I'm a big fan of Standish Cafe, which used to be Colossal Cafe in south Minneapolis. While the restaurant itself is a little small, it packs a big punch with its food and great service. Here's the quick bottom-line:
* Food: 4.5 out of 5 stars
* Service: 4.5 out of 5 stars (yes, I'm a big advocate of half star ratings)
* Value: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Based on all of the 4.5 stars for the three main categories I consider, I decided to round up, also because I like smaller, neighborhood, non-chain restaurants. Here are the details for our visit ...
In keeping with tradition, my brother and I went to Standish Cafe for brunch after church on Sunday morning. I think we're still on quest to find the best brunch in the Twin Cities and Standish is right up there with the best and I say that based on quality of food, service, and value.
Fortunately, you are able to put your name on the wait list online, which is something I highly recommend. I think it goes without saying that if a restaurant is good, it will be busy, if it isn't good, then you'll have no problem getting a table. Even though I was on the wait list and it didn't look like there would be much of a wait at 10:15 on Sunday morning, we had to wait a few minutes to be seated and during that wait, I noticed half a dozen walk-ins who had to wait longer than we did. There's a covered addition where people can go sit and have coffee while they wait for a table.
Let's talk about food - since I'm a HUGE fan of breakfast/brunch, anything that offers eggs, salty smoked meats, and sweets like pancakes, biscuits, etc. usually draws my attention and Standish definitely has these characteristics. I had read about the biscuits ahead of time, so I knew that was going to be a must. I also scouted out the Brussel Sprout Hash - a nice healthier alternative than your traditional eggs, meat, potato, etc., not to mention our server, who was terrific by the way, suggested we try something different since you can get eggs and bacon anywhere (one of the truest statements during brunch). The hash comes with 2 eggs, which I got scrambled, even though over easy would be great to mix into the hash. There were some diced yukon potatoes, plenty of flavorful, smoky pancetta, some garlic and onion, as well as a couple well proportioned dollops of goat cheese. With this dish, you also get your choice of toast, english muffin and of course the biscuit, which would be a crime not to get. The biscuit is so large (and flaky) that it comes on a separate plate and there's some house made jam, which was a perfect complement.
My brother opted for the Biscuits & Gravy. As I've stated before, I think Scott is becoming a Biscuits & Gravy connoisseur as that's his go-to dish. He's also a big fan of eggs benedict, but since Standish has these terrific biscuits, it only made sense to get the Biscuits & Gravy and I think we both determined he made the right choice. The sausage gravy was very flavorful and yet, not too rich.
Coffee was an additional $3.50 each but well worth it as we had multiple cups. The service was outstanding and very friendly. As you can tell, I can't say enough good things about my experience at Standish Cafe and since it was so good, I think we're going back tomorrow (Thursday), so twice in one week. I noticed on the menu, they have Aebleskivers, which is a Danish snack that look like donut holes and what I've read it sounds like the texture is more like a European pancake. Needless to say, I can't wait to try them and I'm planning on getting the Forager Omelet, which has a wild mushroom mix, swiss, and chicken sausage, also served with a biscuit and hash browns, which look terrific. Standish has a small parking lot, but there's also ample on street parking around the block for free.
