Chef S’Arto Chartier-Otis Brings Healthy Food to Mile End’s Machina Gym | Eater Montreal

"Connected to a trendy new gym in Mile End, the Machina Smart Bar is a healthy lunch counter run by Chef S’Arto Chartier-Otis that serves smoothies, salads, and a few hot lunch dishes each day and also retails health supplements and fitness wear in a small retail shop. Recruited by the gym (he does not own Machina), Chartier-Otis sees the project as a deliberate shift from fine dining toward bringing nicer food to a depanneur/cafeteria concept, focusing on dishes you can eat and feel full of energy all day. Offerings cater to gym-goers and include energizing items like daal and bibimbap, plenty of vegetables and whole grains, proteins available as add-ons (chicken, tempeh, and albacore tuna, not beef), matcha drinks and “superfood” smoothies (no coffee), with most dishes priced under ten dollars. The counter occupies a shiny space with big windows facing Mile End’s former industrial zone and is open at 5455 de Gaspé, number 105, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, though some items are only served around lunch hours." - Tim Forster

Good audio quality and TV in private rooms. The touch screen is a bit hard to use and kind of confusing. When browsing English songs, there aren't a lot of options for a wide breadth of artists. Our private room also got very hot, and there wasn't a way to adjust the fan. There isn't a great alcohol selection - you need to buy an entire bottle of wine instead of just a single can or small bottle of alcohol.

My friend likes this place and I think it’s fine. They charge us from exactly our reserved starting time even if we didn’t arrive on time and call them that we need to postpone it. I am fine with it because this place is pretty cheap, but also not a big fan.

Karaoke was a fun experience, but I booked for 3:00pm, when they open, and no staff arrived until 3:20. We were not given a refund for the time we missed out on…… Be careful to book no earlier than 3:30.

This place is greedy as hell and if you have the time to find a better karaoke station, do it. First, they charge you a mandatory 18% service fee even though they don’t give ANY service. The lady at the front desk gave us a dead microphone, was rude, and wouldn’t remind us when our time was up. It’s like they are secretly hoping you go past your time limit so they can charge you extra fees. Second, their karaoke system was old, slow, and had no current songs. You also can’t connect to Spotify because their system was broken. You’d expect a place that charges you at LEAST $69/hr (excluding all the secret fees they add) for a small room would have connection to Spotify, but I guess not. Finally, I’d like to mention that if you order food/drinks or bring outside food/drinks INCLUDING WATER, you’d be charged an extra $100. They had me at the food and beverages part, but water? You’ve got to be kidding me. Please find a karaoke place that will treat their guests better.

UPDATED: Place was clean, they updated their music system so there’s more recent songs. Warning though: they WILL NOT let you bring in drinks and food from outside in. Not even water in a separate bottle, they’ll take it out for the remainder of your session and you might even be fined if I remember the paper we signed. My friends and I walked in yesterday for a birthday celebration, and we were fairly loud. They had a good selection of music available though not up to date by about (my best guess) 3-ish months? The place was clean and my friends and I had fun. I can't say anything about the food because I didn't try any. The bottom floor (where the bathrooms are) was just very chilly. Overall, I had a good time.

Cool little spot in Chinatown for some karaoke. Prices are great for non peak times before 8pm. Service was great with flexible time options and they replaced a dead microphone for us with a working one without hassle. Only gripe is that the song finder is incredibly difficult to use. Most of the songs are from 2018. Otherwise a great and fun experience!

We got charged $10 in extra fees, screen didn’t work, workers didn’t help or explain how the system worked, workers not very accommodating or helpful. Not worth it. They automatically add on 18% gratuity after doing nothing and barely showing you where the room is. Instead of this place try Viva Karaoke (also in the area, higher ratings, better service).

Party of 6- aug2023: its an affordable place to have a good time with friends, food options are not great unless you are very hungry and will eat anything recommend coming on a full stomach. Music option are hard to navigate and some songs have lyrics others don’t. The atmosphere is cute for what you pay for pretty affordable if you go for the karaoke but be careful buying too many drinks it’ll rank up your tab.
