My daughter & I wanted to go to Eddie's Ice Cream Shop & to find a place nearby to have dinner. we walked around Metropolitan Avenue looking @ all the amazing restaurants - so much to choose from! We decided to go to Star of Siam because a) we love Thai food & b) we knew we could trust them because they had an A rating in the window from the Dept. of Health.
Upon walking in, the restaurant is semi large with several tables, there were 2 other tables with people eating. The decor is appropriate-a large mural of a scene depicting Thai gods, a large mobile with birds nests in the middle of the room, a large floral display along one wall, and a couple of lanterns hanging from the ceiling. The original wood floor & brick wall were nice touches.
We were greeted & sat down. My daughter caught a glimpse of an older Thai woman in the kitchen & we immediately knew we were in for a delicious meal. They didn't disappoint. The menu contained many usual dishes, but some unusual ones too. We got Thai iced tea (one with bubbles)--OMG no lie--this was the absolute best Thai iced tea I have ever had. We then got Thai dumplings to start--little pillows of deliciousness topped with crunchy - I couldn't identify the crunchy, but it & the sauce completed the dumplings. My daughter got Tamarind Duck--when it arrived it was so pretty she didn't want to eat it. The duck was so tender, with a very crispy skin & was very balanced in flavor. I got pan seared salmon in green curry. Again, when my dish came it was so pretty I didn't want to eat it. The salmon was perfectly seared, the green curry was a bounty of flavors with bamboo shoots, peas & perfectly cooked fresh broccoli. We ate every bit of our meals-although I could not finish the curry sauce. I should have brought it home. The cutest part--the rice is a star shape on the plate--for Star of Siam.
Considering what we got, the prices were reasonable. They do tack on 4% if you pay with a card, but the convenience is worth it. A delcious salmon dinner with appetizer & drink for $45 total, including tax, tip, & convenience fee, is a bargain in NYC. The only people we saw getting food were the 2 other tables, us & a delivery driver walked in as we were leaving. A hidden gem, run, don't walk to check them out. My daughter took all the photos--I was too busy admiring/enjoying the food!
