Montreal’s Most Iconic Foods | Eater Montreal

"Some New Yorkers may snub our thinner, sweeter, and less-bready version of the bagel, but along with smoked meat and poutine, it’s one of the city’s most celebrated foods. With several locations, St-Viateur is Montreal’s big bagel success story, although roughly half the population swears by its main competitor, Fairmount, a few blocks away." - Valerie Silva

"Pick up a dozen fresh sesame seed bagels to go at the 24-hour landmark St-Viateur shop, or sit down for a smoked salmon sandwich or bagel spread at one of their cafes on Mont-Royal or in Dollard-des-Ormeaux." - Heather Vandenengel

Every Notable 24 Hour Restaurant in Montreal, Mapped - Eater Montreal

"A block north of its counterpart (or some would say its competition), St-Viateur bagel offers a similar no-frills bagel experience to Fairmount. The difference between the two is subtle, and a point of contention for many Montrealers, but in any case, St-Viateur makes an equally quick, similarly affordable pit stop for hand-rolled bagels in many flavours. A tip: These bagels are best ordered warm, and plain sesame have more often come straight out of the oven, while the fancier counterparts tend to be made just once a day." - Audrey Carleton

The original St Viateur Bagel and a staple food in Montreal. I have been here several times and I never got tired of watching them make the fresh bagels, pulling them out of the wood fired oven, and eating them hot. Their “everything bagel” 🥯, plain bagels, cinnamon raisin bagels and actually all their bagels are to die for. They have other products you can pair your hot fresh bagels with, such as smoked salmon, cream cheese, fruity cream cheese and others I cannot recommend this place enough for your bagel cravings. Seriously, eat here.

The first time, I did not know that they only take cash. I try to find cash in my wallet and it did not enough. The cashier let me owe her 50 cent. Then I found out they have a atm. I took some cash and back to give her. Honestly, you should buy it fresh. Lots of people experienced the bagels frozen is hard to eat. I bought some fresh ones and love so much the blueberry. My favourite place after my job.

There’s a lot of bagel places in Montreal but definitely this is the best one. I choose to go there everytime for the best smell and freshest bagels. I enjoy watching the process preparing the different types of bagel however my all time favorite is the sesame. I recommend trying it with a Philadelphia cream cheese 😊

Stopped by on a food tour and got an everything bagel, holy hell it was amazing. Fresh out of their wood fired oven. I've eaten more than my fair share of bagels over the years, including in NYC, and these ruined all other bagels straight up. From here on out, whenever I have another bagel I'll feel a bit sad it's not one of these. I'm staying an hour outside of Montreal and actually considering going into town just to buy a dozen to bring back with me. Maybe if I keep two they'll breed and make baby bagels for me to feast on... Okay, that's dark. Seriously, eat here.

Amazing bagels, especially fresh out of the oven! This is only a bakery, but you can purchase fixings, i.e cream cheese and smoked salmon to make your own sandwiches at home. They do have a cafe location near Mont Royal where they will make sandwiches. It’s unfortunate they choose not to tell us this when we visited. Ladies at the cashier were not kind and annoyed with our questions.

Fantastic bagels! Ive really enjoyed St. Viateur. Everything bagel is perfection. It can get busy so o prefer to drop by early in the mornings when I’m in MTL.

I don't get the hype of these bagels, they taste pretty mediocre, maybe Montreal bagels aren't my thing. Staff was friendly and they gave me one right out of the oven so it was warm and fresh!

Everyone knows this is a staple when you come to Montreal. Great bagels and great value .. I do wish bagels weren’t crazy hard sometimes .. but if warmed up again they are great and when fresh is always great. This is a place where you can actually enjoy the bagel without any spread if you wanted .. it’s that good. Their everything bagel is my fav and of course you can buy spreads.. cash only tho. Not a dime in location and there’s another one two blocks away down the road. If you want to sit down you can always visit their CAFE location
