Starbucks Workers Plan Strikes Through Christmas Eve | Eater

"In 2024 the union grew across the U.S.: in October the 500th location unionized, and now there are over 525 stores in 45 states that have voted to unionize. The union agreed to begin bargaining in February, but negotiations have stalled — the union accuses the company of failing to present a viable economic proposal, despite the company’s insistence that they settle a contract by year-end, and has launched an unfair labor practice strike in response. SBWU has planned a series of escalating strikes beginning today and ending December 24; on December 20 workers walked off the job at 15 stores in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Chicago, with more locations announced later, and by December 23 stores in a dozen metro areas were on strike, including pickets in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Denver, St. Louis, and Portland, Oregon — by Christmas Eve hundreds of stores could be on strike. Local walkouts began at a location in Burbank in Los Angeles, and in Chicago included one in Edgewater and one in Bucktown; workers are asking customers not to buy from any locations for the duration of the strike. Michelle Eisen, a Buffalo barista and bargaining delegate, emphasized executive pay and bargaining failures: “In September, Brian Niccol became CEO with a compensation package worth at least $113 million. It’s worth a shocking 10,000 times the median hourly wage for a barista,” and: “In October, we were ready to exchange comprehensive economic proposals. In October, November, and December, the company failed to bring viable economic proposals to the table that included real investment in baristas. This is backtracking on months and months of progress and promises from the company to work toward an end-of-year framework ratification. We’re ready to do what it takes to show the company the consequences of not keeping their promises to baristas.” In a statement to Eater the company said: “We are focused on enhancing the partner (employee) experience, with over $3 billion invested in the last three years. [The company] offers a competitive average pay of over $18 per hour, and best-in-class benefits,” including healthcare and paid family leave for baristas who work at least 20 hours a week, while also arguing that union proposals (which the union frames as a minimum of $20 an hour for baristas and $24.50 for shift supervisors) would be unsustainable — the company characterized Workers United proposals as calling for “an immediate increase in the minimum wage of hourly partners by 64%, and by 77% over the life of a three-year contract.” Bargaining has produced tentative agreements on paid parental leave and just-cause firing, but the union says the company “proposed an economic package with no new wage increases for union baristas now and a guarantee of only 1.5% in future years,” and has not resolved hundreds of outstanding unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB. Lynne Fox, President of Workers United, said: “After all [the company] has said about how they value partners throughout the system, we refuse to accept zero immediate investment in baristas’ wages and no resolution of the hundreds of outstanding unfair labor practices. Union baristas know their value, and they’re not going to accept a proposal that doesn’t treat them as true partners.” As bargaining delegates note, strikes have been staged during disruptive, high-revenue times in the past (including Red Cup Day); as delegate Fatemeh Alhadjaboodi put it: “Nobody wants to strike. It’s a last resort, but [the company] has broken its promise to thousands of baristas and left us with no choice. In a year when [the company] invested so many millions in top executive talent, it has failed to present the baristas who make its company run with a viable economic proposal. This is just the beginning. We will do whatever it takes to get the company to honor the commitment it made to us in February.”" - Jaya Saxena

Google
5 Stars. Perfect cafe to enjoy your Summer Berry with Lemonade+ Dragon fruit! Beautiful mountain view, great summer drink with round raspberry "bursts". Respectful customer experience from staff whose genuine camaraderie makes this a happy break in the day! Near all Studios in Burbank CA.

Today me and my husband visited this store and he was trying to place his order and the young lady refused to fill it up his drink because we ordered it with no ice, and she said it is a policy from that particular store; also we requested stevia instead of sugar, and she said they were out of stock when obviously we saw stevia on the top of the desk. Finally she refused to help us, so we decided to go another Starbucks where we received an excellent service. What do you think?

Google
Very courteous and helpful staff, excellent brewed decaf coffee, not a pour over and not Americano. Atmosphere and location are clean and safe, parking was a bit of a challenge but always is in that area. Definitely will return, not our first time there, and certainly not our last!

Google
Slow service and they don't have some of the items that supposed to be on the menu place suck, to top off the retard white guy on the pic has an attitude problem and the Indian guy making the drinks as well on the pic when he handed me my drink he was spilling it all over and didn't wiped down the cup so my drink was all messy they should get rid off dum and dummer.

Google
Thoroughly love this location. 😀 The staff is sensational 👏🏾

Google
This Starbucks is on the smaller side so you may have trouble finding a table if it's busy. Otherwise, it is clean and has plenty of parking outside as it is in a Plaza area.

Katharine G

Google
This Starbucks 🌟 is Brewtiful with both indoor and outdoor seating. Very easy parking in the plaza. Thanks a latte ☕️

Google
Today was my first time ordering from this store and it was a remarkably pleasant experience. Fast, accurate, friendly, clean, delicious - checked all the boxes! I usually only tip $1 but today I left $5. Thank you coffee superheros!! "I'll be back"

Yelp
I was greeted when I walked in by two people behind the counter. I walked up and waited in line. The man who took my order made eye contact. We talked about the weather and asked how I was doing. Over the top experience I had with him. I ordered a cheese danish and it was warm and crunchy 5/5 I also ordered a venti iced quad vanilla latte and it's made perfect; perfection 5/5 The lobby is clean and the tables and chairs are comfortable 5/5 1200-1210 on 3rd of August 2025

Yelp
This Starbucks is living proof that incompetence can be a business model. I ordered two basic coffees. Nothing fancy, nothing difficult. After waiting nearly 20 minutes while four employees wandered around like headless chickens (only one actually making drinks), I finally asked about my order. The response? "Are you sure you ordered at the right store?" Yes, I'm sure -- I didn't accidentally wander into a Burger King and start yelling "venti latte." Then, as they processed my refund, the barista who was supposedly "working" suddenly announced, "Oh yeah, I just looked at your ticket -- it's been sitting here the whole time." Translation: they had my order the entire time and just didn't bother to make it. No apology. No urgency. Just blank stares and confusion. Watching this crew try to run a Starbucks is like watching sloths attempt synchronized swimming -- painfully slow and guaranteed to drown. And these are the people demanding $20 an hour? Please. At this rate, they should be paying customers hazard pay for the wasted time and blood pressure spike. Avoid this location unless you enjoy being ignored, gaslit, and robbed of both money and caffeine.

Yelp
So I spoke to Kim about an order that was incorrect and without hesitation she offered to remake the order, her customer service was top-tier professional efficient. The area was very clean when I walked in good music, playing beautiful ambience, Kim, and the rest of the Starbucks crew or the true definition of customer service not to be played with, even though Starbucks is on the ground I feel like I'm in first class when I walked in this location!! Thank you so much for all of your hard work Starbucks team and Kim. Please keep it up and if anyone is in the area, feel free to say hello there are all friendly.

Yelp
Cute merch on sale at half off for Christmas. Stopped in today to get an iced latte, had it topped with festive cold foam peppermint mocha. Seems like Starbucks is now down to only one sugar free syrup, vanilla. I hope they don't lose that one. Quiet and nice to relax on here. Fast service and friendly workers. A nice window seat view Alameda. Always great to stop here and Pavilions is next door to get groceries.

Yelp
The very bad Starbucks in the world that I've seen for hours, you'll make those who give one order, I don't advise anyone

Bibi R.

Yelp
I frequent this Starbucks more often than I probably should lol. But I seriously will drive out of my way to come to this particular location. I was traveling from New York last year and witnessed an employee, Josie, deal with a very arrogant and obnoxious customer (without reason). I was so amazed at their poise and composure during that incident. I really admired the level of professionalism and kindness that was maintained and demonstrated by Josie. I learned a lot from Josie that day! I'm back to CA for a few months this time. And my daily habit doesn't just include coffee, I am always looking for Josie. Josie's temperament and disposition is always welcoming and kind - and I never regret a purchase (or this coffee habit)- for that reason! Thank you, Josie! May you always encounter people as kind, and gracious and just genuinely good as yourself! See you, tomorrow -I hope :)

Yelp
No offense but I'd much rather support an independent business than a corporate giant. Endless Quest near Book Passage is a very worthy place with a great vibe.

Yelp
Kim was awesome!! Great energy!! Felt welcomed and my order was made with care! Made my day!

Yelp
I have no choice but to visit this Starbucks. The store on olive is under construction. Nonetheless I walked up & ordered with no problem. There was only one person a head of me but many others standing around waiting for their order. I assume the overflow was from the Starbucks on olive & they came to this store also. I did have a bit of a wait for my items & I wondered if It could be mobile order back up or the overflow from Olive location. Well I got my stuff just in time to race back to my office. Good luck with the crowds Starbucks!

Yelp
This Starbucks is a little different, employee wise than all of the other stores around it (Glendale, Burbank) in that it is very close to several movie studios; and therefore would be actors work here. To me that could be bad in that the "i'm just here to get a paycheck to pay my part of the rent on a place i share with 8 others" sense. On the good side, it means that most of the employees are animated and nice and certainly personal in that they can never know from where or from whom an acting job offer will come among the thousands of people that come here a week. It is kind of fun then for the most part to come here. Most of all because the service is fast, thorough and mostly expert. If you give the order taker some specific instructions on a drink order you can be sure most of the time that your order will be delivered quickly and with care. And so it was today. I came in at mid morning (so after the rush for work time) and as usual the physical plant both inside and out (too chilly to sit outside but sunny) are spotless. My order was a bit complicated and involved several drinks yet nothing came out amiss except for one. One drink i had re-made and got no guff for it which isn't always the case. What happened to the posted in all stores Starbucks sign which read: "We will always re-do your drink if it is at first not made to your liking" Or something to that effect. Most will not ask for a re-do as the whole process is a bit scary to them. For me? Nah...i mean i am paying almost 5-6 bucks for a Cappuccino with specific instructions attached and i expect it to be right. And yes i often get the stink-eye and even at times, some lip but i ignore that and only become more insistent. But to get back to the point; not much amiss here in this store which almost always been a pleasure to shop. Today was no different. I will be back here periodically when i am in the area. cheers!

Yelp
Ok.... This is probably the WORST Starbucks I've ever been too. The service is slow, it's not really air conditioned and the bathroom is DISGUSTING. Yeah not into it!

Jenny D.

Yelp
After giving this Starbucks multiple chances, making excuses for them as to why the food is cold, sandwiches disassembled, cold coffee when I asked for extra hot, frappes with no flavor I have come to the realization that they're just horrible.. very sad.. being that anyone that knows me knows I love my Starbucks. Maybe they need to be retrained on how to make drinks ‍ the ambiance is always hectic with people standing around waiting, the workers seem irritated to be there. Do Better Guys!!!

Lorena M.

Yelp
This place is amazing great customer service the staff always happy and smiling that love there jobs. They all need a lunch.
google avatar

Kyle L.

Yelp
Ugh, I needed to be in this store today. Such good energy from the staff! Truly kind people.
google avatar

Whitley C.

Yelp
There was a mix up with the Postmates website and I called into the store and was greeted by a very nice person named Eric. I let him know my concerns and he was very polite, made my order very quickly and rectified the situation. This man needs a raise!!
google avatar

W B.

Yelp
I mainly get the Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso and I know there's a lot of ice in the drink, but this is like the 5th time I end up paying $6 for a cup of ice. You'll see in the picture how much ice is left over after only a dozen sips of the drink. It's normally not like that. When I'm done with the drink I usually have about an inch of ice left. You'll see the line I drew where the ice usually is when I'm done. This is how I've been getting the drink lately. A whole venti of ice and very little drink. It's frustrating to never know how it'll turn out. Tired of paying $6 for ice and feel I shouldn't have to change up my drink because there's no congruency. ‍

Yelp
Probably the nicest workers here. Just be sure to check your mobile order, sometimes people take them. Hope the manager treats the workers well. They are hardworking people
google avatar

Oscar G.

Yelp
Good store. Staff friendly. Gets busy in the morning and lunch time but runs smoothly.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food nice workers who can quickly make your order. Very spacious. I would totally recommend if you need a drink in the morning
google avatar

Yelp
Went here to get a drink for a friend. I order Small frap, no whipped cream, and no caffeine, lemonade, and cake poppers. There served several people whom order before me and a whole pack of police offers and several more people after me. I went up and ask why my order was taking so long they said it was gunna be up rt away next up. They were real rude after I ask what the hold up was. I told them it was a crazy how I tipped them generously and got horrible service. I hate this place. Workers were unprofessional and sicly rude.
google avatar

Steph L.

Yelp
This Starbucks has the worst employees! So disrespectful and rude! You need better training on how to charge for your drinks and learn how to cater to the customers Whoever Aimee is needs better training she was so rude. I go to Starbucks every single morning and my charge is $3.95 period, I showed proof of receipts and she wanted to charge me double like how does that happen? If I show you proof of what I've been getting charged abandon you say it's wrong then you charge me what I've been paying and say that you will train your employees the correct way and that next time it will be more not sit and argue like I did something wrong. Customer service is dead and people should really think twice about this store, no wonder reviews are low!
google avatar

Alona I.

Yelp
Love this Starbucks, food and drinks are always delicious, staff is sooo friendly. And the barista with curly hair and a hat is very kind! :))
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
I have been going to this Starbucks for years, but the last couple times I have come in the service has gotten worse and worse. Today I go in 5 employees behind the counter nobody in line and I had to stand there and wait to be helped.

Brian B.

Yelp
I have ordered here 3 times and all 3 times the Frappuccino I ordered tasted more like ice. It was disgusting. It doesn't taste anywhere near what a Starbucks Frappuccino should taste like. This falls on management at this location. I am not the only one who has had this issue. I would recommend going to a different location.
google avatar

Farrukh S.

Yelp
friendly staff but the internet doesn't work. what's the point of a starbucks without WIFI. you know it's not the coffee.
google avatar

Natalie W.

Yelp
Never. Again. Let's start with today. I ordered a green tea. IT CAME OUT TO BE SOME HOT LEMON TEA. I need caffeine. Starbucks can't make tea. Last week my eggs came out 33 minutes late. Not to the fault of the worker barista but the MANAGER WHO WAS TALKING IN THE BACK ON HIS PHONE as everyone was flurrying around him flustered. And he DARED speak to the barista in front of me "what you didn't get her order?!" Wow. Awful. A time before that they entirely forgot my online order and I waited 20 minutes for it. Both of the latter times I was late to work. Now I'm just angry. Get new management or shut this place down. This is the worst Starbucks I have EVER seen.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Been coming here on and off, considering I've had 2 different jobs walking distance to this location. For the most part, it's alright. There have been a handful of instances where my drink was incorrect, with one of the times having to wait a very long time for it to get resolved. Mobile ordering has also been mostly fine, with a few snags. It's busy at random times. But overall, the staff has been kind.
google avatar

Anika S.

Yelp
We've been going to this particular Starbucks for years, working and now living nearby, and we think this one is the nicest in all of Burbank. For me, it's the ambiance, along with some healthy drinks & food choices that makes me want to frequent a particular coffee shop - where I can talk to my husband or use iPad and phone in a friendly cheerful atmosphere with toned-down relaxing music while getting energized with a house drink and tasty sandwich. Too much to ask for in mostly all other Burbank Starbucks with jittery loud music, strange odors and freezing AC and understaffed? In this location, you'll get all that you need, best choices on Starbucks menu, fine-tuned music, nice seating after some recent rearrangement, solid WiFi, and the fastest and precise service by the most friendly, personable and energetic employees on any of their fast rotating shifts. We usually order Hot Chai Latte with 1 pump of syrup only and steamed soy milk, Spinach-Feta Cheese wraps and/or Roasted Turkey & Dill Havarti cheese w/arugula fresh multigrain sandwich (turkey is raised without antibiotics) or Sprouted multigrain bagel, each grilled or toasted. And never have they made a mistake on my order. All employees are genuinely helpful, especially Destiny will go out of her way to make you feel welcome! Don't be concerned at waiting in a line here - they won't waste your time, they'll get additional staff working in the kitchen to promptly complete all orders, super efficient creative teamwork!
google avatar

Lilit A.

Yelp
Ordered from Uber Eats and they only packed half my order for pick -up. I called the store and the rep was very rude and told me "sorry I'm busy working and there's nothing I can do now, your other drinks are sitting here and I can't get in contact with the Uber driver, call Starbucks customer care and get a coupon for a free drink next time." Unprofessional and unacceptable answer!

Rocio M.

Yelp
I've been to this Starbucks more than a few times, different times of the day in fact. I always get great customer service, I want to say thank you to Chris for helping retrieve my first merchandise from my points, he was smiling the entire time. He needs recognition
google avatar

James Y.

Yelp
Great barista here. He said hello as he was making my drink. He also confirmed my drink order that it was to be sweetened. It is a smaller location but enough tables inside and outside to do some work.
google avatar

Melissa E.

Yelp
They've got serious problems now! Too many employees doing little, just having a good time, keeping AC on the lowest for their own comfort, loud music to entertain themselves and rude to sit-down customers who come for coffee and work on laptops and other gadgets... The mean guy acting like a manager on afternoon and evening shifts is the worst, really arrogant, wears lots of button badges on his black cap, big glasses, but never wears a name tag. Whoever he is, he shouldn't manage or boss other employees or customers, demonstrating his obnoxious attitude and temper. I used to like sitting here and get something to eat also. Now I just grab my drink and go!
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Read the ENTIRE mobile order sticker, Jaime!!! Ordered a blueberry scone and peppermint gum. Received a blueberry muffin and mints. No apologies. Just that "turn your face" avoidance thing like a bad junior high break up....‍ The difference between meh customer service and great customer service is accountability. Mistakes happen. Cold disengagement doesn't have to.

m p.

Yelp
Ok been going here for years. I ordered thru the app.. Got my drink then I asked if I can just get a cup of ice water and she had me wait in line "you have to order that thru the register" wttfffff ? U rite there. Major fail !
google avatar

Martina J.

Yelp
The staff at this Starbucks is friendly and accommodating. If you don't like a drink they have make a whole new one, no problem. The parking lot in front of this Starbucks is tight & this is a busy location. So if you're in a hurry, mobile order.
google avatar

Princess G.

Yelp
Update-- My drinks have improved. The employees are always welcoming and super friendly.

Michael P.

Yelp
Gibson is the man. He was very attentive and helpful while still making other drinks. Great guy

Diego C.

Yelp
Short staffed. Good luck getting their attention when you pick up orders, they'll just stand there and pretend you don't exist.

Yuli K.

Yelp
I love this Starbucks and MOST of the employees are really cool but there are a few, one in particular with absolutely ZERO customer service ability and no personality whatsoever is Judy. Waiting at the counter for someone to come take my order and Judy walks over... no hello, no hi, no words at all, she just stands there like a speedbump looking seemingly upset that she has to actually do some work. Next person same thing.... and it doesn't stop here, she not only sucks behind the counter but is actually worse when it comes to making coffee... on the few occasions when this individual has made my drink it always turns out worse that when anyone else does it... how can someone be that bad at all aspects of their job? I think she'd be great as a DMV employee as she already has the attitude and the DMV doesn't require you to be particularly good at anything other than having a massive attitude for no reason... I see a match made in heaven. Point of this ... if you come in and get Judy taking your order be prepared for an attitude... if she's making the coffee/drinks that day just leave and come back when Heather or virtually anyone else is on.
google avatar

Elann C.

Yelp
This Starbucks is a little more laid back without all the noise, blaring music, and the employees here are nice and friendly. I can actually study here or read a good book with my favorite beverage. As a Burbank resident, this is my go-to Starbucks. Service is excellent. The manager here, Travis, is a wonderful manager. Store is always clean and organized. Food and service is reliable and consistently great.
google avatar

Patti M.

Yelp
I love this Starbucks, drinks & food are always consistently amazing. However, they have customers that smoke on the patio and very close by. Close enough that the smoke seeps in through the front door along with infiltrating the patio. There is also a panhandling problem and an issue with at least one customer who thinks they own the place ... saving seats, etc. I believe Starbucks is apprehensive to deal with these types of customers because of what happened a couple of years ago. Because of this one customer I'll never return. It's disappointing that one person, that Starbucks is afraid to confront, ruins it for others.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Came here to grab a coffee and study on a Tuesday night. The tables are tiny and the space feels cramped. The lights outside shine through the windows and right into your eyes. Ordered two lattes and they both tasted awful and burnt. Just as we were thinking about staying the air conditioning kicked on when it was already freezing, and that was it. I might try this location again - but I'll probably avoid it.
google avatar

Sal M.

Yelp
Quiet & Nice location to drink & talk over a cold or hot drink. Plenty of parking. Staff is polite and quick to complete your order. Hope to return to this location in the near future.
google avatar

Sera C.

Yelp
I come here about once a week on my way to my volunteer work. The staff is generally pretty nice although they always seem really harassed/frenzied at 7 AM on a Saturday morning. They do a good job on my drink, never had to return it. The parking lot sucks, but that isn't their fault.
google avatar

Angelia C.

Yelp
I come into the store often and hope for a different interaction every time. I do not like coming here but it is close to work. The partners here are very cold, do not make eye contact and do not make you feel welcome at all. Thier is a certain standard that you expect from Starbucks considering the price you pay, the expected quality of the product and the culture it represents. Management should really talk to the baristas about making customer feel valued. Maybe a smile would improve the overall experience but it seems they cannot do that. I am very disappointment by the lack of community and warmth that this store gives out. Very poor customer service and no desire in making customers happy.
google avatar

Cesar O.

Yelp
These guys are aces. Talk about a team effort these guys make it happen! I've been a regular to this location especially my friend that comes along with me or meets me there. Would like to pay a thank you forward. Keep up the great work"

Angela C.

Yelp
I don't have anything against Starbucks, in fact, generally I love Starbucks. However, this specific location is just a disgrace to the company. My friend and I had planned on having a nice and enjoyable morning by stopping and splurging on our favorites. However, everything we ordered was crafted incorrectly. I ordered a venti pink drink w no strawberry inclusions.....and what did I get? Extra strawberry inclusions. My friend ordered a venti mango dragonfruit, no water light ice. What stud SHE GET?? A mango dragonfruit with EXTRA WATER, EXTRA ICE! Are you kidding?! I was so over it at that point that I didn't even say anything to them about it. They knew in their hearts they had messed up our drinks and that makes me sick. Never going back.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Good service with a nice comfy ambiance. Lots of natural light for you readers out there and plenty of extra parking towards the Pavilions side. It's one of my more liked Starbucks but unfortunately I'm not around here too often. It's a winner in my book!
google avatar

Trueman B.

Yelp
Most of workers are very nice here. In a previous review, I wrote some nasty things about Curry Anne (is that her name?) based on something I heard she said about me to another customer -- this ended up being completely made-up (person who told me admitted it). I can't explain how bad I feel, but I have learned more to not jump to judgement on others. Along with Curry Anne, Chanel, Jaime, Anthony and others work very hard in order to make customers feel comfortable. They seem organized, and the line goes through pretty fast. They have really improved with online orders, which are now separated from the rest.
