Disappointing Experience with STARLUX Airlines
Booking a flight with STARLUX Airlines from Seattle (SEA) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) turned out to be a major mistake. I booked this trip for my parents, both 75 years old, through the Alaska Airlines website, traveling from Atlanta (ATL) to SGN with connections in SEA and Taipei (TPE).
The Alaska Airlines segment from ATL to SEA allowed seat selection without any issue. However, for the SEA–SGN segment operated by STARLUX Airlines, seat selection was not permitted.
I contacted Alaska Airlines customer service, and their representatives were friendly and helpful. They clearly explained that this was a codeshare booking and advised me to contact STARLUX directly, which was reasonable.
Unfortunately, my experience with STARLUX customer service was extremely disappointing. The representative was rude and unprofessional, and communication was difficult due to a heavy foreign accent. I was told that because these were “discount tickets,” seat selection would not be allowed until 48 hours before departure unless I paid additional fees. Alternatively, I was advised to cancel the reservation made through Alaska Airlines and rebook directly with STARLUX in order to select seats.
This response was shocking and unacceptable—especially considering the passengers are elderly. Penalizing customers for booking through a partner airline on a legitimate codeshare ticket, while offering no reasonable accommodation for senior travelers, reflects very poorly on STARLUX’s customer service standards.
STARLUX promotes itself as a 5-star airline, but based on this experience, I seriously question who awarded those stars and on what criteria. It certainly was not earned from my experience.
I would not recommend STARLUX Airlines to anyone traveling with elderly passengers or anyone who values basic customer service and transparency.
