Towards Better Hospital Food: How One Chef Is Trying to Fix Patient Meals | Eater

"This pediatric research hospital treats food as part of therapy, running a hospitality-minded food service led by executive chef Michael Vetro that delivers restaurant-quality, on-demand meals to children, families, and staff. The kitchen recreates family recipes—everything from naan parathas, dal and butter chicken to enchiladas and Korean-style Silkie chicken stew—often inviting parents into the kitchen and even sourcing special ingredients or grocery-shopping to reproduce comfort dishes exactly. An à la carte room-service system is available anytime (about 70 patient room-service orders daily) and prioritizes calories and intensely flavored foods when treatment alters taste, all while staying within clinical dietary limits. With roughly 4,000 guests served daily and about 100 food-service employees, the program emphasizes customer service, flexibility, and empowering parents by letting them be part of feeding and comforting their children during treatment." - Martha Daniel

The 2025 run was held Saturday, August 2, beginning in Macomb IL and concluding in Peoria. Multiple segments launched from surrounding towns as part of a larger regional relay—Bloomington-Normal, Canton, Galesburg, etc.—each leg bringing together hundreds of local supporters . Peoria’s affiliation with St. Jude dates back to 1972, rooted in the founder’s personal connection to the city—emphasizing a long and meaningful community partnership. This relay is not a race, but a fundraising event with the sole purpose of supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Since its inception, the St. Jude Runs network has raised more than $94 million for research and patient treatment—funds that ensure families never get billed for care, travel, or lodging. March 7th 2025 I made a ONE TIME donation to St Jude Hospital. I clearly and specifically noted that this was a one time donation!! I clearly and definitively stated on the donation that St Jude was NOT to contact me for any additional monies, I clearly requested that I NOT be added to the JUNK mailing list. By the end of March I was inundated with JUNK MAIL requesting more funds. I have returned every piece of mail they have sent to me with written request to remove my name from the junk mail list and I have requested that St Jude NOT contact me again. After calling in May and requesting to be removed from the JUNK mail list, I continue to be harassed for more money. I advised St Jude both in writing and verbally that if they continued to harass me I would withdraw my donation. The JUNK mail continued so on June 22 I rescinded my donation. This still did not get the message across to St Jude as they continue to send multiple JUNK mail letters. I will NEVER make another donation to any organization again after this experience. The complete disregard of a simple request and the continued HOUNDING for more money makes me question the legitimacy of this organization.

I have a story to tell. A very recent story, that is likely to come to a close as of today. My stepfather was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago. He is no longer with us. But thanks to the kindness of Ms Stephanie and the amazing staff at St. Jude, he passed in the arms of his loved ones. Typically they don’t treat grown men, but My Stepfather was family to these people, and they made his last days on this earth bearable. One of the doctors however, his incompetence astonished me. The man in charge of quality control, did not have the treatment ready as we discussed, even though we had been discussing it for an absurd amount of time, and as such, My stepfather’s last hours were burdened by pain and fear. My mother, has not yet recovered from watching her husband die today. We are doing everything we can. However I will not allow the incompetence of one man to tarnish the reputation of an entire facility, who did everything they could. They sat with my mother as she wailed in grief on the floor, they made sure every family member was fed, and most of all they gave my stepfather a fighting chance. The United Methodist of Memphis hospital (which I will write a review for shortly) looks like a drug den in comparison to the Wonderful and kind Hospital of Saint Jude. Saint Jude is a safe, well trained, well protected, and extremely well equipped Research Center, and I hope that they will use the Tumors that My stepfather wished to give them upon his death for research, to make progress. Thank you Saint Jude, you make every penny, every nanosecond, and every ounce of research count.

Amazing place, they saved my wife's life when she was younger and took care of my aunt before she passed.

I'm on a fixed income and disabled. I finally decided to send a modest donation to St Jude's. That was a mistake. As soon as the check cleared, I started getting more "beg-letters" wanting me to "add an extra gift" to my donation. I expected this from other charities and have had this problem before, like the Sheriff's Association and the Police Chiefs Association. Never expected this from St. Jude's. I will never make this mistake again.

It's all about the kids not about the merchandise. I grew up in a poor family and am the fifth child out of eight. Only have a mother who taught me that no matter the condition you're in you can still give. Now that I'm grown I give to St. Judes and it is the only organization I will give too. For the kids ♡ I hope and pray for the kids and the familys for a speedy recovery, and peace for the parents for their children who fought the battle but found rest instead. They are in Gods hands and waiting for a family reunion.

I have been nothing short of amazed at this hospital. I don’t even know how to adequately give them the recognition they deserve. This is truly, the best hospital I have ever stepped foot in. I’m a licensed medical professional as well. So inevitably, my standards are high and they have blown my expectations and surpassed them by miles. This is an organization I will donate and give to for the rest of my life, with ZERO hesitation. It holds a huge piece of our heart and I am so incredibly grateful to have them treat my son.

I’m a Uber driver. I drop a patient there and he was hurting so bad and crying. They hold him at the gate. They wouldn’t let him in. They need my driver license. They don’t even care about him crying. He’s a minor and have police beside him. It happened Saturday on May 24 -6 PM

Yelp
I've heard about SJCRH for a long time, but until recently knew little other than its reputation for treating children with cancer. Recently, a family member was admitted, so now I'm part of the journey that most never even want to imagine could happen to them. In the midst of the grief and anxiety, I've learned many things, most of which will go unreported in this review. For yelp purposes, I'll note: 1.) I never have met so many compassionate and competent people in one day, and I visit medical-care settings as a regular part of my work. The chief example is the surgeon who spent more than one hour with my family in a post-surgery consult. Who does that? Most procedures for family, I'm lucky if I get a phone call that lasts up to sixty seconds. The kindness extends all the way to cafeteria workers and valet-parking attendants. 2.) It's really true that the family does not receive a bill. Sure, the hospital will pursue every insurance reimbursement possibility. But, in the end, the family will owe $0. If we could make this happen for every life-changing medical crisis in our nation, I can't help but believe there would be so much less grief, and so much more energy released for healing and productivity. 3.) As I've shared our story, I've found many people in communities near and far support St. Jude with regular donations or special fundraisers. From the grandfather of current patient, please know how impressed I am by the breadth and depth of support. Those of you who support SJCRH are doing a great service to children from near and far. Thank you!

Yelp
Natural Anti-Cancer Therapy Dr. Johanna Budwig left us in 2003, at the age of 95, after being nominated six times for the Nobel Prize in medicine. She cured cancers in "terminally ill" patients in her homeland of Germany; even patients that the establishment had surrendered to fate, and claimed were "untreatable". She did not just cure specific or rare cancers. She cured all types of cancer, and she did it relatively quickly, cheaply, easily, and permanently; using only non-toxic ingredients, which had no adverse effects. The Budwig Protocol There are two parts of the Budwig Protocol that are used concurrently. One of them is a natural medicine, which is a blend of something containing high amounts of sulfur proteins, and flax seed oil to provide safe omega-3 oils in the appropriate levels. Fish oil is avoided because there is a high risk of impurities, it is always rancid from heavy industrial processing, and it can dangerously upset the balance of the omega oils further. Dr. Budwig discovered that the body will synthesize omega-3 from flax seed oil in the exact quantity that it needs, and in the proper ratio with other omega oils. This medicine is normally taken orally, but in the most terminal cases, Dr. Budwig was also known to have given large doses of pure flax seed oil in enema form. The other phase of the Budwig Protocol is a special diet. Dramatic results are usually seen within 90 days, and sometimes within a week. Patients should continue the regimen for a minimum of 6 months, regardless of a disappearance of symptoms. "...I investigated the high temperature treatment for fish oils, for the purpose of making them keep longer, and killing their fishy taste. I came to the conclusion that these oils do great harm to the entire internal glandular system, as well as to the liver and other organs and are therefore not suitable for human consumption." -- Dr. Johanna Budwig, Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Disease The Medicine: Dr. Johanna Budwig recommended the following meal, once a week for people of good health, as a cancer preventative. It was required for cancer patients as part of her protocol, wherein it was consumed at least once a day, although twice was preferred. This nutritional therapy is called the "Flax Seed Muesli", and it can be blended into a smoothie. Since genuine quark cheese is not available in most countries, see our later recommendations for alternatives to quark cheese. Flax Seed Muesli: Add 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of freshly ground flax seeds to a bowl. Make certain to only use flax seeds that have been freshly ground. Next, add a mixture of fresh organic fruits (any fruits that are in season, such as apples, berries, peaches, grapes etc.) Never use bananas, because Dr. Budwig felt that bananas quickly push the blood sugar level high in cancer patients. Take 3 tablespoons of flax seed oil and mix it with 100 grams (about 7 tablespoons) of quark. Add about 3 tablespoons of unhomogenized ("creamline") milk to create a smooth mixture. It is best to blend it, in order to get it mixed most thoroughly. More flax seed oil may be used, depending upon personal taste, but if the quark does not fully absorb the oil, then more has been used than is needed. Add the resultant mixture to the bowl. You may optionally improve the flavor by adding vanilla or cinnamon. The latter will help to regulate blood sugar. Add some organic nuts on top. All organic nuts are fine, but peanuts are the least helpful. A cancer patient should not be concerned about getting too much flax. Dr. Budwig regularly created foods using flax seeds, but readers should beware of the flax that is used in modern foods. Flax should never be cooked, and it should not be stored after it has been ground, because its otherwise beneficial oils become rancid easily. This means that the flax found in retail foods is virtually always harmful, and it worsens cancers. The companies that are selling it as a healthy ingredient must know this. Yelp
Went over there today to ask about the Pavilion. The guard at the Jackson entrance couldn't have been more rude or incompetent. I would expect that all would exhibit the exemplary service at St. Jude from the CEO to the guard. Very disappointing. Had the same type experience a few years back at the McDonald house on Alabama.

Yelp
I was a contributor to St. Judes on a monthy $19.99 dontation until they sent me a 'Survey' that was so personally invasive that I saw they were phishing. The information they asked for was nothing short of a data breach! I tried to contact St. Judes to cancel/complain and was put on hold..hold..hold. I then tried to login to my St. Judes account to make sure I wouldn't get calls etc. and it said 'No account found'..?? I've been getting a rash of calls and strange mailings since signing up. They won't stop calling. Even my Cell carrier alerts the number as a scam. There is NEVER a name on my caller ID. ??? They call from different exchanges with the reps (scammers' asking for me by name... Call after call after call. If this is such a fine charity, how is it that their CEO makes $1,500,000.00 a year and 'Bonuses'? If you look hard into their IRS filings you'll find that '30%' goes to fundraising, '20%' goes into a reserve fund and on '50%' goes directly to patient care. There are many charities that give up to '100%' directly to the causes. Million Dollar execs while they harass you for your $20 a month... I'm not a fool. I'm not contributing to a '50%' charity that keeeps spamming.

Yelp
Looked up this so called charity on an official government website and not only do parents of these kids have to beg ones in their community for money but also many file bankruptcy. St judes doesn't cover all bills for family but the IRS says that over23 percent goes to fundraising and they have over a 5.2 billion dollar reserve and not much goes to research. IRS claims better kid cancer charities to donate to are Philadelphia kids cancer institute, maybe not the correct name, but definitely the kids one in Philly as almost all their donations go to treatment and research. Judes won't even pay for a hotel room for travel unless you live over 500 miles away as most kids treated are from their metro area so they can avoid paying parents bills. All this is documented. Other hospitals around the country take kids from all over the world and are making better advancements in cancer research. Please do your homework before donating. I'm sure they have helped a lot of kids, I'm just saying other institutions make better use of the donations.

Yelp
St. Jude's My reason for this review is personal. I'm hoping the Yelp Community will understand. More than 70 years ago, Danny Thomas a entertainer couldn't find work. When his despair grew he turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and he prayed. Danny's prayer marked a pivotal moment. Afterwards he began finding work, becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film and television in his day. He was on Make Room for Daddy, later known as The Danny Thomas Show.  Danny used his fame to fulfill his vow and to change the lives of thousands of children and families. In 1962, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened in front of a crowd of 9,000 in Memphis, Tenn.  The mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. I'm not saying I give a lot of donations. At least not at this time. I just want to say I support them. I don't take that statement lightly. If I can't verify the not for profit's ability to use my donations appropriately I would not give.

Yelp
This place feels like a big hug for families dealing with childhood cancer. You are not billed when you come st. Jude and they offer housing and food while you stay here. This hospital make children feel more welcome and isn't scary like city hospitals can be. The walls are filled with artwork from teens who are St. Jude patients and photographs of cancer warriors. The walls can be very inspiring. St Jude offers concierge services that will run errands for you while your child is receiving treatment. Upon arrival you are greet by a nurse guide that will show you around the hospital and prepare you for your "new routine". The doctors here are some of the best doctors in the world and listen to your questions and concerns.. they do a great job at explaining things. St. Jude helped save my child's life and I can not thank them enough for everything they do for children and families during the worst time of their lives. Thank you st Jude

Yelp
We have been supporters of St Jude Children's Researh Hospital for many years and my wife retired from St Jude in 2019 so we've gotten to know a lot about this amazing place. I actually worked on a project myself their for a year, with Microsoft, on their server system as well as my honey & I started an ran annual fundraiser "Sailing for Hope". I don't have nearly enough space on this review to share so many of the stories of what I've experienced at St Jude and why I am so enthusiastic about supporting this place idlf miracles but if you're somehow not familiar with this place here's the very basics. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, TN, is a world premier pediatric cancer research center. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. The focus is 100% on the children and once treated there those kids are followed up for life and no family ever pays St. Jude for anything. It's truly an amazing place with some awesome people and their commitment to the kids is unlike anything I've ever experienced. They do all this with the support from people and I'm dropping this review to share a really easy way that everyone who uses Amazon to help that doesn't cost them anything. It"s the Amazon Smile program and if you shop at Amazon, like I do, then every time you order something you can make sure a donation goes to St. Jude. AmazonSmile is a simple way for you to support St. Jude every time you shop, at no cost to you. To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com on your web browser or activate AmazonSmile on your Amazon Shopping app on your iOS or Android phone (under settings on your app). On your browser, you can also add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com which will return you to start your shopping at AmazonSmile. It's a great way to support St Jude every time you shop :-) https://www.stjude.org/donate/thanks-and-giving.html?sc_icid=home-btn-donate-now

Yelp
I've donated to St Jude Research Hospital on 3 separate occasions over a 20 some year history and the amount of "junk mail" I've received after each donation has been far and above excessive. The last 2 donations were made with the caveat that I would NOT be included on any mailing lists of any sort. The amount of money WASTED on continued mailings to me requesting MORE money is quite remarkable and NOT in a good way. The money WASTED on marketing to me SHOULD have been used for patient and family care rather than trying to recruit further donations from ME. I'm DONE donating to St Jude Research Hospital because they have demonstrated to me each and every time that they cannot be responsible administrators of my charitable contributions.

Yelp
As trustee of my cousin's estate, I chose St. Jude's based on their reputation to receive a $12,058 gift from his estate. I requested a supporter plaque which was offered based on the size of the gift to be placed on the supporter's wall to acknowledge my cousin's gift. The first check for $10,000 was sent out April 20, 2022, with a cover letter from my attorney explaining the gift and our request for the plaque. A second check was sent in December of 2022 for $2,058 with a letter from me specifically requesting an acknowledgment of the gift and the plaque. It is now May 2023 and we have received nothing from St. Jude. While I still think that the medical work they do is great, they come across as totally ungrateful on the charity end.

Yelp
An example of what humanity can be at its best. I have friends who have needed the hospital and they never stop talking about how incredible the treatment is there. Survival rates are now over 80%. No one gets a bill for treatment, travel or even food and lodging. I have raised money for the hospital with a marathon run for the last ten years and could not think of a better cause. I was fortunate enough to be invited to tour the facility and it was incredibly moving. Everything is thought of to help everyone be as comfortable as possible. Some random notes to give a clue on the amount of thought: 1. Art on ceiling to help with those who are reclined being transported. 2. Transport in little red wagons for the kids to make it less traumatizing. 3. Everyone eats together in same cafeteria. No "us and them" as regards doctors/staff/families. 4. Even the food is moving. The mac and cheese recipe is from years ago when a kid wouldn't eat and the chef called his grandmother to get the recipe for the mac and cheese he liked and they still serve it that way to this day. 5. They share their research findings with facilities all over the world. Holy ground.

Yelp
Speechless! St. Jude's is AMAZING!! First time visiting and it was more than I expected. I've been a donor for 11yrs and I'm so glad I am. The entire staff was friendly, caring and empathetic. You see the commercials and read the brochures but being here today opened my eyes and understanding of what St Jude is all about. Our tour guide , Alexa, was phenomenal. She's been with St Jude 10yrs but the way she presented the history you'd think she's been here 30yrs. I took notes on each stop. Many asked if I'm a reporter and I explained I'm not a reporter I just write down important info. Like I said previously I've been a donor for 11yrs but coming here really brought it home. I now understand the most common childhood cancer - ALL. St Jude opened in 1962. At that time ALL had a survival rate of 4% but today it's 94%. The Govt gives 4% to St. Jude. St Jude biggest supporters are us- donors. So please consider giving! ALL is Leukemia....It's predicted 300k children will be diagnosed in 2018. Survival rate in other countries 20%. The goal is 60% by 2030. St. Jude has 4300 survivors. Danny Thomas, founder of St Jude, says "No child should die in the dawn of life". I couldn't agree more! If you're able to give, give to this hospital. If you get the opportunity to visit, go. You won't be disappointed and you'll see and understand why and how your donation is being used. My prayer is every child lives!

Yelp
St. Jude has been such an indescribable blessing to our family. In February 2021 my one year old granddaughter, Skylar, came to visit me from Nashville. She had a high fever and had developed a limp. She was rushed to LeBonheur Children's hospital where she was diagnosed with tumor over her kidney. She was referred to St. Jude where she was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma. St. Jude provided the parents with housing and everything they needed. It was a long, grueling process, but in July 2022, Skylar was declared cancer-free. Skylar is now 4 years old, healthy and happy! Thank you St. Jude! We cannot thank you enough.

Yelp
When stJudes and SaveTheChildren and AnimalRescue commercials all have the same tone and music it's a turnoff from donations

Yelp
I will NEVER donate to this facility. When my eight year old daughter's brain tumor returned I called St. Jude's. My daughter was denied because she was a reoccurrence. They would not see her, it would not be good for their ratings. I pleaded and was denied. My daughter lost her life to a brain tumor. I will never stop telling people how St. Jude's let our family down.

Yelp
They are doing great work here's we toured with an employee. The building is so colorful and happy. The cafeteria has great food with good prices. They operate solely on donations, which I didn't know. Every child and family that stays here is not given a single bill, it is all paid for. They are doing great work and I'm thankful I was able to tourist, I believe they give public tours, but you should call just to be sure.

Yelp
Kay Cafe - awesome place to grab a bite to eat. I often get the chicken caprese sandwich and load it up Subway-style. If you're at the hospital and feeling hungry, be sure to stop by the Kay Cafe. All meals are prepared very fast and are absolutely delicious.

Yelp
I serve as both the Executive Director and the Public Relations Director for George Mason University's chapter of Up 'Til Dawn, an event put on to benefit St. Jude at local colleges. The hospital hosted a leadership conference this past weekend and paid for students who are a part of the organization to fly to Memphis, Tennessee to visit the hospital and hear from staff and even a few patients. The hospital is gorgeous and makes patients feel at home. I could practically feel the relief and peace when I walked in. Staff is extremely friendly and understanding, and put in 100% at all times. There's no other hospital in the world like it.

Yelp
St Jude is one of the top hospitals in the world. They take a patient no matter the able to pay. They are a research hospital so there's no ER but the take good care of kids will all rare cancers and diseases. Once your a St Jude patient you will always be a St Jude patient. They give people hope where no others can!

Yelp
St Jude is hands down one of the best (if not number one) children cancer care hospitals in the country and it is located right here in Memphis. This hospital and staff can be summed up in two words- a blessing. It's a blessing to the children and their families. The facilities are amazing and child friendly. They make it fun for the children- from pulling them in wagons around the hallways to the bright colored murals and playrooms through out the hospital. The research facility is top notch and work every day to find new ways to fight childhood cancer. The story of how the hospital began is worth telling and knowing- it was a promise entertainer Danny Thomas made to St Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. He promised that he would build a shrine to St. Jude if he would help him find his way in life. Today that promise is fulfilled each day in the hospital named after the saint Danny Thomas prayed to. No child is turned away for an inability to pay. St Jude is a true Memphis treasure.

Yelp
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31: 8-9 If you are looking for charities to give to this holiday season this is a worthy charity. I want to start off by saying I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination. In fact my husband and I are in serious debt due to medical bills and an unjust legal situation where I was used as a scape goat by unethical millionaires who refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Having said that , I still believe in giving to charity. If you wait until you have "enough" you never will! Many of the medical charities in existence in my experience , the money goes into a black hole. I have given to breast cancer charities but who actually gets those free mammograms is a mystery. St. Jude Children's hospital in my experience is a worthy charity. St. Jude families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance, and no child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. Donations also cover other costs a family would typically incur while their child is being treated, including travel, housing and food. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. Every child saved at St. Jude means children saved around the world--a direct result of cutting-edge research and treatment that set the standard in treating childhood cancers. When St. Jude opened in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate for this once deadly disease is 94 perfect, thanks to research and treatment protocols developed by St. Jude. St. Jude was the first institution to produce a cure for sickle cell disease with a bone marrow transplant and has one of the largest pediatric sickle cell disease programs in the country. St. Jude is the first center to receive government approval for a unique transplant procedure that makes it possible for parents who are not exact matches to be bone marrow donors for their children. I also know some volunteers and one family who have been here. The child eventually died of cancer. It was a rare form. But she was able to be treated like a child not like a sick person. If you know a child who is sick or even an adult the worst thing you can do is act like you are sad and worried. The workers and volunteers do their best to be cheerful and create a child friendly environment so they can still be children. Still it is taxing on the employees and volunteers they need extra help. This is a worthy charity and I highly recommend you give or volunteer or both.

Yelp
I love the nurses, social workers, and doctors. Our visits are always quick. Oh my goodness and the cafeteria.... I always want everything I see. Today I got the vegetarian pot pie, macaroni and cheese, fried okra and carrot cake. I would have gotten more but I was like maybe I'm going a little overboard.

Yelp
Kudos to this outstanding hospital. Eighty-five cents of every dollar goes towards research and treatment. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was rated as the number ONE pediatric cancer care hospital in the country by Parents Magazine. Another kudos to THAT special girl, Marlo Thomas for her dedication to her mission to help children. THAT lady (or girl, if you so wish!) rocks! I well up with tears when watching her commercials for St. Jude's and when visiting the St. Jude's web site. Yes, I realize economic times are tough, yet, times are always tougher for some child. Yelp
I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran living in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, Ohio and was donating $$20.00 a month hoping it would help make a difference. I don't think so....at least once a week I started receiving an envelope with a child's picture and of course asking for additional $$$$. The cost of material and postage wipes out my monthly donation. I have requested several times to STOP my donations since they must have money to burn with all their mailings. After four months St. Jude Hospital is STILL charging my checking account $20.00 a month. I am so pissed that such an organization would be so difficult to deal with. I am on Veterans Disability and have a hard time making ends meeting as it is, but still hoped I could make a difference. WRONG WRONG WRONG. HOW ABOUT A COUPLE MONTHS REFUND!!!!

Yelp
Hospital food, yuck right! Not at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. I'm luck since I serve as a volunteer there I get to have lunch on them. And it is awesome. The Kay Cafe. It's huge with around 500 seats. Danny Thomas wanted everyone to eat together at the hospital so you'll see patients, families, doctors and scientists all in the same place. There are 8 executive chefs in Memphis and 4 of them work at St. Jude. How awesome is that!? There are 16 different areas to get food and it is widely diverse. You can get the usual hot dogs and fries for the kids or freshly made pizza out of the pizza oven...Or super salads (made with local vegetables), to Asian, Korean, Indian, a full deli and bakery and desserts to die for. Today's special area for me was the omelet to order bar. I got my veggie egg omelet and a croissant at bakery. Hum. Hum to say the least. Here's the bad news kids, it not open to the public. With that said, it's a great service to the children, their families and the beloved people who work at St. Jude. Thanks much to Kay jeweler so for this new cafeteria!

Yelp
My son is a patient here. I will say this. A comment below was posted that read if we did not rate this 5 stars we are a monster. (I was curious why she would say that? My son is a patient here and I would not give it a straight 5. That does not make us a monster?) We are not monsters. As a matter of fact we are grateful for the blessing that my son was chosen to be selected to be treated her at St Jude. We enjoy everything that we are blessed with. We volunteered for research to be done. So far all is looking wonderful. The staff here has been wonderful. We have had some staff that have not been pleasant but we have addressed that and have moved on. The reason I give this a 5 star is because there are some areas to tweek but over all it is an amazing place. But they are areas that need to be addressed. Shuttles, nurses, administration, but over all it is a lovely place. This is an amazing place to be if we wanted our son to fight this fight. We have enjoyed our stay and are more than grateful to have been invited and offered healthcare that as a single mother I would not be able to afford. My son has brain cancer and has a foundation of Christ. It has kept us strong. I pray my son beats his cancer and lives an amazing life. Thank you St. Jude for being here for us.

Yelp
For number big 300, I wanted to review an awesome place that I hold dearly to my heart. St. Jude's is an amazing place. I have had the opportunity to volunteer here while I was in college. It holds a very special place in my heart. While this is the place for all the top doctors and nurses and top researchers to hang out; the kids that receive services here are truly amazing. I wish that I would emulate their sense of spirit, and optimism on life. One of the reasons why I love donating my time, and money here is that St. Jude receives about 84 cents to every dollar donated. This means more money for research, travel expenses, treatments and hospital visits. Oh, and no family is ever turned away for financial reasons. If you ever have an opportunity to volunteer for St. Jude's, I strongly urge you to. It will change your life forever.

Yelp
I came here for a 2 week rotation through school, but I definitely got to experience the visitors side of things. FIrst off, the staff are INCREDIBLY friendly. And secondly, the establishment is ginormous and spacious. The cafeteria is immense! there are thousands of options to choose from. They have every single type of food you would like and more. but most importantly of all, they have a starbucks! yums. The walls of the entire institution are beautifully painted with wonderful children scenes that kids and adults (like myself) find pleasant. The waiting areas are adequately constructed with age-appropriate playing areas. They even have wii games and books on the floor for the inpatient children to use. The staff here are incredible, not just the pharmacists but the valet parkers, the nurses, the receptionists, the administration. If you ever have to be here for any sort of reason, they definitely make your stay and your visit more than welcome! St Jude's is definitely a world class establishment.

Yelp
St Jude Childrens' Research Hospital is a special place. The dedication and commitment of the staff to being supportive, helpful, and to do all that they can to help their patients is amazing. They know taking care of patients is more than treatments but having a caring smile to lift morale. It is really a noble and inspirational hospital that cares for children facing life threatening conditions regardless of race, religion, creed, and ability to pay. It is a special place indeed.

Yelp
They always find the greatest people to work for them. My sister has Sickle Cell and use to go there when we were younger. I have not been to the hospital in a while but whenever I meet someone that works there...they have the best attitudes!!! Not sure what the screening process is, but keep it up St. Jude. You guys ROCK

Yelp
My son is a St. Jude patient. He was diagnosed in Sep. 2003 with a baseball-sized malignant brain tumor, 3 days after his 9th birthday. They performed emergency surgery hours after the MRI that revealed the tumor, it was big and the swelling was so severe he was lapsing into a coma. We live in San Diego and I never imagined us traveling to Memphis for treatment, we sought opinions at CHLA, UCSF, Rady Children's in San Diego, and Children's Nat'l Medical Center in DC. We ended up taking him to Memphis because at that time, they had a treatment available nowhere else in the U.S. that involved use of a lower dose of radiation to his brain and a treatment duration of 8 months instead of 2+ years that was producing higher survival rates than anything we could get elsewhere. The lower dose of radiation was the clincher, all radiation amounts to brain damage, and is particularly devastating to the developing brains of young children. We had great insurance coverage and did not choose St. Jude because of the financial benefits. My son is 19 now and in a couple of months he will be a 10-year survivor of this tumor. Simply put, St. Jude saved his life and with better quality than he could have gotten anywhere else in the world at that time. He just graduated high school this past June and he is about to enter college, something that 10 years ago I did not believe was possible. I do not believe he would be in this situation if we had gone ahead with the treatments available in CA at the time of his diagnosis. The treatment he did then is now available in CA and other places. St. Jude is simply the best of the best and our family owes them a debt we can never repay. They do operate using clinical trials, and they only treat patients that they have an available treatment for and expertise with. They do not say in their ads that they will take any patient, they state very clearly that "no patient will be turned away because of race, creed or inability to pay". They will bill your insurance if you have any and take whatever they get, a patient will never see a bill. They are privately funded, because of this they are not held hostage by the insurance companies/hmo's. In addition to patients that have conditions they've developed treatments for, they will also take patients who have rare diseases that have no available treatments and develop a custom treatment protocol for them. We also know of patients from other countries they will accept who have diseases for which there is no good treatment in their home countries. I know of no other organization that does this. As of July 2013, they have a 3/4 rating on Charity Navigator: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12847 I encourage those who take issue with the CEO salaries to calculate those salaries as a percentage of revenue brought in and compare against similar organizations. St. Jude has huge operating costs and large financial reserves, part of this is so that when they take on a patient they are guaranteed the funding to finish their treatment. Some of the leukemia protocols are in excess of 3 years, St. Jude houses and feeds these families for the complete duration of treatment. St. Jude will accomodate up to four people in any patient housing. If the patient is in the hospital, up to four other family members may stay in the patient housing. There is a meal allowance for use in the cafeteria, patients staying in Target House (apartments) get a weekly grocery card to offset expenses. They provide transportation to and from all of their facilities. Perhaps the very best thing of all about St. Jude was that I can say that in my entire life we've never been shown such unconditional love by complete strangers, in Memphis not only did they take care of my son but also our family in the most loving way imaginable, body and soul. There is a saying at St. Jude, you go there with one sick child and you come home with 35, we hold so many of the friends we met there so very close to our hearts, and so many we've lost. Having a child with a life-threatening illness is perhaps one of the very worst thing a parent can endure and St. Jude ministered to all of us in just so many ways, I truly believe there is no other place like St. Jude in the world.

Yelp
One of the best charities ever. Met Danny Thomas when I was a teen leading a "Walk-A-Thon" for St Jude in Knoxville, TN.

Yelp
They gave me a bunch of stickers for return envelopes with my name on them, I like stickers so I sent in a donation. But only after doing some research on Google to find out a little more about them and it seems like they are doing good things. 5 stars for them!

Yelp
Think it is unethical that they try to solicit money from a person who has been deceased since 2012. They were notified in 2014 and she was put on a " Do Not Contact List" Earlier this year they began again trying to get money. St Judes was again notified, she was again to have been put on the list but since then they have tried four months ago. While they do a good job their methods to fund it is unacceptable.

Yelp
Love st.jude our dear friend suffers from cancer and there saving her life and many others kids life's and awesome costomer service and really really sweet

Yelp
I am reading about people that have an issue with St Jude's CEO's salary. It is less than $1 million a year. For a job as big as he has, that is nothing these days. 85% of every dollar goes towards treatment and research. I have been blessed with 3 healthy sons, but I know from being diagnosed myself with bone cancer, that life can change in an instant. So for those of you complaining about the CEO's salary, I pray for you. Pray that you will never need the services of such a wonderful place for sick children.

Yelp
St. Jude is a one of a kind hospital. It is a good place with good people and a good mission. Danny Thomas forever changed the future by helping children live through cancer and we are grateful. People commenting about the CEO salary are uninformed about critical details. They should know that the last 3 CEOs spanning the last 3 decades have all worked tirelessly since the 1970s fighting disease. They are all brilliant, dedicated, highly educated and highly regarded scientists who are experts in their field and love this hospital. They have written books, created protocols which saved lives and devoted their careers to fighting cancer. They live and breath St. Jude. The deserve every penny I can assure you.
