Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop

My friends and I went to Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop this past Thursday during happy hour. We were the only people there at first and the service downstairs was great. When the rooftop opened, we went upstairs, but many of the tables and seats were very dusty. My friend went to ask the bartender if there was a rag so we could wipe the table down. The bartender was counting money and when she finally noticed my friend, she asked if we had spilled something. When my friend explained there was just dust, the bartender responded sarcastically, saying something like, “Oh, that must be so hard. Sorry about that.” After that interaction we decided to go back downstairs and finish our drinks. The whole situation felt awkward, and we were surprised no one offered to help clean a table since the rooftop had just opened. One of my friends has asthma, so the dust was a concern. Overall it was a strange experience, and based on that interaction I’m not sure I would go back.

Enjoyable brewery! The beer is tasty but a step below its neighbors Väsen and The Veil, but it does have a better space than both of those locations. The rooftop bar is very nice with some quality views. Staff is quick with a drink even when there’s a line. Bathrooms are also clean and well-kept. The WiFi password is above the water station on the first floor. Overall, a very solid brewery that’s worth your time.

Good variety of tasty ales and stouts. Wine also available. Live music, and a bar on the main floor as well as on the roof. Pinball machines and board games available. Fun place!

Always a great time. Starr hill beer is always solid with a great rotation of seasonal and special releases. From the bottom floor, staircase, and rooftop it’s a visual delight. Food trucks are hit or miss. Great staff who want to to try and learn!

Every experience I've had at Starr Hill has been great. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The vibes are cozy and comfortable. Will recommend to any beer buddies.

One of my favorite spots in Scott’s Addition! Great beer selection (looooove having more than one sour option on draft) and the atmosphere is nice and cozy. Love catching a game on the rooftop or a movie night downstairs on the projector. Staff go above and beyond and always have great recommendations.

The rooftop here is the perfect place to hang out with some friends and enjoy an evening! They have string lights and flowers all along the rooftop creating the perfect vibe. I'm not a big beer drinker but I tried two of their sours and liked both of them! There's plenty of room to sit downstairs as well if the rooftop isn't your thing. I'd say this place is definitely worth a visit!

The rooftop is the place to hang out on a sunny day. They have space heaters for your friends who need a little boost in the spring. Bohemian raposdy is the perfect afternoon treat. Bring your visiting friends for a true VA beer experience.

Headed out for a celebratory beer after the Richmond Marathon. This place was packed! I was excited to see a variety of sours and flight options on the menu. I ordered Roxanne, Rio, Stupid Sexy Flanders and Virginia Peaches. Honestly, I didn't love any of them. Virginia Peaches was probably my favorite. They do have a nice rooftop area, lots of space downstairs and an additional outside area. Worth grabbing a drink here on a nice day.

I LOVE Star Hill! It's a very cool vibe and has a great rooftop bar with a super pretty view. It's in Scott's Addition and I saw that they had a lot of cool activities that they do! I saw that they have Christmas movie nights..running clubs and drag bingos! I got the Runners Flight and I liked 3/4 beers but it was an IPA that I didn't like so I had a feeling! Such a fun place to hang out with friends and chill with a good view!

If you're ok with marginally good beer, at best, then slide in for some pours. There's plenty of variety and option. The space is the best thing going for Starr Hill, it's awesome and spacious. There's vast indoor space, a ground level outdoor space and of course the roof top. Even on a cooler 55° January day I thoroughly enjoyed the rooftop. Looks like there's some TVs around for sports games. The gal who served me was super nice and helpful. All in all, you come here for a great outdoor venue to hang with friends. The mediocre beer is secondary.

this place was very cool! a huge inside and rooftop overlooking Richmond with good music! The drinks on tap were delicious, but they didn't have ice which I found add! Staff was nice enough, too

We love Starr Hill! Delicious brews, fun place to go for Trivia night, fun atmosphere and awesome rooftop vibes! I've never felt like it was too crowded in here, always find a seat to relax and chill. They also have live music of different varieties. Also very friendly staff here! Definitely enjoy their wide selection of brews and always have fun here. Another awesome Scott's Addition brewery !

Absolutely thrilled with my experience at Starr Hill Brewery! The expansive industrial-style beer hall offers a fantastic atmosphere with both downstairs and upstairs outdoor spaces. As a beer flight enthusiast, I was delighted by the diverse options, including the opportunity to create my own flight. The holiday flight, especially the Snickerdoodle Golden Ale, was a standout! While the layout could be clearer - there's an upstairs bar for orders - the adventure of carrying my flight upstairs added to the fun. The upstairs terrace exudes a cool vibe, making it a memorable experience. Can't wait for my next visit to the area and another delightful stop at Starr Hill Brewery!

Greta indoor and outdoor space including a roof top. I'm not sure if the roof too is accessible because I don't recall seeing an elevator. They had several great beer options is I got a flight and liked every single one. There was a food truck outside that seemed to be popular with several guest. The staff we engaged with were very nice and service was fast even on a Saturday evening.

Starr Hill is a fun place. It has good beer and an even better ambience. I'm not a beer person and I always find a drink that I enjoy here. They host some of the best events in Scott's Addition. My all time favorite event is their monthly Drag Bingo hosted by Michelle Livigne and Wette Midler. Starr Hill also does a great movie series during the holidays and has a running club. The rooftop is reason enough to keep returning here. Something about it really captures that local RVA beer scene for me while also having an air of familiarity (even if it's your first time there). It's comforting and the place you want to be. They also host yummy food trucks! I usually go for sours or lighter beers when I'm at breweries. The Drama Queen and Miley are two I like a lot. If you don't like beer they also offer a hard seltzer! When you're in Scott's Addition, Starr Hill is a great stop for your brewery hop. It's especially pretty during sunset.

10/10 recommend the Virginia Peach beer. Was like drinking an alcohol-infused peach ring! Setup is great - has a small stage for performances, big TVs (for sports, movies, etc. - see below) and honestly just a great lively vibe. Plenty of seating - cool merch and even had some artists/vendors setup the night we went! My ONLY complaint - and this is not really their fault - is we went on a night where they were showing a horror movie... and I kid you not, the ENTIRE bar was full of people INTENSELY watching this movie, even the bartenders... so we scrambled upstairs as to not disturb them after we ordered our drinks LOL - had a nice upstairs area with a covered/heated portion that we sat in. There's a bar there too and rooftop tables that I am sure are bustling in the summer. If you finish the Richmond Brewery Trail here, they have some nice beanies to give out too :) other places have more trucker-style hats, so beware!

Plenty of room available. Indoor, rooftop and outdoor seating available. Street parking only. Bathrooms available. And they have a water station to fill up water bottles/cups. Follow them on social media to see what food truck will be there. Lots of merch available as well! Lots of beer choices to pick from. We're definitely making our rounds around the craft beer scene in Richmond!

Cold beer and a roof top?? Who doesn't love that? This is a nice spot to get her with friends and enjoy. The roof top is where the crowd is on nice days. They have two TVs on the rooftop so you can keep up with sporting events while hanging out. Be prepared to show your ID to get in. They card people of all ages. I would describe the crowd as younger 20's and hipster. In an area filled with bars and breweries the Star Hill is in the middle of the pack and just OK.

One of the better breweries in Scott's Addition. Lots of space, a patio and rooftop. Good chance you can find a place to sit here no matter what.

TLDR: great vibes and aesthetic, ok beer? Let me preface this by saying I'm not a beer person. However even though I don't like beer I would still come here just for the vibes. The open space inside is very clean and aesthetic. We weren't able to really look around the rooftop because it was reserved for a corporate event but it did seem very nice. We got a beer flight but while it wasn't overly expensive I thought that the amounts for each cup were a little light. Overall if you are in scotts addition and want a nice place to chill and drink beer with friends this is a great place for that.

Overall this is a great beer hall! I like the aesthetics and the rotating beer list. I like that they have a bunch of different types of brew- not just IPAs as is common for many breweries in Scott's addition. I can usually find one that I really like.

Wish I could have left a zero star. I am 22 years old and I have never felt so disrespected. When I leave any amount of tip and I get asked why it wasn't more it truly makes me not ever want to return. I leave a tip and I get asked "what is with you young people and not tipping right" the beer is mediocre at best and the service is the same. I will never be returning. The man with long grey hair needs to find a new industry because the service industry is not where he should be.

Came here on Saturday evening to have a couple of drinks before going to the Squirrels game. It was very crowded at 5 PM, but there was plenty of room up on the rooftop. I had a few beers. Prices were pretty reasonable, cheaper than beer at comparable places back home in Nevada. They had a decent selection but not the biggest selection I've ever seen. Bartenders were quick. They were showing the Redskins on TV. It seemed like this isn't a place people go to watch sports as much as hang out and socialize. I'd be happy to come again next time my travels bring me to the River City.

Finally, a brewery with multiple goses & sours! I'm not a fan of typical beer, so when I go to a brewery I look out for the one gose/sour. I was happy when I arrived at Starr hill and saw a whole section dedicated to it! Naturally, I ordered myself a flight. Flights here are based on what drinks you get, it's not a set price. I ended up paying about $13 for the 2 sours & 2 goses. They all tasted really good. Service was great, the atmosphere was a bit different. Probably the only brewery in town without board games, but I liked it. We went to the roof for a bit just to see, but there isn't really a view. They did have heaters and there's a lot of space though, would probably be nice in the spring time.

When I think of a brewery I think a casual atmosphere with a few guys wearing flannel shirts who have thick lumberjack beards or finely groomed mustaches sitting around on purposely mismatched chairs playing board 15 year old board games that were stained yellow by the cigarette smoke of someone's great uncle twice removed. I hear ambient music that has a sort of electronic rhythm, a solid beat and maybe even some gibberish words. Starr Hill is not your average brewery I went on their opening day and it was more crowded than I have ever seen a brewery in Scott's Addition. The line to get a beer took nearly 10 minutes to get through and the menus were not visible until it was time to order. They had a good selection of beers broken down into flavors so it was easy to find something I liked. Once I got my beer I struggled to find a place to stand. While there are lots of tables downstairs, there was barely even standing room so I decided to check out the roof. The roof was not much better as it was just as crowded. There are heaters on the roof, another couple bathrooms and another bar. Additionally inside they do sell some nuts and light snacks, beer by the case and grower fills. Overall I would like to check out Starr Hill again to see if the crowds die down. If it stays this packed then I think I'll have to write it off.

Sour flight. Off to a great start. Rainy day so couldn't partake in rooftop but Richmond has some great breweries.

So I have been to Starr Hill in Crozet and it was one of the best brewery experiences I ever had. Amazing beer, friendly service, great atmosphere. I was looking forward to trying the Richmond location since it's about an hour closer to where I live. I entered on New Year's Day and of course they were socially distancing; they had about 15 to 20 tables available inside. I was by myself so I was given a smaller table. I got a flight of 4 and the Day Tripa, their triple IPA packed a nice punch. Very strong without tasting too heavy. What was really aggravating to me was the décor. This particular location has chosen to make some of their atmosphere politically focused towards one particular side. Obviously I can't go into much more detail or I will get ripped for it, but the point is between the shirts the signs and... wall decorations in a corner, it was not something that I appreciated. Keep the politics out of beer please. Thank you and be well.

The check in process was quick and friendly. We headed upstairs and it was a great day to relax and chill on the rooftop. They have a good selection of beer from ales to gose and they also have two selection of flights to try. Great beer and great service.

Great time here. The beers are very good. I'm not a huge microbrew fan but they have some very goodnones that will please about anyone. Self serve is quick and easy. It does get very busy on weekend night.

My favorite rooftop in Scott's Addition! Cute rooftop , good selection of beers, and friendly staff! In terms of atmosphere and vibe it's more similar to slingshot/bingo/hof garden than your traditional breweries!

Came here with a group of girls during a Saturday afternoon. We were all SO excited for the rooftop and great beers. Unfortunately, the bar staff (more than 2 separate bartenders) were curt and rude to us. When explaining the situation to the "manager," he reverted to explaining all the ways our group was in the wrong and they were not. Only giving 2 stars for the satisfactory beer. Recommend Hardywood instead!

Solid time. Nice beers. Nice rooftop. The music isn't too loud and the bar staff is really nice.

I love the original Starr Hill location in Charlottesville and this location is always much much more busy. I only gave it a 4 because it's always a madhouse on the weekends and nearly impossible to find any parking spaces nearby. We had to park clear over on the other side of Scott's Addition and meander our way over. We had our pup and it was pretty crazy to the point the line was out the door. The beer is phenomenal-so it's easy to see why it's always crazy. They have a great selection for everyone who may want a beverage. We sat outside so I cannot speak to the inside accommodations. I will be back... maybe on a weekday.

Star Hill is a standout to the brewery scene in Scott's Addition. The space inside and outside are a great spot to hang out with a group or solo. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable about the beer. Definitely would recommend for a night out.

They have a big open area upstairs that is a roof top. Especially during covid, we enjoyed hanging out up there. The lights are pretty and you can see some of Richmond. I also did trivia here pre-Covid and it was a lot of fun. It was also Harry Potter trivia, so it was packed to the brim. Not a huge beer drinker, so I can't speak much for it myself. However, my friends (who like beer) say it's fine/good. They drink lighter beers for context. I think most people go for the atmosphere and activities as it is a fun place to hang out.

If you want a safe place to drink with your friends, then I highly recommend Star Hill. They take reservations, so you do have to make an appointment ahead of time. For our party of 10, they ordered us 2 tables and roped it off for us. I have not tried going without a reservation, so I cannot speak for the wait time unforunately. There's outdoor seating on the deck and roof, and indoor seating the in main hall. If you are not seated at your table, then you have to have a mask on! What I love the most is contactless payment, so have your phone ready. Ordering however is still down with a server, but the menu is online. The drinks are reasonably priced and I love the redux. It's more on the fruity side, which I like more than the hoppy variety.

We had a lovely experience this afternoon and our waitstaff was excellent event providing samples of beer close to what we were having. A good way to introduce you to something else! Their hours are shorter during the pandemic and you can't just walk up anymore...you arrive at the entry booth first. Best to reserve a table now when you visit

Sours, lagers, hefe, IPA's and a healthy stout menu. Rooftop. Dan liked his juicy IPA. The peppermint stout was peppermint patty-ish. Nice

Nice vibes even inside when we came on a Friday evening. Their COVID precautions are pretty legit and we got sat inside since their beautiful outdoor patios were full. They have small bites here and a food truck onsite most of the time. The beers were decent but I did not love the sparkling GF red beer everyone seemed to be drinking. Definitely a great spot but the outdoor area is more exciting then the indoor area.

The staff is ALWAYS friendly and welcoming, always! Very polite, very informed. The beer is terrific. The atmosphere in the beer hall is just the same. Don't miss this place. You'll be glad you didn't.

Place is lame. Boring. Beer was decent. Zero atmosphere. Service wasn't friendly. Zero personality. Just NOT fun.

Although I really enjoyed the beer and our server was very nice, the bouncer yelled at any person that tried to ask a question. This place requires a reservation but still makes you stand in line (without being able to ask questions apparently). I was surprised that after waiting 20 minutes past our reservation time, there was 4 other open tables inside. Not sure what is going on, but they are not very good at managing the outdoor crowd.

Service was sub par to say the least. They don't let you try beers. Insane. The location is nice though. My gf didn't like any of their sours. And I had the double chocolate raspberry which was pretty good.

No wait list! Seriously! Drove here from out of town to try their beers. However, the inside was full so we asked to be placed on a waiting list... because we wanted to sample Starr beers. We were told we couldn't be put on a waiting list because they didn't do that. So we asked how would we know when someone departed and there was an opening. The gentleman reiterated that they didn't do wait lists. I say gentleman because I asked for his name and he wouldn't tell me. A short fellow who was working the door at 1702 on Sunday evening. I've never even heard of no waiting list before. Oh well.

Not a comment in their beer, which is very good. I love their Snowblind dopplebock. It's one of the best winter beers out there. And the original brewery and taproom in Crozet is outstanding. This is more regarding this particular location. The people who live within walking distance might like it, but the biggest problem with all of these new breweries in this area of Richmond is a single word: access. Good luck finding parking if you're in a motor vehicle anywhere nearby. Plus, when I went in today there were 30 people in a single file line. Some day these breweries will find out this is not the way to do business and stay in business. Ballast Point's east coast taproom over in Roanoke had this exact same problem and shut down. Come right when they open if you what to be able to park nearby and avoid the cacophonous noise levels later in the day.

We were very disappointed in the service at Starr Hill in Scott's Addition. The bouncer at the door yelled at us to close the door as he checked our id's from inside, but there was literally nowhere to stand. When my girlfriend ordered a flight,there was no indication of what was what and the service was slow (though they were not busy). A law enforcement officer asked if there was a discount for military/police and the bar tender laughed and rudely said no. We will not be back.

The service here is awful. Went here twice in a week, and my group felt terribly mistreated by management. Every time I went to the bar I felt like the bartender didn't care about us. We requested to see a sports game on one of their screens. They said no but apparently changed their minds for another group of people after us. A friend of mine (who was just watching a movie they had on a screen and hadn't had anything to drink) fell asleep on their couch and they threatened to kick him out. He was warned about not sleeping, woke up, later went to the private restroom, and was apparently followed by the bouncer who kept knocking on the door. My friend kept responding and was awake, but when he got out of the bathroom he was thrown out of the restaurant. It felt like my friend was targeted. It's very strange they would follow him and accuse him of falling asleep in a private restroom. There are so many other great breweries in the area; each of them treated us with dignity and respect, but each of us felt like we were treated like second class citizens here.

This is my favorite brewery in Charlottesville because the beers are great and the space is cozy. But the Richmond location needs some work. The lighting inside is so harsh and blinding. And the seating is cramped. The upstairs roof area is much nicer than the downstairs experience. I do like all the live music they plan to offer.

Everyone is rude not even worth your time. Didn't know it was to much to ask for to just be respectful.

Let me begin by just staying the beer and brewery are awesome. No complaints there. The service inside is also fantastic. But the people they have working outside helping people get checked in/putting their name on the list couldn't be any more unprofessional and rude. Good beer only gets you so far in the service industry.

Would have loved to have given this place an opportunity, but I was turned down at the door because I had an expired Ohio ID. I explained to the woman at the door that the governor of Ohio extended all license expiration dates through December because of COVID and the DMV being closed. She refused to acknowledge this info, even with the Ohio DMV website pulled up. Out of staters - don't waste your time.
