Workers at a Minneapolis Starbucks Are on Strike | Eater Twin Cities

"On August 1, workers at a Cedar Avenue Starbucks staged a two-day strike — having been on the picket line since Sunday with “Fair Wages for Fair Work” signs, blasting music, and receiving honks of support — to protest staffing cuts, unilateral schedule changes, and management’s refusal to bargain following the store’s successful unionization in May. Emily Mahoney, a barista, says the store has faced staffing cuts and unilateral changes since organizing, that management ignored months-old bargaining and responded only with a dismissive message before going essentially radio silent, and that the strike is meant to show workers are united and willing to escalate if necessary. Workers also say management moved opening and closing times a half hour later — a unilateral change they view as a power play and a violation of federal labor law — and have filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the NLRB. Barista Rosita Montes-Lopez describes chronic understaffing, noting the drive-thru should typically have two people but often has only one, forcing staff to take orders, process payments, hand out orders, and even make drinks, which she says makes daily operations stressful and undermines basic functioning." - Justine Jones

Danny del Prado’s New Restaurant Macanda Opens in Wayzata This Summer | Eater Twin Cities

"I read that workers at a Cedar Avenue Starbucks in Minneapolis voted 11 to 3 to unionize, making it Minnesota’s second Starbucks to successfully unionize amid a wider Starbucks unionization wave that has seen more than 200 stores seek recognition nationwide." - Justine Jones

In Historic Vote, St. Paul Starbucks Is Minnesota’s First to Unionize | Eater Twin Cities

"At a Cedar Avenue Starbucks that was among the first two to begin union organizing, I heard worker Kasey Copeland say the company’s progressive branding — which attracts employees who care about movements like Black Lives Matter and the queer community — is now being put to the test by the organizing effort; that store’s election results were scheduled to be announced May 2. Copeland and others are pushing to codify store policies so managers can’t unilaterally deny breaks or schedule protections, and Copeland described previously working at a store where she simply didn’t receive her breaks, underscoring the kind of managerial discretion workers want fixed." - Justine Jones

The girl with the hijabi at the register seemed to have no enthusiasm while taking my order and ended up making my order wrong by making 1 out of 3 Frappuccinos to be hot instead of blended… I’m just saying she wouldn’t have gotten it wrong if she would’ve had more charisma but the drinks were good.

Google
BEWARE OF MOLDLY FOOD. I wait an absurd amount of time in the drive-thru (I’m talking 15 minutes when only 2 cars are ahead of me). And even worse, I bring my dog with me, order a pup cup and notice the dog treat they put in there was covered with green fuzzy mold! I get these treats often so I know what normal looks like. I literally handed it back to the employee while informing her. I regret not taking a photo. This was my last straw at this location. It’s painfully slow all the time, and now they are handing out rancid food to make my fur baby sick. I’m so happy I caught that before I fed it to her. My visit was 9/25/25 around 4:20pm. Umm, health department?? It’s this one.

Onestray C.

Google
Zero stars, really. I didn't know you could screw up an iced latte w/oatmilk, but this location said, "Challenge accepted!" The iced latte literally smelled bad. It stunk like B.O.. Rotted milk, perhaps. Anyone check expiration dates?? I didn't drink it, of course. I left it on the table. Just awful. Thankfull, there's a Caribou Coffee next door. Makes me wonder how hygienic the kids working at this Starbucks are.

Joshua W.

Google
Can I please have some coffee with my $6 ice? When I ask for a splash, or a small amount of sweet cream, do you actually listen? Because it doesn’t seem like it since you never get it right and literally give me an entire cup of sweet cream with a splash of nitro coffee. And you get mad when we’re burnt out on tipping and don’t tip you. Do better.

Tan C.

Google
I accidentally sent two mobile orders to the wrong Starbucks—13 miles down the same street! But this Apple Valley location kindly fulfilled them without hassle or charge. Incredible service—thank you!

Chad N.

Google
Slowest and rudest location in the city. Employees would rather stand around and talk than work. On my latest visit, it took them over 45 minutes to make a 2-coffee order and refused to cancel or refund the order when I couldn't waste more time waiting for them to get to it. Drive thru gets full priority, while app and in-store orders are ignored.

Chelsea K.

Google
I live in the neighborhood and come to this Starbucks in particular because of the phenomenal service I receive from Nev, Juan and Sam. I come about 4 times a week( sad to admit). Several months back the moral of the store went down. So as my long review starts, I went in on a Saturday morning, watched this "manager" do nothing to help his clearly understaffed location. He seemed helpless like a trainee but wore a manger name tag I waited over 25 minutes for a basic iced Chai asking 2 times during my wait where my drink was? (Did he forget to put it in the system since he obviously did not know how to take an order or payment.internal thoughts) This man informed me in such a annoyed tone that mobile orders take priority I then informed him I've been waiting 25 minutes and seen at least 20 people come and go which is ridiculous, he denied me a refund or gift card, probably because he didnt know how to produce one. Then extremely rudely demanded an employee standing next to him make my drink whilst he was making other drinks... This man has no business being a manager let alone working in a customer service/ hospitality role. He was rude, condescending and most importantly not hospitable. One would expect that if you choose to work in hospitality you know how to help guests, keep the team motivated and keep it smooth. This man is clueless and should seriously reconsider his job choices, not a front facing customer service based job.

Tim K.

Google
Impolite young woman making drinks. Short with long dark hair. She has been here a while. I always.tip in advance or cash if I order in stire (bad idea). Never hear thank you. 15 minutes for iced coffee with 2 customers in store and 4 employees. No one wanted to help the trainee find the iced coffee button. Always bad service. I'll use

Yelp
For the love of God, STOP SLAMMING THINGS ON THE COUNTER!!! Stainless steel counter-tops and barista's are constantly slamming or dropping other metal things on the counters. It's LOUD and startling every time it happens. It creates the most unwelcoming in-store experience one can imagine.

Beatriz B.

Yelp
Very interesting staff...two of the baristas are very clearly male with colorful, long wigs on, one gets mad if you come in without a mask (way post pandemic in 2025) and one barista has her 3 kids hanging out in the dining area while she works and periodically comes out to give them free food and drink. I don't think that is acceptable behavior and will not be coming back to this location until they fix whatever is going on here
google avatar

Jeff E.

Yelp
My mocha was below average and the tables were disgusting. What gives? Unfortunately the Caribou across the street was closed on Xmas.

Graciela G.

Yelp
I waited 25+ mins for my order, not only was it me but other customers as well I told one of the workers and they said they were "understaffed" in a rude tone there was 3 or 4 workers the 1 girl was doing nothing but speaking to her coworker who was taking drive through orders and she was just standing there doing nothing and the guy in the corner doing nothing. service was horrible and I wouldn't recommend this place the workers are rude and unprofessional and ignorant of their customers time

Paul L.

Yelp
They really need to close this location if they can't consistently staff it, let alone keep it open during normal hours. The drive through is a trap, don't bother. Review brought to you from the 20+ minute drive through wait (and counting).

Wae I.

Yelp
OMG! 23 minutes of a wait on a mobile order that noted between 5-8 minutes! I can't believe I had to wait that long. FYI DO NOT order ahead, order at the store or go through the drive through bc you get your drink in a few minutes. I can't believe I sat and waited that long. The worst place EVER!
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I prefer Starbucks drinks and food over Caribou, but this store is SO inconsistent with its opening time that I have to go to Caribou. It's not like I can just wait around till 5:30, 5:45, 6 for them to open. The hours shown online are not accurate - they seem to open whenever they feel like it.

Debbie C.

Yelp
Wow. Only the drive-thru is open. Got to the speaker to order. Wanted a frappe. Their blender was broken. Ordered a macha. They were out. Ordered 2 black iced teas. They had them. Got up to the window and they gave us fruit ice tea. The label said black ice tea. The barista said it was black ice tea (it was orange colored and sweet). They finally agreed to remake them and tah dah, we got black ice tea. What a pain.

Rachael J.

Yelp
Love their drinks and food. Slowest service in MPLS. Definitely don't bother if you're in a hurry. Exhaust from cars running all day in drive thru is horrendous.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
They get orders wrong 50% of the time. it's like playing the coffee lottery. The parking lot drive thru totally suffocates the local independent businesses trying to exist next door. it's the perfect metaphor for how big corporations are destroying and have destroyed the smaller/better coffee shops etc.

Jamie J.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood Starbucks and it's unionized so I want to support it. However more often than not, the employees are snippy and rude. Today the male barista interrupted me mid-order and said, "Say it all at once." I was! I wasn't finished speaking! They are often randomly closed, either the café inside or the drive-thru (which blocks every other business in the strip with the long car line). I'm often going out of my way and looking for a Starbucks closer to my destination so that I don't feel like a garbage human just for ordering a coffee.
google avatar

Troy P.

Yelp
I usually do the drive thru, as long as you're not turning left onto Cedar then you're alright. If you try going northbound out of the drive thru exit, not only will you probably be waiting but you'll also be holding up the line behind you. I've never had a bad experience and service is pretty quick, my last visit the Barista was super nice. The neighborhood had some mixed feeling about "The Man" aka Starbucks coming to the hood, but it must not bother anyone too much cause it appears business is doing fine. Not sure what would need to happen for me to give it 4 or 5 stars but I guess it hasn't happen yet. The next closest Starbucks is in Target off 66th and Cedar so it's nice having another option in the area.

Saturn S.

Yelp
Went here every day over the summer. Speedy beverages, friendly staff, a calm ambiance, all around a perfect establishment to get some tedious papers done or just to relax on a warm summer day.

Yelp
I went too go buy a refresher drink, and I ask for one of their Souvenir cups and the girl was about too give me one off the counter on display that everyone have touched and everything. And I said something too her and she picked up one from behind the counter that was dusty and dirty and she succeeded too hand me the dirty top, until I asked her would she drink out of a dirty cup? She said no! So I asked her what make you think I want too drink out of a nasty cup.

Michelle A.

Yelp
As many others have noted, their inconsistency makes me not go there anymore. Drinks are correctly made half of the time, their hours are always different, they aren't particularly friendly, the drive thru is an awkward set up. One time they were picketing so I couldn't pick up my drink I had ordered ahead in the app. Overall not worth my time.

Yelp
Nice to have a new Starbucks in our neighborhood! Brand new store. There is plenty of parking available and perhaps swing by the popcorn shop too! Outside seating on the patio to people watch. Service was a bit down but we did come during off peak time and staff was busy changing garbage and washing dishes. Sorry Caribou across the street - there is new place in town. ;v)

Hilaria H.

Yelp
I was just at this starbucks and i am appalled by one of the workers customer service. we had ordered through the ap getting 4 drinks. when we came to the window a young man approached the window and yelled at us and told us "to never do this again" and more i cant recall. his tone was very aggressive and un called for. there was only a car behind us and multiple workers in the store. we are consistent customers at this starbucks and we are very disappointed. #spreadkindness

Yelp
This is the slowest drive thru in the universe. I've been waiting for 20 minutes! I'd just leave but the layout of the drive thru is so stupid that it's impossible!! I am so mad at myself for getting sucked in! Corporate coffee SUCKS!

Kerry O.

Yelp
Too sassy! Totally agree with the reviews about customer service being horrible. I was asked to order my drink with cream in the app, which I obliged. On two occasions I've picked up my drink with and no cream. The last time the girl wanted to get into an argument with me and said very snippy manner that I need to order it that way in the app. I said I ordered it with cream. After showing her that the cup said with cream she just walked away not even an apology or a my mistake. ‍. I have often dropped large tips ($50) , no more. There are a few people here that are nice and friendly, but a lot of them have a tons of attitude. Tips are for people who do their job in a competent and pleasant way, not for people who screw up and then get an at

Yelp
Worst customer service at the Starbucks ever every time I come here, and they don't pay attention to the orders nor the customers and employees are talking with each other and not even greeting the customers, The only reason why I give them one star, it's because there's no less than one star to choose from otherwise they don't deserve not even one star. They suck
google avatar

Jamila's T.

Yelp
Matcha Green Latte was horribly bitter. Employee told me not to touch the masks because they can't have customers "messing with their stuff." I didn't understand that because if they didn't want people to use masks then why did they have them sitting out. Makes no sense.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Surprisingly fast service for a drive thru line 15 cars deep. They will even heat your coffee cake! Probably the best Starbucks drive thru I have been to anywhere.
google avatar

Al R.

Yelp
Absolutely, unequivocally the worst Starbucks I've ever been to. 2 cars at the drive thru and it amounts to a 19 minute wait for a cup of brewed coffee. I've never seen anything like it. How on earth are they so slow? Never. Ever. Again.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Go to the Caribou across the street instead. WORST customer service I've experienced at a Starbucks. I live in the neighborhood and have had a few bad experiences since they opened, but today tops the list - went for my birthday drink and was told I couldn't have it when I got to the drive through window because my Starbucks app wasn't working. The guy at the window only shrugged his shoulders - I even offered to show him my drivers license. Didn't get my drink for my BIRTHDAY. Thanks for ruining my birthday, Cedar Starbucks.
google avatar

Makayla R.

Yelp
Slowest Starbucks I've ever been to. They always have such a long drive thru and I wait over 10-15 minutes for my food and drink. They are either understaffed or just slow in general but you think they'd get better? I try to avoid this Starbucks as frequently as I can

Alejandra F.

Yelp
i used to get good service here but recently they hired new guys & they seem to take longer. they don't even greet you at the drive thru when it's open. when I order my drink, they answer very rudely. its not the first time. so I ended up leaving the last time I went. now I have to drive further smh. hire better people with manners pls.
google avatar

Dustin A.

Yelp
Have been back a handful of times since the original review and each time has been much more enjoyable. The time to get your order has improved as well as the experience the staff has provided. Excited I can enjoy a Starbucks coffee near my home now!
google avatar

Pavel U.

Yelp
Second time at this Starbucks and both times huge waits for drive through. Sometimes each car takes at least 5-7 minutes. I recommend going inside the store or skipping it altogether.

Gayl A.

Yelp
S L O W 'service'. HORRIBLE drive-thru design in small parking lot for other businesses. After an awkward 25 minutes in line (trying to keep out of the way of parking lot cars coming and going), we got out of line to discover at least 10 cars ahead of us. An hour for a cup of coffee ? Nah - never again at that location!!!

tatiana l.

Yelp
Maybe it's my orders but every drink I've tried have no taste or taste like pure water...

Alex M.

Yelp
Literally 3 of us (separate people who don't know one another) sat there waiting for more than 15 minutes for BLACK COFFEE, and it was NOT busy at all. When I politely said "excuse me" to the barista to ask if my order got lost, he rudely snapped at me. It's Sunday at Noon... get it together, people want their coffee. Don't waste your time here. Worst experience I've ever had at Starbucks.

Meghan E.

Yelp
I actually like this Starbucks. Maybe they've made changes recently because I've only starting going there in the past month, but I've always had good service and consistent coffee (cold or nitro brew with sweet cream). The drive-thru/parking lot layout does suck, though.
google avatar

Ken W.

Yelp
This is my new Starbucks location. It's new, the staff is actually coherent and friendly, great location and it's always clean. There's a drive thru that typically has a long line, so long you can get stuck parked in the tiny lot. Other than that this place rocks!

Ifrah J.

Yelp
I am beyond baffled at the customer service here! If I could give this a 0 star I would. I was "helped" at the drive thru by Kimberly and she was a complete asshole if I must say!!!!! I asked her to remake my drink because they gave me wrong drink and she whispered something under her breathe as she stormed off and just when I thought it couldn't get any worse she asked me to leave the drive thru for asking for a straw and said "I already gave you one so you can leave now".

Janice K.

Yelp
Worst Starbucks ever mostly ice in my drink and a splash of the Matcha green tea barely put any powder in it mostly milk and then there was an inch left in my cup of space . They claim it was a bad batch of matcha which is no such thing. My pink drink had mostly ice in it too and another inch of space from the top. I spent hundreds of dollars a year maybe even thousands on Starbucks and they don't think I don't know how my drink is made!

Christopher C.

Yelp
Out of the 5 times I've been they've been out of the light roast 3 times. Yer a Starbucks, ya sell coffee, it's the only reason your in business.

Sheena N.

Yelp
SO HAPPY to have this new drive-thru Starbucks in the neighborhood. Their brand new building is stunning with ample inside seating, plus a cute patio for those that are ready for some sun (finally). The team working there is super friendly while being efficient (three cheers for fast drive-thru service!). The store is set up for mobile order and the coffee bar inside is quite large, plenty of room for all the drinks. Welcome!!

Mandy B.

Yelp
Yesterday I ordered a decaf coconut milk and vanilla bean latte and after drinking it I felt jittery which makes me think it was NOT decaf. If I have caffeine it makes me feel jittery and I don't have that issue when drinking decaf. Disappointed that I just drank caffeine when I asked for a DECAF, please have workers be extra careful on getting the correct order of caffeine or decaf.

Gina L.

Yelp
I'm so happy to have this new Starbucks in the neighborhood! It's beautiful and the staff is friendly and hard working. I want to make sure I mention one staff person in particular, Victor. He is the friendliest and most hard working person I've come across in a while. He makes my day every time I walk through that door. He greets me with a smile on his face and I can tell you that he is happy to be there and loves his job. He will make your day brighter with his smile and his sweet demeanor. Thanks for making the world a brighter place Victor! See you all for the next cup of coffee.
