Starbucks Is Not Welcome at Yosemite, Say Nature Enthusiasts | Eater

"A planned outlet from a major specialty coffee chain is slated to be added to the Basecamp Eatery food court at Yosemite Valley Lodge as part of a food-court revamp led by Yosemite Hospitality (an Aramark subsidiary); the unit would be integrated into the food court rather than freestanding, a store-manager job listing is already posted, and the rollout is targeted for spring. The proposal has generated strong local backlash — a Change.org petition with over 11,000 signatures warns that it could open the door to further undue development and erode the park’s essence, and commenters have expressed worries about increased litter, plastic waste, commercialization of a natural setting, and the chain’s environmental respect (and coffee quality). Yosemite Hospitality says the change is meant to “enhance the visitor experience” for the roughly four million people who visit Yosemite Valley each year." - Greg Morabito

This Starbucks is very busy. However, the line moved quickly and the coffee was exactly like any other Starbucks. I loved enjoying my breakfast looking at 1/2 dome as the backdrop.

To our surprise, there was a Starbucks in Yosemite Park. You can sit on the patio and drink coffee with a beautiful view of the waterfall.

The atmosphere is warm and cozy inside. A Starbucks that guarantees a uniform taste wherever you go. It's the only Starbucks in Yosemite Valley.

The man who served on Saturday 16th August 2025 deserves the starbucks employee of the year. We went for a coffee Earlish and he was cheerful and helpful not just to my wife with food choice but also to a pair of children. We went back about 5 hours later for another coffee and he was still there just as cheerful and helpful. I wish more were like him. Big shout out from me.

Google
It almost felt like the employees were being punished by having to work there — or maybe not getting paid? Joking aside, the cashier being visibly annoyed by a senior asking two basic questions, him likely being for the first time at Starbucks, is really not cool. Coffee is good though.

Google
5 stars for the first day of our trip. We stayed at the lodge so we all had coffee for breakfast and Frappes later in the day. The next day after our hike we went to mobile order and they were sold out of all flavors/syrups. Very disappointing they really need better inventory management.

Google
Having a Starbucks in Yosemite Valley is a BIG W when you’re craving decent coffee in the middle of nature. But I was disappointed to find they were completely out of non-dairy milk… especially as someone who’s lactose intolerant. The store also felt disorganized, even though it wasn’t particularly busy. A bit more attention to inventory and management would go a long way.

Google
If you’re looking for a disappointing Starbucks experience, this is the place. During our visit to Yosemite, this location consistently ran out of basic staples like iced coffee, cold brew, and milk alternatives—every single day. The staff clearly didn’t want to be there and made little effort to hide their frustration. At one point, I was even told to “go next door” if I didn’t like their lack of options. As other reviews have mentioned, the line moves quickly—but only because there's so little to choose from. Inventory seemed to diminish with each passing day, and customer service was equally poor. This Starbucks is operated by Aramark, which holds a monopoly on nearly all food and lodging services in Yosemite Valley. That means you're stuck with subpar service no matter where you go. If I were Starbucks corporate, I’d revoke their license—Aramark does a disservice to the brand and the experience Starbucks usually delivers. If you can, bring your own coffee. And definitely file a complaint with Starbucks directly. I did, and they assured me they’re looking into it.

Yelp
A little slower with service, but it was right after 6am opening with limited staff so that was understandable. Cashier at drive through was efficient (with their typical great playlist in the distance and fan at window for fly control). He was helpful with any supplies we needed before heading up to Yosemite for the morning. (Seasonal Strawberry cake pops are back you guys!): and it was just the touch of sweet. Also had the Summer Berry Refresher and it was definitely refreshing.

Yelp
Busy, busy location. Of course it is, just see where it's located.. Smack in the middle of Yosemite! But they're quick. I placed multiple orders online and ordered in-person and everything we got was accurately made and only took a few minutes. From simpler medium roast coffee orders to customized iced mochas to cinnamon lattes. Food-wise they were pretty much out of everything by late lunch time. However we did snag a jalapeno chicken pocket one evening, which was a treat between hikes. No seating inside the Starbucks but plenty in the base camp eatery, to which the Starbucks is attached.

Yelp
Once I walked in everywhere was pretty dirty. I asked the barista with light brown short hair she was rude and not helpful. The lady with light brown hair and the one with black apron were eating and talking while I was waiting to purchase my drinks. Worst Starbucks experience.

Yelp
Nice employees, and very clean as expected. Although they were out of the boba pearls that are included in the Summer Berry Refresher. They swapped it out with the strawberry sauce it was good, but the taste was extremely different.

Yelp
A basic Starbucks in the heart of Yosemite. Of course the prices are going to be higher so be prepared to pay for it. Other than that it's as expected.... except for this early morning I was served by an aloof girl that seemed to be still in her teen angst phase. Still, if you don't like to deviate from the norm it could be nice that you can get your bux fix here.

Yelp
A Starbucks inside Yosemite National Park!! That's crazy! And convenient! We loved it! Of course being a Starbucks, the line could get big especially during the morning. Luckily when we got there there were only two groups in front of us. Full menu. They also have fridges with to-go options. It's tiny, but there's plenty of sitting in the dinning area of the lodge's food court. Staff was quick and friendly! Made line for about 10 mins then waited another 15 mins to get our order. Coffee was great and the bagel I ordered was warm and toasty!

Yelp
Right in the heart of Yosemite village, inside the basecamp of Yosemite lodge is this Starbucks. The service was fast, it wasn't an affiliated store but the actual Starbucks store, that offered pretty much all the menu. The baristas were great and the place is at a very convenient location with other food options. I'd you're craving coffee or a mug souvenir - check it out

Yelp
Starbucks in Yosemite! Might not sound like a big deal to most but with every hotel unfortunately offering really bad coffee this just might save you in the early mornings. All other locations are very far from the valley, over an hour away on very windy roads. We were also extra lucky on this last visit because our hotel room at the lodge was about a 3 min walk over here. Coffee was great and they also have some food options. Service was quick and friendly. There's a beautiful Yosemite inspired mural. Note ~ this location doesn't offer a drive thru. Prices are higher across the board due to its very remote location. I also noticed there aren't any hours posted anywhere which leads me to believe they change often depending on sunrise times. In our case with sunrise around 7am in late Oct they opened at 6:30am which was perfect timing to grab your coffee and then go outside to find your spot in the meadow for sunrise.

Yelp
Starbucks at Yosemite does not accept cash as payment....this is scary...1984 ish This is terrible ! So very sad

Gurkirat B.

Yelp
It was our first visit at this Starbucks, and the employe named Grace was very rude to us, she had zero customer service and was frustrated throughout taking and handing us the order, and the reason she gave us was that we placed 11 orders of drinks, which just doesnt justify the behavior. Also few of our drinks were not made according to the customizations we made.

Yelp
The murals on the wall when you walk in are fantastic. I the Starbucks itself is not very big, but as well staffed. My drink was delicious. Though they were very busy the staff was friendly and efficient.

daniel l.

Yelp
If I could rate this a zero I would shout out to Sheree though for being an attentive barista sadly she was planted on register, if not I know she would've made the drinks perfectly. Other bars were too busy talking and had us wait 30 min for 2 drinks with no one in line. The shift lead with the glasses and bangs should not have this position. These licensed stores need to be more aware who you hire.

Yelp
Rush rush rush, that's all this entire place is about, but at least employees weren't as unpleasant as the workers at the cafe and shops here! They were polite enough though, we had to get some sparkling water and snacks here cause lunch was so nasty next door! Well, at least they have a Starbucks in the valley so it's better than nothing!

Yelp
I would give zero stars if I could. I ordered a venti iced pecan crunch oat milk latte and a venti iced peppermint white chocolate mocha on the app, and both drinks just tasted like espresso with milk, no flavor or sweetness at all. My sister and I went back in to ask if they could add the syrup or remake the drinks, and Karis (sp?) already had an attitude asking if I would like them to add MORE syrup. I let her know that it didn't even taste like there was any syrup in the drinks at all, and she said if the sticker says there's syrup, then there is syrup, but they can add more if I want. I get this drink often at home, so I know what it should taste like. Harrison remade the drinks, and they still didn't taste like they had any sweetener, and he didn't even put the nondairy vanilla sweet cream cold foam or the pecan crunch topping, so I asked for a refund. I wasn't going to walk away with $16.20 worth of drinks that don't even taste right. When I asked Sara for a refund, she said that she couldn't refund the app, couldn't give a gift card or cash, she said she could only refund to any debit/credit card and it didn't have to be the card I paid with. I had to walk all the way back to the car to get my card so that she could refund me. All three employees had an attitude the entire time. If it wasn't bad enough that they couldn't make the drinks properly, the customer service was just as bad as the drinks. Definitely would not recommend this Starbucks location unless you want to be disappointed.

Yelp
Would give 0 stars if I could. WORSE service ever avoid coming here if you can. 3 girls on bar making drinks and all of them were chatting the whole time not making the drinks at all. They were chatting with the maintenance guy not caring that orders were coming in. One of the girls with glasses and a lot of pins on her apron (couldn't see her name tag) was in the middle of making my drink when she saw the clock strike 6:30 she stopped my drink mid way left it on the bar didn't tell any of the other girls to take over and started rolling up the mats and locking the doors. My unfinished drink stayed in the bar untouched for about 6 mins until it was eventually seen by one of the other girls. It was just a caramel frappe it's not that hard to make they halfassed the drink regardless didn't blend it right and didn't put caramel drizzle on top. I usually don't leave bad reviews unless it's needed and this coffee shop needs it. Whoever the manager is needs to re-train these girls again because today's service was not it.

Yelp
Exited to have my cup of coffee in the middle of this beautiful park! Very nice baristas and very patient as well, very clean and quiet coffee shop. Everything so organized which I love! I was looking forward to getting my collectible mug, but they don't have any. They do not have private restroom so you will have to use the ones from the cafeteria. They close early, so I am so glad I had gone earlier. They have their own entrance but also share an entrance trough the cafeteria. Their are lots of available sitting in the cafeteria area and you are able to work if you need too. The shuttle stops in front of it and it will be #8 stop "Yosemite Valley Lodge". I hope this helps!! Enjoy :)

Yelp
What a welcome surprise. Starbucks at Yosemite. Prices were right in line with what I pay back home in Massachusetts. Lines were long. But moved quickly. No seating of their own I've become a cold brew addict and this fed the addiction.

Yelp
Five stars because a hot cup of Sumatra after a long ass hike is all I want. The people that wear Noth Face, Patagonia, Mountain Hard Wear...etc are the ones complaining about the chain being in Yosemite. Yet the stores in the park sell big name food items. Hypocrisy much? And the markets sell the things so you can make a cup of coffee yourself. No thanks. If you have beef with Starbucks, then just don't patronize them. Since I hold a national park pass, and I visit Yosemite all the time, I will take advantage of this location for sure! Glad it's here!

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to see a Starbucks now exists in the Park. It is located within the Base Camp at the Yosemite Lodge. The service was just as you expect any Starbucks franchise to be: friendly, quick and deliciously made drinks. This particular location is not going to be filled with the normal seats and WiFi-using customers. Instead, it is designed to zig zag through a line, grab your drink and get to your adventures in the park. If you want to sit down and enjoy your cup of Joe, you will have to step into the base camp food court to grab a sit or you can step outside into the patio and sit there.

Yelp
Starbucks and Yosemite are two of my favorite things. As crazy busy as this place is, it was very clean. Despite the busyness, the baristas still made us feel welcome and not like they were just running through the line. Obviously we'll be back every time we go back to Yosemite.
google avatar

Yelp
Store was cool obviously because it was in Yosemite, but the workers were unfriendly and acted put out to do their own job. They would charge extra for a side of milk with a black coffee when normally Starbucks will not and by 9 am they were out of most of their breakfast sandwiches. Wish the employees seemed more excited and friendly to greet the customers.
google avatar

Charley C.

Yelp
Yep they put a Starbucks in Yosemite. I wonder what will be next? Anyway that is something the future will show us. For now the addition of the Starbucks is a welcome site for travelers. The park only has so many choices, and this is a good choice for a reasonably good coffee or tea drink with all the usual Starbucks options. It opens a 7 am so the early risers are standing in line eagerly awaiting the key to be placed in the lock for the entrance to the first beverage of the day. The staff was oh so nice, and the Starbucks was the Starbucks.
google avatar

Mackenzie M.

Yelp
You know what? All joking aside, this place was pretty great. The reason for this? No plastic straws! Imagine my happiness when I saw that the straws are made from biodegradable paper. In addition, they encourage people to buy an affordable cheap reusable coffee cup instead of the plastic kind. There still are other single use plastic products at this location, and I hope they phase them all out eventually. But the steps they have made are wonderful. I am sure the NPS would not allow Starbucks to open unless they made such concessions to protect the environment. Also, the mural in the store is worth a look.

Yelp
Got here at 7 and the store was already closed.. pissed off because I just hiked half dome. Really wanted something from Starbucks but they are closed early for no reason.
google avatar

Yelp
Aside from the fact a Starbucks seems completely out of place in Yosemite, the service was mediocre. The two items I ordered( blonde roast and one of the eggs sandwiches) were out. How hard is it to keep a normal dip coffee roast available at 8am on Thursday(not busy at all). Ohhh and they were out of raw sugar?? So weird that NPS allows a major coffee chain in the park when there are many local coffee roasters/shops that would be a much better fit. ...there's an empty store front next to Starbucks...they should put a Target in or maybe a Abercrombie & Fitch Rant ended.

Christine M.

Yelp
We are on a cross country trip and have visits starbucks in many states. This was by far the worst experience. Staff:aggressive, as if enjoying a power trip, dominating and intimidating customers. I was holding a wiggling infant and managing two other children under 7 and was yelled at upon entering because my mask slipped under my nose. Another customer picking up their drink was yelled at because they sipped it in the store. Another customer was yelled at upon entering the facility that they couldn't come in because they were at their 6 person capacity. Come on... get a greeter if you're going to aggressively enforce that. It was not like they were having a rush. We couldn't wait to leave and wished we would never have gone there. What a sour bunch with a massive power trip. No thanks!

J S.

Yelp
the staff - is a hit or miss - BAD ATTITUDE!! it's not terribly busy and they have it easy in the slow covid times - but they can be rude and obnoxious. I asked for sugar after ordering several coffee items and the lady (blond) throws out one packet with an attitude. It was laughable. I asked for more and she stopped and asked how many ? Enough for at least three people since I'm holding three cups. She made me say exact number of packets of sugar and what type . It's like like they were rationing them and there was a sugar shortage. Just rude customer service or maybe she has issues w her private life and is bringing the attitude to work?!

Brenda A.

Yelp
Whatever you do don't take your mask down EVER even to take a sip, or you will hear screaming barristas. I am wearing a mask so I clearly understand there is a state mandate. Jesus! And have a wonderful day!!

Yelp
An oasis in the middle of one of the most beautiful places on earth, this Starbucks has great personnel and the same excellent food & drinks offered at your neighborhood shop. Same prices, too, which was a pleasant surprise.
google avatar

Josie H.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of getting coffee here multiple times since it opened. Jake, Jordan, and Isabel are always friendly and smiling. My coffee has been delicious every time. Sometimes the line is really long and folks get impatient, but the staff maintains a good attitude and has a smile for each customer.

Yelp
If you like lattes without espresso, this is the place for you! There were six baristas working and the place was in chaos. Starbucks need to do serious retraining before the tourist season starts.

Ketu J.

Yelp
Standard Starbucks but without seating and attached to a food court. Line was a bit slow but it's only the fifth day open.
