The Best French Restaurants in Portland, Oregon - Eater Portland

"A boulangerie with multiple locations around town, St. Honoré offers quick and casual, deliciously golden pastries. Those looking for more filling fare can find salads and sandwiches, but the real treasures are the pastries, with croissants and brioche tasting like they came straight from the ovens of a 19th century provencal baker. The canelé, delicate little baked custards in a shell of hard sugar, are a particular treat. The casual, counter service nature of these cafes make it easy to choose your own adventure when visiting St. Honoré, whether you’re grabbing a sandwich on the go or lingering with a laptop for a while." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Katrina Yentch

Nice selection and variety of pastries and drinks. The pastries/croissants would have been better if warmed a little before serving. The eclairs were different flavors, but they each tasted the same - not great. The staff were really nice. The art details are lovely, and the ambiance relaxing. Everything was clean, and the bakery smelled lovely.

Came here with my family on Memorial Day with my family, we’re from CA. The employee who helped us was really nice and helpful. Their quiche Lorraine was delicious (although I’m not a fan of the horseradish salad dressing). We also tried the four cheese bread, bacon and maple croissant, and almond croissant, which were all amazing. I highly recommend this place!

sisi Cosmic Chariot

Google
The food looks great, the mini croissant was ok. The apple turnover was mediocre. The quiche had a too little egg custard filling compared with too much pie crust and the crust was very dull, non buttery and dried and not fresh. Not worth the price. I wouldn’t go back.

Google
decently yummy pastries and desserts; service was quite quick. i think i got my cafe au lait in under a minute, and it was yummy and as smooth as i expected i tried a slice of opera cake. it was tasty, but not mind-blowin'ly so. there's a fair amount of indoor seatin'.

Google
I had really high hopes for this place, but it was just ok. The croissant was too soft, the sandwich was hella small for 15 dollars, and service was curt. They dont bring anything to your table, and you have to bus your own dishes.

Thumper Vamp

Google
Absolutely adorable bakery and coffee shop thr lavender fog was delicious and the sandwich was fantastic. The prices are a little high but the staff is fantastic. I'd love to go back and try more

Google
Impromptu visit suggested by family who live locally and was very impressed. Planned on just getting a coffee and one pastry but couldn’t resist trying more. The quiche mushroom and leek was one of the best ones I’ve ever had. The provenance panini was simple but flavorful. The honey mocha took awhile to get but was worth the wait. As for pastries: the canelé, Black Forest, and gâteau au chocolat were melt in your mouth delicious. However, the chassons au pommes were too flaky and broke apart quickly which made it too hard to eat. Very few and small tables made it hard to relax and eat but the food was worth it. Next time we will get it to go. The staff members were pleasant and eager to answer any questions.

I preordered a Galette des Rois for pickup. I lived in France for a few years, so I was really excited to get to celebrate this tradition with my family here in the US. The galette was delicious. The crust was well done, with plenty of flakiness and buttery goodness. There was a nice layer of marzipan in the middle. We did not choose to cut the bottom to put in the feve, but instead we just snuck it into my kid's piece while he was distracted. He is two, so this was an easy thing to do. He absolutely loved finding the feve, which was a little porcelain pitcher marked 'lait'. He insists on calling it his 'petit coffee'. The crown has also been a fun touch and again my kid put his spin on it by insisting that he was 'la reine'. It was so wonderful to make memories with the family and to eat a delicious pastry. While waiting in line to pickup, I looked around a bit and was impressed by their selection of patisseries and viennoiseries. I purchased one salted carmel macaron to try - it was delightful! Such a flavorful little morsel with excellent texture. Fun fact - macarons were first made in Nancy, France by 'Les Soeurs Macarons'. I will definitely be back to try more.

Yelp
If you're like me and love European cafes, this is the place for you! Delicious food and a very friendly staff. I love that they change the pastries/desserts every day- it makes for a fun variety.

Yelp
Stopping in at St Honore Boulangerie was originally an odd, but ultimately deeply satisfying experience. When I first walked in, there were no customers inside and yet a bunch of people working behind the counter. I started to look around and there appeared to be plenty of beautiful french pastries in the cases, to a point where I was unable to make a decision. I had headed in initially to pick up an almond croissant to go, but once there, I was drawn to the large tray of cannelle, the pistachio croissants and then...the small orange cake. After a bit, I bought the orange cake and headed to their outside seating, just as the place was filling up, no joke, by the time I sat down, there was a line for the counter. Anyway, the cake was so good, filled with orange flavor and zest, buttery like a pound cake, yet light and airy. I brought the rest back to the group who were also struck with the excellence of this cake.

Yelp
Not at all what I remember. Terrible service. Smelled like stale mop water inside. It was dirty, trash all over. Yuck. The pastry we ordered was good but we ordered French onion soup for there and instead it was packaged to go. When I asked about how long it was taking the server pointed to the bag on the counter and said it had been sitting there for 10 minutes. We were actually glad at that point to get it to go because the mop water smell was gag worthy. Sadly the soup was not good. It was so sweet, thin just not worth it.

Yelp
Decadent. Calming music with herringbone floors, the sound of people working in the back and people walking past the large windows. The almond croissant was crispy, and not overly sweet or drenched in syrup. It was light and lovely with the added crunch of the almonds. The Kouign-amann was also good. There was a layer of hard candies sugar on the Outside, but salty goodness on the inside. You can taste the quality butter that's used and the layers add another enjoyment to your palette. It's a nice place to chill and read a book. The staff were also friendly.

Yelp
This place is right by our house, and I walk by multiple times a week, and all always have this urge to grab a bite here. On multiple occasions I have stopped in, and I feel let down. We always get the Croques which are loved by myself and my kids. But I feel like I often get different items here and I'm never impressed. Recently I got the breakfast Panini and paid seven dollars for bread and cheese, and an additional three dollars for some bacon. There were two slices of bacon in it that were fatty and chewy, and not what I would've enjoyed on a breakfast sandwich!

Yelp
Wonderful bakery. Amazing selection of pastries. We're regular customers. HOWEVER, multiple times (at least 5) I've shown up at 7 when they claim to be open, and their cases are bare. Why not open later, when you're ready to serve?

Yelp
Mediocre deli fast food quality for such an amazing location! My friend and I were sadly disappointed because we were looking forward to make this out new frequent spot after checking out their menu. Service was super confusing! You either offer self serve or you serve us. They were so inconsistent on how and where we could pick up our food. They gave us our cold pastries first, but those needed to be warm were left sitting at the other end of the order counter when they were done without no one calling our names or number. So by the time we asked for them, they were to cold. Casual cafe feel with cramped sitting tables so you would hear everyone's conversations. We got two of their daily soup and saw the back staff pulled them out of a typical to go container to heated them up. At this point, we were even more confused how long ago they were made in-house or they got their soup from elsewhere. Both tomatoes bisque and minestrone were salty and watery. We each had one spoon and they went straight to the trash area right around the corner of our table. They gave us the wrong soup at first. The side kitchen area was full of carts and trays so we know they bake something there. Yet, after our abundance order we just didn't what they made in-house and what were not. We will not be back nor recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
One of my favorite bakeries to visit every time I'm in Portland. I recommend getting a bag of Chouquettes(12 pieces of sugary/fluffy puffs) and the orange Gateau(tastes like a citrusy cake). The mushroom danish was warm and savory. They also have many Fog drinks here, I loved the Autumn Fog.

Yelp
I went yesterday and had their Brie Bartlett panini! It was a little expensive for the size of the meal but it tasted incredible. I also grabbed a pastry and some tea, again, a little expensive, but very delicious.

Yelp
St. Honore on Division- great staff wonderful pastries. Enjoy occasional live music from a great guitar player and singer who knows all the classics. Sit by a window and take in the scene on Division. But don't look down. The place needs shut down for a deep cleaning. The tracks for the big windows are seething with filth. The bathroom too is bad. Really how a 5 becomes a 1. Too bad.

Yelp
Love the chocolate cake anytime of year. Extra special at Valentines. Picked it up on Valentine's Day and before lunch time had only three left. Non Valentines they are round with no cream fresh and berries but still awesome especially with some whipped cream. The only odd thing was the staff was a bit in their own world. Three of them standing around and took a minute or two before they acknowledged us. Oh can I get something for you. Yes please....

Yelp
I rushed in this bakery last night right before closing to pick up some freshly baked bread (it probably wasn't technically since it was 5pm but better than grocery bread lol). I was surprised by all of the pastries and speciality coffee they had to offer. The bakery looked like I imagine a French one to look like and there were small tables available for dine in. The 3 breads they had left were all gargantuan. I opted for the wheat loaf because I thought it looked smaller than the baguettes but still massive! The picture doesn't do it justice. I ended up freezing most of it because I will never get through it in time. The bread itself is amazing. The employee offered to slice it for me and I'm glad I took her up on the offer! The bread must be a whole wheat sourdough because it tastes like sourdough but with a richer flavor. The crunch is audible, but it's very soft. Would definitely recommend their bread especially if you need a ton!

Yelp
The only reason to go here is to get a pastry to go. Everything else is trash. Lousy service from apathetic staff. It is dirtier than a soup kitchen. Which reminds me don't order the soup. It was without a doubt the worst soup I've had at restaurant that I can remember. There are so many great places to eat in the neighborhood. This used to be one of them.

Yelp
London fog is BOMBDIGGITY. But for whatever reason, the pastries didn't tickle my fancy. ====== The pastries I got seemed pretty standard, which was surprising given the immense smell of butter that smacks you in the face after you open the door. I gotta get my fat on when I explore new cities, and where better to do it than a bakery. $17 for a London fog, chocolate croissant, butter croissant, and and kouign amann. Croissant This was whatever. I would have preferred it to be more buttery, but it tasted similar to a Costco version, just less sweet. Chocolate croissant This one I liked a bit more, but nothing home to write about. Kouign amann The caramel later on top was too thick/sweet for me. The best kouign amann is still b patisserie (San Francisco) London fog Despite these pastries, what I did enjoy about this shop was that they enabled me to find a very good tea. The Earl grey they use is from Smith teamaker, founded in Portland. It is SOSOSOSOSOOOO fragrant. Normally, Earl grey is already good - but this is a whole nother level. This was definitely one of the best London fogs I've ever had in my life. Thank you for using this tea and helping me find something I love!

Yelp
What a wonderful boulangerie! We needed somewhere delicious for lunch and found this quaint and wonderful place. Fresh sandwiches, paninis, pastries and desserts everywhere, but You got a hurry because they go fast... So I chose the brie Bartlette Panini, A bacon and cheese quiche and for dessert a moist and refreshingly tasty gâteau. You can really taste the Brie in the panini and I like that as I'm a brie lover. As for the quiche, crispy crust and a soft and bacon flavored inside and it's a nice portion too. The gâteau was surprisingly moist and soft and you can really taste the orange zest inside of it and it tasted so good that every bite goes down well with coffee. The manager used to be a neighbor too, from what my father mentioned, and would give leftover desserts that we're gonna be thrown out to my family which I wish I would've been here for... So jealous now.

Yelp
I don't come here very often, but a friend was in town so we stopped here for an early lunch. We shared the quiche lorraine and the quiche jardiniere - one with bacon, onions & emmental cheese the other was mushrooms, leeks & goat cheese. I really enjoyed the flavor of both; the crust and ingredients of both were delicious. I liked that it is served with a side of mixed greens, which not sure what the dressing was that came with it, but I really liked it. Next time though, need to try some of the amazing pastries that they make!

Yelp
When I really want to splurge and I'm in the neighborhood I often sneak by this bakery! Highly recommend getting a cinnamon roll early in the morning with cream cheese frosting, it is one of the greatest ways to start your day! The drinks are also wonderfully made, and there's usually not a long line of folks waiting in the morning to get their pastries and drinks. My only piece of feedback is that I wish the prices were a little bit more realistic for folks like me. Over the past year or so I've noticed the prices increase in certain items, which is absolutely understandable. It's just a shame to see the prices increase so quickly and in such an extreme way. Still, this place is worth a visit!

Yelp
A nice boulangerie with very nice dessert options. Try a kouignammon ("Queen-amon") a bun with carmelized sugar and sea salt or a dessert-like hazelnut dacquiose, which I preferred on our visit. Try a sandwich or even a salad here. The sandwiches Tun around 12.50, and they are very "to go" style (wrapped in butcher paper). The quality of the ingredients should never be of concern here, even as sometimes the price might be. Pretend like it's still 1999: Have a pastry and an artisan coffee and read the paper. Service was no-nonsense, no smiles, no fuss. Got right to your order and moved on.

Yelp
Dropped by this location of St. Honore and of course, had to leave with a ton of pastries. I think I'm hovering at a 3.5 but rounded up to a 4.0 given the wonderful variety of sweet and savory options. We decided to order online to expedite the process and went with a croissant, kouign amann, seasonal fruit pastry, onion roll, and mushroom croustade. Pick up was slightly rocky as I was only given half my order when I dropped in and had to head back in to get the rest of it -- check your stuff before you leave! I was also a little irked that they were out of the onion roll and replaced it with a fendu/plain roll without prior notice. The croissant was exactly what I was craving -- flaky and buttery without being too sweet. The kouign amann was a tad bit less good because the caramelized top was just waaay too sweet for me. And this is coming from a girl with a huge sweet tooth. The fendu roll was fine -- it was a regular bread roll so hard for that to be bad. The star of the show was the savory mushroom croustade which was just delicious. Highly recommend all their croustades if you drop by! Now the real disappointment was the seasonal fruit tart with almond cream. Gosh idk how something can be so bland as a dessert. It wasn't particularly sweet and our seasonal fruit was a peach which didn't really have much of a taste. Neither me nor my partner liked this AT ALL. St. Honore is a good bakery with a great variety of options. However, it feels mildly hit or miss when it comes to the pastries. This location is on a popular, crowded street and street parking can be be a bit tough. Like I said -- I'm at a 3.5 but rounded up to a 4.0 so keep that in mind as you find spots to munch away.

Yelp
Looking for delightful food and decadent pastry? You found it! This place is fantastic! Stopped in for brunch and had the Quiche Lorraine which was rich, creamy, and perfectly baked. Also had an Americano, which was delicious. Then, to take home, I got a Kouign Amann, a Chocolate Éclair, a Café Éclair, a Blueberry Lemonade Danish, and a Croissant and everything was absolutely amazing!! This place is just spectacular, great food, very nice staff, and definitely worth making a special trip for brunch or just a few pastries!

Yelp
They treats I got there were amazing. They had gluten free options and the people who were there were so helpful in letting me know their recommendations for my dietary restrictions. We grabbed something quick and left but there were many families there hanging out and eating that gave it a real welcoming feeling.

Yelp
Had the best time with friends here. We sat for hours and laughed in the cafe. It's a great meet up spot. I ordered a danish with blueberry and it was amazing! I definitely recommend their pastries. I also got a tea which was super good as well. I ended up going back and ordering more pastries to take home to my family because it was so good.

Yelp
So Yummy, returned twice during my quick visit to Portland. Got to hotel late in afternoon and was starving. Walked around hotel area and found this spot. I chose the last Brie Bartlet Panini to-go and it was amazing - bonus that there was small green salad. Not in the mood for a big dinner the following night, so I went back for a repeat. The staff were very kind. I also ordered a chocolate croissant to have for breakfast next day, it was fine. Would have been much better warm with a cappuccino or latte. Suggest taking the time to order and sit in the cafe - whether alone or with friends - as it looked comfortable with lots of windows to people watch.

Rayne C.

Yelp
So charming with a gentleman playing the acoustic guitar, beautiful pastries on a stormy afternoon - highly recommend stopping by.

Yelp

Yelp
I come here multiple times a Year because I love your quality of products and a much friendlier atmosphere than Petit Provence but today...Um. What a shame. Your "medium" galette this year is way too small for the price. I come here every year for our galette. What a way to price-gouge your customers. $48 for a tiny 9" pie and obviously it's too small. So let me get a larger pie for $72!!! Really. No thanks. I'll be going somewhere else next year for sure. What a disservice to your loyal customers. Please just be honest and label it as a small.
google avatar

Jay G.

Yelp
Annoyed. Monday morning in March 8:23am and no breakfast sandwiches. Only $4 croissants. Apparently shipped in from a different location. Coming in about an hour he says. Couple stars because he was courteous and the place looked cool.
google avatar

Brandy D.

Yelp
I would live here if they would let me. I am pretty sure I could live on macarons and croissants. I'm definitely willing to risk it. As for what to get here, you can't go wrong with anything. Every little morsel from this place is fantastic and worth every calorie and penny.

Yelp
I finally located St. Honore Boulangerie on Friday (9/27/19), and went in having high hopes. This was the lone bakeshop I ventured to during my brief Portland getaway. However being so late in the day, the pastry case content was getting kind of sparse. And upon entry, it didn't have that signature baked goods scent either. Boulangerie? Patisserie? Viennoiserie? It's essentially a hybrid of all three and for the sake of simplicity. ***Posted when it should've been saved as a DRAFT, to be continued, work in progress. Feeling sleepy.
google avatar

Noel K.

Yelp
I was really hyped for their kouign amann pastry. It's huge, no doubt. I think it's too big to bite into. It's flaky, but I think it was too hard to eat it. It was definitely caramelized, not too sweet. Overall, thought it was okay.
google avatar

Su-jen Y.

Yelp
This place reminds me of boulangeries in Paris. The cheese croustade was amazing. They baked it for us and it was warm, savory and flaky. The other parties look very authentic and smells amazing in the bakery. Can't wait to come back to try other things!
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
Whenever I visit Portland, I try to make time to visit St. Honore to pick up some chouquettes and occasionally some other pastries. I bought two bags this time and was a little disappointed as they were a little harder and dryer than usual. It was almost as if they had been sitting out for too long and had dried out. Most of the time when I make a visit to St. Honore, I leave with delicious baked goods, so I'll probably give them another shot. Or maybe just visit a different location.

Dianna S.

Yelp
Best mini croissant I've ever had. All the pastries looked amazing and friendly service.

Kerrie M.

Yelp
This was once my go-to coffee hang. Unfortunately, the level of cleanliness continues to decline. The bathrooms are dirty and in need of repair. Kitchen items are stored in what used to be dining space. The floor, tables and windows are in need of deep cleaning. The inside trim needs painted and the outside patio needs some attention- The bakery continues to serve only on paper products. The staff is always friendly, but constantly changing. I wish it would return to pre-Covid ambiance. You can be great again with a little effort! I believe in you. Let's get going
google avatar

Vanessa G.

Yelp
This place reminds me of the bakery shops of New Orleans. I know that is derived from France but this location gives me NOLA feels. The smells of fresh bread is what lured me in and although I did peek my head at Salt & Straw because I wanted to have a pastry and ice cream together I just stuck with the better of option and have a seasoned berry tart. The cream base of the tart was almond creme which is very different. Most tarts are made with custard or a lemon tart but this product really did sell me. It actually paired the berries deliciously. The presentation of the tart was good and I ordered a low fat latte and it tasted great. I appreciate the open and honesty my server gave to me about the pastries he hasn't tried and wants to try and it was a refreshing mid day snack. I would definitely come back again and get the coffee and chocolate eclair.
google avatar

Jordan P.

Yelp
"Well known for kouign-Amann", but if that's the start of the sentence then the rest should end...."because it's trash, the laminated dough tastes like paper, and the caramelization is like a thin hard glaze so thin you'd think sugar was the price of saffron". I can recommend their savory pastries unless you like the taste of day old pizza. Just garbage. Go to Jinju for a 300% increase in quality and a discount on price. Everything go ate was an embarrassment and if there hadn't been a dog I wouldn't have had anyone to eat it.

Brandon Y.

Yelp
The food is amazing! The cheese filled turkey croissant is the whole reason to go! A little expensive at $12 but is worth the experience.

Udayan K.

Yelp
This is a nice blend of French (cuisine ?) and Portland. The ambience is more of the relaxed, laidback Portland style, which I like. I did see a map of France and the furniture/fixtures looked... European? But don't ask me about this stuff, let's get back to food. I got a Brie Bartlet Panini. The balsamic vinaigrette isn't my thing but if it's yours, I think it's worth a try. The brie cheese in it was good. I got the Orange Ginger gateau which I liked but might not be for everyone either. The other two pastries : Strawberry Mille Feuilles and Opera were both super. You can get your espresso fix too, plus good for people watching as well, given it is next to Salt & Straw and on Division. I'd check this place out.

Lianna T.

Yelp
I was surprised the reviews for this boulangerie were not better, but then saw that most of the lower reviews were from over a year ago. Maybe management has changed or it has gotten better. But word is out because there can be a line! The croissants - from hazelnut to almond to chocolate all looked amazing. I ordered mini apple turnovers and croissants and they were delicious. Perfect for a morning stop before touring around Portland or just a morning pick me up before work.

Jeff C.

Yelp
Was in Portland overnight and Yelp led me to St Honore (Clinton). We ordered two cafe au lait, an almond croissant and a pain au Chocolat. The coffees were fine, and the almond croissant was all one would hope it to be. Sadly, the pain au Chocolat, while tasting fine, was noticeably lacking in crispness. It suggests that it was a day old product.
google avatar

Corrie S.

Yelp
What a lovely find! I was out for a stroll and noticed this spot. I am a sucker for almond croissants, so I popped in and had a delicious almond croissant, paired with a cup of black coffee. The ambiance was perfect for reading! I sat in a quiet corner, with my book and treats and had the best time!

Yelp
Won't be going here anymore. The last few times my mom and I have gone, we've found hairs in the pastries. This was the second time it happened. We will be going somewhere else from now on--which is sad, because when we first started going, that wasn't a problem. (This applies to only the Division location, as we have not been to any others St. Honore's)
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
Came after dinner for dessert. Not too much selection I got a cheese croustade, and friend got a macaron and little cake like desert. Croustade was good. I wished I went earlier so could've grabbed a kouign amann!

Yelp
Saint Honore is the French patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs. There are three locations of St. Honore Boulangerie in Portland. This one is located on Division and 33rd. There is seating indoors and outside on their patio. We came here today for a late lunch. There were a few other customers sitting at tables but no one was in line. The pastry case was just a bit picked over so we settled on the last black forest cake, an apple toast and the last two vegetable tarte tians. The cashier took our order and payment then handed us the two desserts on plates along with a number for our table. This is one of those places where you order and pay at the counter then someone brings the food to your table. You fetch your own water and bus your own table. So, can someone explain to me why you are asked for a tip amount when you pay for your order? Isn't tipping for services rendered? This practice of asking for a tip when barely any service is given needs to stop. There is a choice for "no tip" and that seems the only logical choice. If, after enjoying my meal I feel that a tip has been earned I put cash in their tip jar. We both enjoyed our vegetable tarte tians. These resembled pizza with layers of vegetables on a pastry crust. A small salad accompanied our tarte tians which consisted of some arugula, two sliced grape tomatoes and about three drops of dressing. Our two desserts were good but the vegetable tarte tian was the star. It seemed rather warm inside the restaurant so we chose to dine outside on the patio. Maybe all the baking keeps the place toasty. Considering there was no one else waiting for food, ours seemed slow to arrive. We would return here again but after trying the other two locations for comparison.

Yelp
OH MY GOD!!!! DESSERT HEAVEN! We tried 5 different Macarons (perfection, every single one... the strawberry rhubarb macaroon tasted of strawberries and rhubarb perfectly. Even the Snozberry tasted like a Snozberry....JK..LOL), We tried the St. Honore pastry. . You ABSOLUTELY must get this. The puff pastry was perfection; light but not too airy, the custard is amazing, not too sweet and perfectly custardy. We tried the Canelle. A perfect brioche rum piece of heaven. The brioche was perfectly baked and that rum sauce on top was just the right amount of sweet. I live in Oregon City, and I would drive all the way here over and over again, just so I could try every single pastry they make and then to try them all over again. You should too. Really, really you should. You will have found your favorite pastry shop if you do!!! P.S. I WILL BE DOING JUST THAT!!!

Get their CHOUQUETTES! For $5, you get a dozen in a little baggy, perfect for just popping in your mouth while you walk around the city. They are super light, similar to maybe a cream puff minus the cream. It's sweet and airy, just so tasty. It tastes just as good the next day too! The sugar melts down a little and it gets a little softer/soggier, but it's still so good!
