I was so excited to be in Las Vegas on October 10th for the opening of Zippy's! I was so looking forward to celebrating with a big Zippy's feast.
But some days before the opening I got an email from Zippy's warning that they expected a deluge of customers on opening day. They expected people lining up as early as 6 am and warned that parking would probably be next to impossible.
Not wanting to deal with any of that, I decided to wait until the following day. I figured I'd have no problem getting in on Day 2.
Wrong! Zippy's was still a total mob scene, there were about a million people milling about and the parking lot was jam packed with cars. I was like, nah dawg, I don't want to deal with this mess.
So I headed over to my old time used-to-be, Steak 'n Shake. We go way back.
I love Steak 'n Shake. I've had many great meals here at the South Point location. I love their big comfortable booths and I love their Milkshakes. Their burgers are pretty good too. I'm not a big fan of their shoestring fries, but they're OK, I guess.
It was lunch time and I was worried on the drive over that I'd have to stand in a long ass line. To my surprise there was no line at all. I guess everyone was at Zippy's. I was able to immediately score a booth.
The waitress came over and I ordered a double steakburger. For some reason I forgot to order a shake, I didn't realize it until just after she walked to the back to put in my order. Instantly I knew how badly I screwed up. It usually takes a while to get your shake and I knew that because of my little mistake my burger was going to be served and I was going to have no shake to go with it. I desperately looked toward the back, waiting for my waitress to emerge, hoping I could place my shake order.
I swear it was only like two minutes later my waitress came out from the back. Incredibly, she was bringing me my steakburger and fries. I was like, wow, how in the hell did they make my food so fast? She sat the food in front of me and took my shake order. I always get a Straw-nilla.
That's one of my favorite things about Steak 'n Shake: the side by side milkshakes, two flavors in one glass. These specialty shakes cost a little more than the regular shakes, but they're so much fun, it's totally worth it.
The restaurant gods smiled on me this day because it didn't take long at all for my shake to arrive. And it was absolutely perfect. It wasn't perfectly 50/50, but that was fine with me because I like it a little more vanilla than strawberry, and that's how it came out. I was totally stoked!
My burger was just OK. Kind of disappointing, really. Hence the three star designation. The patties were overcooked and a little dry. I was like, what the hell? That almost never happens here. Must've been an off day for the kitchen. The shoestring fries were disappointing too, definitely undercooked. Nobody likes undercooked fries, especially undercooked shoestring fries.
By the time I finished my meal the restaurant was a little busier, but there were still plenty of tables available. I guess this place isn't as popular as it once was.
But never mind, I'm still down with Steak'n Shake. This visit was kinda disappointing, but I'm sure they'll probably be a lot better next visit.
Mikey C says: did I mention that shakes were 50% off during Happy Hour? I didn't? Damn, I should've included that.
