The Best Portland Food Cart Pods for Rainy Days | Eater Portland

"Like many St. Johns gems, the Beer Porch and its 17 carts are largely unknown outside of North Portland, but the charmingly eclectic porch is well worth the visit for a leisurely — and warm — weekend afternoon hang. Sip on one of the Porch’s stellar beers on tap while sampling fare from favorite carts like the Trinidad-by-way-of-Albuquerque Calypso Southwest, chicken Parm powerhouse Mangiamo, and Little Tibet’s peppery Himalayan thukpa." - Nathan Williams

Google
Great selection of food carts including amazing pizza, tasty sushi and awesome tacos and burritos. Beer cart has a rotating taplist of tasty craft beers and can do growler fills. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a low key hangout spot.

Sarh Max

Google
Awesome food cart selection. They offer at least 3 different vegan options, breakfast shop, drink shop, Mediterranean, Mexican, Italian, japanese, and what we ate, tibetan. It also has a covered bar, tons of tables and seating. The parking isn't ideal, no parking lot.

Kevin Schoonmaker

Google
The food carts and beer garden are excellent and a mainstay of the St. John’s community, but the owner of this property needs to step it up and invest in maintenance; at the very least keep the propane refilled for the heaters.

Google
Wow amazing! All foods and beers are amazing good! I tried Japanese chicken karaage (deep fried chicken) was totally Japanese taste! I felt relief with taste. I must come back again. I think I can enjoy my Portland life lol

Google
Food was very good and service was super. Great seating and St. Johns atmosphere.

Sanket Khedekar

Google
Good food cart place with different cuisine. I liked momos from Little Tibet PDX.

Google
There was t anything we didn’t love. Try it. Great neighborhood food trucks with eating area. Indoor bar.

Rigging Department

Google
Food carts are awesome and there is a lot of choices but the beer porch is lame and is not open. Sign says open. Three people standing around trying to be served. After 1pm. Beautiful sunny day.

Yelp
Service excellent! Winter time the bar offers table size heater buddies. Yeah! You can choose to heat or not heat your table. The porch section is undercover and has a plastic slat entry/exit. The space is also heated by propane heaters. In all the comfort in here is warmer than out in the open. The beer menu rotates through out the year. Enjoyed two stout porters on this trip. Yum! I was able to enjoy my meal and beer all under cover with a heater. Can't say enough wow and excellent service, food (food truck), and beer. Look to return soon.

Yelp
Great people, great place, great hang! The perfect neighborhood bar for people who don't want to hang out in a bar
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of beer and local selections. The hard kombucha is such a refreshing drink on a warm day. $20 to fill a growler!!! Wish I'd brought mine! Will definitely bring it next time.

Yelp
This review applies only to the bar, NOT the food carts. Very unpleasant experience here. Among other things, bartender told me "I'm pro-Hamas, pro-Hezbollah and I wish I could put 'Hezbollah' across the front of my T-shirt. I hope they rape..." - lost my attention at this point. Leading up to this, I was subjected to what seemed like a scripted way of talking over me. I did not bring up the situation in Gaza; the bartender did. Whatever you think about the dismal Middle East situation, you should NEVER hear any of these words from a person serving the general public, and the subject should never be brought up by the bartender. In every business I know of that deals with the public, this hostile attitude would bring about an immediate termination. Just to add - I've been an extremely loyal neighborhood regular here since it all started. At this point, I will NEVER return unless I know things have changed. If you alienate your most loyal customers, you will not be around long. I've never been treated so poorly at any other public space. Sad - this was a great neighborhood hangout for most of its history...

Yelp
Great place to get a beverage while waiting for a to-go order or for eating in. Good selection of beers for those who like them and a few ciders and wines for those of us who don't. Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Its really confusing sometimes cause I've had good and bad experiences at the beer porch. On a Sunday it's really cool to sit on the benches and hang around but on those same hot days they have trouble keeping there beers to temp. They have really good food carts as well but the problem is ALOT em are closed later in the week. It's very dog friendly which means sometimes there are animal fights I've personally seen two strangers have to pull there dogs away from each other. But it's a nice outside hang during the summer if you live close I wouldn't drive here from another area.

Yelp
This is fun and oh so Portland. Funky, fun, and a great neighborhood vibe to feel relaxed, eat, drink, and be merry. Ample picnic tables are centered between a variety of food carts, with the beer porch adjacent. The porch is a covered area where you can also take your food and eat it there, or take your beer and eat it near the food carts. This laid back area is a nice place to gather with friends, enjoy a meal, coffee, ice cream, or simply drink some great beer at $6.00 / mason jar. Stop by and see for yourself. The people are super friendly and the food and drinks are delicious.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to grab a drink in Saint Johns. What is lacks in accessibility it more than makes up for in ambiance and general quirkyness. The trucks here are great! Love the variety and quality of food. Truly something for everyone. The beer porch specifically is a repurposed school bus and come on, can you get any cuter?! Great selection or ciders and hard kombucha if that's your thang. Friendly bar tenders. Just fun vibes and a great beer!

Yelp
This is one of our fav places! So many solid choices! The Thai is prob my overall favorite (I have to stop myself from ordering it every time -it's that amazing!) but the pizza is also creative and awesome, the no-chicken sandwiches were a huge surprise (DELICIOUS!) and the Italian, ice cream and tacos are all good.

Yelp
So we visited on a super beautiful, warm and sunny November day. This being said, I am sure you can imagine it was a bit busier than it had been. It was hard to figure out WHERE to buy alcohol as it isn't signed well, but its cute and small (think Tiki Hut.) When we first went to buy our drinks, there was no one there and a line. So we waited a bit and went back and then there was someone there and no line. Our drinks were good and it was enjoyable to have out on the patio in the sunshine. I bet this would be a great place to enjoy once rainy season is behind us and we can venture outside a bit more. (And COVID because its WAY more fun to enjoy a drink on a patio without masks and social distancing!)

Yelp
Been back since then and still received the same unfriendly service. You shouldn't have to find an owner to report that service is bad.
google avatar

Yelp
Omg I love this place. I don't know why but it's got some charm. It's in a food cart pod and they have literally recreated an old porch. He's got a great selection of beer. They are $6. The owner is super nice and you can take your beer to the different food carts. I love that they serve the beer in mason jars. It's got a great hippie, family vibe. In the summer we listened to live music while sipping our beer. We drove from SW Portland here and I'd do it again. Super fun, typical Portland.
google avatar

Yelp
A great local hangout with a good selection of beers and food trucks. You never really know which trucks are open, so it's luck of the draw. There is one bartender who plays exclusively country music and that gets very tiresome, so I have to remove a star for that. The bartender seems to think everyone is a country fan, but it just makes me want to finish my beer and get out of there. If country music ISN'T playing, I find the porch very serene and pleasant to hang out it - one of my favorite places in St. Johns - a town where the number of favorite place is dwindling fast.

Yelp
Cute spot for good variety of quality food. Girlfriend and I tried to get a few different things to share. She loved the PoBoy pork sandwich and I loved the fish and chips. Diverse, inclusive group and it was fun to see all the pups accompanying their owners. We'll definitely be back to try other options! Make sure to check the times for each cart before going if you're looking for something specific, we wanted sushi but it wasn't open yet. Self clean your tables, they provide the cleaning supplies. Only some tables are shaded so bring sun protection if you need it!

Sierra H.

Yelp
I can't tell you how enjoyable this experience was. I like nick but I love Casey! Idk that I will be coming here if she's not tending! She's fast and has great recommendations!

Amanda D.

Yelp
The bartender got mad and was being super rude to us because our 2.5 year old son spilled some water by accident. What kind of lowlife gets mad at a toddler for spilling water?
google avatar

Danielle W.

Yelp
How stinkin' cute! Apparently we've moved on from Beer Gardens to Beer Porches. A welcomed change and I'm never looking back :) Nestled right in the middle of a bunch of food carts, the Beer Porch allows patrons to sit down (in any number of tables and chairs and couches combinations) and enjoy a cold one in a mason jar while they eat their desired dish too. It's simple, it's no frills, it's straightforward, it's so Portland. Oh, and did I mention it's dog and kid friendly? Date nights for sure! Assuming you can get a seat because this gem won't be a hidden secret for much longer!
google avatar

Yelp
Flourish is a great full vegan food cart here at the st John's beer porch. Hand made beet burgers. All gluten free. Check it out
google avatar

Yelp
Noooooooo! They closed down the beer wagon! My heart is broken. They just weren't making enough $$$ to make a go of it here in this neck of the deforested woods. Their other locations will continue, on Division and Sauvie Island, but my beer wagon dream come true on Alberta is over. Sadness. Depression. Beer-related angst. Good luck on all your other endeavors, Captured by Porches!
google avatar

Yelp
What can one say about good beer, outdoors, with a bunch of food carts and a Kruger's all right there? Well, if they don't mind me dropping a sleeping bag right there, I'd just set up camp, and it would be great. This was a quick visit only because we were picking up food for a bbq, so one fast beer and we were in and out. They have some good choices and a kolsch was the choice for me. Free beer is even better when your buddy offers it up. No complaints by me. Thankfully we were there before the summer heat really set in. I can't imagine how hot it gets over there. Nice place and I enjoyed the beer porch.
google avatar

Yelp
The heart of the St. John's food court area. This spot is wonderful funky and authentic. We love the beers on tap and the indoor area. They have their own music series into the summer and movies in the winter. This isn't a polished corporate place. It's a place for for enjoying the Portland culture and watching the people. The music mix by the way is awesome.
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
Ladies and gentlemen. We live in the greatest city ever (sorry NY but we don't have to deal with your humid/snowy weather). Amazing beer that comes out of a tap on the side of a bus. How much better can you get than that? If you don't like beer, move on. This is the summer is made for. Captured By Porches is a very Portland thing. Pair one of their beers along with some food from one of the food carts here (I had some food from Che Cafe) and enjoy an enjoyable time. It doesn't get much better than this.
google avatar

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Cute little place in the St. John's food cart pod. They have a cozy little porch with couches and a hammock to relax on. The girl who works the bar is always very nice, but we once winessed a lady (her boss?) angrily pull her aside and close the bar for a "staff meeting" while people were waiting in line. So that was weird. The beer has been flat and watered down each time I've visited, but the atmosphere is relaxing so I will be back to hang out.
google avatar

Connor B.

Yelp
The atmosphere and the bartender are awesome! The food selection is good, but they can run out of ingredients as most food carts do. Overall nice place. The outside could use some more lights as well.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
It's my sort of spot. Cold except by the stove. Or breezy and cool in the shade. A healthy range of options. Served in a mason jar. I've never had a bad time here and do not intend to in the future. Nestled amidst my favorite food art pod so there are lots of food choices too.
google avatar

Drew L.

Yelp
Simple review for a simple place with a simple concept. Great service. Great idea. Great atmosphere. A brilliant plan, putting in this little food and beer utopia. Glad to be in the neighborhood. Makes for a great place on hot weekend days.
google avatar

Ruby T.

Yelp
How could you not love this place?! Two words, beer and cider! They've got great selections (rotating) and a quick and friendly staff. So while your getting some delicious food from one of the food carts, might as well enjoy a glass of beer or cider with it.
google avatar

Haley F.

Yelp
The wide selection of food here makes this the perfect destination for a large group of friends. The staff are very welcoming and the atmosphere here is chill af. Would definitely return. Highly recommend the Cajun fries at chez cafe with Mohawk sauce. Only suggestion is to have more lighting outside at night. Perhaps some dangling Christmas lights over the outdoor patio

Bev F.

Yelp
I got a black cherry cider and it was quite tastey! The outdoor roofed area is perfect for the fall weather too. I loved the atmosphere of this place 10/10!
google avatar

nathan g.

Yelp
After tipping $2 cash, the blonde bartender woman looks right at us and says "neither of you left a tip?". Sneak your own beer in, this place is a joke.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
A lot of solid options from plant based burgers, chicken wings, schwarma, ice cream, Mexican food, soups/sandwiches, etc! Along with a place that pours a great selection of beers. Plenty of seating as well for a large group we had!
google avatar

Faith P.

Yelp
Very good beer, nice people, fun atmosphere, amazing food, outdoor area for sun and covered area for rain. Something for everyone. Perfect Portland gathering place. :D
google avatar

Willow B.

Yelp
Great food options all around, and a cozy place to enjoy a beer or cider while sitting by the outdoor fire. A neighborhood treasure!
google avatar

Christa A.

Yelp
On any given sunny day you will find us kicking back soaking up the rays, throwing back a couple of pints just living the life. We like to bike here and when we are feeling very adventurous we will walk and take one of the dogs but sometimes he acts like a dick and so we usually just bike here. Everyone there is in a good mood, this is most likely due to the awesome times and beer flowing from the brew bus. There are plenty of seats/picnic tables. Some really great mexican grub from Velas food cart and plenty of room to park your bike. At night they have a fire pit. Is there anything this place did not think of? Bring cash.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! Lately my boyfriend and I go here at least a couple times a week and it's safe to say we've tried just about everything. These days I'm pretty set in my ways, with my two favorite items for breakfast. Either the french toast from Che Cafe, (which is the best french toast ever!!) or the Paiku omelette from Paiku. Both these places kill it, with great service and delicious meals. My only upset is when they are closed! The area itself is very family friendly, with a cute produce market, plenty of tables and even music sometimes! They have an indoor area where you can lounge by the fire or grab a cider while you wait for your food. There are outdoor tables as well if you feel like some sunshine. Sometimes they can get a little busy, especially on the weekends, but we have never had to wait too long or had a problem with seating. I feel like this place is a secret gem that only local St. Johnians know about, and I am glad to be in the know!

Yelp
My chances of being a Beer Widow are great. As a result, it is in the best interest of my marriage to participate in the beer crawls my husbandly likes to make in his free time. This beer wagon is my favorite because we don't have to drive. It has a great courtyard and Merry the Wonder Beagle loves hanging out there with the families and wee children. I often times meet my husband here in the afternoon, he walks past it on his way home from work, so we meet for a game of backgammon, beer and sometimes a burger from Burgers or Bust. The servers are friendly and the atmosphere is lovely. As the weather hints at summer, we hope to make this a regular stop. Plus, the husbandly will now walk the dog on his own, at least as far as the beer wagon...
google avatar

Rylee O.

Yelp
My first full weekend as a Portlander a group of us descended on D-Street to do some noshing. Captured By Porches had the perfect brews to pair with my bacon and broccoli mac & cheese. I'll be back!
google avatar

E N.

Yelp
We love this spot!! The variety of food options at the carts is great, and it's fun to have a few cold beverages too. Staff is really friendly. The only thing I would change is cleanliness. A good deep clean would really do the place wonders.
google avatar

Candice Z.

Yelp
How could you not love this place? They make great beer, the people are chill, and if it's a little cold & rainy you can sit on the bus and play records or read a book. Last time we went there was a band playing and everyone just sat around talking and having a great time. I sipped my pumpkin beer out of a mason jar and walked around looking at the farmers market right next door. You really couldn't ask for a better evening in North Portland. My other favorite thing about CBP is their bottles. If you buy one at the grocery store you can return it to CBP and have it refilled. So by buying a beer from them it's pretty much like buying a growler. So awesome. And sustainable!
google avatar

Casey D.

Yelp
The beer is good - really good - but c'mon: it's a BEER CART. How can you not love this? My boyfriend & I stumbled on the wagon during our after-dinner constitutional & were giddy. We hadn't intended to go anywhere or buy anything, so we had to scrounge through our pockets & came up with enough change & wadded-up bills for one pint to share - and a measly 50 cents for a tip. But never fear, Beer Wagon Proprietors: we'll be back often, and with grown-up paper money & proper gratuities. In the meantime, though, I have to say, the inaugural visit was just right: I felt like a kid dumping change on the counter for candy, and there's nothing like drinking beer from a mason jar - by way of taps in the side of a trailer - to make you feel like you're getting away with something. Add in the makeshift, candle-lit courtyard & the convivial crowd & it feels like you're on vacation. Or in on a secret. Or all of the above. And did I mention the beer is good?
google avatar

F U.

Yelp
A few years ago I gave this place two stars. After becoming a regular, I've updated it to 5. Why? Better beer selection. Falafel. Breakfast sandwiches and coffee. BBQ. Potatoes. Farmer's market. Fire pit. This place went from shabby to INCREDIBLE in a few short years. I hope it continues to improve and expand.
google avatar

Karin K.

Yelp
The apricot was a bit fruity for me, but the Blonde was superior. The "weight" was perfect; refreshing but not too light. A great variety and quality for a pub, much less a beer wagon! Love the new bus set up. Often see them out at Kruger's Market on Sauvie Island.
google avatar

Beatriz D.

Yelp
$4 pits. Beers from all over, their wheat apricot was amazing. Great music, friendly service, delicious brews.
google avatar

Cecily B.

Yelp
LOVE this bus!! Went there for the first time last night with some friends from the area. Their beer is super! They serve it in mason jars (ill never get over my love for the jar), the guy who pours your beer is one of the nicest in town (he also juggles something fierce) and they have a covered picnic table area with a fire pit (where local musicians seem to flock...free, live, genuine music is the best!!). Inside the bus, if the fire pit just isn't keeping you warm enough, there are books and games and comfy couches to lounge upon. AND if you get a little hungry there are two food carts as well as the Kruger farm stand all in the same lot! HAVE FUN!!!
google avatar

Willard J.

Yelp
The beer porch is a great spot to wait for your food cart food to be prepped and enjoy a brew. They have a fireplace inside to keep you warm and dry in the rainy weather. The prices and beer selection are good and the staff is friendly. When I say staff I think I have only had one guy every serve me here! Great spot and a regular spot for myself and friends.
google avatar

Kai A.

Yelp
The Beer Porch is a St John's staple. The best place in the neighborhoodto grab a beer and some inexpensive food from a wide variety of food trucks. One of the best food truck P.O.D.s in Portland.
google avatar

Bethany S.

Yelp
Great beer. Comfortable chairs. Cute bartender and excellent music. All surrounded by awesome food carts. Seriously though, you're outside and drinking beer- perfect for a hot day.
google avatar

Kahti K.

Yelp
I love this pod! The falafel house makes the best eggplant sandwich, "The Sabich", these guys are true artists. I also love the creative food at Flourish, they have this carrot-based corn dog. I know, that sounds crazy, but it works and it's delicious. There is a Philly cheese steak at Chowdah! The meat is super tender and portioned perfectly. Dehomis has a wonderful karage chicken bowl. Captured by Porches beer is always fantastic. But move over if you love Chicken Wings, because there is a new cart in town! But sadly I can't remember their name, but they have the best wings in PDX!!! Seriously good! If someone can please write the name down so they get credit due! Thanks y'all
google avatar

Brandon Y.

Yelp
The atmosphere is what makes this place prefect for Portland and for gathering. The great beer is an awesome bonus!
