Steak 'n Shake

Overall an ok experience. The manager was pleasant, but the food was warm at best. FYI they only have kiosks for placing orders and counter pick-up (no servers), if that makes a difference to you.

It is a fast food place and you order from a kiosk, so unless I am asking for something, I will not rate the service. Let's talk about the food. Steak and shake is the original smash burger. In the fast food world, the burgers are my favorite ... the mustard-pickle relish is yum. They have also changed to all beef tallow grease for the fries and in the process have gone from great to greater! Love this place.

Came in for lunch today. Burger was great. Fries were hot and crispy and the strawberry shake was excellent. 10/10 great job!! Highly recommend and I will be returning very soon. Very impressed!

I only got a 3 piece chicken finger and large fries. The chicken fingers were small for the price and the large fry wasn't even filled half way. It tasted great, but the price for the amount was disappointing.

My food was good. Came out hot. Portions were good. But holy cow, the entire restaurant itself was disgusting. Not ONE napkin in any of the napkin dispensers and when I asked an employee if we could get some she RUDELY replied that “someone is on it!” While walking away from me. Went to the bathroom to wash my hands and take my 5 year old potty. Toilets were DISGUSTING and no soap in the dispensers so couldn’t even properly wash my hands. And the floors were so sticky. I used to love going to Steak ‘n Shake but this will be the last time for me. Very very disappointed in the upkeep. Felt dirty just sitting there eating.

Holy cow this is BEST location I have been too. Like WTH!!!! Very clean, service was quick and food was excellent and made to order. I love the kiosk because then I know it should be made correctly. Thank you for being awesome at everything above.

They have a new kiosk system, then they call your number and you come pick it up from a counter. They ignore you for the most part and don't interact with the customers at all. They don't seem to care like they did before. I found a piece of plastic in my basket under my fries. I almost ate it if I hadn't looked down I would have, they acted like they never saw a piece of plastic before, and walked away and said nothing more. Had to ask for a replacement fry wasn't offered. Personally I don't care for the new way they have steak and shake setup in Edwardsville. Seems they went on the cheaper side of things now. Masks aren't required by customers, but employees still wear them. The Kiosk is very confusing if you haven't used it before, ask for help before you get a massive order. Eat well!

My daughter was in from Colorado and she loves this steak and shake so me and my wife went to get at airport and she was ready for steak and shake so we headed there the food was delicious the restaurant was clean and the workers were terrific just as always when we go there

There is this thing about advertising, and maybe even negative news driving you to check something out for yourself. That was the case today with our lunch stop. We had come into town to drop off our bicycles for tune-ups. We had no particular plan for lunch, no particular cuisine in mind. We have heard all the chatter regarding the beef tallow switch the company had made in support of HHS Kennedy's MAHA movement. So we saw the sign, decided on a whim to take the plunge. My wife got a Frisco and fries, I got a Butter Garlic with fries. The food was average fast food. Nothing particularly remarkable and nothing bad. The shoestring fries were actually pretty decent. I don't think I would ever make a special trip to eat here. The kitchen needs a good cleaning, from where we were sitting, I could see that while they likely clean the cooking surfaces and other vital areas, they have let things like the area below the grill, and the exhaust vents to go untouched. The last time we had ever been ( years ago in Fairview Heights) to this franchise they had servers come to the table. It was a bit of a unique approach to fast food, sort of the gray line between a true sit down level and McDonald's. Now they have a kiosk that you have to navigate (we are in our early sixties, but tech savvy). Another older couple gave up and walked away while we were there. The weirdest thing about the new approach is the workers don't know what to do or say (so they say nothing). Your name is called out over the intercom and go get it yourself. You can see them working, they work hard to avoid eye contact, and certainly don't say anything to customers. I know that predictions of this chains demise circulate from time to time. I'm not wishing any ill outcome on anyone, but I'm not sure in this tough, wierd economy if what they are now giving is worth the price point.

I'm so confused I feel like I was scammed by a third party service... why is it three different prices and what is shake shack? I ordered through Steak 'n Shake

Unbelievably bad customer service. Waited an hour for an online order that said 6-11 minutes. Probably 10 other orders in front of me that waited just as long. They had two worthless cooks back there doing nothing. Asked the manager for a refund and he could only ignore me. Saw my order made sitting on the counter for over half hour waiting on chili. Left with no food. The fact that this place is still open is unbelievable.

Took about 5 minutes for someone to come onto the intercom, watched the person behind me leave they took so long. Took probably 10 minutes at the window for my food and the person at the window was beyond rude. Part of customer service is the service and they were clearly not good with that part. Food was fine but still annoyed at how rude the girl was at the window....

Ordered burger and paid extra for chili instead of fries. Chili was watered down. I had 3 beans in the entire cup. Asked manager for a new cup, she said she could give me a new cup but it'd be the same. I told her to just give me the fries it came with. She gavecme $1.50 intead of $1.99 plus tax. She was very rude. Not going back!!

The Edwardsville Steak'n Shake has reopened their dinning area, although they have discontinued their table service. You know place your order using a kiosk. Everything is now self service. I ordered the double steak burger with fries combo. The order was ready fairly quickly and it was as expected. They still have their small outside dinning area. My wife and I will sometimes take our dogs with us and utilize this area.

Just visited this restaurant today ordered two sandwiches a double and a triple both with OPR for those of you who are young minded that is onions pickles and relish the restaurant is using totally different pickles Classen's which is a white pickle totally taste different than a hamburger slice pickle and also I believe they're not even using sirloin or T-bone or ground round Call the restaurant And spoke to the manager possibly the franchisee says he has not changed his pickles nor his meat but I've been a connoisseur steak 'n Shake for 40+ years and that burger taste like somebody handmade it and put it on a stale bond with obviously different pickles but he denies that if you want to steak burger from steak 'n Shake don't go there beware

Went through drive through and got wrong food after 30 minutes and fries were uncooked. Nothing on order was correct. I went in to get a refund. Several other people at the time were also in like to get a refund. Waited 10 minutes and gave up. Right as I was about to leave I asked for a refund and they said it would take awhile. I decided my time wasn't worth $15 and was done wasting my time. An old guy threatened to call the police since he never got his food and couldn't even get a refund. I had enough. I decided to go to Freddy's across the street. I don't usually leave one stars, even when the food is wrong, but EVERYONE's orders were wrong on top of taking forever, to finish it off, couldn't even a refund.

DO NOT GO TO THIS STEAK N BAKE! It's really bad. There was a bean in my friends shake. The FoOd was cold as hell. I had to ask for a rag to clean my own damn table. The food made my pussy lips shrivel up like a worm on the side walk it was so salty. I think I now have high cholesterol. I saw a roach in the mens bathroom while taking a vape break... the toilet was disgusting, the shitters are broke and there are piss stains all over the seat. Very dissatisfied (edit) my friends threw up in the parking lot....

Tonight was the worst experience we've had with Steak 'n Shake. It's been hit or miss lately, sometimes good and then sometimes mediocre. We went through the drive thru and ordered two of the 4 for $4 deals. One double and one triple. When we get to the window, as I paid I asked for ketchup. I got a dirty look. When he hands me my card back, I get three packets. Three. For two orders of fries. When he comes back with our food, I remind him we both have fries so could we have more. He acts like I'm kicking him and it's costing him money. We get home and the food was terrible. The lettuce wasn't on the burgers and they were both smashed. I guess someone was angry at those burgers. The double, those patties were pieces and not even whole patties. We're done with SnS and we'll wait for Freddy's. From other threads I've seen, a lot of people in town feel the same way.

My fiancé and I were sat down in a relatively empty restaurant and our waitress handed us menus. She disappeared and we were never attended to. Not so much as a glad of water. Instead, all the wait staff were chatting in the corner. We will never be returning to this location ever again.

I am here currently. There are a total of 12 people in this establishment. TOTAL. I walked in at 5 until 1am. It is currently 1:30 am and I JUST received a water. Meanwhile the other THREE tables (yes that is it) have also JUST received their drinks. No food orders taken yet. Food has been sitting a good 10 min in the window ready to be delivered. One table has already gotten up and left. I understand being busy and delayed service but there is no reason four tables should be THIS DIFFICULT for one waitress. Meanwhile two couples have been waiting at the door to be seated for at least 5 minutes. So confused. Please help me realize why my service is SO TERRIBLE. thanks in advance.

I ordered the jalapeño crunch steak burger which was a big mistake, the burger was overpriced and we ended up paying an extra 2 dollars than what it said on the app because the "system works differently". The burger was very small for what it showed on the website as well and just looked like a mcdonalds mcdouble. My burger also had a hair in it. The burger and fries were both cold as well, we didn't even get our change back, which was only a dime so we let that one go. Overall the meal was undesirable and i would not recommend

Seems like they are wanting to close down soon. They don't even stay open until 6pm although workers are there they just tell you they won't serve you although hours on google say until midnight. No one answers phone so can't complain to manager. It operates like a vending machine where you order on a screen and walk up and get your own order. Less personality than a school cafeteria. Done going to this steak and shake!

I rarely eat fast food, but when I do, this is my "go to" place. Unfortunately, this place is wildly inconsistent. But, I've had way more good meals and service then bad. Steak 'n Shake has a lot of sentimental value for me. I've been eating here forever and my mom loved Steak 'n Shake. I have a secret for really good fries. I ask for extra crispy and when they actually do it, they are awesome! Hamburgers are very thin and almost crispy and when the buns are super fresh, they are quite yummy! The shakes are good, even great if you get it right away. They aren't so great if they have set a long time before you get it. The price can't be beat! Hubby had chili, double with fries and I had salad with single and fries. We both had a coke and with coupon it was around $10 bucks! So even though you never know if it's going to be good or not so good, I love Steak 'n Shake! One of my guilty pleasures is going there at midnight for a hamburger and shake when you can't sleep, because they are open 24 hours. Gotta love that!

I did not have an excellent experience here when I dined in with my family. One of the servers looked at me weird when I asked her if the fries that I was served were actually Cajun fries. I only asked because my fries did not look like the fries in the picture on the menu. They were literally regular fries with tons of Cajun seasoned sprinkled on top. They honestly tasted like chips. At the checkout counter the server there seemed annoyed as well. None of my family's dishes looked similar to what was on the menu. I know the restaurant is not high end but the food could have been prepared a bit better. One of our servers (our main server) was actually helpful and kind hearted but the other two employees seemed like they were having a bad day. I most likely won't be back.

I was disappointed with our experience. The restaurant was dirty! Our silverware was sticky. The windows had fingerprints all over them. The floor was also very dirty. It took 30 minutes to get our milkshakes and food. They weren't busy! When we got our food, it was wrong. We won't be back. Our family use to LOVE eating here but it has consistently been disappointing the last year. No wonder the are closing so many stores.

The food here has gone down hill. I used to eat here often & the last couple times the food has been awful. Had a banana shake with rotten bananas. California Skillet had 2 small brown pieces of avocado. Biscuit is hard as a rock. Food cold & greasy.

If I could give less than 1 star I would. It was the worse service I've ever had at a Steak n Shake. The place is filthy. Condiment bottles dirty, tables not wiped, bathrooms disgusting.

The place was sticky and my food was absolutely terrible and the lady in there was really bitchy and took her anger out on me and my girlfriend. Terrible place!!! Never go here!!!

They don't fail to disappoint. The last two times we've ordered either pickup or delivery several items were missing. When I called to point out that items were missing the manager blamed the staff, but would not make up for the missing items we paid for. Shame on me for going back there. I would actually prefer to drive the extra miles to the Wood River location. If you don't mind paying for things you'll never receive, getting cold food, and overall bad customer service this is the place for you.

I have quit going to Steak n Shakes. I tried one last time to go to Edwardsville,. It was awful. Server seated us and tossed the menus on the table, gave us one kids menu for 2 kids. She didn't take our drink orders and wasn't very friendly taking our orders. We had hair in fries, macaroni and cheese was all dried out, cole slaw was spoiled, and tea was old. Said they couldn't refund due to policy. Oh and the guy cooking the burgers had on a hoodie that rubbed the cheese every time he reached over it. Will not go back to any. No wonder they are all going out of business.

The food was great - the service is awful. We waited 10 min at 11am Friday to be seated with at least 6 open tables. Staff saw us and couldn't find time to seat us. Went to pay and the cook saw me for nearly 5 min before she came over for me to pay. There seemed to be a manager missing to manage the team and guest.

I love the interior has a vintage look. Shakes are always good to get. I always get a burger, usually the guacamole burger or the single bacon burger. I don't prefer the small shaped fries but they are okay. I wouldn't recommend the side cheese.

Most every chain tries breakfast, but many fail. I'll put Steak 'n Shake in the latter category in my book. Way too long of a wait for a drive through with no other cars, and a very simple order: Coffee and a sausage biscuit. Had a coupon but they couldn't seem to figure out how to use it so I think I paid full price. Coffee was weak. Biscuit was average. When you send out coupons to invite people to try something new (such as their revamped breakfast), shouldn't you try to do your best for repeat business?

Walked in door at 12:30p on a Friday - there were so many people waiting for a table that we barely were able to get in the door. We saw the sign that said "Please wait to be seated". After waiting about 10 mins., an older couple squeezed through the door, and the lady went over and put her name on a clipboard. I walked over and looked and it was a sign in sheet like a hostess would use, so I placed our name on it. We waited for about 15 mins. before we saw any employee approach all of us waiting. When she did, she started to seat a party that had come in after us. That woman (what an honest customer) stated that us and the older couple were in front of them. The employee looked totally confused, so we explained the whole sign vs. clipboard dilemma. Hopefully management will read this and pick one or the other - don't put the sign up or change it say "sign clipboard". We then got seated, waited on promptly (although the confused employee seated us and just kind of threw menus/placemats on the table) and got our food in a reasonable amount of time. Our server, though, was also waiting on a table of 13, so she was stretched thin. We both had ordered cheese fries, and there was barely 2 T. of cheese on either order. Our server did come by on her way to the party of 13 once to check on us. We finally had to ask for our check at the register. This is our 2nd visit to this location, and we won't be back as the first visit was just as bad. Would have given this review just one star but the food was the usual Steak 'n Shake good.

Been here an hour and still haven't gotten my order would not recommend this place at all

Our terrible experience started off by my friend slipping on the very wet floors with their nasty mop water. No one even asked if she was okay. Then to top that, waiting for a cashier took forever. And to make make matters worse, the woman taking our order was not kind and made me second guess my choice ever coming there in the first place. Went inside and ordered to go since the drive thru was busy well that turned into me sitting there for a hour literally watched my shakes melt while I was waiting on my food and the people working acted like it was the end of the world when I told them my shakes was melted definitely will not be going back here this is the second bad experience here

I started coming here back when it opened back in 1958 when I was still in high school. It was there that I met my husband of 50 years! We have been to this Steak 'n Shake every year for our anniversary for 47 years in a row with my sweetie Horace! The wait staff are always so accommodating toward our special anniversary requests ;) I love this place!!!

Worst food in Edwardsville!!!!! Steak 'n Shake used to be really good. Last few times we have been there the wait time in drive was ridiculous, the food was cold and half of our order was not in the bag after paying almost 30.00 dollars for food that seemed like it sat and they just reheated it. Chili is ALWAYS cold or old af tasting. No wonder why all these other locations are closing. If u want food like Steak 'n Shake just go to Freddys where the food is fresh and the employees aren't all bitchs who act like they hate life. I put money on this location being the next to close down.

It was very good food . Potato skin. Yum. Relly restaurant. Was worse .they were. Deep fryed .they were fresh. Out of a local farm big bit of cheese. So many chives. Plus clean mop haging on the wall going ln to the kitchen. Were you're Food come out .l asked the manager. Is that how you're kitchen is cleaned with good clean. Mop and towels haging around .then I look up he put another mop on wall. I will never go anywhere other than that lovely place again. ...beautiful

Pathetic. Took 30 minutes + to get a lukewarm steak burger. Spend your money elsewhere. And a server and manager with an attitude to boot! Never again.

I won't come back. Our service was horrible. We had the server, MIA. She sat us down, with two adult menus, and then kids hats with the car you can put together, but no kids menus. I went ahead and got our own menus. Then we she asked for our drinks, we gave her the order and she turned and left. A few minutes passed, she comes back, without our drinks and asked what we would like to order. We asked for our drinks again and she said, "Oh yeah. Hold on" She comes back, we order, and the food came back in a good amount of time. The kitchen had great communication. The atmosphere in the dining room, between the manager, the staff and the other servers was something like someone just walked out or something was wrong. Mia's attitude was like she didn't want to be there or that we were a problem. I don't normally write negative reviews, but she has no business needing to work there. Sam, another server we saw working there was great on the other hand.

Well tried the new app order. Was nice and worked easily for placing my order and didn't have to repeat myself to see they got it right. However the location in Edwardsville Illinois is much to be desired. I placed a simple order for two shooter meals. First the app said pick up time was for 11:05 am. When I arrived at 11:10 I was told it would be another 10 to 15 min. At that time they started cooking our order. When I got home with my order. The entire order was wrong. Cheese on burgers that were ordered with. I cheese. Missing fries, no sauce on the shooters. These people want $15 an hour pay but they can't get a simple order correct that was even printed out in detail for them. Shame on them. Maybe they should be cleaning bathrooms instead of preparing meals. But they may be to difficult for them also.

Stood at entrance with 3 other parties of 2 - 4 people for 15 minutes without anyone acknowledging our presence. There were PLENTY of open tables. However, if being ignored is your fetish, this is absolutely the place to go. Also, here's my obligatory "I wish I could give 0 stars" comment. Made an account just to tell people this particular Steak n Shake is a joke. I usually let things go, but this place is just awful.

Zero stars if I could give that. We waited 15 minutes to have a server come to the table. Then she was rude and didn't bring our waters until after we already had our milkshake. Two other tables that got there after us got their food before us and finished the meals. Waited for an hour still no food. Waitress said "making it now" but we didn't even want it anymore. She ignored us, and then the manager wouldn't even speak to us so we walked out. I won't be back

LOVE this steak b shake .... used to come herer when i lived nearby but then i moved to florissant . But i still come back everytime, I am looking for some good burgers n shakes!! Really good grilledcheese too!! Service is Fast and i love the Pep and Excitemt of the wait Staff ..... Especially

While the food is OK, the servers are the very best at customer service! I have had 3 different servers in the last 6 months and each and everyone provided better service than I ever received at an upscale restaurant and they were super busy at the time. Congratulations for getting customer service right!!!! Even though I am not a burger type person, I will go back - my kids love it and the service is worth it.

We went to Steak n Shake for a Mothers Day breakfast. We arrived at 9:10 am and we were seated in a booth. There were a few families there and not busy at all. There were four of us and we ordered right away to expedite our order. After 40 min wait for our food we decided to leave.

First of all, if I have to wipe off my cup because there is more cherry syrup on the outside than on the inside, that is a problem. Second of all, when I get home I find that my order is wrong, that is also a problem. At this point I'm thinking three strikes and you're out. But then I took a bite of the Royale burger.........Oh glorious joy! That burger saved them from getting one star. This Steak n' Shake needs some help in the customer service arena. The food is good. Well, the food that they get correct.

Good food. Cheap food. Decent service. Cold inside so take a jacket. Great place to grab a quick bite but still sit and be served. Can be a bit slow at times, but restaurant is clean and food is always hot.

I've been sitting at the order station in drive thru for 7 minutes. I initially pulled up and the server said "I'll be with you in one moment" and 7 min later and I've still heard no response! This is outrageous

One of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. A friend and I went here after work and it was about 11 pm. We really wanted milkshakes and I was kind of hungry, but wasn't sure if I wanted to get food. We sat down and waited a couple minutes before our server came over to greet us. We only ordered water and our milkshakes because we were possibly waiting on a 3rd person to join us, so we did not want to order food yet. There was us and one other table there and I kid you not ... it was 1130 before we received our milkshakes. Now, I am a server so I know how it can get, but there was only ONE other table who was done eating, they were just talking, and all we ordered were TWO milkshakes. Okay okay, maybe the drive thru was busy you say? No no no. We watched our waitress the whole time, she was putting on chap stick ... talking to her coworkers ... twirling her hair. Basically doing everything but make our milkshakes. Now if there was some malfunction with the ice cream or shake machine or whatever they use I would understand. But our waitress didn't come back to us in that entire 30 minutes and didn't say anything. By the time we got our shakes I had lost my appetite. So I didn't end up ordering food and you bet I never went back to this steak n shake and never will again.

Friendly fresh drive thru. Inside is always packed. Gets good business for a chain in my opinion. Great shakes and pretty quick in drive thru for made to order food served with a smile. $4 meals rock

I continue to amaze myself by frequenting this establishment. Today's visit did nothing to change my opinion. I arrived around 2:30 PM and there were perhaps 7 tables with customers. I was promptly seated and was waited on after a "brief" 5 minute wait. The waitress was very nice and even asked me if I would like my milkshake delivered with the chili to which I said yes. Chili arrived promptly and waitress said milkshake would be right out because they had a real big order of them. I looked around and most of the patrons were drinking soda so I couldn't figure out where the order may have come from. Moments later my meal arrived without the cheese I'd requested on the burger and still no milkshake. I didn't send the burger back because I didn't want to have it come back with a cold piece of cheese slapped on it. Halfway through cheese-less cheeseburger waitress came by to say milkshake was on its way. As I took the last bite of my meal the shake appears! At least it showed up. As I was checking out I got the usual "how was everything" question. Thinking some constructive criticism might help, I told the "man in charge" that "except for the milkshake arriving after I finished my meal of a cheeseless cheeseburger it was ok". I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by his total lack of comment to my response. I have very low expectations of this place and they never disappoint.

best chocolate shake i ever had. i only got a chocolate shake and i waited like 10 minutes with one other car in the drive through line. get it to together steak 'n shake.
