St Mark's Coffee House

St. Mark's Coffee House is a really cool spot with an atmosphere that makes you want to hang out. The coffee is excellent, and the cookies are exceptional super fresh and unique. It's definitely a place I'm coming back to! ​The location is beautiful, and I highly recommend grabbing a seat outside for a refreshing experience. Inside, the vibe is also great, with cool lighting and what looks like a partially-fixed ceiling that surprisingly adds a vintage, charming style that people seemed to love. Plus, they have some very cool t-shirts for sale! It’s a genuinely nice place to meet friends. ​A few things kept this from being a five-star review, though. First, it can get very loud inside, with people talking quite loudly on their phones and to each other. Second, I ordered a panini sandwich, and it was just okay not the best. ​Finally, and this is the main reason for docking a star: midway through eating my sandwich, I noticed a small, very obvious hair on the plate (it looked like a mustache hair). I know these things happen, but it was enough to make me throw out the rest of my brunch. ​Despite that minor mishap and the noise level, the fantastic coffee, the amazing cookies, and the overall cool atmosphere mean I'll absolutely be giving St. Mark's another visit.

Very cute coffee shop in a nice chill location just out of downtown. I will say I’m not particularly a fan of the espresso here it’s quite acidic and sharp and I tend to prefer a smooth roast. But the Italian soda was delicious and the service was wonderful. They also had a delicious looking bakery case. Everything in there looked mouthwatering I wish I hadn’t ate before coming in.

The most disgusting matcha I ever had in my whole life. This was my first time trying with my sisters, and I was very excited to have a new spot on Staten Island. We ordered two iced matchas and they were the most disgusting we’ve ever had. I think they need to have a more experience barista that knows how to work with Matcha. It’s a shame because I was looking forward to this being my new spot. I felt bad to complain because the guy was super nice and the pastries were good, but honestly, the drinks were disgusting

I have been coming to St Marks for a little over a year now, the staff is always friendly, drinks are good, and the place is always pretty clean. My biggest issue started around two months ago when I was unable to connect to the WiFi from both of my devices. I tried everything to troubleshoot the connection from my phone and iPad , but it appeared to be network issue not an issue with my devices. I spent a good 30 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong until I gave up. I went in again today and had the same issue, I believe other folks were having the same issue as well as a couple of people went up to the counter to see what was going on. The barista was very kind, he tried to restart the router but even after waiting 15 minutes to connect again it did not work again. I did have a new phone and laptop this time so I know for a fact it’s not a device issue. It sucks because I had already bought my coffee and was ready to study, and I needed WiFi to do so. I definitely think this a great place to hang out and meet up with a friend, however if you’re looking to do something that requires internet I would recommend going somewhere else.

I stopped here by chance, and I can’t wait to come back. Got two bagels and a coffee, but while waiting for the bagels I got tempted with the pastries and OMG! They were so amazing! Fresh, buttery, full of flavor croissants. The service was great and the ambience made me think that I could come back with a book, friends and/or family. Prices were pretty reasonable. Thank you

St. Marks has long been a meet-up hub for Denver locals. The back door opens to connect the patio with Thin Man, the bar next door. A hesitantly gothic theme is starting to emerge. You will run into a few artists here. Hosts great events. Located on a great block. Take a walk through the historic mansions nearby!

This cafe is tucked away near City Park and offers a respite to the community of all ahes who frequent the cafe. It has a vibe both chic and welcoming for those desirous of a place to chat and a place to work. The pastry and food offerings are what you would expect from a popular coffehouse; however their selection of syrups are severly diminished for cofee compared to those for alcohol. Despite the hard seats, I'd come again. Has inconsistent wifi and the ceiling may trhow up on you if it rains.

This coffee shop has been around for decades and it has become a major hangout for me. Each morning the owner bakes fresh cookies, scones, croissants, etc. They have paninis, bagels and sometimes soup. In addition to coffee drinks, they have beers and Italian sodas. But for me it's the environment. It takes advantage of our climate with garage doors on each end that can be opened in nice weather. There are large patios in both the front and back. Marble tables line the walls providing work and eating space. The back patio has picnic tables too. It's a great place to meet friends or hang out alone.

This used to be one of my favorites and it's a longtime staple in the Denver coffee house scene. Unfortunately, I returned after many years and was really disappointed. My drink was just okay (white mocha) and same with my partners. I forgot about their styrofoam policy and that really disappointed me. It's 2023, don't gaslight your customers for needing a to go coffee and not bringing their own cup. We should all be committed to sustainability and doing the best we can for earth. Styrofoam def is NOT it. I gave 3 stars just cause the memories and good times of years past, but if it was based on this recent night it was have been a lower rating. There are far better coffee shops in Denver these days!

Service was subpar. I asked for a croissant to which he replied we're out. I pointed to the last one. He put it on a plate. It wasn't fresh nor soft. Maybe a 10 sec nuke? I don't know, but that with the coffee left me feeling unwelcomed. At one point the barista went through some doors, I'm guessing it was the restroom, but the slam made me jump and gave me the vibes he is disgruntled. The patrons seemed nice. I would have overlooked the bad day that staff member seemed to be having I didn't return to find out .The difficulty finding parking and hard bench left me wishing I was in a different cafe.

One of the greats for a reason. St. Mark's has the best staff, who make it safe and welcoming, nice music and ambiance, and good food and drinks at reasonable prices. I'm a fan.

I truly love St. Mark's. Perfect for the nostalgic and masochist in us all. I've been coming here for a long time indeed and it's been the same all these years. Burnt coffee, disagreeable seating, surly baristas. St. Mark's has never been concerned with your comfort or approval and never will be, which has a certain beguiling charm to it. A dirty little gem in a graveyard of simulacra. Try the cookies.

The place seemed cute but the barista didn't know what she was doing. I don't know if the whole place is this terrible or if it's just the one person but I'm not sure how they stay in business. Maybe it's a good place for tea drinkers? Everything we ordered was immediately thrown in the trash. The cappuccinos were just giant cups of watery milk that were steamed so hot that we burned our tongues.

My favorite place to do meetings, and catching up with friends. Paninis and Italian sodas are great!

There's a guy working the counter who is consistently rude and nasty. If he hates his job so much he should quit. I asked for a chocolate croissant because there were some croissants on a plate in front of a sign that said 'chocolate croissants'. He barked at me 'we don't have any chocolate croissants. You need to look around the corner there!' This is the latest in a series of rude remarks I've heard him make to customers.

I was here today for the first time and there was a line to order however it moved fast. I had the white mocha which was delicious however if you order to go you get an open styrofoam cup. Glad I drank it there and didn't really take it to go. The almond peach croissant was decent. It is specious inside and good to meet larger groups.

I love this place. Small, local owned, quirky fun place to grab a hot cider, coffee, chai... They have good muffins and sandwiches, croissants, cookies, you name it. Skip the big chain places and stop in this place that has been in business for decades!

The latte was lukewarm and the croissant was a bit doughy. The atmosphere was chill and probably why it got the three stars. The barista seemed uninterested and not on their game. Maybe it was an off day for them? Hard to tell.

My fiancé and I moved to the neighborhood about a year ago and we go to St. Marks, or their sister spot The Thin Man, almost once a week. The staff are so friendly, the paninis are DELICIOUS, and I'm just truly happy to live near a cute coffee shop that's so reasonably priced. Definitely check this spot out

I've been dying to try this place for ages because it looks cute from the outside. I wish I hadn't bothered. The croissant was the most dense and underbaked pastry I've ever had, it was like biting into dough with a croissant crust. I ordered a latte but was given regular coffee with milk. When I asked about this, I was assured it was a latte. It's greatest sin? It tasted gross. My to-go latte also came in a styrofoam cup. A $2 or $3 coffee? Sure, I'll take styrofoam. But I have been accustomed to expecting more when I'm ordering a $4 - $5 cup. I did not finish either the croissant or coffee, a first for me.

St. Marks is appealing to me because it isn't trying to be like every all-white-interior, styled by IKEA, $7 latte coffee shop. I've only been in once, but they seem utterly uninterested in doing anything trendy. Yes, this means the coffee isn't the best. It's also a few bucks cheaper than anywhere else in Denver. The true 5-star quality here is the cookies -- I'm the oddball that likes a thick, crunchy cookie, and St. Marks delivered.

Updating my review to 4 stars after a few more visits because they are inconsistent. For example, the pumpkin cake was really good the first time around, but kind of dry on a more recent visit. The coffee can also be a bit bland -- I guess I should stick to espresso over brewed here. The patio is still good, though!

So I had tried this place once before and was not overly impressed with it at the time but it's close to home, open late, and now with Covid, it's the only coffee shop that is open so I thought I'd give it a second try and I'm glad I did because I learned a lot. First, their menu is definitely interesting it's kind of overwhelming and all over the place as they offer a bit of everything from coffee to tea to alcohol. Their food menu is also a little strange as they offer standard things like paninis, bagels, soups and sandwiches but also offer odd things like gazpacho. Once you get past all the options, it's not so bad. The first time I came here I got some sort of coffee drink that I didn't care for. But the second time I came, I got a London fog and a pastry and it was wonderful. I came back a third time and got a London fog and a homemade rice Krispy. For both i think it was 5.20$ before tip. Not bad at all. As for the atmosphere, when I first came, they had several tables and a bunch of outlets for people who were working like myself and to be honest when the shop is at full capacity, it can look/feel overcrowded but now that it's half staffed for Covid, there is the perfect amount of space for a person to work and feel comfortable. They also have a large seating area with a front patio and a large back patio. Next door is a little bar that is connected to the coffee shop and the back patio connects the two. It's very refreshing and cool inside or out making it a great workspace. I did give the shop 4 out of 5 because of the little things I noticed when I was here the first time mentioned above but for the value, the space and the hours I would recommend it as a great homework spot.

evening coffee, that's what we want. very few coffee shops stay open to 9 or 10 pm. we're very lucky to have St. Marks in the hood when we need them. they have extensive and excellent food choices, teas, sodas, beer and wine. the neighboring restaurants and bars make it a charming way to spend the evening after a walk in city park (two blocks away). sorry to do this, but i also have some complaints... they've been in the coffee business for many years, but they haven't seemed to progress from 2nd wave to 3rd wave unfortunately. no foam in their steamed milk. no latte art. grocery store syrups. styrofoam cups??? come on man. i was disappointed in the lack of coffee passion and quality 10 years ago, and nothing has changed! how? why?

I stopped in for a latte and baked good to go. The person at the counter wasn't very friendly. He seemed somewhat annoyed to be waiting on someone. I ordered an iced oat milk latte. When it arrived, it was definitely not a latte, or at least no latte I've ever had. It looked like iced coffee with a small splash of oat milk. Even after stirring, it was still brownish black, mostly coffee color, not creamy like every other latte I've had. It tasted like iced coffee with a small splash of oat milk. I went to the restroom and dumped it and left. I will not be going there again. There are many other great coffee shops to choose from nearby.

This place has lots of tables and plugs if you're looking for somewhere to work. I've always had a solid internet connection there. Lots of flavor options for lates which are pretty inexpensive compared to the surrounding shops and isn't too crowded in the mornings. A fair amount of baked goods but the only gf option is a "raspberry bar" that tasted like someone accidentally added 3x the sugar that the recipe called for. Baristas are hit or miss, some are cool and some are kind of rude. Others, it depends on the day how they're going to act towards you. Back patio is dog friendly but they also have a smoking area, so if you're in the mood for the occasional waft of cigarette smoke with your coffee out there, go for it. A pretty lax coffee shop in general. I would get your drink "for here" or bring your own mug as they STILL use styrofoam cups.

I have a lot of favorite coffee places but this might be my number one especially late night (till 10pm). First off the coffee is great and the prices (for a Mocha anyway) are very reasonable. Love the glassware and if you bring your own cup you get an extra .40 cents off. Vibe is simple and reminds me of European cafes. Next door you can get a beer/alcohol and plenty of outdoor patio space in the front or back.

Great coffee spot in the neighborhood! They have exactly what you would expect for coffee. If you bring your own cup you get a discount! Wide variety of baked goods to choose from as well. Many different croissant flavors. If you're looking for a place to work remote this is the perfect spot with both inside and outdoor seating! Stays open fairly late and is connected to a bar (Thin Man) on the other side.

I have been a long term customer of St. Mark's trying to keep giving it a go as I desperately want to support an independent coffee shop, but It continues to be difficult. The pastries routinely are stale. If you have a unique request on Saturday mornings, such as the wifi is not working it is received as there is no issue and the customers are left looking at each other and reluctantly have to get up and leave as it is too much trouble to reboot the system. The music can be blaring as well.

Cute and friendly, slightly dingy little coffee shop that happens to be well located. The coffee drinks are just okay, and the cookies are slightly undercooked inside, even if they look delicious on the outside. I had to wait a whole 3-4 minutes at the main counter before someone showed up to take my order. Their staff was super friendly and bubbly, which is nice. Would not go back but also not having any regrets, if that makes sense. It's okay.

The guy with the ponytail working the counter this morning was a complete A**hole to my friend who is legally blind and asked a couple menu questions. I've owned several successful food service businesses and I would have fired this guy in an instant if he worked for me.

The bathroom probably hasn't been cleaned in sometime - garbage strewn throughout. Which reflects the quality of the food quite nicely. The main benefits of the place are 1) it is one of the few coffee shops in Denver open late, 2) also has a cool name - sounds bohemian and Catholic all at once, and 3) due to item number 1 there tends to be a sizable crowd in the evenings to make you feel less alone about sitting at a coffee shop past 5pm.

Cool vibes, chill music and on a warmer day the garage door window will open up for some fresh air. The tea is delicious and the Chai is made in house. To top it off, they have amazing paninis and a solid selection of beers to choose from. A patio is located in the front and the back as well. Chill enough to get stuff done but enough energy you will be sure to leave refreshed! The baristas are great as well! James Rocks!

This place has one super positive and one super negative, thus the middle-of-the-road 3 stars. The location is the one super positive. There's nothing especially great about its food or drink offering. It is solely that it's ideally located in Denver. The one super negative is the lack of consistency. If you go at one hour of the day, the employee will nail the experience; at a different hour, you could be left wondering if the person knows what hot tea is. It's, in a word, insane. Honestly I still go because they have a killer back patio and it's rarely packed with people.

Made a really nice White Mocha Latte but the Iced Coffee was okay. It was really the service that put me off. We were in line waiting and Barista was really nice and chatting up the people ahead of us. Only for us to get up there and start ordering and he was dismissive. Before I could even finish the second order he was already making the first and messed up my coffee order. I didn't feel welcomed in this space and don't see myself going back.

Definitely don't spend your money here. We spent $15 on a mocha and dirty chai and were severely disappointed. The mocha was super bitter and the dirty chai tasted like neither espresso nor chai... if it was a blind taste test we would've guessed it was ice water. As far as atmosphere goes there are zero vibes to be had and the place looks like a prison rec room. If you have a shred of self worth come to Hooked on Colfax instead (not sponsored).

So I'm not a religious type guy (as people who claim to be spiritual are wont to say). But in trying to figure out why it's called "St. Marks" -- instead of simply asking the barista behind the counter and getting reliable info -- I received a message from god to "figure it the #!*&%^ out" myself. And here's what I'm thinkin': In the New Testament (St.) Mark was the son of Mary "in whose house the first Christians used to gather." Get it? . . . "in whose house the first Christians used to gather." So I think I just had a coffee conference in a Christian meeting house. Argh. Well, I liked the 1/2 a ham and cheese croissant and the 1/2 herb and mushroom croissant (which I shared with my fellow meet-ee). Topped off with a very competently made almond syrup latte (breaking my NYE resolution to stay away from added refined sugar) it was a fan-worthy experience. So, you go you Christians. You're doing very well in bringing us together whether we're talking about Christ / Suleimani / Trump or anything else. Sign me, David "Unitarianly" M.

Great place to stop in early in the morning for a cup of coffee and a pastry. Their croissants are always delicious and great options with both savory and sweet. We bring our own cups for a discount. Nice place to have in the neighborhood with great indoor and outdoor seating. Went for lunch once recently as well and the panini was pretty cheap but had great flavor and was a good value for the cost.

Come for the coffee, stay for the outdoor space! I love taking folks here for a quick, cheap coffee and laid back conversation! You can easily spend hours at an airy indoor table or one of the many seating options outside. With a relaxed atmosphere and classic cafe menu, it's easy to keep coming back!

I like the location and vibe of St. Marks. Before I went GF I loved those big, fat cookies! Unfortunately, the coffee has only ever been okay, but the cappuccino I had recently was truly dreadful. Bitter and muddy. There was a thick layer of coffee foam on top (not silky milk foam, as it should be). My husband had a mocha and it was very bitter too. Disappointed.

I got a coconut latte with almond milk. The guy was very dismissive and not very pleasant even though I asked how his day was going. When my drink came up it was unfortunately in a styrofoam cup and tasted weak and bland. I can't even taste the coconut. For a $5.00 drink it's pretty underwhelming. Major bummer. Their bakery doesn't look very appealing either and the smell inside the place is sour. So was the barista's attitude. Probably the least friendly person I've experienced since I moved to CO. I won't be back and don't recommend coming here.

Burnt coffee over ice isn't coldbrew, and the styrofoam cup it came in really solidified the gas station-like quality. Pass for me, which is sad because in the past I've loved this place. Seems to have went down hill a bit.

Visiting gfrom out of town, did a bit of research walked over to St Marks coffeehouse. A really wonderful local neighborhood find. I am a really good cook and they have a Jalapeño cheddar scone that is OUTSTANDING. Coffee and service was awesome as will. If I'm ever back in Denver I'll def stop in again

Old school - and I love old school. Feels like a place I would have gone in college or grad school. Independent. Very friendly workers. And great coffee. I think some of the best coffee in Denver. It's dark roasted for the shop in San Francisco. None of this wimpy, precious medium roast crap. Real coffee to put hair on your chest. They also bake their own pastries on site.

A recommended place that fell flat on its face. I was excited to check it out but don't think I'll be coming back. For one, the coffee was just not good. Second, as others have noted, I was shocked to see styrofoam cups. It not only felt cheap but made me feel like my coffee was from a convenience store - both taste and feel. Also as others pointed out, the staff wasn't overly friendly. I was there for work so I want to point out that the WiFi was dragging for me. On the contrary, the place was full. I could understand why people like the ambiance. It is definitely more for socializing than working in my opinion. They have a patio in both the front and back.

My first time here and from first impressions, it was decent. I came here for something refreshing and settled on a mango Italian soda with a piece of carrot cake. The soda was definitely refreshing and the carrot cake was a middle of the road piece of cake. From what it looks like, the prices seem very reasonable with quite a bit of choice on the menu and indoor/outdoor seating. This seems to be a working coffee shop with 90% of the people there on their laptops/writing. The interior seems a bit run down and in need of maintenance. It's a good location. Check it out for yourself.

Aside from the issue I'm presenting in this review, what's possibly even more sad is that likely only half of the people reading this are going to find it valuable and will think twice before they support this establishment, and the other half are going to find it humorous and shrug it off because ignorance is bliss (which makes them an equal contributor to the problem.) I suspect this because not even 3 hours after I wrote this review, a reader wrote me a condescending "compliment" about it and immediately blocked me before I could respond. I'm just going to assume this cowardly person works here. STYROFOAM to-go cups. This is 2019 and we live in a privileged society where any type of recyclable or compostable material is available at arm's reach. WHY in our dying earth's precious name is this business still using STYROFOAM? I see old reviews from 2008 where people are complaining about this, yet still nothing has changed. I can't comprehend the level of foolishness. Are the owners really more concerned about being frugal than the impact of their carbon footprint, or are they just naive to what's going on in the world? Does the word, "landfill" trigger ANY sort of response for anyone that works here? Why are we all continuing to move along through life with a "business as usual" mindset, when we are at the point of no return for reversing the damage we've caused? And don't even get me started on the mediocrity of the coffee when there are literally thousands of local roasters out there serving specialty-grade beans and actually care about the coffee farmers being paid fair wages. Why are people still drinking this mud when there are sooo many tastier, more sustainable options out there for nearly the same price? Y'all, if there's a small bone in your body that enjoys quality things and you have even an ounce of concern about the global crisis we're in (11-20 years before sh*t hits the fan, seriously,) you should educate yourselves before stepping foot in this place. As a small business owner myself, I'm ALLLLL about supporting local...but management here is clearly stuck in their ways and unwilling to grow with the times. It's little changes like being mindful about what type of disposable materials you use that starts movements amongst communities and creates a global impact. Laugh all you want, banshees. Call me pretentious for giving a damn and trying to make people wake up, I don't care. You won't be laughing when you and our future generations find out I'm right.
