I should preface by saying that my family regularly orders from, enjoy, and rave about the St. Paul Cheese Shop. We don't mind the higher than average prices bc we appreciate the quality, thought, and excellent sandwich craft that goes into their offerings. Huge fans!
So, you can imagine my anticipation to try the Meat Shop. Short review? Hugely underwhelming. Perhaps I had too high of expectations.
The pastrami seemed to me a litmus test. Besides it was at the top of the menu, practically shouting "pick me!"
Having lived for years in. NYC, I love a good pastrami on rye - it became something of a bad habit while there, and sadly it's hard to find a good one outside the city. Meat Shop is further evidence of that difficulty.
The meat was way over salted, way too dry, and incredibly tough. The rye was fine but also with the light toasting contributed to the sense of dry. I'm used to simple yellow American mustard on pastrami (nothing against spicier deli mustard or Dijon-I love all mustards), and alas the spicy mustard here overwhelmed the good, smoky flavors of the meat. The smoked potato salad (was it a sample? Wow that's the tiniest side I've ever seen!) was good - the smoke really came through, and it had an excellent creaminess, but lacked salt.
We ordered a grilled cheese sammy for our kid and ended up with a toasted ham and cheese. No big deal, especially since the ham was the highlight of the meal. If the other smoked meats are anything like the ham, there might be hope for this place yet. The turkey club was ok, but lacked connection to a traditional club aside from the three slices of bread.
Staff was incredibly friendly. Butcher items looked great. I look forward to trying some sausage.
All in all, not the worst experience, but with the cheese shop team, I expected much better.
