The Best Coffee Shops in Denver | Eater Denver

"The line sometimes extends out the door at this Platt Park coffee shop, located just a couple of blocks from the Old South Pearl Street shopping and dining district — but it’s worth the wait. In addition to locally roasted coffee and a solid selection of baked goods, there’s fresh-pressed juice and oatmeal to boot, all served in a funky space decorated with rotating artworks and garage doors that open onto a large, flower-bedecked patio. (A second location in LoHi is equally atmospheric, occupying an old firehouse.)" - Ruth Tobias

Google
Great coffee! I got an oat mild cappuccino and flavor was excellent! Great vibes with indoor and outdoor seating options. I was visiting from out of town for a few days and came here every day of my trip for my morning coffee.

Google
One of the BEST Latte’s I have ever had! Absolutely loved this place. They must be using a high quality espresso bean. The ordering process was easy and the place had a good vibe. Also, ordered a scone and a pumpkin muffin which were both delicious. My group sat at the coffee car and enjoyed watching the staff make juice. Next, visit I will be sure to give it a try!

J. Chumney

Google
Very limited latte syrup flavors which is why I’m giving 3 stars overall. But the atmosphere was great and I could definitely see myself hanging out there if I lived nearby. Even had nice shaded outdoor seating. I also loved that they had a water tap inside to refill my water bottle.

Alejandra Diaz

Google
This was our favorite coffee place in Denver! The cappuccino and the espresso were delicious and we have a picky palate (we are Nicaraguan and our coffee is amazing 😋) but this coffee really hit the spot! The pastries were delicious! And the staff was so nice, we really loved the vibe, made me happy to see everyone happy.

Nick Katsiotis

Google
Beautiful location :) outdoor pick up window is perfect because the outdoor seating is amazing! So much of seating and it’s shaded. The employees were very happy to be there and really friendly! Sweet bloom and boxcar coffee is brewed there. The muffin I had hit the spot. Good energy at this coffee shop

Google
A very friendly place! Great coffee, too. Many choices for seating indoors and 2 outdoor patios. Lots of foliage and an airplane fuselage (go figure).

Google
BEST COFFEE IN DENVER vibes = 10/10 Coffee = 10/10 Staff = 100/10 ! Wi-Fi= 10/10 Pastries= 10/10 The only thing that I don’t like about this location is the LACK of outlets. There’s 1 outlet spot in the whole cafe, and it’s always taken. I’m happy to buy 2 or 3 cups of coffee if it’s means I can stay and work on my laptop. Other than that, they have amazing coffee and I can’t get enough of it. I’m here at least 2-3 times a week, and I don’t plan on changing it.

Google
In our short stay in Denver, this coffee shop was the best out of all the coffee shops we visited. The coffee was absolutely delicious. Their blueberry lemon and mushroom cheese croissants were to die for. The ambience was peaceful and stunning. They have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
This is my new obsession! This patio is truly something to write home about. So much space & seating available. There is shade from big, lush trees. It is the perfect setting for your end of summer time outside I got an iced latte and my husband got a steamed lavender latte. Both were fantastic!

Yelp
My colleagues and I met here for a cup of coffee and snack on a weekday morning. It gets packed very quickly - there were no seats inside by 9AM so we opted for outdoor seating. The patio is exquisite - it's peaceful and has lovely landscaping. The drinks were pretty good, and I LOVED the gluten free food options available! Great vibe; I definitely plan on being back.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
I love this coffee spot!! It has easy parking to find when coming here to work and hang with friends. The outdoor patio is amazing and big and open. The coffee is delicious and has multiple options for food and drinks. I love that they have gluten free food options too! My sisters were visiting and loved this spot too. We had so much fun hanging in the patio. It was super busy but the service was quick and easy. Highly recommend checking out this coffee shop in Platt Park!

Yelp
This place is very cute and hipster settled in a lovely neighborhood space. It's very modern inside. The staff was friendly. I got a dirty chai latte with oatmilk. The milk alternative is expensive. The drink was actually great. I asked for sweet, but it was more plain, but still no big deal, it was a great way to start my day.

Yelp
Really good drip coffee, great environment, beautiful indoor and out. Staff is friendly and quick

Yelp
You know that feeling when you've finally found your go-to coffee shop? It's a warm, fuzzy sensation that tells you, "I'll be coming here a lot." A friend told me to check out this neighborhood spot when I first moved to Denver, and I've already been most weekends since. The pastries are INSANE (anyone know where they get them from?!) and the spicy chai latte is my favorite. There's an awesome patio outside with ample seating, not sure what that looks like in the winter but it's great for warmer months.
google avatar

Olivia G.

Yelp
Love this coffee spot! In the warmer months they have tons of outdoor seating in their patio. Fast service and delicious!
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
Steam is such a cute little coffee shop. The line gets pretty long but that speaks to how tasty the drinks are. They offer a variety of pastries as well. The patio is the perfect spot to enjoy some sunshine and sip a fresh brew.
google avatar

Aleah H.

Yelp
Stopped here when our road trip brought us to the neighborhood for an evening, and it was spectacular! They have an external ordering window for those with dogs and bulky strollers, which is amazing! My spicy chai was also spectacular and not sweet at all! We also enjoyed the quirky patio and great baristas!!

Yelp
Excellent coffee shop tucked away in a cute little neighborhood. Coffee was fantastic, service was wonderful, and everything was just fantastic. Next time we're in Denver, we'll be back!

Britt O.

Yelp
This place is a total vibe! I would recommend anyone checking this place out, especially if you work from home. It's a great work space! Service was quick even with a huge line. The pastries were incredible! I'll be back!
google avatar

Magda C.

Yelp
Great tasting coffee and pastry! And nice vibe. It wasn't too crowded on Saturday around 10am but pasties sell out fast.

Yelp
I enjoyed getting coffee at Steam. It's a very inviting, clean cafe. I sat indoors but the patio seemed wonderful as well especially on a nice day. It's a great place to have a conversation. Large coffee was $3.25 which I find to be a reasonable price for good tasting coffee at an establishment like this one. It's tucked in to a very walkable neighborhood so enjoyed walking my dog around there after my coffee meet-up. Steam it up and steam it out. I would return again.
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood coffee hangout. Parking was really easy, so that's a big plus. It's a popular place. When I walked in there was a long line of people waiting to order but there were still some well-spaced tables available. You can also sit outside on their patio if you want. They seem to specialize in espresso-based coffee drinks but they have tea, too. I would definitely go back. It's a perfect non-chain kinda' place to meet someone for a coffee chat.
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
I totally dig this place. The staff is always nice. The muffins are delicious, and it's simply a cool vibe place to read/laptop/hang out either indoors or on their patio. The Platt Park neighborhood helps in that one can get their haircut at Blake Barber, walk down two blocks to Steam, and by 11 am grab a fantastic ice cream taste-o-joy at The Sweet Cow. Steam allows my weekends to start with wonderful latte joy, setting the stage for my Best Days Ever.

Yelp
Cute spot! The plane is always fun to check out. I love meeting on the patio when the weather is warm! Inside is clean & inviting, feels like I walked back to the pacific north west. I'm a huge fan of the chai but I hear the pour over is where it's at.
google avatar

Sebastian E.

Yelp
This place is so so cute. I was looking for a cafe with a lovely outdoor patio with actual shade and this place delivers. Trees and umbrellas are abundant. The coffee is delicious, and the pastry options are bountiful. The service was so friendly too.

Peter Y.

Yelp
Awesome espresso bar/coffee shop on south Pearl with great treats in the morning time! Everyone is so nice and the place is full of good energy! They have seating inside and outside. Come early to get a place to sit!

Yelp
I think I have a problem -- every coffee shop I try in Denver becomes my new "favorite" coffee shop, and Steam Espresso Bar is no exception! I love the casual and relaxed vibes here. I stopped by on a Saturday to do some work and sat at the bar, but there were plenty of indoor tables and spots on the [huge] patio available. I really liked that the patio had both sunny and shady spots to choose from. I got my go-to, a decaf iced americano, and added a lemon poppyseed scone. I'm not much of a scone gal and it was a bit of an impulse addition to my order, but glad I did! Both the americano and the scone were great, and under $8 for the two (including tip!) seemed very reasonable to me. A large number of customers were ordering the green juice, and I could see why -- seated right by the bar, I was able to watch it being made, and it both looked and smelled incredible, made only with fresh fruits and veggies. I will be back and can't wait to check out some other menu items and to hang out on the patio!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in the highlands. It's bumpin on the weekends! They have a great patio with probably 10 or so tables and ample spacious seating in doors. Menu is simple! They had some delicious looking pastries that we didn't get to trying this time. A few flavored croissants (strawberry?!). Got the cold brew and the green juice. The coffee here was the fruity, citrus undertones. I'm not a fan of coffee like this, so not sure I'd come back for coffee. Maybe to try the pastries and get some green juice. Green juice was cheaper than most in the city at $6.50. It was delicious - not super sweet, loaded with ginger and a bit spicy with the cayenne. Just wished it was a little colder but it is pressed fresh - YUM! If you're looking for a coffee shop to spend a lovely Saturday morning at, Steam's got you covered!
google avatar

Yelp
A charming place to get a coffee or a pastry. Fast friendly service with amazing attention to details and awesome customer service. Ample seating inside and out. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the most important things in life is knowing where to go to get good coffee. Steam Espresso Bar is that place. Simple menu, quick and friendly service, really clean, minimalist decoration and layout, and most importantly good coffee. They have a small selection of pastries which I have not tried, but which look amazing. But for me, it's the coffee. Rich and fresh and robust, poured by baristas who obviously know what they are doing. If you're in their area and looking for a charge of caffeine, don't hesitate to stop in. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I've been to Steam about twice in the last month and want to update my review based on COVID practices! To start, you can't walk inside and instead, need to head around back to their large patio and order at the walkup counter. It's been busy the weekday mornings I've swung by, so next time I'll probably take advantage of ordering ahead via their website (steamtogo.square.site) to minimize waiting time. Either way, there's plenty of room for social distancing. If it's not too cold and you want to hang around, they have tables with seating in the back. Their pastry selection is still on point! I recently tried a Colorado Queen which is kind of like a cronut and it was so good! There's nothing I like more than a killer coffee shop with solid food choices and Steam has got 'em both. Easy parking, friendly folks, and convenient location. I'm sold!
google avatar

Yelp
WOW! Steam is an exceptional coffee bar. I stopped by here with my husband and was delighted to discover that they make flat whites! (Not the Starbucks version, this is the real deal.) They offer oat and almond milk dairy-free alternatives and gluten-free treats. (Unfortunately, they were out of them that day. I'm hoping they'll restock next time I swing by.) My flat white was excellent - nutty, roasty, and not burned or bitter at all. My husband enjoyed a creamy oatmilk hot chocolate. They also have gourmet chocolate spread, honey, and preserves to take home. It's a comfortable spot to linger for a while, with cozy indoor seating and rustic decor. I'll definitely be back, but wish I lived closer.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Love the venue and the coffee, but the pastries keep me coming back. Sometimes the service can be a bit slow, but it's not awful.

Yelp
This is a wonderful coffee shop in the Platt Park neighborhood. The baristas are friendly and always upbeat. Steam Espresso Bar sources its coffee from Box Car (Boulder) and Sweet Bloom (Lakewood). Steam delivers a high quality coffee which balances acidity, sweetness, and bitterness in one sip. The flavors are smooth and has no offensive notes like you can get for that mass produced chain with a green mermaid. Steam's lattes provide the right amount of milk (I prefer cow) to enhance the fruity floral flavors of the bean. Recently I have fallen in love with their mixed (spicy and sweet) chai in oat milk. It is now my go to drink. You get the right amount of warm spices mixed with a hint of sweetness. The oat milk mimics cow's milk, but provides an extra sweetness and minor oat-y aftertaste. As of 2020 they are following strict COVID protocols to keep staff and customer safe. Just recently they opened the inside to allow 6 customers inside at a time.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite denver spots. When I lived on this side of town, I'd frequently bike here & work outside on the patio area. They've extended it quite a lot over the years with more seating and nice shade. It's a great neighborhood spot with wonderful staff and a peaceful/quiet vibe to get work done or just enjoy all they have to offer on the menu here. Happy every time I get to spend part of my morning/day here.
google avatar

Gabby S.

Yelp
I stopped by Steam on a Sunday morning after browsing the S Pearl St farmers market. It's a cute spot with a nice outdoor area to enjoy your coffee. They are taking Covid precautions by assuring everyone is wearing a mask, not accepting cash, and closing the indoor seating options. I got a cold brew with oat milk and a strawberry croissant. The croissant was very pretty and equally as tasty. Flaky and filled with strawberry jam! The perfect pastry to pair with my cold brew. A friend of mine got the green juice (which is fresh and made to order) and she said it was also delicious.

Yelp
This is a nice little coffee shop. I love the outside seating area and the customer service was great. The simplicity of the menu was nice too. It keeps coffee simple, which is exactly how I like it! I ordered an iced latte with a little bit of honey and it was the perfect way to start my morning.

JC F.

Yelp
Delicious and fast service. I really enjoyed this spot. The vibe was great, and everybody was being friendly. Great experience

Joshua V.

Yelp
I go here every day and the service is awesome, the drinks are great, the indoor/outdoor setup is amazing. The only issue I have is that they don't have any outlets. Despite no outlets, plenty of people still work from here, the wifi is strong, and alternatively they have a "no laptop" bar which is cool for those looking to unplug.

Patrick B.

Yelp
Very cute, aesthetic and clean coffee shop with a peaceful outdoor seating area. It's a nice place to walk to in the morning. The location is the main reason I come here. The service is just sometimes unfriendly and quite slow (espresso can take 10-15 minutes). They also don't offer any flavors to add to your latte, just simple syrup. I think the simple syrup actually worsens the latte versus flavors like caramel or lavender. Their coffee also isn't *so* good, to be that one shop that doesn't have flavors.
google avatar

Sofia D.

Yelp
Best hot chocolate! They use Zhu (or something like that) coco which is super rich and delicious. If you're wanting to go work - be aware that the outlets are all plated over so you can't charge.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I can't believe how long it has been since my last review here. I noticed some nice improvements since I last visited and much like my previous review, it's really hard to argue against the fact it's one of my favorite coffee shops in Denver.
google avatar

Grecia P.

Yelp
The outdoor patio alone deserves 5 stars! COFFEE + Typical coffee shop options at this place. The coffee itself is delicious and a true specialty. - Not entirely sure why sweeteners aren't used here... a lot of places even create their own syrups to use. I can't drink coffee without it being sweet (...), but fortunately the baristas were kind enough to melt down sugar for my drink. They do offer honey as well. SERVICE + Very kind! Baristas are welcoming and helpful. + Despite the beautiful wood decor and shiny chandeliers, this place is welcoming and comfortable. There are plenty of tables to study or to just hang out and chat with someone. PATIO + If you're looking for a nice big patio with a "backyard" feel where you can hang out with your dog, this is the spot. In the middle of a hot day, the huge trees provided tons of shade and kept the patio area cool. + A lot of seating for a mix of people who are there to study and people who are there to hang out. I'll definitely be coming back here!

Yelp
Pros: 1. friendly staff and great options 2. If you like granola, earth flavors this will be your jam! 3. Sweet bloom coffee 4. Cute and fun vibe 5. Good pastry selection 6. Chill spot to hang if you have time Cons: 1. Mocha is tangy, earth flavors and is not great in my opinion 2. Chai is bland and flavorless 3. Small crowded and wait times were not great for a fast coffee stop 4. The set up is awkward and annoying while waiting! Over all there are more pros then cons and if you are looking for a spot to meet a friend or hang out for a bit it is a great spot! If you are looking for a really smooth bold mocha in a hurry I don't advise it!
google avatar

Jerry O.

Yelp
Steam is a pretty cool place to enjoy some coffee and they have cold brew on tap. My favorite part is the South facing patio. The vibe is cool, people friendly, with WiFi and plugs. The coffee is ethically obtained and the plastic cups are eco-friendly. I think they might also have another space in Boulder for my Boulder peeps, but don't quote me. Some good friends of mine said the owner is a cool guy and I agree. You don't get that cool, personal, small business vibe at Starbucks or Dunkin. I have not tried the pastries but they look delish, too! If you're in this part of town stop by and warm or cool your insides! Introduce your pup to the dog friendly patio! ;-)
google avatar

Sasha T.

Yelp
Steam is adorable and so conducive to working from for a long period of time. The baristas are all very friendly and accommodating. The coffee is Boxcar and brewed deliciously--you can opt for drip for $3 (16 oz) or an equally well-priced pour-over. They have almond, soy, and oat milks. The space is sparsely yet appropriately decorated with wood and metal. It's in a quiet area of Pearl. They play nice music, and the traffic is consistent but not overwhelming. Three cheers for eco-friendly cups!

Yelp
Super cute shop on Pearl! Coffee came out in under 5 minutes. Loved the patio seating where they put your drinks on the outside bar! My cortado was steamed perfectly and tasted heavenly. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
Pumpkin chocolate chip muffin was great, blueberry scone was a little too stale/hard? and the black coffee was fine. The coffee shop on this particular Thursday afternoon 1pm-2pm was extremely loud, I could hear everyone even through my headphones which deters me from wanting to work here again during an afternoon.
google avatar

Leigh M.

Yelp
I love their little walk up window! They have a great selection of coffee and teas. The pearl street location has a lovely outdoor patio and a place for the doggies and bike trailers for parking

Yelp
First time at this shop - and last. Kudos on them for good first impressions: ample, clean patio, plenty of seating, clean and quiet indoor area, and a simple, no frills menu with an appealing selection of pastries. This is a strict coffee shop, not a cafe so do not expect or look for hot food. Dear God, if they had hot food the wait would jump another 25 minutes. I ordered my latte at 11:21. Delivered at 11:35. This is a REGULAR latte, no fancy anything. There was no line when I arrived, and i counted 5 pp behind counter, so I'm not sure why there is a lengthy wait (as mentioned in other reviews). Lux cafe in central Phoenix is a hip, bustling joint equally staffed and never a wait as long for coffee. My job involves travel and the only time I have had to wait this long was at the Starbucks at FLL airport. The two (yes, 2) young ladies who took my order and handed me the muffin without saying a word must've not been feeling well enough to interact with the public. Felt like an SNL episode where the retail staff can't be bothered to help a customer ta-day or ta-morrow. Diversity here: non existent with staff, and hard to find in clientele. To whom I assume is the shift manager: STOP chewing on whatever you're chewing. You stand out at over 6'3" and it does not look appealing. How Steam stays in business is hard to imagine. I wish them the best.

Yelp
Overrated coffeehouse. I admit it has a lot going for it, a beautiful Pearl St. location and they use a good quality coffee brand. The cons I believe though outweigh the pros. There is always a line to get anything there, they have a bunch of overwhelmed arrogant baristas working there. I don't know if this is a trend, but I don't know why anybody would expect you to tip them 20% or more for them to make you a coffee beverage while you wait an unusual amount of time for it to be made? I can definitely see tipping and have donated quite a bit to coffeehouse tip jars. They also have it on their website that you can tip up to $100 to your barista. The best coffee I have ever had was in Italy where it is served to you right away in a very artful way and without any drama. And they do it there without any expectation of a tip or that they are doing you a favor to make you a coffee beverage.

Mehrnoosh J.

Yelp
Visited Steam for the first time today and loved it! The service was great, employees were very friendly and helpful. The coffee was wonderful which I enjoyed sitting in the back patio on a beautiful sunny day!

Yelp
Fantastic coffee and pastries before COVID, and still fantastic during it. I enjoy so many of the coffee drinks here, as well as both options for their chai. It's also difficult to avoid the pastries; the flavors like the earl grey or the pumpkin chai scones are amazing, and even the basics like ham and cheese croissants or sugar brioches are absolutely delightful. I especially love all the changes that they've made to accommodate for COVID. It's a walk up counter, making it super easy to drop by if you've got a dog. And there are signs indicating clean/dirty, as well as courtesy visuals like tipped chairs, so that all of us can stay safe. I also really appreciate that on almost all my visits, I spy a staff member wiping down tables and chairs. Tip well, y'all!

Yelp
Nice coffee shop. Expensive as you'd expect. Their spicy chai is tasty.
google avatar

Art A.

Yelp
My buddies and I stopped at the one near Pomona high school as a mid ride stop to get refreshments. It may not be there any longer. They have it all. Great service, wide selection of food and great coffee.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
If you're looking for a sugar based coffee, this is not your spot, but they do have great coffee selections as well as non coffee items like chai. Their breakfast pastries are to die for and there is typically good parking out front. Tons of outdoor seating in the little garden area and very comfortable to have a meeting at. Spicy Chai is pretty spicy, but the sweet chai has no bite. Get the spicy with a shot of espresso and you will be happy!
