North End Argues Against Proposed Starbucks | Eater Boston

"A previously contested proposal at 749 E Broadway prompted community pushback in 2016 over fears that a national coffee chain would siphon business from local shops; despite opposition, the project ultimately moved forward and the chain opened in that space." - Dana Hatic

A Guide to Non-Local Coffee Chains in Boston | Eater Boston

"The large Seattle-based coffee chain has widely expanded in Boston but has sometimes faced local pushback; a proposed South Boston location at 749 E Broadway drew community concern that it would siphon business from neighborhood shops, yet the city approved the license in August 2016 and the store is now operating." - Dana Hatic

Google
What an incredible experience!! If you are fortunate enough to be there when Dev is working you’re order will be perfect and prompt! He really went above and beyond for my family. He was extremely friendly! It’s nice to see there’s still kind people in the world! Not to mention he’s wicked funny and will tell you a joke!

Google
This is a decent Starbucks, but I typically go at around 9am for a coffee and it’s a mob scene at that time. There are other small business coffee spots in the area that you can support!

Google
You need to fill in-store customer orders as a priority over pick up orders...no reason to sit around for 10+ minutes for a black iced coffee. Ridiculous.

Lynn

Google
I was served by Dev recently and he always greets everytime I randomly come in here! He pointed out suggestions for me on the menu when I was a bit indecisive and we had a great conversation as he multitasked and made the best hot grande drink I’ve had in a while. He’s a cool dude!

I spend a lot of money at your location! Tonight April 29 @ 510pm I was walking by and had to use the ladies room and they would not allow me to unless I purchased something! Completely horrified that both girls said no. I get if it was a bunch of kids. ,However , I not a kid actually 60. I have never asked to use it before and again horrified. I will never go into your establishment again due to this! And I told them I have spent a lot of money in here. Just not at this moment she said no. I get a policy but come on! It was very quiet with no one in line and 3 people sitting at a table!

In BOSTON you will need a reliable place for the restroom. Customers Only. STARBUCKS I easiest to access and they all have clean restrooms.

Google
"I can't take your order at the register, despite being at the register. Somebody else has to do it." Ask me how much I care about who takes my order.

Google
Everyone was super nice and brightened up my day! I walked in this morning and Lisa at the register was so kind and friendly! The gentleman, Chip, also calling out orders was super nice as well! It was a wonderful start to the morning.

Yelp
I've been coming in here every day for 2 months since my local place closed. I put silly things on the cup. Today I wrote #keepamericagreat on it. They ripped it off. I ordered it again and he ripped it off again. I said this is bullshit and put the coffee back. They called the police and kicked me out.

Yelp
I've been here 3 times total and 2 of those times were NOT good experiences. First visit: Order is straight up incorrect. Completely different drink than what I asked for. Second visit: I made a mobile order for a sandwich and a drink and only the sandwich was made. I waited until 5 mins after the expected ready time. I then ask one of the baristas if they received my drink order, to which she turns and asks another barista about it. She never said if the drink was being made or what. She just proceeded to act like I wasn't there. 10 minutes later I had to ask ANOTHER barista the same thing, and only then did my drink finally get made. Out of everyone's mobile orders, why is it that ONLY MINE WAS MESSED UP? If you're interested in getting the wrong order/waiting stupid times to get your order, come to this location. Seriously, this place sucks. Train your staff better.

Yelp
So annoying waiting for your coffee and seeing the staff congregated behind the counter socializing. No rush getting orders filled here

Yelp
This is a really nice Starbucks. Lots of tables and chairs to sit in. Staff is very professional and efficient. Great location in South Boston, very clean inside. I like that they have some comfortable chairs over by the window. So if you don't want to sit at a table you can relax and one of those chairs, do some work, use the Wi-Fi, eat a sandwich. Their breakfast sandwiches are quite good.

Yelp
The staff are super friendly and accommodating. The manager, Erin, does an awesome job and makes the place feel like a neighborhood coffee shop but with all the great stuff that comes along with Starbucks.

Yelp
Giving one star because of one girl in particular, Annie, rest of the ladys are fabulous. Someone should let her know that she is working in the customer service industry and should learn how to greet her clientele. I know taking all those coffee orders can be stressful ,but if I'm paying $5 for my coffee I think it's my duty to correct you if you are writing down a wrong order. And that way prevent a hold up if made the wrong way .

Yelp
Not sure why all the bad reviews. Many seem to be from when this location had just opened and was still figuring things out. There was a lot of controversy in the neighborhood about this location when it was proposed, but I think it has proven to be a net benefit to the area. Yes, it could be cleaner - the staff seems to struggle to keep up with the trash bins and I've noticed fruit flies several times in the display case. However, they rarely mess up my order. Plus, the staff is generally very friendly and polite. Parking is tough and people sometimes double park nearby, which is terrible for traffic, but most customers seem to walk to the store. It doesn't have a ton of seating, but it usually seems to be enough. I come here to work from time to time and I can almost always get a seat and an outlet. WiFi is always fast and reliable. Good place to come and do some work during off-peak hours. During peak hours, expect a bit of a wait for food or order ahead through the app!

Yelp
If you're looking wrong orders, long wait times, and inaccurate pickup times this Starbucks is perfect for you. This location has never improved and has constantly been the worst Starbucks I've been to.

Yelp
Amazing staff, always happy to see customers & greet me with a warm hello each day! This Starbucks is always filled with customers & the employees do a great job at successfully managing everyone's needs

Yelp
Easily the worst Starbucks location in Boston. They never ever get your order right. It can take over 20 minutes for your mobile order to be ready during a non busy time. And one girl behind the counter who works quite frequently has the worst attitude I'm pretty sure the entire shop can feel it. Go in on a busy weekend morning, you'll know who I'm talking about. They need some help here for sure.

Yelp
Today was the second time this month that a female employee was rude, aggressive and condescending toward me. I think there needs to be more training or people skills.

Yelp
News Years morning 0903AM Broadway Starbucks. I walked in ordered a large hot chocolate and a cinnamon roll of some sort. Paid for it and left a tip. Made effort even though paid with ATM CARD. Tried to give them my name but my service rep walked away and the other served a customer. Used the restroom. Came back (5 min. later). Went over to the "Letter Counter" looked for my order, not there. Went back to counter where a gentleman order the very same thing + 3 more coffees.... I asked the status of order... They said "I'm sorry... your order!? What is your name sir?" I said Rob but ur not going to have that as no one waited to take my name. So I have same order again. I was then bombarded with the peanut allergy inquisition... I said I only ordered a cinnamon roll. I was told "No more here.. we have coffee cake type thingy." It may have nuts.. not sure... I said "Ok... not worried about the nut thing... Just wasting to get my order I paid for!" I'm then told in the way." Sonia it and wait 6 more minutes now I'm at 12 min. And counting. Remember the fellas who ordered the same....& more???? "Hot chocolate " is then announced into running up and its that gentleman's not mine. Mind you he came in AFTER I used the restroom..... He is served and he's out the door. I then ask again about my order and sim presented with the "Thousand Yard Stare" I request my money back and I'm again greeted with "Why sir..... What did your order?" I got my money back(quite polite and very efficient) but they kept my tip. It was only a dollar.... But I think one gets the point....

Yelp
Very busy location but they seem to move relatively quickly with orders. Store upkeep is sub par: -Trash cans never emptied (after hours of slow times) -bathrooms not cleaned or refilled. I realize this is a new store but it needs a lot of work.

Yelp
"The customer is always last" should be the slogan for this Starbucks. I have been a barista and worked in many cafes, and there is absolutely no reason why customers should have to stand in line with 1 employee (or no employees) helping them, while 3-4 employees bumble around behind the counter restocking and cleaning their stations. This is on a regular basis, not one or two occasions. The employees are nice but the management is horrible.

Stacey B.

Yelp
This is legitimately the slowest Starbucks I have ever been to. Prepare to wait. Even if you have a mobile order...for 20 minutes...you'll still be waiting.

Yelp
Hi ... my name is Sarah , Erin , Ben , and Dev are OUTSTANDING!!!!! This Starbucks would not survive without them !!! I go in there every morning and I watch in awe , at some of these people that place their coffee down , on the spilled milk and sugar , that the person before them left ... ... I never saw such slobs in my life , and they don't take into consideration that these baristas are working as fast as they possibly can for such an extremely busy Starbucks ... they shouldn't have to clean up after these high paid babies that apparently have no consideration ... I was brought up so differently , thank you God .... common sense , clean up after you make a mess ... there's not a morning I go in there and not clean off the counter , from you people .. and one more thing , if you have all these complaints then do us all a favor and go elsewhere !!!!! Also , peeing outside , sprawled out all over the sidewalk , during the parade is another sign of where you came from !!!! The beer cans go in the garbage not outside somebody's house door.... grow up !!!! It's time for you to go back home , wherever you came from ... people FROM South Boston DON'T would NEVER portray themselves as you guys do !! Destroying our town is not gonna be tolerated !! You should be ashamed of yourself doing the things you do , in front of family's and children ... Again not all ...but a ton of you know who you are ... I deal with people everyday on Summer Street , and I know great workers when I see it !!! Any company would jump to hire these hard to come by baristas

Yelp
Today is the first time I've been to this location. My 17 y/o daughter had a job interview today, and we wanted a quick "pick me up." When we walked inside, I was encouraged because there were no other customers in the store. However, even with TWO employees behind the counter, and even though they acknowledged us standing at the register, we still ended up waiting almost 15 minutes before the man came to take out order. And at that point it was already too late as we were putting our money away because my daughter would've been late for an appointment had we waited for drinks to be made. Oh by the way, the girl behind the counter was just wiping the walls behind the coffee machine and ignoring us. I don't know what the man was doing, but I can only assume he was doing a "make ahead" order. But if you have a customer standing at the counter, why would you not at least start their order, or why would the girl, who had looked directly at us, not stop what she's doing on the wall and take our order? I am extremely disappointed as I've been to multiple locations throughout the city and have never had this level of rude behavior by a barista. If yelp had the option of 0 stars I would do this. Unfortunately it makes me put at least 1 star. Do not go to this location unless you have at least a half an hour to spend standing in line ordering and waiting for your drink.

Yelp
Beautiful coffee shop in southey, would visit again for a delicious iced coffee...

Yelp
Most Starbucks that I go to have mastered the art of getting your drink to you as quickly as possible-unfortunately the Starbucks on East Broadway has not grasped that concept yet. I have gone here upwards of 10-15 times and have probably gotten my drink in a timely manner (and made correctly about 2 or 3 times max). This morning was a good example-I ordered a black iced coffee (mostly because I was in a rush). Rather than the cashier making the coffee (which would be protocol in most other Starbucks), the cashier proceeded to put my empty cup in a line behind 7 other cups (of drinks that take a lotttt longer than iced coffee). I waited 8 minutes for my black iced coffee to be handed to me (while the cashier had no customers behind me and was fiddling with the food display while one girls made all of these drinks). Figure it out Starbucks!
