Heat Waves Make Restaurant Kitchens Unsafe. Workers Are Fighting Back. | Eater

"Employees at a Houston coffee shop staged a strike after months of a malfunctioning air conditioner left staff working in roughly 80–85°F conditions while management allegedly delayed repairs. The walkout prompted a prompt fix of the unit, underscoring how collective action can force immediate safety responses; organizers are using the incident as leverage in broader bargaining to establish universal safety standards for extreme heat. The company stated it routinely reviews store conditions and acts where partner well-being is jeopardized." - Frida Garza

Since it's a big Starbucks the place was full and pretty loud. If you want to study here, you gotta quickly grab a space. Overall the environment was nice and service was super friendly.

Google
Great late-night spot! This Starbucks stays open late, making it perfect for a late coffee run. The cashier was very kind and welcoming, providing excellent service. Definitely a great place to relax and enjoy a drink

Google
Edit: I wanted to include photos of the drink I was given at this Starbucks vs at another Houston Starbucks. (Left is what I’m used to) (Right is what I was given at this Starbucks) Fallon couldn’t give a receipt for returning an item. I’ve never had that issue at any Starbucks before. Extremely passive aggressive and unhelpful.

Google
A cool Starbucks. The service was fast, the store was clean and had a nice ambient noise level for studying. It's nice that it is open so late. My only complaint with Starbucks is the prices of the food items, but this is consistent across all locations and is not really commentary on this place in specific.

Google
I usually have a good experiences at this location. However today the Almond Milk Iced Latte gave me severe diarrhea… I don’t know if it was because they accidentally used dairy milk (I’m lactose intolerant) or maybe their almond milk went bad, but I definitely know it was the drink today that gave me diarrhea :(

Jin L.

Google
Kinda disappointed with the lack of cleanliness at this Starbucks. You would think they would keep it up since it's in the heart of the galleria. Coffee was ok, nothing special, the employees made it feel like they were doing you a favor by serving you and taking your money. It was cool to see so many people working at their computers. The homeless guys who shared our community table was chill. Didn't bother anyone and just smiled

Google
I come to location almost every single night and everyone is always so nice but recently I think they have some new employees I have never seen before. There’s one in particular… Pigtails was very rude to me for no reason and I regret giving her tips.

Google
Last couple of times I went the service was very argumentative. Had to argue to get my mobile orders, and never got my food, despite using my points in the app. It shouldn't be like that. Company didn't even reimburse me, no follow up call, nothing.. very tense environment her at night as well. Not welcoming..

Yelp
After a 5:30 AM workout and a long workday ahead, the iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso--whew, that's a mouthful--was exactly what I needed to get through the morning. It's one of the new summer items, and it did not disappoint. As always, I avoided the long drive thru line by ordering inside. As expected, the store was nearly empty that early, so service was quick. I ordered a venti (definitely more than I needed), but it powered me through a productive day. I asked the barista whether this drink was sweeter than the horchata version, and they said the oat milk one was. To me, it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet at all, which made it easy to sip throughout the morning. This particular Starbucks is spacious, modern, and beautifully designed, with warm wooden tables, moody lighting, and vibrant, nature-inspired wall art that gives the space personality. I especially loved the colorful floral and jungle prints that made it feel a little more personal than your average chain café. What makes it even better is how quiet and well-kept it is (ideal for anyone looking to study, plan, or just reset early in the morning or late at night). There are plenty of seating options, from cozy two-tops to larger group tables and even some comfy bench seating with a view of the windows. It's also open late, which isn't always easy to find in Houston. Whether you're starting the day with a jolt of caffeine or need a calm, well-lit place to get focused, this Starbucks gives you space, consistency, and the ambiance to stay productive.

Yelp
I've been coming to this location since they are open late for studying. Today the customer service was top notch and truly made my birthday that much better!

Yelp
What can I say about Starbucks that hasn't already been said? We all know the coffee behemoth well. I'm not a coffee drinker but I do like that they have a good number of tea/fruity options. And I also like that they offer free WiFi. Starbucks has always been a nice spot to study or work remotely although I personally prefer local coffee shops so I can support local. This location is in a prime area: super close to The Galleria mall. That means a lot of foot traffic. They're connected to Jamba Juice and there's plenty of parking though it can get busy. Compared to other locations, this is on the larger side. Plenty of seating and the typical decor you find at other locations.

Yelp
And just like that, this location is back to being terrible again. My previous reviews going back 10 years were removed by yelp because admittedly, there was some colorful language in there, but they were 100% true. It's kind of odd that only the negative reviews were targeted and even to myself as a yelp elite who always defends yelp, that seems pretty sketchy. I really wonder who reported and who reviewed those and marked them for removal. A quick background since the old reviews aren't there anymore: This location is right in the middle of the Uptown/Galleria area and used to be open 24 hours back in the "Club Starbucks" days and as such, it was always packed with people from all walks of life- from panhandlers, homeless people pretty much living in there, pyramid scheme people holding their meetings there, intoxicated night club people coming to sober up, College students using it as their private study booth, people from non-alcohol drinking cultures who would gather there like it was a social club with fancy cars parked in the front...you name it, it was there. Most of the time, all the different characters somehow got along but I had seen a few fights break out in there too so it was GREAT for people watching while you studied as it made you feel like you were still out in the world but could still get your work done. Since those days, they remodeled the location several times in order to open it up but I think it's made it worse each time. Now it's just dark and uninviting. All of that could be forgiven if service was good but this location has always had terrible service. I guess one of the management must have been around when they reopened it last time because it got slightly better but my last couple of visits here have been pretty bad. In my last visit, there was nobody in line but i still waited 5 minutes before someone even acknowledged I was there. I wasn't asked what size drink I wanted and they just assumed. My order was just green iced tea so it wasn't overly complicated but it took a good 15 minutes to get it. Meanwhile there was another gentleman ahead of me who wanted coffee beans and he had been there for about 30 minutes and was politely reminding them that he had another place to be and at the end of the day, had to leave empty handed. Just as I finally got my drink and sat down and was going to get a little work done, a panhandler kept pestering me for money or to buy him a couple of croissants. Then he moved to the next table and pestering another customer. All this in full view of the staff but they all looked like they had given up so I decided to just pack up and go and once again another panhandler approached me aggressively asking for money and was standing between me and my car door. What a fun afternoon! I'm sure I'll forget how terrible this place is and come back again later and then be reminded.

Yelp
Please teach your employees how can say Hello and thank you. Girl who handed out my drinks just stare but no speaking not greeting and no thanking. I wont return this location because of her.

Richard H.

Yelp
Poor customer service. Order not prepared correctly. Service and food not good here.

Yelp
The beverages are awesome and tingling to the cells. One sip and you can feel the power. The service here is super friendly and they remember not only your name but your option of choice as well. The ambiance is right on point. Today was 80's music. Almost went home and watch the Breakfast club or Weird Science.

Yelp
Iced coffee in Houston, Texas... It's quite humid in Texas especially after a shopping adventure! My goal was to use my $10 coupon at DSW, then go to a Starbucks. Imagine my surprise when I saw this Starbucks across the same parking lot as DSW!!! So happy!!! This location is really spacious! There were several tables and some sofas where customers were chatting and doing work on laptops. It seemed like a calm environment, so, I took a seat at a high top and enjoyed my tall iced coffee with coconut milk and two stevia packets! (Thanks, Sue L., for my new favorite beverage!) The air conditioning was a welcomed experience! Next time I go shopping in the area, I'll remember to come to this shop. The cashier was very sweet and efficient - especially when she remembered what I had originally ordered when I asked for a free refill!

Theresa J.

Yelp
Great first time visiting this location. The barista named April had my drink on point. I needed that pick me up, Thank You! I had to get on that crazy freeway so I needed to be wide awoke for those crazy drivers. It was worth waiting 5 extra minutes from pick up time! This location closes at 2:30 am. This a very busy location. They had 4 Barista thas night. Only thing i didn't see is interaction of conversations with barista & customers. Only April & I made that connection.

Yelp
THE WORSE Starbucks I've ever been to. Rudest staff consistently & you can tell the management does not care base on how their employees work & how they treat customers. They can't even make the drinks right. Don't waste your time + money + energy to deal with these people.
google avatar

Yelp
Ollie was so nice and very friendly. Stopped by to get my birthday Mocha Frap. Thanks Ollie for your service.

Yelp
Welcome to the Galleria late night flop house. Bikers in the parking lot and homeless people everywhere inside. No place to sit because they're parking their stuff at tables. Get your drink and get out.

Yelp
Georgia is the BEST!!!! Sis taught me a new lesson in the Starbucks world. When ordering a Tall or a Grande ask for your order to be placed in a cup that's one size up. I absolutely love her forever for this tip. Because I always ask for my remains in a separate cup. Georgia tip saves Starbucks on their inventory and myself from carrying two cups. Much respect for this lady. I also invested in a reusable flatware which is perfect for a lady like me. Which I won't be embarrassed pulling this perfect dainty set out while dining. The set rest inside of personalized holder that closes out to a full size napkin. Since I don't eat off public flatware, for my own safety and sanity-reasons. Plus I can use this as my camping mess kit! Sweet deal!!! And awesome find at Gallo Starbucks.

Yelp
If you are going to lock your restrooms, let them be something that someone would want to be in. The funk hit me before the light came on. Trash all over the floor.
google avatar

Yelp
LOBBY closes at 12AM not 2am had to find out the hard way. I think drive thru closes at 2am. My drink took a while. Nice inside though.
google avatar

Hannah F.

Yelp
Extremely long lines and wait times. The drive through line is always wrapped around the building and overflowing into the adjacent parking lot. This being the case, I thought I would take a chance and place my order inside. I ordered basically the most basic drink you can order - tall iced coffee with soy milk. Twenty five (25!!) minutes later and my drink still wasn't ready. I ended up walking out without getting it because a basic iced coffee is not worth losing close to half an hour of your life. I will give them credit that the baristas move fast but the drink prep space and number of employees simply isn't enough to keep up with the traffic. Don't waste your time. If you're craving Starbucks, go to another location. I promise your drink will taste almost exactly the same.

Yelp
I had a late night sweet tooth and had to have a Pumpkin Spice Frapp. Luckily, this is the one 24-hour Starbucks in the city. Well, now due to the pandemic, they close three hours per day. New hours: 5am-2am I had to wait behind about twenty cars, but didn't mind. I chit-chatted away on my phone to pass the time. This is the second pumpkin spice drink I've had at a Starbucks this week (the other was at a different location) and it was good, but didn't do what it used to for me in years past. Maybe I outgrew it? I love the hours at this location. The drink issue wasn't their fault. I just lost that lovin' feelin' for it. :(

Yelp
Well they are rocking things here. Tony took my order and got it done right. Great thing about this location is that the window cashiers are always friendly. I am unsure why they have such low scores. Matt greeted me when I arrived at the window and made small chit chat while I was waiting for our coffees. Oh side note Happy Birthday Matt!!!! Be sure to post what your girlfriend had in store for you....(The Spanish guy in the black Lexus F Sport). Anyways this is my coffee spot and will always be. As long as Matt and Tony are there. Cheers

Zarina B.

Yelp
what an @ss. I go to Starbucks daily, twice a day. $5 a day for 20 years. do the math. so I guess it's the manager. a well dressed middle-aged black guy. I got an iced coffee in the drive thru. drank it and came in a asked for refill and bagel with my membership. he then questions me where I bought the first coffee and my store doesnt get credit for the sale of the first coffee in order to get refill. show me the sticker on your cup. jack@ss. I will not patronize this store anymore and go to the one by Walmarts. how rude to question a customer and tell them you don't get credit for the sale so no refill. so demeaning make me prove I bought the coffee their.

Zenab C.

Yelp
The young lady that was working was out of line. For description purposes: African American dreads She seemed overwhelmed with the new hires. And despite my orders being made incorrectly all week long. I hadn't complained up until this point. 1.) She approached me by opening the window and asking me, "What's good? And then continues and says, What's your problem?" 2.) Since I was in utter shock I no longer felt I could trust her with my drink from how unprofessional she spoke with me. To make things worse she takes the drink back which goes against basic protocol and that speaks volumes. 3.) I am watching her at this point. Not even 3 seconds go by and hands me back the drink. Deliberately Implying that she isn't going to fix anything? So, I told her that she didn't fix the drink and she wants to argue that she did. I requested for her to fix it and she refuses the service of fixing it. At this point it's getting ridiculous for me and I get my refund. If you can't even accommodate for me as a regular customer what makes you think you'd keep my business.

Yelp
There are so many Starbucks that are open in so many neighborhoods.. what will make you stand out? The customer experience. This location needs to do much much better.
google avatar

Annie A.

Yelp
We love this location and its friendly service. Everyone is very nice and working so professionally during a pandemic, and that's all we can do try our best to stay safe and healthy. As I mentioned, everyone is amiable at this location. Still, of course, we all usually talk or order at the cash register, so these people are the one who represents the company or the location. So we met Kenyada (sorry if I misspelled ) she is very friendly and very professional with long orders. We love to go back and enjoy outdoor seating. Good thing they have the drive-through, too, so that's makes it very convenient for everyone. This location is spotless and safe. Highly recommended

Yelp
What a major difference in both service and overall product quality that I've seen since my last visit to this location! While this remains as the largest and busiest in all of the city, this Starbucks location seems to be the go-to place for all of the Post Oak-locals to get their daily fix at. In addition, this location is a pretty decent spot for impromptu business meetings, particularly in the early morning hours. You'll still see a line to the door here, but that seems to go with the territory. Will certainly be back.

Aurora O.

Yelp
terrible i paid extra for them to make my drink incorrectly twice. I finally just took what they were giving me because they couldn't figure it out. Tell me why my cup wasn't even filled when I ordered it so it could all fit. Who ever was making the cold foam was making it bitter, hot, and runny. paying $9-$10 for one drink and for their cold supplies to be hot terrible. I just want quaLott for what I'm paying.
google avatar

Thanh-Liem L.

Yelp
I wish the manager, Aaryanna, and other employees could be nicer. They are just ridiculously rude. I ordered 2 espresso shots, adding milk via mobile order. There was hardly any milk in my drink and when I asked to have some more milk, they refused, saying I would have to pay separately to have milk added in there. I had ordered this drink multiple times before and every time I received an abundant amount of milk at other Starbucks (needless to say, Starbucks used to have buckets of milk or cream for customers out at the sugars and napkins station). When I expressed that to the manager, Aaryanna ,she gave a terrible attitude as if I was there to beg for coffee. If she could handle it nicer and more professionally, I would understand and pay but the way she acted is outrageous. I asked for her last name to escalate to company CSR as there was no one else there that I could talk to but she refused to provide the information. It' not about the milk, it's about the customer service. I guess Starbucks has changed their management and their employees are not happy working there anymore? I heard Aaryanna said something about me and laughed with the other crews when I walked away that I wanted to go back and confront her but I'd rather save myself sometimes and spend that to report to the corporate. They should care what the customers are dealing with if they still want a good image of the company. Congratulations Starbucks, your branch manager saved you FEW OUNCES of milk. What an accomplishment! I'll make sure to spread this story to my group of friends and coworkers, so we can anticipate how we will be treated.

Jen S.

Yelp
"Lou" said the seasonal pastries are down with when we asked for a sugar plum danish, we knew he was lying because it's being advertised on the drive thru and on the mobile app is stated available which is why we drive all the way to this location, most likely he lied about his name but he's the white guy with an attitude with a condescending tone, I'm sure y'all know who it is once y'all encounter "him" do better "Lou"
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
Only gets 3 stars because it's open 24 hours. High turnover and each new person seems to not understand how to make drinks. It's convenient but that's about it. Stick with the coffee if you come here.
google avatar

Meg S.

Yelp
Michael is the kindest and even remembered us by name. We aren't from here but his hospitality made us feel like we were! We will be back!
google avatar

Betzy R.

Yelp
Bad customer service everyone that works there has a bad attitude specially the manager and one of the guys at the drive through name DAVID he's the rudest and they never made my drink properly and I had to pay twice because they didn't want to remake
google avatar

Carl S.

Yelp
Perfect. An excellent space to rest, have a hot drink in a totally calm and pleasant environment. I love the attention that makes me make the effort to look for them wherever I am, since with the union of their qualities they will achieve my tranquility and inner peace.
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
This place is crazy packed. People everywhere-line almost out to the door. The good news is they had two busy and active registers. The restrooms were NASTY. Instead of filling the soap dispenser they put a large bottle out. The restroom smelled pissy. I washed my hands however I love paper towels so I went out to the the barista area and there were no napkins- all of the dispensers were empty. And the area was not kept at all. Service was great- the cashier associate got my order in and back to my very wuic I had hot chocolate (was not that good). It has been better. I also ordered the oatmeal and it was good( I only wished that the water was hotter for the oatmeal. ) This visit was a let down...
google avatar

Karen 2.

Yelp
wouldn't recommend starbucks overall but this location kinda bends the truth on their hours since they shut down the inside and only have drive thru late night

Amber S.

Yelp
Adrian the manager didn't want to replace my coffee after I requested oat milk instead of regular milk didn't offer any kind of resolution and told me rudely to head out. Starbucks is too expensive for their workers to not have common courtesy.
google avatar

Ms Ruby O.

Yelp
I'm sure one of the busiest locations in area. Everyone' works well Together here so the wAit is seldom long
google avatar

Barret L.

Yelp
This is a trusty, tried, and true Starbucks location in the city that is 24 hours - so you can get your fix any time of the day or night. I have never been here when it is not busy, no matter the hour. Always a long line in the drive thru, but they know what they are doing and the drinks taste pretty great.
google avatar

Christopher R.

Yelp
It's great that you can get the same drinks and atmosphere at almost every Starbucks. My internet was down the other day and I needed a place to work that had internet. Since I work from home having the internet down is a big deal. I was able to pack up my laptop, order a iced which chocolate mocha with no whip cream and get to work. This is one of the largest locations I have been to. They have power outlets. Large tables, small tables, long tables and some outside seating. There is some construction going on around the store but it wasn't a bother at all. There is a drive through too. The location is open 24 hours as well. The employees are nice and it didn't take long to get my coffee. I can see myself come to this location from time to time if I need a change of scenery or if my internet goes down again. :P Starbucks is a life saver though. Thank you for the free WiFi and a place to hang out!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst Starbucks I've been to in years. I wanted to get a little bit of work done here and I found the environment completely inhospitable. First problem, you have to bend your neck into a difficult position to see the power strip that is mounted under the table. Second problem, the first power strip I tried was dead. More bending. Third and worst problem, the NOISE in here was absurd. One cracked speaker that was right overhead buzzing at me. And then every single time someone moved their chair, it made a horrendous scraping sound with the wood legs on the concrete floor. Impossible to get any sort of focus. I was here for all of five minutes and just left. There is no peace in this very large Starbucks.
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Probably one of the slowest Starbucks I have ever been in. I have been in the store many times 4 employees are huddled near the drive through window not doing anything (yet the car line is 20 cars deep) and they only have 1 person getting orders inside the store. On the weekends the store is packed and I have to wait 20-30 minutes after ordering something from the app to pick up. This is sad because given it is in a prime spot you would think they would want quick service.
google avatar

Destinee C.

Yelp
So Starbucks is Starbucks. They're pretty much all the same. However, I was taken care of by a beautiful human named Miriam & her kindness and hospitality deserve all the recognition. She actually made my entire night by being so so kind to me & im so thankful for her.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
This Starbucks gets a bad reputation for understandable reasons: they have invested heavily in the real estate to hustle up a Primo Paul corner at Westheimer and Post Oak across from the Gal. All the bling bling went into the real estate, nothing else. At this franchise they literally don't give a fuck about you as a customer because at such a high volume/notorious/Fergie-glamorous intersection you as a customer are as fungible as Lil Wayne mixtapes because he can only rhyme one word over one beat so many different times. Swiggity swag, what's in the bag? A one star review. It is always so busy you need to park a great distance away. This offends me as a Screwstonian because we are not a walking people. There are too many goddamn fellow patrons at all times. This offends my inner tumblrina because crowds of people are no bueno. People? No thanks fam. None of the scarce few empty tables are ever wiped down. This offends my khaki pants because I need to sit down at these trash tier tables and some of the empty tables look and/or smell like there was some definite watersports shenanigans going on around here - which explains why everyone else and their mother passed on sitting at that table, leaving it one of the two empty ones for you to choose from. The other empty one? Don't ask what's wrong with her brah, you don't want to know. Waiting in line, usually all the way to the door and often out through the door, there is somehow trash accumulating on the floor underneath you which is extremely disgusting for a Starbucks that is usually slightly more successful at being less garbage tier than grabbing coffee at the truck stop when you need to wash your mouth out before catching the next hitchhiking opportunity through Alabama. This Starbucks floor looks worse than a bus stop in Detroit where habitual litterers that love messing with Texas often stop in, see the mess, produce a single dramatic tear, dramatically whisper "Damn, someone's already done this bitch" and then they continue on to a Shoney's or somewhere else with an interior more in need of a good littering of trash. There is literally nothing redeeming about this Starbucks experience except for my favorite thing to do in Pasadena - which is to get the fuck out of there. One star is generous - people like Talia Jane can't pay their rent with one star and hopefully you can't either. Because as disgusting as the inside is here, we might as well move one of the titty bars from the Richmond Strip here to this intersection so I can get some reasonably priced chicken wings and throw the refuse on the floor - since we can do that at the titty bar - but somehow that should not be appropriate on the floor of a Starbucks. Until it was for some guy who thought he could do that. Which is part of Chomsky's overall discussion of the breakdown of America which is leading to our next president, @realDonaldTrump.

Yelp
Worst. Starbucks.Ever. If the Starbucks app says the store is open, don't trust it. If the item you select is showing in stock at the store, don't believe it. I avoid this Starbucks like the plague because it never fails to disappoint. EVERY time I have to go to this particular Starbucks, the item I ordered through the app is out of stock, OR I cannot pick up my mobile order because despite them have already accepted my order and payment through the app, they are unable to serve me because they decided to close early That night. And when I ask why the app shows the store is open (or Item in stock), they reply that the manager forgot to update the app. Every single time. I ask if they can refund me, and they tell me to contact customer service. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

Yelp
Quick drive-thru! Didnt have time to go in but this place looked huge! (Houston, of course!) KELYLE is the bomb!! He took our order and served us with personality!! KELYLE! HIGH FIVE at the drive thru b/c I said his name right! Thank you and keep it up, Kelyle and these STARS will add up on this Starbuck's Yelp page!

Yelp
Wonderland is the rudest employee at this store. Ordered curbside. Sat in parking lot for an hour! I went inside, order was incorrect, went back outside, order never came! I called the store and she said she would not come outside! This location is absolutely horrible and does not believe in customer service!
google avatar

Ihab E.

Yelp
I was here today and i asked for a cappuccino and the service was bad specially this lady over there her name is Taylor she was so rude never come back here

Killerbee N.

Yelp
The drive thru staff was immature and rude. They also need to learn how to turn their mic off becuase we can here you laughing at us and talking about us. It was an unpleasant experience

Jayla M.

Yelp
Refresher courses on how to make signature drinks is needed because I get the same drink every time and it does not ever taste correct or the same

Yelp
I have no complaints to add about this location, that hasn't already been addressed by some of the yelpers below. Due to its location, it is almost always packed. For some reason I've been lucking out recently and getting there with either no line in the store, or a few cars in front of me in the drive thru. I love the fact that I can order and pay for my drink from home and pick it up once I get there. This is one of the few locations that allows that feature and it definitely beats standing in line. I ordered and saw the long drive thru line fully or the morning coffee fiends, so I just parked really quickly and was in and out in less than 5 minutes. The staff are usually pleasant, and try their best to provide good service. I'd recommend trying it out during off-peak times, don't give up on this location yet.
google avatar

Gregg P.

Yelp
Wow. Totally remodeled. Looks awesome. Nice place to hang as you wait for this crappy place to get you your order. New digs. Same crappy service. I am just shocked how horrible it is. And the consistency of their crappy service has to be admired. I have said it before. You really have to work hard to be this crappy!!

Yelp
Biggest Starbucks I've been to. They have ample amount of seatings to get your studying on or whatever. Coffee and service is also great. Bring a jacket because it's usually pretty cold. Also they are open for dine in atm.
