St-Viateur Bagel To Close Its NDG Location This Winter | Eater Montreal

"I also note the company operates a production facility in Laval that makes bagels specifically to supply grocery stores." - Tim Forster

I was attracted by his story quoted from his website— #65+ Years of Bagel Tradition Proud to be the longest running bagel shop in Montreal, St-Viateur Bagel has been baking our famous hand-rolled, wood-fired bagels with the original recipe since 1957. A beloved landmark in the city offering a taste of Montreal’s unique bagel tradition, St-Viateur continues to uphold the same quality and dedication that has made us a favourite among locals, tourists, and celebrities alike.# This branch is not located well frankly so that I nearly missed his entree twice but when you saw it in front of your eyes and you will fell in love with it. A shop with stories and histories. From the side door you could find wood oven baking machines behind the shop. It’s a food factory. I bought each flavor available to try and highly recommend sesame flavor. I love this shop and I found they are proud of what they are doing.

Everything about my experience was 10/10!!! Amazing service, amazing bagel and coffee from Angela and overall great vibe. The coffee was soo good and the bagel was made to perfection. I never knew there was a cafe at this location I always thought it was just a factory for making bagels so I’m really glad I stopped by. Love it here!!! My new go to spot

Google
The best of the best!!!! I’m literally obsessed with the taste of these bagels! They have an in-store menu where you can get different kinds of bagel sandwiches. They have outdoor seating which is really nice. They are reasonably priced given the quality and freshness of the bagels.

Sesame bagel, So good! Freshly baked bagels that are Hand-rolled and toasted in their traditional wood-burning ovens. So fresh and good! Other options available but definitely try the sesame bagels!!

Went here with my sister and dad a few days ago and the employees were so amazing!!! We told them that we came from outside the area to try montreal style bagels and they gave us some bagels for FREE!!! I got a pretty basic bagel and a brookie but they were both amazing!! The staff were super kind and the food was delicious. Would recommend for good bagels and nice people :)

The taste is really good! It is different from the ones produced by ordinary assembly lines. I heard that they have opened a branch in New York. So we came for the good bagel. Took us 1 hour to get there. But things did not end up nicely. My stomach hurts a lot after eating! The hygiene conditions might be bad. First, as shown in the first picture, there are flies flying around on the bagel, and then the staff come and go and no one cares. I was stunned, and they didn't even wave them. Then the second picture is the dine in bagel we ordered called Le steak 🥯. Halfway through eating, I found out why there was something blue on the sesame seeds, which was very disgusting. It didn't look like the color of any food at all. It felt like it was moldy and expired. So we took it back and asked the girl who made the bagel. She said it might be a problem with the bakery next door. Then I looked through the window and the countertops next door were all clean, and there was no problem at all. She said she didn't know then. The cashier next to her said that it was the paint on the bag. You know, I accepted it at the first time. I said okay, because it really looked like it was on the bag. The same color. I asked them to redo it and they looked unhappy. They were also reluctant. The first sentence was not sorry, nor was yes they gonna do it, she said ‘then give back what you are eating now. ‘ Am I crazy? Would I eat the paint with a bag on it even though I knew it was covered with paint? And do you have to be so mean? I realized after 5 minutes that something was wrong. She took it directly from the counter and put it in the oven. Why did it touch the paint on the bag? So I went back to ask her, don’t you think this is strange or odd? Why is it like this? You took it directly from the shelf and put it in the heater. Why do you need a bag? After hearing this, she felt very guilty and said: Oh, it’s because I used the bag to grab the bag. I was a little sad. I said that you shouldn’t do this, because it’s just came out of oven and it is still hot. You should grab it with the inside of the bag. Shouldn’t you put the bag inside out? At least in this way, the pattern paint on the bag will not melt on the food. It was very disgusting. She STILL didn’t say sorry. She just blushed and lowered her head with shame. If she cared at the beginning, it will not cause her any problems. In fact, we spent 50 bucks to buy three large bags. After these two things, I didn’t know whether to return it. I could only take it away silently. I thought, forget it, I don’t want to embarrass others.

Unassuming bagel shop in Laval with excellent bagels, friendly staff and a clean and comfortable atmosphere.

Google
A local resident recommended this place for authentic Montreal bagels, and I couldn’t be happier! We picked up a variety—cheese, blueberry, and sesame—and every single one was incredibly tasty. They were so good that nothing made it back home with us. Our family devoured them all on the drive from Montreal to Toronto. Honestly, we just couldn’t resist!

Yelp
St-Viateur one of the best, if not the best bagel in the Montreal area. We've got one traditional sesame bagel with cream cheese and one with smoked salmon. We also took a dozen of fresh hot bagels. The bagels are made on the spot in a wood oven. The bagels were still hot out of the oven and they're very tasty and full of flavors. Service was quick and professional. There is a small standing area where you can eat your bagel on the go. It would be nice if they have a larger sitting area where you can enjoy your bagels. This location in Laval in the northern suburbs of Montreal is a mostly industrial/commercial area.

Yelp
A birdie recently told me that Montreal bagels are better than New York's (where I am from), so when I visited Montreal during an extended weekend, I gave bagels from St-Viateur a try. Holy crappola... they were unbelievably good! The portions were not thick and ginormous like some of the ones I've had back home. They were the perfect size, not too thick and still soft and chewy inside with a toasted exterior. My entire family wanted sesame bagels with cream cheese, except mine had additional lox and capers. We enjoyed them so much we are planning to return for more tomorrow morning!

Yelp
Following Google Maps to get to this shop I was sure I was being misled as it took me off a main road (which itself was very industrial and not promising looking). I turned into a parking lot thinking I was just going to turn around and find a different bagel shop and there it was. This is basically a factory store where they happen to sell bagels and sandwiches (and some assorted condiments and frozen foods) as a sideline to their gigantic bagel making lines. We actually went on 2 consecutive days and every bite was perfect. I had a 'Plateau' sandwich (ham and Swiss cheese) one day and a smoked meat sandwich the next. Both were truly crave worthy and special. The cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese the partner had both days was also perfect and devoured. Service was good, both days the person working there was great, spoke English beautifully and was very fast. There isn't a dining room (at all) but there are some wooden raised benches with umbrellas just across the small parking lot where you could eat if the weather is nice. They take credit/debit cards and cash and have various soft drinks and side items for your meal if you want them. Truly a wonderful place for authentic Montreal bagels in the suburb of Laval.

Yelp
Would definitely recommend this off the beaten path St-Viateur! We thought Siri took us to the wrong spot at first, but this was tucked away with a nice outdoor seating area. Everyone working there was very friendly and the bagels were excellent as always!

Yelp
We were lucky to hit this bagel shop just before the line started. Rosemary bagel was delicious! Also had a maple apple and really enjoyed them both. Service was great and staff was very nice. Definitely stop in when visiting Montreal. Worth it!

Yelp
it's the krispy kreme of montreal bagels :) the kitchen is open to see the bakery action. opens 24h/day, apparently! the bagels are woodfired and soooo good. smaller and more dense than the non-montreal bagels. lots of cute merch to pick up as well for a little montreal bagel keepsake. everything is reasonably priced.

Yelp
During my visit in Montreal, I has a chance to try their bagels. As a New Yorker, I would say their bagels is as good as New York City's bagel. The Rose Mary bagel with butter is the most delicious bagel that I have ever tried. Thin and crispy crust with a hint of rosemarry married with butter is one of the remarkable food experinces that Montreal can offer you. I will come back to beautiful Montreal for this bagel.

Yelp
Good bagels, really like the smoked salmon bagel on an everything. Great service, nice outdoor space to eat.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to find a St-Viateur Bagel shop in Laval! This place is conveniently located in the middle of the island and in an industrial area. I got half a dozen of different bagels including, sesame, flaxseed, whole wheat, muesli, rosemary, and 9 grains. All were honestly delicious as per usual. My fave still remains the sesame. Price is great for quality bagels. Staff was very kind and friendly. There is no space to sit, it's more of a grab and go. So go grab and go! Absolutely worth it.

Yelp
Best place to get bagels and always fresh! I usually pick up a dozen sesame bagels and freeze half of them and they last me 1-2 months. When I don't want to get a dozen bagels, I like to get the traditional bagel sandwich which has salmon, cream cheese, red onions and capers. Generous amount of salmon and one of the best lox sandwiches.

Yelp
Wow that's why they are so famous because they are simply amazing. We all preserved different bagels. Ours had eggs, ham, cheese, and more. You can get the combo which brings a soda and a salad. Service and prices were great. We even saw how they make through the glass window.

Yelp
What more is there to say? St-Viateur opened up one of its franchise in Laval and it's a nice surprise despite its odd new location. Located well within the industrial area but that's how confident they are that this place will succeed. Price-tag is affordable and the quality of bagels you buy is what we're used to with it's other locations. This place has no eating room, you go in, grab your bagels and pay then you're back in your car within 2 minutes. Laval has never been better.

Yelp
Love that this Montreal legend finally opened doors in Laval !! It is just as fresh, as tasty and as iconic as his highly touristic twin store in Montreal but here we have a parking lot !! Sesame bagel, plain bagel and rosemary sea salt are my favorites so far ! The matzo are super crispy and tasty too ! The owner is a bagel Jedi who knows everything about bagels. My dream come true to have this store in Laval !!

Yelp
Freakin amazing bagels, what more is there to say, they're baked in a wood-fried oven and are absolutely covered in sesame seeds....yum!

Yelp
Took a wonderful trip from Santa Monica, California to see my uncle in Montreal. Friends and family recommended to try these bagels and I must say I was not disappointed at all. I love the Everything Bagel the best but they are all great. Going back home made me feel Canadian again! Peter S.

Yelp
Awesome Montreal bagels. Worth the stop. Bring some home with you. These are slightly sweet tasting. A nice treat slightly warm. You can see the bagel masters making the bagels. Cash only establishment. If you use American currency the exchange is not good.

Yelp
Two bagel companies that own the market and this one is great! Brought home 12 dozen to Toronto for family and friends. Cut them in half and freeze them. Put them in the toaster and they taste just a fresh as the day you got them!!
