Despite Coronavirus Concerns, Houston Restaurants Reopen | Eater Houston

"At State Fare the first weekend back felt like getting into the groove of service again: executive chef Justin Yoakum said it felt good to be cooking, to see co-workers and guests eager to return, and that they smiled and laughed because they were glad to have the opportunity to open." - Amy McCarthy

First time to State Fare. A beautiful August morning and we dined outside. Only three other tables with two guests at each at 9;30 am Saturday. Food was good as well as the atmosphere dining outside. But service was excruciatingly slow. The waitress was sweet, but rarely did she come around. Another table went inside to pay instead of waiting. We requested a small to-go container and the check. After more than 5 minutes the waitress came out with container and check in hand and spent 10 minutes (no lie) taking orders (and chatting) from three other tables before bringing our container and check that was in her hand the entire time. Will we be back? Not likely since we heard previously that service was an issue but we gave it a shot anyway and found out it was true.

I came to the restaurant and me and my friend ordered food separately. My friend received his food before I did and I ordered my food first. I ordered a crab pretzel and he ordered buffalo wings so we just figured that the Crab pretzel took longer to make. They were actually closing the kitchen and forgot to bring me my crab pretzel so I asked the manager and then they brought me out a cold dried up crab pretzel with nothing melted at all. Looks like it's been sitting for a long time. So when I took it to the manager and asked him about the temperature of the crap pretzel he said he microwaved it, so I said feel it. It is cold. He said it's not the same pretzel it's another one like they pre-make crab pretzels so I was confused because I would have thought that the crab pretzels were made to order. I tried to get a refund and I'm still waiting to get a call back from the manager and that was 2 weeks ago now but I did come back to talk to the manager and he wasn't there so I did stayed and enjoy the DJ

Taylor (male) was my waiter/server and he was really nice! This was my second time coming to State Fare and both times were great. I didn’t get a picture of my food because once it came I totally forgot and dug in lol. The drinks were good and so was the food. I ordered the blackberry cocktail and the other is a pineapple crusher. For food I ordered crab dip, 1 lb shrimp, and lemon pepper wings. All from the happy hour (1/2 off) menu. Everything tasted great. The shrimp could’ve used some more old bay, butter, and garlic powder but they were still good! And the onions they cook with the shrimp are chefs kiss. I could eat a bowl of those to myself, lol. Atmosphere was great, the music could’ve had a little more feel good/umph to it. I like to move my shoulders while I eat lol. Overall it was a great experience. I can’t wait to go back ✨

I took my grandson there as a treat for his performance in a school play. Most disappointing. The waiter left a lot to be desired. He got one drink and forgot the other. My iced tea was bitter so I ordered ginger ale and he forgot to bring it as a replacement. He brought the food which was very well presented and tasted good. We had a chicken sandwich with fries and salmon on Jasmine rice. I had to ask him for my drink and a refill for the other. (I observed him hanging out with the other waiters and not paying attention to us.) No refill. The table beside us came in at least 20 minutes after us and received their food before we got ours. Bar patrons and servers were extremely loud 📢 NOT HAPPY

Google
The crab dip looked old and the cream of crab soup had an appalling layer of grease on top. Food 2/10. I’m disappointed. The pickle fries burnt. The eggs were less than appetizing needed better seasoning and some mayo. Dry at best. The overall vibe of the restaurant was high end but the food is amateur.

Lori A.

Google
First time here and it came recommended by family members. Shrimp and grits were flavorful as were the collards. Creamy of crab soup was all good Had the honey old bay wings - they were dripping in honey so make sure to ask for wet wipes. I personally found the wings over cooked. Chicken and waffles are chicken tenders. Two of the tenders were dry but the third one was cooked perfectly. Portions are big so I had enough food for leftovers

Update April 2025 still a great spot for eating and drinks any time of day. I was there with a large group on a Wednesday at 1 first our waitress was so kind attentive and efficient super cute black lady pink polish and a big smile. We all had different entrees and everyone was satisfied. Great menu selections great drinks awesome bar above average selection of spirits. The food came out very fast the cream of crab soup is excellent. I had the California wrap it was delicious I chose the brussel sprouts as my side, they were delicious and crispy. The restaurant has an open floor design and has great parking....,.....State Fair was awesome food was great service was great server was very attentive. I am so sorry I did not take photos which is what I always do but my friend and I were so hungry I did not think about it. Unbelievable! We had the buffalo wings excellent and the crab dip, delicious to start. She then had the chicken Gyro I think, and I had the pastrami sandwich the fries were very good..service was fast waiter was attentive and the food was hot. We will be going back!!!!

I've brought my wife here for apps and cocktails a few times. The happy hour menu is a great value with a wide selection of options. The inside feels trendy but accessible, while the outside is cute and great for people/car watching. The staff have always been friendly and attentive. You could easily bring a casual date, or a group of work friends.

Yelp
Tami the server was amazing! She made the experience memorable. We had a party of about 20 yet the food came out quickly and tasted amazing

Yelp
When Statefare first opened, I wasn't the biggest fan. However, in the past 5 years I've come to love this restaurant. It's a great location. Right in the heart of Catonsville, there's a huge parking lot. And if you're in the mood for bar hopping there's other great places near by. The interior is a great size. Nice and spacious with some cool art. And the service is great Jimmy, is ALWAYS attentive, friendly and he makes the best drinks. On my first visit many years ago I hated their wings... it was the sauce. Now, they have it right. The wings are nice and crispy, and full of flavor. The Potstickers and Big Stick (mozzarella sticks) are good as well. They also make really good burgers. Me and my friends like to come for Whiskey Wednesday. It's 1/2 off whiskey and they also have karaoke that starts at 10pm. So if you need a little liquor courage there you go lol. This visit I tried the Beaumont Manhattan and the New Old Fashion. The Manhattan was perfect. This Old Fashion was ok, I personally didn't like the taste of absinthe. However they do make really good Classic Old Fashions and Smoked.

Yelp
Mediocre. The crab soup was very good but the berry salad was almost inedible due to the massive amount of dressing it was drenched in. (Note to self- always order it on the side.) Lamb chops kind of fatty but ok. Waitress was not personable AT ALL. Ambiance is your average burger and brew vibe.

Yelp
I honestly, don't even want to share this review, because I really want to keep this place to myself. You know when social media (etc) get involved, then lines go outside the door and quality drops. Nonetheless... this place amazing. Stumbled in State Fare with my husband on a Tuesday morning. Every dish they bought out was delicious. And Tammy, our waitress, she was great! Definitely going back for brunch!

Yelp
Monique!! Great service and tended the bar exceptionally!! Quiet off day @1130am! I really love that breakfast options are available after 11. By the looks of the photo... we well enjoyed our impromptu day date. For your taste buds, the shrimp n grits were delicious buttery, a little spice, chorizo and shrimp were cooked perfect with the best sautéed peppers n onions. I typically just get the dish without the chorizo..but he enjoyed! The cream of crab soup doesn't have much crabmeat, but I added a few seasoned shrimp and wall... GONE!! THE DRINKS WERE MADE JUST RIGHT!! Stop on in and eat Great!!

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch and loved it! Plenty of parking on site which is not a given in this area. They are currently doing all day happy hour on Tuesdays while the govt is shutdown - 50% off apps and anything from the bar. 20% grat added before discount. A steal! The food and drinks were delightful - we had the potstickers, crispy Brussels sprouts, and crab dip. Our server was attentive and friendly, and the drinks were excellent. Plenty of tables inside and they were jumping! There is a bar area as well with TVs. We enjoyed our lunch here and will be back!

Yelp
This is my first time going to state fair. It was really nice inside. It was definitely not what I expected! There's a full bar, nice decor, outside seating. It was pretty spacious and the crowd was pretty controllable. My friend ordered the mozzarella sticks that were huge and so tasty! I got the deviled eggs (so good), the chicken and waffles which and mimosa was basic, but good and got the job done. Definitely had to give a review because our waiter Colin was great. I would definitely return.

Yelp
It's official, I will not return to this establishment! How ridiculous. The last time I went to State Fair, I sat at the bar completely unacknowledged While others came up was acknowledged and offered drinks and police orders. I finally got up and left out. But my friend wanted to meet and Catonsville, I selected two other restaurants before we decided to go to state fair. This is only after we went to the first restaurant and it was completely dead and they didn't have a bar. We walked into State Fare and all of the bar seats were taken so we decided to sit at a table next to the window since the whole restaurant was able to order happy hour. I will skip my normal review and focus on how absurd it was that they charged us gratuity based on the full menu price. They really tried to be slick and charge us the full price and then give us a discount for the happy hour prices so that they could charge gratuity based upon the full amount of the items. They also tried to be slick because they do not have a happy hour menu, instead they use their regular menu and tell you everything is half off of apps and drinks. Another way for them to be conniving and deceptive. On the bottom of the menu it does state a service charge will be added for groups and happy hour, which the manager was QUICK to state and point out but it is not clear. He also stated they have it written and posted in the front (which we never saw) It should clearly state a service charge will be added to the full price of each dish. Shady practices will only get you so far and I'm pretty sure they have been dependent upon patrons not reading their bills or calculating their service charge personally. When our server brung our bill over I asked for two so that we could pay separately. She made it seem as if it was going to be a problem so I asked her if we could separate it on her tablet/POS thingy majiggy and I would just pay for my items. She rung me up and presented the POS to me and it only had a price on it. I went ahead and paid and then asked her to show me the items I paid for because as I was doing the math in my head as the payment was going through, it wasn't adding up correctly. How did two drinks and one appetizer now become $30? That didn't seem correct for a $18 bill. I asked her where was the list of my items I ordered so that I could double check exactly what I was being charged for. She had some trouble getting it and printed out my receipt instead. That is when I noticed how they rung up my bill. My friend was also calculating her items when I mentioned it beva sure thought her bill was higher than it should be also. When the manager came over, I can see in his eyes that he was anxiously awaiting to give us his to us his spiel after we spoke. He was very defensive and didn't offer any reprieve which help me realize he has this conversation many times with patrons. When my friend pointed out that it was dishonest and she had a lawyer, he was quick to state they have a lawyer also and that really made me clutch my pearls because he definitely was here for it. Won't be back but y'all enjoy

Yelp
Came here for my High School alumni festivities. Had a great time seeing old friends. And on top of that the food was awesome. We came around 8 on a Friday evening before it got packed. They had a DJ too. My friend and I shared the Big Mac egg rolls. I didn't really like them. I think it had too much sauce in it. Next was the Brussel sprouts, they were crispy and very well seasoned. My favorite was the crab pretzel. It was so good! This is my go to but I probably wouldn't get it again lol! But I'll be back again, everything was good and service was awesome and it was really busy.

Yelp
The happy hour can't be beat! Half off all liquor, wine, beer and speciality cocktails. Half off all appetizers! That's a great price, considering the food isn't the star here. I tried the half Maryland crab, half cream of cream. Yes! Half pound of steam shrimp - Yes, we're rather bland. They were steamed with onions but no evidence of d Bay. That was an easy fix. The mussels- an absolutely not. They were either old or over steamed. Rubbery, smelled and tasted like the ocean. I sent them back. The bartender apologized and took them off the bill. Great service, outside seating, friendly patrons. I'll add it to my regular places to visit for happy hour.

Yelp
Visited State Fare for a late dinner Monday night. Luckily they are open late (bar until 2am) and their kitchen stays open until 10pm (some nights they have a later night menu after 10pm). On Mondays they have burger night with burgers and a side starting at $14. They give you a burger card to fill out choosing from a variety of protein and toppings. I ordered the chicken sandwich with mayo, lettuce, tomato, cheese, a fried egg and bacon. The fried egg and bacon was an upcharge. My boyfriend ordered the old bay wings. We sat at the bar. There was a lot of seats and tables available. They had some sports games showing on the tvs behind the bar. The service was good and the bartender was attentive. Definitely check them out if you're in the area! They have brunch and some nights there is a dj! And you can't beat burger night on Mondays, Whiskey Wednesday and Wing Thursday!

Yelp
Stopped by for a late dinner and drinks after a round of golf! We had a flatbread and loaded tots and both came out really good! Love a good balsamic glaze on the Margherita Flat Bread. We both had an old fashioned, one smoked and the bartender did a great job making it look pretty! Had a decent amount of bar space and seating inside, we had a good time.

Henry Y.

Yelp
We went to State Fare for happy hour, which is a great value. All appetizers and drinks are half price! Our wait person kindly told us about that deal and explained that 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill - that way we didn't accidentally add another 20% on top of that. The restaurant has a good vibe - paintings of rick musicians adorn the walls.

Yelp
Brunch was great. The shrimp and grits were savory. Drinks not too sweet or strong. Good customer service.

Yelp
Came for whisky Wednesday. The food was good the drinks were good. The service was ok. The chairs were wobbly. Easy parking. Whisky Wednesday is a great opportunity to do a tasting of whisky's. The vibe was chill. Cozy neighborhood pub feel.

Yelp
DON'T COME HERE!!!!!!! This place is a scam! This was my first time going on a Thursday which is all you can eat wings and I was highly disappointed! The waitress informed me that the wings for the bottomless option was $20 and that it was a 20% gratuity on the wings which would've been about four dollars. As you can see on the receipt, they literally charged me 20% for the whole table, which was not what was mentioned. For all of this I would have just gotten the regular wings for $15 as I purchased this for a kid! Because of the wing deal, they charge the whole table $14 and gratuity which would not have been added if it weren't for the wings. As you can see, there were only two orders placed, and only half of the wings were eaten in the first order as she did not like the honey old bay wings. I told the waitress that she did not explain that, in which she explained "Oh Sorry, I should have explained this better!" But next time I will explain it better. What kind of foolishness is that? Oh and after speaking to the manager about this, his response was very dismissive. He said "Oh yea all of our specials, bottomless brunch and any deals are 20%." When I informed him that this was not what mentioned he said "Yeah! Sorry!" This was highly unprofessional. This was a restaurant in which I have patronized several times over the years but never on one of these deal days! I knew about the 20% for brunch and happy hour only! Because of their response for not communicating clearly, I will never visit this establishment again and will not recommend them to anyone again! I am highly disappointed!!!!!

Yelp
Still of my favorite places around! First started coming years ago. I don't come as often as I would like, but I'll be changing that. The service is always great. I mostly come for the bourbon/whiskey selection. Particularly "Whiskey Wednesday," which starts at 8 p.m., and features 50% off any bourbon/whiskey drink. This is so worth it. My fave is the 1907. Jimmy is great - ask for him! I'll be back soon for brunch.

Yelp
Popped in to meet an old friend of my wife. Came in without any expectations. It was early in the day and their happy hour already started. The bar was full and spirits in this joint felt good. Ample space and the tables were also populated. Greater as you walked in the door and staff was great, attentive and on point. Like the we on it. Having just in the days dined at national harbor, I must admit the food got me good. Had to drive back to my and the food, sweet tea gave me flavor, love and the energy to drive back up. With people we know in the area , this will be a redo experience should me make it back. Our server was on point. Sorry I forgot you name for a shout out. But State Fair, y'all know who served the gent and 2 ladies. One lady with a colorful bonnet and seemingly spirit! Please pass on the flowers to our hostess!

Yelp
I'm pretty sure we've been to a State Fare as part of a Yelp event but it's been a long time. We were hungry and annoyed after dealing with Lowe's and this was close by. Even eating at prime time we were quickly seated. The space is open and clean. I will say for a place named state fare and with MD flag to go bags to have big pop art artists on the wall just doesn't make a ton of thematic sense. Seems like a missed opportunity to have location specific decor. Our server was great. Decent drink options and a well stocked bar. They even made one of their mocktails with alcohol for me. Very tasty. Food was really good. A solid turkey BLT triple decker. Hubby got the wrap with Mac and cheese. The kid got Choco chip pancakes. Props for having breakfast all day for kids. Definitely on the Catonsville list.
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
The location was very clean and the service was professional and quick. I recommend the Crab pretzel (Deelish) and the Turkey Club was big and incredibly delicious. I say drop in and check it out yourself

Yelp
Came for brunch with friends. The patio is a really chill spot with ample shade. You could go bottomless with mimosas or crushes. While we had a lovely time, everyone agreed the food was just ok.

Yelp
Attentive bar tenders and food came fast. Nice ambiance and the DJ was doing a good job. Big sticks (pause): 10/10 must get! The breading is nice and has a kick to it. Reisling: 8/10 Honey old bay wings: 7/10

Yelp
Came in for Whiskey Wednesday for the first time and definitely enjoyed myself. It starts at 8 on for half price whiskey and cocktails made with whiskey. I got there a little early so had a beer and got something to nibble on. I had the crab cake egg rolls. The rice was absolutely delicious and I liked that most of all from the meal. The egg rolls were so so. Had a decent flavor but a lot of shells in the crab meat. I ate two and took the other two home. I finished off all of the rice but tossed the crab cakes when I got home. My whiskey drink of the evening was the New York Sour. It was a interesting take on the traditional whiskey sour. It had a dash of red wine on top for color. The flavor was good. I didn't even notice the wine. It was a good experience and I would definitely come back for whiskey Wednesday.

Yelp
Take your money elsewhere for various reasons. For one no matter if its a weekday or weekend no matter the time of day as soon as your seated you can see the filth everywhere. Tables dirty, floor full of previois guests crumbs and food, dirty napkins under feet.. just nasty. Don't even think about going to the bathroom. DISGUSTING. Came on a Saturday afternoon, a Friday night, and a Thursday evening all within the last 30 days and the bathroom was the same EACH TIME. Toilet paper all over floor. Paper towels all over floor and countertop. Nasty dirty toilets. Graffiti written on inside door of stalls. DISGUSTING! Can only imagine what the kitchen looks like if the bathroom looks this way CONSISTENTLY. Food is subpar at best. Never fresh. Thrown together. Ordered "All American Burger" yesterday which is "smash burger patties" both dry as hell and not good. Lettuce not fresh. Yellowing and not fresh green. Wanted to try and order something else as the burger was unsatisfying and was denied by the so called "manager" who was at the host stand (male/ hispanic descent). I asked for a kids meal by my waiter who was very pleasant throughout the experience whom brought it over. Once she walked away he randomly singled my table out and kneeled down to ask if he could help with anything. Asked to order an item from this menu as I wanted a small portion of food after consuming an adult entree and was flat out told NO. Excuse me? He said you can order sides not anything off this menu. I overexplained how adult entrees were ordered and will be billed so whats the issue and asked if he was going to turn down money because of it being from the kids menu. His reply "YES". ( he also never addressed or introduced himself as a manager i had to ask our waiter who this random person was and why he came over to speak to me) Moral of the story. This "manager" lacks basic customer service skills and tried to debate me over something that ultimately wouldve resulted in this establishment making more $$ off of additional orders. Bad for business. Dirty business. Subpar food. Puhlease. Plenty more restaurants that would NEVER operate this way! Completely turned off and will not be returning.

Yelp
I think State Fare is trying hard to be everything to everyone. It's a top notch bar and a hit or miss restaurant. Menu is large which I think is part of the problem. If you think its going to be Portallis east you will be disappointed. What we loved about Portallis was it was a limited menu but was extremely well executed, not so much the case here. We've been twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. Had the "Bookmaker" salad for brunch and it was mediocre at best,( if you can't make it close to Sabatino's don't call it a Bookmaker) For dinner I had the Oysters Rockefeller that was made with frozen oysters, not good. The place could really use a raw bar with fresh seafood. The wife had the crab dip which was just okay. If you're going for a cocktail it's great food is a crap shoot.

Lu G.

Yelp
I've never been to a restaurant so unabashedly terrible. Every time a server approached us, it was a different one. The one that took over after we were sat introduced himself by asking if we'd been here before, then said himself, "the service is terrible." He then made no effort to provide good service. Mid-conversation he put his hand in front of our faces to refill the cup I was still holding and drinking from, then gave attitude when we were confused about why his hand was in front of our faces. We weren't given utensils with our food. The music was EDM remixes of Michael Jackson songs, with the volume up way too loud. The people at the table next to us were waiting for their check from the time we sat down to almost when we left 30-40 mins later. That was the exact same experience we had the last time we were here, they took our card and all the servers huddled around the host stand talking for over 20 minutes before we got it back. Bad food, bad service.

Maria B.

Yelp
Omgggg! Collin was amazing and attentive. He made sure everything was quick, and made sure my group was taken care of. Thank you Collin !!!!

Yelp
We visited State Fare for HH. I waited for service at the bar. After a few minutes a bar tender came over, we were asked what we wanted to drink, we told him & he never came back. We watched him serve other guests. He didn't even look in our direction. This has happened to us before at this restaurant. The bar tender had been at State Fare for a long time & if you are not in the 'click' the service is crap.

Yelp
I went on a Saturday afternoon. When we first walked in it wasn't too crowded but it definitely started to pick more while we were there. My waitress was really busy but she was polite and checked in sometimes until the end because it was so busy. The ambiance was chill. A lot of artwork from different music artist. The music was down really low so you mostly just heard people talking. I ordered the endless mimosas and crush for 20 and I got chicken and waffles. The chicken tenders were huge and the waffle tasted like it had cinnamon in it. The food was alright. It was hot and fresh. The mozzarella stick were huge as well with a nice crunch. I would go back.

Federico L.

Yelp
Everything was excellent I was a little scared based on the reviews but the food was absolutely incredible. The star of the show was the crab pretzel. But everything we ordered was delicious. It also had nice outdoor seating and they brought out a water bowl for our dog.

Yelp
Until about a year ago, we were going to State Fare once a week. We've cut back and now haven't gone in months. The food is still pretty good overall, they update menu items regularly and food quality is great. But some of the prices have gone out of control. A bacon cheeseburger (I think it's a 1/4 lb. or maybe 1/3 lb) is $18. Their crab dip, which is my favorite appetizer, now only comes with 10 pita chips and if you want more it's $2 a batch. They raised prices on the kids menu, but they still use the old menu. Unfortunately, you can get a just as good or better meals throughout Catonsville. Still a fun place to go, just not as a regular spot (at least for me) One of their managers (I think his name is Jason) is also extremely unfriendly and can be confrontational. I've even seen him use profanity at other customers (not us, luckily).

Shawnte P.

Yelp
We went out for a work event to State Fare... OMG the food was delicious! I order the crab dip for an appetizer and Parmesan crusted salmon as my main dish... needless to say I was pleasantly impressed... the live DJ was good also. I was in no rush to leave!

Yelp
I wish this place was closer to me... On a whim a friend told me she was going and I was like hey why not. I made my way over there... a solid drive indeed. By the time I arrived, everyone was already finishing up their food, and they were sitting in a pleasant outdoor area. When I sat down, I observed the street that State Fare is along... it looks like it's poppin'! Maybe some day i will check it out. The day I was there, they had whiskey specials going on all night... and it was also karaoke! I had a bourbon drink that was much like an old fashioned... I forget the exact name, but it was delicious... absolutely delicious! Once karaoke got set up, we moved inside. I appreciated the manual tablet setup they had going for it. There was no paper to write on or app to download... just a tablet for all the things. The crowd was pretty light, and some songs I wanted to sing weren't there, but it was cool nonetheless! I would definitely go back to explore the food... my friends said it was awesome. And I can never turn down a brunch... it's just a drive, whew! I plan to return soon!

Sarah J.

Yelp
WOW!!! I wish I could give bartender RYAN 6 (SIX!!!) stars for service. I stepped away for a brief moment and I came back to my seat with my water already poured. He knows I don't drink but still keeps me hydrated. The food is delicious. Yander is also the best. I love this place. DJ Micah Diggs gets the place hopping with his beer pong tournaments on Tuesdays. ALL THE STARS FOR STATE FARE!

Yelp
Dined with a party of 15 and I thoroughly enjoyed. I forgot our writer's name but I had him before on a previous visit and he's very attentive and friendly. Knows the menu well. We were able to separate our payments by family seating which we all loved. We didn't really want to be seated indoors so we opted for a table in the tent area and they have floor heaters so it was perfect. Food - I ordered the rockfish bites and coleslaw which were just that. But the bites were delicious and had a little spicy kick. I'm not a big fan of coleslaw but it did taste too vinegary. Also pictured are the crab cake egg rolls and I was told they were good. I also had an order of Brussels sprouts which were roadted peffectly but i would havd preferred more seasoning. For drinks I had a strawberry lemon drop and that is my new favorite. It was really good. Pictured is the strawberry mocktail as well.

Mike C.

Yelp
Service was friendly and quick. Food was inconsistent. The stars of the show were the french fries with their pretty unique thick spiral cut, but also the sweet potato fries with an excellent and savory raspberry dipping sauce. Unfortunately, their vegetarian and vegan options were limited and we didn't much care for what we had. The harvest salad looked beautiful, but the main ingredient (squash) was under grilled and somewhat hard. The flatbread pizzas were a miss - cut into 5 triangular slices, each slice totally flopped, the dough providing no structure. The sauce was quite generic and the cheese was thinly layered and seemed of low quality. (When some shreds of cheese have not melted, you know something is off.) The flatbread was squirted with a ruinous amount of balsamic glaze.

Yelp
Man, j wish this spot was around when I lived in Catonsville, I would have been here every week!!! This is located where the Friendly's used to be for those in the know. Now this spot is open concept and super trendy with tons of outdoor seating and even a tent for bands to play under! This is a great location for brunch, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night fun!!! I highly recommend sharing their appetizers - the edamame and spicy and delicious but their wings may need to be put back into the fryer for a little longer! Overall, great spot and somewhere I will definitely revisit when I am in town!

Yelp
Knowledgeable bartenders! They both prepared me amazing lemon drops ( which I substituted the vodka for tequila ). I'll be back tonight lol!

Yelp
Food was delicious. Drinks were great. Service was a bit slow. We ordered: crab cake Benedict, old fashion, Bloody Mary, chicken tenders, deviled eggs, and loaded tots.

Yelp
Went to State Fare hoping for a good experience. Looked like a cool place from the outside. Once inside the hostess, servers, and bartenders were not Friendly at all. They acted as if they were the customer! Very rude first impression. Drinks were overpriced and very little alcohol taste to them. Food was so so. Wait time was HORRIBLE! Dirty bathroom. This place used to be a Friendly's back in the day. I once got a banana split from there and they served it without the banana!!! But at least the staff was polite and friendly. Sketchy people hanging around the parking lot. DRUGS??? Maybe. Need to have your head on a swivel. First time will be the last time. Watch your check with the add on tip and service fees policy.

Yelp
I want to like State Fare but I've been three times now and the food isn't the best. The second time I went for Brunch on a Sunday and ordered the Shrimp and grits. They just weren't good. Very salty and the gravy on top reminded me of a Thanksgiving turkey gravy. The shrimp were cooked fine and the grits were okay but the gravy messed it up for me. Overall, the dish just didn't sit well with me. I didn't finish it. The third time I went I again went for brunch on a Saturday morning with a group. We all ordered various things. The breakfast burrito, honey chicken biscuit sandwich, the standard meat, eggs and toast/waffle. Unfortunately, none of us were really that satisfied. I ordered the honey chicken biscuit. The chicken strips were flavorless and the way they present it is face up with honey drizzled on top. It just wasn't good to where I picked it a part and half way ate it. I did participate in the mimosa deal. They were okay and came out in thin plastic cups. I just wasn't impressed as I knew I wouldn't be. At least the bacon was good. The servers are always nice and it's always packed and busy but I guess it's just not right for my tastebuds. I haven't really tasted their drinks so maybe I'll sit at the bar one day. It's in the neighborhood and open late so I really want to like this place.

Yelp
Service is very good and fast, wish I could say the same for the food. Had the crab cake sandwich and crab soup , both bland and filler, the fries were the high point, my date cheesesteak sandwich which was mediocre at best. The ambience was very nice with outside seating , I think it could really be a lot better with the menu

Yelp
OMG! Met a friend here for lunch on the way home from DC with my husband and a great time! We didn't know it was happy hour, so it was even better! We ordered a few drinks and some appetizers, such as the pretzel crab, buffalo wings, fried brussel sprouts loaded tots and a chicken sandwich with ol' bay house chips! When I tell you that every single thing was amazing!!!!!??? Flavorful and so tasty! I had 2 tropical flavor mimosas and my friend had 2 special order margaritas and they were not only half price but so good!! The service was superb! I'm mad that I didn't take down the name of our waitress, because she was super sweet and super attentive and informative, but she was amazing!!! We live a few states away, but would absolutely stop by again, if in the area! The only thing I am super mad about is that, we were starving and I totally forgot to take pictures of the food!

Yelp
***4.5*** What a great place to visit in Catonsville. I was pleasantly surprised. Nice location. Plenty of parking. Outdoor space for drinking and dining larger than inside space. State Fair offers great selection of sought after Bourbon and Whiskeys. I like the selection of mixed drink offerings. I tried there Side Car and Old Fashion. There were pretty decent. I felt like I was missing something from both drinks. The food that came out looked great. I ordered their meatloaf dish. It was fantastic. It was probably one of the best meatloafs I have ever tried. The meal is well portioned. The whipped baked potato...best seasoned bake potato ever. I look forward to visiting again and trying different drinks.

Yelp
Great food and cocktails, and you can't beat the weekday happy hour. The wait staff is super pleasant and attentive. It's become my area go-to for meetups with friends or casual business conversations.

Yelp
I come here monthly for brunch and unfortunately yesterday i was greeted immediately with frowned faces and rude energy by someone guy who i would assume was the owner or manager on duty. Im aware that reservations aren't allowed on weekends so i decided to come same day and ask for a table of 15 . Rather than trying to accommodate the manager says it would be a 3 hour wait which i knew wasn't true i could tell just by this guys demeanor he didn't want to service us! Very arrogant and condescending.. to solve the problem i asked for two separate tables near each other and was able to be seated immediately.. rather than lie about wait times it would be nice to try to accommodate your customers especially because it was such a large party and gratuity is included so the waiter would have made out on the tips regardless!!! Dont know if ill ever be back

Yelp
Very nice outdoor dining atmosphere! Our server was attentive and welcoming. My party ordered chicken and waffles, a blackened smoked tuna wrap, breakfast quesadilla, crispy brussel sprouts, and a breakfast quiche. Everybody seemed to have enjoyed their food. I wasn't too crazy about the breakfast quiche but I would definitely return.

Yelp
I have tried to dine at State Fare on numerous occasions, but the wait is always long. Luckily, today I thought ahead and made my husband and I a reservation prior to just showing up. Great decision. I recall when this location was a Friendly's, it is not that big, but they have plenty of seating outside to accommodate diners during the warmer months. The decor is confusing, the wall are filled with pictures of rappers and rockstars, so I am not really sure what the theme is. Football was playing on the tv, so it was rather loud inside. But, the restaurant was clean and the wait staff was very friendly. It took us quite some time to get our food and we really didn't order meals that should have taken extended time to cook. The menu is typical bar food. Wings, burgers and salads. The key lime chili wings were ok, they cooked well, but lacked proper seasoning. The salad was good, but needed more dressing, certainly nothing to write home about. The drink was very tasty, but small for the price.
