Best Affordable Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Head to this strip mall spot for Taiwanese cuisine that doesn’t break the bank and can easily feed a family of four (with dessert) for under $40. Start off with an order of chicken nuggets before moving on to the fried pork chop, complete with rice, bok choy, pickled veggies, and egg. Beat the Texas heat with one of its shaved ice desserts, which come with traditional toppings of red bean, rainbow, black, and almond jellies for a cool $7." - Brianna Griff

Good food, reasonable price, food was fresh and the drinks were tasty. The desserts are also great- all around treats.

Google
A great spot for juices. Food is ok some option need more flavor. Customer service is great. Place is old. Bathroom is clean enough.3 juices with adding options (bobabn etc) total is $15 after tax.

We've had dinner here in the past and the food was great. You can order on a tablet or in person. Place is busy but moves fast. We came back for dessert this time and it didn't disappoint. We had the mango and the strawberry shaved ice with fresh fruit toppings on both. Very delicious and would recommend to others.

Justin

Google
Terrible experience with the manager, who was yelling at customers. To make matters worse, our food had some unidentifiable and disgusting bits. Avoid this place and try one of the many other options in the plaza that offer better food and service

Google
This is the third time I have come to eat here and the experience is always great. Delicious food at a fairly cheap price makes me very satisfied, but the service here is probably like most will be self -admiration if you want the spoon or fork, but it will still have the servers to give your meal. I always order a beverage when I come here since it was very good. Will return many times.

Google
The price is affordable, the beef tendon noodle is very Taiwan flavor, the point is that it's too big to finish 😂😂😂😂 Business is good, the assembly line is very business minded.

Google
Come early and with the knowledge of what you want to order. There’s only one touch screen ordering screen and the line can be long. Orders come out quickly. Spicy chicken nuggets were good and was my favorite overall. Fried pork chop was okay. Noodles were kind of bland. Wonton noodles and soup was okay. Both beef and beef tendon noodles were also okay. There’s nothing bad or great about the dishes here. What you do get is great value food because the portions are large for what you pay. For this reason it’s a popular place for people to come eat here. If you don’t want to spend much but want a filling meal for a great price, this is the place to go.

Setha Ponce

Google
We got the mango shaved ice which was delicious. We ordered on the screen and had minimal interaction with the staff. This place was VERY busy. Too many people for my taste but it was 8pm on a Saturday. Shaved ice was fresh along with all the fruit.

Yelp
Star Snow Ice is a beloved establishment for many of us that frequent Chinatown. After nearly two decades, this Taiwanese cafe continues to provide a comforting, homey vibe among the newer, flashier shops of the Dun Huang Plaza. The storefront is somewhat hidden with plain signage on a brick wall corner, but their food and drinks speak much louder. Your money goes a long way here. This cafe's old-fashioned atmosphere doesn't only show through its menu and interior layout; the prices reflect it too. $9.75 for beef noodle soup and $5.50 for spicy chicken nuggets -- both served with impressive portions -- feels unheard of in today's economy. It blows me away that at the same time, their tastes match the standard of something you'd expect at a more contemporary Asian restaurant. I've loved their strawberry smoothie with tapioca ever since my first visit as an elementary school kid. I can't tell if it's because of their fruit selection or whether it's purely nostalgic, but I get it every time. 25-50% sweetness works just fine for those that want to hold back on the sugar. Orders have a $5 card minimum, Amex and Discover not accepted. I highly encourage ditching credit cards altogether and showing your support with cash instead. For the low menu prices and incredible value that this cafe provides us, the last thing they need are card companies taking a cut of their revenue like vultures. As time passes, Star Snow Ice feels more and more like a hidden gem. I hope they're able to continue this level of service and delicious food for as long as they wish.

Yelp
This local place has been my family's favorite for many years now. The food is consistently delicious and filling. Our go to's are the chicken nugget plate and beef noodle soup. Service was fast and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality and portions you get. Even during winter storms or power outages in Houston, Star Snow is reliably open. The team works so hard! Whether you're craving a hearty meal or a cool, sweet treat, Star Snow Ice & Teriyaki hits the spot. Go check it out next time you're in Chinatown Dun Huang Plaza.

Yelp
#1 Taiwanese Restaurant in Houston!!! Love LOVEEEE the Chicken Fried Steak with rice. It is a huge piece of chicken cutlet, perfectly fried and lightly dressed with a sweet sauce. Also includes white rice, ground pork and veggies & 2 pieces of fried tofu. YOU WILL BE SO FULL after. Probably can split it up into 2 meals tbh. But a MUST GET item. Drinks, i love the watermelon juice with boba. Very refreshing. Also the Lemon Ai-Yu with jelly is really tarte and fresh as well. Plenty of seating inside. You can also call in and order ahead of time for pick-up/to-go. They are also known for their beef noodle soup as well. Parking - within the cafe 101 plaza

Yelp
A homey and casual spot! The portions are pretty big and dense, and the price is so reasonable. It gets busy during the weekends, and the restaurant is small, but still worth waiting a little if you're looking to eat more homemade style food. Only downside is they seem to keep taking orders even when it's crowded with no seating, so you might get your meal and not have a spot to eat.

Yelp
For my first time here, I was impressed by their extensive menu. They have both food and bubble tea available and do both well. Most places either do food or drinks well, but finding a business that does both is uncommon. P2 ordered the Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken, and I opted for their Dumpling Soup. P2 also went for their honeydew smoothie with boba, and I wanted to try their watermelon juice. When our food came out, it was hot and fresh. The popcorn chicken was perfectly prepared and tasty, and the dumpling soup was hot but incredibly delicious. Our drinks were also terrific! We elected for our drinks to be made with less sugar, but they still tasted great. The boba had a good chewy consistency, neither too chewy nor hard. We went on Christmas Day, and it wasn't too busy. However, the workers seemed understandably unhappy about working on a holiday and didn't seem friendly. The service was good, and we felt cared for. The tables are small here, and finding a place to sit can be challenging. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for large groups, but it is perfect for 1-2 people.

Yelp
Food - fast casual cheap yummy! Personally recommend their rice dishes and the deep fried chicken and pork etc. got the beef noodle soup and I think the noodle and the soup overall isn't as good and flavorful as it can be - it's 3/5 beef noodle soup. Definitely get their fresh juice though! My favorite is pineapple kiwi Service - nice fast Ambiance - casual

Yelp
A hidden gem in Houston Chinatown for good, affordable eats with huge portions! The vibe is super casual and the food comes out really quick They have everything from fried snacks to shaved ice desserts, but my go-to is the fried chicken rice. It comes with a massive, crispy, and flavorful piece of chicken over rice and fresh veggies. Their shaved ice is also amazing. I recommend the green tea flavored one since its slightly bitter and not too sweet! Every time I come and visit Houston, this is a place I have to come back to at least twice XD

Yelp
Our local friends took us to check out Chinatown and we end up having dinner here. If you are familiar to SGV, this definitely gives the Shau Mei vibe. You ordered at a kiosk and grab a number and a table. The workers will promptly bring out your food. Utensils, water, take-out boxes are also self-serve which I thought was very efficient. The highly recommended pork chop rice is massive! However hubby has no problem finishing the whole plate. I got the noodle soup which feels very comforting and home-y. I couldn't finish the noodles because it was such generous portion. Price is very reasonable and affordable. The watermelon smoothie was refreshing and we had a great meal!

Yelp
This Chinatown restaurant is known for their large portions at good prices. The prices have definitely gone up while the portions have gotten smaller because it was ~$11 for the spicy chicken nugget dish, and it used to be $8 not long ago. This is still a great price, of course. It was so busy when we came here at lunchtime, but we were able to find seating at a small table. There was a lengthy line to order at the kiosk. My friend and I both ordered the spicy chicken nugget dish, which was his recommendation. The name is pretty funny, but it's basically popcorn chicken. The chicken was unfortunately very dry, but my friend said it was worse than usual. He normally likes it. I feel like a little bit of sauce would help the flavour a lot. I was hoping there would be more vegetables as there was just a small piece of bok choy. The portion was huge, and neither of us could finish our food. Something bizarre was that my friend's dish had an absurd number of jalapenos. You can't tell from the picture because they were underneath, but there were SO many jalapenos. I only had one partial piece (which was good for me). I think they may have cooked ours together and forgotten to separate the peppers. Luckily neither of our dishes were very spicy.

Yelp
I usually come here for a snack but I decided to get some drinks I haven't tried before. (FYI: they have great popcorn chicken and fried squid) The watermelon juice was 5/5, perfect if you're looking for something light and refreshing. As for the taro tapioca, I'd give it a 3/5. I'm not sure if they use taro powder or real taro, but I will say it has an authentic taro flavor. What ended up turning me away was the consistency, a bit too thick for my liking. Regardless, I can see myself coming back to try some of their other fresh juices!

Yelp
I've only recently discovered this place since my father in law asked to hang out here, but man this place is awesome, AWESOME bang for buck. You'll be shocked how far $20 will get you here. There are a plethora of discounted add-ons, like ordering fresh, flat, wide rice noodles for a couple bucks that you can easily sauce up at home for optimum mouthfeel. As for the ambience. It's a bustling restaurant that can be moderately loud with mismatched furniture meant to maximize the amount of seating they can. The basil fried chicken (fried steak) on rice is one of my favorite sets. Their calamari is also quite good. Drinks and desserts are, as expected, reasonably priced, as well. Especially being freshly squeezed--yes, FRESHLY SQUEEZED. Thanks for being one of my guilty pleasures, Star Snow Ice.
google avatar

Yelp
Very casual, affordable Chinatown spot with home-y comfort foods! I got the popcorn chicken that was wonderfully crispy and on the more peppery spice end. The bean curd seaweed had slight hints of ginger that was also nice and refreshing. The beef noodle tendon soup was amazing and would def recommend this noodle dish. The pork chop was MASSIVE and was such a great deal. Overall will 100% be back. Caveat was it was super warm in there when I went as there is barely any AC inside and just fans. Do take out if you're sensitive to heat. Everything is self serve here so you grab your own take out boxes if you want any after you fine in. They'll only deliver food to your table!

Yelp
I have heard from multiple people that the popcorn chicken from star snow and ice is pretty good for a good value meal. This is a Taiwanese establishment in Chinatown that serves Taiwanese dishes and fresh juices. I got their spicy chicken nuggets. It is listed as an appetizer but it's the size of a meal, for only $5.50 too. They have a machine and loudspeaker that displays which orders are ready, but they brought my order to my table. The chicken has a perfect crisp with a juicy and tender interior. They are salt and pepper flavored, simple yet delicious. I love eating the basil too because they have all of the seasoning on them. I would just advise to bring a toothpick for after

Yelp
So this is the kind of place you visit TWICE For the perfect smoothies and amazing PRICE One visit per day won't SUFFICE Any more than I'm able to be CONCISE So forget sushi or a pizza SLICE Let me give you sound ADVICE If you think that Chinese and a smoothie sound NICE Get yourself down to STAR SNOW ICE WHAT Some of the best value low budget food and drinks in Texas. Certainly the best deal in Chinatown. You can get hearty snacks for 6 or 7 dollars, and you can get big, filling meals for 9 or 10. So many varieties of noodles, fried dishes, coastal Chinese, Taiwanese style, rice dishes, you name it. The highlight of the menu are the 4 dollar fruit smoothies, which are made using real fruit in a blender, and taste like it, too. Pineapple Blueberry is a highlight, as are Orange Mango or Mango Pineapple and so on. You really can't go wrong with these amazing drinks. The servers are my friends, including some cute and adorable Latina girls who get along well with Barbi and I. They are open until 10 every night, and don't mind serving late. They are one of the longest surviving places in Chinatown, and have been here for, much like the music artist, years and years. Their prices have stayed low, their food has stayed consistent and generous, and their smoothies have stayed amazing. We don't like their bubble tea or tapioca, but you can try it for yourself. There is another location of Star across the street less than half a mile away, if this one is too busy for you. The standout dishes are probably the Udon with Fried Fish, or really any of their meal dishes. All delicious and enormous. But the smoothies are the main reason we keep coming back. And thank you to Mike, who was the owner of the amazing Presotea nearby, which we miss, who first insisted we try this place, and he was right. I snuck into this place cause they left the door AJAR The glass almost hit me, could have left a SCAR The decor was basic, not like a RENOIR The counter was a long one and stretched quite FAR So I sat in the corner, playing GUITAR And like OMC, the cashier said "HOW BIZARRE" When it was time to leave I said AU REVOIR And told everyone about the smoothie at STAR From the sands of Morocco and the Marrakesh BAZAAR To the bloated billionaires playing Golf at MAR (A LAGO) Who are so in bed with Russia you can call them TSAR And betting 1 mil they can stay under PAR While Karen McDougal drives the little golf CAR And like most of Donald's girls, used to be an adult STAR But from Africa to Florida, wherever you ARE You won't get smoothies than here at STAR So you wanna eat more White Castle than KUMAR Talk more politics than BILL MAHER Write better novels than JOHN LE CARRE Bribe more FIFAs than QATAR Be a famous drummer like RINGO STARR Then sit around, get high, playing SITAR And yell at Fox E like Kareem JABAR Well first you better go get a smoothie from STAR So if the Premier League is still corrupt with VAR And if it looks wrong to film L.A. in NOIR For the best fruit smoothies than I've had so FAR Come and get food and smoothies from STAR! Yelp
The perfect spot for quick bites and drinks. Whenever I get a hankering for some taiwanese popcorn chicken and I am in the bellaire area I'll make a stop here. Food is dependable, crispy, and flavorful . Staff is efficient and quick. As pictured we ordered the popcorn chicken rice plate, fried dumplings, fried squid, and spicy chicken rice plate. Everything was pretty good.

Yelp
I wish we had this kind of a place where I live. I arrived in Houston late-ish, so decided to come here and ordered to go. I was kinda hungry at that point, so I ordered the pork chop meal and chicken nuggets appetizer. Given the prices, I thought I'd still be hungry after. Oh how wrong I was! The pork chop was as big as my face!! And the nuggets were equally generous. The pork chop meal also came with veggies and egg. I dunno if I was just hungry or what, but I remember food being very tasty too! It was definitely a good meal (and a half or honestly you can make it two meals). I did come back the next day and ordered one of their drinks and shaved ice. Their drink was not bad, but I will probably come back more for their food and shaved ice. The place does get crowded, so finding a table can be a bit challenging in peak hours, but I'll definitely come back whenever I'm in Houston!!
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
I used to come here a lot as a kid but the last two visits were total doozies. The lady at the front desk who takes orders is pretty short and rude. And today was the last straw when I saw a live roach on their display right next to all their toppings. We had to leave right away. Do not recommend- they've really fallen short in terms of service and food quality.
google avatar

Isabella L.

Yelp
Star snow ice has always been fire, and literally reminds me of my childhood. I've been here many times it's honestly a classic Chinatown move. The ambience is very nostalgic and hasn't changed much. The food is always served quick but bc it's popular it can be hard to get a seat some times, just camp it out and u will get one loll. Affordable and delish, what else can you ask for.
google avatar

Jessie C.

Yelp
Such cheap n delicious comfort food in a dingy-run down unassuming looking cafe.. but like that's how u know you're about to eat the most amazing food Their popcorn chicken and popcorn tofu as well as the beef noodle soup r a must. U just can't go wrong with them You can either order through a screen machine thing or order at the counter The prices are so low (in this economy) and the food is well worth the price!
google avatar

Houston B.

Yelp
It is a great place to go for a quick lunch and smoothie drink. Like their authentic dishes. Service is good.
google avatar

Dorothy Z.

Yelp
Big portions and delicious food for a very cheap price. The fried chicken was SO good but the chicken to rice ratio was definitely off. Curry noodles and beef teriyaki were also very flavorful and overall good experience! Minimal customer service though and they were pretty busy so it took 45 mins for our food to come :(
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
I got the fried chicken cutlet came with the fried egg, pickled vegetables, fried tofu, and some ground meat ($10). I think the portion size is reasonable for the price. The chicken cutlet is crispy and it's pounded flat. I think the flavors are okay at this place. Though I did find myself using a lot of their chili oil! We went on Sunday lunch, and we had to wait around 15 minutes for our food to come out. The employees were nice. There is a self-serve kiosk where you can check out but you need a $10 minimum order to use a credit card.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
Love coming for their Taiwanese shaved ice! It's a great place to stop by for a quick dessert after lunch or dinner in china town. Their popcorn chicken are made fresh and always hot, delicious and perfectly seasoned.
google avatar

Belly G.

Yelp
I love Taiwanese chicken nuggets. Just love them. I usually would go to Tapioca House to get some Taiwanese chicken nuggets meal. You know? Rice, nuggets, and some veggies? However, over the year, I've noticed that the price at Tapioca House kept going up and the portion kept getting smaller. I knew that Star Snow Ice served Taiwanese chicken nuggets too but I'd always gone to Tapioca House because I like the flavor there better. However, during one fine day my sister and her family was visiting from Dallas and they stopped by Star Snow Ice and she had asked me if I wanted anything from the restaurant before they made their way to my place. I, of course, asked her to get me some chicken nuggets meal, which she obliged. When they had made their way to my place and gave me my meal. I was like, WHOA!!! THIS is a meal! That meal box was full!! Chicken, egg, rice, even a couple of tofu in the box. And when I started eating the meal, the flavor was a lot better than I'd remembered it. Now I had asked my sister to get me TWO meals because when I get my meal from Tapioca House, one meal was never enough. But after eating one meal from Star Snow Ice, I was stuffed. Sorry Tapioca House. I will miss you but unless you give me more food for the money, Star Snow Ice has my business now.

Yelp
Staple cheap eat spot in Chinatown. Although prices have gone up with inflation and management change (food and staff are mostly the same), it's still probably one of the best deals for delicious cheap eats. I have been coming here over 20+ years and my staple had always been the pork soy bean dried noodles. The fried chicken and pork here is also really good. If you order fried chicken/pork noodle soup. You get a big bowl of soup with noodles and a side plate with a big fried chicken or pork. This place is always filled with people but I have always been able to get a seat. Note: All their utensils are plastic or wooden chopstick. And they use styrofoam cups. They do provide brewed free tea.
google avatar

Danny L.

Yelp
The thai tea taste very watered down and flavorless. But... the beef tendon soup is delicious and fresh. Probably wouldn't recommend getting tea here, but the food is great. The place is very busy and hectic on the weekends. Sometimes it is definitely difficult to grab a table, especially if you have a bigger group. The service is average. You pick up your drink orders yourself and if you order food they will deliver it to your table.
google avatar

Emma P.

Yelp
The popcorn chicken was amazingly seasoned well, and it came out pretty quick. There was a lot of people, which is pretty crowded. It was a bit loud with all the people talking, but the food was still very good.
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
A Houston staple; I used to come here during middle and high school to get a plate of spicy chicken nuggets and chicken teriyaki or shaved ice. While prices have almost doubled since then, it still remains packed, unpretentious about pleasing millennials. Interior can be packed and is usually very busy on weekends when self seating can be hard to come by. You order at the counter and food is brought to you. Not much ambiance to speak of besides Chinese TV blaring out in the background amid orders being called out. Again, value here is always 5/5 compared to peers nearby; you're coming here for tasty, cheap, and fast casual Taiwanese street food and they're consistent with the flavor over the years. Not a first date place but maybe a 10th date place.
google avatar

Ye J.

Yelp
A Houston staple, been open for as long as I could remember. Even with the couple price increases throughout the years, their price remained more than reasonable, and the place is always packed. Flavor and portion have stayed consistent, no surprises on what you will be getting. To name a few of my go-to: spicy fried tofu, spicy fried chicken nugget, fried pork chop miso noodles... and don't forget the fresh squeezed juice. Service is pretty minimal, order at the counter, grab utensils and condiments, find yourself a seat and they will bring out the food.
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
I've been going to star since I was a kid! This place always hits the spot & there's something for everyone. There's dry noodles, noodle soups, rice platters, boba drinks, shaved ice, etc. The food portion is great for the price you're paying. And probably one of the cheapest boba places in Bellaire! Their drinks are nothing as fancy as other boba spots in the area but the taste is always satisfying. Service is usually quick and everything is ordered at the front and you find a seat if dining in.
google avatar

Jonathan K.

Yelp
Prices are unbeatable. Portion sizes are large. Food is authentic Taiwanese cuisine. Almost smells like Taiwan inside too! The hustle and bustle reminds me of the streets, with lots going on, and workers yelling out numbers. Wonderful experience! Fried Pork Chop with Rice- The pork chop was all meat! Too many times, I've ordered this and get half a portion of bone. Crispy crust, and pairs extremely well with the bok choy, pickled veggies, egg, and braised meat that they give you. Definitely recommend this Taiwanese staple! Chicken Nuggets (popcorn chicken)- Overall good, worth the price, but won't be the best popcorn chicken in your life. It was slightly dry, but still worth it. Wish they had some more dedicated sauce for this, but we had to do with the soy sauce + black vinegar. Shaved Ice is literally $5 for a massive bowl. 4 toppings with essentials such as red bean, rainbow jelly, black jelly, and Almond jelly. They top it with some brown sugar, so the condensed milk is not necessary. I still can't believe it was only $5, which is even enough to share with others. Great deal, great food.

Yelp
Its me again at the same place I am regular here and although I have tried most of the menu, which is not as big but well done and quite various, I always end up ordering either as appetizer or to go an order of calamari/squid and fried tofu! The most tender and well fried (both)! It is not very salty or overly seasoned so when you add the chili sauce or sriracha ... Explotion Service is usually very fast. Now, ambiance can be rather loud because its a small place that is always PACKED and many times with line outside but trust me, 100% worth the wait and the line!
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Talking about efficiency services and attractive prices as well as quality and quantity! Y'all rock! Excellent job owners and screws!
google avatar

Katherine T.

Yelp
You cannot beat the price & portion sizes here for delicious comfort food. One of my favorite snacks is the fried squid. The squid is soo soft and I love the sauces paired with it. I also enjoy their crispy chicken & wonton soup. I love to come here any time I'm craving a quick homey meal!

Yelp
Sad to see the only decent take away was the dumplings. After recommendation from my friend Wayne I was really looking forward to trying this "hidden gem" The lady in the front Hilda was simply rude. As someone who loves Asian food and loves the community I will not be returning. Bland, terrible service, and overall underwhelming.
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Been going here forever with my kids. But the lady serving us the shaved ice was extremely rude today. Guess when my kids want this type of food, drinks/ juices and shaved ice we probably would be going to bring the business to another spot. Paid extra for condensed milk and sugar but they didn't add it when I tried to explain to the lady she basically told me to shush and let her do her job (I guess they do have lots of customers so the service and being friendly is not something of their concern- they'll get less now from my kids and my family). She did added condensed milk when I told her but did it really rudely with an angry face and it was a mess on the cup that I had to wipe off myself. It was a stupid decision to but 3 drinks 2 food items and 2 shaved ice for my son and I here. We will take our hungry bellies elsewhere next time.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
I will never ever come here again. Ordering was a super chaotic process. They had 3 different lines going. Two different in person lines and one computer line. I'm pretty tech savvy and I couldn't figure it out. Picking up food was so crazy. One lady got so mad she started yelling at the staff. She had ordered a snow ice. But since she wasn't in front waiting for it and she was sitting at her table, waiting for her number to be called, she claims they skipped her three times. So I for sure knew to stay up front to wait for my snow ice. Ive coming here for years and I know it's not the cleanest place. And it always smells horrible here. Kind of like sewage.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
GOOD CHEAP EATS!!! One of my favorites if I'm craving Taiwanese popcorn chicken! The portions are sooo big and the flavors are sooooo good. Both dishes totaled to be around $20 and that's crazy with the inflation nowadays. Spicy chicken nugget dish (9/10) Beef noodle soup (9/10) It can get a bit crowded sometimes but that's how you know it's good. The employees are nice and are quick to help clear tables.
google avatar

Stephanie Z.

Yelp
Star Snow Ice and Teriyaki is a great low key place to go for a meal or snack! I almost always get the spicy fried chicken nuggets and/or the spicy fried squid. Both are super crispy with a very light batter and have just the right amount of seasonings. Neither are very spicy, but the flavor is so tasty. The plates are great too; each comes with your choice of meat, rice, an egg, and some veggies. I've never actually dined in, but the atmosphere is very casual. The food sometimes does take a while to come out, especially if you go at busy meal times on the weekends, but you can see the employees working to make everything fresh through the delivery window. The restaurant is located in Dun Huang plaza in Bellaire, so it can be hard to find parking (try the parking garage).
google avatar

Jun L.

Yelp
Fabulous Restaurant!! Quick and easy to navigate, this hidden gem is bustling with lively night life after dark. Though it is crowded, you use a kiosk to select items you want, so the ordering process is quick, accessible, and simple. I ordered the spicy beef tripe and beef flank. Although they are nice snacking portions, it was truly fulfilling and satisfying. The food was delicious! It felt wholesome, fresh, and most importantly, packed with flavorful. My mom approved, and she is truly a spice fiend. The bottom is filled with cucumber, which soaks up the marinade and is just as tasty. For dessert, we got a CYO mango ice cream shaved ice. For the price, it was an incredible and completely worthwhile price. With the choice of four different toppings, I think this is definitely the place to go for bingsoo!! I will definitely be back. :)

Yelp
Food is very affordable and food came out quickly. Food and drink prices are very affordable and they have a big serving of food. The place was a little crowded when we went, that was past 1:30 pm. We will definitely come back and this place is good for anyone who is looking for a budget-friendly meal and a big portion of serving. They have a kiosk also so you can select the food that you want and order from there. The ambiance was okay.

Yelp
- SO MUCH VALUE ($9 for the meal) and didn't even finish - one of my favorite taiwanese popcorn chicken places in houston (not too salty and the chicken has such good texture) - everything tasted so good - service can be a little slow on busy days - lively casual restaurant environment but i got takeout

Yelp
One of my aunties raved about Star Snow Ice so I had to swing by to see it for myself. Upon arriving around 2 pm on a Saturday, the business was bustling and jammed pack with hungry customers! I thought this would take forever to get in line since it pretty extended to the door but the service ladies were efficient and fast! I was able to quickly place my orders and got everything packaged to go nicely shortly after. Service: 5/5. Fast and friendly! They also have an ordering machine in restaurant and an online option to skip the line wait as I found out later. I'm also extremely impressed that with so many orders and people coming through, my order was perfect without any mistakes! Food: 1. Spicy chicken nuggets - 5/5 I ordered 2 of these! Pretty much everyone dining in had a plateful of these crispy, mouthwatering nuggets. Very hard to pass up given the amazing price. 2. Fried Squid - 5/5 Spicy, salty, crispy... and a tad bit chewy but otherwise perfect in my opinion. 3. Avocado smoothie - 5/5 I asked for reduced sugar and my order was exactly how I wanted. Great with boba! They use real fruit in their smoothies and I noticed the workers were putting out fresh batches of cut fruit behind the glass to restock for drinks/shaved ice. 4. Beef shank - 3/5 Beef shank portion was smaller compared to the others but the flavor profile was decent. Served on a bed of cucumbers and veggies. Honestly it was my fault for not knowing what the shank cuts were and I guess it's just not my cup of tea. 5. Beef noodle soup - 5/5 The bowls are HUGE. I even split this bowl 50/50 and still felt stuffed. Flat noodles, beef, and veggies in a flavorful beef broth reminiscent of Vietnamese Bo kho in my opinion. Portion was generous and seasoning was great. I'm usually wary of overly salty noodle soups but this one was just right.

Yelp
oh my gosh what a great deal this place is! This place is always a must for me when I'm craving taiwanese popcorn chicken. When I'm here, I always get the spicy chicken nugget plate for a whopping $7.85 including tax. It comes with rice, a fried egg, a few pieces of tofu, and picked veggies on the side. Guys, for this amount of food, the price is of unheard of these days! I went with one of my friends, and he was shocked by the amount of food they gave me. Easily 2 meals, but I can't help myself.. so I finish it in one sitting. There is a minimum of $5 purchase if you want to use card, but otherwise, they take cash. Star Snow Ice & Teriyaki is in the heart of chinatown, so free parking is plentiful. Great quality, great quantity, great price. Can't recommend this place enough, please give it a try!

Yelp
Great place to stop by if wanting a quick meal. Service was quick and food came out fresh. Flavors of dishes and drinks were on point. Definitely brings back memories from childhood.

Yelp
Can't believe that I've not left a review for this place yet. We try many restaurants, but this is one of the very few places that we return to again and again. Portions here are huge, prices are still great, and the food is delicious. This is simply the perfect trifecta that keeps us coming back. We love the "Spicy Chicken Nugget Dish", which is basically popcorn chicken with rice, and the various other rice dishes. And where else can you get boba milk tea for $3.25 in 2023? We are really glad that this place has survived the pandemic!

Yelp
For the price, the portion size and flavor is good. Have been here several times. Always a good back up option. Best thing here to try are their fruit smoothies.

Yelp
You literally cannot beat the prices at this place. The portion sizes are also very generous. I had the tofu plate which comes with white rice, a fried egg, bok choy, and pickled veggies. You can tell everything is freshly made by how insanely hot the tofu was. Seriously, be careful if you order the tofu because I burned myself lol. I also got the honeydew smoothie which was more like a slushy, but still good. Overall, service was fast, food was good, cheap, and healthy. I would come back here again.

Yelp
My must-have every time I visit this area. Always get the fried pork over rice and it never disappoints. Got the mandatory shaved ice, boba tea, pop chicken, and typically get fried tofu too but didn't this time since I have it with my rice entree already. The place was PACKED and literally one table open which we promptly grabbed. We got a mango ice cream float and the lady gave it to us in a plastic bag but things still spilled. So when it was time to go, I went up to ask for another plastic bag and for some reason the 2 cashiers couldn't understand what I was asking for. Or maybe they were playing ignorant and didn't want to give me the same clear plastic bag? So I just settled for a regular plastic bag since we were in a hurry to get to our hotel. As with any of these type of places, A+ on the food but it's anybody's guess on the customer service. I don't really expect it but it's a bonus if they can be decent in that area.
