On the Grid : St James’s Park

"Bought by Henry VIII as parkland for hunting; filled with camels, crocodiles, elephants and exotic birds by James I; and converted into French ornamental gardens by Charles II — St James’s Park is the oldest royal park and has seen many reincarnations throughout its rich history. Its brilliant, varied planting changes with the seasons, and every visitor should cross the blue bridge for views of Buckingham Palace and Whitehall across the lake. The official symbol of St James’s, its pelicans have been residents here for over 350 years. Feeding time is 2.30pm by the ornamental cottage on Duck Island." - dn&co.

Nature and Parks in London

"For almost 400 years, pelicans have graced the banks of St James’s Park, a tranquil haven in London’s political center. Just a short walk from Horse Guards Parade and the Houses of Parliament, this park offers wonderful views of some of the city’s most famous landmarks. It was originally the gardens of notorious monarchs including Elizabeth I and James I, making it the oldest of London’s Royal Parks. Connecting St James’s Park, Hyde Park, Green Park, and Kensington Gardens is the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk, a seven-mile walk incorporating landmarks that were significant to the princess. This route is a great way to explore London’s green spaces and photogenic sites." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Google
A very beautiful park in the centre of London! Lots of ducks, squirrels, parrots, herons and swans with chicks. Cosy alleys, green lawns and a pond with islands. In summer you can hide from the heat in the shade of trees. Great views of Buckingham Palace, a place for picnics and walks. Nice to watch the birds, feed the squirrels and relax on the benches. One of the best parks in the city!

Google
Super pretty and peaceful park with lots of flowers and plants, and beautiful lake with pretty ducks and geese. Also ample space to sit on the grass and have a picnic or just hang out. Has a good amount of benches near a part of the lake too.

Google
A beautiful park full of animals. Squirrels, swans, and various species of ducks. On weekdays, it is an ideal place to relax in nature right in London. On weekends and when the weather is nice, the park is too crowded. Even so, a walk through the park is a wonderful experience.

Google
Gorgeous park with beautiful landscape and great diversity of water birds. Hosting lots of different species this park is a true paradise for bird photographers. All of the birds here are quite accustomed to humans and offer endless opportunities for photography including close-ups. Ornamental bushes and flowers are beautiful, there is also an area with fig trees that smells great with fig perfume, but the figs are not the edible kind (they are good for fig preserves, not for eating raw). There are lots of places to sit and take a break, ice cream booths and cafes offer refreshments. This is my favorite park in London.

Google
A very nice park in central London, which features a nice little pond with swans (including black swans) and ducks, and nice views of central London. A great reprieve from the traffic and chaos of the city, particularly in hot summer days.

Google
One of my most favourite outdoor spaces in London, right beside Buckingham Palace. It's such a calm and peaceful place with all manner of wildlife milling about freely. The squirrels are so used to humans that they'll happily come up to you and feed from your hands!

Google
I absolutely loved St James’s Park — such a great spot to stroll, relax in the shade, and enjoy the peaceful vibe. The park is beautiful and well maintained, with lots of flowers and wildlife. Honestly, wish we had places like this back in the US!

Google
St James's Park is an absolute treasure in the heart of London. Our walk through the park was incredibly pleasant — a perfect blend of nature, serenity, and iconic views. The beautifully kept gardens, the peaceful lake with swans and ducks, and the vibrant flowers created a truly relaxing atmosphere. As we strolled along the paths, the view of Buckingham Palace in the distance made the experience even more special. Reaching the palace after such a scenic walk was the perfect ending to a calm and memorable afternoon. If you're visiting London, taking time to wander through St James's Park is a must. It’s one of the city’s most charming green spaces and a lovely way to approach one of its most iconic landmarks.

Yelp
"I love you, Marion..." - Robin Longstride There's so much to do in London: music, shopping, pubs, museums, pomp & circumstance, discovering boroughs & statues, and do what Anglophiles do. For me, I also enjoy just wandering the old alleyways and historic parks. One such park is St. James Park and Lake. St. James Park dates to 1603 and is sandwiched between Buckingham Palace and the River Thames. Not a stones throw from the legendary Nottingham. Maybe not as ancient as Robin's forest, but can you imagine the stories the trees could tell? If only. How many royals wandered in my footsteps? And to think that this historic park survived the Great London Fire of 1666! Surviving even the bombs of WWII. Astonishing! And here she still sits ready for the next generation of Brits to roam. As I wandered the park I came across a lake with an island in the centre. I noticed ducks and aquatic birds and such. And even more ducks and geese. Of course, the tiny island is called duck island! Genius lol! I also enjoyed the historic statues and monuments scattered across the 57 acres. Just a great place to wander. All in all, I recommend St. James Park. It's almost inevitable if in Westminster. Sadly, I didn't come across my Lady of the Lake or young Maid Marion. Ahh if only. Then again Excalibur has yet to be found too... Ta! "At the end of the day, I fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. If that makes me an outlaw, so be it. I've been called worse..." And so the legend begins...

Yelp
Great park to walkthrough when going to or from Buckingham Palace. Nice lakes / ponds. Great playground for the kids. Will be back.

Yelp
Large beautiful park in the heart of London. I only saw a small portion of it, but I'm sure I'll be back at some point. My kid really liked the variety of wildlife here and the large green space to run wild. As usual, I really appreciate the massive trees, as I'm from an area where trees burn before they reach any height of significance.

Yelp
St. James' Park is the oldest royal park and is located in the heart of Westminster. The park includes The Mall and Horse Guards Parade, and is surrounded by landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, and Whitehall. There are trees, flowers, lakes with islands, bridges, a playground, wildlife, and walking paths throughout. It's a big, beautiful green space in this bustling city that's worth a stroll if you're nearby and can be easily added to any itinerary. We found ourselves here after a visit to Westminster Abbey. It was on our way to Buckingham Palace so we decided to walk through the park instead of walking along The Mall, which we've done on a previous trip. It was nice to see so many people out and about and enjoying the sunshine. We were here during the summer and we did notice a lot of pollen in the air. For those with allergies, bring some tissue :)
google avatar

Stephen P.

Yelp
Lovely pocket of nature in the middle of the city. There are an array of planted gardens and tree lined paths to wander. But it's not only for human enjoyment: there are also wilder areas that support a range of birds and insects.
google avatar

MaryLinda W.

Yelp
The park is beautiful and there are green parakeets in there that are very tame! After standing in the sun for the changing of the guard at nearby Buckingham Palace, the shade of the park was quite welcome. There is lots more to discover in the park, but we enjoyed what we saw.
google avatar

Yelp
I was fortune enough to Pick a hotel ( St. Ermines) super close to this historic park, Buckingham Palace and so much more. The park is beautiful as is the front grounds of the Slavs and the Mall. I spent many mornings enjoying the walk.

Yelp
Calling this park "beautiful" is truly an understatement. It's kind of hard to put into words just how stunning it really is. It's a fairytale filled with bright green fields, vibrant flowers, beautiful shaded paths, and rampant wildlife. The gorgeous lake just ties everything in together so perfectly. It's charming. Graceful. Serene. Everything that you long for in a storybook park. Strolling through St. James Park was like therapy for my soul. Every smell was a breathe of fresh air. Every sight was food for my eyes. Every sound was music to my ears. Every moment was pure bliss. And even though the clock was ticking, it felt like time just slowed down. Watching the geese roam through the grass and seeing the beautiful swans swim across the lake was so calming. And all of the picturesque views of the park just priceless. I enjoyed each and every moment spent roaming through this lovely park. The paths are wide and shaded by the most gorgeous trees you can wander through the park and stop by so many famous landmarks. Buckingham Palace will literally be right at your feet. I mean, you could literally spend your entire day here. Bring your lunch and find a nice shady space on the grass and just chill. Or get some exercise while taking in the beautiful views along the walking paths. Also for all of your flower heads. There are tons and TONS of vibrant flower gardens throughout this park. A total beauty! If you get hungry, they have street vendors along a few of the paths. Restaurants aren't too far away, and there are signs that will tell you what landmarks are restrooms are nearby. London's Park game is somethin' serious, and St. James' Park was one of my absolute favorites to visit. When in London, you should definitely put a visit to this amazing park at the top of your list.

Yelp
Great place to stroll around and get to Buckingham palace you can watch the changing of the guard as well!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
A lovely park. Lots of trees and shade. Maybe a bit underwhelming in terms of grassy areas. But, there are plenty of swans hanging around the bridge that crosses over the little river.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
We took a walk through this park after we left Buckingham Palace since it was so close by. There were a lot of birds to see. Beautiful place to take photos.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful park with a pond and so many beautiful bird sightings! We loved crossing the bright across the water and the stunning gates to enter. Worth the walk through.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is beautiful. It is an oasis within the busy city. There is a great view from the pond that has all of the birds in it of the London Eye. The parade grounds are right across the street, as well as the Chuchill War Rooms. There are magnificent war monuments as well, and beautiful gardens, including peonies. The walk to Buckingham Palace is great within the park. What is fantastic about this park is that people utilize it. They work in it, play in it, and relax in it. I love it.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful park in the heart of Westminster and the Buckingham Palace area. It's not big at all. but rather is a almost a center green space which is flanked by Buckingham Palace at one end, the government buildings and Royal Stables at the other and St. James Place on yet another side. Full of mature trees and birds and water fowl of all kinds including white and black swans, I came when the daffodils and bluebells had just come up and the magnolia trees were blooming. How can you not like this place?

Yelp
The St. James Park in London is over 900 Acres and all of it is magical. There is a large lake which is home to ducks, birds, and even pelicans. It is simply stunning. St. James Park is near Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and other sights in London. The park will simply take your breath away. It is a sanctuary in a busy city. You can take walk, have lunch or spend the entire day there. There's just so much to see. It is beautiful all year long and if the only time you get a chance to see it is in the rain, do it. Have the best time.
google avatar

Yelp
US tourist here, and really admiring your wonderful city and landscapes. This park is excellent and full of friendly smiling people. Kids playing and feeding birds, family's picnicking, joggers, company team building... just a real pleasant place to sit for a while. Just outstanding.

Yelp
What a beautiful lush huge park. Very busy because it is right by Buckingham Palace and The Mall. Easy to walk to from these sites though. It was super green when I came. I loved how green it was. Great place for nature shots. The lake that runs in the park is very pretty as well. Great place to take a stroll or just relax with a snack.

Yelp
What a beautiful park. We couldn't get enough of it. It is very well maintained & has gorgeous trees & plants. The lake with all its weeping willows & birds is just breathtaking. I can't wait to go there again.

Yelp
Right next to Buckingham Palace, this park is gorgeous and large. While pretty in the winter, I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the sprint and summer. The lake was full of ducks, breathtaking swans, and pelicans. Yes, pelicans. They were gifted to London from the Russian ambassador in the 1600s (this was one of the stops during our Sandeman walking tour.) The park was busy but it is large enough to not feel overly crowded. It would be lovely to have a picnic here in warm weather.

Yelp
While on vacation in London, we stayed at the nearby Sheraton Grand London Park Lane. One morning, we decided to go see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. After awhile, we started walking towards St. James's Park. Given the number of parks in London, St. James's Park is one of many but in my mind, it stuck out the most. The park has a small lake and a large number of birds waterfowl, including pelicans, wrens, mallards, Tufted ducks, various British duck species, swans (including black swans), and geese. There are also an abundance of grey squirrels here. The animals are not particularly afraid of people and will come up to you if it looks like you have food. In fact, two squirrels climbed on my BF thinking he had something to give them. At the center of lake is the Tiffany Fountain. On special occasions, the fountain jet is illuminated in color. There's a bridge here called Blue Bridge that offers an amazing panoramic view eastward of the Horse Guards Parade, Old War Office, and Whitehall Court; southward of the London Eye, Shell Tower, and the Shard; and westward of Buckingham Palace. This is a great place to leisurely walk around and take in the lovely views. Since it is next to all things touristy, it can get to be a bit crowded but it's well worth a stroll.

Yelp
Beautiful park! We were able to stroll through here after leaving Buckingham Palace and picked up a cup of hot chocolate to enjoy from the cafe.

Yelp
St. James's Park is the park that near the Buckingham Palace. My hubby and I travel here via the underground, we were on the way to check out the Buckingham Palace, but since St. James's Park is on the way, we decided to make a small detour and have ourselves some nice walk in this beautiful park. The funny thing is most of the time, I just some small peek from the movie, I got the change to know this park better was from the game Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Which the location of the game happened to be in London. Although the timeline was in the past, but it is almost precise. It was quite a interesting experience for me to see many locations after the game. The park was so different with what I see in the game. Of course, there got some new coffee around, and buildings as well. There's a small bridge in the park that cross the lake, in the middle of that people could have a small peek of the Buckingham Palace. We tried out one of the café, which close to the bridge. It was quite great place to relax and enjoy the green. The Coffee was quite nice as well. Notice, the place is self-service though. The park is really great to have a walk and chilling, many locals with friends and families were around. From the park to the Buckingham Palace took us a bit more than half hours, mainly because we were enjoying the time here. I think usually just need 10 minutes to get there. In my opinion, it is worth to make a stop in the park. It is quite a beautiful place.

Yelp
One of the original green spaces! Londoners take their parks seriously and St. James is well-maintained with so much to offer. There's the Princess Diana trail, gorgeous bridge views of Buckingham Palace and the Eye, ponds full of ducks, and so many gorgeous flowers. There are even lounge chairs to enjoy the area if the weather is cooperative. Come for a stroll or snap a pic with Queen Anne's Gate.

Yelp
Located in central London - right by Buckingham Palace, in fact - St. James's Park is a relatively small but exceptionally beautiful patch of green in this city. Smack in the middle of the park is a long stretch of lake, and as a result St. James's Park is home to a number of water birds. A stroll through this area will give you a chance to spot ducks, geese, swans, and the park's famous colony of pelicans. And that's on top of its tree-dwelling birds, not to mention the numerous squirrels and other little mammals! So while it's a small park, it's definitely a must-visit for animal and bird lovers. My mother and I spent a couple of hours just enjoying the sights and sounds of the park's feathered residents. Since we visited in the fall the birds were the biggest thing to see, but I can only imagine how beautiful it must be here in the spring when things are blooming for the first time! I do need to mention, if you visit this park, please pay attention to any signs about feeding and not feeding its animal residents? Water fowl in particular can be cranky critters, and the squirrels are bold enough that I've seen them crawl right up people's legs to get to the food they're holding - so I worry that not obeying the rules could really lead to someone getting hurt. That's all I have to say about that. Head on over for a relaxing stroll if you're in the area - I definitely wish I could walk through St James's more often!
google avatar

Yelp
This is an excellent and beautiful park to stop at and the weird thing is that it is located right in the center of a bustling city. Once you get inside this park, you feel like you're away from the big city. It is very relaxing to come here and look at the pond, walk on the greenery or go to a nearby cafe. I highly recommend that you walk through this park.
google avatar

Benny H.

Yelp
Not the largest park, but what it lacks in size it make up in personality, beauty, ducks, squirrels, and pigeons. Lots and lots of pigeons. Stop feeding the pigeons people! You can't even walk without a pigeon attack. I saw a little girl so frustrated she tried to kick one! With that being said, this is a beautiful place and you can easily sit back and enjoy the beauty of it all. It's amazing for a stroll. especially on a nice sunny day. London has really surprised me this past week, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
Man, what a lovely park! Why does London have so many nice parks in the city? So jelly. We only walked a portion of the park, starting from the side bordering the Horse Guard Parade til we hit Queen Anne's Gate. Very scenic, great for photos, and plenty of spots to throw down a blanket and enjoy nature. The huge lake in the middle splits the park in half horizontally, but don't worry, look for the bridge in the middle to cross. Keep down that path and you'll hit Queen Anne's Gate. I can see myself coming here every evening to relax if I live in London.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Okay, this park is nowhere near as great as Hyde Park, but it still has it's charm about it. The main reason has to do with all of the squirrels that you see running about everywhere. Okay, I sure the locals don't think all that much of squirrels, but being an Australian, the first time I saw one was a hoot. As such I've always found sitting here to have some lunch to be a bit of a hoot. When I was here last they had some deckchairs out on the lawn, though you had to pay to use them, and the only way to pay for them was over the internet, which was quite annoying. However, while this is a nice park, and quite close to Buckingham Palace, it still isn't anywhere near as great as Hyde Park.
google avatar

Carson C.

Yelp
I know it's weird to review a park, but you must see this park in-person! It is so green, mature, and peaceful. There are lots of different birds (pelicans, geese, etc.), and a lots of room to spread out. If you need to clear your head, or simply want to visit the beauty that this park offers, take a stroll through St. James' Park! Carson C. Visalia, California
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
Yet another beautiful and well-maintained park in London. Lots of small wildlife and blooming flowers. The lake is serene and peaceful. It's very close to Buckingham Palace so it's perfect to visit after a trip there. There is a cafe where you can get a snack or wine. The beauty here is worth a quick visit alone, so be sure to stop in when in London.
google avatar

Daniel Eric M.

Yelp
Another stunning area of London you have to see. Plenty to do and the most beautiful sights. It's close to shops, pubs, museums and so much more. Just amazing!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
A fine London park...if you can avoid the throngs of tourists (tip you won't, walk early through the park outside of summer for less 'throngy' feel) Views of Buckingham Palace are amazing..it really is a delightful Park to stroll through on a glorious autumn morning.
google avatar

Yelp
The nicest park in London if not in the world. Beautifully maintained by a large staff you can find all sorts of birds and in particular the magnificent pelicans. I love the different sections of the park with different vibes with my favorite part being the one closest to Buckingham palace with beautiful and colorful trees. A must in London
google avatar

Yelp
I'm marking this as a go to to hold my first of many Healing Immersions at - please if you are reading this, thank the universe for opening space for me to travel here

Yelp
What I really like about London was that there were a lot of parks everywhere you go. Lots of benches, grass areas, lakes, and trees in the park. It is a great place to have picnics or get your daily doses of vitamin D and exercise in! This is right next to Buckingham Palace and a short walk to the other tourist attractions like Trafalgar Square and the London Eye/Big Ben. There are a lot of ducks and geese in this park so the kids can enjoy watching them! There is a great view of the London Eye from this park and it allows for a great photo op!
google avatar

Elysa L.

Yelp
A must-see in the city. The park is located in the heart of Westminster, bordering the Mall. The park is famous for its diverse birds species that visit the park's pond (including pelicans, which are apparently given as a gift by other nations) . Near to the stables, there is the old bird-keeping house that is worth the stop- a shockingly quaint building in the middle of Westminster. Throughout the park, there are plenty of green spaces to sit and have a snack or some wine. There are also chairs available for rent throughout the park.
google avatar

CeCe C.

Yelp
Nice lake with lots of birds! It's an improvement from Green Park. But it could be better. I was just afraid of all the birds here. There are so many because people like to feed them! I thought they were ready to attack and poop on me!
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
I find myself very lucky as the place I work is about a minute's walk from St. James's Park, and throughout the summer I often took lunchtime strolls around the place. Particularly as an excuse to buy a strawberry cornetto and then walk around the lake while eating it. There's plenty to see and you wouldn't believe the changes throughout the seasons. One of my favourite times of the year to visit is the early spring - for some reason all the squirrels in Westminster flock to the park to hang out, chill (no Netflix though) and chase each other around the park. The summer brings out the birds on the lake and it's pretty in the autumn as the leaves drop and the colours come in. Just watch out for the pellicans. They've been known to eat pigeons. Also keep an eye out for the squirrels as while some are very friendly, others are not so much - I've certainly had one scream at me from half way up a tree trunk (and a bit of a distance). But it's just some a lovely park for walking around, and unlike Hyde Park, you don't have to worry about being run over by a Boris bike (mostly).
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
Beautiful scenic park! I grabbed some food earlier, sat here and people watched and ate it leisurely. Then went for a nice walk. Was wonderful!
google avatar

Deb P.

Yelp
A serene, quiet (except for school field trips) place. Ducks and swans. Green. Peaceful. Gorgeous flora - different trees and small flower varieties. Ducks will come right up to you with their beaks turned towards you looking for a snack. St. James's Park is a national treasure. You can literally decompress in a matter of minutes.
google avatar

Damon B.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this beautiful park with open spaces and people watching all around. As a New York City native, this park has a similar feel and look to the incomparable Central Park. It was a pleasure to be here and I would march my family here on any return to London.
google avatar

GT W.

Yelp
Buckingham Palace isn't too exciting. It doesn't look like a palace nor can you go inside to visit (unless you make reservations on specific days). So most tourists to London will merely see it from behind the wrought-iron gates. However, you get to spend time in St James's Park while walking to the palace, which is a very nice stroll. There's ample geese and ducks in the pond and beautiful trees and flowers. It's an excellent way to get outside, enjoy nature, get some exercise, and pay no money.
google avatar

Saige M.

Yelp
A beautiful park, so well manicured. I loved strolling through and taking in the gorgeous flowers. This is one of my favorite places in London to get away from the hustle and bustle and feel in touch with nature.
google avatar

Vi T.

Yelp
I walked around from one end to the other, right after watching a changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and it took a good 30 minutes for a leisurely stroll to get to Trafalgar Square. There's quite a bit of ducks (and various other water foul) and a few swans freely swimming about in the pond and you can see the London Eye in the horizon background. Nice serene setting for picnics and families/couples.
google avatar

Kathleen W.

Yelp
This may be my favorite park in all of London. I love the calmness and of course, the pelicans! I would suggest grabbing a cup of coffee and taking a stroll towards the palace. There is a great bridge that offers a beautiful photo of the palace. It will be perfect for Instagram.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
I've worked in the area for just over 2 years, and as often as I can, I will go for a walk around this park. There's lovely little pockets of interest - the play area, the lake, the parakeets, the swans, the café.
google avatar

Carl G.

Yelp
Beautiful park. Not much to say other than that. Well kept, but very busy due to it's location right next to all the royal areas and downtown. You must pay for toilets and chairs (despite the fact that there are no signs for the chairs). We really enjoyed sitting out and people watching, good spot for this for sure!
google avatar

Jenelle C.

Yelp
I never really knew this park existed until I had to walk through it to get to Buckingham Palace. It was such a beautiful stroll in the park on a nice day and I could imagine it gets packed during the summer with lots of people doing picnics or couples taking romantic strolls. It's also a nice park for pictures because not only is it very clean it also has a lot of of green scenery. Relaxing atmosphere and I'd gladly take a stroll here any day.

Yelp
Fooled by randomness? 4 black swans and 2 white ones are featured residents of the St James park, while i'm the regular visitor. I adore the Park as my playground in four seasons. In winter, the private lodge is imagined to be the home for Snow White. The snowmen are the guardians, full of visitors' creativity. My favourites are an angel with wings and the Chinese traditional. In spring, the soil smells so freshly as gardeners making the flower beds. Running in the park is a much enjoyable activity as you allow the young green grows on you. I miss my running buddy now. In summer, the park turns into a sea of the real visitors both local and int'l. Countless beach chairs are laid and rent for people to bathe the sun, read books, catch up with friends. In autumn, the leaf colours are blended, with a touch of sorrow. Inn the Park Restaurant shelters visitors from the grey, drizzle, and warms the hearts with its delicious cappuccino and healthy food.
