Amazing place to eat the service is amazing. The menu offers a wide variety of options. The food, drinks are absolutely incredible. Everyone's who works here are very nice and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Delicious stir fry and parang curry. The Thai iced tea is addictive so beware! Well definitely return for more of this authentically prepared Thai food and happy service!

I ordered pad kee mao spicy and it came with a very small amount of spicy sauce, some of the noodles weren’t evenly coated with the sauce, and the chicken was extremely dry. I also ordered the deluxe Thai ice tea, it was given to me as the tea alone with a small separate coffee mate creamer - not enough for the typical ratio of Thai iced tea. It would be good to add real creamer to this product. Food isn’t awful but it’s really not worth the price.

Why you change the light?! It was great with warm spot light. Now it is cold bright cheap led light. Why?! Why?!

Horrible experience here. Server did not check up on us and it wasnt even busy. The food was plain with no flavor. Did not taste good. I got the shrimp wonton soup and it was SO water down. I do NOT recommend to anyone who loves Thai food. Thai food is suppose to be flavorful.

I had an amazing experience at Star of Siam! The red snapper was absolutely delicious—crispy, full of flavor, and beautifully prepared. The appetizers were amazing, and my piña colada was refreshing and perfectly made. Our whole table loved the food and drinks, and the staff was so friendly and attentive. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!

Pretty bad overall. Ordered Fresh Spring Rolls - which was smothered in sticky plum sauce, way too much sauce, and too sweet. Gyoza - was just like the ones I cook myself from Trader Joe. String beans with tofu - paid extra for the tofu, extra for white rice ($2.50 for a small white rice?), but the beans were ok. Very weird: I ordered a vodka ginger and they put one shot of vodka in a tall soda cup and filled the rest with ginger ale (not a cocktail in any sense), and they charged me $14 for this terrible drink. I used to eat there years ago and my memory was that the food was much better. I cook much better at home.

I enjoyed every bite of the chicken satay and noodles at the Taste of Chicago '24. Great tasting food, courteous staff and surprisingly filling. A great value for the prices and serving sizes! Dee-licious!

Truly excellent This Thai restaurant does not disappoint! Great atmosphere. Easy access up a few stairs. Super efficient and friendly service. The Fresh Vietnamese Spring Rolls were good. The dipping sauce was really good. The Panang Nue, a house special curry with beef was simply phenomenal!! Certainly the star of the show!! I was in the fence and the host suggested it. Wow!! Not your average curry. Creamy and a little spicy. LOVED IT!!

We stayed right down the street and I'm always a sucker for Thai food, so we decided to order in one night. I looked online and they have a full menu and website to place orders. We lucked into a 10% discount for new customers when placing an order. I chose to pay with cash and immediately after placing an order received a email that food would be ready in 2 minutes, what?!? I headed down the street to pick up our food. I noticed the restaurant offers parking for a small charge. You walk up a few steps into a small simple restaurant. The staff were friendly and I was greeted immediately. After I paid, I sat down to wait but it only took a few minutes before they handed me my order! We ordered the crab Rangoon, chicken satay, and Thai fried rice with chicken. The food was hot and fresh. For us, the best part of the meal was the appetizers. The crab Rangoon was fried to perfection and were shaped like small egg rolls with a knot at the end. Not too creamy, but flavored well. The chicken satay was okay, but the sauce was the real winner, I could dip just about anything into the creamy curry sauce. Finally, the Thai fried rice was a let down, didn't taste Thai at all. Just plain fried rice. My kids liked it but wouldn't recommend if you're looking for Thai flavors. Overall it was a quick meal just down the street, but I wouldn't go out of my way to dine there.

I had been going to this restaurant since the 90s but had not been there recently and I don't intend to return. The owner does not pay his waitpersons even a minimum wage. They workers are solely paid by tips and you are handed a document upon being seated that explains that 20% will be automatically added to your bill- not for a group of six but for one diner. I like to think that I tip well but I don't think that I should be commanded to pay because the owner wont pay his workers who go back and forth to Thailand. Beyond that, the food was barely decent, and served in an area that needs an update. A better choice is Krung Thep where workers, servers and customers are equally respected. They should just rename it Siam because this restaurant deserves no stars

Star of Siam Restaurant has been here for ages and is a well known Thai food standby by both locals and area employers (catering). We started with Gyo Tod (fried wontons) which were unique as you usually don't see shrimp wontons on Thai menus! They were served with in-house made plum sauce and were generously filled. Very good delicious starter to dinner. We ordered Pad Ruam Mit (mixed vegetables) with chicken although you can have tofu or other meat choices. Also, Panang Nue (beef curry) which didn't disappoint. Huge amount of beef in the rich flavorful curry! Both dishes offered generous amounts of tender meat and vibrant flavors. Notables: 1. If you like your dish spicy hot then you need to tell the server or you'll get your dish served flat tasting (in my opinion). 2. Jasmin rice is extra and doesn't come with your meal but the food was really good quality and generously portioned so it wasn't a big deal. Restaurant was clean, service was excellent and friendly. Tables and booths are very roomy.

Amazing Thai downtown!!! We came here after visiting a friend that just moved downtown and it blew our group's expectations out of the water. The food was fresh and had so much flavor. The service was quick and the price is amazing for the huge portion of food you get. I didn't get to check out the cool eating area downstairs but the ambiance feels authentic too! Some of the better Thai we have had in the city

Eddie is such a character, he takes care of his customers well!! The staff were very friendly and the food came out quickly. The portions are good and shareable. Out of everything, i think their tamarind sauce was so so so good. The spice level was low for us (we were all mexican) but it was perfect for the dish. Didn't get to take a picture of the food because we devoured it but we got to take a picture with Eddie so that was cool!

This place is either a huge hit or a huge miss to be honest... The two times I dined in it was absolutely delicious, one of my favorite casual pad see ew spots in the city! But I got takeout once and the quality was so so much worse. And on top of that I tried the pad Thai and it was so bad, nothing but lemon/sour flavor I couldn't even finish it. If I had one recommendation it would be to go dine in instead of getting takeout.

We started with gyoza which weren't bad but a little soft even though they were fried. For my main, I got the pad khee mao hot. The portion size was good but everything else wasn't. The chicken was over cooked and while the shrimp was tasty, I only got two small ones. The noodles were cooked fine but lacked flavor. Finally, for being an already spicy dish and then asking for extra spice, I didn't taste any spice. My nose didn't run and I didn't have to drink any water once. Overall, I find Thai food hard to mess up but this seemed to find a way.

Very fast service, with very delicious food and dedicated staff and owners! The ambiance was great with a geek of home grown ingredients.

I've ordered here many times for work lunches. I get stuck in a rut of ordering the one dish I like which is the Kang Karee Kai - yellow potato curry with chicken. It's usually pleasantly sweet, creamy and flavorful, but this last time I ordered it, it was very greasy. I could see red grease floating all over it, and it was too spicy, despite the description saying mild. I'll have to remember next time to specifically ask for mild. I really hate that the rice is an extra charge. Who is going to eat curry without rice?? But I guess it plays a trick on your mind so you don't immediately balk at ordering $20 curry. This time I got appetizers and I'll just say the appetizers are NOT worth it. The gyoza are ok, but nothing to write home about. Not worth the nearly $10. The Vietnamese spring rolls are made with imitation crab and cut into bite size pieces which was novel, but they were seriously lacking in flavor and the texture was just wrong. The rice paper was too hard and there was no noodles to give it the springy texture I expect from a spring roll! The peanut sauce also fell flat and I was disappointed that they squirted Sriracha in it. My friend ordered the cashew chicken and it was flavorful, I loved the mushrooms in it but personally I'd love this dish without the actual cashews and without the red peppers. Not something I'd go out of my way to order personally, just due to ingredient preference but the flavor was enjoyable. Although I did carry out, I noticed the ambiance here has really changed. Prepandemic it used to be on the casual side of fancy, but they have done some sort of construction that walled off half the dining area and now it's a big ugly white wall when you walk in. Totally throws off the vibe and makes you wonder why you paid almost $60 for two to carry out.

Red curry was pretty good, would reccomend! but the basil chicken didn't have any flavor to it honestly. Green curry was average. Little bland.

I gave this place a try for the first time for take-out. I called in a phone order and got the green curry with beef and a pad see ew with tofu. I was not sure what to expect since this was spot was convenient to get food while I was running some errands in the area. I browsed their menu online and calling in the food order was easy. For two dishes, the wait was 20 minutes during the dinner rush, which wasn't bad as I went browsing at the afterwords bookstore just down the street. The food was alright. It hit the spot for my Thai food craving and they had great portion sizes, but it left a lot to be desired. Perhaps it was just the items I ordered, or it was an off day and I need to come back to order a variety of things... but I'll give it another chance in the future when my Thai food craving hits again. PAD SEE EW WITH TOFU: I loved the portion size. This container was hefty my and lasted me 3 meals. I prefer the noodles to be saucier and sweeter, so maybe next time l will ask for extra sauce on the side or skip this to try the pad thai. The gai lan (green veggies) that were stir-fried with the noodles were extremely over cooked and didn't match the cooking of the noodles. The stalks nearly melted when you bit into them (gloopy) instead of that crunchy al dente bite...I ended up separating these from my plate. GREEN CURRY WITH BEEF: Again the portions were super generous and they add a ton of beef. Their curry was delicious and flavorful; it also had some green peppers, eggplants, and basil. The one tweak I'd make is to order any the curries with extra vegetables. I'd skip the beef next time or try the chicken. TL;DR I'm glad I tried Star or Siam! I can only speak to my one take-out experience so dining in might be different (better with fresher food?). It will hit the spot when you're in a pinch for a quick Thai dinner in River North, but it wouldn't be my first choice (at least not yet). Looking forward to a redemption (second try) meal to see if I'd change my mind.

Star of Siam is of one of my Thai food staples in the city and is my go-to for Thai takeout. I haven't dined in years, but had the pleasure of eating with friends recently. The restaurant has more of an open concept seating arrangement compared to the last time I visited, so you won't be able to be seated at a traditional Thai table like in the past. During my visit, I was reminded of how their food tastes even better when dining in. Our table ordered Tod Mun fish cakes, panang curry, and chicken pad see eiw. I paired our meal with a refreshing and smooth Thai tea. The delicious Tod Mun fish cakes were paired with a spicy, nutty cucumber salad. The Pad See Eiw was perfectly saucy and had the bouncy noodles that make this dish always stand out for me. The creamy panang curry was comforting and went nicely with a side of steamed rice. As always, Star of Siam delivered an incredible meal and I can't wait for my next visit!

For sure this is one of the best and longest running Chicago favorites of Thai cuisine. It may not look like much and may be appear old, which it is. Star Of Siam is where to go if wanting authentic Thai hot spices. Good food makes up for the generally dated atmosphere. There's lots of protein options including for meat eaters and vegetarians and big portions. A good location if staying or working around here. It's close to the Courtyard Chicago North. There's other close by hotels too. Big portions. These are quite a serious value. It's about $15 for an entree. There's the usual Thai favorites to choose from. Last time we got a few classics. The Pad Thai looked and tasted like you think it should. Choose the protein. I had tofu. Also got it without eggs. Good vegan or vegetarian item. There's not a whole lot of these. Cool layout with comfortable cushions you sit on instead of hard chairs. It's kind of outdated but has an old school coolness about it. The Pad Thai is the best item if looking for something to get for vegans and vegetarians.

The big bowl went out of business for sitdown dining. We tried this place. The Pad Thai had a lot of tofu -not much chicken. Didn't care for the mushy noodles. I would say that the service was excellent, however. Likely will not return.

I ordered a tofu pad thai (comes with not fried tofu), jasmine rice, and a vegetarian spicy eggplant dish which included onions and bell peppers. The pad thai wasn't doused in fish/tamarind sauce so the noodles were more whitish compared to what one typically finds at other Thai restaurants, which I appreciated, but the flavor was a bit bland. I wish the tofu came fried, as this may have added more flavor to the pad thai dish. I sprinkled on some hot red sauce that came packaged in the delivery, which lent the pad thai some much needed kick. I may try a meat dish if I order from this place again, but it was recommended by a foodie friend of mine, so all in all, while the food wasn't amazing, it was acceptable.

Arrived on a Tuesday evening during peak dinner time and was seated immediately. Ordered 1. Beef pad see ewe 2. Spicy beef skewers 3. Beef pad Thai (not pictured) The food overall was just okay. The noodle dishes were overcooked and under flavored. You can look at ither pad thai pics and see just how pale it is. Ironically, it had more flavor than the pad see ewe. Beef skewers were overcooked and tough to chew. The chef had come around earlier to try to get us to order papaya salad because he said the kitchen was backed up and didn't want us to wait. We declined, and honestly, the food we did order did not take long at all to come out, so don't feel pressured to order anything you don't want.

Red curry was excellent and service is great! I like the loft style of the restaurant and food came out so fast!

It was my second time to this place because it's having a lovely ambiance so since I was in the area I decide to have a fast late lunch. The the dumplings were good ,instead the soap was plain and the mango used for the desert with rice was having a bad texture black which means wasn't fresh cut and hard to eat. The service was not so satisfying,the girl that took care of us wasn't to happy to be at work.

craving thai food with my family in chicago so we decided to try out star of siam. all other restaurants were super crowded on saturday lunch so we were glad to see there was plenty of seating. interior is nice and well lit. service was friendly. however, food/flavor was definitely underwhelming for me. portions were big and prices were alright, a little steep for the quality. // chicken pad thai $13.25 // big portion with noodles, chicken, peanuts, etc. flavor was off for me for authentic pad thai. definitely really sweet and was missing that fish sauce flavor. // som tum (papaya salad) $13.25 // this was probably the best dish out of everything. good flavor but was missing a bit of kick that som tum usually has (acidity and spice) // pad kra-prao (fried spicy basil leaves with meat) // good portion of meat. however, wayyy too salty for us. we had to cut it with the rice and sweet noodles but was disappointing. // pla-duk pad ped (deep fried catfish) // smaller portion of fish. again, wayyy too salty for us. even with rice, it was difficult to eat. large jasmine rice for $3. overall, nice ambiance and service but food was too sweet or too salty for us and the flavors were not the most authentic. i personally would not revisit.

Great classic Thai place. The atmosphere felt very ~zen~. There are these weird but comfortable benches in the middle that made me want to sit cross cross or something, very cool. The service was great and the food came out SO quick - we were in and out in less than 45 min. After a long day of travel and walking, this was the perfect low maintenance dinner spot. We both got the pad se eiw - classic, can't go wrong. I appreciated the amount of broccoli they included in the dish. Plenty of food for leftovers too! I enjoyed this place for a casual, easy dinner.

Not a great place. I ordered chicken friend rice once and it was undercooked. The next time I dined there and service was very bad and it's super loud. There are better Thai places around.

Cozy, no frills Thai spot in river north. Every dish was super flavorful and came out quick (i mean within 10 minutes of ordering quick!) highly recommend if you're craving Thai in the neighborhood or need a new take out spot.

Epic just epic, Quick service, fresh, epic foods! Amazing meats perfectly cooked, sizes to share, gluten and vegan options. This place is amazing! Only thing that needs to be changed is the seating. Its hurts! Ouch*

This was one of the places that was opened late. The pad tai was no good, one of the worst that I tasted all these years. Soup was okay, curry was okay. Definitely would not be my first choice of restaurants.

Quick to get you seated and serve food. We always order Mussaman Curry and a vegetable dish like Spicy Eggplant when testing out a Thai place. Star of Siam was mediocre at best. The restaurant does not include rice per dish, the curry did NOT use coconut milk and the spicy eggplants were just spicy had no flavor and we're just consumed by the spice. Expected better for River North.

This restaurant was pretty close to our hotel. We did take-out for a quick dinner. Very nice atmosphere and décor layout inside. Menu was interesting. There were a mix of Japanese and Thai food. - Mixed tempura - not your usual Japanese style tempura. The breading was different. It was ok. But it was interesting that they had broccoli tempura. - Satay Chicken - the meat was a bit dry, and the flavor was ok. It came with peanut sauce. - Chicken pad thai - a bit disappointed with their pad thai. That's like my favorite thing to get at a Thai restaurant. The noodles were too soggy and the flavor wasn't there. They put a lot of sweet and chili sauce in it. Spicy and too sweet. Not a place I would go to for Thai food.

Super big restaurant with sweet servers and super fast service. We got the pad see yew, drunken noodles, and crab rangoons.

I'm honestly tired of restaurants like Star of Siam giving a bad name to Thai food. I was yet another patron who was excited after being sold by great reviews. I was highly disappointed when I took my first bite. I ordered the Pad Thai, which is one of their most popular options, and the noodles were so bad that I just decided to pick out the chicken about half way through and throw the rest of the dish out. The entire dish did not taste fresh, but rather felt like it was pre-prepared and microwaved. They included a lemon for me to use, but it wasn't needed. The dish already tasted like they squeezed a couple lemons in it. I simply wasted money today. Your mileage may vary.

Not the best Thai food I've had and the service was slow. We had a large group and the check came out on a sheet of paper with illegible writing and only some of the dishes had prices. The portions were large but not worth the saving.

Excellent food! They use higher quality beef than many other Thai restaurants in Chicago. I wish they could make their curry spicier. Overall I would definitely recommend Star of Siam

Extremely friendly service! We stopped in for take out on the way back from a long day to our hotel and were treated like family. There's a reason this place has been in business so long, it's because they are a master of their craft when it comes to great Thai food and customer service. We would eat here every time we are in town! The pad Thai is phenomenal and they truly greet and treat you like family. The restaurant looked very casual and comfortable, all in all a great experience with even greater people.

Wandered into this restaurant on Christmas when looking for a place that was open for lunch. I am SOOOO glad we did. Our server was SO friendly and the service was fantastic. But the food? Woooowwww! Hot, fresh, and the flavors were out of this world! We ordered crab Rangoon, chicken satay with peanut sauce, beef fried rice, and the massaman curry. Everything was on point. The curry was DELICIOUS and had so many layers of flavor! I also ordered the lychee martini and it was fantastic. Portions were large. Diverse in staff & customers. No complaints whatsoever. Easy 5 stars. GO THERE!

This is the OG Thai restaurant in the city. I have been here many times and a high school friend ask me to meet her there. First time here since I moved away from Chicago almost 20 years ago. It is very nicely updated. Best part? Park in front, call the restaurant, a nice old man will come out and valet your car for $8. On to the food. The deep fried pointy stick was good . Forgot the name. My main course was string beans with shrimp, it was delicious. Overall a good place to eat if you are in the neighborhood.

Great food. Service needs a hit of improvement. Authentic food, masaman curry is not sweet at all, it was good that way! Crab ragoons were the best I've ever had in my life!

This Thai restaurant in DT Chicago was appealing not only bc it was walking distance from the hotel, but also bc the decor was open and pretty nice. I wanted to try the Pad Khee Mao and the Spicy Eggplant but the lady advised me that that would be too much for 1 person to eat so I skipped the eggplant and just added the Tom Yum soup. The Tom Yum soup was loaded with balls of mushrooms so if you're a fungus lover then these soup buoys are perfect for you. I fished all 10 of these guys out before I was able to sample my soup with the flat spoon they provided me. It took 933 scoops to finish this bowl not because there was so much soup but bc they didn't provide me with the traditional asian spoon. Why would a Thai place provide a flat metal spoon to drink soup is beyond me and trying to flag down the waitress was not possible as there was only 2 ppl to serve the entire restaurant. The Pad Khee Mao came out and it was kinda sweet with no spiciness at all unlike what Thai food should taste like. There was very little noodle and quite disappointing tbh. The waitress was nice enough to offer me the Spicy Eggplant as a replacement which was better bc it was loaded with basil and shrimp but not impressive. I felt the food was blah, service was blah, setting was good, but I did appreciate the lady replacing my dish with my alternative. Other than dropping off food, you'll never see the service staff again. I even sat there for a long time before I waved my hands up in the air like I was landing a plane so I could get my check. Don't come here if you have less than an hr to eat.

Got this for takeout I got the green curry, which was really good and pretty big portion size. It had the perfect amount of spice but might be on the spicier side. If you don't deal with spice well inside of the place itself isn't so great but for takeout, it is the perfect option. I ordered my food and it was ready within 10 minutes, but definitely come back for a quick takeout.

SERVICE: 8/10 Food was delivered quickly, and it was well packaged with utensils included. FOOD: 9/10 Pad Thai - 9/10 - The best judge of a Thai restaurant or any restaurant for that matter is the most basic dish that would be expected. For a Thai restaurant, in my opinion, that measuring stick should be none other than Pad Thai. Star of Siam's Pad Thai is definitely a 'star.' It's different than other pad thai that I have had, having stronger tamarind flavor that is more in line with classic traditional recipes, and for that, I found it quite good. VALUE: 8/10 Relatively affordable prices for what you get. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 9/10 I would definitely come back here even if just for their pad thai. They have a good unique pad thai that I recall even long after that I ate it. It stands out amongst the many Thai restaurants I have eaten at. TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: Try their pad thai. OVERALL: 9/10

The portions are large at least but the food is not good & service was almost comically bad. The pad thai did not taste fresh, was lukewarm, and way too sweet. Unfortunately, it's the only vegetarian main dish on the menu. The side of green beans was not very special. The seating is cool in that you sit on these cushions on a wraparound bench so you can sit cross legged or normally. There was an extremely narrow pathway next to our table and there were constantly people squeezing past right up against our food. There are only enough sauces for a third of the tables so halfway through our dinner, the sever took away the sauces for another table. Also, they were constantly trying to clear our dishes even though we were clearly not done.

I hate to do this because we've been coming here for 5+ years on at least a monthly basis, but the food quality has been consistently changing, and not for the better. For context, we get the same thing every 2-3 weeks: the Krab Rangoon (excellent + a lot of them) and the Chicken Pad Thai (the concern). This was not the restaurant's choice, but the atmosphere had drastically changed to feel more like your standard cold chain restaurant when it used to have this dark, moody, comfortable vibe with carpets and sunken seating. They had to change the floors/seating due to building requirements :( .. But the biggest disappointment has been the Chicken Pad Thai that used to be our regular Friday comfort meal. They've changed the noodles, flavor, and chicken a few times over the last 4-5 years, but the chicken we got last week was terrible, and we couldn't eat our meals. It's now like some frozen-looking chicken chunks that are hard and almost processed-looking/tasting. The owners are super nice and always there, so we called to see about a refund/replacement, but since we did Doordash delivery, they said we would have to do a refund through that.. understandable, but then Doordash now requires a photo of the food for a refund request and still declined our refund. Very unfortunate scenario, and we'll likely not be coming back as we've now been let down too many times. Will miss you, OG Star of Siam.

Great take out Thai place in Hyde Park! Mostly great dishes and always friendly service and delivery.

Good service and fresh food. So yummy! We are in Chicago every July and hope we can return next year.

Ordered delivery - Pad Thai was not what I expected - very light sauce and super sweet/citrusy. Not bad, just unexpected. Egg rolls tasted a little burnt, but I ate them anyway. Super quick delivery and I had lots of leftovers, which I enjoyed. Not sure if I would visit again - perhaps the descriptions of the entrees are better noted on the in-house menu.

This place has been a staple in the area and has outlasted many of the establishments that have come and gone in River North. The Thai food here is authentic and has a variety of choices that span the countries delicacies. You have your typical noodle dishes like pad Thai and pad see ew to the curry based selection of entrees. Then you have the variety of soups from Tom kha which is coconut based to tom yum, the list goes on and on. The location isn't the greatest as it's located on the lower part off Illinois St and really no establishments around it so I'm surprised that it's been able to out last it's competitors in the area (Vongs Thai Kitchen to name one). It must be the consistent delicious dishes they continue to make year after year that keeps them going. The portions are large so expect to have leftovers when you order. You definitely will be paying for that portion accordingly though but sure least you know you're getting your money's worth.

So disappointing. Ordered Pad See Ew with chicken to go. Chicken is inedible and the noodles are overcooked with zero flavor. There are a few tiny bites of overcooked veg - tasteless. Blech.

The Nam Sod is amazing, consistently great! Satay, all day! Delivery is faster than expected.
