Starbucks Accused of Union Busting as it Announces New Benefits | Eater

"This location recently voted to unionize and is counted among 50 Starbucks stores nationwide that have organized; its partners are now part of broader bargaining efforts even as the company announced a $1 billion commitment to partner and store investments and a scheduled August 1 wage increase (either a 3% raise or $15/hour for eligible hires), along with expanded sick-time accrual options and student-loan refinancing tools. The company has made clear those pay and benefit enhancements will not be extended to unionized or organizing stores, a move the union called a blatantly unlawful union-busting tactic, prompting a charge filed with the National Labor Relations Board and a pledge from union leaders to demand immediate application of the improvements to all partners." - Bettina Makalintal

It's a pretty decent-sized Starbucks. The people working in this one are quite friendly. They're always seems to be seats available. I often wait here will my daughter has swim team practice. I still don't understand why you can't get a pistachio latte anytime of the year, but hey you can't get everything in life you want.

Google
Friendly staff. Efficient and correct on order. Mid size seating area with ok seats and ample plugs. I wish Starbucks generally were more conducive to the remote work and study set and more like the original coffee house experience, but given prevailing winds this is one of the better ones in the area.

Google
This was my first time at this location. It’s a decent Starbucks, there is lots of seating and a small parking lot. Fast service. Except the WiFi wasn’t working for anyone (4/25/2024) FYI…

Google
The staff here is so kind and helpful. Yuliana remade my order after I messed up and ordered at the wrong store. This is why Starbucks will always be my favorite

Matt Tillinghast

Google
Good location. A little bit better than the Acton location but it’s still a good spot.

Google
The customers here are really mean and the workers handle it well. I feel bad and try to tip more. If you read this can talk be nicer to the people making your coffee and serving you???

Google
Staff is good. This location has a Matcha and chai latte. Also they have plenty of merchandise options.

Google
I was looking for a specific item and called ahead to the store. The employee who answered was very short with me and assured me that the store had the item I was looking for even when I double checked with her the description. She told me to come to the store. Drove all the way there and the store didn’t have what I was looking for. My issue is that if she had taken the time to listen I could’ve avoided wasting my time and gas.

Yelp
stopped in for a morning coffee and the place felt warm and welcoming my latte was smooth with just the right amount of foam and the tables were all clean and well spaced

Yelp
I enjoyed the spaciousness of this Starbucks upon entering. A lot of Starbucks are on the smaller side but this one is larger and has a pretty "open" concept. I could see sitting down here with a book or laptop to do some work. Service was quick and no issues with our orders. The iced blonde latte with SF vanilla and the pineapple refresher were great! Rice crispy bars are your typical rice crispy bar but they're larger than the Kelloggs rice crispies you get in the grocery store. There is no drive-thru at this store. Only park and walk in or order ahead on mobile.

Yelp
Not a regular at Starbucks but was taken there by my landlady Judy. The place was clean but the prices were outta my ballpark. The lady making the coffee was OK but seemed like she'd rathet be somewhere else. She did write my name on my cup which was nice. She spelled Judy's name Judi.

Yelp
I ordered a grande green iced tea and a raccoon cake pop and I was very impressed how fast my order was created. The employees there are very friendly and said hi back as soon as I entered Starbucks. The raccoon cake pop tasted similar to the birthday cake pop which was very tasty and my green iced tasted great as it usually does. I recommend this location to anyone who lives in Watertown or drive by on a quick trip.

Yelp
Review #1111 My very first covid-19 review - only makes sense to do so as a Seattleite. This is also the first establishment that I visited after my move to the area. That said, I have only been here a couple of times because it is always so busy. I like to customize my drink but the baristas never really followed my mobile order instructions. It is located directly in front of the #71 bus stop, which is a busy line bringing people into Cambridge. As things start to open up, Starbucks sent me an email alerting me that my rewards points would start to expire again. While I am hesitant to go out, I decided to pay a visit since it looks like we will be in this era for the next 2 - 3 years. I tried to redeem my points by ordering two drinks via the Starbucks app. However, the 150 stars only applied towards one drink and charged me for the other. So I had to put in two separate orders so I could redeem the 300 points I have on profile. There should be a way for me to redeem both drinks in one order, right? When I got there, the front door facing the street is now exit-only, and you enter from the parking lot entrance. Once inside, I saw two lines, left for mobile order and right for grab and go. No seating is allowed inside the store and the bathroom is closed. There were only two employees. There were two people waiting in front of me for mobile order and two people for walk-in order. I saw my drinks sitting at the counter, but I had to approach the barista to retrieve them. I am a little disappointed that it is not entirely contactless. There are plenty of locations where the drinks are just left on the counter and you are free to pick up your order and go. Also, there was no paper bag when I asked the barista, so she gave me a used paperboard box as a cup holder. My frappuccino came with plenty of whip cream, where I specifically requested no whip. Again, I think the location is so busy that the barista simply does not have the time to actually carefully follow instructions. A disappointment but a common problem for Starbucks locations (except the ones located in midtown NYC, they get way more traffic but always follow mobile customizations diligently! They rock!). But, that is just a first-world problem.

Yelp
every time I come to this location my drinks never taste like on what I ordered... I ask to remake it and they still don't make it right... listen I don't expect my drink to be perfect but common i want to taste on what I paid for... Starbucks isnt cheap... all of the employees need to relearn how to make drinks... ive been to other locations and my drink wasn't perfect but it tasted on what I paid for... its like no one knows what their doing or don't even care

Yelp
Super busy even at 6pm on a weeknight, there were no tables or seats available inside. And because it was raining, nothing outside. I opted not to stick around and went elsewhere to do my drinking and laptopping.

Gina M.

Yelp
So we got a 6 dollar drink and 90% was ice and when I got the drink it wasn't even fully filled. Never had this problem with other locations. I remember ordering a drink, not ice.
google avatar

Yelp
This is your run of the mill Starbucks. You have a variety of seating and a small parking lot. I feel like it could use bit more seating given how busy it seems to get. But I was able to find a seat without issue so I can't complain too much. Parking can also be an issue so keep that in mind
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
Pretty busy location. Try to avoid it between 8-9am if you are not in a hurry to get your coffee. Parking lot is always full. Some of the customers park very bad. Aside that, the coffee shop is very good. The stuff behind the counter are really good and quick. Even in a busy morning I haven't waited more than 5 Minutes to receive my order. The location has enough seating space. I haven't been there in the afternoon, so I can't tell if it's busy or not. I will update that info once I know it. Thanks, Daniel K

Yelp
My first pumpkin cream cold brew was perfect! Mobile ordered this and showed up less than 5 min after. Waited for a hot minute among at least 6-8 others, and mine was ready! I was in and out within 3 min. Super busy for a Sunday morning around 12 though.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
I usually try to avoid this location.. they don't even fill the drinks up half way!! Also, I always order the same thing the Gouda sandwich with no meat and of course they always throw a bunch of meat on the sandwich.
google avatar

Yuezhu C.

Yelp
I had a mobile order today that says "no ice, two scoops of strawberries". They literally gave me half cup of ice and only one scoop of strawberries. They kept me waiting for 7 mins when making drinks for those who got there later than me.

Yelp
I love this location! I work right up the road from this Starbucks, so I'm here often. The employees here always go above and beyond- and they do so always with a smile on their faces. Plus they make my drinks really really well!
google avatar

Danielle E.

Yelp
The dream team is all I have to say. Nicest team and always on their A game. How they remember all they do is a beyond me! Thank you guys!! Love you! Xx

Emma H.

Yelp
I despise this location and when I am craving Starbucks, I go out of my way to another Starbucks to avoid it. Why Emma? Oh I'll tell you I guess. Cons: -The dreadful parking lot. It's extremely small for such a popular location. It's always a mad house, especially on weekends. -SLOW SLOW SLOW. Despite how busy it is in there, the service is always extremely slow. I once did the mobile ordering app when I was 20 minutes away at a time where I knew it would be slow, because my faith in this place is so small. My drink wasn't even made yet. -Understaffed. Glossily understaffed mixed with baristas going extremely slow is a recipe for disaster. -Wrong orders. The simplest orders get messed up. I remember a couple months ago the 3 people in front of me (including myself) all got orders wrong by the same barista. And we all got simple coffees. I mean...come on. Am I being too harsh? Maybe. But as an ex-barista of five years, if we ever tried pulling half this crap we would be fired or management would of stepped in at a certain point. It's been years and nothing has changed.

Yelp
I was excited to try the new toasted white chocolate mocha but it tasted like coffee and milk! No white chocolate flavor at all, very frustrating
google avatar

Barbara A.

Yelp
I really like their hot chocolate, cafe mocha and mocha light frappachino. The iced tea (black tea, no sugar) is not really that good - I think iced tea without sugar should still taste good (the sugar is just the extra), and it is not right. I also like the mini vanilla scones and those new cakes on a stick (they gave my daughter a "sample", which was the whole thing - that was nice). They are close to where I live, so I like to stop by or meet friends here. The baristas are very nice here and have never had an issue with them.
google avatar

Savannah H.

Yelp
There isn't much room for sitting or outlets but for a quick coffee it does just fine. The inside is small though so it isn't a quiet atmosphere if you need to do work, though how quiet can you really expect in a coffee shop :)
google avatar

Artur S.

Yelp
I love Starbucks in Watertown. They're always super nice, sometimes a little bit slow on a busy day, but very professional. Love going there every morning before work. Wish more people worked tho!
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
I love Starbucks but I can't stand this location. The parking lot irritates me (or the people who park in the parking lot?) and it doesn't get better inside. Every time I go there someone is pushing on me and trying to butt in front of me. Why?! I know how lines work. Don't they?! I've also never had my coffee made correctly there. I don't order anything special. It is usually a doppio or a cold brew with sugar free hazelnut. The other day I ordered a doppio on ice with a shot of SF syrup. I literally got a full cup of syrup. Ugh. So gross. My cold brew never gets the syrup that it is supposed to. It is just so weird and frustrating. I also feel like every time I order something I get a million questions about what I'm ordering. I don't understand why. No other Starbucks has an issue with this. The tables outside are nice, but people smoke there constantly and just ruin it for those who don't.
google avatar

Rashmi W.

Yelp
Worst customer service at a Starbucks. The people here make it a point to slow down the drinks. Believe me I have been to Starbucks in Spain , where people don't speak English but their service is way better.
google avatar

Seth M.

Yelp
First things first, I'm not a fan of Starbucks, their corporate giant philosophy which they try to pretend they don't promote, or the people that go to Starbucks. This Starbucks is special though. It features exceptionally slow service which would make even the most patient of people (which I do try to be) enraged. This place is mostly inhabited by the typical group of Starbucks clientele: hipsters who are pushing 50 and trying to pretend they're 22, hyper-pretentious Mac users who associate Steve Jobs with the saviour of mankind, people with iPhones and think that because they have an application to tell them the weather that they're weathermen (seriously the shame of New England) and pretentious yuppies who think that because they pay an extra $4 for their coffee and add funny names to their coffee they're somehow better than everyone else. Now, as for their coffee, thats a matter of opinion, but I'm drinking a coffee now which has a very distinct taste of pineapples and plastic and it really disturbs my curiosity. Their coffee is never anything special, but people don't go to Starbucks for the coffee, they go so they can get a cup with the Starbucks logo on it so they look like they an afford the extra $4 on their coffee. Another thing which pisses me off about Starbucks is that they're selling pre-made turkey sandwiches for $5.75+tax. Nothing special about the sandwiches, normal sandwich bread that you'd buy for a dollar in a grocery store, normal turkey and normal cheese, but it still costs an arm and a leg. You can go anywhere and get a much larger, much fresher, and much tastier sandwich for much less and it's insulting to think they would even try to sell something like that to people. This particular Starbucks is full of Armenian people (like everywhere else in Watertown) yelling on their cell phones. I don't have any problems with Armenian people, in fact many of them are quite nice and hard working, but these ones pretend like they're from the Jersey Shore and people like that are obnoxious and dirty and say things like "Oh you're from Russia? Russia? I don't know where that is." I really don't like people like that in Massachusetts and it definitely kills the atmosphere in this establishment. Also I'm in this Starbucks now and I just overheard someone say he was Turkish-Armenian and that the alleged Armenian Genocide killed 900 million people and no one admits it. So long story short, the people that work here are stupid. The people that frequent this establishment are even dumber and need a history lesson and a slap in the face. /rage over.

Yelp
By default, my favorite Starbucks... and I say default because it is the only one around. (WHY oh why can't we get a Starbucks in Waltham? I would pay some major coin...) Parking is difficult and they don't always mix things up quite right... some baristas are better than others. Decently friendly staff, although one day they did not secure the lid on my iced coffee and it spilled all over the little area where you pick up your straws and napkins. I cleaned it all up myself and then asked for a new drink. They said OK, they would only charge me for half. That was kind of sucky but I guess it was partly my fault... still lame though. (Yaay! My 100th review!)

Kristin S.

Yelp
The parking situation is truly horrendous during peak times so I can't give 5 stars, but honestly, I have two other Starbucks locations within a 5 minute drive of me but I still go 15-20 minutes out of my way to come to this one instead because they are the only location in the area that consistently gets my order right. It's super clean a recently remodeled, too.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
I can't complain too much about the drinks because well.... it's Starbucks. It tastes like every other Starbucks. I give it 4 stars like almost every other Starbucks. However, the customers here are AWFUL. I don't know what the deal is with Watertown, but the first time I came here the place was flooded with moms and strollers. Some kind of meet up group I'm guessing, but I wish the store staff would have asked them to fold up the strollers and put them in the corner or something. There was no space for anyone else to sit and I found it really inconsiderate to other paying customers. The second time I was here, I hesitated when ordering my drink because I changed my mind and got yelled by the customer behind me. "Are you ordering or what?!" Chill out, man! Jeeze. I paused for maybe 2 seconds. Then in their couch/lounge area a customer was sitting in one of the comfy chairs and moved another one to the middle of the room to prop up his feet. He didn't appear to be drinking or eating anything. He was just sort of there and awkwardly blocking up the comfier chairs and floor space. I recognize that none of these issues are about Starbucks itself, but in all situations the staff never did anything to try and facilitate the interaction. If people come into my work place and are being rude or inconsiderate to another customer, I usually step in and politely handle the situation. I just think it's good customer service.
google avatar

Margery C.

Yelp
Very difficult to park-got harrassed by a group of young men illegally parked when I was pulling out of my parking space-they were afraid I'd hit there illegally parked Lexus but they wouldn't move it. I guess these men own the place. My drinks are always watered down and the barristers don't smile. I won't be returning.

Danielle K.

Yelp
This Starbucks consistently doesn't pay attention to whether your drink is ordered hot or iced. If I'm paying $7 for a cup of coffee, the order should be correct.
google avatar

Young P.

Yelp
Came here to get some work done and found the experience to be less than average. Service was okay, it was difficult to find an open space, and nothing about the store really made my experience there any special. My expectation at any Starbucks store isn't very high so the fact that this place didn't meet my average expectation is the reason why I am giving only two stars! My cold brew iced coffee tasted pretty good though.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
This Starbucks has a lot to offer: generous chairs and tables for reading or laptop work (with free wi-fi!), fine baked goods (especially their apple fritters -- great indulgence fulfillment at the lowest price), the best mocha frappuccino in town, Tazo Refresh tea second to none, a good selection of books to read, and some outdoor cafe seating. It's also a handsome renovation of an old Friendly's restaurant, cupola and gabled roof intact. Yet I miss the easy-chairs I used to enjoy sinking into with a good book or laptop that they had before their renovation. And, personally, this isn't my favorite brand of coffee. But for a good place to get some work done away from the house when the Watertown Free Library is closed, Starbucks at 75 Mount Auburn Street is good value.

Lena K.

Yelp
A typical Starbucks--but hey, consistency is key! I've gotten a couple nitro cold brews and they were as expected. The fact that they spelled my name right is what really boosted the rating to 4 stars. Go team!
google avatar

Kosta S.

Yelp
Love going to this place every morning, they have a woman named Olimbia who is awesome behind the counter. Quick, efficient, and my order is always right.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This is the closest Starbucks to my boyfriend's place, so given my Starbucks addiction, I'm here quite often. Yes, I am addicted to iced nonfat mochas. What of it? This Starbucks is pretty decent sized, and they have always gotten my order right. I grew up drinking nonfat milk, so that is all I can tolerate, and they have never given me whole or lowfat instead of that to my knowledge. And trust me, I can taste the difference. They also have quite a few tables and chairs, so it's a nice place to go and relax with a book if you need to kill some time. My only issue with this particular location is the parking. IT SUCKS. Sometimes you can find street parking when the lot is full, but it's not a fun time.

Brad B.

Yelp
My favorite Starbucks in the burbs. Fresh coffee, quick service, and clean café. The manager is so nice and the new furniture layout livens the space - cozy book and community corner. Plenty of room for my wife Wendy's wheelchair navigating to the accessible tables. One request - comfy leather chairs for me and my furry buddy Anthony to lounge. Thanks!
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
Pretty standard but nice Starbucks. The staff has always been pleasant and I've never needed a drink remade. It's always clean and the straws, napkins, etc are always stocked. They have a nice little patio in the summer. The only negative is their parking lot which I suppose isn't their fault but it's always crazy crowded at all hours. Like others have mentioned whatever you do - don't go to the Starbucks in the Target - it's heinous on all levels.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
My go-to Starbucks. The servers are always attentive and very nice. It's a 'bucks! You know what you're gonna get!
google avatar

Phil O.

Yelp
So this is the only Starbucks I go to really. Parking does indeed suck, but if you avoid peak hours you're golden. There's a lot w/like 10 spots or so available and if that's full you might have to park and walk 3 minutes. It's a Starbucks, what the f am i gonna say? You will always get quick and attentive service but eating there has the feel of dining in a soup kitchen. 1 time I was there w/my Altzeimers uncle and listened to 2 young Starbucks queens condescendingly drill a younger guy during a job interview. No one else took notice and the questions, though a bit creepy were no more unpleasant than any comparable company, like the Gap. If you live nearby it's good for non Dunkin coffee and fresh ground coffee if you ran out and didn't realize. Also, their seasonable seating is cool and dog friendly.

Maialen A.

Yelp
Ok. My family and I used to come to this Starbucks so often, the staff would treat us so so so nicely, and we'd bring the small dog of ours outside to hang out with us. Such a nice atmosphere. But yesterday, I walked in and was immediately greeted with a "No dogs allowed" by a barista that looked to be in her early thirties/late twenties. I asked politely if I could order and wait, but she just continued saying "You can tie him outside and order, but we cannot have him inside, It's a health violation" so I went outside, and contemplated where I should tie him. There was, in fact, no safe place in my opinion for him to be tied, for there was a busy street RIGHT. ACROSS THE STREET. I didn't feel safe having him there, so I went back inside, and please let me tell you that my small dog was in my arms and away from any food. I made sure of it. The girl gave me attitude, bad body language, etc. And said "I told you he can't be in here." I said "But he is a service animal." He was in fact an emotional support animal, but I was embarrassed and flustered because of how much of a scene she made, I didn't say so. Not to mention she misgendered me, twice. I'm a girl, She/Her/Hers. "Just make HIM the thing" "Just make it for HIM" I literally just wanted some whipped cream for my doggo and a small water for myself. It would take 3 seconds, tops, for the trained baristas to just make it and I would leave. There was no seating available anyway. Overall a very upsetting experience. It was that girl with the brown/orangish hair that really annoyed me. Otherwise Starbucks is a nice place. I hope she doesn't do that to other customers. I'm so so sorry for having to leave this amazing place one star, but this girl's behavior is so terrible.

Dora G.

Yelp
I watched them make a breakfast sandwich with no gloves, then touch their apron and then the cash . I purposely waited to be served by someone else. Not the cleanest SB I've been to. They also gave me an overflowing coffee and didn't bother to wipe it down. I was desperate for coffee, and then quickly remembered why I haven't been here in over 6 months
google avatar

Brad G.

Yelp
The people here are very nice and they do their best. But what we are talking about is high speed corporate coffee. Really your perception of whether this is the best cappuccino you've ever had or the first step to great cappuccino depends upon your journey. For me this was the first time (since my trip to Italy) that I had cappuccino. It was a good start. . . but not the same. I've been to a few different coffee houses around the Watertown, Waltham and Newton area. Really great cappuccino is available at TASTE in Newton. But try everything else first that way you'll figure it out for yourself like I did!!

Miranda P.

Yelp
I honestly don't know how this store is still standing. I order my drink 15 minutes in advance via app every day and every day I wait an extra 15 minutes. a total half hour until i get my order. When I go in and order I wait 30 minutes and still no drink so I have to cancel my order
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I only go to this Starbucks in a caffeine emergency. The service is painfully slow and you only have a slim chance of getting what you order. I have a friend who grew up in Columbia and she says she could fly home grow, harvest and return with the coffee before they could serve you what you order at this Starbucks. She may just be right. Staff just does not pay attention to what they are doing and move very slowly. Even for just a cup of black coffee poured from ther coffee maker into a cup can take five minutes. Seats outside are filled with people smoking and parking is a pain. Avoid if you can.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
I normally wouldn't write a review for a corporate, big-box, take-it-as-it-is company, but the service at this Starbucks is A-OK in my book. There is no drivethrough and the parking lot is nut-so, but all coffee shops have their pros and cons. Luckily I normally come in here while waiting for the bus, so I don't have to deal with the craziness. Anywho- the cashiers are just a joy to be around. They go out of their way to ensure all customers are happy and often promote further conversation with patrons. Maybe they are making up for the long linse, crowded tables and tiny parking lot, but hey- it works for me!
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
I have no complaints with the exception of the parking situation. This particular Starbucks is located amidst a very much 'bustling' part of Watertown. The parking lot itself is quite small and makes for minimal breathing room. Driving into the lot, as well as getting out of it, is quite dangerous, due to traffic of the area. It is so bad that it concerns me, and other customers. It just wasn't a wise idea to put a Starbucks in such a small area!
google avatar

Eli J.

Yelp
The Watertown Starbucks is one of the worst Starbucks I have seen. I used to live in Watertown and went to this particular Starbucks because it was the closest for me. I found the servers generally unfriendly, brash and seemed to lack customer service skill. Most often speak another language - Russian, and feel intruded when you get to the register to order. I think it gives the place just a negatives vibe when do many either incompetent or unhappy people work there.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
Facility is nice but the workers are whatever. Some of them are just rude but others are fine. Its forgettable for a starbucks.
google avatar

Julia F.

Yelp
This is absolutely the worst Starbucks I have ever been to. I always order a soy drink (I'm a lac-tard) and they have on several occasions given me regular milk, which makes the rest of my day HELL. Sooo... thanks! You evil little employees for always messing up my order, taking forever to do so and then not really being polite and hardly ever calling out my drink after I order it so that the likelihood of it being wrong is better. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
google avatar

Dinna Y.

Yelp
Staff is always friendly but they still get surprised w mid-west friendliness back. It's super busy in the mornings but they're quick. I love how the red-headed barista announces the detailed drink differences with such gusto. He makes it fun to wait for your drink. Very smart! Tried to come do some work here. Not many tables anymore and the music is too loud for conf calls. But if you're coming just to read or do work, it's perfect!
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
This place is speedy and makes a great coffee. Parking can be tough but in watertown where is it not? Staff is very friendly.
