Employees Petition to Temporarily Close Starbucks Because of Coronavirus | Eater

"Employees at the national coffee chain launched a petition with over 20,000 signatures, started by Aniya Johnson, a Philadelphia barista, urging management to suspend nonessential operations until further notice while continuing to pay both hourly and salaried workers. Staff argue that, despite the company’s comparatively strong sick-leave offerings — including paid sick leave and a “catastrophe pay” program that provides an additional 14 days for employees diagnosed with COVID-19 or with prolonged contact with a diagnosed person — it’s nearly impossible to obtain a formal diagnosis because testing is so limited. Workers say protective measures haven’t eliminated risk, pointing to busy locations (often near schools and hospitals) that increase potential exposure, and cite leadership statements promising that employees shouldn’t have to choose between work and caring for themselves as inconsistent with on-the-ground conditions." - Jaya Saxena

Why Restaurants Felt More Political in 2018 | Eater

"A national coffeehouse chain that frames itself as a welcoming "third place" for people to meet, work, or relax, but faced intense scrutiny after a Philadelphia location's employee called police on two Black men using the space for a business meeting—an incident that highlighted the gap between corporate inclusivity rhetoric and how frontline decisions and biases can exclude customers." - Vince Dixon

Starbucks to Shut Down 150 Poorly Performing Stores Next Year | Eater

"The company plans to close 150 of its worst-performing U.S. stores next year—mostly in urban areas already saturated with its locations—and is projecting just 1% same-store sales growth for the next quarter. Executives acknowledged that the decision to shut 8,000 U.S. stores for an afternoon on May 29 to conduct racial-bias training after the high-profile arrest of two black men in Philadelphia affected performance. Leadership described recent results as unacceptable, and strategic priorities include lower net new store growth in the U.S., concentrating new openings in under-penetrated markets, continued rapid expansion in China (about one new store every 15 hours), and the rollout of a redesigned rewards program offering more redemption and payment choices. Product efforts will lean into health-and-wellness trends as sales of sugary Frappuccino drinks have declined roughly 3% so far this year. The impending departure of long-time executive chairman Howard Schultz has sparked speculation about a political run, and the company plans to open its first location in Italy—scheduled for Milan in September—a move that has already drawn local backlash." - Whitney Filloon

Starbucks’s New Policy: No Purchase, No Problem | Eater

"The coffee company has adopted a formal “Third Place Policy” allowing anyone to use its cafes, patios and restrooms without making a purchase so long as they use the spaces as intended, are considerate of others, communicate respectfully and act responsibly. The directive — framed as recognizing locations as public gathering places where people already seek free Wi‑Fi, shelter or restroom access — follows protests after a Philadelphia store manager called police on two Black men who had been seated and denied bathroom access; the men were briefly arrested and later released, and the manager left the company. The company has also issued a standalone restroom policy and tightened guidance on when staff should call police (listing eight scenarios such as gas leak or fire, robbery, threats of violence, drug use/sales and property destruction) and how to handle disruptive behavior (e.g., excessive noise, viewing inappropriate media, verbal abuse, unwanted sexual advances, indecent exposure). Employees are instructed to assess behavior rather than target the person, seek colleague verification, attempt a calm, respectful direct intervention (introduce themselves, ask for a name, listen actively, request the conduct stop) and only call 911 if the situation becomes unsafe." - Daniela Galarza

Ordered an iced latte, waited on it to be crafted but received a hot latte. Told the barista that it was supposed to be iced to which he responded "it doesn't say that". A person who later identified themselves as the shift manager got involved and had the barista make the iced drink, then went to the register to ring it up and asked for the 35c difference for making it over since it was policy. Ma'am! If it were made correctly we would not have an issue! When ordering I clarified twice that the drink was iced. The mistake was not mine. My policy is not to pay for other people's mistakes. Do better Starbucks.!

This Starbucks is a fantastic spot to grab a coffee. The atmosphere is welcoming, with great music playing in the background and friendly, attentive service. It's a popular stop for locals, which adds to its charm and sense of community. Since it was a hot day, I opted for an iced coffee, while my date enjoyed a hot one—both were excellent. Whether you're a regular or just passing through, I highly recommend stopping by this location.

I’m here twice a week for the same mobile order and work nearby. The morning crew are SUPERSTARS. Lively, chatty, joking with each other and promoting a cheerful, playful environment for many of us managing our own heavy workloads. I thoroughly enjoy the morning workers. The afternoon crew, however, has a few sour grapes that have been not so kind to me about asking for ice for my 3 hour old iced drink from the earlier morning. Not all of them, only 2. After that happened 3 times in a row, I don’t know what I did, but I won’t go in during the afternoon anymore. Will stick to the morning crew and just get ice elsewhere! I hope everyone finds themselves in a better place soon. I’m sure the fatigue is a lot to deal with having so many demanding customers and probably not the best attitudes from many patrons. That’s center city for you. I just don’t go where I am not treated with the same kindness I give. In this case, it’s just a difference of what time, and that’s ok.

I've been coming to this Starbucks for 3 years, but lately service has gone downhill. So many new trainees have joined, and now orders are constantly wrong—hot instead of iced, no ice, and long wait times. It’s frustrating and disappointing; this store needs better training and supervision

Their iced lattes are delicious and their customer service is lovely. Will return!

It was almost as hot inside as it was outside on a 95 degree day and there were a lot of big flies inside. The music was also extremely loud for a coffee shop. Drink was good, same quality as i would get at any starbucks.

Went this morning 11/30/24 for coffees and a breakfast sandwich in two trips. My drink was perfect and the staff so kind. Nice block though in the morning a little sketchy. Had merchandise in a case with doors which was odd. Don’t know if they have to help you or just is a little deterrent for shoplifting. A good Starbucks stop overall. My cup says Barb Tons of Foam and today what a cute surprise that came with my drink. Nice baristas here for sure

This is a great place to pick up a coffee. Good music and great service. Many locals frequent this Starbucks. Since it was hot outside I picked up an iced coffee and my date got a hot coffee. I highly recommend this Starbucks.
