NorCal’s Mega-Popular Starbread Filipino Bakery Opens in Chula Vista | Eater San Diego

"I watched customers line up early before the official opening of San Diego’s first Starbread Bakery in Chula Vista, eager to buy fresh-out-of-the-oven Spanish bread, also known as señorita bread, the specialty of the famous Filipino bakery chain based in Northern California. The bite-sized pastries are baked in small batches to ensure peak freshness and are enriched with melted butter and sugar; at Starbread the señorita bread is sold in multiples from bags of 5 pieces up to boxes of 60 and is a fixture at Filipino family gatherings and parties. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the shop also sells pandesal (Filipino rolls), cookies, cupcakes, croissants, and a variety of doughnuts that include Filipino-style bitso-bitso. Beyond the Spanish bread, its bestsellers are malasadas, the Portuguese fried-dough treat offered with tropical fillings like coconut, guava, mango, and pineapple. Area residents Paolo and Eleanor Seen and Jeff and Nikki Bangsal are overseeing Starbread’s San Diego expansion and plan to add coffee from a local roaster along with new items such as ube señorita bread and a savory version made with hot dogs, and they hope to open more stores in San Diego, possibly in Mira Mesa." - Candice Woo

Cult-Favorite Filipino Bakery Starbread Is Expanding to San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A Filipino bakery with a huge following in Northern California and the Bay Area, Starbread Bakery—named one of Eater SF’s standout Filipino spots in the East Bay—is headed for San Diego after beginning to franchise during the pandemic; the family-owned brand, which has recently opened branches in Anaheim and Las Vegas, will open its first San Diego outpost this May in Chula Vista. I learned the founders started baking their flagship señorita bread in the 1980s: also known as Spanish bread, it’s a cross between a dinner roll and a pastry that’s slathered with melted butter, sugar, and breadcrumbs, sold warm out of the oven and often purchased in large quantities for potlucks and family gatherings. Local couple Paolo and Eleanor Seen, who operate the Donut, Hello mini doughnut cart and catering business, are bringing the brand to Chula Vista and plan to stock a variety of doughnuts—including ube-flavored—and say offerings could expand to more señorita flavors as well as new items unique to San Diego locations." - Candice Woo

Señorita Bread so good. Ube donut was good as well! I went on a Sunday at 3pm, there was not much donuts left, but there sure were still taking orders for señorita bread is which is what I initially came for! I will be coming back to try the malasada flavored donuts in the future.

Small Filipino bakery that sells what some people refer to as señorita bread. The bread itself doesn’t have much taste to it, they are just a little sweet and extremely soft. They are the best when you eat them hot of course. If you want a little more of a sweet taste, can dip in honey and they also taste yummy that way as well.

I've been buying from Starbread since I used to live in the bay area. This bakery used to be sharing a space with Ling Nam in Daly city. Now that we have one here in SD,I was excited! However,I notice that the quality of the senorita bread has declined. It doesnt taste the same anymore. Not to mention the price has increased to 80 cents each too. I'm just dismayed that they lessen the sugar and they look smaller that before. i know the inflation have hit businesses hard but I hope they up their quality to make up for it.🤦‍♂️I'll probably pass next time.

Freshly baked senorita bread is out of this world. Even better than the Norcal stores I've had. They use plenty of butter and its not overly sweet either. Perfect gift for the office or home gatherings!

The establishment is nice , clean and simple they do have a variety of goods. I loved the bread itself, however everything we got that had a filling (which was everything we ordered , minus the senorita bread,) it just didn’t taste good to me. The bread / donut itself surrounding the malasadas and the bread rolls we got are soo yummy, 😋 but once I tasted the filling it just seemed so artificial and not really made in house (not saying that’s the case, idk it’s just how the quality of the fillings tasted.) My husband had ordered , Coconut cream bread and Dulce de leche bread . I enjoyed the senorita especially when it’s nice and warm. Parking is free & is shared with other businesses but there’s plenty of spots to park. Ordering was nice and quick.

I have never had this bread before and I live right on the street. I recommend this sweet tasty treat if you want to bring something new to the office instead of bagels and donuts. This is by far delicious! I purchase the star bread.

So glad that there is now a Starbread in SD. Being from the San Francisco Bay Area, the location in Newark unfortunately closed. The service here at the Chula Vista location was excellent. The young lady was very friendly, greeted us right away and conversed with us for a few minutes while we were waiting for our order of fresh and pipin warm seniorita bread. If you’re not familiar with seniorita bread, it is similar to a petite croissant with the dough on the heavier side. It is warm, sweet and very buttery. It would pair well with a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate for that sweet tooth. Give it a try, you just might love it!

Starbread Bakery in Chula Vista is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth! Their signature Señorita Bread is an absolute delight—warm, buttery, and perfectly sweet with just the right amount of crunch. It’s the kind of treat you can’t stop eating! The bakery is clean, the staff is friendly, and the aroma alone will make you want to buy a dozen (or two). Starbread Bakery is a local treasure that’s impossible to resist. Highly recommend!
