We drove here for a double feature from West San Antonio, approximately 45 minutes. When we arrive, we notice a sign saying "No Idling if parked near other sitting outside, diesel engines must be off." OK, I don't drive a diesel, and they do produce an inordinate amount of smoke. Turns out, they mean all engines, gasoline and diesel. Hmmm....but the way you get sound for the movie is through your FM radio, right? On none of their online advertising do they state patrons need to bring their own, battery powered radio.
Two more PSAs during the previews state no idling is allowed during the movie. I go inside to the concessions area and behold, they rent radios: $10 for the rental, a $20 deposit, and you must leave your driver's license at the concessions stand for God knows who to duplicate and use the audit number for identity theft. I ask to speak to a manager. I explain I'm happy to present my ID so she knows I'm using my own credit card, but I'm uncomfortable leaving my ID in their possession out of my site. "Sorry, can't rent the radio then." Ok, I then ask how people were supposed to know to bring a radio separate from the one in their vehicle to a drive in theater. "What do you mean, you can use your car's radio, that's fine." I explain to her the policy adverised is no vehicles are to idle during the movie. "Yes that's right."
"Well how am I supposed to have sound for more than 30-45 minutes if running my radio on my car's lead acid battery?"
"Oh some people's vehicles can last the whole movie."
"No, " I explain to the 16 year old manager, "there is no vehicle that can run a radio through a three hour double feature without going dead, without starting your engine every 20-25 miniutes to run for 3-5 minutes to recharge the battery, except maybe a Tesla which is all battery. No internal combustion vehicle can do that."
My daughter really wanted to see the movie, so we tried for about 30 minutes. During this time I was trying to see if they streamed the sound over ip so we could at least use my iphone to hear some of the movie once I had to turn off the radio so we could start the engine again, but no, they don't, would probably cost too much or require an IT employee earning a living wage. What the hell? Back in the day the old drive ins used to provide a speaker you hooked to your window. If they're not going to provide that, they should prominantly display in their advertising to bring a battery powered FM radio from home. Only reason this is not a one star review is they did refund our admission when we finally had to leave (as soon as I started my engine after 30 min of running on battery the woman next to us almost jumped through my window screaming "TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE!!!". Don't waste your time with this place, or if you do, bring a battery power FM radio and prepare to be underwhelmed by the visual experience on these tiny screens.
