10 Spots to Sip a Perfectly-Crafted Old Fashioned Outside the Atlanta Perimeter | Eater

"Chef-owner Billy Streck brought his creative approach to American cuisine to Gainesville when he opened Standard Service in June. While there is a stellar list of craft cocktails on the menu, the Old Fashioned made with Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon is an off-menu treat. Pair it with their chargrilled peaches topped with a hot honey drizzle and Kansas City strip steak frites with caramel, shallot, and dijon sauce." - Vox Creative

The Southern Burger and the Pimento Mac and Cheese are so good and ao unique. This is one of the top burgers I have ever eaten! My daughter's nachos were good as well. I Highly recommend this place!

Google
Food was good. Pretty average burgers. But still good. The deviled eggs were really good. The service was just fair. She seemed as if she did not want to be there. Had to ask for drink refills every time. Waited a long time for the check.

Google
This is such a chill place with fantastic food and service! We tried it out of curiosity today and will definitely come back! I'm pescatarian/vegetarian and had plenty of options to choose from on the menu. Portion sizes were generous, and the food quality was excellent!

Google
I had an awesome experience at Standard Service in Gainesville! I ordered The Standard burger, and it was absolutely amazing — cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Corey provided excellent service, attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Jeremy, the manager, also made sure everything was going smoothly, which really added to the overall experience. Definitely one of the best burgers I've had in a while — highly recommend!

Google
So this place is just off the square, very close to the Boot Barn Hall. You can walk to it from the square. 🙂 We have been several times now and both times it was very good. It has a relaxed, hip, atmosphere and good service. A nice selection of mixed drinks and beer. Both times I have had the burgers. I highly recommend the Southern burger and the El jefe. Both are yummy. 😊 The mac and cheese is awesome. We love the Bavarian pretzel.

Google
The atmosphere and our waitress Peyton were excellent! I would definitely come back but the burger did leave something to be desired for but definitely one of the better burgers we’ve found in our area. We also really loved the Philly. I wish the fries were a little crisper. The wait time for the food was a little long but service and atmosphere is great! Food is definitely a must try!

Google
Amazing! The service, food and cocktails were anything but standard! Sarah G. was our server and she was on point! The entire staff was attentive and friendly. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely return. Deviled eggs were delicious and the burger of the month was mouth watering! The habanero paloma was perfectly balanced and I wish I was there for another round!

Google
Great drinks & food was beyond expectations! We had the deviled eggs, bang bang shrimp, and fried green tomatoes as starters. For entrees we had the sweet potato salad, vege wrap with Brussel sprouts, Ceasar wrap with fries, and pasta. All were so much better than we thought, I mean, they knocked it out the park with the food! The drinks were sensational too, I had a rum drink that was so fabulous and perfect. 10/10 will go back

Yelp
Great little place with a unique atmosphere. Very friendly staff and the food is good. I got the fish and chips and it was some of the best I've ever had. Portion size is good and the fries are incredible. Go check them out. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Enjoyed the deviled eggs. The mahi tacos were awful! They were drenched in the most awful sauce and not worth the money at all!

Rita T.

Yelp
I thought the food was very standard and I was not impressed with the people that work there and it was very expensive.

Yelp
Came here for an early lunch and got seated right away. It's got a nice vibe for a casual place, but nothing that distinct. The food was good, the buffalo wrap the right level of hot, the fries crispy, burger well cooked, but nothing blew me out of the water. Service was generally good but slowed a bit as the place got busier.
google avatar

Lauren O.

Yelp
They have a great outdoor area and dogs are allowed. Part is gravel with more lounge chairs and umbrellas but part is fully covered with normal tables. Note There was a special lunch menu and you can't order dinner items at lunch. I got the standard burger and it was very taste. The fries are extra crispy but also thicker. The service was good for the majority of the meal and the food came out quick. The restaurant is near downtown so only has a few parking spots out front but when you cross the street there's a whole available lot.

Yelp
Great food, a pleasant, casual environment. However, I've found the service to be much lower than "Standard Service."

Yelp
Service was non-existent!!!! Our party showed up later in the evening on a beautiful Saturday; we waited and waited and waited for over 30 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and at least take a drink order but alas, this place doesn't seem to give a crap about patrons! We stood at three different locations (hostess station, bar, and near the kitchen area to flag down somebody to serve our party but was constantly being passed by from the staff who would just stare at us with dull faces. Can't imagine why the place was nearly empty of patrons when we showed up and we certainly will not be returning!

Steve D.

Yelp
we have eaten five different times prior to shows at the boot barn. They are always responsive to any time constraints that we has been wonderful, the staff is cheerful, fun to be there, oh by the way, the food is excellent!
google avatar

Hailey C.

Yelp
Brunch is delicious. Small brunch menu but good options. Bottomless mimosas are always a plus. Their outside patio is perfect on a nice day!
google avatar

Clayton S.

Yelp
Very nice people. Great food. Had several things here and all great. Old Fashioned are really good. The atmosphere is nice. Great bar and multiple TVs. Nice place to grab some food.

Yelp
A really cool place that has been converted to a restaurant/bar from an old gas station. We visited the tap room down stairs. There were lots of beers to try by scanning a wrist band assigned to you when you started a tab (it keeps up with the amount of beer you pour from the taps each time). There were seating areas with comfy couches and chairs. You can also order anything off the menu and eat in the seating areas or on the outside patio. We ordered the pretzel bites as an appetizer while we tried some of the beers. They were hot and tasty with two dipping sauces. I wanted the chicken burger but they were out so had to order the veggie wrap. I added a side of onion rings. The veggie wrap was ok - could have used a little more hummus. The onion rings were hot, crispy, and yummy! The service was good. Overall a great place to hang out!

Yelp
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Once upon a time this used to be a really good place. The food is absolutely disgusting now, the servers look like they're in a daze, and the place has just become another barely-mediocre establishment in an area filled with them. It had SO much potential, and it's sad to see what's happened to them. Just be warned, Wild Wing across the street does it better, and I never thought I'd say that. Shame on the owners...they should be embarrassed as hell.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place since it opened up last year. Our party of 4 stopped in on a Saturday night at dinner time. Maybe that was a mistake. We were asked to wait for a table, even though several were available. There was not enough staff to wait on us. We would have been happy just to sit down and have a glass of water. I'll cut the chase here. Service was very slow. Food was very average. Prices were on the high side. Glad I tried it. I could see going back to sit at the bar and have a cold one. But I'm not making any plans to go back anytime soon. Just too so-so.
google avatar

Yelp
Neat restaurant. Good service. Food was a tick above decent. I'm from Gainesville, but hadn't been back for YEARS. Remembered the service station it used to be. Good place to bring the kids.

Yelp
This was my first visit, and it just missed the mark for me. It was a Sunday at lunch and we were sat at a table and the tables are super close together. The menu is fairly diverse, but overall sandwiches and bar-type food. I ordered the Cubano sandwich with a side of fries. The fries looked fine, but they were dried out and served at room temperature with no salt (and there is no salt on the table). Needless to say, the fries were not good. The Cuban sandwich was a bit different than most I've had before, and was very, very greasy. Just not a fan of this one. They have a taproom downstairs with a large number of beer taps, and some wine taps. I went downstairs to get a beer and there was no one around at all to serve me. And one of the beers I looked at poting was crazy priced as well at $.85 an ounce. That would make for a very expensive IPA at $13.60 a pint! The only save for this place on this visit was at the service was fairly good even though they were clearly understaffed. Parking is also tight with a small parking spot across from the restaurant, yet only a handful of parking spots at the restaurant itself. There is also some street parking in Gainesville and a few blocks from the Gainesville parking garage.

Yelp
The service was great! Sweet people. BUT the food was not good. My friends got the Salmon & I got the garlic parmesan wings. My Wings tasted and smelt like fish... I alerted our waitress, & I was told the cook used the same oil that was used for the fish to cook my wings. They were breaking food code violations, which could be reported.

Yelp
old service station, so neat atmosphere & huge portions (I ordered brunch and could barely make a dent in my food because there was so much)
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
The Donut Burger is to DIE for, don't miss this hidden gem. The service was knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating, even going as far to go into the basement to find the last of the garlic aioli. Rustic interior with a southern charm, Standard Service lives up to the hype.

Robert S.

Yelp
Glad they offer a brunch. Henry was our server. He did a great job. Food was awesome. The standard breakfast and chicken and waffles were great. Thank you.

Yelp
Meh- love the concept and the food was decent but the service the day we went was not good. The downstairs beer wall was closed for a private event so we may go back to check that out. You might have a different experience but the night we went it was disappointing.

Yelp
I was visiting some friends in Gainesville and they suggested we try this. It was cute! I like the play in words. You can tell this used to be an old service (gas) station, and the old school, but modern yet rustic feel is inside and out. Lots of outdoor seating. We only visited the restaurant part, not the taproom. We started with drinks. I got the Down at the Sunset Grill and it was fantastic! I got the street tacos and street corn. The tacos were about 6.5/7 out of 10. They're ere lacking some flavor for me, and they were sitting in juice that made the whole corn tortilla fall apart. I wish there was more sauce. The street corn was good, but I was thinking it was going to come with two cobs since it was pretty expensive. Not worth it in my opinion. I don't have a pic of the pimento Mac n cheese, but that was by far my favorite thing I got!! So creamy and a very large portion! Two people could easily split this. Overall the vibe was cool and most of the food was pretty good.

Yelp
We were very disappointed in the cleanliness of the restaurant today. We have never had that experience at this restaurant before. The table where they wanted to seat us had a puddle under it as if someone spilled a whole glass of water (this was not cleaned up during our meal). The table where we sat was sticky, and there was a rag on the floor right next to us. The food as usual was fantastic. The hostess, a young lady, had her feet up on the hostess stand, watching videos on her phone. very unprofessional. We will think twice before we consider going back.

Yelp
Great service and excellent food. Nice little gem spot in downtown Gainesville Ga!l worth visiting l!

Yelp
Fun place and good service. Had pretzel bites and were good. Good beer selection in basement

Yelp
New place in Gainesville right off Jessie Jewel at the start of the Gainesville Square downtown area. They are right next to the IHOP with a huge parking lot and parallel parking option. The front has a beautiful front courtyard with tons of seating and fire pits and inside is a smaller eating area with low and high tops with a full bar. Downstairs is the gem of pay as your drink tap wall with over 50 selections from IPA, Craft, Ciders and Wines. The menu is small but defined. From small plates to burgers, a kids menu and desserts. They have an extensive drink menu and of course the tap room downstairs. We got the standard burger, the Cuban dip, kids fish sticks and pretzel with cheese for our apps. Everything was seasoned well, hot and fresh. Food did take a while to come out but worth the wait!

Yelp
Used to be great, but now the food is disgusting, the last 3 times I've been here, my burger was way overcooked to the point where the meat crumbled like sand when I bit into it, the bacon was like rocks (I had to take it off my burger because it was so hard I thought i had bit into a toothpick) and the bun was soaking wet. In these last few times the Philly cheesesteak has also seen a massive decline in quality, the meat on it genuinely had the consistency of beef jerky. This place is too expensive for the food to be inedible so often, sadly I don't think I'll be returning

Yelp
We love going to Standard Service for a drink and a small bite! On our most recent visit, we had the deviled eggs, Korean wings, and big pretzel. All delicious! The cocktails were seasonal and fun too (we especially love the Bless Your Heart, if you want a true taste of GA). Many of the other menu items don't wow us flavor-wise (and for the price point) but are still solid, and the beer on tap is solid generally as well. In the summer we love hanging at the bar or sitting by a fire pit, and it can be cozy indoors in the winter too. In our experience, servers have always been super nice and accommodating.

Yelp
Went here for father's day. So cute and the service was excellent. The waffles and chicken was ok, but the coffee was amazing. Definitely Will try it again

Yelp
I ate at standard service tonight and had the doughnut burger with fries and sweet tea. Everything was delicious and Kasey was an awesome server . I recommend this place if you are in the Gainesville ga area . It is a very good food place

Yelp
3pm on a Sunday - open - but we walk in to a snotty hostess that said "we aren't serving food til 330" - nice ... then advertise that and cut the attitude with the snotty staff. We've been here MANY times but not likely to be back - how about train them to be pleasant and say something like - "we are on shift change and have a limited menu " - crappy attitude

Elinor K.

Yelp
We decided to eat at Standard Service on a Wednesday evening after my grandchildren's high school tennis match. Unfortunately, the kids had to wait until all games were over so my daughter-in-law and I decided to leave before the others and get a table. It was 8:30 by that time and we were told that the kitchen closes at 8:45 so we had my son and the kids text us their orders. Even with our 'problems', our server, Henry, was gracious. It became a joke (I think Monty Python was quoted) that they were out of almost everything we originally wanted (they were getting a delivery the next day, Henry said). All our final orders were delicious, though. It was also my son's birthday and we wanted to surprise him with dessert. They were out of both desserts so we asked about ice cream which Henry brought to the table with a flourish. He was delightful, our orders were cooked to perfection and were delicious. My compliments to both Henry and the kitchen staff for being so accommodating. I want to add that we'd eaten her several times before (especially when I'm visiting) and have never been disappointed.

Yelp
All I can say is FINALLY a restaurant in Gainesville that isn't pizza, Mexican, or an overpriced steakhouse and serves very good quality food! Being a local I have been constantly frustrated to have to drive out of my way to get quality food when there is such potential in my backyard! I have zero complaints about this restaurant. The ambiance, the food, the drinks, nothing disappoints. We started with the chicken fried deviled eggs which were great! For main entrees I had the fried chicken breast and my fiancé had the steak both of which were wonderful! We ate upstairs and then ventured downstairs to the tap room. This is a very cool concept where you scan your wrist band and pour your own beer then pay by the ounce when you're done. We will be back here again and again!

Yelp
I saw this newly-opened restaurant on Instagram and as a appetizer lover, I was drooling while scanning the menu. There were so many unique and delicious small bites that caught my attention! My husband and I took our first opportunity to drop the kids off at day camp and drive the 45 minutes for a lunch date. The building is beautifully remodeled and the atmosphere is cozy. For a Thursday, it was fairly busy and we were seated about 20 minutes after we arrived. Our waitress was friendly but the entire service was exceptionally slow. We waited a good hour for the four appetizers we ordered to arrive, even though we watched literally everyone seated after us get their food first. We're patient and understand that they're a newer restaurant so I'm not even knocking them for this, my issue was the food was just....not good... -Blue Cheese Sweet Potato Chips: These were SO soggy. Not a single crispy chip on the plate. They arrived in a manner that I would expect to find them in a styrofoam to-go container the next day, straight out of the fridge. They were soggy, chewy, and you were unable to dip them in the container of blue cheese dip because they were so floppy. The dip was really greasy and tasted more of Sherry wine than blue cheese. -Chargrilled Peaches with goat cheese, arugula, toasted pecans, and hot honey drizzle: This was about the only decent thing we ordered. It had good flavor but the peaches were hard and for $8, I don't think I even got a whole peach. -Street Tacos with pulled pork, cojita cheese, cilantro slaw, chipotle aioli: The flavor was decent but there wasn't enough slaw to taste and it was absolutely drowning in aioli. The kicker was that the two tacos came in corn tortillas that were not warmed at all. They were dry and cracking as picked them up. -Roasted Green Tomato and Goat Cheese Dip with blue corn tortilla chips: I was most excited for this but it was just kind of bland. Maybe some kind of aioli/chutney drizzled on top or actual fried green tomato pieces would help? It was okay but wouldn't think about again. For a $60 lunch, we left hungry and feeling like we would've been happier at McDonalds. I hate to say it, but it was just a big disappointment.

Yelp
Downstairs is a very good self pour tap room. Great for large parties. Up stairs has an amazing selection of cocktails and knowledgeable bartenders who can make whatever you like. Both have have great food.

Yelp
Relaxed atmosphere. Good draft beer selection. Service was very good. Great place to hang out on a Saturday afternoon. Grilled Chicken BLT and Chili were delicious. We will be back!

Yelp
Lunchtime visit to standard on a Friday. Restaurant less than half full. My son Ordered hotdog and I ordered a standard hamburger, medium well. Food came out within a reasonable amount of time, considering the crowd. On picking up the hamburger I noticed uncooked meat around the outside edges. I turned the hamburger to the other side and took a bite to reveal mostly raw burger. The one waitress, who was working by herself, finally came back by and I asked if there was a chance the burger could get put back on the grill. She said "I will get them to just make another one for you". Fair enough. That order was apparently at the absolute end of the list, as many other people received their food while I waited. Burger finally came back and was cooked to a medium well color. Wasn't bad but just a basic burger. Took over an hour for lunch. Burger and a hotdog. The waitress came back over with our check and asked if everything was OK. I responded that it was the second time around. She responded that "we cook to FDA regulations" upon looking at the check, I realize that she had written down medium when I had asked for medium well. The manager had taken the charge for the burger off, but then apparently she had put the charge back on the bill. Standard is apparently sub-standard now. Won't go back. Kind of a shame.

Yelp
Food is always good. Service is good. Prices are good. Go for the southern burger. It's a cool spot, checkout the downstairs.

Yelp
After hearing mixed reviews on this place we finally had the opportunity to give it a try this past Sunday with guests in town who suggested brunch Sunday. We arrived shortly after Noon to what appeared to be a slow morning, but soon the folks rolled in as church crowd arrived. We were immediately seated & only about 5 tables occupied and a couple outside. Our server immediately took our drink orders and promptly brought them. We ordered four main dishes off the brunch menu - a separate menu from their regular one & the wait began. Apparently the waffle machine is moody we were in wait. But I think the food & venue was great. So is the location. Can imagine this is also a great spot for evenings, happy hours. The food we had was excellent!

Yelp
I dont normally post reviews, but for this one, I am! My husband and I moved from Cumming and we definitely love local restaurants. This one did not disappoint. The donut burger was amazing. The quality of meat was definitely there. The broccoli and cheese, my fav!! I had the grilled chicken and blackberry salad that was soooo good!! The blackberries were just the right amount of sweetness. I will judge a restaurant based on their ranch and honey mustard and boy this place knocked it out of the park!!!! They were delicious! The taproom was so fun!!! The only con I have was the pretzel. It was a little hard for my liking but we loved everything! Service was top notch! They took my husbands burger back before it even got to us because the egg was sliding off. I appreciate that attention to detail. We can't wait to go back!!!

Yelp
Great food. The Danny's burger double with Swiss and over easy egg. The first bite took me at least 45 seconds to snap out of all the yummyness. Then it's a knife and fork burger. A must try. The fries are hot crispy, and yummy. Got a side order of wistershire aoilo.

R S.

Yelp
Service extremely slow. I think they are short staffed. Cinnamon bun is fair at best. Outside was very crusty. I prefer a soft bun rather than needing a knife to cut Avocado toast was fair. Avocado was creamy rather than lumpy. Burrito w chorizo was good. Probably going to try other spots for brunch. Bottomless mimosas were good when you could get them.
google avatar

Yelp
We went on a double date and order Phillys and Hamburgers (ordered them medium). They were so charred they tasted burnt. No reason stood out to ever visit again. The Phillys were good though.

Jill W.

Yelp
Made reservations- arrived at 12:45 and then was informed they were no longer serving brunch although the reservation person and servers stated they served to 1:00. we were sat outside and it took ten minutes for drinks and orders. It 30 minutes later for food after being pressed several times. One table waited over an hour for a shareable oatmeal.

Yelp
Great addition to the restaurant scene in Gainesville. Large selection of draft beers and delicious food options make this a nice addition to the area. Also the ambience is the real winner here!

Yelp
This is our second time coming here, and we love the death in Taxes Dauquiri & Summer Fling. The vibe in this Place is AMAZING I just think that they should be open a little longer than 10pm on the weekends. The Hostess Ruby is very nice and welcoming! And our server Sussie was Amazing!!!!!! Will be bringing friends and family !

Yelp
Tried Standard Service with family who lives in town. The restaurant sounded fun and had a good atmosphere. Service staff was friendly but seemed a little inattentive. We decided to go to this place for the self service beer and wine taps which were fine. We also ordered wings and a burger. Staff didn't bring us any silverware or napkins. We did ask for napkins and were given brown paper hand towels instead of silverware rolls. Eventually we noticed some silverware rolls by the service counter and got them for ourselves. The chicken wings were dry and looked like they had been sitting out for a long time before they were served to us. Carrots and celery were limp and dried out as if they had been cut two weeks prior. Burger was okay and fries were greasy and cold. Would not recommend.

Natalie J.

Yelp
Cute little spot for a date, enjoyed the food and so happy to have gluten free options available.

Shannon

Yelp
Food is good, but they have a whole downstairs area with a Pour Taproom style pay by the ounce set up that NEVER HAS ANYONE THERE! I'm afraid it's probably because it ends up being really expensive to pay by the ounce... like around $10-12 per pint/serving. If they could offer some sort of happy hour down there or lower the prices a scooch, that ends up being a little expensive for a couple of sips of cider or beer. Fun concept though and a great way to try new things if you just want to get a sip or two of each. Hope they can advertise that more and hopefully get some more folks to the in the downstairs area. :)

Yelp
I have nothing but good to say about this restaraunt. Service was great. Food was awesome.Everything taste like it fresh.Lots of flavor. Good variety on menu. If you want a GREAT EXPERIENCE go to this restaraunt .
