Starbucks Workers at This Unionized Store in Santa Cruz Just Went on Strike | Eater SF

"I learned that workers at the 745 Ocean Street Starbucks location in Santa Cruz will stage a three-day strike beginning Saturday, August 13 (anticipated to run from 5:30 a.m. that day through 5:29 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16), with a noon rally planned outside the store. Organizer Joe Thompson, a Starbucks shift supervisor who remains a union member, says the stoppage responds to alleged unfair labor practices: Starbucks announced “unilateral changes to hours,” denied wage and benefit improvements based on union membership, and interfered with the union’s ability to distribute pro-union materials. The 24 unionized employees voted unanimously to stop work, and the Ocean store is the only Santa Cruz location participating in this action; Thompson says they’ve received strong support from community partners and first responders. He also notes staff intend to follow labor-law guidelines (intermittent striking is illegal) while remaining prepared to strike again — a majority also voted to authorize an indefinite strike — and that the NLRB is processing numerous charges as the company has faced negative press for what workers describe as dubious behavior toward the union over the past year." - Paolo Bicchieri

NLRB Alleges Starbucks Harassed and Threatened Unionizing Workers in Santa Cruz | Eater SF

"At the Ocean Street store in Santa Cruz, an NLRB complaint alleges eight infractions accusing Starbucks of harassing, threatening, coercing, and restraining employees in violation of the NLRA. Workers there, according to Joe Thomas (a shift lead and union organizer), were reprimanded under a dress code for wearing a union hat and multiple union buttons — a practice the NLRB says violates federal law protecting the right to organize. The complaint also alleges management cut hours for pro-union employees and used one-on-one or anti-union “captive audience” meetings. As the store heads into bargaining, staff expect an administrative hearing on June 28 and may stage a rally before month’s end; organizers say these incidents reflect a broader pattern of alleged union-busting, noting that twenty employees have been fired across the country." - Paolo Bicchieri

Starbucks Union Gains First California Stores Following Vote Counts in Santa Cruz | Eater SF

"I reported that employees at the 745 Ocean Street Starbucks voted to form a union, making the shop—along with the Mission Street location—one of the first in California to formalize ties with Starbucks Workers United and part of the 63rd and 64th nationwide. Joe Thompson, who organizers identified as the shift supervisor at the Ocean shop, worked throughout the year on the campaign, said he’s running for State Assembly District 28 to keep the labor movement alive, and emphasized that the next priority is holding elected officials accountable; he also noted that many Bay Area workers reached out after the victory and that 19 stores in California are currently looking to unionize." - Paolo Bicchieri

2 Santa Cruz Starbucks Stores Could Become First in the California to Unionize | Eater SF

"At the Ocean Street location I learned that Joe Thompson, an 18‑year‑old UC Santa Cruz student who worked there, is a lead organizer who helped lead the January 21 union card signing and was the first in California to file; Thompson says they’re confident the May 11 vote won’t be close and hopes it will be a landslide. This store is one of two Santa Cruz shops (each with 31 employees) that would be represented by Starbucks Workers United, and the union has filed unfair labor practice charges alleging managers at Santa Cruz stores, including this one, cornered employees to intimidate them — allegations now tied to an NLRB complaint that could directly affect the outcome for this location." - Paolo Bicchieri

I suggest ordering online for this location in Sta. Cruz. Staff are friendly and nice, but due to the high volume of orders, if you order on site, it may take a while. The location is very convenient, and you can have a sip of your coffee in peace since there's a lot of seats available.

Google
This establishment is filthy, in all of the Starbucks I’ve seen nationwide it takes the cake for the dirtiest. The lady Nicole behind the counter was extremely unpleasant to deal with at 7am, not used to that since Starbucks is my daily routine no matter where I am BECAUSE their baristas are uplifting and bright in the morning. From the dirty bathroom(which Nicole forced me to stand at the counter and dance for her until I paid first to get the code) to the tables EVERY one of them and counters being disgusting and not wiped. Floors appear to not have been swept in a long time. I’ll avoid this specific location on my future trips into town.

Google
Worst service ever. I needed to use restroom and really couldn’t hold anymore. I completely understand if customer only so i asked if i could use restroom first and then buy. Two ladies just coldly said no. This is policy get in line. I cannot believe this. And there is a long line there. I never been to a Starbucks like this before. If owner see this please could you reply. I want to understand what’s the difference of using restroom before and after.

Yeswanth R.

Google
I ordered for two refreshment drinks and they served in paper cups. Never seen any Starbucks serving mango dragon fruit lemonade refreshment drink in paper cups. I asked the young lady why the paper cups and she did not even care to respond. Also I requested for less ice and they filled the entire cup with ice. Very disappointed!

Google
My 6 year old son really had to go to the bathroom, and they watched him cry in line waiting until we placed our order before giving us the bathroom code. I understand the homeless population has gotten a little out of hand in Santa Cruz and probably helped cause these extremes measures but have a little compassion for little kids at the bare minimum.

Alessandro G.

Google
Terrible service, they didn't call us when the espresso was ready. 8$ for the worse espresso of my life. Zero stars for the service.

Sophia G.

Google
First off, I hate to leave a bad review especially at local places. Today my boyfriend had a terrible experience at this location. Not just the customer service but also the system in which Starbucks has placed. He paid for his order at the counter with only 2 people ahead for him in line, got an iced coffee and breakfast sandwich. For 45 minutes he watched his sandwich waiting by the microwave as they prioritized the new online orders coming in. Finally he was out of patience and was standing close by hoping someone would notice how long he was waiting for 1 item to be warmed up when he was confronted by a store member about standing and watching. This would never happen in a small coffee shop.

Michelle Z.

Google
I am so mad. I planned on buying a drink but my 6 year old needed to use the restroom first. Even though he was crying saying he was going to pee his pants and it hurt they WOULD NOT give me the code to the bathroom unless I purchased something first. This is unacceptable! I will be calling corporate for this. I understand an adult but a child!?!

Yelp
Staff is very polite at this location, however it's unfortunate there is no public restroom or any kind of seating. I made the walk from a nearby business I was working at hoping to have a place to sit on my break, and was unfortunately left disappointed. The .25 cent surcharge is not Starbucks, it's a Santa Cruz city ordinance. I had to pay .50 cents for 2 ice waters in addition to my coffee, and the baristas were apologetic. It's .25 cents per single-use cup. As there isn't a drive-thru or seating, this is best as a simple stop-and-go location.

Yelp
Every time I come to Santa Cruz, this particular Starbucks has a number of people waiting outside or potentially waiting for their drinks? On this particular Saturday afternoon, I walked in, and there was nobody in line! Sadly, my Internet was not working so for me to pay with my Starbucks card I held up the line as four people came in right behind me! Oops! The baristas were very sweet and patient with me, but I think my drink got pushed behind all the people that came in after me. Lol there are no tables in the seating area and there is nowhere to sit whatsoever. I'm guessing that is due to the high number of homeless people that live nearby. As I was leaving, there was a homeless person coming in yet he had money to buy something and left his shopping cart outside. I wouldn't mind going back to the Starbucks again, but I will definitely do the mobile pick up order since that seems to be a lot faster than ordering in person especially without Internet service. Lol.

Yelp
Order in the app, perfect way to go especially with a location this busy. Brown sugar oat milk shaken iced espresso? Yes, I will. (Plus it has four shots). Ordering online prevents my son from going crazy with my credit card. The first time he returned with 13 baked goods including three cake pops and three Venti iced drinks with whipped cream. Oh, and my coffee and breakfast sandwich. Ordering in the app is definitely the way to go.
google avatar

Yelp
No drive thru, small parking area, and no chairs or tables inside, they really do not want you to hang out. I stood for a couple minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge me. The one who watched me walk in then turn her back ignored me until another gentlemen came from the back and asked if id been helped. She looked directly at me, said no then turned back around. They really dont care hoe they treat the customers. Also, no restrooms
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
Beverages are made consistently with any other Starbucks. The parking lot is small though and is super cramped, we happened to get lucky with someone pulling up right as we needed a spot, otherwise, I'm not sure where else we could have parked without going down the street. We had also ordered a tall cold milk and just wanted an extra short cup on the side so we could split the drink into two. We've never had an issue with other locations giving us an extra cup but here they wanted to charge us $0.25 for it. Not sure if this is a new Starbucks policy or if it's just specific to this location, but either way, super-lame.
google avatar

Ry T.

Yelp
We stopped here for a cup of coffee. The cashier was really friendly and got my order right. I was pretty shocked they slapped on a 25 cents charge for their paper cups. I usually bring my own tumbler but as I was on vacation, I left it at home. The drink was made correctly. It's a pretty big Starbucks but no seating. Evidently there is a homeless issue in the area and loitering in the shop.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Went to get coffee this morning and they were not friendly AT ALL. The girls making the coffees were too busy gossiping to focus on making the orders correctly. Ordered a white mocha and got a coffee with milk instead. Went back and no one greeted me as I walked in. I had to walk up and ask for help since they were talking about personal issues. Very unprofessional.
google avatar

Yelp
Zero. NO RESTROOMS for paying customers. What? Starbucks?! Had to drive blocks away to a McDonalds after my outrageously expensive Starbucks coffee. I am completely baffled as to how a Starbucks doesn't have a bathroom. Will never spend $ there again.
google avatar

Shahram M.

Yelp
Very meh experience at this centrally located Starbucks in Santa Cruz. Walked this morning to grab a coffee at this fairly expansive location just to find out that there is no furniture or any kinda seating available inside or outside. Not sure if it is on purpose due to the homeless situation or what but very disappointing. On top of everything they charge for tap water. The barista mentioned that it's law in Santa Cruz which seems very odd.

Yelp
Thanks to you, I now enjoy my breakfast at locally owned businesses in Santa Cruz, such as Ferrell's Donuts and the Bagelry.
google avatar

Yelp
I think my favorite aspect about Starbucks is the app that lets you preorder your coffee so you can skip the line. I don't have much time these days so I can quickly order my drink on the app and then come pick it up. Truly a time saver. My beverage of choice is pretty simple: americano. I never order their fancy Frappuccino and other sweet drinks, they are too sweet. I also heard that their sweet fancy drinks might contain not healthy ingredients and it's best to avoid those. My favorite food item on their menu that's also reasonably priced in my opinion is a breakfast burrito. I think it's a healthier option from their menu.
google avatar

Elizabeth I.

Yelp
I stopped off here today on the way to my friends house and got a venti carmel ribbon crunch frappuccino.. The place was crowded but the employees got all the drinks out pretty fast. My drink was perfect. I perfect start to my morning
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
No tables, chairs, bathrooms. Get in and get out. Not a good study spot anymore. This Starbucks had a major issue keeping their location clean and safe due to homeless people frequenting it as a hang out spot and to use their restrooms. I used to love studying here, but now there is not a single table or chair outside. The bathrooms have also been blocked off by a new wall.

Jayden D.

Yelp
There was a mistake on the app that said that 2 food items I ordered were available (which they were not) so when I got there to pick up my order they were (obviously) not with my order. The workers were so nice and so quick to make alternatives to my first choices and through in a bonus cake pop just because. I had to give them credit for being so quick to help. :)
google avatar

Yelp
Come here if you want to wait 30 minutes for one drink!! The drinks are not consistent. Sometimes it would be stronger than other days. There are no seats here and people have to stand and wait in the corner. If you really have to, I'd suggest doing mobile order. There's likely no parking because people double park here.
google avatar

Michel H.

Yelp
It is comical that this store is closed regularly (and so randomly) for the most random things. One day it will say due to incident, then power outage, then lack of supplies, etc. The store hours don't even matter because it is a gamble as to whether or not they will actually be open. I have spent easily $75 on pre-ordered drinks that I am never able to get because I don't find the store open. I think it's time to close this location and let another business take over who will actually allow customers to buy food/drinks. Sorry Ocean St Starbucks.

Rachel L.

Yelp
They gave me a cup full of ice with a side of the drink I ordered. They also charged me a 25 cent cup fee. Wtf!!!!
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
The staff was super kind and made me feel so welcomes. It is a very clean establishment and the barista was nice and made me feel good. My caramel macchiato was made with extra LOVE

Leah S.

Yelp
The Ocean Street store is my favorite. Everyone is so friendly and efficient!! I wanna shout out Alex for knowing my name and my drink how kind of you to make me feel special when I get coffee.

Tristan F.

Yelp
I can't believe a store like Starbucks makes you pay $0.25 for a water after I just spent $14 on drinks. Will not be visiting again. I've been to a lot of Starbucks and never had to pay for water.

Natalie R.

Yelp
to the young mexican girl with the flower clip, learn manners!! you shouldn't have a job if you don't know how to acknowledge customers, and can't even apologize when YOU make a mistake. absolutely terrible attitude
google avatar

Tommy L.

Yelp
I won't repeat the other critical reviews about staff attitude or overall unpleasantness of vagrants inside and around the parking lot. But I do want to share a super negative experience. My latte lid was not secure. It popped off in the car and spilled all over me and the car. "Stuff happens," was my first reaction. And while I realize that ultimately the consumer is responsible for checking that the lids are secure, one of the attributes I love about Starbucks is the high quality cups and lids (and I used to love the straws, too, before it switched to paper). However, after reading all of the other negative reviews about staff ambivalence towards delighting customers, I am even more outraged about my sloppy lid (as it seems more likely a result of worker sloppiness rather than a random occurrence). In fact, I was enraged enough that it motivated me to write this 1-star review.

k e.

Yelp
Zero ambiance or amenities. No tables or bathroom. Go to anywhere else. Will be stopping my Starbucks purchases to 'refund myself'.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
One year later and this is still the worst most disorganized Starbucks on planet. Huge crowd standing inside most wearing masks. just like a year ago when I ordered a coffee with nonfat milk, it was lost in the mix with all of the mobile orders and walk-in orders. I stood for 22 minutes before finally asking, is my coffee somewhere in the line. of course it was not. It was lost. I would have been standing there for another 45 minutes. The guy kindly made the coffee immediately when I asked. Starbucks does not care about reviews. People don't read reviews before going to a Starbucks. And clearly Starbucks management does not review the various reviews. Because this Starbucks continues to fail at providing even mediocre customer service.
google avatar

Marissa A.

Yelp
I don't mind the extra fees for add one but 25 cent cup fee lmao how else am I suppose to drink my coffee? I didn't realize the air was suppose to hold it. 2nd time here & it sucked again they have zero customer service skills. I'm not even from the area & it's not convenient for me to go out of my way because the service is so bad. You should hire people who actually want to be there
google avatar

Missy N.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed, when you are a diabetic and you ask for heavy whipping cream blended specifically not the cold foam mixture and they are so incompetent and lazy and just do not care to listen, Spiked me over 60 points... fyi you could really hurt someone.
google avatar

Dawn S.

Yelp
Difficult to get in and out of, staff act as if they would rather be anywhere else, painfully slow service, not clean, and coffee was watered down.

Riley A.

Yelp
I come to this Starbucks everyday and I love it. I do wish that there was some seating every once and a while so I could come hang out more but other than that I never have had a bad experience. The baristas leave little notes like "have a good day :)" on my food and drink every once and a while and it never fails to make my day that much better. I always get the brown ice sugar espresso with soy and an extra shot, if you never had it you should give it a try.
google avatar

Cathy L.

Yelp
$5 bucks for coffee but NO toilet. You have to go use Jack in the box. WTF? Keep it classy, Starbucks

Nico S.

Yelp
Ordered for pickup. Was ready when we came! Was welcomed in! Great vibes! On the pastries we ordered, someone wrote "have a great day :)" really made me so happy. Love it!
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
They dont have any tables, i came to get some work done and the place is only taking orders.

Virgil M. K.

Yelp
Yesterday was the third time I went online to place an order, as I was going to be driving right by, but their app says they are closed. The times before I still stopped and went inside and placed an order. But for me the third time finding them open, when their app has them closed ... I drove on by, stopping at another coffee company. I do not know why this one location does this, maybe equipment problem or employee error. It does reflect ... for me I did not stop there.
google avatar

Tisha V.

Yelp
EVERY TIME I stop by to get coffee and a pup cup, I am greeted by happy and sweet people! The customer service is OUTSTANDING and the product is consistently perfect! When I need a coffee fix, I am happy to shop her! The employees make this a WONDERFUL place to stop!

Richard S.

Yelp
Place is so crowded. Parking lot is small and hard to get out of. This place also made me feel uncomfortable.

Karina Q.

Yelp
Drinks were fine; it's the service that was a downer for me and my boyfriend here. Guy who took my boyfriends order was rude- we get it; it was busy and my order was a tad bit complicated. Doesn't justify being a butthead and overcharging an expresso with cinnamon as 6 bucks. Other places it's 3 or 4. Do better guys

John W.

Yelp
They sell coffee and food and restrooms are closed, if you can't manage the homeless, you shouldn't be in business in California. So frustrating needing to go and can't go. From now on, I will only suppose places that have public restrooms, when I need to go, I need something you built for customers. 5 staff members, 2 customers and closed restrooms. I love leaving positive vibes but they didn't even acknowledge my existence. Might as well be a zombie apocalypse. Not returning back to this location ever!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
A great location!! As a Starbucks obsessed coffee drinker, I've been to hundreds of their locations from their original Seattle store 1 location to international locations such as in Tokyo, London, and more. The only things I care about are: 1-How my drink taste 2-Cleanliness 3-And customer service. Those 3 things can make or break my experience and are pretty simple for any and every store location to get right. This location: 1- my drink was made correctly and tasted great 5 stars 2-the store was clean inside and outside, No trash, overflowing garbage cans, or dirty tables 5 stars 3-great service, helpful and appreciative of our business 5 stars Will return again. Great job to this location
google avatar

Justine C.

Yelp
If I could get them zero stars I would. They literally took 20 minutes to make two drinks, and two food items. It was 4 people working, the guy behind me got his drink before I got any of my drinks. I've been to a Starbucks that was so slow in my life and I've been to a lot of Starbucks. I recommend not coming here. Only come here if you have an extra 20 minutes to spare.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
This Starbucks rivals San Francisco locations. From non rush service to stepping over the homeless to get in the place. Then when you order, don't try to sit anywhere because there aren't any seats. Put your own lid on, and if you need a cup holder be ready to beg and yell for it.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Very nice Starbucks! The worker was very nice and welcoming. Easy to talk to. Ordered a tall nonfat sugar free vanilla latte. Very good. Came quickly. No line. Very nice looking Starbucks. A little different from the usual where I am from. Very clean too! Great service and drink! Recommended!

Bobby M.

Yelp
Could be one of the worst ever. Plenty of space for guests to sit, but they are still living terrified of the pandemic. Not one seat they all are removed. Watch all the customers struggle to put on there own lids! Yes they wont put your lids on after paying 6$ for your coffee. On top of this you pay .25 cup charge for what??? Did I mention you cant park in there lot because the employees park there so you are left to park at the court house. I will never spend a penny at this Starbucks again.
google avatar

KC L.

Yelp
Big mistake coming here (late March 2022) especially when there are much better coffee houses (e.g., Verve) on Pacific Ave, just a few blocks away. Waited 10 minutes for a tall Pike that arrived LUKEWARM. Staff moved like Zombies. They have removed ALL of the indoor and outdoor seating, apparently to keep away the homeless who used to camp out all day there. Truly a dismal experience.
google avatar

Brooke J.

Yelp
Went in this evening and ordered two drinks. I had my mask on and was very friendly... Paid for my drinks and patiently wait at the other end. Some gal employee with red hair was very loud and acted like she owned the place. She told me twice to step away from the pick up area even though I had my mask on. I backed away and was leaning against the back part of the store, And she asked me again to move away from the window... What the hell are you doing? I'm basically the only one in the store quit acting like your job is more important than customer service... I'm not some homeless person begging for free coffee that you're probably normally used to... Quit being a bitch. I'm pretty sure one of the guys felt sorry for me because he made me a free drink just for the heck of it I appreciate that.
google avatar

Vicky T.

Yelp
New store on the corner!! This place has been a contaminated site for years and was supposed to be a lot of things. Over the last year it's been a sight to see watching this place change into a Starbucks. As Ocean Street is getting a new "lift" of businesses it will be interesting to see how the mom and pop shops do.... check out the Santa Cruz Sentinel article on July 5th 2017 on the back story of how this location came to be. This location will be a part of my morning routine (opens early). Things to note: Lots of indoor and outdoor seating (including two long tables inside center of the store) Lounge like area in back Small parking lot (walk it out when it is peak hours) I mean.. I am coming in hella early so there are not a lot of folks.. will be back during different parts of the day to see how the baristas handle the beach traffic/ tourists.

Edith L.

Yelp
I always rather go to Portola Startbucks... this one in ocean st it's always closed 2 hours before ... I don't know why I even bother to get down the car and check . If they always close before time .. ‍‍
google avatar

Brianna V.

Yelp
Solidarity forever! This store is the first in CA to file for a union election. Way to go, partners!
google avatar

Ern D.

Yelp
Came at 8:40 pm and the door was locked on Sunday, Nov. 14 and the staff was waved me off and signaled that they were closed. The website and Starbucks app clearly states the stores closes at 9 pm. Seems like the staff wanted to get off a bit early, not sure corporate would approve of that and lose sales just so the staff can go home early and not work their full shift

Claudine D.

Yelp
I thought I was going to be an exception to having poor service when coming to this location but see I am not alone. Plenty of 1 star reviews. I have been to this location several times and receive the same rude, almost entitled to be a jerk to the customer attitude. No greeting, smile or pleasant conversation while I order my over priced coffee. If you hate working with the public quit your job. I want to believe there wasn't a manger on duty today because if there was how you allow your team to truly show the worst customer service is beyond me and you should be fired. Starbucks overall has gone from meh customer service to horrible over the years.
google avatar

Cali M.

Yelp
It was incredibly busy this morning. Clay ran the register with a happy energy despite all the mayhem going on. He kept calm and problem solving for the team. Great work store!

Kayla C.

Yelp
Grab and go location only, lot of people upset about 25 cent cup fee, no seating, no bathroom, and having to lid your own drinks despite all of these things being completely out of their control. It's recently unionized yet Starbucks hasn't done anything to respect that legally making their jobs 10 times harder. My advice is if you happen to stop this location maybe just thank your barista for their hard work and go on your way instead giving them trouble over circumstances out of their control.
