Brookline Starbucks Union Returns to Work After Months-Long Strike | Eater Boston

"Unionized baristas at the Brookline location near Boston University ended a months-long strike on Sept. 21 after picketing nearly continuously since July 18 following a June vote to unionize. Workers had accused management of creating a chaotic, hostile work environment and, in a July letter, alleged that an interim manager illegally threatened discipline or termination over compliance with a newly implemented policy and that the company had not bargained in good faith. The district manager agreed to involve employees in an investigation of the interim manager, seek her replacement, and collaborate on scheduling and understaffing concerns upon their return — developments the union framed as a victory. A company spokesperson countered that employees were returning with no new conditions but said the chain looks forward to scheduling collective bargaining sessions; the dispute unfolded amid a nationwide unionization wave and sanctions from the National Labor Relations Board against the global coffee chain." - Adam H. Unionized Starbucks Baristas Are on Strike in Brookline, Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Baristas at the Commonwealth Avenue store began an open-ended strike on July 18, staging a picket outside the store from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the crew had voted to unionize the prior month by a reported 10–0 count with six ballots challenged. In a letter to management the employees allege a pattern of unfair labor practices and a chaotic, hostile work environment since the vote, naming an interim manager who they say has cut long-time employees’ hours, understaffed shifts while hiring new hires, and threatened discipline or termination over a new availability policy. Workers — including barista Sarah Chan and shift manager Nora Rossi — describe chronic understaffing that forces skipped breaks, hurts sales, cleanliness, and morale, and cite allegations that the interim manager has used harmful rhetoric about race, gender, and orientation. One employee, Taylor Dickerson, reports her hours were cut roughly in half after unionizing despite open availability and prior consistent scheduling. The group asks that the manager be removed or retrained, requests monthly labor reviews with staff, and say calls to the store and corporate press inquiries went unanswered; the dispute is presented as part of broader accusations of anti-union tactics by the company nationwide." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Great spot to get some work done while enjoying a delicious iced coffee! The drink was well-made with a good balance of cream and coffee, and the sprinkle of cinnamon (or another topping) was a nice touch. The ambiance was cozy, with plenty of seating and a steady flow of customers. Wi-Fi was reliable, making it a great place to be productive. Overall, a solid Starbucks experience

Was standard Starbucks. Nothing to write home about. Service was pretty good. You'll get the typical Starbucks stuff. Can be tough to find a seag. Lot's of people using computers at tables.

I always go into this Starbucks and get an iced Carmel macchiato add a splash of cream. Joan makes my iced macchiato perfect just the way I like it she’s the best! This morning I came for my macchiato and Alex zalex whatever his name was ! Gave me an attitude as I was explaining my order, he then proceeded to give me an attitude because he didn’t understand and my coffee was made WRONG it was literally just all cream !! Yeah treat your customers the way you would like to be treated next time I won’t be so nice if anyone gives me an attitude unacceptable I’ll wait for Joan to work and grab my coffee order.

I dont often write reviews but this location deserves a round of applause. First of all, the staff is some of the kindest, most thoughtful, and caring team I have come across in a Starbucks establishment. They have a great team going and it shows in their service. This place has some of the BEST cold foam too. I cant describe it, but they know how to make it super fluffy and creamy. Thank you to all the hardworking baristas here who always make my day! You guys are amazing :)

Hands down the best pumpkin 🎃 spice latte (PSL) I ever had. Everything was so right about it. Very polite and caring clerks and baristas. The order was taken care of in a very timely manner. One of my favorite spots in Boston University right in front of student health services. There are chairs available to sit. The music is right and the vibe is just great!

I am generally easy going and really don’t like to leave reviews like this- baristas take a lot of abuse on the chin and deal with irritated and obnoxious customers all day long - I’ve been there and believe that they’re often doing their best and deserve better treatment across the board - from both Starbucks as an organization and the general public they wait on; unfortunately today’s visit was a truly terrible experience. I walked in maybe 3 minutes after ordering, it’s mid morning and they’re busy so I expect to wait 5-10 mins, surprisingly there weren’t many people in the store - kale and mushroom egg bites were already sitting on the counter (okay wow +1, that was very quick!) - 15 minutes later I’m still waiting on two drip coffees. They finally show up and I walk back to my office. I just opened up my egg bites and am greeted by two dark brown shriveled hockey pucks that were lost in the back of the oven last month and were just discovered this morning - unfortunately not worth walking back 10 minutes to wait in line and request a replacement but hopefully this review is seen by management and used to train staff on what’s acceptable to serve. I can handle food being well-done / “crispy” but these are inedible and completely unrecognizable from the product I ordered - if they were donuts or pastries I could have at least reconstituted them by dunking them in my coffee - to quote a well known Scottish chef, “What A SHAME!”

The location is convenient with bunch of college students. But the stuff are just so rude and impatient who kind of ruined my general expectation of Starbucks. What a shame and waste of the location.

Google
2 stars because I sympathize with the employees. I waited 26 minutes for this 3/4 full coffee. 3 people attending to a busy university location. Employees couldn’t catch a breath. Was I mad about my coffee? Definitely. But I sure as hell feel worse for them. MANAGEMENT: Get your workers help. They will burn out, quit and your customers will stop coming.
