Southern Cooking Icon Nathalie Dupree Dies at 85 | Eater Atlanta

"Opened in the back of an antique store in Covington, Georgia — a spot frequented by Atlantans — this namesake restaurant grew out of the chef’s early European training and her focus on Southern ingredients. Drawing on her time working in a kitchen in Spain and her Le Cordon Bleu certification in London, she became known for applying French cooking techniques to Southern comfort foods. Chef Suvir Saran captured the emotional impact of her cooking, writing, "[her restaurant] food wasn’t just food; it was heart and soul on a plate." Her practical lessons and distinctive approach to technique also lived on in simple rules like the "pork chop theory" — "one chop in a pan dries out, but two or more cook in their collective fat, staying juicy and tender." - Henna Bakshi

We stopped in here while traveling as qe were looking for a family style restaurant after getting tired of eating fast food. When we walked in, it is obvious they have a mold issue because the whole place smelled like a hay barn. My son mentioned it smelled like a chicken coop. Outside of that, everything looked clean, but dated. Im sure the carpet is older than both my teens combined and is probably contributing to the musty smell. We got there right before the dinner crowd came in. This place appears to appeal to the older seniors, at least while we were there. Even though there were probably 8 customers, it took forever for us to be seated and then to be waited on. Our assigned waitress disappeared and another one helped us out (she was attentive at least). When our assigned waitress came back, she was not the least bit friendly. We only saw her when she took our order, brought our food, and gave me our check, which I had to hunt her down. Food-wise, everything was ok. The chicken tenders and buffalo chicken tenders were a hit with my kids and the sides were good. I had the chopped steak. In Texas, a chopped steak is usually flame broiled/grilled. Here, it was an oven broiled patty, so that took a star off. Now, it was favorable, tender and moist, but the patty was swimming in grease. Im sure they throw them in a pan with hot water to keep them hot. Honestly, I should have gotten the meatloaf as this is what it tastes like, minus the tomato sauce. The cucumber salad was really delicious and so were the fries and fried okra, but the mashed potatoes were not all that great. Also, proportions were really small. As I was checking out, a customer was complaining about his to-go order and how his wife was ipset at the extremely small sides proportions. They pretty much told him to call tomorrow and talk to the manager. After he left, one waitress turned to the other and said, "If she was complaining about the size of the sides, she probably shouldn't be eating them because she is a glutton." Wow!

Service couldn’t have been better! Food was fantastic for even 2 picky kids. Steaks were good. Daughter loved the honey mustard. Placecould definitely use some remodeling, but don’t let the look steer you away. We did not get it, but wish we did. The seafood looked amazing a couple next to us at the captains platter with fried fish and shrimp

Google
We both had a wonderful lunch. I had the Turk sandwich, and my Woman had the grilled whitefish. Service was quick, the food excellent, and - wait for it - the check was very reasonable. In today's world of delivering less and charging more, this was awesome!

Google
This place has gone way downhill. The restaurant smells bad of musty damp carpet and mold. I’m pretty sure Jim Stalvey can afford to remove that nasty carpet and make the entrance handicap accessible. The entrance and seating are not wheelchair friendly! The service was absolutely horrible. Our waitress took our order, brought our drinks (no refills during dinner) and that was the last we saw of her until we were ready to leave; that’s when we got a refill to-go. I believe if you’re going to charge $3 for a glass of tea you should get more than one cup. I can get a gallon at Ingles for that price. Someone else brought us our food. The hamburger steak was good but the baked potato wasn’t. I don’t believe we will ever go back.

Google
What happened with the food and service at Stalvey’s Restaurant & Lounge? This is my update review I have to give them less stars; did they get a new cook? Look at the picture of the “Grilled White Fish”. The food was good, hot and fresh; the only thing that wasn’t that good (to me) was the cornbread. The staff was friendly. I ordered (2) to go plates: White Fish, Sweet Potatoes, Field Peas, Mac & Cheese, and Green Beans. I’ve passed by Stalvey’s several times and when it’s open the parking lot ALWAYS have a lot of cars there, so that was a sign that they must have good food. This was our first time eating food from here. I plan on going back again. Went back again for the second time. We ordered Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Collard greens, Cornbread Dressing, Sweet Potatoes, and Rutabagas.

Google
Our first visit. We walked in the early afternoon and were seated in the back. I say that to say this, I walked through the place and got a good look. There is always a crowd, not this day though( always loads of cars outside and crowds at the door), it was pretty quite. What I noticed was the older carpet on the floors and the out dated furnishings. It just didn't look inviting enough for me to want to eat there. Just my opinion only. On this particular day the aroma of cooking oil smelled old. The wait person was alright. So we never ordered any food. We just left based on appearance and the smell. I hear the food is good though.

Google
I came in for my the first time with a Client of mine the other day and the food we ordered was great. Everything was Fresh and Hot. Our waitress was excellent. I cant remember her name but i know they told me she really only works on mondays. I'll definitely be back.

Leslie W.

Google
First time eating here and the food was good. We were seated immediately, server promptly took our order, and food was served in a timely manner. We had no complaints. The food was good. Just your basic southern food, no razzle dazzle. Could use a bit more seasoning on the catfish though.
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
First time trying the restaurant and it was really good. Country fried steak was hot and fresh. Server was really nice and took good care of us.
google avatar

Love B.

Yelp
Basic describes Stalvey's. Basic food. Basic service. Basic atmosphere. Nothing really stood out. I doubt I'll ever return.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
My burger tasted good but the a condiment were trying sad, one onion ring and a piece of lettuce the size of a half dollar.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
If you're looking for good old style southern restaurant this is the place. From the original 70s decor to the vintage country background music Stalvey's offer good food at a reasonable prices.
google avatar

Sandy R.

Yelp
Good food atvgreat prices, especially in today's economy. Salad was fresh and tasty and had thinly sliced cucumbers in a sweet-vinegar marinade like my grandmother used to make. The fried cauliflower bites hit the spot, and the hot ham and cheese sandwich was a thing to see on a restaurant menu. The ham was an actual slice of a dinner ham, not lunch meat. The menu on weekdays includes a meat and two sides. On Friday and Saturday nights, the menu is more about steaks and fried seafood.

Rachel C.

Yelp
A must try. Greatest prices in town 8.99 meat and two sides until 8pm Monday through Thrusday. This place is a true Covington staple and a hidden gem of town. The ribeye, prime rib, ribs and skillets are amazing with a huge selection of daily vegetables. Great service and fast...again a must try.

Yelp
I've been living in Covington for 48 years never ate at this restaurant before . I decided to try it for the first time. 4/23 7:30PM ... I was put in the very back with my wife , we waited there for 15 minutes before someone come take our drink order. We were getting ready to walk out and go to Longhorn steakhouse , which I wish we did !!!!!!! I ordered a seafood platter and a Pepsi and fried oysters plate . I was forced to drink the Pepsi. My wife had to go hunt down the server couldn't find her so someone filled my Pepsi for me which was very flat. I didn't really wanna drink it l was just really thirsty. . The server was upfront rolling silverware laughing and taking about some the customers and wanted to go home . There was nobody in the restaurant. She left us in the back. The food come out and it was just a bunch of fried greasy food that looks like it's been sitting out. It looks nothing like the photos on their website. I will never come back to this place. The lady at the front ask me did I wanna leave a tip. Honestly, I didn't wanna leave anything because you're tipped based on your service. My wife has been waiting tables her whole life. This is very unacceptable. I left her a $5 dollar tip on a $40 meal which we didn't even eat. I will never come back to this restaurant ever again. Very disappointed if anybody reads this, I'm not a picky person, but there needs to be some changes so this doesn't happen .

Yelp
Great service and southern food! If you are looking for a casual atmosphere with comfort food, this is the best in Covington!
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
Food is wonderful! Service is terrible. Took 15 mins to get onion rings and 30 mins for food. Quiet and relaxed environment. At least our waiter was nice. This was on a Friday night. They were not super busy. Catfish is good.
google avatar

Madison K.

Yelp
Fried fish, chicken tenders, and steak and chicken skillet are all fantastic. Does the carpet need replacing? Absolutely. Great prices and portions.
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
I'm only giving them 2 stars (instead of the one star it deserves) because our service from Stephanie was great! The food though left A LOT to be desired. I had the Meat and 2 sides. I chose country fried steak with mashed potatoes and cornbread dressing. It was a carb kinda night for me - what can I say! The country fried steak was inedible! It had the texture of canned dog food and tasted like I imagine dog food would too! The brown gravy over it and my mashed potatoes had no flavor at all. The cornbread dressing was good but not great. Our server, Stephanie brought me out a ham steak and although it was better than the country fried steak the only flavor it had was an aftertaste of chemicals. Stephanie took my dinner off the check which was nice of her because I did eat the sides. I won't be eating here again.

Yelp
Filet Mignon: the two of us both got the 7 ounce fillet mignon for dinner. One of us had a glass of Cabernet and the other had a Yuengling beer. The food was tasty and generous. Service was friendly and efficient. This was on a busy Friday night around 7 PM. All went well. The ambience is out of a very casual family restaurant

Tess O.

Yelp
This is a popular restaurant for an older crowd... we thought since they looked busy they would be good. Sadly, I can't say that they are. I suspect it is busy from nostalgia and because it is cheap. The food is deep fried yet bland. I got the 7 ounce filet which was unlike any other "filet" meat I've ever gotten and much more had the texture of a low quality strip steak. My husband's sandwich was not very good either. The sides were pretty low quality as well. The service was very friendly and they were polite. There may be something good there since the smoker out front smells good; but we didn't order anything remotely good.
google avatar

Shani A.

Yelp
This restaurant needs a major decor makeover. It was very dingy and dated and weird. There was a big mirror on one wall with vanity lights hanging over it and too-bright light bulbs. The bathroom reminded me of one in an old gas station. Service was good. Food was actually pretty good too and inexpensive. If we lived closer we might get carry-out, but otherwise not eating here. They were busy, so I guess people don't care about the appearance of the restaurant, but we can't get past it.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
We always enjoy eating here. Vegetables are always good! Would give a 5, but they don't have vegetables on Friday pm and during the weekend.
google avatar

Mariano L.

Yelp
La comida era muy mala, mal servicio. nunca volvera. Definitivamente dejó cero propina de dólares
google avatar

Dorinda S.

Yelp
The food was yummy and hot. The prices are unbeatable for the portion sizes. I'm already looking forward to returning!
google avatar

Sheryl H.

Yelp
So disappointed to see the waitress eating out of a big pan of salad with her fingers then you have a fat boy back there standing over top of the food holding a conversation don't think I will be going back there stop holding conversations over the fresh food and please do not let the customer see you eating out of something that is supposed to be serve for the customer
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
No menu, it's on the wall. Takes forever to get food. Food was lukewarm. My mistake to eat there, won't happen again.

Just S.

Yelp
Good food, and that fish sandwich is always my #1 go to! And whoever is hostess up front always shows great customer service
google avatar

Bill Z.

Yelp
The food and service are great. I especially like the grilled chicken salad and my wife usually orders and enjoys the fish and or shrimp. One day while dining we notices a lot of gray heads which caused me to ask if there were an minimum age requirement.

Laniah S.

Yelp
The food is really good and flavorful. When I went the service was really good and the staff was very kind. The ambiance was entertaining because of the music and the staff would talk to you if u just wanted to chat! This is why I sugges this restaurant to all of you guys!
google avatar

Scott E.

Yelp
Always a favorite of ours in Covington! Everything is delicious and Employees are great! Broiled seafood platter is my favorite!

Candace H.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service. From greeter to waiter. Rude, unkind, RUDE! Food was okay the steak that was cooked correctly was decent. But wow the people and service was awful!

Grace W.

Yelp
The food is normally really good but the service is terrible. The staff is always extremely rude and dismissive when they answer the phones. They act as though people placing a to go order is a great inconvenience to them. And then they're almost always out of everything. Also, the lady at the front was extremely rude to the young waitresses. I think she's the same one who answers the phones.

Anne T.

Yelp
The service seems to get worse and never better. There is a blond who usually waits tables in the room to the right. She's rude and does as little as possible. I went to eat today and sat in the area of the restaurant where there are other servers. It's clear that service is NOT VALUED. My husband was brought the wrong order and it took 15 minutes to get the correct one brought to him. I was almost done. We were snapped at by a little girl who could have been the age of my granddaughter because she was never taught manners when I asked for a refill. I never received it. We were not given our bill and had to go to the cashier to get it. The food is acceptable but not outstanding. Go elsewhere.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
We ate there last night. Fried cauliflower came out raw. I ordered a skillet and it came out cold. I saw other skillet come out hot and smoking, but mine did not. I guess our food was forgotten. Both of my kid's meals were ice cold. Our waitress disappeared during our meal. Another waitress had to bring us our food and ticket. Highly disappointed. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Local joint. Solid diner. Don't expect world class service or quality but still yummy.

Mark W.

Yelp
Worst food, service, and decor at a restaurant that I have been to in a long time. I never write reviews but felt I had to protect the population from an establishment such as this. Save your time and money and go to the Waffle House. You will get a better meal.

Charles H.

Yelp
Great place to eat. Steak, fish, and shrimp. BBQ ribs wow You have to try this place Love it

Robin T.

Yelp
Fantastic food. I read other reviews and expected poor service but our server was attentive and quick. We both had steak and they were fantastic. We will be back!

Richard L.

Yelp
If I could do negative stars I would. Save your money and your stomach. McDonald's is a better option.
google avatar

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Yummy! I love Stalveys. Been coming here since I was a kid. They have the great food at affordable prices!

John G.

Yelp
Had the fried seafood platter and is was much better than expected. Wife has one of the skillet dinners which good but she liked my seafood better. Service was very good, not sure about the one star review because of service. Some people are hard to please I think. Building is old and has an old feel but I kind of like that as long as the food is good..which it was. Don't let the appearance scare you off.
google avatar

Monique J.

Yelp
We were seated really quick, the hostess was friendly. We told the waitress about it being our first time and she told us about our options. And made sure I knew about the 1 drink refill which was great to know. We wanted to try it all lol. We ordered: 1. Chicken strips, fries and green beans. It came with honey mustard sauce. The food was good the only thing I would do is add some more seasoning to the green beans. 2. Chopped steak with onions, mashed potatoes and cornbread dressing. The steak was good on flavor but not hot, it was warm. The dressing came with cranberry sauce and was sooooo good. You can tell the mashed potatoes are homemade because you can taste small lumps, they were good just needed more gravy. 3. Chicken livers, potato salad and fried okra. Chicken livers were fried just right and so was the okra. The potato salad was good too. All meals came with corn bread which was dry and could've been better to me. Pineapple upside down cake for dessert is good. It had great flavor and was delicious. Would've been better if heated more with vanilla ice cream. The environment was nice and friendly. A couple sat with there child who was sleepy and crying. The hostess came and tried to make the child feel better. So that shows this is definitely a family restaurant. Another plus in my book.

Yelp
Ok, let me start off this review by saying, I have lived in Covington my entire life, and have had to suffer through multiple restaurants owned by Jim Stalvey. The ONLY thing that has kept Stalveys open is the "good Ol boys" who are loyal to their pal Jim, because it sure ain't the food!! Let's start with the atmosphere, which is flat out awful, old, and somewhat smelly. White boards let you know what the "specials" are, which I guess you are supposed to read before you sit down. Second, the service, which is lackadaisical at best. Servers are always "in a rush" and make you feel like you're putting them out by asking questions. Most of the servers have been working here (or one of his other restaurants) since I was a child, and are cranky and inept in their job. You pay at the front counter, where the old lady will ask "how was everything", but don't say not good....because she really doesn't care. Food quality. If the atmosphere and service hasn't pissed you off enough yet, the food quality sure will. Sure, the price was cheap, but have you ever heard the saying "you get what you pay for"?! Yeah, that applies here....everything tastes like its out of a can(because it probably is), and if you don't eat pork (which I do not), then you are SOL, because EVERYTHING is cooked in pork. As far as the meat, it's pretty low end quality, and is generally either tough or flat out nasty. There isn't one single thing on the menu that is eatable. But let's not stop there, don't order a glass of water, as it tastes like its straight from the toilet! Summary. When all of the "good Ol boys" of Covington either leave or die, this establishment will shut its doors, it's simply that bad. All of Stalveys other restaurants have closed due to poor service, food, and/or lack of business. This one hangs on because of nostalgia, not because of quality. From start to finish the visit is poor, and Stalveys is one or two good restaurants moving to town before they are done for good!

Jay W.

Yelp
Perfect food! Perfect atmosphere! And even better service. Best ribeye steak I've ever had. Just across from the hospital.

Yelp
I was going to start this review by checking the state database on food inspection scores..http://health.state.ga.us/programs/envservices/inspections.asp but could not find a record for it anywhere, until I searched by address, for some reason they go by a different name than what's on the sign out front, you have to search for Sirloin Saloon. Their current score was 86 and on their last 3 inspections there seems to be a recurring theme.. the place isn't too clean. Pretty much the first impression you get when you walk through the door. 7:00PM on a Friday night.. Table for 1 waited just under 10 minutes. Arrived to a table that was wiped off with a dirty rag. Oh well I can live with that. I had the $14.99 Jim's Fillet Mignon.. and I will have to say for the price it was a fine cut of beef.. you could defiantly tell it was fresh. My meal started with the clam chowder, but I think someone just opened a can and poured it right into a bowl, then at best, set it under the heat lamp for 2 minutes. I wasn't going to complain too much, but as I was paying the guy in front of me and the lady behind me complained their food was cold too. the guy in front of me actually sent his back and it came out cold the second time. Not sure what's going on in the kitchen.. but the entire place looks tired, and hasn't been updated since like the 70's.. makes me wonder if half the stuff in the kitchen doesn't work like it supposed to either. The older lady at the register's only comment was to ask if the waitress had apologized, she obviously wasn't steering toward comping anyone anything. oh well..I'm just glad I went by myself and didn't have a large family bill to pay. I almost forgot.. my meal ended with my last swig from my water glass leaving me with part of a plastic wrapper from someones saltine crackers in my mouth.. it must have been in the bottom of my glass.. You know, these things happen but, I wanted to mention it because the lady at the table across from me sent her water back during her meal because something was floating in it... That kinda put the nail in the coffin for me.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
The first step into Stalvey's is like a brick over the head. The atmosphere is so rundown and outdated, it makes me wonder how the kitchen is kept. The menus were tattered and covered in a thin layer of grease. The ''specials'' were written on a dry-erase white board in a far corner of the room, requiring us to get up out of our seats to read it. Prime rib was the special of the day, however baked potatoes were not on the menu...ever (according to the waitress.) The prime rib was stringy and overcooked, seemingly wanting to be in a beef stew.. however that would require potatoes... of which there are none. I highly recommend saving your money by avoiding this dump.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
A steakhouse for people that don't like steak. Or a steakhouse for people that love grease. We walked into the establishment, and I thought we had accidentally stepped into the social security office We were the youngest in our 20's by about 40 years. The waitress came over and was polite, but unable to answer our questions about portion size and other misc questions. (this will come into play later).. we finally just ordered without the info we requested, and she went about her business. 10 minutes later, the old man behind us asked her the same exact question.. and she said, "Let me go get that information for you sir, I wouldn't want you to order without it"... Ridiculous. Anyway, the food arrived. The shrimp was disgusting, and the steak was less than mediocre. I will never again set foot in this restaurant.. and I advise that you do the same.
google avatar

Dustin B.

Yelp
Let me begin by saying I love the food. I was raised in Kentucky and grew up with restaurants like this that provide homestyle cooking in exactly this type of environment. Yes, it's an old-ish place, they do put their specials on the dry-erase board. All that aside, the food is tasty. I usually get either the pork medallions or the turkey dinner. Portions are filling. Now for the reason it gets 2 stars: I have to fight with myself every time I go here. My stomach says yes, but my head says "hell no". I have had ONE polite server out of the FOUR times I have been there. Here's what to expect from your Stalvey's Fine Service: "Whatcha want." When you receive your food: *silence* Don't expect a thank you. Don't expect pleasantries. DRINK SLOWLY... you will be without a refill if you finish your drink. Now, allow me to add one caveat. I am 24 years old. Everyone over the age of 40 gets prime treatment in this facility. Never mind that I ALWAYS tip my waitresses well if I get decent service. My mother was a waitress much of her life, so I respect what they go through. So if you are under 40, avoid this place even if you crave homestyle food. Horrible customer service MUST be punished.
google avatar

Bob T.

Yelp
The food was horrible. Worst burger I've had in my life. No exaggeration. Ugh. Service was ok. Atmosphere was great. But food... absolutely horrible

Lisa M.

Yelp
The food is pretty good and its a good value but the service staff is rude and there basically isn't any customer service. I have been there about 5 times with maybe only one or two times have I had even good not great service. One evening went in and my tea sat empty while the waitress went by our table 3 times with the full tea pitcher in her hand. We never get dinner rolls unless we ask. One night a friend of mine got the chopped steak ..she asked me to taste it because it seemed off .. it was SOOO bad I had to spit it out in a napkin. Their fried chicken salad really good and the steak dinner really good. So good food BAD service

Mark O.

Yelp
Stalvey's is an old favorite among long time locals. Without going into a lot of detail, the owners either need to completely renovate this place or shut it down. It's filthy. The back dining area has water dripping onto a table that people are seated at. If you look up, the ceiling tiles are black mildew, the metal frames are rusted. The seating and flooring is grimy. Horribly dirty.
google avatar

Dan P.

Yelp
Great local eatery...one good clue that this is a great local restaurant is the number of cars and trucks in the expansive parking lot. Great, friendly service and good food at very reasonable prices. Try it, you'll like it!

Tim B.

Yelp
My wife chose for birthday. Not my choice because I work in town and have been there before on business.... unfortunately. I would never take a client. It is 1970 decor meets abandoned building. As usual, we waited 10 minutes for our order to be taken. Food was fairly quick, but under-cooked. Three steaks were bloody, salmon was dry. Service was the worse as usual, just slow and uncaring, like it's 1970 and you are at the only restaurant town again. Got me for $128.00

AdmiralEdge S.

Yelp
Mom & I love eating at Stalvey's. The server's we have encountered have been friendly and professional. The food is down home cooking. The only thing I complain about is their over use of salt but then again I'm not a fan of salt by any means. I love their catfish, onion rings, & filet mignon which is always tender and juicy. You can't beat their prices. We like going during the week so we can eat from their special's board so much to choose from. I wished we would have found them sooner I can't tell you how many times we drove by thinking we couldn't afford to eat there. Glad we finally took a chance on them.
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
Worst food ever. Ordered a "gourmet steak burger" what I got was a barely beef frozen patty, the ones shaped kinda like a flour. So disgusting. Also we waited almost 30 min for the food and it wasn't even busy.

Christine C.

Yelp
Nice quaint little place and very reasonable prices. My husband and I both got steaks, filet mignon & rib eye, and we were both a little disappointed. They were okay but certainly not top notch, so we may go back there again but wouldn't order the steaks.
