The Best Sandwiches in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"St. Paul Cheese Shop, tucked into a little Grand Avenue storefront, has one of the Cities’ most robust sandwich menus. The fennel salami is dressed with finocchiona and garlic confit; the prosciutto di parma, spread with a rich double-cream brie and olive oil, offers a true boulangerie experience." - Eater Staff

Today was my first visit—of what I’m certain will be many more—and it fully lived up to the reputation. I ordered the T. Chut Fancy (a.k.a with bacon) on the baguette, and every bite was a delight. There’s a kind of care and craft here that’s hard to come by. If you haven’t been yet, consider this your invitation. It’s absolutely worth experiencing for yourself.

Google
Best sandwiches around hands down! I’ve been coming here for years, and the sandwiches are 100% worth the hype. The Turkey club is my all-time fave, even though I’m trying to eat less meat. I’d highly recommend ordering it with a cheddar cheese add-on! It’s a game changer. The staff at the Cheese Shop are charming, helpful, and friendly. Whenever my friends visit from out of town, the Cheese Shop is a non-negotiable stop. Highly recommend a visit!

Emily Miller

Google
I love it here! The turkey club sandwich is so solid and what I find myself craving for every lunch (or the barbacoa burrito from the meat shop down the street). It’s a great vibe and the staff is always ready to answer questions.

Google
I would eat here everyday for the rest of my life if I was able to. Amazing amazing sandwiches. And amazing amazing staff. A very large selection of cheese. A lot of it imported and stuff you can’t find at other shops. They have other items too like jam, crackers, and olive oil ect. Everything you need for the perfect cheese plate. They’re very knowledgeable on cheese too and will gladly help you find what you need. I always get the surprise sandwich cause I can never decide. All their sandwiches are so so gooooooood.

Google
The word needs to get out about this place! How did it take me this long to hear about it?!? What a gem! We recently heard about this place and had to stop in. I had always assumed they only sell cheese but they also do simple but delicious sandwiches. They had at least a dozen sandwich choices and it was honestly hard to pick. We went for dinner but I know this place would be even better for lunch. The staff was helpful in helping us pick what to order and the tables out front were all you need to scarf down a sandwich quickly. My only gripe was the bread being a bit tough. I do like a good chew to my bread but I think it was a bit tougher since it was the end of the day. This is the most minor critique because I would eat that same sandwich again with the same bread if I had it right now.

Raven Perkins

Google
Amazing place! Great place to find nice quality cheeses, meats, and toppings like preserves! Staff was super friendly and helped me make cheese choices based on my likes and have suggestions like how long to let cheeses sit at room temp for best enjoyment. Wonderful place, will definitely be coming again!

Google
My husband went in for us and he mentioned how kind the cashier was and how peaceful and clean the space was. The food was absolutely delicious and came out quick. We will definitely be back and we recommend. P.S. we tried to turkey club and Cubano. We paid $32.00 for both, so that seemed a bit pricey, but it was good so I won't complain.

Google
Just stopped by for the sandwich of the week and it was amazing, especially the cheese. Highly recommend for all your sandwich and cheese needs.

Yelp
I loveee cheese so naturally I had to come but what actually blew me away was their tomato soup that came with my melt! It was the perfect consistency, seasoned really well, and can still taste the freshness of the tomatoes. For the melt, I got the truffle that came with double cream brie, gruyere, mushrooms, honey and black truffle. Everything was melted to perfection and the truffle was delicious without being overwhelming. The bread had a really good crunch to give some texture with the melty gooey cheese. Despite having so much cheese, it wasn't a super heavy meal. More of a take out place. There's a couple tables outside to eat but it was also really windy and hot the day I went so I ate pretty quickly.

Yelp
One of my favorite sandwich places in all of the TC! Whenever we are St. Paul and thinking about lunch, this place is on the shortlist. Parking is easy, as there is a free public lot about 50 feet away, and street parking is also available. The workers are always friendly, and often will give you cheese samples (yum). I have never had a bad sandwich here. Some favorites are the chicken salad, the prosciutto-fig-ricotta, and the sweet chorizo. Today, I ordered the Turkey club and the Sandwich of the Week, the La Tur, which had a cow, goat and sheep milk cheese with blueberry honey jam, greens and bacon. It was good, but don't get this sandwich unless you like cheeses that REALLY have that sheep flavor! There are a few small tables for 2 tucked inside by the register, and a couple of small tables outside in nice weather, but this is really more of a grab'n go place. We took these on the plane with us the next day, as we were traveling. Pro Tip: You can earn France 44 rewards at this location, just tell them you are a member when you get to the register!

Yelp
Lunch run with a coworker. The sandwiches were outstanding. She grabbed some yummy appetizers to take home. They have a wide variety of take home treats to share or enjoy alone. Service was awesome. The ambiance was a welcoming quaint market. Small outdoor seating weather permitting otherwise take and go. Bonus, free parking in the lot.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious sandwiches! My partner and I were mind blown! I got the spicymonger - it wasn't spicy to me, but a little to my partner. Great flavor mixed with a bit of sweetness and great goat cheese texture. My partner got the Turkey club and it was fantastic - well flavored, a bit of tartness from the pickled onions, and delicious sauce. We also got a sample cheese bit in the store and it was amazing. The store staff were so kind. The space is a bit small, but there's so many unique things inside. Also, I love how there's a number of lactose free cheese (goat and sheep). There's a public parking lot right next to the building and plenty of street parking.

Yelp
Small, cozy, packed with quality products and personality. I ordered a lamb sandwich and it definitely was exceptional. The guy educated me about cheese and was super kind and generous about everything. Worth going for lunch and speciality cheeses.

Yelp
This place has been on my bucket list for so so long and I finally got to try it the other day! The experience and food however, was very disappointing. The worker who helped us was kind of standoffish and didn't really help us choose which sandwiches to get. But when another couple walked in he gladly talked to them and helped them... The sandwiches that we did decide to get, literally cracked our jaws multiple times because the bread was so stale. We got the prosciutto brie sandwich ($14) & turkey club ($17). The sandwich fillings were delicious, but it was so unbearable to eat because of the stale bread. If only the bread was better this review would not have been the same. I personally would pay a lot for a delicious sandwich, but these were not worth the price. $30 for two sandwiches and we weren't even full. In all, I probably would not come back here.

Yelp
Very knowledgeable about cheeses & what they could be served with. I went in looking for a soft cheese to serve w/ a Marion berry pectin I got in Oregon & they recommended a Lake region goat cheese which was delicious!

Yelp
Hmmp I was so very excited to pop in and get a fun sandwich.... I got the grilled ham & gruyere. I was so ready for delicious'ness.... I think it might of been wonder bread. Ok no it wasn't, however it was tasteless, two slices of has that were thinner than prosciutto, and one piece of gruyere... Where's the fun? Flavor? Creativity? Ok the mini cup to tomato soup was... Hot. The chocolate chip cookie was nice. But for over $18 with no drink. I really would like something more. Dipping sauce, grainy mustard, caramelized onions .... couple house made croutons for the soup, smoked salt on the cookie... Something better..
google avatar

Yelp
They have a great selection of cheese here, and the staff is really patient and nice (': they also let us sample a few in addition to the ones they already had out. We also ordered a Brie and prosciutto sandwich which tasted amazing even though it was so simple. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Amazing mozzarella sandwich with tomato confit on fresh bread. Super friendly service. Would be a great place to pick up cheese and charcuterie for a picnic. Delicious!

Yelp
No questions we love cheese. We snack on it. Put it on sandwiches. Put on pasta. Put it in salads, Melt it. Fry it. So many options and so many ways to enjoy cheese. I had previously read about St Paul Cheese Shop. We had stopped to pick up some bread at the Breadsmith which happens to be right next door. This provided the perfect opportunity to check em out. We were also picking up some fresh pasta this day so we figured why not pick up a block of parmesan cheese after getting some fresh baked bread. Inside is fairly small but filled with different cheeses. Besides their cheese, the big attraction here is their sandwiches. They make fresh sandwiches on fresh baked Breadsmith bread and some of their excellent cheese. Had we not already had food plans we definitely would have picked up a sandwich too. In fact now that I think about it, we should have. Next time. We picked up both Parmesan and Pecorino. Bonus as they were both on sale. We'll be back soon for a sandwich and more cheese.

Yelp
I wanted to try a new sandwich shop when I had stumbled across this place. Their sandwiches seemed very unique so I was intrigued to try it! I cannot remember the name of the 2 sandwiches I had gotten but both were tasty! I definitely want to come back and try other sandwiches here.
google avatar

Yelp
A cute little shop with a small, but good, cheese selection, specialty foods, and sandwiches. While the sandwiches aren't quite my jam, they have a unique selection if you want to try something different. Definitely recommend checking them out if you are in the area!

Yelp
Didn't get a photo of the sandwich, but so good!! I got the mozzarella and tomato melt. It was so good and the bread was to die for. You could tell it was real fresh bread. It came with a small shot of tomato soup and was super delish. The workers were so nice and there's also a student discount there. Even better they gave us free cookies!! Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Really nice sandwiches, the service was awesome. The bread of the sandwich is a little tough to get through (and I love it) but all in all it is great.

Yelp
Take-away experience during pandemic: Ordering two sandwiches and two small bags of potato chips over the phone and paying for them was simple and quick - Thanks to Donovan! Curb-side pick-up was easy and quick, too. Man-friend said his roast beef sandwich was okay, but it had wayyyyyyy too much mustard on it! So much mustard in fact, that it drowned out any other "flavor" of the sandwich. He was surprised by the spicy "kick" of the flavor of chips he ordered (the Buffalo Blue ones) and said he would not likely order that flavor again. I had the turkey, cranberry chutney and brie sandwich and I really enjoyed it! I also really enjoyed the sour cream and onion flavored chips and would definitely order them again!

Yelp
I get get enough of this wonderful place! Incredible melts and sandwiches, delicious house-made dips and spreads, tempting imported dry goods, and an intriguing and expertly-curated selection of cheeses make for a winning combo. I've been coming here for about 6 years, and I have fond memories of rewarding myself with a gooey, decadent melt after a long day of studying during college. I recently tried the turkey club after a strenuous bike ride, and I consumed it in about 2 minutes. It was pure bliss and perhaps the best sandwich I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I'd recommend getting it with Barber's cheddar. I'm also partial to the crispy speck surprise. It's salty and satisfying. Honestly, you just can't go wrong here. Everyone is helpful and lovely, and I've never been disappointed. I cannot recommend the St Paul Cheese Shop enough. Enjoy!

Yelp
Every time I go here and ask the delightful people working to put together a cheese board for me, they create something fantastic that my guests devour. That are knowledgeable and friendly, and the selection is amazing. Try their signature chèvre, it's delicious!
google avatar

Haley H.

Yelp
The St Paul cheese shop is my partner and I's favorite place to eat! There's no better place to grab a lunch on-the-go. We have tried sandwiches from other places, but nothing ever comes close to the ole cheese shop!
google avatar

Candy H.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff. They seem like they enjoy their job. I ordered the prosciutto with ricotta & fig jam +greens and it was so good! Wish we had tried this shop sooner during our stay instead of just on our last night in MN.

Yelp
Bad service. Ordered online and went to pickup. They said it would take them a couple of minutes to finish and then they would walk the order outside for me. I waited for 15 minutes outside and when I went back in, the order was just waiting for me and the guy just gave me a blank stare. I don't even care if the food is good, not returning. Update after lunch: changed the rating to 3 stars because the sandwiches were decent but nothing amazing. They are overpriced and not worth it.

Yelp
It took me almost 2 years of living 7 minutes away from the Cheese Shop to get here, and I will consider those the "lost years". My mind is currently racing over where to begin this review. The chèvre? The free samples? Tomato soup shooters? God help us. I could write an 8-paragraph review complete with intro and conclusion PLUS bibliography but I will instead use bullet points and urge you to come here yourself to craft your own opinions. #1. The Signature Chèvre. Woooooo boy. They always have free samples of this, and on wonderful occasion will have it on special. When I win the lottery, I will set aside a million just for this stuff. Try it! #2. Melts + tomato soup shooter. Excellent. I have yet to meet one of their melts that didn't immediately make me want to buy another. My most recent fave is the breakfast sausage and egg. The tomato shooter is a perfect complement to them. #3. Free samples! The staff is SO friendly, fun to talk to, and really know their cheese! Don't hesitate to ask for samples of anything. And don't forget to TRY THE CHÈVRE.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Staff are incredibly knowledgeable about cheese, including history of and what foods each cheese pairs best with. I can tell they really care about cheese...I appreciate that. Chat them up! Huge cheese selection, obviously. They offer melts (grilled, hot sandwiches) and cold sandwiches. Vegetarian options too. A tomato soup "shooter" comes with all melts..a perfect amount of soup in an adorable cup. I've been impressed with both types of sandwiches I've tried; noticeably fresh bread and ingredients used. Somewhat on the pricier side for a sandwich and it's a small space, so I'd recommend taking your food on the go. Samples!!! They always seem to be sampling a specialty spread and are excited to let customers sample various cheeses. Warning: if you try the house-made chèvre sample, you may just walkout with a take-home container!
google avatar

Yelp
Heaven for a charcuterie board lover! Great selection of cheeses, crackers and anything you'd put on your charcuterie board. Their staff is super knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions. The sandwiches here are a hidden gem of Saint Paul if you're looking for a quick, cute lunch spot! There is no seating in shop as it is pretty small, but there are tables right outside. They always have really good goat Gouda, the crispy delicious baguette crackers are a winner, the feta with the dried fruit on it in their refrigerator section is absolutely the best thing I've ever put in my mouth, the feta with dill and cucumbers is also super good! Not to mention they sell "In A Jam" which is amazing (get apricot), as well as the the raincoast crackers!
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
Normally I'd give these guys between a 4 and a 5. They are a bit pricey but their cheeses are excellent. This being different times though, there are certain things a customer expects. One expectation is that since you are handling and cutting foods that generally speaking will not be cooked, put on a mask! Seriously, 3 employees first of all unable to distance from each other and more importantly handling food to slice and wrap. Yes they were wearing gloves, however not changing them between orders AND because their faces were uncovered it really doesn't matter. The gloves do not protect anything from spreading. Also it is a bit weird to me that you have one refrigerator case from which you want customers to self serve, but then you sort of freak out when a customer picks up a pre-wrapped piece of cheese from the cheese case, they want the whole piece of the cheese and the customer is masked. So, please re-think the hygiene practices please.

Yelp
Seriously the best sandwich shop I know of in the Twin Cities. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a new favorite lunch place!
google avatar

Yelp
By no means do I pretend to be a cheesemonger, but I do loves me a good sandwich, and the St. Paul Cheese Shop has those in spades. The shop itself is quite small and pretty easy to miss from the outside since it's sandwiched (sorry) between a Breadsmith, Kybher Pass and a coffee shop. Inside you'll find a couple of coolers filled with various cheeses, shelves adorned with various oils, jams, crackers, etc. and a few menu boards on the wall with the daily specials and various meat and/or cheese-centric sandwiches. You really can't go wrong with any of them, but my favorites thus far have been the spicymonger and the chicken liver pate. Service has always been quick and genuinely nice - definitely worth checking out.

Daniel D.

Yelp
I'm originally from the Mac Grove area and I've since moved to NYC. I was in town today and stopped by this old haunt. Even better than I remembered - the entire staff, so friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered a vegetarian surprise - I knew I was in good hands (the man who made my sandwich is himself a vegetarian). One of the best vegetarian sandwiches I have ever had hands down. Won't find this quality and value anywhere else in the Twin Cities or in Manhattan for that matter.

Ann K.

Yelp
first time visiting this weekend. Great sandwich menu. I had a turkey with brie and crandberry chutney that was terrific -- the turkey had great flavor, the cheese added creaminess, and the chutney was perfect. My husband had a Cubano he loved with came with a "shot" of tomato soup. nice shop -- very crowded. No dine-in option. We had ordered on-line and our sandwiches were available right at our pickup time (so the warm sandwich was perfectly warm)

Scott R.

Yelp
The staff in this shop are among the most welcoming and knowledgeable that I have ever interacted with. They offered suggestions and expertise about a number of cheeses for browsing guests, and those that were waiting on their sandwiches to go were offered cheese samples and small talk. Each guest was greeted as they walked in--personally, it made me feel like a long-standing customer, but it was my first time. If I lived in the Cities, I'd for sure become a regular-- the people are too kind and helpful not to be supported! Oh, and the sandwich was delicious too!

Yelp
Kudos to SPCS for handling COVID-19 with grace, professionalism, and a great attitude. They still have the tremendous cheese selection for which they are known, and are bringing in super new pantry products to support their customers' home cooking experience. It was fun and low-stress to shop there yesterday, and we came home with bags full of amazing cheese, crackers, olive oils, fish sauce, caramels, and some pantry goods that are new to us. Don't forget the Vahlrona brownies! They're practically worth a trip to SPCS all on their own!

Yelp
We need to talk about their Fall special sandwich..ham, blue cheese, apple sauteed in butter, and honey. It was recommended by the guy working and I decided not to overthink it for once at this place. OMG. You know it's good when it's your first time writing on Yelp. The world needs to know about this sandwich. Going through a breakup? It replaces sex. Rewarding yourself for a hard work out? This has all the elements you need to re-fuel and recover. Too lazy to cook? Just head over. Hate blue cheese? Guess what...it can be made with cheddar. For all the winos out there, pair it with a Malbec or lighter bodied Cab. Sit back. Relax. Enjoy. Thank you existing, St. Paul Cheese Shop!
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
Great customer service, great sandwiches. I love the mozzarella melt with a shot of tomato soup. The bacon, brie, caramelized onion, and greens sandwich is bloody amazing. There are also good snacks, like brownies and rice crispie treats that you can buy for dessert. They have a wide selection of cheeses for tasting and buying. There is also a large variety of high-end snacks, like sriracha popcorn puffs, award winning chocolate bars, fancy pasta, couscous, and tomato sauce for pasta. If you are a regular, you can get a sandwich stamp card and get a free sandwich for every ten you buy.

Yelp
Much smaller version on my favorite twin cities cheese store (France 44) situated near MacCalester college on grand avenue. Like the West side location, this shop is staffed with cheery cheese mongers who can advise you on your selections and are more than happy to provide samples while you decide. You can expect to find lots of local (Wisconsin) cheese as well as items from across the globe. Its a great way to get introduced to new items. They also sell a variety of other items, nuts, olives, salami so one could craft a nice picnic from this shop. Parking on the street or in the Dunn Brothers lot next door. Worth a visit.

Yelp
Writing this review, I'm a bit caught between a four and a five but I'll hold off on the five until I can try more. That said, there's a lot of good elements to this little shop/eatery. I went in for lunch. We both had a seasonal special with warm apples, honey, and a cheese (cheddar or blue) on a ciabatta. The balance of bread to stuff was a little skewed with such a sandwich, which bothered my dining partner more than me, but I did find myself thinking I wanted more food, not because I wasn't full, but because I didn't have much substantial besides the bread. All that said, it was really good! The sandwiches come all wrapped up in a really aesthetically pleasing cheese paper-esque wrapping that would make it perfect to leave with or to crack open at their one indoor table or one of the three two-person outdoor tables. We also had their brownies and those were De-Lish! Get one. They were really fudgy with a nice crust all the way around (because they were baked in cupcake tins or something so each brownie was its own whole piece). We sampled their house chevre as well, which was very good. Overall, pricing for the sandwiches was around $10 each, which isn't bad. For something with high quality cheese inside, I didn't find it expensive. Other items seemed comparable to similar cheese shops, which is to say a bit spendy, but that's the price of high quality cheese typically. There was free public parking just beside it so parking was no issue. We also purchased a seasoned feta so once I try that i can update on how some of their products are. Looking around the shop, they had a good selection of cheese, but only two or three of them were from a local region (Wisconsin was the closest I think) versus many were from other countries. Personally, I like stumbling onto huge local selections more, but they seemed to care for their cheese stock. Overall, I thought it was really good. I was happy to have gone, but I'm not sure yet if I would pick it for a lunch again right away unless I was specifically craving a sandwich. I found all elements of the experience really enjoyable from easy parking, friendly staff, and a yummy meal. I wanna go back though to sample more of the store element over the sandwiches.

Yelp
Cute little cheese shop with free parking nearby. This place sells cheese, jams, breads, and spreads. I came to try their sandwiches (made fresh, deli-style) and got the "prosciutto, fig jam, ricotta" sandwich. Although the fog jam was delicious, the ricotta was very cold and partially frozen on some bites. For $11 per sandwich, this was a little disappointing. I'd be back just for the delicious fig jam though!

Veronica Z.

Yelp
I love this place! I went in during the lunch hour today and did not feel hassled whatsoever. 10/10 would recommend and 12/10 would recommend a melt during the winter!
google avatar

Nina E.

Yelp
They have cheese, chèvre, honey and more! I really love that they sell sandwiches too which are amazing because of the cheese that they have. If you like artisan sandwiches then this is good

Carie S.

Yelp
Ordered 16 sandwiches on New Years Eve day for my daughter's bridal party. Every sandwich was correct, the salad was gluten free, as requested & everything was absolutely delicious. I'm from Illinois & when I come to visit I'm always sure to stop in for a sandwich or cheese.

Yelp
Yummy cheesy goodness. Great staff; super friendly and knowledgeable. They know their cheese, can make excellent recommendations for any menu and even tolerate kids who want to taste it all (yes, even the stinky ones...) We are new to St Paul and adore this shop. We are lucky to have found it so quickly and then discovered their sister, The St Paul Meat Shop, just down the street. Both are delightful--and coming from Chicago--these two gems easily rival the best shops there. Add in bread from Rose Street Patisserie and we are happy campers!
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
Still reminiscing about the sandwiches I ate this past weekend... SPCS has everything you would want in a cheese shop. Amazing cheese. Amazing fresh sandwiches with said cheese. Really good specialty items. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. We got two sandwiches in the store and ate them there, and took a bunch of cheese home. A gem!

Yelp
On Sunday I enjoyed my first bicycle ride in ten years. My girlfriend and I rode out for a morning coffee. We decided to walk around while enjoying our beverages and wondered into the St Paul Cheese shop. What a beautiful shop so many wonderful cheeses and cured meats, we looked around a little giddy. Sam took care of us and was knowledgable about all the different varieties and when they came from. We walked away with a wonderful half pound of Kirkham's Lancashire cheese from England, he also recommend we check out the sister Meat shop. What a wonderful little treat for my first ride!

Yelp
First time here after grabbing a Jamba Juice next door. At first entry I adored it right away. 3 stars mainly for customer service & appeal. The lady behind the specialties was especially friendly. As I waited for my friend to join me I looked around the place & skimmed the menu. The worker suggested I try 3 cheeses until then. She explained the texture & taste & we chatted a bit about cheese pairing. My friend joined me & we eventually decided on the turkey, brie & chutney sandwich (+bacon). I don't know-It was just an OK sandwich. Totally not worth $11.50. The bread which is a simple white ciabatta is far too thick & bready to enjoy anything else atop it. I'm left feeling like I should have gone to get lunch where I first planned. Now, I know this place is maybe somewhere I'd come in for good cheese or speciality products like jam, chutney, food gifts etc, but not a sandwich.
google avatar

Tania M.

Yelp
You won't be disappointed! Either you take something to go or have it in the store, you are gonna love it. The shop offers a lot of variety and delicious stuff and if you don't find what you are looking for in the menu... Ask the staff! They will make their best to get what you want! During winter the place only has two tables inside, so if you are lucky you will find a place to have a sandwich there.
google avatar

Cristin K.

Yelp
Staff is rude. You can't make any changes to anything on the menu. I couldn't even get mayo on my sandwich. Way too overpriced! Food was not good! Will not be back!

Yelp
What a neat shop in the Mac area of StP! I stopped by here after a friend told me about the best grilled cheese she had ever had. She was right. The harissa barber's vintage cheddar cheese melt will change your life. It's golden, spicy, rich and cheesy. You might need a nap after (or think about going back to order another one). I've also ordered the prosciutto di Parma, which has a super flavorful egg in it. All melts are served with a tomato soup shooter which is just the right size for dipping. Each time I've returned (three times at the time of writing this after visiting only a month ago) I've browsed the other things around the shop. I'm not much of a chef, but I do occasionally like to make a rich pasta or risotto for myself: they have a cheese for that. Just like to make sandwiches for lunch? They have a cheese for that. They also have other products (pasta, jarred spreads, chocolate) to complement whatever you get. If you're entertaining, the Cheese Shop has spreads (I tried the Pimento and Chevre w/ nuts and dried fruit) which are effing delicious and super easy to set out for guests. Would absolutely recommend this place, whether your grocery shopping or want a hot lunch.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in the twin cities. Fantastic sandwiches, great cheese as well as an incredibly knowledgeable staff. Last time I went I ordered the surprise sandwich, and the employee who took my order and made the sandwich, Jack, was phenomenal. Best sandwich I have ever had. Give that man a raise! I don't normally write reviews online, but this was too good of an experience not to! Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
First off, I LOVE CHEESE! One of my friends raved about the St. Paul Cheese Shop's sandwiches, so I decided to check it out! As soon as you walk in the door, your nostrils are filled with the "mhmmm mhmm" smell of delicious cheeses! The St. Paul Cheese Shop offers a large variety of different cheese's along with handmade sandwiches. The staff is knowledgeable, offers great suggestions and they are friendly. The store is small; however it's the perfect size and very functional! Street parking can be hard to find at times, but one never has to walk very far. I love the cheese shop and all things cheese; however I am not a big fan of their sandwiches. As one Yelper mentioned, the bread they use is often very hard and dry. If you opt for a sandwich with fig jam, I suggest asking for it on the side. The fig jam is too sugary for my liking & overpowers the delicious cheese and other ingredients. After eating my second sandwich from the Cheese Shop; I had absolutely no desire to try any more of their sandwiches. Overall the St. Paul Cheese Shop is a winner (if you take the sandwiches out of the ratio!).

Yelp
"Minnesota friendly with St. Paul style" I was impressed from the get-go. Just reading the menu made my mouth water at lunch time. I ate my well-prepared chorizo and manchego sandwich (I'm from WI, I know a good meat and cheese sandwich when I find one) while sitting at a small table inside and shot the wind with the employees. The manager brought be a free peanut butter cookie to show that the gratitude I felt for these guys was mutual. While sitting in here I noticed tons of people really love this place - if I was a cheese aficionado I'd be in weekly picking at their extensive selection of fine cheeses. I dig the sports fan-like work uniforms here that have numbers on the back and read "Chorizo" where the last name would be on a baseball jersey. Too cute - it suggests that they work as a team. I may just have to purchase one of these shirts myself. I support the St. Paul Cheese Shop Team!
