Starbucks’s New Cafes and Drive-Thrus Are a Pivot From Its ‘Third Place’ Coffeeshop Origins | Eater

"Once positioned as a welcoming “third place” with widely available power outlets and a sleek West Coast vibe—and famous for trend-setting drinks like the Frappuccino and the “pink drink”—the chain is shifting toward a fast-food, volume-driven model. Local managers have increasingly covered outlets (a change viralized in a barista-filmed TikTok that blamed unhoused people charging devices), the Pickup-format stores omit seating and public restrooms, and the company plans to add drive-thru windows and automated machines to speed service in roughly 90% of new locations. Although the brand long touted progressive benefits—trans-inclusive health coverage, college tuition assistance, and an early $15 wage—it now faces criticism for lower average pay than some big employers and for aggressive anti-union tactics: workers across many stores have filed complaints, organizers say employees have been fired or threatened (including an NLRB complaint from an Oklahoma City store alleging threats to trans-inclusive benefits), and the NLRB has sanctioned the company multiple times. That oppositional stance has eroded the company’s community-oriented image, alienated customers (a More Perfect Union study found about 69% of customers support unionization) and left many questioning whether paying a premium for familiar café drinks and atmosphere is still justified." - Amy McCarthy

Google
I love this Starbucks location for its fast service and outdoor seating with a scenic canal view. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious coffee while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Google
Anderson was so kind and had a smile on his face when I came in. The other woman was nice too. Great service and good people. Gave them a little cat chip clip to use and spread some joy around town. 😊

Google
Go to this location many times.today I went to pick up an order.2 ladies was working around 8.30 am .youngest one told me I could not wear musk ( I have a medical condition) next time I come in.instead of addressing in private; she said it loudly infront of all the other guests .very low professional manner (usually Starbucks has one of the best customer service oriented staff ).I cked the sign for it .no sign was posted. Most of the employees in other store wear musk all the time. So I was just wondering because I was a man of color;it triggered a nerve?

Google
You’re not greeting your customers as they’re walking in and you’re also demanding they make purchase first prior to giving them the code to the restroom. What type of service is that exactly? The code to the restroom btw is 10518

Google
We went to Starbucks for an early morning conference. It was walking distance and in the downtown area. There was a long line which is normal for Starbucks. I ordered iced tea. It was good but I would like to have it in a different cup. The ice melts so fast in the plastic cup. Also, it would be nice if Starbucks would put the size options on their menu. It is confusing when I order since I don't know what is available.

Google
Had a wonderful time getting coffee here at 6a. Shout out to the morning crew and Andersen who was very social in the early AM

Google
It will be packed at 6:30 am, order in the app and you should be ready to go. Baristas are super nice and friendly!

Google
Not to busy and they had plenty of workers. I stopped in about 7:30 am on Friday I got served right away. Several other people walked in and picked up their to go orders while I was there. This store is working like clock work. Wry nice and clean friendly staff too!

Yelp
So, the Literature Club decided to take a break from existential dread and metaphors to grab some caffeine. I ordered a vanilla latte and said, very clearly, "Monika with a K." The barista nodded like he understood the assignment. Moments later, I'm handed a cup labeled Konica. KONICA. Like the camera brand. I'm not sure if I should drink it or take a photo with it. Yuri got a matcha and spent ten minutes analyzing the texture of the foam like it was a rare manuscript. Natsuki tried to order a pink drink but got into a passive-aggressive debate with the barista about what counts as "extra sweet." Sayori spilled half her frappuccino while trying to hug the pastry display. Classic. The ambiance was cozy, the playlist was decent, and the barista did apologize for the name mishap though I'm still not convinced he wasn't trolling me. Would I come back? Sure. But next time, I'm spelling my name out like it's a spelling bee: M-O-N-I-K-A. No cameras involved.

Yelp
Great and prompt service and excellent Christmas/holiday selections like the peppermint mocha and the cranberry pastry which I got. Nice location also near the Harkins movie theater. Also somewhat elevated above the canal area. Recommended!

Yelp
Super fast and efficient! One of those big and clean Starbucks that i saw...The customer service was great and be honest i had a feeling they really love their jobs... its close to canal and if you need refresher stop by...
google avatar

Yelp
Starbucks app says the store is open. Took my order. Took my $16. Drove to the store and it's closed up for the holiday. Now look, I actually appreciate that you're closed so your employees can spend time with families. But the fact that you took my order and my money irks the heck out of me. No way to report this on the app. No way to request a refund on the app. Totally on me to try to figure out some way to get my money back. I mean, this is online ordering 101 stuff, people. If you're going to close your store, you HAVE to get in closed on the online channel. I expect so much better than this from a company the size of Starbucks

Leonardo P.

Yelp
Great service staff was very nice and helpful. They answered all my questions. My cold brew was amazing.

Yelp
Starbucks is a great way to wake you up in the morning but sometimes the delivery can be slow I personally recommend Starbucks

Yelp
Visited and sat outside for awhile. Grest Bricktown location, ample seating outside and inside. I got my usual Pike with blonde shots; delicious as usual. They had lots of fun OKC gifts, too. Staff was great.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
This Starbucks is just like any great Starbucks. We got Pikes coffees and two lo cal breakfast sandwich's. It took about 5 minutes to prepare that and we were on our way. Nice people, competent workers, great food, wonderful coffee. What's not to like.

Yelp
Working in the innovation district, this location is the easiest and usually quickest to get in and out of whether early in the morning on the way to the office or for a pick me in late afternoon. Stopping in before a huge event I had that evening, I needed something quick. I ordered a black coffee but refused to get Pike (please, I'll wait the extra 4 minutes for a poor over to avoid drinking dirt). The barista was so helpful in picking out the bean I preferred and quickly started my order. While the store was fairly dirty inside (-1 star) and it's narrow build makes it a little more intimate then I would prefer, the coffee was exactly what I needed to get me through the day. The helpful and humorous barista also made it possible for me to feel validated in my coffee choices and completely worth the wait. If you're okay with chain coffee in OKC, give em a try!

Yelp
I guess you can say I have a thing for reviewing Starbucks locations. We had never been to this location before. We walked in and it was ok. Kind of dirty. We walked up and ordered our hot chocolates and coffee and waited for our order. While waiting we used the restroom. There are two restrooms and mine was the necessarily the cleanest. The baby changing table was down and there was urine on it, a puddle of it. Then the garbage can was over flowing to the point where the paper towels were on the floor. It was not too busy, they could have spared someone to tend to the cleanliness of the restrooms. We got our drinks and told a barista about the bathroom conditions. Then I took a look at the merchandise. The cups were so dusty! Other than that the staff were polite and the drinks tasted fine.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Typical Starbucks.... Wait no it wasn't!!! It was downtown maybe this is why it was so busy there was a line out the door. They really needed a bigger location here. They did handle the line well and it didn't take long to get our drinks. Which were super yummy as always. That's not hard to mess up and I'd cry if making gourmet coffee became to much for the usual young adults at Starbucks. I mean what would happen to this world!! I am not taking off for a little mess around the tables because they were extremely busy. Plus I had such a great time waiting and catching a couple Pokemon while waiting

Yelp
We stopped for some warm coffee during a rainy day. I was expecting a normal Starbucks experience. One of the customers who came in after us, appeared to be a homeless man. My friend offered to buy him lunch, he declined. It was cold and rainy, we were worried about him. When I went to order, I asked the barista about this customer. I asked if he was in regularly. She said he was. I asked a few more questions. She confirmed our thoughts, but also told us that he had a solid income stream and we shouldn't worry. As we waiting for our boujee vacation drinks to be made, I saw something that caught my eye. The Starbucks bulletin board. As I was reading it, I saw that they were actively involved in ending food instability in their neighborhood. In addition they were working with, what would be considered marginal populations in Oklahoma to feel more inclusive. I was on vacation and not looking to be all political in my purchases, but I left the store feeling like the store employees and management were really engaging with their community. That makes me happy and those are the places I like to do business with (even if it is a multinational crazy huge company). Oh and our drinks were perfect, the store was super clean and every employee that I interacted with was so nice. So, stop here. It may say Starbucks, but it totally feels like that independent coffee shop you know and love.

Robin T.

Yelp
This Starbucks location is by far my favorite of all, fast friendly service, in the heart of brick town with great views and the food is amazing. The baristas always make my day
google avatar

Kylie L.

Yelp
Unfortunately the manager or whoever was taking orders seemed like she was very put out by asking a simple question. I just wanted "bride" written on the cup for my friend getting married, lol. Simple. Poor girl, probably having a bad day but the other baristas were phenomenal. Probably picking up that slack. Appreciate them and their help.
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
This SBs is as good as all the rest. They're very consistent in everything they do. My favorite is the cold brew.
google avatar

Marlene S.

Yelp
It is small, but still packs a lot of seating space, inside and out. Service is also quick, I ordered in person and also with mobile order. It seems to be the only Starbucks in the area, so I expected more traffic, but it was relatively busy.

Ed L.

Yelp
Never again starbucks is the worst, the people they hire and they don't fill your coffee full, not worth the price
google avatar

Janelle A.

Yelp
I love this little Starbucks. It's a nice walk from my office, and when I go in the middle of the workday, they typically get me in and out pretty quickly and help me with my coffee fix. On the weekends, it's a little bit busier, but it really is nice to have a Starbucks in Bricktown. I love our local coffeeshops, but sometimes a quick Starbucks run is all you need - especially in OKC!
google avatar

Morgan F.

Yelp
One of the smallest starbucks I've been in but the customer service was excellent. My usual starbucks is closed for remodeling so I had to adventure into bricktown on a Saturday. (It was scary) It took 15 minutes to find parking but I was determined. The line inside wasn't so bad and with just two guys working they made it work and had a smile on their faces. As for the coffee, it was perfect!
google avatar

Mohamed H.

Yelp
Always busy, one of the best locations downtown. We always stop here before or after a movie. Will continue to come
google avatar

Joshua B.

Yelp
Standard Sbucks locates in Bricktown. Service was very friendly and the store was very clean. Drink came quickly and was delicious (Lightly sweet chai).
google avatar

Jenni R.

Yelp
I normally don't like rating businesses at 1 star. But this particular Starbucks location deserves it. This is a very busy location on weekends which is understandable. However, after ordering my drink on my mobile app, I was still left waiting 25 minutes for my drink. On top of that it wasn't made correctly. The service was very poor. When I asked about my order I was pointed to the line. I then waited in line to speak to a cashier. When I asked if their was a manager I could speak to I was told that there was no one on duty I could talk to. Then I was told that they were very busy and they would get to my order when they could (this was 20 minutes in at this point). Unfortunately the service was so poor that I will not be coming back to this location. That's a bummer because I live downtown and it's the closest location.

Yelp
Love this location for the view they have over downtown oklahoma. Doesn't matter what time of the day we come here, we love their outdoor seating area. Nothing special about their Drinks, regular starbucks stuff
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
If you have an allergy, they really listen! Theyre very accomidating. My mom is super allergic to dairy, and they wiped down the equipment just to be sure she wouldnt have a reaction.
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Cute part of downtown and great coffee! I loved stopping by here on my interview trail!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
I come here quite often whenever I'm in Bricktown. Because of their location, they can get really, *really* busy. I'm talking lines out the doors, even on freezing cold days. The barista's are good about keeping up with the demand though. My only complaint (which nothing can be done about) is how small it is. There's not a lot of room for...well....anything. The tables that are in there - consider yourself a lottery winner if you get to sit down. (Seriously, let me know. I'll be jealous.)
google avatar

Yelp
Love the Puppiccinos for dogs! The new Instagram page @tailsofstarbucks features pix of dogs enjoying their own puppiccinos. Only at the 63rd and Grand location in OKC! Great idea, guys!

Yelp
S L O W as all hell. Stying at the Skirvin and decided to grab a coffee so I'd have if for immediately after I finished yoga. One customer in front of me that they happen to know. It was so discourteous! They literally spent 10 or 15 minutes catching up with the person instead of making anybody's coffee! I'm not exaggerating people. I nearly missed yoga start!
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
Here be really nice and beautiful, I want someone to take me on a date today this place, I love it.
google avatar

Nathan I.

Yelp
This location is pretty convenient if you're walking around Bricktown. The main thing though is the restaurant gets crowded fast, thus creating slow lines. I am not sure if they expected this location to be as big as it is today. The baristas here are very friendly. It's sad to see one of the friendliest baristas leave!
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
This place is homie and cosy the staff is every help and patient when I couldn't decide what to order. They are friendly fast and efficient. For being busy they were a really quiet place to enjoy your coffee food item. Or if you're studying for your next big final!! Don't hesitate to come spend your time or money here and relax and take a load off.
google avatar

Marcus F.

Yelp
A great Starbucks, without question the best in OKC. Nice urban feel with a pretty good patio. Only issues are smokers sitting at the non-smoking tables & near freezing indoor temperatures, worsening as of late. Pretty high traffic spot, with lots of touristy types. Perfect spot to sit outside during sunset when its nice out.

Łuñår C.

Yelp
I love it I will go here all the time, great place to relax and do work: Highschoolers, near Starbucks and have lots of homework? DO IT HERE TRUST ME ITS AMAZING
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
What? No reviews for this Starbizzle? Well, lemee get it rollin. This one is sich-ua-ted in the heart of Bricktown next to the (fake) river and the theater. I even saw a few duckies walk by during the few refills I was there for. Let's start with the staff: SO FLIPPIN' FRIENDLY. Devon started it off by trying to help me use my jankalicious iphone (it's just old) and then another employee let me know they don't have lunch menu items because they are too far from the distribution center? I dunno. So they gave me lunch recommendations to the Texadelphia next door (and then followed up as I chomped on it). Parking can be a bit of a hassle for the morning rush due to architectural details. Bathrooms are adequately clean. Plugs - well those could be supplemented with some extension cords or something. No drive thru but this is more of a touristy area me thinks. Not bad not bad.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Came in today feeling crummy and found out they no long er carried the cascara, which broke my heart. The barista, Jennifer, was super sweet in helping me find something else I wanted and then bought me my coffee. That was so nice and really made my day. So wanted to give her a shout out for her kindness. It was much appreciated.
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
I'm usually a fan of Starbucks, but this visit was nothing like normal. None of our drinks were mad correctly. Two of us ordered coffee frappucinos with an extra shot of espresso. Both tasted like cream based drinks with zero coffee. Another ordered a caramel frappucinos which came with a ton of unknown chocolate substance on the top. A super hot day would have been a lot better with yummy drinks. Maybe we will give this place a shot another day.........

Lau M.

Yelp
Hate this location more and more every time I go in. The staff is so unpleasant I make sure to mobile order but better give it 20 mins otherwise it won't be ready. No one will greet you and if you walk to the counter and say you have a mobile order the don't even acknowledge you. I hate that this is the closet location to my apartment.

Tasha G.

Yelp
I came back to Oklahoma City due to a business meeting and to visit my family. While visiting a Starbucks location in Oklahoma City, OK at 200 S Oklahoma City, OK 73104, I was threatened verbally as well as physically by an employee. I am a long-time daily customer of Starbucks. I would say I visit a location at least 335 days out of 365 per year. On the morning of April 5th, 2022, I went in to purchase my usual daily cup of coffee. I decided to purchase a protein box and a cheese and fruit box as well. While waiting in a fairly long line I arrived at the counter in which I were greeted by a young lady named Megan. My order was placed for a venti sized blonde roast of brewed coffee, including eight packages of agave, sugar free vanilla, cream and the two boxes discussed above. After placing my order, Megan continued to help five other people, pouring brewed coffee for a couple of them and sending the orders for the rest of them over to the line being worked by Brandon and Charlee. I noticed everyone waiting for their coffee before I ordered as well as everyone in line after, leaving with their coffee. I noticed a guy working with the hot food items and asked him who the manager was due to my wait as well as my concern for my coffee. He stated he was the manager later identified as Weston. I went on to explain the service I was receiving whereas he directed Charlee to make my coffee. Charlee and Brandon began stating the coffee was previously made and my name was called going back and forth with the manager stating another customer walked away with it. The statements were simply not true. My name was never called, and my order was never made. As I stated above, I am a daily customer. I order the same exact coffee everyday visiting my home location as well as many other locations while traveling. When placing a brewed coffee order the representative taking the order usually prepares the coffee order. Megan neglected to do so while preparing all other brewed coffee orders before and after me, as customers placed their order. Charlee did not like my asking for a manager and became very aggressively abusive behind the line. I asked the manager for her name which he stated was something different than Charlee. I knew at that time I was going to be reaching out to the corporate office due to Charlee's behavior. I did not have a complaint regarding either of the other representatives Brandon, Megan, and Weston whereas I do understand Starbucks can get busy and things can be forgotten. While being so flustered regarding Charlee's behavior and the disbelief regarding how the manager on duty Weston oversaw my complaint, I began to walk out while shockingly, Brandon, Megan and Charlee began waving at me smiling yelling for me to have a good day. This area of the whole ordeal deemed to be completely antagonizing. While arriving at my destination I noticed I did not have my food items and drove back to Starbucks. I walked in and spoke to everyone whereas Megan, Brandon, Charlee, and Weston were all looking at me as if they were surprised, I returned. I walked to the register advising Megan, I left my order. She than stated in front of everyone including other customers she saw me walk out with my bag. I explained to her I did not have my bag when I left, and she said she was positive I did. Megan stated this fact at the least four to five times. Again, I stood completely shocked an employee would be allowed to state to a customer they were lying about leaving their order. Instead of treating me as a customer she treated me as I were a criminal. I looked over at the table I originally stood by while waiting for my coffee and noticed my bag sitting on the table. After retrieving my bag, I asked for Weston if I could speak with him in private regarding the treatment as well as the behavior of his staff. He refused to speak with me in private. I asked him for the name of the cashier which he gave to me. This gestor upset Charlee even more where she began to state rude gestors walking over to me pointing at her badge stating I pronounced her name incorrectly and then began to walk as if she were going to charge at me physically stating "people like you is why I am moving out of this country". Weston than began to physically hold her back from attacking me while walking her to the back of the store. Brandon yelled out be sure to tell Corporate my name is Brandon Pulaski. I walked in to get a bag of food I purchased and left due to the behavior of the staff at this location and was verbally and physically threatened being spoken to with blatant disrespect as a customer as well as a person. My goal was to contact Starbucks customer service regarding the actions of staff as well as the discrimination I received from Charlee, "stating you people are the reason I am leaving the country." I have had a couple of bad experiences when it comes to service from Starbucks however this one was the worst. Charlee threated me with physical a

Yelp
Though the line was long, this didn't seem to throw the staff. They were quick and friendly. Above average Starbucks experience. Not much room for sitting.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
I work pretty close to this location and make 4-5 mobile orders a week and every time I come in when Nancy is working she always greets me by name and has a smile on her face. Hands down one of the best employees they have and definitely my favorite location to go to!

Jayce G.

Yelp
This is my favorite Starbucks location. Ethan is a great barista, and is super friendly.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
This was the second time I came to this location. I used the Starbucks app before I went in so I didn't have to wait. When I got there the lady greeted me and as I passed her so asked "if I had an online order." I told her yes and she very politely stated "they were not done yet." Even though it wasn't done, I was okay with that because I had some time to spare. After several minutes she had my drink ready and said "sorry about the wait." I told her not a problem. When I took a sip of the drink it was well worth it. She did an amazing job, way better than the other location I went too. I would probably try to come here versus the other options on my way to work but it is in downtown and traffic can be rough.

Yelp
It's a calm and easy place to meet up in Downtown OKC. I wouldn't say it was the most comfortable Starbucks I've ever been in. They only have one set of comfortable chairs to sit in, the rest of the seating is table top with uncomfortable chairs. The outside patio is great on a warm day, however the few time's I've been there it's difficult to get the staff to bring your coffee out there, it's usually best to just wait until it's done. Thankfully they aren't too busy during evening hours. When I went (11/29/12) there wasn't any Wifi available and they didn't have any clue or reason why it was down or when it would be fixed. The service area was pretty well kept, however the customer area wasn't that well maintained, it did have straw wrappers and old cups either on the floor or laying out. Sadly, the bathroom of all places used Starbucks napkins as the paper towels for washing your hands instead of ordering or using real paper towels. The trash can was filled with stacks of unused napkins as they come out by the boat load when you're trying to pull out only a few. On a positive note, both my drinks were delicious and made with a friendly face.

Ashleigh J.

Yelp
Came here otw home from Kansas and stopped here for coffee. Obviously... we ordered on the new app and they had it out quickly and fresh for us! :)
google avatar

Yelp
Bringing this little guy up to a four after stopping in today around 11. I was greeted by the world's friendliest barista and no line! I was also pleased to see they've added a big working/communal table in place of two old armchairs. Parking was easy, too. It just seems like this little SBUX has grown up a bit and I was pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
Talk about a fast moving Starbucks, this location is one of the fastest I have ever been in. The service was given by friendly people, the drinks and food were perfect, yet there was almost no waiting time. I must admit I am amazed by how fast a Starbucks can fill drinks properly, and give exceptional service.
