled with the softest down and fun prints that you know will take your living room/bed/corner-chair to a whole new level. Turn and try unique salt from the Philippines that the owners herald that it is used by the chef at French Laundry. Add to that fresh produce and beautiful weather... What more could you ask for?

Yelp
For a small town, this is an especially great farmer's market. They have a great variety of booths that sells veggies and fruits, a few meat stalls, and other crafts things. The thing that I couldn't say no to was the prepared food stalls. The samosas that I got for lunch were so good, and a bought a little extra for dinner, which was also delicious. Definetly comeing back for friday lunches.

Yelp
From 7:30 to noon on Fridays, from May through October, you can find John Raymond and his delicious cheeses and whatever's being harvested that week, which this week was figs, fresh-picked corn, dry-farmed (and supersweet) tomatoes, basil, and berries, lots of berries (strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries), all delicious. There also are all the normal upscale goodies that are at farmers' markets these days: breakfast, breads, coffee, music. It's a small market, but it's good.

Yelp
Every Friday morning from May through October locals flock to get the freshest produce, prepared foods, and great seafood. Weekly programs include chef's demos, book signings, and the popular market classroom where kids can learn about fresh produce and sustainable farming. Always lots of fun!
