Absolutely do not go here. $18.00 for a sandwich that's mediocre at best. If you're looking for a fresh sandwich, I'd suggest heading over to the Farmington Deli instead. Much better food, way lower prices, and the service there is incredible.

Google
38.49 for two sandwiches is ridiculous. I might be able to justify it if the sandwichs were made to a good size but the "Super Corned beef" bread was touching it was lacking anything but lettuce. It's a shame because my family has been going here for years. Last time I'll be making the drive.

My family and I have been Star Deli fans forever!!! They used to have the best everything. The quality has gone downhill, and the prices went way up. The whitefish spread has more oil in it, than my car engine. $20 thrown in the garbage. The soup has too much salt, the corn beef is dry and chewy. The salmon spread like the whitefish spread is way too oily. I have lived on the east side for a while now, but take a monthly drive to this Deli, and spend a lot of money when I go. Unfortunately, I will no longer be doing it. I spoke with the staff asking if the owner was in, but no luck. So sad because this deli has been a part of my family and I for so long.

Food is great. Ordering was great but the cashier was very abrupt to the customer in front of me. It was my first time here and I started at the order here sign and moved to the register. Other items are available soups, cakes, drinks, etc. As a first time customer I assumed like the person in front of me that you add those items at the end....similar to a Subway or Jimmy johns but the cashier sent the person in front of me back to the start of the line because you can't add on wants you pass the order here section. So how do you order a cake slice, soup or pick out a drink if you can't see those items until you are at the cashier? I do not need to return to see another customer belittled.

I recently returned to Star Deli after several years out of state, to check if their Seafood Salad tastes as I remembered. YES, it does! My fav now is Seafood Salad with a slice of Carrot Cake, all eaten with a spoon.🥄 😋

Ordered a tray for break fast. Not a good food experience. The ordering and pick up went fairly easy. The actual tray failed mine and my guest expectations. The lettuce that covered the tray was wilted and dark green. The chicken salad and tuna salad had been so processed, there was hardly any texture….flavor was minimal, the aluminum trays were stuffed with lettuce halfway to the top. my guests were very kind but I noticed they hardly ate any of it. It’s because it wasn’t good. The sliced vegetables cheese and pickles were fine. We were not happy with the tray in general and when I returned the physical tray today, i let them know that I would no longer be ordering trays from Star Deli. The general manager was upset and said how can we make this better . I wasn’t looking for any sort of financial return. Just wanted them to know that their quality is lacking. The general manager called the daughter of the owner to come and talk to me. She stood there with her eyes, bewildered and curious and when I told her my Dissatisfaction she said “oh OK. Well, nobody else called to complain…. So…. Sorry you feel that way” 😳 Bye bye Star Deli…. Hoping this granddaughter doesn’t someday own the deli, because she has absolutely no concern for the customer.

My family has been ordering from here for over 40 years. The sandwiches are amazing. The best meats, and the best bread. Service is always wonderful. The new dills are so good.

Google
This place used to be a great place to visit. My recent visits have been very disappointing. I usually get the New Yorker on grilled rye. Not so great these days. Most days the staff is moody. Never know what kind of atmosphere you will be walking into. I stop going for awhile one guy was so rude on a regular basis that I decided that I wasn’t paying for a bad sandwich and experience rudeness from employees. I may not never return. So far it’s been a few months. The staff just seems so miserable!!!

Tim M.

Yelp
The staff was fine / service very good, ambience is a carryout place so there doesn't really matter, and the Reuben did not disappoint! Food 4.5 out of 5 Service: 4.5 out of 5. I'll just round that up to five! There's another deli I think, and I can't remember its name, nearby in Southfield, with a bit better corned beef -- Zingerman's in Ann Arbor is pretty much tops -- but this one is just fine. Longstanding Jewish-style corned beef specialty deli tradition upheld! Can't wait to try the pastrami next time around.

Bob B.

Yelp
As good as any deli in NYC. They've been doing it since at least the mid 70s since that's when I first tried the Star corned beef special sandwich and it's as great now as it was then. Very friendly ladies working the counter on Saturday and the sandwiches, obviously made to order come out quickly.

Natalie M.

Yelp
The food is only outshined by the service!! Star Deli is a decades old favorite, and I stop in to grab sandwiches anytime I'm out that way. Today I grabbed my trusty favorite (Pastrami Special) and a Corned Beef special for my husband. We had only intended to eat half, but neither of us could put them down.

Ann W.

Yelp
It has been a while since my last visit but since I was in the area, it was the perfect opportunity to stop in. Star Deli is tiny compared to other suburban places, set up for to-go only. It makes use of its space well though. There are refrigerated cases filled with cold beverages, shelves of potato chips, and various candy bars and snack cakes. Despite the temptations, I only wanted a corned beef sandwich: a stack of lean corned beef, cole slaw, and cheese on fresh, sturdy rye bread. This was a good choice. I enjoyed the tasty sandwich, a combination of flavors and textures. The staff was friendly and cordial toward me and had a great rapport with each other. In the 5 minutes that it took to make my sandwich, I checked out the merchandise and listened to the easy conversation between the team members.

Geo T.

Yelp
Okay so I drive an extra 25 miles for a Star Deli Reuben! Of course it was crowded and nonstop action at the grill. Now I gotta get this out - I paid $25.04 for the sandwich, chips & a Doc Brown's - I asked for 2 extra lousy squeeze packets of MUSTARD and they actually charged me an additional .50¢ !!! WTF is going to on in this country? Kraft-Heinz, French's & Star Deli shame on you

She-She C.

Yelp
Good customer service courteous and delicious food I highly recommend their corn beef sandwiches very flavorful and juicy

Tavia T.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer for over 15 years. My favorite deli for corn beef, Today by far was my worse experience. The sandwich maker today was rude , unprofessional, unpleasant even another customer that said he has known the owner for since the 80s asked "do theses guys bitch all the time?" Before my order I said hello how are you he just looked at me for a moment I thought he didn't hear me so I said it again , he walked right away and proceeded to ask my husband what he wanted to order , my husband said I'm with her so he just looked at me so I ordered (he got our food wrong of course) and had to remake our sandwiches. He was so rude and when he Slammed the hood of the grill I wanted to watch him make my sandwich today was bad. Ask the cashier she will tell you.

Lulah T.

Yelp
Best deli meats in the area!! Service is great! Small space so it gets crowded sometimes.. but that's because everyone wants what they have!!!

Frank P.

Yelp
As always there is no place that has better corned beef than Star. Fun, friendly, professional staff. I always look forward to talking with them. Clean efficient, you know you will get good stuff.

Janice B.

Yelp
Some staff could use some cultural and diversity training. I did not feel welcome in this establishment I believe that when a costumer enters establishment they should be acknowledged.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Best corned beef I've ever had! Been going to this place all my life & I've tried mannnnnny different spots & this is the greatest. Love the traditional family vibe! So grateful they have stood the test of time, it's most definitely well deserved!

Amanda S.

Yelp
The only reason this deli has stars on Yelp is that their positive reviews from over 4 years ago were all 5 stars - this is no longer the case! High prices are one thing, but add on bad attitudes and below average food - it earns its ranking. The service was rude (dark hair woman with large glasses) and the prices are very high - beyond what you'd expect from traditional increases. They are charging more than Zingerman's yet providing below average sandwiches. My total was $18 for their Turkey special which had average size white bread, Kroger style turkey meat, one slice of Swiss, slaw, and dollop of dressing.

La P.

Yelp
Let me first begin by saying I have been going to Star Deli for over 25 years. Even after I moved about an hour away, I would still make the drive to get delicious, quality corned beef for a somewhat higher price. I would love to see the owner and his son in the establishment working side by side to ensure great quality and great service. I am sad to say, I will no longer be making the drive. I went for a visit and purchased a corned been that is now a dollar and some change lower than $20. That's a huge cost for a sandwich. My expectation would be that it would at least be the same quality and a decent amount of corned beef to substantiate the cost. Bear in mind, I am not saying they needed to add more than what they have used in the past; however, I am saying maintain the sandwich as it had been to justify the additional cost. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I received a sandwich that didn't even make it close to the edges of the rye bread. In fact, the height of the sandwich could be compared to that of a double meat salami sandwich. It was more bread than meat. I cannot substantiate paying almost $20 for rye bread and a spit of meat. For those of you that may want to retort with comments around inflation and the like, I recently went to the infamous Katz deli in NY and their sandwiches are large and outstanding with cost similar to Star Deli. The difference is, they know their customers will frequent the business and pay the price to get quality food at a price that coincides with the value. It is a sad day that I will no longer go to Star Deli.

Dorothee M.

Yelp
The best corned beef sandwiches around. All the sandwiches are good. Wish we had this type of corned beef on the east side. Great rye bread, corned beef is very tender and tasty. Its worth the drive, while there, try their cheesecake, strictly New York We always get two sandwiches, eat one in the car before going home, its THAT good. Try the bagels at the store next door, authentic

Victor A.

Yelp
My go to corn beef sandwich in Michigan! You can't go wrong! The best tuna sandwich in michigan no doubt hands down! The place is pricey but after you eat it you say I would pay that for that sandwich they are far from stingy! The best Jewish Deli in michigan I have been eating here for over 25 years! Please enjoy the pastrami is killer as well and you can get A full line of better made chips!

Sky S.

Yelp
My husband has been coming to Star Deli every time he is in Detroit for the last 15 years. So I decided to try despite its review on Yelp. And I thoroughly ENJOYED our meal! It was so good we had bought more corned beef and pastrami along with other sides to take home to share with the family!! Though the line may seem long, it took us only about 5-10 minutes to order. Star Deli is only accepting 3 customers inside the store (with masks wether Vaccinated or not) at a time due to limited capacity, there is a line out the door. BUT the staff members were efficient so the line went down quickly. I ordered the Corned Beef Special with Pastrami. Though I'm not a fan of coleslaw, the combination with the meat, Russian sauce and bread went very well together. Star Deli's coleslaw seemed more on the crunchy side. I really liked it! Their FRESH Homemade Rye Bread was SO GOOD!!! The outer side was crunchy yet sweet while the inner side was soft! One sandwich was definitely enough to fill me! It might be small to share between two people unless it's a snack. It was so good we ended up buying few pounds of corned beef (one pound of lean corned beef), pastrami, chopped liver, coleslaw, sauerkraut, cheese and fresh breads to try and make at home! The reasons I could see Star Deli's rating not being at 5 is: 1. Who seemed to be the store manager is rude. For example, one customer came in without a mask because he is vaccinated. He thought he did not need to wear masks per law anymore. The manager could've just kindly asked him to wear a mask instead of being rude and making lots of other comments. 2. Price. I can see how the high price could affect the rating. Because we are in Detroit, people do not expect city deli shop prices.

Yelp
I came here with the highest of hopes, to see if they are any better than Steve's Deli up the road (which I like). So much for first impressions. Star Deli is small, dimly lit, and nothing fresh is on display (I think the refrigerated display case said it was out of order maybe - totally empty) - but worst of all for me, was just standing there like a dope while the workers (with unhappy faces I might add) did not even acknowledge my presence - I was the only person there and apparently it was too much trouble for them to greet me - zero eye contact... so I left and never got to try their food. I will not go back and I resent that they wasted my time.

Vincent L.

Yelp
4 star for the price but nevertheless it is a good deli with family service. Seems to be a stable in Southfield it is right off telegraph Rd so it is pretty easy to go there. Better than Potbelly's across the street for sure.

Hillary R.

Yelp
They could not have been ruder. We went in 30 minutes before they closed and were annoyed that we were ordering sandwiches. They said grill was off and they wouldn't turn it on. They kept saying they closed in 30 minutes. They were rolling their eyes, talking about us behind the counter, and then kept saying it wasn't 'their' job to do the baked goods but the cashier told us the same thing. $85 later for uncooked sandwiches and fowl mouthed service. I'd rather spend more money at Steve's. Wish there would have been a manager on-site. I would have walked out if we didn't have company coming over. Appalling.

Elaine G.

Yelp
Still just as good as it was years ago....The best Cornbeef Ever !!!!!

Karol C.

Yelp
Star Deli is just like the delicatessens I've been to in New York. I've been carrying out fresh and delicious sandwiches from here for a few years. My favorite deli meat is their corned beef. It's so tender and brined very well. The flavor is great. I usually order a Reuben. Their sauerkraut is pickly and tender. The deli carries various meats, cheeses and sauces. They also have delicious salads, fresh sausage and many other deli favs. I love that the coolers are stocked with a plethora of drinks. They also sell old school treats such as Moon Pies. Parking is plentiful as the deli is in a strip of stores. The staff is very friendly. Your patronage is definitely appreciated. Prices are reasonable and service is quick. The deli is carryout only.

Ban C.

Yelp
This is absolutely ridiculous paid $32 for a corn beef sandwich a tuna sandwich and a cup of soup and there's barely any corn beef and tuna in the sandwiches!! Not like they used to be! Waste of my time and money!!

Dionne W.

Yelp
I purchased a Tuna Melt on Rye the worst sandwich ever , the bread was hard the tuna had no flavor dang were the sweet relish?? the cole slaw I asked on the side was also nasty, oh yea don't let me forget about the nasty pickles NO love in that sandwich at all!! The worst experience was really disappointed and surprised heard it was a good place I guess the only sandwich they are good for is their Corn beef!

Doris H.

Yelp
After posting my one star review Of star deli. I called and told the owner about the sandwiches I bought. He told me to come in and he would give me replacements. When I arrived I showed him the sandwiches I bought. He told me " I will only give you a half of sandwich for placement of the half you ate."! I thought to myself this guy is UNBELIEVABLE. As long as I live, and anyone I know who patronizes this deli to NEVER PATRONIZE THIS DELI EVER.. Customer service did not exist regarding my dissatisfaction..

L B.

Yelp
This is the Worst deli in the Detroit area. They have cut down their already overpriced sandwiches., soups & other salads & liver. We spent over $50.00 for 3 tiny sandwiches a 1/4 cup of soup & a very tiny chopped liver. On top of this they were rude to everyone- especially unkind -given the many elderly people waiting very politely to procure a few items for Thanksgiving. We have gone here for years & I can honestly say we will NEVER be back. Front Page Deli is much better. You do not mistreat your loyal customers- especially the elderly. Also they DO NOT ITEMIZE THEIR RECEIPTS - SO YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY CHARGED YOU FOR IF YOUR ORDER IS WRONG!!! 0*

Lindsay W.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorites of all time. We have been coming here for years, and the food is always delicious. If you order soup, they will offer you bread heels for free too!

Anthony B.

Yelp
Excellent corned beef and the rye bread was as expected. Crunchy on the outside and dense and chewy on the inside. The only thing is this place is EXPENSIVE. I walked out with 1 loaf of bread and 1/2 pound of corned beef spending $22.00. I know prices are high right now but felt this was a bit ridiculous.

Patrick B.

Yelp
The bomb as usual Wonderful old school style deli. Kosher and all. Highly recommend this place. I have never had a bad sandwich yet and don't expect one. This is what I miss about the Detroit metro area and hate about Indianapolis Will be back for sure

Paula S.

Yelp
Not like it use to be. The onion roll was cold. The tomato was at the end. I've had better back in the day.

Chad C.

Yelp
I have been coming to Star Deli for decades. I love this place. The company I work for will get the star deli tray. I love their tuna fish. If you have never had Star Deli, you are missing out.

Tamica J.

Yelp
This place is REALLY EXPENSIVE! I stopped in for a corned beef sandwich on an onion roll, and it was SMALL (charged extra for lean meat), and cost me between $10-13. When I tasted the corned beef, it was really salty. If you're sodium conscience like me, beware! So I like lox n bagels. I get the bagels next door from the bagel place, and bought lox from here. They charge like $10-15 a pound for smoked salmon. I do not come here. Wayyyyy too expensive and their portion sizes are smaller than their competitors. It's amazing they've been in business so long.

Bruce K.

Yelp
The best corned beef this side of New York City, though there is a great NY style deli in Charlotte that I think is a slightly bit better. I opted for the super corned beef sandwich, nothing special. I received a nice sized sandwich that had a good portion of corned beef, a slice of Swiss, Russian dressing and cole slaw. Basically, it's a Reuben without the grilled part. It was excellent. The rye bread was tasty and the crust was solid and chewy as rye is supposed to be. Maybe the slice was a little thicker than I'd like but that's only because I'm seriously nitpicking. I also got a slice of New York cheesecake. A wall of cold sodas and drinks. Even a few beers here. I nabbed a Doctor Brown's Diet Cream soda and a Faygo Vanilla Creme to do a taste test. It ain't cheap, but it sure is good. Star Deli is almost entirely take out. There are two two-top tables outside. That's it.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Food is good. However, the customer service is piss poor. Employees were extremely rude and it felt very racially motivated. Will not be supporting this business anymore in the future.

Richard C.

Yelp
1 for bone chilling rude cook. Don't know how long he's been there. My mom and I have frequented Star for many years. My extended family have catered for the holidays over the years. The food is fantastic. I bit my tongue so hard after the interaction with this cook on 5/27/23 around 3-3:30 pm. They have the plexiglass betwn them and customers. The voice drains out. He said "Can I help you?" to my mom. She couldn't hear well enough and his 1 second later snarky response to a cook we couldn't see was "Didn't I say that loud enough?" Also, looking like come on now you heard me. Really? We only want a respectful interaction. Wish Harry (owner) was on the line. That can't be happening if he's there. My motive here is to just get the cook to realize at times he's very rude. And learn from his abruptness attitude. We will not have him wait on us. What business wants to hear this? If it comes to you losing your job that's on you. I want you to improve. I don't want to see you lose your job. But, it could happen. Own your attitude and realize you're hurting business. Try again. Not with a snarky remark but a professional repeat "Can I help you?" I'm not sure if Harry reads these. Hope he sees this one.

Benjamin S.

Yelp
the haters are coming out in their clown masks -- I Genuinely Do Not Care if you remember it being better during the reagan administration i implore all of you: sit in your car parked in the cramped-feeling-but-not-actually-cramped parking lot on a cold, overcast day and blankly stare across that desolate stretch of twelve mile at the UBreakIFix storefront while eating a star deli reuben off your knees and tell me, In All Seriousness, that you haven't ascended to a higher plane of existence

Maureen S.

Yelp
Great sandwiches that fill us up so much We don't need dinner! We order from here weekly & enjoy the corned beef on rye sandwhich & the pastrami & corned beef sandwhich. Love the new pickle & hubby likes the old pickle which come with sandwhich. Covid protocols followed, we always call ahead & get there before 11:30 am because they are busy.

Bill D.

Yelp
I used to love this place- but something has changed. The last couple corned beef sandwiches have had fatty tough corned beef. Unfortunately it's not worth my time and money until things get better- especially for the high prices.

Brandon R.

Yelp
Love having them so close to work! Love the club (add cheese!) instead of going to a local sub chain, it's great to have a great deli just around the corner. Those pickles!!

Sandra F.

Yelp
Best Reuben I've had in Michigan! Highly recommend! Location was a little hard to find. Thank goodness we persevered!

Bradley P.

Yelp
I have been a customer for nearly 40 years, though it has been less frequent now that I have been working remotely. As many have said, the corned beef is to die for, as is the pastrami. My toughest decision is which of the two to get! While I enjoy Reubens, I find that the Pastrami and Corned Beer Special - meat, coleslaw, and Swiss on rye- will survive a 30 minute take home trip better. I was concerned to see some more recent comments saying that the portions were small. I was there last month and the portions were the usual giant sandwiches! Yes, they have gone up in price but compared to others they are still a great value. Best to Sid Jr and his team. I suspect that Sid Sr. have probably passed given his age, but he was a great guy too.

Sherri S.

Yelp
I've been going here for YEARS!!!! It's my go to for corned beef sandwiches, Faygo and BetterMade Chips. It's not super fancy, it's a grab yourself sandwich and go type place. Which I've found have the best and most consistent sandwiches.

Lee G.

Yelp
I first came to the Star Deli when house hunting in the Detroit area in 1980 but move away in 1987. It has been my favorite Deli anywhere ever since. It is a must visit when I am in the area.... Several below suggest that the long time owner (for 50 years or more) may no longer be involved. That is very understandable. Paid them a visit earlier this week and I must admit that my standard corned beef on rye with mustard was a first ever disappointment. To whomever may be the new Manager and/or Owner...if it isn't broke, don't fix it. The business has survived for 50 years because the food was GREAT. PLEASE don't mess it up!

Kevin B.

Yelp
Ordered a large pickup order and was disappointed with the quality. The corned beef was very fatty.

Jim W.

Yelp
I guess they had my last review removed.. stay away from this place.. they are now doing curbside orders. They are coming out to your car to deliver your order, which is great, but they aren't changing their gloves or aprons after they come outside to deliver your order. They go right back behind the customer , wearing the same gloves and apron, grabbing food and preparing the next order. They don't care about your health. The one cashier was outside smoking with her gloves on, right outside the front door, goes back in to behind the register, never washes her hands or changes her gloves, and proceeds to pack and ring up the next order. WOW!!! For an sandwich and pop at 17 dollars, you would think you would be treated like royalityz but you are treated like trash. Ever since Harry Left, Sid and his 2 grand daughters have ran the historic place to the ground. I mean just look at the cheap corned beef he uses now. And his one grand daughter is a vegan, how can she know how things taste and what's good... Stage Deli here I come

Irwin F.

Yelp
It was total "meh". Just a sandwich. The service was blah. I wasn't even thanked for my business and I spent over $100! $14 for a deli sandwich!? C'mon. I can make one from Kroger for $3. I won't go back. Bronx Deli blows this place out of the water. Service, food, price and all.

Urayna N.

Yelp
42 minutes agoNEW This place used to be a great deli in Southfield. As of today, I will no longer patronize them as they were beyond rude to me from placing my order to cashing out. As I approached the cashier to pay, I pulled my mask slightly away from my mouth to speak to the lady thru the glass while still covered and she started yelling " PLEASE KEEP YOUR MASK ON". It would have been something I just ignored until another woman decided to chime it with unnecessary comments saying"yeah these people don't get it...its not hard just keep it on". After that I had enough! My dollar is helping you all stay open in these times and I refuse to be treated badly. Especially when your food isn't as good as it used to be. Keep it up and you'll be closed this time next year!

David A.

Yelp
After 31 years of Coming to Star Deli. I am finally through. You lost a Lifetime customer. I will never recommend you, or eat your food ever again. What happened to this American Town.

Moira W.

Yelp
I had the "special" which was corned beef, and it was so grey and unappetizing. Plus the vinegar smell was so awful. I heard this place was better than breadbasket, but, they were awful, and it was $20 for one sandwich.

Akira D.

Yelp
Only 4 stars because some of the prices seem so high! But this is an internationally known restaurant. It has the connivence of a corner store and some unique emu items. I spoke with shirah, I think, and she was amazing! She took my order and my food was ready when I got there. They have phone ahead orders or you can just wait in your car and they will bring it out to you! The bagels are large and fresh. The cream cheese is name brand. The lox are what generations of my family has come back for time and time again. This place has a rich history with Detroiters.
