If you are in Melbourne, and a meat lover , it’s given you will be at Stalactites few times, whether you are in school, Uni or Corporate doesn’t matter. It’s that tradition associated with the place. Rightly so, amazing food overall, souvlaki s are obviously the must try, but I tried Mousaka this time and was pleasantly surprised to find the similarities to authentic one I tried in Greece itself. Loved every food over and over again and must recommend to be patient if the queue is huge (which is kinda given) Parking is normal City parking and always troublesome and pricey. Ambience is good, and the design with the theme of stalactites is unique.

We were visiting Melbourne and decided to try some authentic Greek food. The food was absolutely delicious. Paris was fantastic and made good recommendations. The pita bread & dips, lamb lemanato, grilled snapper and baklava was amazing🤩

Place is busy at all hours of the day. Besides the thematic decor that goes with the name, the food is very good. The mixed platter meat was succulent and tasty!! To top that, we were served by Mehak. Her service was top class. With good menu recommendations and food size portions for 4 of us, we finished every morsel of food. Nothing was wasted. Thani you for the lovely experience!

What a busy place! Long line up! Place is busy at all hours of the day. Besides the thematic decor that goes with the name, the food is very good. The mixed platter meat was succulent and tasty!! I really like this an insane architecture very unique 💫 I think portions are smaller than expected!

What a busy place! Long line up! We ended up ordering Take aways instead. We ordered Lamb Giros Meals. Premium grade lamb shoulder with Salad and seasoned chips. Delicious! Big portion too!

Amazing Food and Lovely staff. Food was very quick to come out. Not pushy on moving you on. And even have some left for lunch tomorrow 😋

There was a long queue at 6pm but staffs are very efficient. I must say Greece cuisine is very much influenced by Middle East cuisine. It was a delicious souvlakis and gyros after all . Special mention to the chicken skewer, very tender and juicy.

We went to this restaurant at 12 midnight right after a concert and we were famished. We got seated pretty quickly! I can tell you this restaurant did not disappoint. The mixed platter for 2 was good for 4 people! Although we were pretty stuffed, we couldn’t stop eating. Totally exceeded our expectations!

Yelp
This was my first meal at Australia and I absolutely loved it! The hubby and I stood in line for around 15 mins on an afternoon and once we were seated we were super excited to dig in. The service here is fast and I loved the ambiance here where there was stalacites coming from the top. Really cool experience. For food we ordered the: *Mixed gyro plate - this came with chicken and lamb gyro, and the meat was super juicy and succulent. This plate also came with fries, a roasted tomato and salad which was great. *Pita - the pita here is out of the world, so soft and perfectly chewy, went so well with the gyro! * Dips plate - this came with 4 different dips which included hummus and a yogurt dip... this was DELICIOUS! Highly recommend trying this out Overall, the food was great with really large portions and absolutely delicious food!

Yelp
We are looking for Asian food in Melbourne's china town but we were overwhelmed by the choices. We stumbled upon Stalactites and it was packed with a waiting line. So, we gave up on Asian food and went Greek! Great choice. Hummus was creamy and nicely seasoned with lemon. Pita was good albeit a bit greasy for me. Lemon lamb with potatoes...tender, fall apart lamb. Yum. Ambiance is like crowded NY deli. You sit close to other tables but a good vibe. Fellow next to us gave us a recommendation for Asian restaurant so a win win for us!

Yelp
First visit to Melbourne and upon arrival our Uber driver suggested this place. Immediately unloaded luggage and went straight away. GREAT suggestion because our party of 5 were all very impressed. So glad we went early because a line started quickly after we arrived (line moved fast). Slow start on service but once we ordered the service was prompt. Started with a Platter for two of the Vegetarian appetizers, very good. The pita bread is authentic & perfect, we ordered extra. The Lamb Souvalki....so delicious, grilled perfectly. Garden salad was fresh and delicious and so was the hummus, tzatziki and eggplant dip, yummy! This place was amazing everyone worked so hard to fill and clear tables for more customers. Highly recommend a visit, please be patient because the place looks to be always busy.

Yelp
Thought this place was wonderful! Iconic Greek restaurant with extensive menu. Staff is friendly and there to help guide you with your selections. We ordered the lamb and chicken wraps with "chips" Aka French fries. Unique sauce and quality meats!

Adrianna P.

Yelp
Ordered some Souvaki for take-away. I got the lamb and chicken combo, with feta, French fries, tomato, lettuce, onion and tzatziki sauce. Super tasty. It was flavorful, juicy, and very filling. They put a nice amount of chicken and lamb. Would love to go back, cute vibes and ambiance and the place was packed on a Monday night so you know it's good. They have a nice range of appetizers, mains, seafood, and platter to share. Would love to dine in and try some other dishes. Quick service and great food!

Tara T.

Yelp
Based on reviews, we decided to have dinner here today. We ordered Saganaki, Lamb cutlets, small plate chicken Giro, and lamb souvlaki, Mixed meat souvalki with a side of pita bread. The meat was good, hearty and rich. Unfotunately, all dishes lacked any flavor. We asked for spicy sauce and it was a different flavor for sure that didn't quite go with the food. The sauze was basically yougurt with no flavors. The place was full and there was a long time to get in. Not sure why but I know that we won't recommend it. Servers were nice but forgetful.

Jessica H.

Yelp
This place is a Melbourne institution. It's been around forever and almost everyone who has lived in Melbourne for any length of time has eaten here. It's a friendly place, always buzzing at night, usually with a peculiar mix of inebriated and sober people. This is one of the few places to come for quality food at 3am. Most people stand in line for the take-out souvlaki, but I like to actually do the sit-down thing because it's always hilarious for people-watching that time of night. And the food and service is still good! As a vegan, I always get either the vegan souvlaki (clearly labelled on the menu) or I get the vegetarian platter and just tell them I'm vegan and can't have dairy/egg and they customise it. The pita bread is always fresh, even at 3am, and the dips are flavourful. I also love the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. It's so completely ridiculously cheesy, but drunk-Jessica/tipsy-Jessica really gets a kick out of pretending she's in an extremely well-lit cave that just so happens to serve Greek food, ha. Long story short...I wouldn't rush out here and go out of my way to try this place during the daytime per se, but when very little other quality eateries are open late at night, this place is amazing.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
The ambiance and accommodation for our party of six made it worth the trip. The servers were attentive, kind but forgetful, but so friendly we didn't mind a few small snafus. The food was decent.

Rob B.

Yelp
Aloha, in the Greek district of Melbourne, probably the last of the Greek Restaurants, it was very good. Clean restrooms, good food & quick service. I had a great Greek beer that was nice & malty. All in all a great Greek experience. Thanks for being in Greek town! And being open 24/7 who does that anymore?

Geoff B.

Yelp
A delicious smorgasbord of meats. We did take away and the restaurant really caters to both eating in or take away. This is a Melbourne go to.

Ilias M.

Yelp
Coming to Melbourne for a short stayed wanted to trying the Hellenic Food culture. Food if good wouldn't say great and probably first time finding not one Greek working. The atmosphere and service was great its definitely a popular venue with volume of customer you could say an institution of Melbourne greek food

David F.

Yelp
Really excellent meal and great value for money in part because they have a BYO policy and only charge $5 corkage. A steal at that price. The younger members of the party were dispatched to a nearby bottle shop for supplies after they ordered. We had pitta bread and dips to start with the hummus particularly noteworthy. Of the party of four I'm pretty sure I got by far the best deal - a sublime mixed grill with all the food groups: lamb, chicken, pork, beef. Really great and just the right amount of food. Not so sure about my companions' choices who all opted for souvlaki with pitta bread. I hasten to add these were also delicious but not large enough to constitute a main course. Service was efficient and friendly. Highly recommended.

Lauren J.

Yelp
I love love love this place! Lamb is cooked on a spit the traditional Greek way by the old school Greek men haha there is a huge menu to choose from with pricing ranging from $10-40. There's a childrens menu too with smaller meal sizes - which I tend to go for as the meals are massive and very filling! Open 24/7 which is awesome when you're craving a souvlaki any time of the day or night! Service is good, there's a hostess to take you to your seat or if you feel like take away Go For It! Highly recommend.

Dean W.

Yelp
This place is open 24 hours and usually in my experience these kinds of places serve mediocre food. Anyway, a friend took me here, he went for the chicken and me the lamb. Don't go for the lamb, it's nearly processed crap to be blunt. If your a bit wasted you could princely stomach it. Wasn't impressed.

Chantelle T.

Yelp
I like to consider Stalactites to be an almost-insitution: a must go in the early hours of the morning after trying out Melbourne's finest pubs and clubs. Open 24 hours, Stalactites has a busy and dynamic atmosphere and at peak times you'll see a line going out the door. Usually I'm not much for waiting, but this is totally worth it. I only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table at 7pm on a Saturday, which in my view was a win. Staff were super friendly and helpful and given the business of the place, surprisingly attentive despite the craziness. One thing I do not like is the layout at the entry which splits into a sit- in queue, take-out queue, and in the midst staff walking through to collect meals to take to the dining room. With two friends we had ordered the vegetarian share plate for two, a mixed, chicken and vegetarian souvlaki and large fries. No complaints about the food at all, the dips were flavourful, the pita bread was fresh and warm, and the souvlaki was well dressed and flavourful. I felt the cost was reasonable for what you get and have no qualms recommending this place to others.

Sheenal S.

Yelp
The worst meal I've had in a long long time. My friends and I got a lamb souvlaki each, this fried cheese dish and a bowl of chips. As it was freezing cold, I also got a coffee. The waiter kept trying to get us to buy dips with bread and was super pushy. Service was awful. We had to wait 20 minutes to get their attention to order and half an hour to get our bill. The fried cheese was nice but I think you would feel sick if you didn't share it. The lamb souvlaki lacked flavour, salt, and basically just taste. The lamb at times was rough and tasted raw. Ugh. The coffee tasted foul. None of us finished our meals and left in disgust.

Yelp
Food: This place is a paleo's dream. There is so much delicious meat and fresh salad on the menu! We ordered the meat platter for two. What I loved was how every meat had it's own texture and flavour, no two were alike. We orders chips alongside it - which was a bad move, the chips are a bit of a let down compared to their gorgeous meat, and they were also far too heavy, we should have opted for a salad instead. Atmosphere/Service: Stalactites is one of those places that just attracts everyone, from students look for a cheap eat after uni, to groups of friends lining their stomach before a night out, to older couples and families, clearly winding down after a day's shopping and enjoying the authentic Greek food on offer, or foodies like us, looking to sample all the meat they can offer! Service is fab, fast and friendly. The waiting staff are a credit to the restaurant. Even better, this place is open 24 hours. Would I recommend it: 100% yes (unless you're a vegetarian). Delicious, no frills, tasty greek food, any time of the day or night. Right in the heart of the CBD, it offers everything from a quick snack, to a filling meal. Particularly if you are just visiting Melbourne, this is the perfect place to get reliable, affordable food no matter the time of day.

Kate S.

Yelp
Hands down the best giros I've ever had! We were seated quickly as it was mid-afternoon. We ordered pita and tzaziki for an app. My husband ordered the bifteki souvlaki, and I ordered the mixed girls souvlaki. Both were absolutely amazing! The meats were cooked perfectly. The marinated lamb was delicious and the chicken was very moist. My husbands bifteki was delicious and fresh as well. The ceiling of the restaurant was pretty cool. The food itself was excellent and appeared very authentic. Would definitely visit again if I ever come back to Melbourne!

Vincent Y.

Yelp
I find it from yelp while I come back from the China town. It is near it. And the test is good , I love it.

Darya S.

Yelp
Came here for a late-night dinner after a comedy show. Got the mixed meat souvlaki and split it with a friend, along with green tea. The meat had lots of fatty parts to it and there was also way too much sauce. So it wasn't the best Greek food ever. But it was decent. The ceiling is super cool here, and I like that they're open so late! I wish I'd gotten a salad, because they looked awesome.

Jordan M.

Yelp
Legendary. The first time I came I didn't get the hype. But the next time I came to Melbourne i found myself craving the overflowing plates of meat, greasy pitas and savoury dips. Now I can't come to town without visiting. Come, devour and enjoy - it's an institution.

Stacy B.

Yelp
After a fair few drinks on Friday we hopped in a cab to go home. The taxi driver made the mistake of driving past Stalactites. Since I had only had a 'liquid-dinner' I was lured to the place like a moth to a flame. As per last visit the service was quick and attentive. And the food... well.. I got the mixed souvlaki (probably with extra garlic sauce I just can not resist) and it was amazing. Melt in my mouth, garlicy saucy deliciousness. Messy. Totally worth it :D

Wayne L.

Yelp
Open 24 hours a day and in the middle of the CBD. Excellent food and good atmosphere. Good for dinner or breakfast, Grabbing a bite or out on a date. highly recommended

Yelp
A while back when my Geologist friend was lecturing me on the formation of rock features in caves, and I started dribbling like a Pavlovian dog, I realised I had a latent obsession - Stalactites. And this had absolutely nothing to do with Limestone. Stalactites is one of the sole reasons why I bother heading into town for a drink, rather than just, say for example, heading to my local pub. Cos we all know the main reason we drink alcohol (responsibly of course) is so we have an excuse the get a late night Kebab/Souvlaki. And Stalactites make some of the best Souvlaki's in town. Sure the meat can be of variable quality, sometimes being juicy and succulent and other times burnt and chewy. But it always tastes pretty good to me. The reason? The tzatziki (garlic yogurt sauce). Stalactites tzatziki has enough garlic to make Dracula turn in his grave half way across the world in Transylvania. The only thing I really don't get about this place is the many many people who appear to dine in their restaurant section clearly on a romantic date (remember the tzatziki). Now I may not be the next Casa Nova, but Stalactites seems like a strange option for a date to me. Maybe I'll just have to take someone there myself to see what all the fuss is about. I am that obsessed it appears.

Andrew W.

Yelp
Got in quickly on a Friday night despite there being a line. Had the mixed giro. Came with some salad and chips. Also had a pita with some eggplant dip. Was good, not great. Lamb and chicken were both overcooked. Pita was really good. Portion was enormous (enough for 2 people easily).

Frank W.

Yelp
Weird decor - but, then again, I'm an American, eating Greek food in Australia - so what do I know. The Gyro was one of the best I've ever eaten. Superb. I'd go again.

Teresa H.

Yelp
BOOKING AND PRE-ORDER RECOMMENDED FOR GROUP OF 10+ (especially on Fridays) Friday team lunch we had about 15-20 people which we pre-booked, however we did not pre-order, which was a big mistake. It took over an hour to get our food ...yes very hungry. A few of us had to get take away as we need to run back for meetings etc. So make sure you set up lunch for 1.5 - 2hrs. The food was good, I had the Lamb Giros Souvlaki with chilli sauce plus chips on the side. Service was average. Although I would like to say that the supervisor (Chris) handled the situation of us complaining about the food very well. We got free chips and he re-printed out receipt to make sure it was easier for individuals to identify how much was their meals are (we all know how hard it is to split bills when there is more than 10 people). It's probably not a place I would go again for lunch or dinner, BUT a great place for when you have had a few to LOT of drinks! ...supper time! Sorry didn't take any photos as I was super hungry from the wait!

Peter S.

Yelp
Amazing food, service and ambiance! We came from the US looking for authentic Greek food and this was it. They're open 24/7...u won't be disappointed...

Linh D.

Yelp
I don't know why I don't eat here more, given how much I like Greek food and how this places delivers it up pretty consistently. It probably had something to do with the lines! I recently shared a vegetarian platter with a friend: the dips are top notch and you can taste every individual ingredient. For my main, I had the lemonata. The lamb was soft and tender, full of flavour and those lemon potatoes tasted as if lemons had been infused inside them.

Evan K.

Yelp
Stalactites is the bringer of good Greek food in Melbourne's own defined 'Greek Precinct'. I've eaten a few times here with family (Greeks dont tend to be risky when it comes to eating out) and whether it's just family wanting to be able to order in Greek or not, the food is great but it doesn't really pack that 'special' that you might be looking for. I hear people rave about the food here and the venue is crowded with locals but maybe it's just because nothing can beat my ma's cooking that i don't think so highly of the meals. I've sampled a few things here and I now have the one-and-only, eggplant lasagne. As a vegetarian (so rare for a Greek i've been told) this is what tastes great and fits into my eating habits. Everything else on the menu is quite 'meat' orientated so Vege's, your options are limited. The venue is a tad squashy at times and if you're seated near the bathroom / stairs be prepared to hold your breath.

Miriam S.

Yelp
Ok, so I understand that Stalactites is one of the most famous Greek restaurants in the CBD. Greeks swear by it, drunken teens swear by it, and foodies swear by it too. Plus the never-ending queue out the door seems to confirm that they must be doing something right. Unfortunately my experience there says otherwise. The souvlaki was rather average due to chewy meat and crumbling bread, which made it really hard to eat. The crumbed kalamari seemed to have no seasoning whatsoever, and the baklava was dry. Maybe I just visited on one of their off days, who knows. I will say this, the place was certainly buzzing and the atmosphere was rather nice. The brick walls walk a fine line between restaurant and someone's cosy home. But if that doesn't tickle your fancy, you can always just grab some takeaway.

Arne K.

Yelp
I am pretty disappointed. The food tasted okayish but nothing at all like typical Greek food. I have only been to Greece 2 times but even in the dirtiest looking place the food taster way better than the food at this restaurant. Sorry, no recommendation here. However, the restaurant is nice, staff is friendly and the ouzo tastes good.

Jeff D.

Yelp
started with a good eggplant dip, my wife had the chicken skewers, I had the mixed grill which included a chicken skewer. The chicken was beautifully tender but overspiced. The lamb was very salty and chewy. Expected better quality for the price. Service was fabullous!

Ambrose C.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by a very charismatic and successful man who used to live in this city. He also said to me that the food in Melbourne is so much better than the food in Boston, and I think this place is one of the reasons. I also realised that Australian lamb, when cooked sufficiently, is excellent. I walked in very hungry and I had a Lamb Giros souvlaki, and I thought it was one of the best lunches I had in Melbourne so far. The tenderness of the lamb with the slight spice in the flavour, the warm pita bread, the nice creaminess and the flavour of the tzatziki made this an excellent pita sandwich. The dish is about $12.50, and after eating this dish, I was really full for the entire day and had plenty of energy to go walking around Melbourne. I was so glad I didn't order chips with this dish. The dish was so delicious that I vividly remembered the tenderness and flavour of the lamb. I also realised that this place is open 24 hours, so it might be an excellent choice after an amazing, adventurous, delightful, and exhilarating night in the city, especially with your cool friends and your gorgeous companions, and all of you get really hungry in the process. I have never been to a Greek restaurant that actually does this, or even seen a Greek place that does this in the States. The service here around lunch time at 11:30 was a little slow but efficient. The location is excellent, it's right in Central Melbourne. Overall, although I believe I did not have the best Greek food in Melbourne, I definitely had one of the tastiest pita sandwiches in a very long time. To reinforce this, I went to my local Greek restaurant after I came home, which was supposed to be one of the best in the somewhat decent city of Boston, and I ate a Gyro sandwich.... The flavour and the deliciousness of that Gyro sandwich still fell a little short compared to the Lamb Giros souvlaki I had here. All other pita sandwiches (with lamb) I ate in other places in the somewhat decent state of Massachusetts almost tasted bland and lacked flavour. They got my stomach full, but not really full. So if you are a first time visitor to Melbourne, this place is worthwhile to get some tasty Lamb souvlaki.

David S.

Yelp
I am a fan of Stalactites. One articular reason for this is that I don't think I have ever seen it closed. Whether it has a 24 hour license or whether they just have more stamina than myself, the result is impressive. The quality of their food does not seem to degenerate as the sobriety of their clientele certainly does. On each occasion I've eaten here the service has been lightning fast with souvlakis being served up only minutes after they were ordered. They are fully licensed which makes it a great place for an after party or a pit stop before you take your night further. Possibly not up there for the best souvlaki in Melbourne but pretty close....

Emilie C.

Yelp
For my first restaurant in the Greek precinct, we went to Stalactites, a typical Greek restaurant with a laid back atmosphere and comfort food in nice quantities. The place was full the whole time we were there (on a Saturday night), and service was quite good, waiters being efficient despite the high number of clients. So why 3 stars? Well the food wasn't that amazing. We started with an eggplant dip with pitta bread, then a vegetarian souvlaki for me and a lamb dish of the day for my friend. The souvlaki was mostly filled with salad, which is always disappointing, and the lamb dish and eggplant dip and lamb dish won't last in our memory.

Arabella G.

Yelp
A couple of weekends ago, after an evening spent at a swish corporate ball replete with three-course dinner of refined dish after refined dish and copious amounts of wine, my friends and I ended up at Stalactites. In a cab. Well past midnight. And we weren't even all that hungry. Stalactites' souvlaki is THAT good. A veritable Greek Melbourne institution, Stalactites' menu offers far more than just its rightly famous souvlaki but this is invariably what I - and Stalactites many other patrons - opt for. Its chicken and lamb souvlakis are particularly good, consisting of warm pitta bread absolutely stuffed with spit roasted meat - quiet there in the smutty seats - lettuce, tomato, onion and just about the best homemade tzatziki in existence. I have it on good authority. Although Stalactites is a pretty popular restaurant for dining in but I tend to stop by for takeaways en route home after a night out in Melbourne's CBD. A word of warning though for fly by night souvlaki eaters: you cannot order ahead by phone to pick up Stalactites in your cab, necessitating no small addition to your taxi bill. But with souvlaki this good, who the hell cares?

Mark J.

Yelp
Stalactites. Stalactites is the place you go when it's four o'clock in the morning and you want some fried cheese. You walk over pools of vomit to get there, queue up behind shady characters before you can get a table. One of your friends orders a kebab, you order some saganaki, and you wait. And you wait. And then it comes, and it's edible but you realise it's not worth the wait or the price and you're just here because you don't have anywhere better to be, and you either get a cab home, or you head out for some karaoke.

Hope M.

Yelp
Would you like dust with your souvlaki? Seriously, the faux-cave ceiling in Stalactites must be a health hazard, but if it's 3am and you are in desperate need of grease, it doesn't really matter. My pick at Stalactites is actually the moussaka rather than the souva - it's like the greek version of lasagna with layers of eggplant and meat. It's hugely filling and warming, and will fix what ails you. Enjoy it with a beer and soak up the ambience of this 24 hour eatery - fun times.

Ralph K.

Yelp
Open 24-7 - very busy at lunchtime. Tasty and fun place with huge portions and a rocky ceiling. Fish soup, hummus, pita, and souvlaki, esp w the spicy feta sauce, were great! The baklava was soggy. Womp-womp.

Frank L.

Yelp
Used to go there every Thursday for lunch and I was never disappointed. Always got the lamb suvi, the lamb was crispy on the outside and nice and tender on the inside. Personally I could not fault this place.

Grayson M.

Yelp
Delicious meals and a great environment. Stayed just across the street so was nice to always have somewhere open for a quick nibble. Be warned, the meals are huge! I ended up ordering pretty much every meal as an entree so I could still fit on the plane to head home.

Sasha L.

Yelp
This place is always packed during dinner and up till late on Fri and Sat nights. Been here twice, never disappointed. Love the Lamb Giros Souvlaki - chunky pieces of tender lamb (mmmm... Writing this is making me hungry again), generous portion - too generous, in fact. I couldn't finish my souvlaki, even though I barely ate the whole day. Might order the kids size next time. Highly recommend this place, especially if you are looking for a good place to eat on a weekend that won't blow a hole in your pocket, or if you want good takeaway wraps in the city ( because they do takeaways too!) Drink options so-so.. And they have a special dinner menu from their Greek chef too (I think only on Fridays, not too sure)

Marisa A.

Yelp
Not many places you can go to 24/7 & 7 days week but this is one of them. The Greek Custard ~ not greek so dont know how to say it but love it anyway. For the Man ~ any of the meat dishes, they are all good.. If u are hungry any time of the day or night.. This is the place to go!! The Renovations ~ Fantastic!

Mathan M.

Yelp
Dear You, Please take a seat whilst I tell you a wonderful story. A story that happened within the early hours of the morning in the city. This story began when a young lad named Mathan first encountered night shifts at his current work. It required him to be awake during inhumane hours of the night and sleep during the warmth and brightness of day. It was a difficult task. He didn't quite know how he could cope with two weeks of being nocturnal so he thought, and thought, and thought. Unfortunately by the time he was finished thinking it was only 11pm in the evening. This frustrated him as he is required to remain awake until the sun rose and he wasn't doing a well enough job at that current time. The answer to his dilemma took shape in a very curious way. He decided instead of going through this alone he should take two of his closest friends, Dan and Mel who were not nocturnal either, and wonder in the city until sun rose. Mathan thought this was a brilliant idea. So three days before Mathan began his night shifts, Dan and Mel accompanied Mathan in the city. It was a brutal first evening as by 2am in the morning they were all tired, not to mention hungry. So they decided to find food. They scoured and scoured La Trobe street for a place to eat to no avail. The three were nearly about to give up when Dan stopped the others and said to them, "I know. Let's go to Stalactites!". To which they all agreed. They all arrived at Stalactites with no clue as to what they wanted to eat. They walked into the gorgeous building which hosted decorations that signified being inside a cave. Stalactites were hanging from the roof and the atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. They spoke to a waiter asking whether they could find seats. They nodded and directed them to a nice spot by the window with a view of the city streets, which they all considered divine. By now, the three have started to really feel the hunger. They decide to pull up the menus and check out the food available to order. There were meals which ranged from a decent price from $10 onwards. They pondered for a little while. And a little while longer. The urge to sleep is now at full swing which promoted everyone to order what they thought was good. All of them ordered Souvlaki. The food which these three ate that night was splendid. They considered every bite flavourful and the portions were more than enough. The time it took for the food to arrive wasn't bad either as they had ample amount of time to chat about how tired they all were before the food arrived. The three amigos left Stalactites satisfied that night. They left with a massive grin on their faces knowing that they have found the place to indulge good food within the inhumane hours of 3am as they are 24 hours. This was fantastic as this would not be the one and only time these three would find themselves in the confines of the CBD during those hours--this continued for three nights in a row. Dan, Mel and Mathan will never forget Stalactites. Within the multiple time spans of their visit to this restaurant it has become their favourite place to eat within the early hours of the morning. They highly anticipate their return, and when they do they know that Stalactites will never disappoint.

Yelp
Stalactites... Honestly a poor example of Greek food. Yes the portions are exaggerated, I ordered the Beef Kokkinisto and it was my fault for forgetting to request an entrée size instead of the main size but the waiter didn't even ask me. This thing was 500g of meat in soup with green beans... Luke warm, slightly chewy and with Greek food presentation that doesn't matter. I normally complain that portions are too small in Melbourne but this was too large and honestly, the though of having it as leftovers wasn't a good one. With out being too harsh, it reminds me of portions and quality you find at Sophia's... Only Greek. The souvlaki doesn't stand out to others and at $12.50 it's not cheap either. So if your visiting Melbourne and want to discover the food it truly has to offer make this one a miss and move on.

Yelp
Oh good lord, the portions are huge! Food is served so quickly! That's how we were able to be seated so quickly without much of a wait on a Friday night. - Greek salad - gigantic, plenty of cucumbers, tomatoes, olives and feta. - Calamari - could be crispier. - Lamb Souvlaki $12.50 - with lettuce, tomato, onion and tsatziki. It easily can be shared. Eat it efficiently, as the pita will get soggy if you wait too long while you are chatting with friends. It is delicious with the fresh veg inside (tomato could be sliced a bit thinner). It would be even better if the pita was toasted instead of just warmed. - Chicken Souvlaki $12.50 - had some fatty pieces of meat, yuck when you bite into tendon. - Tzatziki - perfect

Yelp
Have always loved Stalactites and hope it stays that way. There's nothing I love more after a night out, p*ssed or not, than grabbing a souvlaki or whatever - and this place is consistently good. It can get quite busy but it's worth the wait. They also do a brilliant saganaki. With Comedy Festival coming up they're going to be seeing a lot more of me again, I just can't help it. If I limit it to three times a week instead if every day I should be fine.

Yelp
The quality "souva" has dropped significantly over the years, once upon a time it was the place to get good quality souvlakis. Meat quality was not good and came out cold. The place is trying to be both a restraunt and take away, yet not up to either standards. If your dining in expect to wait a long time to have your food served. Expect mix ups with your orders. It's loud and roudy inside. The toilets on Saturday night is trashy like a nightspot. If your getting take away and you live outside the city, kebab vans on the way are cheaper and on par or better quality with less wait times.
