On the Grid : St Mary's Cathedral

"With three spires able to be seen from most places in Edinburgh, St. Mary’s Cathedral is hard to miss. It’s the mother church of the Diocese of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church and opens its doors every day to parishioners and visitors. St. Mary’s was completed in 1879 thanks to an architectural competition that saw Sir George Gilbert Scott winning with his final design inspired by early Gothic churches and abbeys of Scotland. Be sure to check out the Paolozzi stained glass window, designed by Eduardo Paolozzi which, on a sunny day, transforms the floor below with a prismatic pattern of colours." - Chris Brodt

One of the most beautiful Cathedrals I have had the pleasure of visiting in the UK. Stunning art throughout with some amazing stations, central arch and statues. The relics and shrine to St. Andrew make it a significant place for pilgrims, alongside the relic of St. Faustina.

Was a wonderful celebration for Easter. Had the pleasure of Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews and Edinburgh presiding over mass. The facilities are incredible. There is a great bookshop there, a cafe attached and parking garage right across the street. We parked in the garage under John Lewis & Partners building on Leith St. Keep you ticket and use it as your pass to get back into the garage from street level. Worked out well for my senior parents. Parking garage to church was 1/10th of a mile. Get there early as it's very popular. They did have an organ/trumpet player, and local choir.

This church is beautiful and great. The sanctuary was great and the organ looked great. This had a true feeling of a house of prayer and less tourist like. Several people in silent prayer. True space for prayer. Lovely opportunity to light candles and pray for those you love and care about. Wonderful gift shop and you could could easily spend some good money in there. The server in shop was most friendly and helpful. Overall this place is one of the hidden gems in Edinburgh. Thank you to the community of St Mary cathedral.

Beautiful cathedral, seems a very active worship place. There's a reception room with useful information about the cathedral and the Catholic faith. There's a book shop and other items as well. Would love to go inside later.

St Mary's Catholic Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the seat of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. It's a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture, designed by James Gillespie Graham and opened in 1814. The cathedral is a vibrant center of the Catholic community in Edinburgh. It offers a variety of masses and services throughout the week, including daily mass, Sunday mass, and special services for holy days. It is beautiful to be here.

This is a beautiful Cathedral and well worth a visit to explore every corner. I would love too attend a mass here and also hear their great organ. There is a large store on site with many books and other things.

Beautiful church so glad we got to visit on our trip. We got to listen to the woman organist practice and there was a children’s area in the back of the church with books. This place was beautiful from the top to the bottom.

Yelp
I go to St Mary's Catholic Church every weekend for mass and I enjoy it a lot. Though I wouldn't necessarily consider it a cathedral, this church is big and beautiful. Mass occurs a couple times on Sunday's...I usually go at 9 am to get it done so I can enjoy the rest of my Sundays but other masses done in English happens at 12 and 730pm. I believe the 1.30 pm is the polish mass. If you prefer going on Saturdays, I believe they offer the 5.30 mass... Just check the website for the correct times. They offer other special masses and it gets crowded during important days like Easter, Christmas, ash Wednesday's, etc. This week I went to their advent mass to check out the candlelight mass...was pretty cool cause they turned off all the lights and just had candles everywhere. They also offer free concerts and if you just want to sit and listen to a really great choir, check out the 12 pm mass... A bit longer than the others though and they sing in Latin. The priests and volunteers are all nice and welcoming. They always welcome everyone whether you're Catholic or not, and the church is accessible even without mass. So if you just want to sit in a quiet place and enjoy a beautiful building, this is an awesome place to go.
