I went to Freddie at the Lincoln park location to get my undercut trimmed. When I came in he immediately offered graphic work. It was such an amazing surprise! I have never loved my undercut more and I will definitely be back. He even trimmed the ends of my hair to keep them healthy! Thanks Freddie :)

This place is great. The online appointment system (or app!) makes finding a haircut with no wait a breeze. I’m a “wake up and need a haircut now” type of guy and I’ve never waited longer than later that day or the next to get in a chair. Jeff is my guy - best haircut in Chicago. I’ve been here several times and have had great service. Larissa was my usual and she is great but today I needed to come in for a last minute cut in the evening. I came towards the end of the night. Nicholas cut my hair. I kid you not, this was one of the best cuts I have ever had. I honestly had a great time. Nicolas was friendly and attentive. We had great convos and he really made sure I had a good cut. I would highly recommend him and will definitely be back for my next cut with him. I have a wedding this weekend to attend and he made me feel like a million bucks. Thank you!

I am an out of state student who needed a haircut as it was about that time. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist was so kind and very helpful. My stylist, Larissa Vetter, was absolutely the best barber I have ever had in my entire life. She made sure I felt comfortable and pleased with my haircut. I will definitely be coming back to this place in the future!

I've booked a few appointments at the Lincoln Park location, and I've been really impressed by the quality of service each time. I would definitely recommend Margaret in particular. Each haircut has been awesome, and more importantly, consistent and reliable. I will most definitely be coming back!

I’ve been seeing Larissa for over a year now and I never want to let anyone else cut my hair. As a queer femme it can be so difficult to find someone to recognize the vision of what you want but Larissa always hears me out, is so affirming, and gets me leaving looking fresh af. If you have a crazy bizarre idea she’ll work and you’ll leave feeling your best. Also I always love coming to see her she has such a great spirit and always so fun.

Jeff is by far one of the best barbers I’ve ever had. The prices for the services here are also very reasonable, being only slightly more expensive than a Sports Clips, Great Clips, etc. for a much better experience with a barber/stylist that takes their time and makes the experience enjoyable.

if you want a great haircut and beard trim with friendly service go to Danny at Lincoln park location on Webster. I followed him from Old Town location to Lincoln Park even though it was not as convenient because he is worth it.

My fiance went in a few months ago with a very specific example photo and came back looking like Reggie Belafonte from Surf's Up. Throughout the haircut the barber repeatedly said, "Oh man, I've messed up," and ended up giving him a massive discount. Basically, if you have thick, straight hair, avoid avoid avoid. Two stars because of the discount and how hard we laughed when he took off his hat at home.

If you still have a full head of hair, I strongly recommend you do NOT get it cut at this place.

I have been coming here since I went to school nearby at DePaul (pre-Covid). I've had my hair cut & beard cut here by several barbers, and hands down, the best one in the shop is Nick. The guy is a wizard with difficult hair. My hair is pretty complex, with multiple weird cowlicks and uneven thickness throughout. My beard is also particular and requires extra attention. Nick has been doing an incredible job with both for about a year, and never once have I had a bad cut with him. If you need a good cut, check out Nick!

The cut was good; their availability made it easy to slip in quick. Spent $40 including tip which feels pretty appropriate to me, but there were two significant issues that will stop me from giving them any further business. If you're a student, keep reading; this will especially apply to you. 1. My barber, Charity, was hardly conversational. If I'm going to sit and let somebody cut my hair for half an hour, I'd like to do something other than stare out the window the entire time. It was clear whenever I tried to engage in any kind of conversation that she just wasn't interested. The social interaction side of it was stiff and awkward the entire time; I was clearly just another customer to whom she was selling a service. This is further evidenced by the following, much more significant con: 2. I noticed there was a Student Discount option on the list of services and their pricing. I had already mentioned that I'm 30 years old and going back for my undergraduate degree, so I asked if I could use my ID for that. She sidestepped​ her way around it; first saying, "It's only for like Freshmen through Seniors," to which I responded, "I'm a Junior." Then she started listing the average age ranges for typical undergraduates, stumbling around her explanation again, until I said, "So, there's an age limit?" She replied, "Yes, that's what I'm trying to say. We can't give it to everyone, you know?" ... Yes,​ you absolutely can. It's a student discount that explicitly stated that you need a school ID for eligibility. I had mine on me. That apparently was irrelevant because I was (and these are her words), "over 25." The whole point of the board over the register is to display services provided, how much they cost, and what discounts are applicable to whom, right? Are there some senior citizens to whom you do not give the discount? If they just recently became classified as a senior citizen, do you tell them that they need, like, a walker or something? Do they have to be more stereotypically old? I thought this was irresponsible, childish, and terrible business practice. I can take a lot without getting annoyed, but I was blatantly lied to in order to pay full price. That's why I left earlier today feeling more frustrated than happy with a fresh, new hairdo.

They do a nice job , it's about $40 for a haircut plus tip. They shave your neck in the back, wash your hair and do a hot towel. Nice overall. Often have appointment available.

Not the best experience. I got a haircut/shave combo. Right off the bat my barber looked like he was in a bad mood. I felt like he was rushed even though I was early to my appointment. Right away I was not relaxed. But I kept a positive attitude hoping the haircut would come out great. I was wrong. The top did not look clean and he didn't take his time. The shave was okay but he trimmed my beard before shaving and when I left and got to my car I noticed he left no much lose hair on my neck. He made no attempt to clean me up or make me look presentable. I had to go home and shower. I'll be going to a different place tomorrow to get my hair cleaned up.

I called this location this week. They made an appointment for me, and then never put me on the schedule. The customer service experience at State Street Barbers is not worth dealing with and I don't recommend going here for your haircut. I have gone to this location for almost 8 years, and have always gone to the same person. She is great, and I really didn't want to go to another barber. I think that if you make a customer service mistake that you should have offered a discounted haircut or something to correct for the mistake made by this location. The prices here are going up, and the service is going down. I don't recommend State Street Barbers.

Butchered my hair and my beard. Literally did the opposite of what I asked on several occasions. Really disappointed.

This is the first haircut where they didn't take a little of my masculinity. I've always had my haircut at uni/metrosexual salons, with the sexy/stupid, gum-snapping receptionist and the oh-so-gay stylists. There it is, the operative word "stylist". I am in no need to have my hair styled, designed, primped, fussed, teased, colored, or other wise played with; I would like my haircut. Enter State Street Barbers. State Street Barbers is an over all great experience. From the dark wood and dark green interior, complete with rotating barber pole, to the leather and wood barbers chairs, everything say this a place where a man can get his haircut. My barber was quick (about 20 minutes) and professional but the best part is yet to come. A hot lather shave for the back of my neck finished of with quick vibrating massage for my shoulders. I am a new man. Thank you State Street Barbers for making me feel that I don't have to tuck my twig and berries between my legs to get a good haircut. P.S. You can also get a hot lather shave.

Went in for $75 haircut and shave. What a joke.seats don't even lay flat so you can be comfortable. Haircut was decent but shave was a joke. If you're looking for a relaxing, comfortable , and close shave this place is not for you. People working there were nice enough but I'd rather have a total a$$hole give me a great shave rather than the other way around.

Old school barber with a new school feel. Only been once so far but that's enough to know this is my kind of place. Traditional in the way they do hair and contemporary in the way they take care of patrons. First of all, ask for Katie A. She's the best. Seriously the best. Every cut includes a wash and a straight edge neck cleanup. What's better than the straight edge at the end? I wish I needed to get my haircut everyday just for that. It's like the happy ending of the haircut world, but with a razor blade...ummm... They also have coffee, not groundbreaking but really nice. I'm gonna go back for a barber shave. I'll re-review after that.

Have been here twice thus far; each time I was in need of a much needed haircut to take my shaggy hair back to being clean cut and professional. Have gone on weekdays both times thus far and of course scheduled in advance as I wanted to make I could be accommodated. This place is very CONSISTENT. Both times I have had different barbers but both were fun and good conversationalists. I left each time looking much better than when I came in and they were kind enough to give me a complimentary wash after my haircut which was clutch as I was headed directly to a Yoga class at CSHY. Strongly recommend this place for a no-frills approach to a great haircut - you'll be looking good and feeling good after! What else could you want in a barbershop??

I just had my first cut from state street barbers. Christian did an excellent job, much better job on the sides and backs than other places I've gone too. The front was a little too short... I brought a picture. I'd have to say he was a very cool guy and did a great job in a short amount of time. However, this was the most PAINFUL haircut I had ever experienced... by far. He seemed to be ripping out my hair while pulling up my hair to cut it evenly... it looks great but it was sooo painful. Also my neck is still burning from the knife shave but it's very clean. All in all, I'd recommend this place for a great professional haircut for $24. He also recommended some good styling gel I bought. The decor is cool and also there are drinks out there which is cool The only problem I have is that over 10+ people have said "oh you got a haircut" to me... and only 1 said nice haircut afterwards... I'm going to try the other State Street Barbers next in Wrigleyville.

I can't remember the name of the barberette, but she did a great job. For $27 they do a lot more than most other places. I felt like it was a worth investment. The normal package is a haircut, followed by a shampoo, neck shave, and a neck massage. The neck shave was done with a straight razor. This was a nice touch. I also really like the shampoo afterwords. I always have to ask for this. I don't get why more places don't do this. Who wants to spend the rest of their day with hair trimmings falling out of their hair, itching their neck and ears? Lastly, they have some real nice styling product. I didn't get the shaping cream my barberette recommended, but I kind of wish I did. I'll get some when I come back. I believe they also carry Art of Shaving products, which are top notch.

Went here for a straight razor shave; my first time trying this. It's quite a relaxing, enjoyable process. Several applications of hot towels, some pre-shave lubricants, hot lather, etc. After I was done I couldn't stop touching my cheeks -- they felt great. I got a little bit of razor burn in a couple of places, but I suppose this is unavoidable. My barber was very careful and deliberate, so it wasn't as if he rushed the job or anything. The shave was $40 (not including tip) -- which seemed a little steep, but I'm glad I gave it a try. The shop itself was clean and comfortable and the staff was very friendly and professional. Maybe I'll go back for a haircut sometime...

I came here on a Friday afternoon thinking I could possible just walk-in and get a haircut. I couldn't. There was a very minimal 30 min wait which I used to read some of the great selection of men's magazines on the table. When my time came, I was very delighted to have a barber that was personal and i'm sure has a great story. My usual haircut location is Hair Cuttery on Halsted where I typically have a new "stylist" (i use that term loosely) each visit. I will never spend another dime at hair cuttery.

You can find great men's haircuts here for a great price. The student discount definitely sweetens the deal. The barbers usually provide great results no matter who they are, but turnover can be a little rough if you're expecting to see the same person every time. The online reservation system is well organized and easy to use. A bit of advice: keep your receptionists employed so Amanda can focus on cutting my damn hair

Went here for the first time yesterday. Had an appointment with Louis who was very nice and gave me a great haircut. Consistently asked if what he was doing was right which made a lot of sense. $30 haircut is a fair price for the great service, good vibe and haircut. Definitely going back

Decent barber shop but mighty over priced. $32 for a basic trim to the point where it wasn't even noticeable. Not mad about that just unsure why it was so expensive when I was only there for 20 minutes. Granted you do get a hot towel and a hair rinse but all in all it was it worth the price. The shop was nice and clean and had great appeal but it starts and ends there. Therefore I will not be going back.

Amanda is an excellent choice when coming to State street Barbers! This place is very nice barber shop in Lincoln Park. I travel all the way from Pilsen just to see Amanda about once a month. I enjoy the hot towel treatment and she always gets my hair just how I like it. Definitely check out this place. And if you can grab a spot on Amanda's schedule, you will not be disappointed! You can make appointments online also, which was a big plus for me.

In need of a new locale for my haircuts, I ventured to State Street based on the reviews by our fellow members, however, I was sadly disappointed. After years of having my hair cut with scissors by someone who knew what they were doing, the barber took his clippers straight to my head and before I knew it, it was too late. It could have been an off day for this gentleman, however, I most likely will not be returning to this establishment. Apart from being able to drink a beer while getting your hair cut (which you can do at a lot of places today), I would not recommend this place.

I almost always get a good cut from State Street Barbers. The price is pretty reasonable for the quality provided --- a good bridge between a more budget-oriented barber and a full blown $40 per cut salon. The place is always very clean and it has a very friendly astmosphere. A cut will cost you about $21. The only downsides are that there seems to be constant turnover, so you have to trust a new barber almost every time unless you pin point a regular cutter that you like. That said, I'm usually very happy with the cut I receive.

I've tried several places in Chicago and State Street is the by far the best. Relaxed and chill, I don't think I'll head anywhere else. I've always had Anne cut my hair, so I can't speak to any other stylists, but she is great. Go on Friday and get a free beer while you get your hair cut.

If I could give a - star review...... Booked appointment online. Drove in the snow and was told by the receptionist "the website has glitches" and that there are no openings. She also lied and said she tried to call me. With as many options in 60614 I would avoid this place.

This review is specifically for Christian, he is fantastic! My boyfriend has gone to far too many barbers in this city - and always ends up with something he (or I) can't stand about the cut. He is simple, and keeps his hair very short on the sides with some length on top - you would be amazed at how easy it can be to screw this up! He has been going to Christian for about a year now, and it has been such a great experience. Thanks Christian - you are the best!!

The stylists are weak; interior is nice.

I've bounced from barber to stylist to barber all over town looking for somewhere I feel comfortable. This place does it for me. Cedric is the only person I've ever told what I want and he does it exactly right every time without fail. Decent price for the "Signature Cut", considering it includes a shampoo, neck shave, and shoulder massage. Also free touchups if you ever need it, which is great. Highly recommend.

Refused to honor an appointment I booked for my son. Unable to get in touch with a manager. Person on duty was hostile.

I'm not sure why 39 reviews of this place are "not recommended" by yelp, but the negative reviews are absolutely accurate. I've given this place more chances than I would have liked, but only because I live a block and a half away and it's marketed as a "barbershop." While the latter may technically be true, I'm not sure how many, if any stylists here are actual barbers. As for the haircut I got today, it was terrible. My hairstyle is relatively easy, but having it done in 15 minutes while the hairstylist is yapping away about God knows not really paying attention to what she's doing will definitely screw it up. I could tell my cut was uneven after the hairstylist was done but I have really dark hair so I know I can get away with some unevenness. But after I asked her to wash out the loose hair and she sat me back down in the chair, I saw how bad it really was. The length was all over the place. I was truly shocked at how bad it was. The hairstylist knew it too so she started trimming it again (odd after we just washed it) to make it even. It still was pretty bad, but at that point, I just wanted to get out of there. Now, paying the normal $30 for the hack job I got would have been aggravating, but being stuck with an additional $2 surcharge WITHOUT BEING TOLD BEFOREHAND for a supposed senior hairstylist (I would not call this lady a barber by any means) pushed me over the edge. If that was what a senior "barber" does, I can understand all the negative reviews. Don't get me wrong, I'd gladly pay $32 for a haircut if it were done properly. But what I got today was not worth $32 or even $30. Either way, I paid the surcharged price, tipped and walked out. But, that will definitely be the last time. In my opinion, this just isn't how a neighborhood business should be run, period. There is a legitimate barbershop a few blocks away from here (I won't name it out of fairness). The hours are less than accommodating, which is why I go less often, but the BARBERS are awesome and they actually care about what your hair looks like. I'm going to start waking up at the butt crack of dawn on Saturday to make it. Avoid this place though. Like someone else said, there are plenty of options around here. They may be less convenient, but at least you won't walk away frustrated with what's on top of your head for three or four weeks.

One of the worst experiences I have had in Chicago. Cut was equivalent to Supercuts/Hair Cuttery and was much more expensive for such crappy quality. Basically they took clippers to my hair and 15 minutes later I walked out with the worst looking heard of hair possible (or what was left of it). Definitely will never go back.

This is the best men's haircut you can get in the city. They always give you a traditional neck shave as a nice finishing touch. The staff is friendly and fun. Shawn, my hair cutter, always pays attention to detail, so I can walk away with a nice cut every time. Plus, their online booking system is super convenient.

I would give this place 0 stars if that were an option. Sat in the seat, was asked what I wanted, explained I simply want a normal cut, nothing crazy, just trim it up everywhere. Only specific thing I asked was to not cut the sides any shorter and leave my hair as-is over my ears. First thing he did is take the clippers and shave one of the sides over my ear. He then cut some on the sides and did nothing on the top of my head. After approx. 5 minutes, he pulled out a mirror and asked me how it looked. There were crooked lines on the side that he planned on leaving until I pointed out. He then cleaned that area up a bit more and said he was finished. After getting home, showering, the right side is 1/4" shorter over my ear than the left side, and the top and left side is uneven. Worst POS 10 minute haircut I ever had.

I hate mullets. If anything, I want it long in front and short in back. After one place that gave me a Justin Bieber, I got a coupon for here. Friendly place, comfy chairs. Stylist listened pretty well. My cut definitely a little butcher than I wanted, but I grew into it and it looks good now. Much better than Bieber.

Good haircut at a good price. $27 apparently is cheap, when you don't have the word "clips" or "cuttery" in the name. I had an 1130 appt, i was seated right away, im pleased with everything, including a good neck shave. There was a Yelp! promotion that someone(?) put on this website that they had no idea about--saving $6 if you go before noon. That's why i went before noon and they looked at me like i had 8 heads. I guess not their fault but who else would put a "deal" up.....

Really poor customer service, they refused to let me look in a mirror while I had my haircut, even after asking several times, my barber came up with some excuse saying that he'd have to move the mat on the floor around - bizarre. He continued working on my hair without asking my preferences and I was unable to see what was going on to correct him. Should have just stood up and walked out. Surprise, surprise, it was a really shoddy haircut.

Don't waste your time... too many good places in the area. Showed up for my 11:30 appointment this morning (an appointment that I made yesterday) and the woman at the front desk told me my appointment was at 11:00AM (which was incorrect). Rather than try to fix the situation or even apologize, she continued to act like their mistake was my fault. Went to Mario's at Southport and Fullerton instead, great place and great haircut

High quality hair cuts in a nice environment. I've been going ever since the first shop opened. Plus the year-long membership is a good deal (and forces me to get a haircut on a regular basis). As for clippers, if you don't want them just ask the barber. The downside: turnover in the barbers, but I have always found at least two to go to on a regular basis.

I have gone to St Street Barbers for almost two years. I always get a great cut. The atmosphere is excellent. As a guy changing barbershops can be a traumatic experience, Katie has cut my hair every time and she always does an outstanding job.

I don't like getting my hair cut. In Chicago for a wedding, they found time on a busy Saturday for me. Nicole was great! Personable and understanding. She listened to what I wanted, offered her creativity and really gave me a stylish cut that fit me. My wife was thrilled with how nice I looked. Ask for Nicole.
